Chapter 1: day out

Notes:

Canon universe. Red&Blue&Leaf

Chapter Text

Blue let out a small huff.

He trailed behind Red, who was just behind Leaf.

The sun beamed down on the three, but Blue was the only one who seemed to be bothered by it. The other two happily kept walking along the path. Leaf bounded across the ground with Red following suit.

He didn’t know where she wanted to drag them too, but he was getting annoyed more by the second.
“Leaf,” he put a smile on, “Where are we even going?”

She halted in her tracks and turned to meet his eyes. “I was wondering when you were going to ask that! You haven’t complained at all yet.”
She giggled and he felt a surge of anger. She definitely knew he wasn’t happy right now.
Even worse, she was avoiding the question.

Red had turned around too. His figure shook in laughter as Leaf smiled at Blue, patiently waiting for him to fire back.

Why’d he laugh at that? Blue thought, his cheeks flushing out of embarassment.
He choked out incoherent noises. Leaf’s smile widened into a grin and Red pulled the tip of his cap down to hide his face. They are soo amused, aren’t they?
They turned back around, getting ready to start running across Kanto again.
They barely paid mind to it, but Blue already knew the embarassment would stick with him for the rest of the day. And he hated that.

His annoyance only flared up more.
Even so, he quickened his pace and yelled at them to slow down.

It was storming. The three huddled under an awning together. In the middle, Leaf held the both of them close, shivering from the cold. On her left, Blue sighed. On her right, Red fought the urge to fall asleep.

Leaf suddenly ripped her bag off her shoulder, tearing into it. She was desperate to find anything she could use to shield herself from the pouring rain.
Blue let out a groan, and Red stared out into the dark sky.

She pulled out a thick textbook, flashing the other two with a look of triumph.

“You’re not going to try to escape the rain with that, are you, Leaf?” Blue snorted.
Leaf’s smile soured, “I am. You think it won’t help me?”

Red hummed in amusement. Blue leaned over Leaf and swatted at Red.

Blue elbowed Leaf, “My gramps is gonna fry you alive if you even try to use that against the rain.”
“Do you think I’m scared of him?” Leaf gave him a challenging look. “I can always get another one. Hey, I could even blame it on you.”

Blue scowled and grabbed the textbook out of her hands, raising it above his head. Leaf lurched for the book and in response, Blue just held it higher.

“…Stop.”
The two quit fussing as Red’s tired voice brought them back to the current situation.
”Agh, we should’ve brought umbrellas,” Leaf sighed, “Or Blue could’ve brought one. So, then we could make him protect us on the way home.”
Blue gave her a solid smack upside the head. She grabbed his wrist in response, digging her nails into his skin.

“I’m doing it, I don’t care!” Leaf sprung off the bench and dashed into the rain, holding the thick textbook above her head.
Blue had tried to grab her, but she was too fast.

Red just shook his head as Blue groaned loudly.

“Ugh, I don’t know what her deal is. Don’t you think you she should stop being so headstrong? I mean, come on!” Blue rambled on and on.

His eyes were shut tight, so Red took the opportunity to slip away. He’d rather come home drenched then ruin any supplies.

When Blue was done, he was shocked to find himself alone. Although the two were closer to Pallet Town at this point, they most definitely heard the loud yell Blue let out.

Chapter 3: brood

Chapter Text

”Blue, what’s your deal?” Leaf prodded him in the chest.

You know. Don’t play dumb with me, annoying girl. Blue bit back a million bitter remarks.

He doesn’t know exactly how this jealousy started, but it was probably because of the adults in Pallet Town and anybody else who encountered the three.

Everybody said the same things about them. At first, they would only praise Blue. Grandson of a respected professor and had great fighting skills to boot. At first, nobody paid any attention to Red or Leaf.

Then, the first few gym battles happened. Then, Red’s feats against Team Rocket were made known. Then, Leaf’s fast Pokédex entries were made known.
Of course, Blue wasn’t entirely mad. There was still lots of attention focused on him, but the other two were catching up quickly.

What really grinded his gears was when people started commenting on Red and Leaf’s friendship. He was always two steps ahead of them, so if he did run into either one; he’d of course battle and nag them, but he’d also listen to whatever happened in the last city they were in.
And that’s when he started to become jealous. Well, he didn’t acknowledge it. He brushed it off as it just being annoying, but truly, it made him angry.

He first heard from Leaf as she uncomfortably recounted a Pokémart clerk commenting on how good the two looked together.
When he encountered Red later, he seemed flustered about it.

He suddenly felt guilty. It wasn’t Leaf’s fault, so what right did he have to want to snap at her? She was obviously uncomforted by it more than he was.

He managed to respond with, “I’m sorry.” It caught Leaf off guard and her questioning look became even more confused.
She said something else, but Blue drowned her voice out. He was trying to stop the burning jealousy from getting worse, and more importantly— try to stop his heart from aching.

Chapter 4: start as soon as your feet hit the ground

Chapter Text

The three had clambered into Professor Oak’s lab, skidding to a stop as the old man (as Blue calls him) held his hand up.

“What’s the hold up?!” Blue yelled out, grabbing onto his grandfather’s lab coat.

The professor paid his grandson no attention. He continued to ignore Blue as he searched around in his pockets for something.

All of them knew exactly what that “something” was, but Red and Leaf were taught patience. Unlike somebody.

He pushed Blue away softly, and threw three shiny Pokéballs onto the table besides them.
Blue stopped his yelling immediately.

Oak smiled, “Red. You go first.” He beckoned towards the table.

Blue let out an angry huff, but Leaf put a hand up to his mouth before he could say anything. She shot him a look that said, Don’t ruin this for him.

Blue still had some sense left in him, so he just opted to frown at Red. Real hard.

Red’s cap obscured his face, but the other two could by his fidgeting and posture that he was extremely nervous.

Professor Oak seemed to notice too. But before he could say anything, Red reached for the ball on the left.

The other two waited with bated breath as Oak bent down to observe the ball with Red.

It was surprisingly lightweight, smooth, and glossy. Red was in complete awe.
“…Thank you.”

Leaf jumped up in excitement as Blue mumbled something akin to “Congratulations.”

Oak then turned to Leaf, who had already started to bounce her way to the table.

She immediately grabbed the far right one, much to everyone’s surprise.

“You’re not even going to think about it?” Blue asked as soon as she waltzed back next to him.

Leaf gave him a confused smile, “Do I have to?” She lifted the ball up so it could catch the light from the windows. “I’ll be happy with whoever my partner’s gonna be. I don’t know about you though!”

The last comment was obviously meant to make him mad. Blue took the bait and socked her in the shoulder.

Blue smirked in triumph as he saw tears in her eyes. She was fine, but the force had surprised her. Red rushed over to check if Leaf was okay.

Obviously she was, because she was hurling insult after insult at Blue as he coolly slid up to the table.

He picked the final ball up, peering into the translucent top to see a small blue turtle-like creature blankly staring back at him. Squirtle. He’d seen this little guy before.

Blue always preferred the bulkier and stronger Pokémon. He always told his grandfather that he wanted a Rhydon or Kangaskhan. Not some dopey little turtle!

Leaf took after Blue and looked into the top to see a green frog-like creature happily gazing back at her.

Blue scoffed and turned to Leaf, “Well, are you happy? You got an ugly little frog.”
Leaf balled her fist up and returned the blow from earlier.
Blue didn’t seem bothered by the pain, which is what made her really mad.

“Well, I suppose it’s nearly time we leave. Thanks for everything, Gramps!” Blue threw him a cocky smile.

Professor Oak simply nodded and returned back to his work.
Leaf had to drag Red out before he attempted to bombard Professor Oak with questions.

The second they were all out, Blue whisked around and threw out his newly obtained Squirtle.

Leaf jumped in surprise while Red quietly stood.

“Come on! Both of you! Take me on!”

Blue had expected Leaf to jump to action, he thought her surprise was just from the sudden movement.

How dumb he felt when Red stepped closer and threw his own newly obtained partner out. Charmander.

Leaf had shifted from surprise to excitement as she started cheering them on.

Red tipped his cap up to reveal his eyes, glistening with happiness and determination.

If anything, Blue was completely shellshocked.
He didn’t let it show though, and he wiped his mouth on his sleeve before yelling out his first command.

Morning dew slipped off the shingles of a house and plopped right onto Blue’s head.

He groaned in frustration when the other two laughed at him. His anger worsened as Leaf swept her hand through a nearby patch of grass and quickly swiped her arm on Blue’s sleeve, making it damp.

Making sure it didn’t escalate, Red quickly step in-between the two, careful to avoid the cracks on the sidewalk.

Blue noticed and snorted, “..Why’re you avoiding the cracks?”
Leaf gave a curious stare and tapped Red on his shoulder, “Hey, don’t tell me you believe that stupid rhyme.”

Leaf shifted her attention to Blue and her face soured. The expression on his face told her he had a lightbulb go off in his head. And it certainly wasn’t a good one.

”He does… that’s funny..” Blue smothered his laughs into his sleeve and stepped closer to Red, making the other boy lurch back. Leaf caught on quick and shoved Red into Blue, surprising both of them.

More importantly, Blue’s feet landed on a crack.

Most importantly, he didn’t even notice until Leaf busted out into giggles and a small smile flashed on Red’s face.

He let out an angered yelp when he realized and quickly jumped onto the grass. Blue quickly defended himself, “Y-You’re not funny. Why’d you even do that? It’s not like was gonna try and make him step on one or anything.”

Leaf kept on laughing, and Red just stood there. But Blue could see he was also amused by what had just happened.

Blue snapped at Leaf and came charging at her, but she was quicker.
Red just followed suit as the other two ran down Route 1.
