I don't want you by my side (because I need you)

Summary:

“Whatever Shidou, I’m going to go take a bath.” and with that Reo finally escaped with the room assignments, party, and (of course) Nagi still on his mind. Reo would use this party to break away from Nagi and make sure people only knew him as “Reo” not as “Nagi’s partner” nor as a part of “Nagi & Reo” he was done with all of that. Unbeknownst to him, a pair of dark gray eyes followed Reo until he exited. A pair of eyes that belong to someone who “did not and never did care.”
.
.
.
.

Or after Nagi and Reo had their so-called "break up" the two of them see things from different sides. Reo wants to forget Nagi, forget what happened, and make sure everyone knows he ALONE is an amazing striker (and doesn't need Nagi) . However, all Nagi wants is to have Reo back again and show the world (especially Shidou) that Reo belongs to him. When a party is hosted at Blue Lock to celebrate before the U-20 match, both take this as a way to achieve their goal. However things don't go as planned for both of them.

Notes:

So this is my first fic ever! I wanted to write a Nagireo one so badly because their relationship means so much to me, so here it is! This might be a little bad, and the first chapter might be short, but I do plan on writing and finishing this fic! Also, keep in mind the POV will change and swap between Nagi and Reo (I'm not sure if it happens in this chapter I wrote the note before I finished it, but it will happen eventually), but I will try to emphasize when it does! Also, in this blue lock, Kunigami comes back because he got swapped out for one of the players leaving. (it's an excuse because wildcard hasn't happened yet at this point in time, but I want pre-wildcard kuni in this) Anyway, hope you enjoy it!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Operation Nagireo

Chapter Text

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

“Congratulations my diamonds in the rough,” Ego begins as the remaining Blue Lock strikers enter the pentagon-shaped room. “You all have managed to make it to the 3rd selection, however, before we begin, ” Reo held his breath. During his time at Blue Lock, he had had enough surprises thrown at him– including being abandoned by Nagi– and he wasn’t looking forward to anymore. His eyes found their way to the man in question. Nagi, with his soft, fluffy white hair. Nagi, with his slouched yet tall and muscular frame. Nagi, with his gray, uninterested eyes. Nagi, with his handsome features yet bored expression. Nagi, the man in which Reo had fallen in love with. Nagi, the man Reo thought he would spend the rest of his life with. Nagi— Reo’s thoughts were quickly cut off as Nagi slightly turned his head to the side to whisper something to Isagi. Reo didn’t want Nagi to know he still cared. Reo didn’t want Nagi to know how much he still yearned for him even after being having his heartbroken.

Reo attempted to refocus on Ego’s mindless rambling but his mind kept traveling back to Nagi. He needed to stop. He was over all that. Right? As Reo desperately attempted to focus and forget about Nagi, he didn’t realize someone sneaking behind him. A hand snaked to his waist and he shrieked in surprise. A couple of heads turn to face him and the culprit of this incident, one of them being Nagi. Probably looking for something more interesting than Ego’s stupid rambling he thought to himself. Reo shook his head rapidly in an attempt to get Nagi off his mind while mouthing a quick “sorry” to those turned towards him (Avoiding Nagi’s eyes of course). Then quickly turned to identify the culprit of this sneak attack (although he already had a pretty good idea of who it was). Shidou Ryuusei.

Reo sighed internally as he glared at Shidou and attempted to remove his hand. However, Shidou wouldn’t budge and continued to stare at him with a wolfish grin as he tightened his grip on Reo. Reo’s face involuntarily flushed a light pink. Ew he thought to himself, he would never go for that.

“What was that purple bun?” Shidou teased while keeping up that annoying grin of his. Oops, Reo thought, hadn’t realized he had said that out loud. “You must mean ew-autiful or ew-ot or ew-exy or…” Reo stopped listening to his rambling as he continued with his nonsense words, trying out his ew + combinations of words that Reo would never utter to him in his life. Geez, Reo thought, he sounded like Zantetsu trying out some new big word in his dictionary that he’d never use right.

“You listening, purple bun?” Shidou said while moving Reo’s face to face him with his free hand, forcing Reo’s attention back to him. Then his grin widened as he aimed his pointy hair in Nagi’s direction “Or are you thinking about your little ex again”

“Shut up cockroach” Reo yell-whispered as he shoved Shidou off of him and onto the floor, successfully this time. “And he’s not my ex! Were never dating!” But I wish did Reo thought to himself. Part of him wished that they truly did date. So he could justify why his mind kept trailing back to Nagi. Couples always thought about each other even after breakups— Right? But he knew the real reason he wished they were dating was so he could delude himself into thinking Nagi still thought and cared about them too— whatever they were back then. However, part of him was glad that they never put a label over what they had but he wasn’t sure why.

Was it because of rumors? No, those who knew about his and Nagi’s separation already referred to it as their “Break-up” no matter how many times he corrected them. It wasn’t because a label would give them more freedom either— in fact, it was more of the opposite. Back when they were together— no that sounds wrong Reo thought, no matter how many times he tells others they were never dating it seems the first person he needed to convince that of was himself. Back when they were “friends” Reo tried– but that title still sounded wrong. Had Nagi ever even considered themselves friends? Or was Reo just the rich pain guy who dragged him everywhere and forced him into soccer? Back when they were still Nagi and Reo he thought, much better, their actions never felt platonic. I mean he fed Nagi, carried him on his back, showered him, dried his hair, did his laundry— wow, Reo thought. Nagi had him, a multi-billion dollar heir of Japan’s biggest empire, practically working as his slave— Or his wife— Reo quickly pushed that thought away.

Had love made him act that way? Were Nagi’s trapping skills amazing enough to draw him in like that? (The answer was yes, and they would draw him in no matter how many times he saw them) Did Nagi ever care about him? Was their breakup— err fight— Reo’s fault or Nagi’s? Reo head began to buzz with questions— uh oh he was overthinking again. As Shidou got back up from his place on the floor he seemed to notice Reo’s face darken, deep in thought. Shidou reached out and held Reo’s face again with that same smirk plastered on his not dampened a bit by Reo’s attack.

“Damn purple bun! I didn’t know you were strong like that! Your pretty hot when your mad too!” Shidou teased.

“Not now Shidou,” Reo sighed “and get your hands off me before I throw you again” Reo barked with no bite. He didn’t want Shidou touching him but throwing him off the first time wore him out a bit and he doubted he could do it successfully again. Plus, he was still busy drowning in the millions of questions rushing through his mind. Although Shidou managed to pull him out of his mental whirlpool again he wasn’t sure if he was ready to leave either. Perhaps he if he drowned to death in there and all those thoughts would have been flushed away along with him.

Perhaps sensing Reo wasn’t in the mood, Shidou let his hand fall to Reo’s shoulder— somewhere more natural for them and their heavily one-sided friendship. “Nuh uh uh purple bun.” Shidou scolded “No more to those emo-i hate myself-depressing-crying-he loves me, he loves me not- thoughts. Can’t have you drowning in your tears again. Remember when I first found you?” Shidou said.

Remember? How could he forget? Reo had been at the worst point of his life back then. Kunigami had been locked-off (only to return shortly after to take the place of a player who left), Chigiri had been stolen, and of course, Nagi had ruthlessly broken his heart and ran away with a piece of it. How Reo had been surviving with half a heart this whole time? He couldn’t tell you himself.

In that match against Shidou and some random buzz-cutted monk-guy he had played half-heartedly (Yes he played with half of the half-heart he was already left with from Nagi). His passes were sloppy, his speed was delayed, and his overall game was as bad as when he first began soccer. He knew he was bringing Kunigami down as well but the guy was too nice to admit it. He was sure he’d be eliminated and thought Kunigami deserved to stay anyway. But then Shidou walked toward the disheveled and defeated Reo and held his face in between his fingers.

“I like you! You're coming with me!” he exclaimed. This guy was a pain. Was this how Nagi felt when Reo had first forced him to play soccer by his side? Now he felt bad for pestering the boy.

As much as Reo hated to admit it, Shidou really did save him back them. Even though he teased, taunted, and flirted with Reo he also helped him just as much. So, as much as he didn’t care, he forced himself to pay at least a little attention to what Shidou had to say. Reo left his crowded room of thoughts and turned to face Shidou.

“I’m perfectly fine, Yes I do remember, please don't remind me, and what do you want burnt cockroach.” Reo sneered, If he answered his questions quickly maybe he could escape this conversation (and Shidou’s grasp) and finally focus back on Ego’s speech of some sort.

“Playing hard to get huh? You’ll fall for me one day I promise!” Shidou started, “But what are you planning to wear to the party?” Party? What party? Reo thought. His confusion must’ve shown on his face because Shidou burst out laughing, earning them dirty glares from those around them (and Ego’s face plastered on the screen)

“You weren’t listening at all were you? Guess you were deep in thought about that boyfriend of yours” Shidou replied in between his laughs. Reo chose to ignore that second comment.

“If it makes you happy then no, I wasn’t listening now what party are you talking about?” Reo replied.

“So you really are daydreaming about him huh? You need to let go of that boy Mikage after what he did to yo—” Shidou was interrupted by a jab to his stomach from Reo to which he shrieked loudly in pain.

“Your really loud you know that cockroach NOW TELL ME ABOUT THI—” Reo shout-whispered aggravated. But he must’ve forgotten the whisper part because he was then loudly interrupted by Ego on the screen.

“Well, Mr. Mikage maybe if you paid attention to what I’ve been speaking about for the past few minutes, you’d have some idea as to what shadow here is referring to.” Ego said in a firm tone. Reo felt his face heat up in embarrassment as all eyes seemed to turn to him. He had always been a great student academically and behaviorally so being called out like this was still new to him.

“Hey purple bun, look it's us!” Shidou exclaimed while moving his hand back to Reo’s waist.
Before Reo could shout at him and jab him in the throat this time, his eyes betrayed him and followed Shidous's pointed finger toward the large screen in front of them. Sure enough, there were his and Shidou’s faces plastered to show his embarrassed state to those whose views were obscured.

“Say cheese purple!” Shidou jokes while posing as if he were going to kiss Reo’s cheek in the frame. Reo pushed him off (again) and Ego seemed to have had enough.

“ENOUGH THE TWO OF YOU! If you plan to continue interrupting me with your foolish plays then you can lock-off!” He shouted. Now that got their attention. “As I was saying, and for those like Mikage-kun who have missed it, before we continue on to the 3rd selection Blue Lock will be hosting a small celebration party open to soccer coaches around the world and dedicated members of the BLTV fanbase. The entire event will be live-streamed and TV crews from around Japan will be here. There will be drinks and games and the event will be held this Friday. Don’t make yourselves and Blue Lock look stupid because this will be some of the public's first up-close takes and interviews with you before the U-20 Exhibition Match. If you missed anything else get it from a friend. Your new dorm assignments will be displayed on the screen after this. That’s all for now diamonds in the rough. Train hard and prepare.” With that, Ego finally left the screen and the dorm assignments immediately replaced him.

Reo quickly searched for his name on the screen. He felt his heart drop as he saw another name right below his. Nagi Seishiro. No. He couldn’t room with Nagi. He couldn’t be near Nagi. If he even had to interact with him he didn’t know if he would break down right there. Heck just look at what happened to him after just being in a room with Nagi let alone interacting with him. Just as he began to get submerged in his thoughts again, Shidou came to his rescue.

“Hey purple bun, would you look at that were roomies again” Shidou exclaimed loudly. Some of the other strikers turned to face them again. Shidou was attracting too much attention to them, Reo had to get away— fast. Before could attempt a speedy escape, Shidou took his hand and continued his monologue.

“It's me, you, that lazy genius, short shark boy, and princess, not bad!” Shidou intertwined their fingers. “See even our names are right next to each other and were meant to be Reo-kun!” Reo looked at him with disgust but there was no real bite behind it. At least he had Chigiri and Kurona he thought. Reo was feeling tired after this morning's events yet the last thing he wanted to do was go to that shared room and risk running into Nagi. He yanked his hand out of Shidou’s grip and turned to leave the room.

Ugly, burnt, bleached hair, excessive eyeliner-wearer Shidou. What the hell was he doing touching Reo. During Ego's long non-sense ramble, Nagi had been watching Reo from afar. Only stopping once to ask Isagi when Reo and Shidou of all people had gotten so close.

What made Shidou think he had the right to touch Reo so explicitly? And why did Reo seem to be entertaining it? Nagi cursed under his breath as he watched Shidou try and kiss Reo on the cheek. The only thing stopping Nagi from marching over there right now and choking Shidou to his death were the Blue Lock suits they had on. He had seen Shidou get electrocuted by them first-hand and he’d rather not have that experience for himself (Also the fact he secretly knew Shidou could beat him up easily in a fight.)

Reo was his. He didn’t understand why he was letting Shidou touch all over him like that. They couldn’t have gotten that close over a week right?

Eventually, Ego finished his long rambling of a party of some sort, and dorm arrangements were plastered onto the screen. Isagi shook his arm to get his attention, forcing him to drag his eyes away from the love of his life. “Hey, lover boy look at that!” Isagi began “You're finally in a room with Reo again!” At the mention of Reo, Nagi forced his eye toward the screen and sure enough there he was. His name was right next to Reo’s, where it belonged.

“Look like we're rooming together genius” Chigiri stated just as Nagi read his name below Shidou’s. Oh. Shidou. That Ugly Burnt Roach would be rooming with him and Reo. Nagi’s jaw clenched at the thought. He’d have to make sure Shidou knew Reo was his so they could be together at last. Nagi flinched and turned around at Chigiri’s sudden loud groan. “I’m rooming with both the lovebirds? Great. I better not hear anything at night genius.” Chigiri complained as he made his way to exit the room.

It seemed like everyone already put Nagi and Reo together in their heads, and that's just how Nagi liked it. Now all he had to do was get that into the head of that life-sized cockroach and he’d be back to life with Reo as usual. Operation Reonagi he’d call it—- no Nagireo. Nagi smirked to himself at the perfect adjustment.

“Nagi, what do you plan to wear to the party?” Bachira asked, popping out from his spot next to Isagi. “Hey, Isagi we should match” Bachira continued with his excited chattering without waiting for an answer. Nagi zoned out of the conversation deep in thought, only picking up a few important details like “Friday” “Games and Food” “Guests” “Livestream” & “TV Crew” Slowly Operation Nagireo was starting to come together.

All Nagi had to do was dress up nice, get Reo’s attention at the dance, then pull a stunt— maybe kiss him on camera or something—- and get Shidou and the whole world to know that Reo was his and that they should back off. Nagi was already nodding to himself in approval imagining Reo’s soft lips on his and he watched the man in question chat with Shidou. He missed being spoiled desperately. When he asked any of his other teammates to feed him, dry his hair, or pat his head they all looked at him in confusion and some (Barou) lashed out at him in disgust.

“WHAT THE HELL DID YOU JUST ASK ME TO DO? WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK I AM YOUR MAID OR SOMETHING? IM NOT YOUR FUCKASS BOYFRIEND GOT FIND REO TO DO THAT SHIT FOR YOU YOU FAKE GENIUS” Nagi had tuned out the rest of his ramble. He doubted he would've wanted Barou drying his hair for him anyway. No matter who did it for him (if anyone out there was even willing to other than Reo) it wouldn’t feel the same unless it was that beautiful purple-haired boy. He had made a mental note to mess up their dorm, even more, that day and pour hot sauce in his blue lock branded toothpaste & face wash.

Nagi was quickly snapped back to the present as he watched Reo push Shidou off of him and exit the room. Once the door shut, Nagi turned back to the room assignments on the screen. All I need to do is prove Reo is mine and Reo already loves me right? His mind gave a quick flashback to when he and Reo first broke up during the second selection and how Reo slapped his hand back in the showers. Right. That. Reo wasn't mad about that. Right? Ok maybe he was a little mad, but it was nothing a look of specifically-for-convincing-Reo bug eyes couldn’t fix right? Right. So what if he had to win Reo back a little? They still loved each other— at least Nagi thought Reo did, but he couldn't be mad enough to stop loving him, Right? Enough with the questions Nagi thought.

Operation Nagireo was a go, how hard could it be?

Chapter 2: His Reo

Summary:

Things are already tense between Nagi and Reo, but running into each other in the bath? Yeah, that just makes it worse. Reo’s still dealing with his heartbreak, Nagi’s struggling with feelings he doesn’t understand, and Shidou—of course—is having the time of his life making it all worse. With Reo keeping his distance and Shidou all over him, Nagi’s left stewing, watching the one person he wants walk away.

Notes:

Hey guys, the next chapter is out!! It's pretty short, unfortunately, because I decided to split it into two separate chapters from what I originally had planned to be 1! I tried my best to take everyone's advice from the comments in Chapter 1 (shortening the monologues, keeping/making Shidou flirty, etc.), so I hope this chapter is better than the first! I think I might've written from Reo's pov during Nagi's pov for a few sentences, so I apologize, and I hope it isn't too confusing! Nagi is a tad bit freaky (at least in his thoughts) during this chapter, but I also tried to show how much he loves/admires Reo since I feel like I didn't emphasize it enough in the last chapter! Anyway, thanks to my bsf Nadia for reading over it for me and helping me out! Enjoy!!

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Reo began his way down the quiet Blue Lock corridors. The newly labeled dorms came into view, but his mind wasn’t focused on the upcoming challenges later. No, it was focused entirely on what he was going to do after his time in the baths. Sure the bath would earn him some time, but what would he do after? The bath might give him a moment of peace, but the thought of returning to their shared dorm made his chest tighten. He didn’t want to have to meet that harsh gaze. The gaze he saw as Nagi uttered the words that broke his heart.

“You're a pain, I don't care anymore.”

Soon, Reo reached the bathroom. After a quick rinse in the shower, he went to study himself in the mirrors. Reo had always been somewhat confident— being the heir of a multi-billion dollar empire and all— but he also believed he was somewhat attractive. Back at Hakuho, he couldn’t go a day without receiving love letters and confessions from his classmates and admirers. However, a dark part of Reo’s mind always forced him to believe it was for his money. That part of him forced himself to think no one would truly love him, especially Nagi.

As Reo began to be swallowed by his ocean of thoughts again, he couldn’t help but notice a flash of pink from the corner of his eye.

“Chigiri?” Reo called out. The pink-haired boy in question turned at the call as his lips curled into a grin of realization.

“Reo? It’s been a while!” He said grin softening at the sight of his best friend. “Have you been doing ok?” At the question, Reo glanced back to his reflection in the mirror. The dark circles under his eyes had lightened a bit yet, he still looked a bit disheveled. He wondered what Nagi thought of him now. His eyes darkened at the thought of Nagi looking at him in disgust. Shaming him for all of his misfortunes. Sure, Nagi hadn’t ever done anything like that before, but the look of disgust and annoyance on his face when he abandoned Reo still played fresh in his mind.

Chigiri (being the therapist of a friend he was) flicked Reo’s forehead and sighed. “Reo, you’re doing it again.” Reo jolted back to reality rubbing his temple in pain.

“Doing what?” He winced.

“Looking like you’re about to have a breakdown. Or start picking toothbrushes again” Before Reo could protest, Chigiri pulled him towards the baths. “Come on. Let’s catch up a bit” Reo followed blindly, still stuck deep in thought. Even though Chigiri had always been there for him, he wasn’t sure he wanted to dig deeper into his wound, after all, it already seemed to have been healing. However, Reo knew that if he didn’t treat it right, his thoughts would keep itching at it until it festered, infecting everything else and making it worse than it ever should have been.

The bath was warm, steam rising in thick curls as the two of them slipped into the water. Reo leaned back against the tile, feeling the tension ease from his muscles, though his thoughts were still tangled.

“So are you planning to tell me what's wrong,” Chigiri began, a small grin tugging at his lips. “Or do you plan on making me find out? Cuz I’ve got a pretty good guess in mind.”

Before Reo had a chance to deny whatever crazy thoughts were swirling in the pink-haired boy’s mind (even though he knew they probably were true.) A new voice interrupted them.

“Room for one more?” Reo knew that voice all too well— it was Shidou.

The blond grinned, already sinking into the bath far too close for comfort. His arms stretched along the edge, fingers just barely grazing Reo’s shoulder.

Reo tensed. “Geez Shidou, personal space?”

"Relax, pretty boy," Shidou hummed in amusement. "You’re always so high-strung." His fingers trailed, ghosting over Reo’s arm, with that wolfish smirk on his face, seeming satisfied at the way Reo’s muscles twitched at his touch.

Chigiri sighed, sensing that whatever chance of a conversation he planned to have with Reo was already gone. Reo gritted his teeth. He was seconds away from shoving Shidou off when—

The door slid open.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - – - - - - - - – - - - - -

After a quick pit stop at his new room, Nagi planned to take a quick bath before heading to bed. He hadn’t seen Reo since Ego’s speech and figured he’d bathe first before heading to dinner if he wasn’t already in their room. (just like they used to together during the First Selection)

Nagi was in a seemingly good mood. With Operation Nagireo in action, Nagi knew it was only a matter of time before he and Reo would be together again. Reo would call him his treasure and spoil him for the rest of his life, Happily Ever After. Nagi could practically feel Reo’s smooth, lean hands caressing through his tangled white locks as he entered the bathing room.

Nagi’s heart dropped— He hadn’t expected to walk in and see that.

Shidou leaning too close. His hands on Reo.

His Reo.

Annoyance hit first, it caused his gaze to darken, practically shooting daggers toward Shidou. If looks could kill, Shidou would be lying on the floor drowning in his blood right now. but then was the unfamiliar weight in his chest that made him pause.

His gaze shifted towards Reo, he was obviously tense, eyes narrowing and shooting a glare in Shidou’s direction. But Reo wasn’t making an effort to move him— at least not fast enough.

Nagi felt his stomach twist. Before he could even think about it, his feet were already moving.

Shidou glanced up lazily as Nagi stepped into the water, tilting his head with that same smirk as he tightened his grip on Reo.

"Ah, you too, Nagi? Guess we’re having a dorm reunion already hmm?" Shidou teased. Nagi didn’t bother to acknowledge the cockroaches’ existence. His gaze was laser-focused on Reo and the way his lips parted in surprise at Nagi’s sudden presence. He imagined their lips connecting, slipping his tongue in to fill the gap. Nagi suddenly felt woozy. He wasn’t sure if it was from the steam or the not-very-pg thoughts of him and Reo beginning to fill his mind.

Slowly, deliberately, Nagi lowered himself into the bath—right next to Reo. Their arms brushed as he slid into the tight space between him and Chigiri, Reo, tensing at his presence. Chigiri rolled his eyes as he moved over. If Nagi played his cards right, maybe he could fix this mess by the time they left—- saving himself from being the therapist of their situationship-of-some-sorts.

Shidou clicked his tongue as his grin widened. “Aww, someone’s jealous~” he teased. Nagi didn’t spare him a glance, his eyes still locked on Reo, who had refused to meet his gaze.

As Nagi watched him, the unfamiliar hole in his stomach grew. What was this feeling anyway? He wasn’t sure. But what he did know was that Shidou needed to move— Now.

Reo shifted beside him, gaze fixed on the water below them, stretching his arms over the bath’s edge, collarbones peeking above the water. The steam curled around his skin, catching on the damp strands of violet hair framing his face.

Nagi didn’t spare a second to blink. His gaze boring holes through Reo. Fuck. He’s so pretty—- not in a way that surprised him—he’d always known Reo was good-looking. But like this, under the glow of bath lights, flushed face, and half-lidded eyes from the heat, it was different. It was dangerous. He looked calm, less composed, guard down. It was getting harder for Nagi to restrain himself. Fuck. Fuckkkkk. He was whipped for this man. Nagi wanted to kiss him. hold him. touch him. fu— Nagi needed to slow his thoughts down, he was feeling woozy again.

Realizing his intense stare might be unsettling (and that Reo couldn't read his mind), Nagi gave his try at words, he needed to say something—- anything— But his words got caught in his throat. Damn. Reo didn’t know how much power he had over Seishiro. Operation Nagireo was proving to be harder than he thought.

Breaking out of his haze, Nagi fumbled together a few words to break the silence.

“You..okay?”

Reo turned his head, blinking as if he hadn’t expected Nagi to speak. For a second, he looked caught off guard—before his expression smoothed over.

“Yeah,” he said easily. “Why wouldn’t I be?”

Nagi frowned. That wasn’t true. He could tell.

Reo was doing that thing again—being polite, being distant, like he was putting up a wall even though they’d known each other forever— Okay maybe not forever but the time they spent together back when it was just them in their little world felt like forever. Nagi missed it. He missed them. He missed Reo.

Nagi felt his urges getting stronger, his hand unconsciously reaching towards Reo’s shoulder to move Shidou off (and hopefully take his place)

“Just feels like something’s bothering you,” Nagi murmured softly as he began to harshly pry Shidou’s hands off Reo's soft skin.

Reo shuddered at the ghost of the touch but regained his composure quickly. He exhaled sharply, letting out a half-laugh that didn’t reach his eyes. “What’s making you so concerned that you start caring now,” Reo shot back. “Is Isagi forcing you?”

“No, Reo. I’ve always cared” Nagi whispered, tilting his head as he moved his hand towards Reo’s nape, attempting to force Reo to look him in the eye.

Violet retinas met gray as he finally spared Nagi a glance. Nagi’s eyes were soft and knowing and Reo found himself getting lost in them again.

Reo looked at him for a moment, trying to find a response before something flickered in his gaze. He sighed and pushed himself up, water dripping from his skin, trailing down his collarbones & lean-yet-slim-and-toned waist. Nagi’s eyes chased after the droplets of water, taking in the sight of Reo’s unclothed upper half. Damn. He looked so good it was hypnotizing.

As his eyes finished their tour around Reo’s body, they focused back on his face. Reo’s flush deepened, whether it was from Nagi’s intense stare or the steam, he didn’t know (but he preferred the first option— knowing he still had some control over Reo’s emotions felt good)

Nagi was forced out of his daze as Reo muttered a quick “I’m heading out” while grabbing a towel.

Nagi opened his mouth—then shut it. He wanted to stop him. Tell him to stay. But before he could figure out how Reo was already stepping toward the exit.

And that’s when Shidou moved.

“Leaving so soon, purple bun?” Shidou purred, standing with a stretch, his toned shoulders rolling back as he trailed after Reo. “I’ll come with~”

Reo groaned. “You really don’t have to.”

“But I want to,” Shidou grinned, stepping further into Reo’s space like it was second nature. His fingers grazed Reo’s waist, his voice a low hum. “What, you don’t wanna be alone with me? I’m fun.” he teased.

Nagi felt his eye twitch as his fingers unconsciously curled into a fist.

Reo shot him an unimpressed look. “That’s one word for it.”

Shidou only laughed, tightening his arm around Reo’s waist, pulling him closer as they walked toward the door. But before they left, he turned—grinning straight at Nagi.

“Try not to miss him too much, ‘kay?” Shidou teased, voice dripping with amusement. “Or, y’know, stare at him like a lost puppy, we’ll try not to have too much fun without you~” he sang.

Nagi’s eyelids lowered and his vision darkened as he shot a cold glare towards Shidou.

Reo elbowed Shidou in the ribs. “Shut up.”

Shidou just laughed, tossing Nagi a knowing smirk before the door slid shut behind them. Leaving Nagi alone in the bath, water rippling around him, staring at the space Reo had just left.

Tch.

He hated Shidou.

Notes:

Thanks for reading! it means a lot to me, and Comments and Kudos are very much appreciated. I try to use them to improve my writing!! I hope the grammar wasn't too bad, and sorry that the chapter was short! The next one might be a little short as well since it was originally supposed to be a part of this one, but I'll try to post it tomorrow or Wednesday since I'm almost done anyway!!

Chapter 3: Torn

Summary:

Nagi is frustrated that Reo keeps ignoring him, while Reo is trying to move on but still feels conflicted. With some encouragement, Reo decides to go to go to the party. While Nagi finally put in effort to hopefully impress and get Reo's attention. Just as Nagi tries to make a move, he gets interrupted by unexpected circumstances, leaving him at a crossroads.

Notes:

Hey guys it's chapter 3!! There's an absences of Shidou in this chapter because I wanted to focus on Reo's relationship with Chigiri and Kurona (YES, I hc that kurona and reo and somewhat close friends after both having to deal with Shidou in 2nd selection, and that one additional time in the ep nagi movie) and yes I had include kurona because he's my fav bluelock character (after reo ofc) I also wanted to a show a FRIENDLY relationship between Isagi and Nagi because thats Nagi's therapist! Anyways I hope you enjoy & sorry if its a little short!

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Nagi slumped across the couch in Isagi’s room, a deep frown covering his usual unexpressive face. He’d escaped to Isagi’s room after another day of unsuccessful attempts at Operation Nagireo. Sitting in the same room as Reo, feeling the unspoken tension between them—it was suffocating.

Nagi couldn’t take it anymore.

He’d tried, again, to get Reo’s attention, but every attempt was met with avoidance, cold glances, and short answers. It was like trying to talk to a ghost of the Reo he used to know. It almost felt like Reo— the Reo he used to know– the Reo that would spoil him and treat him like he was the most precious treasure, never existed.

There were a few hours until the party, and Nagi hadn’t even made it past Operation Nagireo: Phase 1.

Whenever he tried to talk to Reo, it was like hitting a wall. He'd waited outside their dorm—Reo ignored him. He’d sat beside him at lunch—Reo didn’t bother to acknowledge his presence. He’d even reached out, grabbing his wrist once, Reo’s eyes widened slightly but he regained his composure quickly, and gently pried himself free.

They were like strangers. Like all of their history— their dreams— had been forgotten the minute they were separated for a bit. Couldn’t Reo see it was for their dream? Didn’t Reo know Nagi did it all for him? If he did, he didn’t seem to care (If the cold shoulder he was giving Nagi was any sign.) They hadn’t had a somewhat actual conversation since the day at the bath.

2 days ago, Nagi thought to himself, he was suffering from Reo withdrawals at this point. He needed him, but clearly, the feeling wasn’t mutual.

And it sucked.

"You're really just gonna sit there and sulk?" Isagi asked, raising an eyebrow.

"What else am I supposed to do?" Nagi muttered.

"I dunno, maybe stop acting like a dying puppy and actually talk to Reo?"

Nagi exhaled sharply, was it that obvious that Reo was the cause of his excessive sluggishness? Shutting his eyes, he replied dryly. "Tried that already. Didn’t work."

Isagi sighed, finger waggling towards Nagi. "Dude, he liked you. Like, liked you. It was obvious. You were just too lazy to notice."

Nagi’s eyes flickered open, his chest tightening. "…Yeah?" Reo liking him? Sure he thought the same at first but now he wasn’t sure. With the way he had been ignoring him, Nagi wouldn’t be surprised if Reo actually hated him. He groaned, rolling over to face Isagi, “And don’t use past tense. Please.”

"Yeah," Isagi smirked at the hopeless loverboy. He paused, considering Nagi’s last comment before starting again. "Still kinda does, if you ask me. But at the rate you're going? Not for long."

Nagi frowned. "What’s that supposed to mean?"

"I mean," Isagi said, tilting his head, "if you keep moping around doing nothing, you’ll end up pushing him away. Don’t forget he’s attractive to more people than just you, someone else is gonna swoop in. And then you’ll lose him forever."

Nagi didn’t need someone to remind him of how attractive Reo was. Back at Hakuko, endless lines of girls and guys would confess their undying love to the Mikage Heir. But Reo, always politely reject them or delay their confessions (using soccer practice with Nagi as an excuse.) Sometimes a strange feeling would come over Nagi, he’d feel the need to swoop in and make it clear that Reo wasn’t interested (and that he belonged to him.)

But Lose him forever? Nagi hadn’t thought about that.

They made a promise to stay together, be the best in the world together. Reo wouldn’t break that promise, right? He’d be by his side until the end right? Nagi needed him there. He couldn’t lose Reo. He wouldn’t. Something about these thoughts made Nagi’s stomach twist uncomfortably. He shifted in his seat, suddenly restless.

“What do I do then?" he muttered.

Isagi gave him a look. "First off? Maybe stop looking like a guy who just crawled out of bed. Which, knowing you, you probably did. So, let's fix that." He scolded as he searched for something in his nightstand drawer.

Nagi scowled. "What’s wrong with how I look?"

Isagi rolled his eyes. "You already know Reo's getting all dressed up. You gotta step it up, man. He’s a future heir of a multi-billion dollar empire, you’ve got to make yourself somewhat worthy of him.”

Before Nagi could protest, Isagi was already grabbing a brush, running it through Nagi’s tangled mess of hair.

"Ow," Nagi grumbled. This felt nothing like when Reo combed his hair for him.

"Stop being a baby. You wanna impress him or not?"

Nagi sighed heavily, humming in response. Reo really didn’t know how much power he had over Seishiro.

—- - – - - - - - - - - – - - - - – - - - - – - — – - - - - - - - - -

Reo sat on the edge of his bed, hands gripping the sheets. His stomach churned, his mind looping through the same frustrating thoughts.

Going to this party had seemed like a great idea at first. A distraction, a way to prove to himself that he could have fun, that he didn’t need to keep getting caught up in feelings for someone who clearly didn’t care. A way to prove he was someone outside of just Nagi’s partner.

But now? Now, the thought of walking into that room, being surrounded by people, seeing Nagi—it made his chest feel tight.

Especially because, deep down, some small part of him still wanted him. His fingers twitched, instinctively covering his face in embarrassment as his thoughts betrayed him.

He wanted to be the one Nagi yearned for in a crowded room, the one he leaned into when he was tired, the one he touched—hands resting on Reo’s waist, squeezing his hips, pulling him close. Reo wanted to know what it felt like to have Nagi’s lips on him. He wanted to tilt his head up and let himself be kissed. He wanted to feel wanted in a way that wasn’t about soccer. He wanted to be wanted by Nagi the way he wanted him.

For a second, he could almost feel it. Nagi’s touch on him. Nagi’s eyes on him. Nagi’s lips on him. Nagi’s attention on him and only him.

He squeezed his eyes shut. No. No, stop it. He couldn’t let himself think like that—not anymore. Not when he was trying to get over him.

A frustrated sigh left his lips. He ran a hand through his silky, purple hair, gripping at the strands. He needed to stop thinking like this. He needed to move on, seriously.

Which meant not backing out of this stupid party.

"You're still going, right?" Chigiri’s voice cut through his thoughts, and Reo slightly flinched, glancing up at him and Kurona.

Reo hesitated. “I” he paused. “Honestly, I’m not sure.”

Kurona crossed his arms. "Reo, you were excited about this whole thing. You can't back out now, now."

"Yeah, I know, but—" Reo swallowed. His voice and gaze lowered. “I just don’t know if I can handle a party tonight, there are some people I don’t want to see.”

Chigiri sat down beside him, giving him a knowing look. “Nagi, you mean?” Reo’s jaw clenched and he tensed slightly at the mention of his name. Was it that obvious? Or could Chigiri just read him that well? Still, he nodded at Chigiri’s guess.

He could already imagine it—Nagi standing there, acting like nothing was wrong like the last few weeks of silence and avoidance between them hadn’t been ripping Reo apart. Sure he seemed to try and make a sight effort to maintain a relationship. And sure Reo had been avoiding him and his poor efforts. But if Nagi really wanted to fix what they had, he would try harder right? He would apologize, right?

But the worst part wasn’t his obliviousness to what he’s done wrong & how much he’s hurt Reo, it was his eyes.

He didn’t ever want to look into those eyes. Those eyes that once looked at him with warmth and love. Those eyes that brought comfort and smiles to Reo's face. But Reo didn’t remember that. Reo could only remember when those eyes had looked at him with hatred and disgust while the words “You're a pain” and “I don’t need you anymore” rang like a shattered echo through his head. No. Reo didn’t want to remember that either. He wanted to forget Nagi and move on. If he wanted to achieve their— his dream of the World Cup he couldn’t let himself fall into a doomed spiral again. Not because of Nagi, he thought to himself, because he didn’t want to have to be saved by Shidou again.

Nagi’s eyes had always been impossible to read, but lately, whenever they did meet, it felt like they burned through him. Like there was something there—something Reo couldn't handle seeing.

“What if he looks at me like that again?” Reo muttered. “Like I’m nothing to him?”
Chigiri and Kurona exchanged a glance before Chigiri sighed, reaching out to flick Reo’s forehead lightly.

“Ow—what the hell?” he winced in pain.

“You’re overthinking again,” Chigiri said. “Who cares how he looks at you? He’s the one who messed up. You don’t owe him anything.”

"Yeah," Kurona chimed in. "You should just go, have fun, and stop worrying about him. If he’s worthy of you he’ll make another effort tonight! Promise, promise."

Reo bit his lip. “I don’t know if I can.”

Chigiri smirked. “Then maybe you just need a little push.”

And just like that, they started getting him ready.

.

..

"Stay still," Chigiri muttered, carefully twisting a small section of hair into a neat, intricate braid.

"Hard to do when you keep pulling," Reo teased, smirking.

Chigiri flicked his forehead. "Stop moving. You wanna look good or not?"

Reo chuckled, sarcastically flinging his hand outwards like a snobby prince. "I always look good."
Kurona snickered from across the room. "I’m sure Nagi agrees with that."

“Oh my god shut upppp” Reo groaned as Chigiri flicked his forehead again in an attempt to stop him from moving.

Chigiri shook his head, finishing the braid. "Yeah, yeah, whatever, prince charming. Now, what are you wearing?"

Reo gestured towards the outfit he had set aside—a simple but stylish shirt and jeans. Chigiri frowned.
He shook his head while simultaneously pushing Reo’s outfit aside. “That’s not gonna do, too boring” he complained.

“Excuse me??” Reo shot back.

"You’re trying to make an impression tonight, right? Then dress like it." Chigiri lectured.

Kurona grinned "Yeah, go for something flashier. Make Nagi suffer a little."

Reo huffed but let Chigiri start rummaging through his closet. He pulled out a sleeker, more fitted top with a few accessories to elevate the look. "Now this is how you make an entrance," Chigiri said smugly while returning to finish Reo’s braid.

Reo sighed dramatically. "Fine, fine. But you need to pick your own outfit too, Mr Hero-lover."

Chigiri’s hands froze mid-braid. "…What?"

Reo smirked. "Come on, Chigiri. You and Kunigami? Please. You talk about him like he’s your personal hero or something. If I have to dress up like this then you do too!

Kurona burst out laughing. "Oh my god, it’s true."

Chigiri’s ears reddened to match the shade of his hair. "Shut up. He’s just—he’s just a good guy, and a friend of mine okay? Nothing else!"

"Right, right," Reo agreed sarcastically, eyes glinting. "A good guy you totally don’t stare at when he’s shirtless. If you want him so bad just be extra damsel-in-distress-y and your hero will
come save you. "

Chigiri flicked him again. "Focus on your own love life, dumbass. You're the last one who should be giving advice!"

Reo chuckled, shaking his head as Chigiri finished up the final touches.

.

..

"Alright," Chigiri finally said, stepping back, proud of his makeover. "You’re ready!"

Reo turned to look at himself in the mirror. His hair was styled, a beautiful braid woven onto the side of his hair. His eyeliner was sharp and brought the color out his violet eyes even more. His outfit the shirt hugging his frame tightly, showing off his toned torso in a way that was just enough to tease but not too much to seem like he was trying. The fabric clung to him in all the right places, accentuating his shape, while the open collar left just a hint of collarbone exposed.

Wow he thought, Chigiri really knows what he’s doing!

Chigiri, standing back with his arms crossed, smirked. "Damn, Reo. You actually look kinda hot."

Kurona nodded in agreement. "Yeah, you’re definitely going to turn some heads tonight."

Reo turned to the mirror, running a hand through his freshly styled hair. His gaze flickered to his reflection, and for a second, he allowed himself to wonder—would Nagi notice? Would he finally look at him, really look at him, and regret everything? And apologize?

His stomach twisted at the thought. But then he sighed, shaking his head. No. It’s not about Nagi. Tonight, it was about him. About moving on.

Still… as much as he looked ready, his stomach churned. "Do I really have to go?" he muttered.

Chigiri and Kurona exchanged glances before simultaneously shoving him toward the door.

"Yes!"

Reo looked back at the two with a smile. As much as he’d rather stay here and hang out with them, he knew he couldn’t hide forever. He could feel their expectant stares, waiting for him to make his exit.

“I know, I know,” he sighed, adjusting the sleeves of his shirt. “I should go.”

Chigiri smirked. “Damn right you should! I didn’t braid your hair for nothing!”

Kurona grinned, nudging Reo’s shoulder. “You’re not seriously going to back out now, are you? You can’t let Nagi win!”

Reo bit his lip. They were right. He couldn’t just sit here, and let his fear of being hurt again hold him back. As much as it hurt, as much as the thought of locking eyes with Nagi made his chest tighten, he needed to do this—for himself— to move forward.

“Okay,” Reo stated, letting out a deep breath while taking a step forward. “I’m gonna head out now, kay? I’ll see you guys there right?” Chigiri and Kurona nodded in unison as they grabbed onto each other sarcastically.

“Make us proud son,” Chigiri fake-sniffled.

“He’s all grown up now, now” Kurona said as he wiped his eyes

“Oh my goddd, shut up you two!” Reo said in between giggles. As annoying and pushy as they were, they had always been there for him, and he couldn’t thank them enough for that.

“Bye now, see you in a bit!” and with that Reo made his way to the party, ready to face whatever came his way next.

– - - - - - - - - - - - – - - – - - - - – - - - – - - – - - - - -

Nagi stood in front of the mirror, his usual slouch worse than ever as he tugged at the collar of the shirt Isagi had forced on him. It wasn’t even uncomfortable, but it felt foreign—too put-together—too not-like-him.

“Quit fidgeting,” Isagi scolded, adjusting Nagi’s sleeves.“You actually look decent for once. Maybe Reo will actually wanna look at you now.” He teased.

Nagi scowled. “Shut up.” He finally turned his gaze towards the mirror. He was wearing one of Isagi’s shirts—- and It fit surprisingly well—not too tight, not too loose. He blinked at his reflection in the mirror. Huh. He actually looked…good.

He barely had time to process it before Isagi shoved a small bottle into his hand. "Cologne. Just a spray. Now." Nagi frowned but did as Isagi said. The scent was sharp and he didn’t enjoy it much but, maybe Reo would notice. Maybe he’d care. Maybe he’d see how much Nagi was willing to do for him.

Would Reo even care?

Reo always used to be the one fixing him up, making sure his shirt was tucked in school, ruffling his hair after practice, murmuring about how Nagi could be so much more if he just tried a little. Now, he was standing here without him. With Isagi and it just—

It didn’t feel the same.

He sighed. “Let’s get this over with.”

.

..

.

The party was in full swing when Nagi arrived. The Blue Lock cafeteria had been transformed into a large ball room, table no where to be seen.
Music thrummed through the air, people crowded in every direction—- from coaches to guests to even U-20 Japan players he had recognized from Ego’s speech. Laughter and conversation blended into background noise, and the world around Nagi blurred.

Because his gaze was locked on Reo.

Time seemed to stop.

Reo stood near the buffet, effortlessly poised, dressed in something sleek that only made him look even more irresistable. His hair, usually a little messy after practice, was styled perfectly.

The outfit he wore hugging his frame in a way that was completely unfair. He wasn’t just pretty. He was beautiful—no, he was unreal. Like some kind of fantasy brought to life. And it hit Nagi like a truck.

A strange, desperate feeling clawed at Nagi’s chest. He wanted to go to him. He wanted to touch him, to hold his hand, to pull him close by the waist, to press his forehead against his and whisper I miss you, I need you, I love you.

But he couldn’t. Not yet. He had to finish Operation Nagireo. He had to talk to him first. But just as he took a step forward, a flash of blond caught his eye.

Shidou.

He whistled. "Mmm, I knew you had a slutty side, Pretty Boy. I like it." His arm draped around Reo’s shoulder, too damn familiar, too damn close.

Then he leaned in, saying something too low for Nagi to hear—but whatever it was, it made Reo laugh, and something unpleasant settled in Nagi’s stomach.

Then, as if to twist the knife deeper, Yukimiya—the ever charming model-soccer-rich boy —added something, his voice smooth, his gaze appreciative. "You really outdid yourself tonight, Mikage. Stunning, as always."

Reo’s lips quirked upward. "You flatter me, Yukki! I didn’t dress up that much" He said giggling clearly pleased with the attention.

Nagi’s stomach twisted. This is what Isagi had warned him about. The words from earlier echoed in his mind.

“ If you keep moping around doing nothing, you’ll end up pushing him away.

Someone else is gonna swoop in. And then you’ll lose him forever. “

Was this what he meant? Was it already too late?

No.

No.

He wasn’t going to run away. He wasn’t going to mope around anymore. Reo was his— is his—-or at least, he was going to be again.

He wasn’t going to lose Reo. He wasn’t going to let a couple of flirty idiots take his place. He took a step forward—

Only for a firm hand to grab his wrist.

Isagi’s voice cut in, “Ego needs you. Now.”

Nagi blinked, irritation sparking. “What? Right now?”

Isagi’s expression was unreadable. “Yes. It’s important. I think–”

Nagi hesitated, glancing back at Reo. He was still talking, still smiling at whatever nonsense Yukimiya was saying.

He had to talk to him. He needed to talk to him

Frustration bubbled up, but Isagi’s hold left no room for argument. With a heavy sigh, Nagi let himself be pulled away, throwing one last glance over his shoulder—

And at that exact moment, Reo finally looked up. Their eyes met. For the first time all night.

And all Reo saw was Nagi turning away. Being dragged away, without even a second thought.

As if he didn’t care.

As if he never cared at all.

And just like that, whatever fragile hope had been clinging inside Reo shattered—- But the hope in Nagi’s heart only grew.
