Several centuries ago, in the Garden of Eden, there lived the wandering humans created by God. Adam being the first man, and Lilith being the first woman. The story goes that Adam was incredibly selfish and controlling towards his first wife, intending to keep it that way and refused to compromise at all. Angered by his behavior, Lilith ran far, far from Adam in hopes he wouldn’t find her again.
On the way, Lilith was able to meet a curious and carefree angel named Lucifer who had fled to find his freedom, too. Spending many weeks together, living each one being as happy as they could be, the rebellious pair realized they had fallen in love.
God, watching over the humans, had observed what was going on. His initial plan of populating their kind had failed. Quick to come up with solutions, God simply replaced Lilith, bestowing a new muse for Adam to fall for. Her name was Eve; a beautiful, sweet, and naïve girl named Eve. Almost subconsciously, Adam had stolen her heart, and day in and day out Eve would look for ways to spend time with Adam or to get his attention. But, the harder she tried the more averse Adam seemed to be by her.
It wasn’t until later, when Lilith and Lucifer found Eve sad and alone in a quiet corner of the Garden, they asked Eve what was the matter. She wept and told the couple everything, and as her words came out Eve came to terms that Adam never could have loved her as much as she did, for he didn’t have any love in his heart from the very beginning. Drying her tears, Lucifer told her they had a special surprise that may be able to fix everything, if she followed them.
And so she did.
Through a river and over the hills, Eve was led to a great tree at the center of Eden. With a grin, Lilith plucked a large, glowing red fruit from a branch.
“This, my friend, is a fruit from the Tree of Knowledge. If you take a bite, you might gain the wisdom required to be able to woo this man of yours.”
Lucifer persuasively described the powers the fruit possessed, and Eve gaped in awe at this strange fruit. If she were to take even one bite, her exhausting pining for Adam would finally cease.
What none of them knew is that the gift came with a curse.
Heaven had watched as Eve consumed the bitter fruit she had been ordered not to eat, and the Angels appeared before her, infuriated by what she’d done. They said to Eve that she was selfish, attempting to force Adam to love her by any means necessary, and ultimately turning to the forbidden Fruit of Knowledge. They said to her that she never truly loved Adam, she only needed to be by his side to appease her infatuation.
As punishment, the fruit’s poison spread to every corner of Eve’s body and transformed her into someone unrecognizable. The Angels' last words to Eve were; "How disgustingly pitiful you are. If you choose to be so desperate to be loved, then you must also earn the love of another." Banished to Hell, Eve built a new life for herself on the outskirts of the ever-expanding Pentagram City. She constructed a palace entirely of stone and held together by thorn covered vines, and chose an area where no sinner could ever find and harm her.
Living in the realm of all that was wicked, Eve was able to pick up a thing or two as she occasionally paid visits to the city incognito. She learned that the only way to ascend in the ranks was invoking fear in the weak and claiming the souls of the more powerful, and warm, tender love from a partner wasn’t an ideal that was often promoted in Hell. At that rate, it didn’t even matter anymore. No longer was she the sweet Eve her creator wanted her to be. Eve managed to ignore that lovesick piece of herself she used to cling to, and into bits she crushed the hope that she would ever find someone to let into her dark heart again.
After all, who could ever learn to love a beast? A root of all evil?
