Chapter Text
The shelter workers dragged the beaten, bloodied, and half-conscious hybrid to a cell room, throwing him on the floor in front of 7 other hybrids.
"This was the third time he was returned," sneered the worker with greasy slick-backed hair, "that means he gets put down tomorrow. If you 7 don't agree to be adopted separately, you'll be joining him."
The shelter worker walked out of the room, slamming and locking the door while whistling cheerfully as he walked away. Meanwhile, the other 7 hybrids crowded around their friend on the floor, Seonghwa carefully lifting his head to place in his lap.
"Sannie," Wooyoung cries out, holding San's hand.
"Sannie, what happened?" Hongjoong asks, rubbing Sans arm gently.
"It was a hybrid fighting ring," San cries, refusing to open his eyes, not that he could open both, considering one his right eye was swollen shut, "I couldn't kill the other hybrids like they wanted, I'm sorry."
"It’s ok, Sannie," Yunho replies calmly.
"It's not ok, now they're going to kill you with me." San sobs uncontrollably, barely able to get the next words out, "I don't want you to die too."
"It's ok, San," Seonghwa whispers while cradling the crying man's head, not letting anyone see the tears spill from his own eyes. "Everything will work out, you'll see. We'll be ok."
The 8 hybrids stayed huddled together for a few minutes before they move to their beds, which were nothing more than flimsy blankets filled with holes. Slowly, one by one, they each begin to fall asleep, the younger 4 crying themselves to sleep while they older 4 held in their tears, too on edge to let themselves fall asleep, they flinch at every sound coming through the facility. When they heard two sets of footstep coming towards their cage, Yeosang tightens his hold on Jongho and Wooyoung while Seonghwa held San, and Yunho cradle Mingi, Hongjoong moves to sit in front of everyone, trying to block them from the view of whoever was approaching, with his small body.
Two workers appeare in front of the cage, the greasy haired employee named Mike, and the employee with yellow teeth, missing his front one, called Carl. They enjoyed spending their time harassing the hybrids in the shelter, but their favorite targets were the group of 8. Mike stood by the door smirking as he looked over the huddled hybrids.
“Up front now!” Mike demands. Causing all 8 to jump and slowly line up by the door, kneeling on the ground. “I have some good news, we found homes for all of you, except San, he dies in the morning, no exception, but if you agree, you all get to live.”
“Seonghwa gets to go to a nice breeding farm or a brothel, we will let you pick,” Carl laughs as he reads off a paper, meanwhile Seonghwa grips his thighs tightly, holding back tears. “Yeosang will be going to the brothel, Ming and Yunho will be working in the mines to test for gas build up, Wooyoung, Jongho, and Hongjoong will be sent to medical labs as test subjects for new medications or some shit like that.”
“You hear that Seonghwa,” Mike says leaning down in front of the hybrid, “you’re the only one that gets a choice, now say thank you master.”
Seonghwa bit his lip, wanting to yell out and curse the two men, but not trusting his voice as he thinks about how everyone's lives will be ruined. Hybrids were made by humans, then abused, and abandoned by humans. Out of all the different types, rabbit hybrids were on of the most unique and one of the saddest hybrid stories. Scientists, for whatever reason, decided to make it so both female and males could be impregnated. It was wasn’t easy to get a male hybrid pregnant, and the pregnancies were extraordinarily difficult, but humans decided to make a game of it. They hosted insemination parties, bringing mass groups of men to try their luck at who could impregnate the poor hybrids for a prize. Then the rabbits were left to suffer through their pregnancy alone, only to go through it all again, if they survived giving birth.
Mike opens the door, walking in smugly as he looked at the hybrids kneeling on the floor, knowing that they wouldn’t attack him no matter what he did. He walks up and down the row, looking at each hybrid closely, paying attention to their features. Stopping in front of Hongjoong, Mike kneels and grabs his face, roughly turning it to each side before pushing away from him and standing. Before Hongjoong could take another breath, Mike grabs him by the hair yanking him to his feet and pinning him to the cage wall. Wrapping his hand around Hongjoongs throat, he lifts Hongjoongs small body up in the air, enjoying the feeling of how Hongjoong struggled for air, trying to free himself.
“Maybe you won’t go to a lab,” Mike laughs, licking, kissing, and biting what he could reach of Hongjoongs neck, grinding his hips against the hybrids, as he got excited by Hongjoongs whimpers and choking noises. “I think I’m going to take you to one of those sex parties, you know, the ones where a hybrid takes over 60 men in one night. What I wouldn’t give to see your broken and useless body afterwards, I wonder how squirrels compare to rabbits.”
“PLEASE STOP!” Seonghwa yells from behind them, unable to watch or listen to anything more, especially when he sees Hongjoongs face turning purple from the lack of oxygen, his grip on Mikes arm starting to loosen as his body grows limp. “PLEASE!”
Mike whips around and stares at Seonghwa before throwing Hongjoong onto the ground, kicking him in the ribs as he coughs and gasps for air. Stomping towards Seonghwa, Mike grabs Seonghwa by his ears, dragging him out of the cage and letting Carl slam the door shut before anyone could react. Pulling Seonghwa into the empty cell across the hall, Mike chains him to the wall. Carl moves out of the hybrids way so they can watch what's about to happen.
“I figured, you’re going to be used for breeding no matter what, that’s all you bunnies are good for anyway,” Mike sneers unbuckling his pants, “so I may as well get a taste of what you have to offer. Isn’t that what you wanted when you asked me to stop? You wanted to take his place, you wanted to be treated like a true bunny right.”
Mike grabs Seonghwa’s shirt and rips it open, while Seonghwa cries, unable to get his arms free from the shackles, shackles that were installed in every cage just in case a hybrid got out of control. Seonghwa opens his eyes and watches as his friends try to break their door open, crying and begging for Mike to stop, with no luck.
Mike undoes his pants and pulls himself out walking closer to the bound man.
“If you bite me, they all die instantly,” Mike laughs, lining himself up with Seonghwa’s mouth, “and after, Carl will want to take you for a spin.”
Just before Mike could touch his tip to Seonghwa’s mouth, they hear a yell from down the hall.
“Mike, Carl, we have a meeting, get your asses in here now!” Yells the owner of the shelter, leaving no room for arguing.
“That man always knows how to ruin the fun,” Mike growls to Carl while he zips himself up, “throw the bunny back in his cell, and let’s go.”
Carl unshackles Seonghwa and throws him in the cell with the others before they disappear, leaving Seonghwa to grip his torn shirt around himself while the others hug him, all of them sobbing uncontrollably.
“Maybe…maybe,” Jongho cries, unable to get his words out between sobs, “maybe death won’t be all that bad.”
No one responds at this point, understanding his feelings as they all feel the same. If they died, no more pain, torture, sexual harassment, or anything else. However, they still didn’t want to die, not really. Laying down and curling around each other, they wait for the death sentence that was coming for them in the morning.
“Wake up! Line up, standing, hands out!” Mike barks at the hybrids, waking them from their fitful sleep.
Each hybrid slowly moves into a line, dread filling their bodies as their wrists and ankles are shackled together and muzzles put over their faces. Soon, they are led down the hall to the euthanasia room, some not able to stop the sobs that rip from their throats.
“You’re going last,” Mike whispers in Seonghwa’s ear and he grabs Seonghwa’s ass. “You’re going to watch as each one of them dies, then, you’re coming home with me. You’re too good looking to not be filled every day. I’m going to make sure you have no energy to leave my bed. I’m also going to have frequent parties, 5 dollars for whoever wants to have you. But first, you have to watch all of your friends die,” he finishes laughing before locking Seonghwa in the waiting cage with everyone else, but San, shackling all the hybrids to the wall. The other 6 hybrids quickly move Seonghwa behind them as best they could, as far away from Mike as possible before turning their attention to San who is being strapped to the table, tears pouring out of his eyes as the technicians insert the needle into his arm.
“I don’t want to die,” San cries, when his muzzle is removed, eyes squeezed close tightly as tears stream down his face, his body bordering hyperventilating. “I don’t want to die and I don’t want them to die.”
“Wait!”
------------------------------------------- a few minutes earlier ----------------------------------
“I will see you in 30 minutes to an hour,” You say, parking your car outside the hybrid shelter. “It’s not a problem, don’t worry about it, I’m happy to help.”
You hang up your phone as you cross the parking lot, entering the shelter and walking to the front desk, looking down the hall to see a group of 8 hybrids crying as they are led into a dark looking room.
“How can I help you?” Asks the secretary after the door closes.
“I’m here to pick up some hybrid medication; it should be under the name Mrs. Roe.” You respond, leaning on the counter, “what was wrong with them?” You ask nodding your head towards where they hybrids disappeared.
“They’re being euthanized-“
“What the fuck?!” You ask, interrupting the secretary.
“They are being euthanized, they refuse to be adopted separately and one has been returned three times when he was forcibly adopted out.”
“How do I stop it?”
“You pay $3,000 and sign this paperwork that I already filled out, all it needs is a signature at the yellow flags,” the secretary replies hurriedly shoving a stack of papers at you.
“You were prepared,” you comment as you hand over your debit card and start signing by the flags, berating yourself for not actually reading the contract you’re currently signing.
“I’ve been hoping someone would come for them for a long time so I was prepared just in case. I’ve always been prepared just in case,” she says handing you the receipt as you pull out your phone and call someone.
“No more talking, let’s go,” you reply, gesturing for her to walk as you finish the paperwork. “Kim, how close are you to 5823 Rosedale Lane?” You ask into the phone.
“Few minutes why?” The voice, Josh Kim, answers over the phone.
“I’m calling in a favor, get your ass here now, bring backup, go past the front desk take a left, door at the end of the hall,” you say, hanging up.
Once you sign the last box, of the papers, the secretary opens the door and yells “Wait!” looking up you see a hybrid strapped to the table, crying as a man begins to attach a syringe to the needle in the hybrids arm.
“This woman adopted all 8 of the hybrids, the paperwork is signed and she already paid,” the secretary states quickly thrusting the papers at the men in the room.
“It’s too late,” the man with the syringe scoffs, as he goes back to what he was doing.
“Let me make this clear,” you growl, stepping forward, staring the man down, “you remove that needle from my hybrids arm right the fuck now, or I do, and shove through your fucking throat!”
The man glares at you and throws the syringe back on the tray before pulling the needle out carelessly. Meanwhile, you keep eye contact with the jackass as you approach the table and begin to undo the restraints on the hybrids arms and legs, helping him up. You turn around and see the other 7 hybrids still held in the cage.
“Release them and then take all 8 of them to the reception area please,” you ask the receptionist.
She nods and begins undoing the restraints to the wall of the caged hybrids, ushering them out of the room when they are freed, before a greasy haired man grabs the bunny hybrid by the ears, yanking him back and wrapping his arm around the poor hybrids throat.
“Seonghwa!” Someone yells from behind you, but you aren't sure who, and you don’t care to find out at this moment, though you can guess it was the hybrid on the table since the others are muzzled. Your eyes are glued to this man and your hybrid, that he decided to put in a chokehold.
“Get them out of here,” you say to the receptionist, as calmly as possible, not allowing your anger to get the best of you.
Once you hear the door shut, you begin to speak again.
“How many hybrids have you killed since last May?” You ask, slowly walking around, making sure to keep tabs on everyone in the room while also watching that this greasy haired bastard doesn’t hurt your hybrid. “Did you know that it is illegal to euthanize a hybrid that wasn’t terminally ill for the past year? Any hybrids euthanized since then are considered a murder charge. They passed that law last May…That means, every hybrid you fuckers euthanized, will be counted as murder. So tell me…how many have you killed?”
You stand by a door on the opposite side of the room from which you came in, grabbing the handle and opening it, only to get hit with the unforgettable smell of death and decomposition. You turn on the light and see dozens upon dozens of hybrid bodies piled up in the room before pulling the door shut.
“I count over 40 bodies in there now, which means it’s at least going to be 40 counts of murder and well as 8 attempted murders, and the police should be here any minute.”
“Fuck off bitch,” the man missing a tooth exclaims, spitting towards your feet.
Just then the door opens and multiple police enter the room, demanding everyone to freeze and put their hands in the air. You walk over to Josh, who is staring down the man holding the bunny and show him the adoption papers in your hand, pointing at the bunny’s name.
“You’re Seonghwa?” The Josh asks the bunny, earning a small nod from him. “Let him go, sir, or do I need to add assault to your list of crimes?”
“Mike, just let that damn thing go,” one of the other men yell, earning a scoff from Mike, before he throws Seonghwa to the ground.
Police quickly move in and cuff Mike, before leading everyone out of the room. You nod your head at the door, hiding the decaying hybrids, alerting Josh to go look in the room. You hear him cuss before the door slams shut, and he appears in front of you.
“Unfortunately, this is still happening,” he says. “Thanks for sending calling. Hopefully, I wasn’t too late.”
“Not for these ones. Thanks for getting here quickly, or I may have shot that bastard,” you reply shaking his hand, “see you later Josh.”
Josh nods and walks out of the room calling in the need for evidence teams and the counties coroner’s office to remove the bodies, leaving you to look down at Seonghwa. You look back at the table that the other hybrid was strapped to and see the keys that you used to unshackle your hybrid with. Grabbing the keys, you approach the scared bunny, keeping your hands in his view the entire time.
“I’m going to take the muzzle and cuffs off, ok?” You say, getting a small nod in reply.
Carefully, you remove the muzzle from his head, reaching behind him to undo the buckles, letting it fall to the ground as you examine the bruises beginning to form from it being bound to tight. You make quick work of the cuffs on his wrists and ankles, looking at the bruises forming there, frowning at how marked up he is. When you begin to look up, you notice his torn shirt, small tears made in it so that the front could be tied close.
“Wanna get out of here, Seonghwa?” You ask standing and holding your hand out to him. He meekly nods and shakily takes your hand, standing unsteadily.
The two of you walk out to the reception area where you see your other 7 hybrids, 6 of them still chained together and muzzled, while the one who was strapped to the table was free and hugging the fox hybrid, clinging to the fox like his life depended on it. As you approach, all seven hybrids eyes turn to you, watching you carefully.
“I’m going to take the muzzles and cuffs off,” you say holding up the key and approaching the closest hybrid, who tenses when your hand gets close to him.
Seonghwa practically clings to you the entire time you are removing the restraints from your hybrids, you assume so he can make sure you don’t hurt any of them. You notice the same problems on them that you did on Seonghwa; they are all bruised from the restraints being too tight.
“See that red SUV out in the parking lot,” you say to what you assume is a squirrel hybrid, based on the ears and tail, “will all of you go wait by it? I will be right out.”
He nods, and they exit the building, looking back at you every few steps as they walk away. You turn and walk to the reception desk, seeing the secretary sitting there looking around nervously as the police remove file after file from the cabinet. Grabbing the medication on the counter and your remaining paperwork, you give her some advice.
“Try to cut a deal with the district attorney, say you will testify to anything you can if they want.”
With that, you turn and walk to your car. On the way you pull out your phone and text your friend Marco, saying ‘Meet me at my house ASAP, bring your kit.’
“I didn’t expect to adopt 8 hybrids today,” you say looking at the group huddled around your car, “this only seats 7, so you two will have to sit on someone's lap until we get home.”
They nod and climb in, the squirrel and fox being the two that sit on someone’s lap. You throw your car in drive and make your way home, silently. You’ve never been good with talking to people, you never know what to say, and honestly would much rather be alone than be around others. Now you have 8 lifetime commitments sitting in your car and it’s a little daunting.
You’re unsure what to say to them, and continue to rehearse your introduction in your head. When you were about 10 minutes away from your home, you stop at a house and park the car.
“I’ll be back, I just need to drop this off real quick,” you say, holding up the box that you picked up from the shelter.
The hybrids don’t respond, and you get out of the car, approaching the house. Knocking on the door, you wait for the older lady to answer.
“Y/n, how are you,” Mrs. Roe asks as she answers the door, “thank you so much for picking this up for me. The vet called and they said that the medicine should be back in by the time it needs refilled, so you won’t have to pick it up for me again.”
Mrs. Roe motions for you to come in, and as you enter her home, you see her hybrid laying on the couch wrapped in blankets and sleeping soundly.
“He’s having a pretty bad flare-up and it doesn’t help that the doctor didn’t inform me that his medication was on back order and wouldn’t be coming in this month, which is why I had to hurry and find a place that has the medication in stock.”
“Well, I’m always happy to help. And if you need anything to help him through this flare just ask,” you respond, setting the box on her kitchen counter, smiling as you watch her adjust the blankets surrounding her hybrid. You appreciated that she treated him as though he was no different than she was and did whatever she could to make him happy. When she walks back into the room, Mrs. Roe tries to hand you cash for the medicine.
“Oh, no, I don’t need that,” you say refusing the cash, “it wasn’t that much anyway.”
“Well, then at least take this,” she replies, turning away from you to pick up a freshly baked apple pie, which from previous experience, you know is to die for. “I have to thank you some way.”
“I will be more than happy to be paid back in food, you are an amazing cook and I will never turn down a meal.” You happily take the pie from her, noticing that the pan is still warm but not hot enough that you can’t hold it with your bare hands. “I really need to get going, but thank you for this.” You say as you begin to leave.
In the car
“What’s going to happen to us?” Mingi asks, clutching Yunho’s hand in a death grip.
“I don’t know, Mingi.” Hongjoong replies, staring at where you disappeared into the house.
“Whatever happens, we will be together,” Yeosang whispers, with a slight tremble of nervousness in his voice, his lisp becoming more pronounced due to his stress.
The car quiets once again as they watch you exit the house carrying something in your hands. You carefully open the door and sit down, realizing you have nowhere to put the pie with everyone in the car.
“I can hold it,” the fox hybrid whispers to you and you just smile handing him the food, saying a quiet thank you back to him.
Once you leave, it’s as quiet as it was before. You can feel the nervousness in the air and can’t think of what to do to break the tension, so you just stay quiet. It only takes 10 minutes to make it to your house, a giant home that looks as though it stretches as far as the eyes can see. As you pull in the driveway, you see Marco sitting on your front steps waiting for you.
“Welcome home,” you say to everyone, picking up all of the paperwork and files you got from the shelter, you turn to the fox and ask, “Can you carry that inside for me?”
“Yes,” he whispers.
You walk to the front steps, letting the hybrids get out at their own pace, understanding that this is probably overwhelming to them.
“Hey Marco, thanks for coming so quickly,” you say as you approach him.
“Y/n, what is so important that you had to call me on my day off,” he grunts in reply.
“I adopted 8 hybrids, they were about to be euthanized, and they are bruised from the restraints, one has other injuries, they also look pretty malnourished. I wanted you to look them over but figured it would be too stressful to suddenly show up at a doctor’s office.”
Digging through the stacks of paper you are holding you pull out their medical records and hand them to Marco to read through. As he begins reading, you turn around and see all eight hybrids standing behind you fidgeting and looking around the front yard.
“Let’s go in,” you say, sweeping your arm forward and leading them into the house. You watch as they remove their shoes and lead them to the living room. “Marco is a doctor, he’s going to give you a checkup and treat any injuries you may have. You can sit,” you motion to the couch and chairs, “I will be in the kitchen.”
“Wait!” Seonghwa yells, stopping you, “please don’t go. Please stay.”
“Ok,” you say, smiling and nodding before sitting on a chair, “I will stay here and read while you get a checkup, if at any time you are uncomfortable, you can ask to stop.”
While Marco examined them, you open the files, they were fairly sparse with very little information. The first up was Hongjoong.
Hongjoong – Squirrel hybrid
26 years old
Found wandering the streets, emaciated, angry
Personality issues, stubborn, clumsy, not good at anything – likely unadoptable
You look up and see the squirrel hybrid, he’s blonde with grey ears and tail, and he has perfect teeth from what you’ve seen so far, pillowy lips, and a sleek nose. He stood on guard watching every movement Marco made. Looking back down you flip the page to Seonghwa.
Seonghwa – Rabbit hybrid
27 years old
Found chained to a fence, starving and emaciated, abandoned by owners for refusing to participate in an insemination party, attacked everyone that tried to touch him.
Personality issues neurotically clean – likely unadoptable
Seonghwa was also a blonde with bright white ears, his hair was short with buzzed sides underneath. He had boba like eyes and high cheekbones, with a sharp nose
Yunho – Golden Retriever Hybrid
26 years old
Rescued with Mingi, both of them were neglected by their owner and starved on the regular, both also showed signs of abuse. – co-dependent, likely unadoptable
Yunho had golden ears and the gold on his tail was matted from neglect, his hair was a dark brown and he was smiling at the others, trying to cheer them up and make them feel more comfortable.
Yeosang – Doberman Hybrid
25 years old
Found chained in a junk yard with no shelter, sick with multiple broken bones, surrendered for not being able to ‘protect anything properly.’
Personality issues, too quiet, and shy – likely unadoptable
He had a mark on the side of his face, probably a birth mark that fit him well for some reason. His hair was dark reddish brown and he had delicate features.
San – Black Jaguar hybrid
25 years old
Returned three times, the first he complained about his owner not leaving him and Wooyoung alone and trying to touch them inappropriately without their permission, the second he was adopted alone and returned because he was too clingy and the owners wanted a guard hybrid, the third time he was returned by a hybrid fighting ring for refusing to fight the other hybrids. His personality is defective and he will be euthanized.
Personality issues, too clingy, scared of everything – unadoptable
San had cat like eyes that fit the hybrid that he was, and jet black hair. He was muscular, well built, which you wondered if it was from his hybrid genetics or hard work, or a mix of both.
Mingi – Chick hybrid
25 years old
Personality issues, clumsy, scared of his own shadow, co-dependent, - likely unadoptable
Mingi had eyes that made him look like an emoji, eyes that were wide and filled with almost a childlike fear. His hair was black, and he looked to be 6 feet tall.
Wooyoung – Fox hybrid
25 years old
Surrendered with San, shelter employees were told by San that the owner tried to touch them inappropriately multiple times.
Personality issues, too loud, clingy, and rambunctious. Talks back too much, owners will not like him – likely unadoptable
He had reddish orange hair with shaggy bangs, a prominent nose, and mischievous face, though also a face that looked sweet.
Jongho – Bear hybrid
24 years old
Origins unknown, was found passed out at the front of the shelter
Personality issues, standoffish, can be aggressive, becomes lazy in winter during typical bear hibernation time – likely unadoptable
He had dark brown hair, a cute round face, and small nose
“All done,” Marco said removing his glove and putting it in the garbage bag you gave him earlier. “We can talk outside about the results now, or you could wait until the blood tests come back.”
“I’d like to know now if everyone is ok with you telling me,” you reply to Marco before turning to the hybrids, “knowing if anything is wrong will let me know what treatments you may need.”
“It’s ok, you can know,” Hongjoong whispers for the first time to you, while the others nod.
“Right, so,” Marco starts, looking at his notes to make sure he repeats everything correctly, “Everyone is malnourished and needs more food, all also have bruises and small cuts. The only ones that have major issues are Hongjoong and San, who have bruises and contusions, possible fractured ribs. San also has a swollen knee, I think it is a soft tissue injury, just keep an eye on it for now, here are some pain meds, and if his knee is too overworked, it could give out, maybe get a brace. Then there is Seonghwa who has eczema, potentially stress induced, it’s hard to tell right now, we will have to check up later. Best treatment now would be a corticosteroid ointment or we have pills, and injectable meds. Finally, there’s Yeosang, he has a lisp and hand tremor, these could be benign or they could be something more, again, could be stress induced, just keep an eye on it and let me know if it gets worse. Now, what kind of meds do you want for Seonghwa?”
You watched the hybrids closely as the doctor mentioned each issue. They all flinched and curled in on themselves as if ashamed of the issues.
“Seonghwa,” you say getting the rabbits attention, watching him jump at the mention of his name, “what kind of treatment would you like to try?”
“I…I don’t…what?” He asks, looking at the others for help.
“This is your body, your health, you get to choose what type of treatment you would like to have, and if it works great, if it doesn’t we will move on to the next.”
“Um…oin…ointment please.”
“Ok, then we will start with that,” You confirm, looking at Marco, who nods in response.
“I will have it delivered tomorrow and let you know when the results come in,” he says, standing and walking to the door, bidding you goodbye before leaving.
You shut the door and wait in front of it, taking a deep breath before turning and walking to your hybrids.
“So…how about I show you where you will be staying?” You ask, watching them carefully. They all fidget, and Jongho slowly nods yes. “Perfect, follow me.” You say, leading them through the house, to the kitchen, “here is the kitchen, help yourself to any and all food that you want. Outside the kitchen, beyond the patio is a pool, if you’d like to swim, and this way is where your rooms are.” You say as you lead them to the steps, San following you the closest out of everyone, when his knee seemingly gives out and he falls, you were lucky that you watched him so closely because you were able to catch him before he fell. “It’s ok,” you say softly as you drag him to the step for him to sit on while he grips his knee and whimpers in pain. “I have your pain meds. Once we get you to your room, I’ll give them to you, then get you food, ok?” You ask, earning a small nod and whimper. You turn to the rest of the boys and ask, “Can one of you get an ice pack from the freezer and another help me carry him up the stairs?”
Yeosang races off to the kitchen while both Yunho and Mingi step forward to help carry San up the stairs. You walk behind them with your arms out, ready to brace them if they begin to fall, knowing that you will be going down with them if they fall. Once you reach the top of the stairs, Yeosang comes sprinting up the stairs with an icepack, and you usher everyone to the room across from the stairs.
“You can stay in this room,” you say, directing San to a bed, lifting his leg, and propping it up on a pillow before getting a towel to roll the ice pack in, then placing it over his knee. “I am in the room across the hall, diagonal to this. All of you can have your own room, and you get to choose any room you want. San, you don’t have to stay in this room if you don’t want to, you can look at the others, I just ask that you wait a day for your knee to recover before you start looking.” You pull out a pill and put it in his hand before getting a glass of water from the bathroom. “All of you are welcome to bathe, in hot water, if you’d like, and I will try to get some clean clothes for you. Tomorrow, or later, we can go clothes shopping and get you your necessary supplies. I’ll go get you some rice, then cook everyone dinner, ok.”
You stand and walk to the door before turning around.
“I would like all of you to choose your own room, everyone deserves to have their own space. However, if you want to sleepover in someone else’s room, that is fine with me, I don’t care, this is your home as well, and I want all of you to be comfortable, I will be making bulgogi, broccoli, and rice tonight.” With that you walk out and go to the kitchen to cook.
Hybrids
Once you walked out of the room, the hybrids turned to each other, Wooyoung scrambling onto the bed to cuddle with San, while the others sit down around him, Seonghwa crawling to San’s other side.
“She seems nice,” Seonghwa whispers, breaking the silence.
“What if she’s just acting that way and will do something later,” Mingi also whispers, while tugging on his hair, close to having a panic attack.
“Then we’ll deal with that later,” San replies, beginning to fade away, the stress, and pain meds making him tired. “We aren’t dead, she saved us, I’m scared, but I also, don’t want to ruin a potentially good thing.”
Before anyone can respond a knock comes from the door, the hybrids just stare but it doesn’t open, finally Yunho speaks up.
“Co-come in,” he says, trying to steady his voice.
The door opens and what looks like a chair and pile of clothes with legs walks in, setting everything down in the living room.
“Ok, so here are some clothes from my closet, Mingi and Yunho, I have oversized shirts that should fit, but my pants will be capris on you. Each bathroom has shampoo, conditioner, soaps, and towels, as well as toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, and hair brushes. San, here is a chair that can be set in your shower so you don’t have to stand on that leg. Also, there are scrubbies for your body in each bathroom. Oh, about dinner, I don’t have regular beef for the bulgogi, so it will be ground beef bulgogi and should be ready in about 45 minutes. So, why don’t you clean up and I can bring it up here, or we can work to carry San downstairs, I should have some crutches around here somewhere.” As you begin to leave, you stop again and turn back to them, “My name is Y/N, I adopted you, and I’m sure you don’t trust me yet, seeing what was about to happen and reading your files, I can only begin to imagine why you wouldn’t trust me. However, you are safe here, I will never knowingly hurt you, I swear I will protect you, and I hope, that one day, you will come to understand that I truly mean that…Ok, I will get going.”
With that, you walk out, leaving the clothes and everything in their room and hybrids stunned in silence behind you.
“Let’s, uh, let’s clean up,” Hongjoong says, standing and looking through the clothes on the chair, giving the biggest ones to Yunho and Mingi, while the others look through what’s on the pile. Suddenly, Seonghwa gasps as he reaches for a shirt, snatching it quickly and pulling something from the back of it, which seems to be stuck by static.
“Do you think she’d let me wear this?” He asks, holding up a feminine shirt, hope glimmering in his eyes with excitement at the prospect.
“Yes,” Jongho states, watching the elder hybrid. “I…I don’t trust her fully, that will…take time. But I believed her when she said she wouldn’t hurt us…I…believe her.” He finishes, blushing as everyone stares at him, knowing the bear hybrid is least likely to believe or trust anyone. “I’m going to go find a room and shower.” He yells as he runs out of the room, face bright red.
“I will set the chair in the shower,” Seonghwa says, as he smiles, watching where the bear ran out of the room. He jumps up and takes the chair, placing it in a giant shower stall before looking around and playing with the dual showerheads. Walking back into the room, he clears his throat. “I’m not shy, I know some of you are, but I don’t feel comfortable leaving San alone to shower. The shower can fit all of us and has two showerheads.” He begins before turning to San, “I would like to help you, I don’t even have to face you, I just need to know that you won’t fall, that you will be ok, th-“
“Seonghwa,” Hongjoong interrupts.
“No, he’s my baby, they are all my responsibility and I failed each of them now San is hurt and I can’t let him be alone,” Seonghwa says almost panicking.
“Hyung,” San begins to say.
“What if you fall, whatifyouslipandbreakthroughtheglassandbleedoutinthebathroom, what if-“
“HYUNG,” Yeosang yells holding Seonghwa’s face in his hands as he tries to calm the older down.
“I should have protected all of you, I’m the oldest,” Seonghwa cries out, falling to his knees, hugging himself.
“You did protect us, remember how you sacrificed yourself last night to save Joongie?” Yeosang asks, rocking Seonghwa side to side, “You saved us, you always saved us.”
“You can help me hyung,” San says, “I’m really tired and don’t want to be alone, I would be happy if you help me.”
Seonghwa looks over at San and nods, drying his eyes as he sniffles and tries to compose himself. Before he can say anything, there is a knock on the door, the hybrids saying come in at the same time. You pop your head in seeing Seonghwa and Yeosang on the floor and more than one hybrid crying.
“Is everything ok?” You ask watching their reactions.
“Yes,” Yunho replies, “we were just talking.”
“Ok…if you need anything just ask,” You say, nodding as you shut the door again, “oh, I brought San my old crutches to help with his knee…I’ll just…put them here.”
You place the crutches down then walk out again, not wanting to push the hybrids into talking or making them uncomfortable.
After a few moments, each hybrid stands up, taking their clothes to the shower to clean up, while Seonghwa helps a sleepy San into his shower, standing behind him with his back turned, while both relish the feeling of hot water and soap to scrub their bodies. Feeling the grime and oil come out of their hair as they clean. What feels like hours, but is really only 15 minutes, both hybrids are drying off and applying lotion to their skin before brushing their teeth and getting dressed, after a half an hour, they enter San’s bedroom to find 8 dinner trays, with complete meals covered in the room, all with names on each tray. San hobbles over to one chair and tray and lifts the lid, salivating at the smell of food, looking at Seonghwa with pleading eyes, begging to let him start eating. Seonghwa chuckles and nods, watching San devour his food, like he’s never eaten before. Soon, the others come trickle in, their stomachs growling as each goes to their trays. All of them notice that each tray has appropriate food based on their animal needs, San has the most protein, while Seonghwa has the most veggies. Meanwhile, Jongho and Hongjoong have a large side of berries and nuts.
Once everyone finishes, they are unable to keep their eyes open, all crawling into San’s bed and configuring themselves to all fit together in the king sized bed, passing out as soon as their eyes shut.
You waited two hours before heading upstairs, you knock quietly on the door, and open it after no answer, seeing all the hybrids asleep in the room makes you smile as you take multiple trips removing their food trays. Once the trays were cleaned and put away, you head to bed, exhaling as your head hits the pillow and you your eyes shut within seconds.
A few hours later, your eyes snap open, the feeling of being watched creeping over you. As fast as you can you jump up and spin around, seeing San standing there on his crutches, looking like he doesn’t know if he should run or stay.
“San,” you ask, rubbing your eyes, relaxing your posture, “is everything ok?”
“Um…yes,” he replies, “I…um…can I…may I…can I sleep with you tonight?” he quickly says, shutting his eyes so he doesn’t have to see your face.
“Of course,” you state, moving over and patting the bed next to you, watching as he stares in awe then hobbles over to share your sleep space.
He snuggles in carefully, a smile on his face, before he falls back asleep. You watch him for a minute then drift off as well. Maybe 8 hybrids won’t be so bad.

Chapter Text
You blink groggily before fully opening your eyes, turning your head, you see the sleeping panther before you, sound asleep, slightly snoring. Letting out a small yawn, you slowly slip from your bed before heading to the bathroom to shower, loving the feel of hot water wash over you as you avoid thinking of all of the things that you will need to do today. Once you’re cleaned and dressed you take enough clothes out for all the hybrids and place them on your chair, then head downstairs, walking as quietly as possible, making sure you don’t wake any of the hybrids that are sleeping, knowing that they have sensitive hearing. You make yourself breakfast and make sure you have enough food for the hybrids whenever they decide to wake up. Sitting on the couch you go through emails, do some online shopping for hybrid stuff, and then look at hybrid and hybrid friendly stores in the area that have things they may like. You also buy each hybrid collars that look like necklaces, multiple different styles, in eight of every color they have, so that your hybrids have a choice of what they want, knowing there is no way around them having to wear collars. Once you’re done, you find yourself yawning and decide to lay down on the couch for a nap, dozing off immediately.
You don’t know how long you were asleep, but you wake up to the sound of shattering glass and panicked yelling. Opening your eyes, you see a panicked squirrel in front of you, gripping his hair as he keeps yelling over other voices. You sit up quickly and look around, everyone is panicked, and Seonghwa is on his hands and knees picking up pieces of broken glass. Finally waking up enough to understand something is wrong, you let out a loud piercing whistle, silencing everyone and causing them to freeze in their spots.
“Seonghwa, freeze,” you say, causing the bunny to stop what he was doing body going stiff as a board. “I will clean that up, I don’t want you to cut yourself.” You turn to Hongjoong, “What were you yelling about?”
Hongjoong looks at you, blinks a few times, and then yells “Where is San? What did you do with him?”
“He’s sleeping in my room,” you say calmly, understanding their panic now, “He showed up in the middle of the night and asked if he could sleep in there. Why don’t you all go wake him up and I will find something for breakfast.”
All the hybrids rush upstairs, Seonghwa looking slightly conflicted about leaving a mess, but decides to follow, leaving you to hoist yourself off the couch and start cleaning.
Hybrids
They all run upstairs as fast as they can, bursting through Y/N’s bedroom door and finding San sprawled across the bed sound asleep, dead to the world. The hybrids freeze at the sight of their friend, not knowing the panic he caused everyone by disappearing.
“SAN!” Yeosang yells, startling everyone and causing San to shoot up out of the bed, looking around wildly before seeing his friends. He immediately sits back on the bed and rubs the sleep form his eyes.
“Good morning,” San says with a gravelly voice.
“What the hell?” Wooyoung yells as he climbs onto the bed with San. “We woke up and you were gone, do you know how scared we were?”
“What’d you mean?” San asks, still not awake, but watching as all the other hybrids crawl onto your bed.
“We woke up and you were gone,” Yunho says, “We thought something bad happened to you, that you were taken away or something.”
San looks down at his hands blushing and looking guilty about worrying his friends.
“I’m sorry,” he says, “I just…I don’t know, Y/n was so nice that I hoped they’d let me cuddle them, so…I asked if I could and they said yes. I just…I want an owner who won’t push me away, try to hurt me, and will cuddle when I want, and I was so excited that I may have found someone.”
Seonghwa quickly covers Hongjoong’s mouth so he can’t say anything to hurt San and begins to speak.
“It’s fine, and I hope that Y/n is like that as well, but we need to find a way to leave a message for the others so we don’t panic next time.” Seonghwa finishes, lowering his hand from Hongjoong and running his fingers through San’s hair.
“Did anything happen while you were in here?” Hongjoong asks, eyes examining San for anything out of place.
“No, Y/n woke up, I startled her, then she moved over and let me climb under the covers, and we went to sleep. Y/n didn’t touch me or anything, though I kind of wished she would have hugged me.” San replies, slightly pouting.
“I’m sure she needs time to get used to us as well,” Jongho mentions while picking at the blanket, blushing when everyone looks at him. “It looked like she lived alone before us, she is probably adjusting the same as we are.”
“I agree with Jongho,” comes a muffled voice, causing everyone to look and see Mingi with his face buried in your pillow, arms wrapped around it.
“Mingi, give me that,” Wooyoung says, tugging at the pillow, trying to remove it from Mingi.
“No, you just want to steal it.”
“Do not, now give it.”
“NO!”
“BOYS!” Seonghwa yells, getting both their attention, “put the pillow down, it isn’t ours, so don’t ruin it.”
Mingi pouts as he puts it down, but quickly lays on it so no one else can take it, causing Wooyoung to pout and then wrap his arms around San.
“You smell like her,” Wooyoung says, burying his face in Sans neck and taking a deep breath, while San just moves his head to the side, letting Wooyoung inhale your mixed scents and then mark San to add his.
“Her scent calms me,” comes the small and tired voice of Yeosang, who is barely able to keep his eyes open as he lays across the foot of the bed, Yunho reaching down to run his fingers through Yeosang’s hair. “I’m tired again.”
Before anyone else can say anything, you knock on the door, earning multiple ‘come in’ replies. When you enter your room, you see all the hybrids laying on your bed, San half asleep while Wooyoung rubs his face in San’s neck, Mingi and Yeosang looking like they were out, Yunho playing with Yeosang’s hair, Jongho sitting in the middle of the bed, and Seonghwa and Hongjoong sitting on the side closest to you but also near San.
“How are you all doing,” you ask, earning multiple replies of good or tired. “I wanted to know what you wanted to do today. You can relax here, or I can take you out shopping to get you clothes, toys, whatever you want. I’ll take you shopping at some point anyways, but thought you may want your own clothes sooner rather than later. You can talk amongst yourselves, there are clothes for you on the chair here, and I will go down and make breakfast. I have waffles, pancakes, eggs, and bacon, as well as fruits and veggies, oh, and oatmeal…I’ll just make some of everything and you can pick.”
With that, you turn and leave the room, heading down to cook the breakfast, while Seonghwa looks over the clothes you laid out for everyone, letting everyone take what they want.
“Let’s get cleaned up then head down, we should go shopping today,” Seonghwa says, silencing Hongjoong with a look.
He knew Hongjoong and Yunho were a bit standoffish with you, not wanting to trust you just yet, but Yunho hid it better than Joong. The one that surprised him was Jongho. Seonghwa expected Jongho to be distant, but instead, Jongho tried to convince everyone to trust you. It made Seonghwa smile and worry at the same time. He understood that the maknae longed for a family, no matter how hard he tried not to show it, and you saving everyone sparked hope in him that he probably didn’t even know he had. It filled Seonghwa with good feelings, knowing that everyone would experience that, but then anxiety, that another shoe may drop at some point and break the reality they thought they had found. However, for now, Seonghwa chose to trust you and enjoy their time of comfort. As the hybrids left to clean up, San walking considerably better than the night before, Wooyoung immediately walked to join you in the kitchen.
As you mix the batter for the waffles and heat up the iron, you heard quiet footsteps behind you. Turning around, you spot Wooyoung shuffling nervously as he watches you cook.
“Do you know how to cook?” You ask Wooyoung, earning a nod from him. “Do you like to cook?” He nods vigorously at that, while looking at everything you have going on. “Would you like to help?”
“Yes, please,” he says, surging forward washing his hands before jumping in.
“Well, I’m making eggs, pancakes, waffles, and the bacon is already cooking, so grab something you want to do and jump in.”
Wooyoung immediately takes over, pushing you out of the way and cooking up a storm. You sit back and begin cutting fruit, watching him as he jumps from one thing to another like a pro, making you think he’d do great in a restaurant.
“Where did you learn to cook, if you don’t mind me asking?” You question the fox as he mixes the eggs.
“My first home, with San, they got me cooking lessons so they wouldn’t have to cook. I loved it, after everything I had been through, throughout the day, I could escape with my cooking, and the look on their faces when they ate what I made…it made me feel good,” he explains to you, “I was also able to steal food for Sannie to eat, that made me feel good too.”
“Well, you don’t always have to cook if you don’t want to, however, you will have free reign of the kitchen and the food to do with as you want.”
Wooyoung looks back at you with excitement in his eyes at the prospect of being able to do what he wants.
“You really mean that?” He asks.
“Of course, this is your home too now, I want you to be comfortable.”
While waiting for the others, you and Wooyoung continue talking and you learn that he has always wanted to ride a bike, but was never allowed too, and that meant that you had to buy him a bicycle. He likes shoes and is interested in redesigning them, so you plan on giving him a little studio, and he always wanted to dance, falling in love with the movements he’d see on TV when he could catch glimpses of it. Turns out all the hybrids like to dance, which makes you wonder if you can find a dance teacher that will teach hybrids.
By the time Wooyoung finishes cooking, and you plate the food for everyone and set the table, all the other hybrids arrive in the dining room, sitting down when you gesture for them to. They all immediately dig in, some moaning at the taste and you sit with them, taking a little bit of everything for your lunch and loving how it tasted.
“Um,” Seonghwa says, interrupting the quiet while eating, “can…c-can we go shopping today?”
“Sure,” you reply, popping another blueberry in your mouth. “Once you finish eating and Wooyoung has a chance to shower we will head out. We’ll be buying clothes, phones, computers, and things for you all to try for hobbies, so expect to be out for a long time.”
Your hybrids talk excitedly amongst each other while you look through emails in your phone, and write down lists of things they mention that they may want to try. Wooyoung scarfed his food down so fast you thought he’d choke, before running upstairs and taking what you think was the fastest shower ever. While he was upstairs getting ready, you noticed Yeosang messing with his long hair that kept falling into his eyes.
“Yeosang,” you asked, approaching him slowly so you didn’t startle him, “do you want a haircut so your hair isn’t in your eyes?”
“N-no, I-I like my hair long,” he replied slightly stuttering and blushing.
“Would you like me to put it up in a ponytail for you?”
“Y-yes, that’d be nice.”
You have him sit on a chair and dig out a brush and ponytail holder before standing behind him and brushing his hair back, earning a content sigh from the man, before you finish putting his hair up. You’re stunned once you look at his face with his hair pulled back, he’s gorgeous. You thought this when you first looked at him, but you’re really realizing it now, and his birthmark makes him stand out even more.
“All done,” you pat his shoulders and let him stand, he nervously thanks you and goes to join the other hybrids waiting for Wooyoung.
You can hear laughing and excited talking followed by a whiney whimper and pop your head in the living room, hearing the other hybrids teasing Yeosang for how pretty he looks. Before anyone can say anything else, Wooyoung comes bounding down the stairs excitedly ushering everyone to the car.
Once you arrive at the shopping center, you begin walking around the stores, letting your hybrids decide where they want to go first, and Seonghwa immediately ran towards a lego store. Everyone followed him in, but only San seemed mildly interested in only the things Seonghwa was picking out. You let him choose six sets, promising more if he actually enjoyed building them, then paying the store extra to have the sets delivered to your house later that day. The next store was a sporting goods store, Yeosang was drawn to multiple skateboards, and some of the boys looked excitedly at baseball equipment and soccer gear, which you let everyone choose what they want, then had things shipped. Wooyoung immediately went to the bikes, and you asked an associate to help him choose one for a beginner. While Yeosang picked out his skateboard, you purchased mini ramps to set up, fully planning to build a mini skate park in the yard if he enjoyed riding it.
After the sports store, you stopped by the electronics store to grab everyone phones and laptops. You let them choose what they wanted and then when you found out that a few of them were interested in gaming, you bought each a specialty gaming computer and set up, as well as gaming consoles to spoil them, even going so far as to buy them their own monster flat screen tvs for their rooms. Once you finished with the skin care and make up stores, which each hybrid seemed to be especially interested in skin care, you went to lunch, happy to eat after hours of shopping. Each hybrid had gotten a hobby to try and you made the executive decision that after lunch would be shoes and clothes, then you’d go home for the day, absolutely exhausted and ready to hibernate. You learned Hongjoong liked the idea of reforming clothes, so you let him buy some things, Jongho like soccer, pool, and racing games, Yunho liked video games, San like plushies and working out, and Mingi enjoyed pool and video games, so you bought a pool table.
Shopping for clothes with 8 hybrids is an…experience. They all have different tastes and ran off like kids in a candy store, leaving you to chase after them. You wander around the store making sure to see where all the hybrids go. You noticed Seonghwa and Yeosang looking through the women’s section of clothes and slowly meander over to them, freezing and watching carefully as 2 women approach, ready to jump in if needed.
“Men’s clothes are on the other side of the store,” one woman says, trying to sound pleasant, but you can hear the sneering condescension in her voice and it pisses you off.
“These are women’s clothes, they are not meant to be touched by you unless you’re folding them.” The other woman laughs. “Althoug-“
“Is something wrong?” You interrupt, placing yourself between your two hybrids and the women.
“No ma’am, we are just helping these two with where things are in the store. May I help you?” The first woman replies, while the second woman keeps eyeing your two hybrids.
“These are my hybrids.” You say firmly looking directly at the second woman and watching her flinch under your gaze, before looking back to the first. “They already know where things are and are enjoying looking at these clothes. I think they are fine and you can be on your way.”
“Uh-I-But ma’am, these are women’s clothes.”
“Do you two like these clothes?” You ask, turning to look at your hybrids. They glance towards the two women. “Don’t look at them, look at me.” They look back to you. “Do you like these clothes?” They both slowly nod, Yeosang blushing under everyone's gaze as Seonghwa grips his hand. “Then feel free to look at whatever you want and buy what you want. There is no judgement. And if anyone tries to stop you, come get me and I will deal with it, ok?”
Both hybrids nod, a smile breaking out on their face, as the two women shift side to side on their feet. You reach out to the rack next to you and pull out two items, a semi-sheer top that you hold in front of Yeosang and a black top with a corseted waist that you hold in front of Seonghwa.
“I will say, I think you both will look fantastic in these.” Seonghwa takes the top excitedly, holding it in front of the mirror, while Yeosang examines the top you gave him. You turn back to the women, “thank you, but your help is no longer needed. You can go now.” You look back at the your two hybrids who begin shopping once again and ask “If you two are good, I’m going to check on the others, I brought you each a cart to fill up, you can grab another if you need, don’t forget to look at the rest of the store.”
They excitedly nod along with you, not paying attention as they look at clothes, Seonghwa more interested in the women’s clothes than Yeosang, but Yeosang still finding a few items.
Exhausted, you collapse on a bench near the changing rooms, and every few minutes one of your hybrids appears to ask if they can try something on, which you tell them yes and then they come to model clothes, all except Hongjoong who keeps what he picked to himself. After a while San collapses near you, a cart full of clothes as shoes and pure exhaustion written on his face, plus something more. You recognize the same thing in him that you have, his social battery is dead and he wants to go home. Gently, you reach over and pull his head towards you until he rests it on your shoulder, closing his eyes and relaxing. It took two more hours before everyone found clothes they liked. You gather them up and tell them to take their clothes to the register, Yunho grabbing Yeosang’s cart and walking away when you stop him.
“Where is Yeosang?” You ask.
“He said he was going to the bathroom,” Yunho answers, looking at you. You nod and tell him you will go check on him after asking him to have the cashiers begin ringing everything up, then walk away to the bathrooms.
You stop someone who just walked out of the bathroom and ask if anyone was in there and they said no, making you think that you probably missed him and he went to the registers, however, when you got there he still wasn’t in sight. Worriedly you walk to the dressing rooms, a bad feeling sinking in your stomach, and panic setting in as you hear whimpering, knowing exactly who it was coming from.

Yeosang
Everyone was done with shopping and Yeosang had to run to the bathroom. Asking Yunho to take his cart, he ran as fast as he could to the bathroom, then finished, and went on his way to meet all of you at the registers, when he saw a shirt that he really liked. He stood there thinking before grabbing it and running to the changing room, hoping you wouldn’t be mad that he was delaying you a few more minutes.
He never thought this quick detour would have caused him to be in this position, but here he is, silently begging for someone to help him as he is pinned, shirtless, to the wall of the dressing room. He thought it may have been one of the others coming to get him and opened the door, only for a man to push his way in, and pin him to the wall, hand over Yeosang’s mouth to keep him quiet.
“I saw you earlier, looking at dresses with your friend,” the man says, head leaning against Yeosang’s, as he runs his hand up Yeosang’s side. “What do you think about stripping down and putting on some sexy lingerie for me? I could make it worth your while.” His hand keeps getting closer to Yeosang’s pelvis, causing Yeosang to let out a scared and panicked whimper.
The man opens his mouth once more to speak but is suddenly tackled into the mirror, releasing Yeosang, who drops to the ground. As soon as Yeosang sees you, he grabs his shirt and the one he liked and crawls behind you, getting dressed and trying to hide. You look at how scared Yeosang is and then look back to the man on the ground, moaning and groaning out obscenities at you, and all you can think of is what could have happened if you were late or ignored your instincts. You help Yeosang up, then turn to the man on the ground and stomp on his crotch as hard as you can, earning a yell before pulling Yeosang out of the store.
Yeosang is quiet as you approach the register, the other hybrids holding all their bags, as the cashier rings up the last item. You take Yeosangs shirt and hand it to her and then pull your card out to pay, while the other hybrids detect something is wrong and pull Yeosang to them, asking what happened and earning a head-shake from him, since he doesn’t want to talk about it. When you get the receipt, you take Yeosangs hand again, inform everyone you are leaving and walking them to the car.
After loading everything up, you turn and pull Yeosang into your arms, apologizing for not being there to protect him. This seemingly breaks him as he grips you tightly and begins to sob and you just hold him, letting him cry out for as long as he needs. It doesn’t take long for the others to make it a group hug, unaware of what happened, but knowing that Yeosang needed comfort. It took a while but after Yeosang stop crying, the group breaks up.
“I’m sorry,” you say, wiping the tears from his eyes, “I should have been there to protect you but I wasn’t.”
“No,” Yeosang replies, shaking his head, “You saved me just in time…and got revenge, don’t apologize.” He hugs you again and pulls away and you have everyone load up in the car.
On the way home, Yeosang explains to everyone what happened and you get angry for him all over again. After the mood begins to somber, Yeosang begins joking around trying to get everyone happy again, especially since he is ok. It works to a degree, but you still think it may be wise to get all of them set up with a therapist, knowing they've been through a lot and probably need help with it.
As you pull into your driveway, you see a cop car sitting there and two police officers standing by your door. Internally groaning, you expect them to be here because of the man at the store.
“Nobody worry about this, I will take care of it,” you say, getting out of the car and helping your hybrids unload their things as the two officer’s approach. “What can I do for you, Danny?” You ask the one officer that you used to know form the job.
“You’re not in trouble,” Danny says, then gestures to your house, “But can we talk inside with your hybrids?”

Chapter Text
“We don’t need your hybrids, we just need you,” Officer Miller says, a miserable man that you hated working with while on the job. For the most part, he did his job fine, but he was narcissistic and looked down on hybrids, not someone you wanted around you.
“They will be there for whatever you have to say,” you reply, turning to your hybrids, “Can you carry your bags in please?” you smile and walk away, the hybrids following with their things, while you carry a few bags yourself. Unlocking the door, you point at the boxes next to it, “Officers, please bring those in with you?”
Danny nods and happily picks up the package, while Miller lets out a small string of cusses, making you smile. You have them leave the boxes in the living room while you have your hybrids leave their bags by the stairs and ask them to gather in the living room with you. Once everyone is seated, you turn to face the officers.
“What do you want?” You ask, giving a small smile to Danny, who seems nervous, letting you know it’s a big favor, and frowning at Miller who sneers right back at you.
“We need your help,” Danny starts, leaning forward in his seat, “We don’t feel comfortable sending a civilian into a place like this, but you are a former detective, so we feel much better about it. There is a hybrid slave auction and party coming up, these events are…horrible. Hybrids are tortured for entertainment, burned alive while people bet on how long they can hold their screams or succumb to the flames, th-” He stops talking when you hold your hand up and shake your head, noticing how your hybrids began to tremble at the mention of the auction. “They also have sex parties, everyone gets a turn with any hybrid they want, do-doing anything they want to them…sexually. You can even bring your own hybrids with you, understanding that they are also free game to everyone there, including staff. We were hoping you’d attend. We need to know who is there, what kind of armed guards, and we need to time it before they start killing the hybrids…”
He trails off and you know he’s going to suggest something you won’t like, something not even he likes, judging by the look of disgust on his face as he tries to get the next words out, but Miller says it for him, happily.
“We want you to take the rabbit with you.” Miller announces smugly, staring at Seonghwa with a devious grin. You are so angry you can’t even speak, but look over at Seonghwa and see him turning grey while the others go white with fear. “Rabbits are highly coveted, with everyone busy with him, you can go about your business. I’m sure they’d love a piece o-”
“GET OUT!” You roar standing to your feet quickly, shaking with anger as you try your damnedest not to punch that bastard in the mouth. “GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY HOUSE YOU DISGUSTING PIECE OF SHIT, AND I SWEAR TO WHATEVER GOD YOU BELIEVE IN, IF I EVER SEE YOU LOOKING AT MY HYBRIDS AGAIN, I WILL FUCKING KILL YOU!”
“What did you say you bi-“
“Outside now Miller!” Danny demands getting between you two, “If you don’t leave now I will report you, do you understand?”
Miller snorts and storms out of your house, cursing the whole way, while Danny sighs and shakes his head before gathering his things to leave, but he turns back to you.
“You don’t have to take any of your hybrids, lord knows I never would, but please consider going for us, if not to help us, to help those hybrids that will be there.” With that last comment, Danny nods at you and leaves your house.
You stand there fuming as you hear their car start and drive away through the open window. Taking a few breaths, you turn to look at your hybrids and see the fear on all of their faces, Seonghwa looking like he’s going to be sick or stop breathing.
“Seonghwa,” you say, crouching in front of him and slowly reaching out to hold his hands in yours. He looks at you in the eyes, terrified, body trembling, breathing erratic, on the verge of tears. “Seonghwa, I promise, so long as I am alive and I am able to fight, I will never allow anything like that to happen to you, or any of the others. I will protect you. I won’t even entertain the thought of bringing you near a place like that or letting someone touch you. You will be safe here.”
“Do you p-pr-promise?” Seonghwa stutters.
“I promise, on my life, I will give up everything to keep all of you safe!”
With that, Seonghwa throws himself on you, tackling you to the ground while he sobs, his whole body shaking with each cry that leaves his mouth, and all you can do is hug him as tight as you can and rub his back. You glance over at the others and see San and Wooyoung’s bodies looking like loaded springs. As soon as you let your arm fall away, they both pounce on you and Seonghwa, wrapping themselves around you sobbing as well, the rest not taking long to follow. You spent an hour on the floor under the pile of bodies. You didn’t know if Seonghwa cried himself to sleep or passed out from everyone on top of him, but when they moved off of you, he began to stir. However, you didn’t miss Hongjoong lunge off of the pile as fast as he could, Yunho following quickly after, though slightly hesitant. When everyone sits up, Mingi opens and closes his mouth a few times, trying to say something that he just can’t get out.
“You never got us collars.” Mingi says, playing with his fingers. “You say we’re yours, but you didn’t get us collars to let everyone know that we are, even at the stores, you didn’t show us any. How can we believe you?”
“Hold that thought,” you reply, jumping up and running to the boxes the officers brought in, pushing them to the living room since you didn’t want to make multiple trips. Once you get there, you stand next to the stack of boxes taller than you and smile at your hybrids. “These are collars for you. I got ones that looked comfortable and not like those stiff painful leather ones you see online. I got 8 of every color in every style I thought you may like, so you can change them up. If you don’t like any, we can look for more styles for you as well.”
Each hybrid stays frozen you speak and lay all the boxes out in front of them, carefully, you open each box and spill the contents on the table and floor in front of them as they watch in amazement of the sheer number of collars being unpacked. San was the first to make a move and picked up a small package containing a purple velvet collar with a deep purple amethyst stone in the middle. With trembling hands he smooths the collar out it his hand then raises it to clasp it around his neck, then jumps up to look in the mirror, marveling at how it looks.
“It’s so soft,” he whispers as he glides his hand across it, “I’ve only been given big thick collars that made it hard to move, or collars with spikes facing inward.”
You have no idea what to say, so you just sit there watching as he marvels the look of something so delicate on his neck. One by one each hybrid takes a collar, looking them over before keeping it on their lap, or trading it for a different one. You notice that Seonghwa likes the shiny silvery looking ones, especially the ones that are very delicate, while Wooyoung is keeping the black ones that he finds, seemingly waring with himself over which he was going to wear first. Mingi liked the grey colors, he avoided the shiny versions that Seonghwa liked, but also grabbed a few blue. Yunho seemed to favor the blue, he didn’t really seem interested in any particular style, but really paid more attention to the colors. Both Yeosang and Jongho seemed to like the reds and blacks, Jongho went more for the looser collars that were less noticeable, and Yeosang seemed to like everything, choosing to put on what seemed like a tighter black collar before jumping up and heading to the mirror with San. It didn’t escape your attention that he brought a few more purple collars with him for San to try on as well. Hongjoong seemed so focused on the collars he was looking at, taking one of every single style and color and holding it up to examine them carefully before placing them in his keep pile. Judging by the amount of clothes he purchased, you were almost certain he was already planning outfits for each collar he grabbed.
“I want to let you all know, that you are free to look for other collars you may like on your own, in case you come across some that you want.” You say, earning distracted nods from everyone in the room. “I was thinking of ordering out tonight, what would you want?”
“No cooking?” Wooyoung asked, his head whipping in your direction as soon as you finished speaking, looking somewhat upset.
“I enjoyed your cooking this morning, but we’ve all had a very long, stressful day, and are going to be getting tons of deliveries later today. And you each have to choose your permanent rooms so when things arrive we can set everything up, plus unpack your clothes, plus maybe shop for cabinets and room decorations to style your rooms, and paint. It’s a busy day, I think you should take the day or more off of cooking. Also, don’t hang your clothes up, they need to be washed before you put them away, so once you choose a room, each should have a mini washer and dryer in the closet, so start washing them…Do you all know how to wash clothes or do you want me to show you?”
“We know how,” Seonghwa replied, looking at one collar, trying to make the sun catch right to really make it shine.
Wooyoung seemed to consider what you were saying, then halfheartedly agreed before picking his last collar. Everyone else seemed to have chosen theirs and sat looking at everything, trying to choose what they wanted to put on.
“Let me make this clear as well, you do NOT have to wear your collars on this property. You are free to be comfortable in your own home. The only thing that I ask is that if you go to the lake without me, you wear one there, as people often walk around and I don’t want anything to happen.” You wait until everyone nods and acknowledges what you say, then continue, “Now, go up and pick your rooms, while I get your phones and laptops set up, ok.”
They all nod and walk away, while you pull out all the electronics that need to be set up and take them to the kitchen, plugging them in, in different outlets while you turn them on and let them set themselves up and update all of their devices. Luckily you had them set up email accounts at breakfast and write down their passwords, informing them they could change the passwords as soon as everything was set up, you just needed them for initializing their devices. While everything was processing, you sat and thought of their faces as they looked at the collars, it was a mixture of happiness, awe, hope, and a small mix of fear, probably that this could disappear at any time. The ones that really surprised you was Hongjoong. Ever since the police left and you talked to Seonghwa, he looked like he was about to cry, and while he was going through the collars, you swore you saw a tear slide out, but chose to ignore it. While you hoped they would trust you, you didn’t want it to happen too soon, you wanted to prove to them that their trust would be earned and not misplaced, you didn’t want it blindly given to you.
Once the phones were set up, you programed everyone's numbers in each other’s phones, including yours, and left them to charge, while the computers finished upgrading. You knew the deliveries would be arriving soon, so you headed upstairs to figure out what all the thumping and yelling was about while you were busy. As you reached the second floor landing, you saw a light on under the door that San used and knocked on it, earning a quiet come in. Entering the room, you looked around and saw a light on in the walk in closet, heading over to it, you could hear the washer and dryer running, and when you entered, you found San arranging his shoes, collars, and jewelry in the display cases in the closet.
“You didn’t have to stay in this room, San.” You say as you watch him adjusting each collar so they look perfect.
“I wanted to. I have good memories in here,” San replies before blushing bright red and adding, “It’s also closest to your room.”
Without thinking you walk over to him and run your fingers through his hair before placing a kiss in the top of his head.
“Well, I welcome you being close,” you reply, glancing down at him and seeing him staring at you. “Oh,” you gasp, pulling your hand away, “I’m sorry, I should have asked for permission before doing anything like that.”
“NO!” He yelled grabbing your hand and placing it back on his head and purring, “You don’t have to ask for permission, please keep doing this whenever you want.”
You stand there and watch him as you gently scratch his scalp, his eyes closed and loud purrs coming from him as he seems to be in a daze. He trusts you completely and it terrifies you. Not because you think you will hurt him, but because so many possibilities are running through your head of someone trying to get close to him with bad intentions and he welcomes them.
“San?”
“Yes?” He asks, looking up at you.
“Can you use the crutches today? I noticed you were slightly limping when you came upstairs. I don’t want you to over use that leg before it heals properly.”
“Ok, I will.”
“Good,” you lean down and kiss his forehead, “I’m going to go check on the others.”
As you turn away you hear a quiet thud and turn to check, seeing San happily laying on the ground, arms splayed wide. Smiling, you leave his room and knock on the other, kitty corner to his room, only to be greeted by an angry looking Wooyoung.
“I said no-oh, hi Y/n!” Wooyoung says, perking up when he saw that it was you, peaking out in the hall, checking both ways before pulling you into his room and barricading the door shut.
“Everything okay?” You ask watching as he checks that the door can’t be opened.
“Hongjoong saw a shirt I bought and he wants it, he keeps messing with it AND a pair of my shoes. You said I could redesign them, so I was setting them up so I could figure out what I wanted to do, but he came in and took my shoe laces, then my tape, then he took MY SHOE!” Wooyoung yells. “He won’t leave me alone, he should have bought his own.”
“Are you sure he wants your stuff Wooyoung?” You ask, while laughing and looking at what’s on his bed.
“What do you mean?”
“It sounds to me like he’s just doing everything he can to mess with you.”
Wooyoung gasps as he realizes what you’re saying and then mutters ‘that brat’ under his breath before vowing revenge, and you wonder if you should have pointed that out to him.
“I’m going to need everyone to gather in the hall in a few minutes so we can figure out dinner, so maybe don’t barricade the door too much, ok.” You laugh, reaching out to pat Wooyoung’s head, but stopping right before you connect with it.
Wooyoung sees what you were trying to do and instantly shoves his head into your hand, making a purring noise like San was, though not as loud, but his eyes remained closed as well. After a few scritches to his head, you walk to the door and remove the chairs, going to the room right across the hall. Knocking on the door a happy squirrel answers it, a mischievous glint in his eyes, but his face suddenly goes blank as soon as he sees you.
“Hello,” Hongjoong says, shuffling his feet uncomfortably.
“Just checking in, making sure you are settling nicely.” You state, giving him a warm smile.
“Yes, I like the room.” He says, looking anywhere but at you.
“That’s great. If you want, you can also look up some things for your animal self to enjoy in your room. I know we didn’t pick up much of that today.”
“Thank you.”
“In a few minutes, I’m going to gather everyone to figure out dinner.”
“Okay, thank you.”
With that you nod and head to the room next to him, giving him his space so you don’t feel like you are pressuring him. Knocking on this door Seonghwa answers, and invites you in and you have to fight every urge in your body not to chuckle at the sight of him. He’s wearing a frilly pink apron, yellow rubber gloves, a face mask, and safety glasses, and as soon as you enter his room, despite the windows being opened, all you can smell is cleaning chemicals and laundry detergent.
“You’ve been busy,” you say, looking around the room to see it sparkling clean, “if you wanted it cleaned I could have done it for you.”
“I like cleaning.” Seonghwa replies blushing a bit as he finishes running a lint roller across the floor.
“How would you like me to buy you a Roomba?” You ask looking at how sparkling clean the room is.
“What’s that?” Seonghwa asks, putting the cleaning supplies away and removing his gloves, masks, and apron.
“You can open the window,” you suggest, getting a headache from the scent of the cleaners before sitting down, while Seonghwa opens the window, taking a deep breath. “A roomba is a robotic vacuum that automatically cleans your room, is could cut down the amount of cleaning you have to do.”
“Yes please!” Seonghwa says excitedly as he starts hanging some of his clothes up to dry and putting others in the dryer.
“Do you need anything?”
“No, I’m all set.” Seonghwa chirps happily as he arranges his lego sets on the dresser.
“You know,” You start, stopping yourself from patting rubbing his back, but feeling Seonghwa subtly shift into your hand, so you start to do so, “if you like building lego sets, I can buy you a big display case.”
“Really?” He asks, eyes sparkling.
“Of course, just ask. I’m going to gather everyone to decide on lunch and help with the deliveries that should be arriving, so be ready.”
Seonghwa agrees and you leave to the room across from Seonghwa and next to Wooyoung, knocking on the door you hear panicked whispers and thumping. Knocking again, there are more whispers and suddenly Mingi opens the door, face pale and sweat dripping off of him.
“Are you okay?” You ask, placing your hand on his forehead to feel for a fever, but feeling nothing but sweat. “I’m just checking on everyone, seeing how their rooms are, if they need anything.”
Mingi stares at you then bursts into tears, apologizing profusely and dropping to his knees, causing you to lower with him, absolutely shocked at what was happening and a worried Yunho running up from behind him. With Yunho’s help, you manage to get Mingi to his bed.
“What’s wrong?” You ask Mingi, kneeling in front of him, holding his hands in yours before reaching up to wipe his tears away. “What happened? Are you okay?”
“I…I ripped on of his closet doors off the frame,” Yunho says looking at the ground
“NO! NO HE DIDN’T, I DID IT, PUNISH ME! HE WAS JUST TRYING TO HELP ME FIX IT!” Mingi yells as soon as Yunho finishes talking, causing Yunho’s face to pale.
“Ok, no, shh,” You say, hugging Mingi tightly, rubbing his back, and shushing him to try and get him to calm down. “It’s okay, no one will be punished. Shit happens, it’s not a big deal, you’re fine, I promise.”
After about a minute, Mingi calms enough to look up at you.
“You mean it,” he sniffs, wiping his nose and eyes, “I won’t get into trouble.”
“I promise, it’s not a big deal, I break things all the time. Why don’t you show me what happened.”
Mingi nods and stands, holding Yunho’s hand in one hand and yours in the other, leading you to the closet door that is currently laying on the ground, hinges mangled and the wood in the frame and on the door split. It takes everything to not laugh at the absurdity of however this happened.
“What happened Mingi?”
“Well…I chose this room and was doing my laundry, when, when I noticed the door was loose, so I did my laundry then came over here and opened and shut the door a few times, but then I opened it too wide and it cracked, so then I panicked, and tried to fix it, but I pulled too hard and it came off, then I got Yunho and we tried to fix it, and I don’t know how, but the whole door came off and then you came up.” Mingi says, crushing Yunho’s hand in his grip, causing Yunho to wince.
“That’s okay,” you say picking up the door and propping it up on the wall, “I’ll call a carpenter to fix it, it’s not a problem. Just promise me one thing.”
“Yeah?” Mingi asks shyly.
“Come get me next time something breaks.”
“Okay,” he breathes out, squirming in position. All you do is open your arms and he tackles you into the wall in a hug, rubbing his face in your neck while you rub your hands up and down his back. “It’s not a big deal, you don’t have to panic about things like this.” When he separates, you look around and see that he put a few things away before chaos ensued. “How do you like your room?”
“I love it, it’s so big and the bed is so nice and soft, I’ve never laid on anything so soft.”
“Well, I’m happy you enjoy it. Once I check in with everyone, I will call you out to discuss dinner, until then think about how you want to decorate this place.”
You turn and walk away, Yunho following you, but heading to his room next to Mingi.
“Can you join me?” Yunho asks and you simply nod, following him into his.
You can hear the washer going, but realize he didn’t have much time to do anything else. You stand in the middle of the room, waiting for Yunho to make his move. You know that Yunho and Hongjoong are the most wary of you, and you want to let them take their time, not rush or pressure them into accepting you.
“Thank you,” Yunho says, walking until he’s right in front of you. “For not punishing Mingi…or me.”
“Yunho, I know you don’t trust me yet, and that’s okay, but I want you to understand me when I say this I will never hurt any of you, nor punish you.”
“Thank you,” he whispers. He stares into your eyes for a minute before nodding and the stress he carried in his shoulders seemed to give way a bit.
“Do you need anything?”
“No.”
“Then I will head to the last two. Just know, you can come to me for anything Yunho.”
With that you walk across the hall and knock on the door, not sure which of the remaining two will be left, but then being greeted by Yeosang’s shy smile.
“Hello,” you say, smiling back as Yeosang lets you inside his room.
“Hello,” he replies, before seeing something on his bed that he rushes to hide, but not before you see it.
“You know Yeosang, if you want something of mine, you can just ask.”
“I-it was the pillow you laid on downstairs,” he mutters, blushing as you watch him. “It smelled like you.”
“Okay,” you say, sitting on his bed after he gave you permission, Yeosang sitting next to you.
“Thank you, for saving me today. I’m sorry I cau-”
“Stop, you didn’t cause any trouble, that asshole did. You have nothing to apologize for.” You say, earning another smile. “So, any ideas what you want to do with your room?”
“I would like my TV here,” he says, walking to the wall and showing you, “and a computer desk here, and a seat here, so I can look out the window.”
“You know, I plan on taking all of you to get furniture for your section of the balcony as well.”
“Really?”
“Yes, so you can spend as much time out here as you want. Do you need anything?”
“No,” he says, still staring out into the back yard.
“Ok, I’m going to call everyone for dinner discussions after checking in with Jongho, so be ready.”
As you exit, you walk to the last room. Before you could knock, the door opens and Jongho looks at you before moving aside and letting you in.
“I heard you talking, so I figured I’d be next.” He mutters tips of his ears turning red. You look around and take in the room. His things aren’t put away, the washer isn’t going, but his bed looks like it’s been slept in, and you see the thin extra blanket from your room tucked under the comforter in his bed. Turning around, you see his eyes are sleepy but he’s trying to look awake. Walking to the mound of clothes, you grab a few and begin placing them in the washing machine, starting it before returning to see him sitting on the bed.
“Before you fall asleep, we will be discussing dinner, then after we eat, you can sleep as much as you want.” You say, standing next to him this time stopping yourself from petting his head. He reaches out and places your hand on his and you begin running your fingers through his hair. “Winter just passed and you should be awake from hibernation, but I imagine they wouldn’t let you. If so, you will be exhausted for a good while. But understand, you will be able to catch up on as much sleep as you need here, and you can hibernate in the winter. I won’t stop you.”
A tear slowly slides out of Jongho’s eye when you finish talking and he nods. It was so hard for him to stay awake in winter, but if he didn’t he would be hurt. When that wouldn’t work, others would be hurt in his place and that stopped him from hibernating. He felt like he would die from exhaustion, but now, he feels safe and that you will let him sleep and no one will suffer for it.
“Ok, let’s get dinner decided on, then you eat and sleep and you can sleep while we wait for delivery. Ok? Let’s go.”
He follows you out into the hall, while you call everyone down to the living room. They file in together and take a seat, Jongho laying with his head on your lap, blinking sleepily while everyone takes a seat, Wooyoung immediately running to cuddle the younger man, earning a grunt of annoyance but being too tired to move.
“Fried chicken.” Yeosang says before you could even open your mouth, everyone nodding in agreement. You have a feeling by the look on some faces, they aren’t exactly happy, but given what Yeosang went through today, they will accept the dinner idea.
After you choose sides and things everyone's happy with, you relax in the living room with the tv on, Jongho sound asleep while Wooyoung joins him. After the food arrived and was dished out, everyone begins talking about what they are most excited about to start trying to do, until Hongjoong interrupts.
“How did you get all this money?” He asks you causing all eyes to turn to you.
“Well…I wish it was exciting but it’s really not.” You say, looking at everyone, “I used to be a detective, and while I enjoyed my job, I had the same dream as most people, become so rich you never had to work. I developed an app, a stupid game, and when it got popular enough, I sold it for a few million, then I did it again with websites, more apps, and so on, until I got filthy rich. Like insanely rich. Most big companies don’t want little people to take money from them, so when you make a successful app or website, they snatch it up and either kill it or run with it.”
“That’s all you do?” Seonghwa asks taking a bit of food.
“For the most part, I do dabble in other things when I get bored, but mostly just this.”
That earns some thoughtful looks before everyone goes back to talking. You sit there watching them, enjoying their laughter, but also thinking about what to do with the auction coming up. In no way will you let any or your hybrids near it, but you also know you have to participate, and it makes your skin crawl.
After dinner everyone's exhausted and you all head to bed, you passing out when your head hit the pillow, and the hybrids sneaking into a sleeping Jongho’s room while they talk.
“She’s going to the auction you know.” San says, stroking Jongho’s ears.
“She won’t take any of us I trust her,” Seonghwa replies.
“So do I, but I don’t want her going alone.” Yunho chimes in, surprising everyone.
“We could sneak in, or just stay outside the place to watch her.” Wooyoung suggests, earning a few nods at that, the hybrids falling into silence before they split off to sleep in their rooms, San sneaking into your room again to sleep.
