Chapter Text

Gardenview High School, a very prestigious academy designed exclusively for Toons. Apparently, the only reason why it exists is because the government doesn’t really know what to do with Toons and how to ratify their rights.

So, Arthur Walton and Delilah Keen decided to make a High School to prove that the Toons are sentient, self aware, and intelligent beings who act almost exactly like Humans.

If all the Toons make it to graduation, they will be awarded with their rights and will be implemented into Gardenview’s Educational Center and Musuem to be working as characters of a show as well as having a duty to teaching future generation good values.

The top 8 valedictorians will be awarded the status of “Main Character” when they graduate. Which causes for competition to be among the Toons. Nonetheless, we are in due time for introductions.

Dandicus Dancifer (L-001)

Dandy is the President of the Gardening Club who is very known for his vibrant and rainbow petals. Dandy is known to be kind, friendly, and passionate about his hobbies. However, sometimes people like to push his buttons which causes him to snap on others. Rarely, this reveals the paranoid, impatient, and generally frustrated Toon that he hides under his optimistic facade.

“I like talking to him, he makes a very good listener.” - Astro

Pebble Dancifer Jr (M-001)

Pebble is Dandy’s pet. He usually acts affectionate and playful to his owner unlike compared to the rest of the Toons. He can seem to be easily angered, expressing this with his barks. He understands English but cannot speak it. Since Pebble is a pet rock dog, he is the only Toon who is excluded from the valedictorian requirement to be a “Main Character” as he was always intended to be one even before Gardenview High School was founded.

“Pebble, my favorite one and only pet! You always find ways to make me smile!” - Dandy

Astro Novalite (M-002)

Astro is the President of the Astronomy Club. Astro is a very shy and soft spoken Toon. It was speculated that Astro is the only Toon who has been granted an accommodation because he refused to go into public without his blanket and cap. Astro enjoys the peace and quiet which can occasionally have him come off as standoffish. He will most likely refuse eating lunch or hanging out with others after school, not because he doesn’t like someone, but purely because he’s tired.

“I like how soft spoken he is, he makes Brightney’s Book Club nicer that way..” - Razzle

Sprout Seedly (M-003)

Sprout is the President of the Culinary Club. He is a very protective, can come off as stern, and mostly logical Toon. He can be very clumsy when he is with his best friend Cosmo, however the two don’t let that get to their heads. Nonetheless, Sprout is a very fun and easy to talk to Toon at heart. He used to be the tallest Toon at Gardenview, being 6’1, until Flyte the Butterfly recently transferred, beating Sprout by one inch. In which he silently spites about. Sprout also has long leaves that act as hair in which he usually has tied in a low ponytail.

Hehe, I know you’re not changing the “delictable” sign, Sprout!” - Cosmo

Shelly Fossilian (M-004)

Shelly is the Captain of the Gardenview Cheer Team. She is an extroverted and encouraging Toon (WHO IS NOT IGNORED IN THIS AU MIND YOU.) who loves to cheer on her friends. She seems to have little to no patience for those who are consistently rude and harsh to others, which may explain her hinted disliking towards Vee. Despite which, Shelly is often described as “cute” as her actions and personality reflect towards that label. She is also known for her passionate love towards dinosaurs and any prehistoric life. Shelly can also come off as intimidating based on her scarily athletic performances especially during PE.

“So helpful and reliable! If I think I have no one, I’ll always remember that Shelly’s always got my back!” - Tisha

Vee Version 1 (M-005)

Vee is the President of the Engineering Club. She is a very straightforward and logical Toon. She can be seen showing off her confidence and superiority at times and can be unintentionally harsh. Vee tends to act dismissive towards other Toons, making up reasons such as she “doesn’t have enough time” but is more often than not seen going out of her way to do something positive for them. Vee has grown a disliking towards Shelly because she genuinely doesn’t believe her personality to be real. She is the only Toon in Gardenview to be in par with Dandy, grades wise. Her GPA is only a tad higher because of her classes, in which Dandy says it isn’t fair because “she’s a programmed robot.” In which Vee argues that not all AI is smart, and that the intellectual thing about their API is their ability to learn.

“She is my number one pick when it comes to tutoring! I’m so grateful to have her whenever I need clarification or advice regarding school!” - Brightney

BOBETTE AND BASSIE’S FILE YET TO BE ADDED DUE TO THEIR SCHEDULED TRANSFERS.

“So these are our candidates?”

“Not candidates until junior year, Devan.”

“I see.. So, they’re bets?”

“…I wouldn’t put it like that..”

“Austin, yes they’re bets.”

“Shhs, Sam!”

The school’s head faculty consists of 5 teachers. Devan Reed, Austin Russo, Sam McLaughlin, Shanon Mendez, and Veronica Hurley. They are the only teachers in the school who were appointed with the nomination of valedictorians.

“Well we’re only the first semester into their freshmen year. Who knows how’ll this play out?” Devan said.

”Well I can sure count on Vee to definitely have a secured spot.”

“What makes you so sure Veronica?” Devan replied, questionably.

”I’ve had enough personal conversations to know, she’s nothing short of brilliant.” Veronica said, like she was bragging.

”Well, if we’re showing off our top students.. You can’t forget about Sprout! He’s a prodigy and an expert cook. He’s only 15!” Sam said proudly.

”…Astro is very smart too.. He’s also nice to be with..” Austin said quietly.

”Don’t forget about Shelly! She’s my first student to ever make me feel so motivated to teach!”

“Shanon, she’s one of your first EVER students..” Devan replied, teasingly.

Shanon giggled at his comment. It was always nice to talk to her co-workers when it was lunch time. Until an interruption came bursting through the door.

”Uhm! Excuse me!” A familiar fishbowl came running through the door, spilling water everywhere.

”Careful, Finn!” Devan said with caution.

”I-I-m so sorry.. But it’s Shrimpo! He’s gotten into another fight… but this time him and Sprout are fighting!” Finn said, panicked.

All the “Toon Handlers” looked at Sam, Sprout’s designated teacher.

”I didn’t teach him to do that!” Sam said as if they were just accused of murder.

The staff rushed out of the room with Finn, following his lead.

”What’s going on?” Devan asked.

By the time the five got there, Shrimpo was already restrained and gagged with two jackets. He let out muffled screams as he tried to slip his way out.

“Sprout… What’s going on..” Sam said in an interrogating like manner.

”I’ll tell you later, I have to visit Cosmo in the nurse’s office.” Sprout said after he sped walked out of the courtyard.

Sam pinched the bridge of their nose in slight annoyance. What could’ve happened this time?

Chapter Text

Sprout had arrived at the Nurse’s Office and slowly opened the door to not disturb anyone trying to rest in there.

He quickly noticed Cosmo, who was holding an ice pack on a bruise on his cheek. He looked around the room. There were only two people. Poppy was laying down on one of the beds, with her hands around her stomach. She mentioned not feeling well in the morning, Sprout didn’t realize her stomach ache had gotten so bad.

The other person in the room was Ginger. She’s actually the only student nurse volunteer because she was the only person who requested a medical/anatomy class. In which they didn’t have enough people to actually input said class, so in return she treats wounds and does medical studying for the two hours she’s in there.

Cosmo usually doesn’t feel comfortable with people touching him other than Ginger and Sprout. So it was relieving to know Ginger just so happened to be in the office when he got hit.

Sprout then walked up to Cosmo and sat next to him on the chair beside him.

”Hey, you okay?” Sprout asked concerned.

”It stings a little, but I’ll be fine.” Cosmo replied, softly.

”I’m glad. And don’t worry, I took care of that little Shrimp.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, I went and confronted him after you had told me what happened..”

”Sprout!!!” Cosmo said while elbowing Sprout.

”Sorry!! He picked a fight with me and lost of course. I had that kid GAGGED.” Sprout said while laughing.

”What do you mean gagged?” Cosmo giggled.

”Well I pulled off his jacket mid fight.. So I used my jacket and his to tie his arms and gag his mouth. He can be so fuckin’ annoying sometimes.” Sprout said, with a tiny hint of spite in his voice. “To be fair, I was trying to de-escalate the situation.. So I had to restrain him.”

Cosmo slightly glared at Sprout. Shrimpo had only hit him because Cosmo accidentally spilled icing all over his head. They don’t even know how that happened. The cake roll supposedly tripped and his first instinct was to throw the entire mixture into the air.

Naturally, Shrimpo’s short tempered fuse went off and he punched Cosmo.

Sprout sighed in relief, because he was exhausted. Trying to restrain Shrimpo wasn’t exactly easy. He’s short, sure, but he’s surprisingly strong.

Suddenly, Shelly walked into the Nurse’s Office with a bruise on her arm.

”Hi, Shelly! What happened to your arm?” Cosmo asked.

”Oh, I’m in PE right now, and Scraps spiked the volleyball too hard and it caught me off guard so I couldn’t bump it in time..”

“Don’t worry, just sign your name on the log and I’ll help you out with that..” Ginger softly said.

Wow, the cousins were surprisingly so much alike.

Shelly promptly signed her name and what time she entered the Nurse’s Office. Ginger then gave Shelly a cloth to cover the bruise, she then put an ice pack along with a napkin on top of it.

”Have the ice on for 20 minutes, then off for 20 minutes. Repeat that until it’s melted, okay?” Ginger said.

”Thanks a lot Ginger, you’re the best.” Shelly praised while smiling.

Ginger returned the smile and walked back to her chair to continue studying.

Shelly then sat next to Sprout, holding the ice pack in place.

”So… What happened?” Shelly asked.

”Shrimpo punched him. And then he tried fighting me! I won, of course!” Sprout said, proudly.

“Hehe, why am I not surprised?” Shelly rolled her eyes while smiling.

“So…. Tell us, girl! How’s you and Astro?” Cosmo said teasingly.

”Hehe! It’s good, we’re good. How about YOU. When are you gonna stop bed rotting a get a J-O-B.”

Sprout and Cosmo gasped in terror as they interlocked their hands in fear.

”J-J-J-J-JOB?!” The two said in unison.

“HOW COULD YOU SAY THAT SHELLY????” Sprout said terrified.”

”Ooooo!!! I’m a JOB application, ooooo!” Shelly teased.

“PLEASE. Be quiet.” Poppy said muffled, with her face in the bed.

Shelly looked at Sprout and Cosmo as they snickered which turned into silent laughter.

The three noticed Ginger whispering to Poppy as she slowly got up from bed. Poppy then went ahead and signed on the log. They could only assume that Ginger told Poppy that her 30 minutes were up, and she had to go back to class.

Before Poppy left the room she said “I’m never eating mentos ever again.”

Turns out Poppy had a similar reaction to when you put mentos in coke. Which is really weird because she’s a bubble. But then the three remembered her drinking pop before she ate the mento.. Which caused the reaction? It’s really hard understanding Toon anatomy and biology..

Shelly then got up from the chair and dusted her shorts off.

”Welp, I think I’m gonna go back..”

“You’re not gonna skip the last 30 minutes?” Sprout asked.

”Not this time, I plan on kicking the kickball towards Vee before we leave.”

Sprout and Cosmo looked at her shocked. They didn’t take her to be a violent person. But they laughed nonetheless.

“HELLO? WHY?” Cosmo said with a face full of laughter.

”BRO. You don’t understand. Tisha was getting mad at Vee and so Tisha threw the ball at her. Vee caught it with one hand and threw it right back at Tisha, hitting her in the face…. She wants to aura farm so bad I swear..” Shelly said annoyance. “Half the time she only passes because she makes up strategies on how to win, and coach says “that’s being a team player.” Shelly rolled her eyes once more.

”So wouldn’t Tisha be in the wrong for trying to hit her first?” Sprout asked.

”Well it’s only ok when I do it.” Shelly snickered

The three shared one more hearty laugh before Shelly signed out and walked back to the field.

As Shelly opened one of the double doors, she squinted her eyes after being blinded from the sun's bright beams. She quickly noticed the rest of class out on the kickball field. She then noticed Tisha looking like she was about to have a panic attack after Goob had fell on the orange sand and it seemingly is currently staining her PE uniform, causing a giggle to come out of Shelly as she approached the field.

Her team actually had the advantage and was basically guaranteed to win. There were five on each teams. Team Shelly consisted of Shelly, Goob, Looey, Tisha, and Boxten. Team Vee consisted of Vee, Scraps, Flutter, Glisten and Gigi. The reason why Shelly's team was most likely guaranteed to win, was because everyone on her team had some sort of athletic ability (except Boxten) and their own unique ability.

Shelly was the fastest and strongest on their team, she was the type of girl people would say "back up! back up!" when it was her turn. Goob was able to straight up just grab the ball mid air without trouble —a guaranteed out. Since Looey is a balloon he can slightly glide and run at the same time, allowing him to quickly traverse the field incase the ball went towards a direction nobody was covering, as well as simply just jumping over the ball to evade. Tisha wasn't horrible, but she wasn't great either. Since she's smaller than most, she can easily evade the ball. Boxten was a hit or miss. It was either a horrible kick or catch or he runs it home.

Vee's Team had only three good players. Vee is a master strategist she has a great ability to quickly figure out plans to utilize her team's strengths and exploit the opposing team's weaknesses. Since she's also made of metal she can kick the ball quite far, but can't run that fast. Also may or may not have used the fact that she's a robot to burn people because of the sun, but you didn't hear that from me.

Scraps is fast. Faster than Shelly. She uses the wind as an advantage to make her even faster because she's paper. Not to mention her latching herself onto her other teammates to get to the bases quicker.

Flutter is really bad at kicking. Only reason why she doesn't get out is because her dashes allow her to easily manuever out of the way and dodge. She also can't catch. Which is pretty bad. Glisten is too scared to actually play in fear of ruining his makeup and breaking his glass. And Gigi was straight up just too lazy.

Shelly luckily got back in time when her team was finally kicking. It was supposed to be Boxten's turn, but of course he immediately volunteered the fossil to go in place of him, in which she glady took him up on. Shelly approached the plate. She glanced in Vee's direction who was in the outer field.

Scraps then swiftly rolled the ball in Shelly's direction which resulted in Shelly winding up her leg and kicking it straight towards Vee.

Vee's digital eye's shot up as she planted her feet and propped her arms up ready to catch the ball beaming towards her way. To everyone's surprise she caught it and threw it back to Scraps who chased Goob down and got him out. In response to this, Vee gave Shelly a smug and teasing smile, knowing Shelly kicked the ball that way in her direction on purpose. This ticked Shelly a little off, until she realized that her reaction was totally justifiable.

Shelly felt a bit foolish, targetting Vee like that. Shortly after, an airhorn went off, notifying the latter that there was 10 more minutes until class ended so it was time to go back into the changing room.

As everyone re-entered the building, and traveled down the hallways. Shelly went up to Vee.

"Hey, sorry for kicking the ball at you like that. That was my bad." Shelly softly said.

It took a bit for Vee to compute a response as she continued walking. She then ultimately decided to ignore Shelly.

Shelly quickly took light at this and knocked at her TV head. Causing a "BZZT" noise to come out, having Vee snap her neck to the side to look Shelly in the eye.

"You know, you're usually supposed to reply." Shelly said with annoyance.

"You're usually also not supposed to beam the ball." Vee snapped back.

"... Fair point... I'm still sorry though."

"Ok. Thanks." Vee said after accelerating a tiny bit, having Shelly fall back with her group.

Shelly reluctantly let her get ahead. She wasn't the person to argue or instigate. To be fair, Vee also had no obligation to accept or reply to Shelly. The more Shelly thought about it the more stupid she felt for trying to hit her. Though she felt bad, it didn't make her dislike Vee any less.

"I can't stand that outdated tech sometimes. She acts like she's all that when she really isn't." Tisha said with an angry whisper.

"Um. Except she is all that.. We all took exams before we started to determine our classes, and we both got stuck with normal freshmen classes.." Boxten nervously said.

"Holy glaze." Gigi said after inserting herself into the conversation.

"Hey! It's not glaze. I talk to Vee on an everyday basis she really isn't a bad person when you get to know her." Boxten whined.

"Bro, this isn't a movie." Tisha budged in on.

"For real, in the BIG 2025." Gigi mocked.

"I'm serious! I help her with repairs sometimes -She's even gotten me a new backpack after Shrimpo threw my old one.

Gigi and Tisha gave each other the side eye as Boxten went on.

"C'mon guys that's enough." Shelly said. "Gigi, do you mind telling Flutter practice will be in the gym today?"

"Sure." Gigi replied.

"Oh right! You guys have the pep rally soon!" Tisha said excitedly.

"Yeah! There's gonna be REAL people there too. I'm a little nervous, to be honest." Shelly added. "It's a chance to show off."

"Won't they be streaming it live?" Boxten asked.

"Mhm." Shelly hummed.

"That sounds so scary... You're brave for that.. What if celebrities see you?" Gigi questioned.

"YOU'RE RIGHT!!! What if Taylor Swift or Tate McRae see me? Or maybe even Sabrina Carpenter?? NOW I HAVE TO GIVE IT MY ALL." Shelly fangirled.

Vee made a BZZT noise from the distance as she stopped walking. She then turned around and approached the group, specifically Boxten. She then whispered something into his ear. The group was confused, but nobody wanted to say anything with the robot there.

"I have to go guys, see you later." Boxten said.

"Byee! Talk to you later!" The group said in unison.

Shelly watched the two walk the opposite direction in the reflection of Gigi's head. Vee turned her head towards Boxten as they talked. Her face made a "^_^" and a variety of other different emoticons. Like a ":D" and "-__-." Something about that made Shelly angry. She didn't know exactly why, but the seeing the unamused and brash gameshow host act so full of emotion, compared to everyone else.... It didn't feel right. She quickly tried to ignore it though, to prevent the feeling gnaw at her any longer. It wasn't that big of a deal anyways, it's not like Vee had actually done anything specifically bad to her. She's just annoying.

As the rest of the group went their own separate ways, Shelly made her way to the locker room. It was approaching 3PM which was in due time of their practice. Shelly noticed nobody was in the locker room, so everyone was most likely in the gym already. The fossil went ahead and quickly changed to not cause a delay between their rehearsal. She then grabbed her duffle bag and started heading towards the gym.

Once the Ammonite had finally reached the gym, everyone was already there waiting for her.

"Hi, Shelly!" Poppy waved.

Shelly returned the wave as she placed her duffle bag by one of the bleachers next to everyone else's bag. Meanwhile everyone got into a line, shoulder to shoulder. Shelly then approached the line and stood infront of them, facing them, ready to relay instructions.

"Alright everyone. As you know, our FIRST ever performance is next week!" Shelly hyped, causing a cheer and clap from the other four members. "So, for the rest of the week, I want you all prioritizing stretches and recovery days. NOT meaning there's no conditioning, but to take it easy. That way we can avoid injury. Now, let's get started on warmups."

They all got into their own spaces in the gym, doing various warmups such as jumping jacks, high knees, arm circles, and jogging in place. They then moved onto some dynamic stretching to help loosen the muscles, then finished up with basic cheerleading drills to prepare on what they'd be focusing on for that day. Shelly was actually the Coach and Captain of the Cheer Team, when she requested for an actual professional the staff gave her an unfortunate reply of "We don't have the budget."

However, they did say that if they did good on the pep rally that was being broadcasted, they would most likely receive more funding from investors, allowing for more coaches and teachers to be hired.

They then proceeded into normal conditioning, to strengthen their muscles and for general stretching.

After they finished their conditioning, Shelly grabbed her phone and started recording at the center of the Gym. That way she could look back at their performances and give feedback. Once she finished setting it up, she gave the thumbs-up to the "DJ" who was Toodles, to start the music. Shelly didn't even ask for volunteers, Toodles just wanted to play loud music and watch. Toodles then gave back a thumbsup and started playing the song.

Their Cheer Mix was very danceable, mostly consisted of pop music.

It started with  "***Flawless (feat. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie) by Beyonce" to "Haunted" by Beyonce, followed by, "Shake It Off (Taylor's Version)" by Taylor Swift proceeding to "HOT TO GO!" by Chappell Roan to "Telephone" by Lady Gaga and Beyonce, then it ended with "It's ok I'm ok" by Tate McRae. (YES WE ARE GOING TO IGNORE YOU CAN'T LEGALLY USE THE SONGS AS CHEER MIXES BUT IDGAF IM WRITING THE FANFIC!!!!!)

"I'm out that H-Town coming coming down
I'm coming down, drippin' candy on the ground
H, H-Town, town, I'm coming down
Coming, coming down, dripping candy on the ground—

It's what we see
I know if I'm haunting you, you must be haunting me
It's where we go
It's where we'll be
I know if I'm onto you, I'm onto you
Onto you, I'm onto you
Onto you, you must be onto me—

My ex-man brought his new girlfriend
She's like, "Oh my God!" but I'm just gonna shake
And to the fella over there with the hella good hair
Won't you come on over, baby? We can shake, shake, shake (yeah)
Yeah, oh, oh—

H-O-T-T-O-G-O
You can take me hot to go
H-O-T-T-O-G-O
You can take me hot to go

What's it take to get your number?
What's it take to bring you home?
Hurry up, it's time for supper
Order up, I'm hot to go
What's it take to get your number?
Hurry up, it's getting cold
Hurry up, it's time for supper
Order up, I'm hot to go—

Stop callin', stop callin'
I don't wanna think any more
I left my head and heart on the dance floor
Stop callin', stop callin'
I don't wanna talk anymore
I got my head and my heart on the dance floor-

Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh
Stop telephonin' me, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh (stop telephonin' me)
I'm busy, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh (I'm busy)
Stop telephonin' me, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh

Can call all you want, but there's no one home
And you're not gonna reach my telephone
Out in the club, and I'm sippin' that bub
And you're not gonna reach my telephone—

It's okay, I'm okay, had him in the first place
It's okay, I'm okay (okay)
It's okay, I'm okay, I don't really gotta say
It's okay (okay)

You can have him anyway (way)
Anyway (way)
You can have him anyway (way)
Anyway (way, way, way)

I don't want him anyway, girl, take him
I don't want him anyway, girl, take him
I don't want him anyway, girl, take him (girl, just take him)
I don't want him (yeah, I don't), I don't want him (yeah, I don't)
I don't want him (anyway) anyway, girl, take him (anyway)
I don't want him (anyway) anyway, girl, take him
I don't, it's okay, it's okay, take him
I don't want him (yeah, I don't), I don't want him"

Is EXACTLY how the songs would transition.

After finally finishing their rehearsal, the 5 members were well spent. They had to continuously practice the last song, because the movements were a bit tricky for the group. However, they finally got it down, allowing them to rest.

The clock reached 4:45PM. It was time to go home.

After all the Toons finally said their goodbyes, Shelly decided to go straight home instead of changing. She roamed the quiet hallways, with the only audible sound being her own footsteps. Shelly observed the checkered pattern of the blue, green, gray, and white floor. Almost as she was counting each square she stepped on.

She quickly got bored of this, and decided to look up to make sure she doesn’t bump into something.

However, she saw something in the corner of her eye. Someone was still here. Why at this time of day? Surely it can’t be a club meeting, she would’ve already heard conversation at this point.

Shelly halted her movement, debating if she should satiate her curiosity, or go home minding her own business. But, she ultimately then decided to make an excuse for herself. Wondering if this was a place she could perhaps offer her assistance.

Shelly walked up to the door’s window, peaking to see if anyone was inside.

She was then met with the most unexpected surprise.

Inside, Boxten was sitting on a type of couch, with he’s eyes closed and smiling. Unfortunately he wasn’t the only person there. Vee was sitting right next to him, head ontop of his, since she couldn’t exactly lay on his shoulder.

Her screen displayed nothing. Maybe she was powered off? Whatever. Shelly didn’t care.

The fossil walked down the hallway, having a buried feeling of annoyance she refused to acknowledge. What was so upsetting about that? She could careless about Vee and her life, it didn’t affect her in anyway whatsoever.

As Shelly approached one of the main exit doors, she saw yet another person.

It was Astro! What a pleasant surprise!

He saw her and smiled as he slightly accelerated his walking to catch up to her.

”Hi, Astro!” Shelly said with glee.

”Hi… How was practice..?” The half moon asked.

”It was great, thank you. What are you doing here so late?”

”I was researching galaxies and supernovas.. I got a little too excited and curious and hadn’t realize time has passed so fast..”

“Oh that’s so cool! Do you mind telling me about them?”

Astro’s face lit up, almost ecstatic at the request. He wanted to rush her into a hug, but instead he slowly walked up to her and offered his hand, slightly revealing through his blanket.

Shelly gracefully took the offer of Astro’s hand and held it. He softly info dumped to Shelly about his findings, in which she found very interesting.

She always has liked Astro, for quite some time. He was nice, soft spoken and a good listener, he also didn’t like to cause trouble with others. Shelly enjoys the company he brings, making him an ideal partner to her.

As the two approached an intersection of the street, they finally had to part ways.

”I go this way. I’ll see you tomorrow!” Shelly exclaimed.

Shelly went ahead and softly hugged Astro, knowing he doesn’t like physical touch that much but makes her a slight exception. He returns the gesture by slightly putting his hands around her.

”See you..” Astro said before walking the opposite direction.

As Shelly walked down the quiet and warm street, she couldn’t stop thinking. Seeing Vee and Boxten bothered her for no reason. The thought kept striking her like a sword. She was probably upset for Boxten, because for all she knows she could be treating him bad! That could be it!

Shelly is just concerned for Boxten and his relationships.. Not that she should’ve known or been there anyways.

The Ammonite only wants the best for her peers. That’s DEFINITELY why she feels annoyed. No other reason.

[insert show commercial break where they show u a fun fact or something idk i just work here so here’s cheer team introductions]

Poppy the Bubble (C-001)

Poppy is a bubbly (pun intended) and fun toon! Thanks to her loud and friendly personality, she made quite the name of herself. She loves socializing and is generally a very enthusiastic person. However, she can be gullible and mind be described as "head full of air" even though that's true literally, it's usually meant as an insult. Nonetheless, she's a great and hardworking person! She is a a flyer on the Gardenview Cheer Team, due to her being so light-weighted.

Flutter the Butterfly (R-001)

Flutter is a mute Toon, but she has never let that stop her from being helpful! She loves to be friendly, caring, as well as a bit gossipy when it comes to her peers, but she never has bad intentions. She doesn't have the best grades, due to not having arms. Nonetheless, this hasn't stopped her in which she's learning how to write with her feet. It's actually a little goofy to watch in real time, but everyone acknowledges and admires how hard she's trying! She's working hard to stay on the Cheer Team as a flyer, because she could be benched due to her GPA.

Yatta the Piñata (C-008)

Yatta is a very crazy and hyper, but generous Toon! She always loves to put her friends on a pedestal, purely due to admiration. But despite contrary belief she's actually very smart! Her flexibility and energy makes her a core member of the Cheer Team as a base and a backup flyer. She has tried convincing Shelly to allow Looey to join their team in substitute of not being able to start an actual Circus Troupe. However, Shelly says he needs to pass tryouts first, and it might not be guaranteed due to his fragile nature, but she'll definitely consider it! Nonetheless, Yatta is a very enjoyable Toon to be with if you match her energy!

Cocoa the Chocolate Bunny (R-008)

Cocoa can easily be described as a very helpful and hardworking Toon! Similar to Tisha's passion to always cleaning, the two can sometimes overwork themselves due to it. Despite which, Cocoa never falters when it comes to continuing being jolly and kind. Due to her bunny structure, her legs are very important when it comes to being a spotter and side base in the Cheer Team. She always wants to see the good in others and can be a little pushy when it comes to helping others in the process.

Chapter Text

It was the end of the day. Everyone had already gotten back to their dorms, and since today was a Friday, nobody had any extra curricular activities.

In which, Sprout thought was a great time to text the groupchat.

The groupchat was named “let’s all be smart and not tell sprout” because of the one time Sprout asked if the musical “Hamilton” made the Declaration of Independence.

The group currently consists of 11 people.

Sprout: who wants to play roblox

Rodger: Say that again.

Glisten: who added you?

Glisten removed Rodger from the conversation

Shelly: 😭😭 doing anything but yo work

Scraps: OH MY GOF U HUST REMINFRED ME TAHTD I HABE A PRPJRFT DUE.

Shelly: ✌️🥀

Poppy: you’re gonna fail xx hope this helps!

Vee reacted with a “👍”

Vee: Boxten asked for help.

Poppy: i didn’t know boxten took art 1

Vee: He said drawing soothes his nerves.

Poppy: wait that’s lowkey genius.. i’m gonna ask him if we can hang out tmrw n draw

Vee reacted with a “👍”

Sprout: FaceTime 5 Active

“GO, GO, GO, GO!” The four said in unison

As Sprout, Poppy, Gigi, Glisten and Shelly were on FaceTime, they were playing truth or dare because the group got bored of Roblox.

Poppy dared Sprout to knock REALLY hard on Rodger and Shrimpo’s door and run as fast as possible. In which, he agreed to let his secret mischievousness out.

Sprout put on some shoes in which he dubbed “Speedy Shoes” because he swear it makes him faster.

The tall strawberry then bolted down the hallway, banging on the doors of the detective and shrimp, before running back into his room.

After he had finished the dare, they shortly heard muffled yelling from Sprout’s mic.

“WHAT THE HELL DO YOU WANT!!! Shrimpo yelled.

“I.. didn’t knock?” Rodger replied.

“YOU’RE THE ONLY OTHER PERSON WHO’S HERE!!!”

“That doesn’t mean I did it.”

“I DON’T CARE!!” Shrimpo yelled after he launched at Rodger.

The crustacean grappled Rodger, in which he was able to easily maneuver out because of size difference. He then pushed Shrimpo out of the way and slammed the door on him.

“OPEN UP NOWWWWWW!!!!!” Shrimpo yelled, voice tight with rage.

The five toons were dying of laughter hearing the muffled shouting for almost fifteen minutes.

However, they quickly stopped laughing when they noticed Dandy and Vee join the FaceTime at the exact same time.

“Who banged on the doors?” Dandy asked.

“What do you mean?” Sprout asked, pretending not to know what he was talking about.

Dandy then turned on his camera, along with the other five except for Vee.

The rainbow flower then squinted in suspicion.

Dandy was looking quite a mess.

For one, his leaves were pretty messy and the gardeners outfit he was wearing was filled with stains. Not to mention, the eyebags that he had.

“Dandy, what’s going on you look like you just went through it." Sprout concerningly said.

Vee then turned her camera on. She was wearing a camisole crop top, along with some low waisted shorts, revealing her green waist. It looked suspiciously a lot like skin.

Everyone was shocked for a moment, because Vee NEVER joins calls, much less turning on her camera.

Vee then propped the camera up on her dresser and walked back so her entire body was in the frame. All you could see was Vee and her desk behind her, as well as a bed barely in the frame on the right.

She then pulled out edited printed pictures of Dandy.

“This is probably why.” Vee snickered.

Sprout and Glisten were trying their HARDEST to hold in their laughs.

Shelly had her hand covering her mouth, Poppy and Gigi turned off their cameras and muted so Dandy doesn't hear them laughing.

“So it was YOU spreading those pictures. YOU WAIT RIGHT THERE.” Dandy ordered.

Dandy quickly got out of frame of his camera, only showing his chair and room.

About two minutes later, Vee put down one of the pictures because she heard knocking on the door.

She expected it to be Dandy.

It was Dandy.

He then launched at Vee, and failed because of the height difference. Then rainbow flower started throwing pitiful punches as a result while Vee evaded and taunted.

Dandy then noticed that she wasn’t guarding her feet, so he kicked her foot as hard as he can.

Until he remembered she’s metal.

Dandy sucked in the pain, opting for kicking her straight in the chest with the sole of his foot, which worked.

It threw Vee onto her desk, accidentally unpausing her Spotify.

Busy Woman by Sabrina Carpenter started playing.

Dandy and Vee stared at each other. Vee was mortified while Dandy was just confused.

“Yeah I’m a busy woman I wouldn’t let you come into my calendar every night. But if you want my kisses, I’ll be your perfect Mrs’ till the day that one of us—” The robot quickly cut it off by pressing the spacebar on her laptop.

”Do you ACTUALLY-“ Dandy laughed before being immediately cut off by Vee.

Vee went and tackled Dandy, however he maneuvered out of it, pinning Vee onto the ground.

Then the Head Teacher ran into the room and broke up the fight.

”DANDY. WHAT ARE YOU DOING??”

The rainbow flower immediately got off Vee, and looked at Devan like a guilty lost puppy.

”I- .. She’s spreading pictures of me!”

“You have no factual evidence of that. I simply collected these from the wall.” Vee objected.

”Bro FUCK you Vee.” Dandy insulted.

”Dandy. I told you I had already handled the situation. We already found out who was spreading it.” Devan pinched the bridge of his nose in annoyance. “C’mon. Let’s go.”

The taller man walked out of the room, Dandy following.

As the two left Vee’s room, she looked back at the camera propped onto her dresser and started snickering, then hung up.

The silence was loud for a few moments.

”PLEASE tell me someone recorded that.” Glisten begged.

Everyone gave out their own answer of “No.”

“Their beef is CRAZY. Vee would’ve one hundred percent would’ve won that fight though.” Poppy predicted.

”Oh yeah, no definitely. Did you see his face when he kicked her foot? Bro forgot she’s metal.” Glisten replied.

”Dandy. I can’t continue giving you these accommodations and passes. This is the second incident I’m keeping under wraps for you.”

Dandy looked away from Devan with his arms crossed. He had a frustrated, yet disappointed look on his face.

”You do understand you’re a role model? People have expectations of you. You can’t just attack others, especially not based on speculation.”

Dandy sucked his teeth.

”If you apologize to Vee, I’ll see that you don’t reap the consequences of this… situation.”

Dandy looked as if he rather take the outdoor suspension than apologize to Vee. Devan signed at the gesture, almost not believing that the rainbow gardener would be this petty.

”Dandicus.”

Dandy twitched at the mention of his full name.

“You do realize suspensions are a five-point deduction right? You drop below 90 points and you are ineligible of being a valedictorian.”

Devan paused.

“You’d be ineligible to be a Main Character.”

Dandy almost shrieked at the possibility. What’s his purpose if it isn’t to be in the spotlight? He’s supposed to teach and influence a generation of children, so they don’t end up like his creators. Especially not like Delilah.

”….Dandy. You are extremely talented and skilled. Practically blessed with potential. Don’t ruin it by being arrogant and petty.”

”Fine.” Dandy reluctantly agreed.

“Good choice on your part.” Devan said.

In all honesty. Dandy feared Devan.

There was something so dark and ominous about his office. How when you walk in, it feels like a thousand eyes are watching you. How everything suddenly becomes so much louder when you sit the chair in front of him.

Dandy swears that whenever Devan gets like that, you can see the red look in his eyes. The red reflecting off of his pitch black irises.

Dandy quickly walked out of the office, he didn’t want the darkness creep up on him any longer.

The walk back to Vee’s room was unbearable. His head got caught up in his thoughts, accidentally replaying his memories.

Anxiety struck him, sending goosebumps throughout every nerve in his body.

Dandy genuinely isn’t a bad person. He’s actually very friendly and pleasant to be around, he doesn’t have any ulterior motives for the most part.

It’s just past events make him the way he is. He could understand why Vee may hate him. That gameshow host had always been attentive and had excellent deduction skills.

He wanted to be the bigger person, or at least bury the hatchet with Vee. So that’s what he was going to do.

Dandy knocked once more at the door that was name-plated “Vee.”

The robot opened the door once again and almost immediately slammed it upon seeing the sight of Dandy.

”Wai-!” Dandy yelped.

”What.” Vee said, coldly.

”Can I come in?”

Vee sighed reluctantly and opened the door, letting Dandy into her room.

”I just wanted to apologize for my actions.”

“Did Devan tell you to do this?”

”…Yes. But. I do genuinely want to say I was sorry.”

”I don’t forgive you, but I’ll accept your apology.”

”I’m okay with that. But, let’s be real. Can you tell me why you hate me, like genuinely?”

“You know why.”

An uneasy silence crept in.

Dandy nervously looked around.

”I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Dandy then used his hands to make a ”Do you have a pen and paper?” gesture with his hands instead of saying it out loud.

Vee caught on, in which she handed him the paper and pen that fell from her desk while they were fighting.

Dandy then began writing on the paper while speaking.

”Look, I just want to end this tension between us. If you don’t want to tell me, that’s fine. I’ll support your decision.”

Dandy promptly finished writing and showed the paper to Vee.

The paper read “I can’t tell you. They’re listening. I’m sorry.

Vee put her hand out, signifying to give back to pen. In which Dandy did.

“So it may be. Are you done here?” Vee said while writing

“Dv pxfk dv L glvolnh brx, L kdyh idlwk wkdw brx'oo ghfrgh wklv. L uhixvh wr eh nhsw lq wkh gdun derxw wklv. Zh fdq frppxqlfdwh wkurxjk flskhuv wkhq exuq wkh ohwwhuv.”

on the paper, then handed it back to the flower.

Dandy was confused. What’s with the letters? This is probably some sort of code.

Dandy raised an eyebrow, wondering what the robot is getting at.

He then ripped the piece of the paper that he wrote on, then ate it so it’d only be Vee’s dialogue.

Vee looked at Dandy grossed out and confused. Probably the most efficient way of getting rid of it without starting a fire, but still.

”Yeah.. I’m done, I’ll stop taking up more of your time.” Dandy said rolling up the paper and putting it in his sleeves.

He then began walking out towards the door, but before he turned the handle he said

“I do hope we can settle our differences one day.”

Then opened the door and walked out.

Vee almost scoffed at the statement.

Dandy immediately went into his room, anxious that somebody may have been watching him.

He then started searching up various codes deciphers, trying to figure which decryptor would work.

After almost 10 minutes of searching, he was considering giving up.

Until he stumbled upon a Caesar Cipher. He decided that’d be the last one he’d try. Dandy then pasted the code onto the decryptor.

It was then translated into

”As much as I dislike you, I have faith that you'll decode this. I refuse to be kept in the dark about this. We can communicate through ciphers then burn the letters.”

Dandy sighed into relief, knowing he finally got it.

“Of course she could shift the letters by three like it was nothing. “ The flower thought to himself.

Still this didn’t ease him any more. It made him more paranoid than usual.

A thousand “what-ifs” spiraled through his mind.

He then made his final judgement call. He’d cooperate.

Dandy then wrote his own coded message then began pondering on how he'll deliver this to her inconspicuously.

The rainbow flower sighed once more. Maybe even hinting to Vee that her suspicions were true might've been a bad mistake.

Darkness and anxiety welled in on the flower.

The thought of potentially endangering Vee because of this?

He may not like her, but he doesn't want her to get hurt because of him.

It was the next morning. Saturday, 9AM.

Not many people were awake though, well at least the people Vee tolerated at least. Their school worked like a boarding school.

They had all the amenities they'll ever need. A gym, pool, store for those who want to cook their own meals, laundry room, a secured campus for people to go outside or play on the court, and a P.O box for those who get sent things.

The toons can't necessarily get paid to buy their own things, so most of them send requests, in which the probability of it being accepted depends on your grades.

Dandy sent a request for gardening tools, in which he got sent back an acceptance reply almost immediately.

Vee sent a request for oil and maintenance tools so she could work on her robotic form without assistance and got an acceptance reply around the same time as Dandy.

Shrimpo sent a request for more punching bags, in which he was denied.

Nonetheless, Vee denied to go to the cafeteria to see if Boxten was there.

She then walked the long dorm hallways, went down the stairs, and after a little bit of walking, finally arrived.

Not many people were here.

It was Looey, Brightney, Teagan and Tisha. Looey and Brightney were sitting alone, whilist Teagan and Tisha were sitting and chatting together.

Vee was happy she saw a familiar face at least.

The robot then walked over to the lamp, greeting her a good morning.

"Good morning." Vee said.

"Good morning Vee! What brings you here?" Brightney questioned.

"I was just about to ask, have you seen Boxten?"

"I only got here a bit ago myself, so I'm not entirely sure."

"Ah, I see. Thanks."

"You've been spending a lot of time with Boxten lately! I'm glad to see you have more company."

"Thanks. He just helps me with a variety of tasks. He also isn't nosy, compared to some."

"Hehe, you talk about him as if you like him."

"No."

Brightney was stunned at Vee's lack of hesitation in her response. Poor Boxten, if he heard this conversation now.

"No?"

"Our relationship is strictly platonic. I wouldn't date him if I had the opportunity either."

Vee then sat down in front of Brightney, now noticing the conversation would take longer than she had expected.

"So... then what’s your type?"

"Lots of questions today Brightney."

"Sorry! You don't talk about yourself often, it's nice learning new things about you."

"I suppose that makes sense. I'll only tell you though, you're my favorite contestant after all."

"I'm glad to hear that!"

"As for my type... Hm.. I haven't really computed that, now that you mention it."

"Well, you're a computer.. Maybe someone smart or clever."

"Yeah.. I think it'd be-"

Vee then noticed Tisha glancing at her from a distance, with Shelly joining their party with Teagan. While Tisha seemed to be badmouthing her, Shelly didn't seem too interested in the early-morning gossip.

She was more of in her own world. As if she was trying to pick up the courage to do something.

"Sorry." Vee added. "I saw Tisha looking at me from behind you, so I stared back to see if she'd continue."

"No you're fine."

"As I was saying... I suppose you're right. I guess I would want someone who's knowledgeable and can keep up with me. A determined and committed characteristic. Encouragement too, that'd be nice."

"Oooo!!! Sounds like you're describing someone!"

"No."

"If you say so! "Next question!"

Vee giggled at Brightney's impression of her.

"How about your music taste? What do you like to listen to?"

Vee stared at Brightney for a moment, almost afraid to share what artists she listens to.

Luckily this moment was halted as Shelly walked up to the table.

Vee noticed Tisha and Teagan left, meaning Shelly most likely walked up to their table to talk to Brightney or just didn't want to be alone at a table.

"Yeah.. What music do you listen to, Vee?" Shelly said, with a slight teasing tone.

"...Nothing much. Why are you here?" Vee asked.

"Maybe I just wanted to start conversation. Also, you didn't answer the question." Shelly shot back.

"I'm not obliged to answer your questions, ALSO we didn't invite you here."

"You don't have to invite me to your table for me to come over here."

"Clearly, that's how your little group thinks when it comes to everyone else."

Shelly raised a brow, what did she mean by that? And poor Brightney, witnessing this so early in the morning.

"What do you mean?"

Vee lowered her eyes in annoyance, almost baffled how Shelly can keep up the "good-girl act." for so long.

"Your group. At lunch."

"I don't eat lunch here, so I wouldn't know."

"Specifically Connie and Gigi. They're constantly teasing Boxten, and when he asks to sit with them they shoo him off."

"...I see. Then, I apologize of that."

Vee crossed her arms and raised a brow at Shelly. She was almost surprised that the Ammonite was so quick to take responsibility and apologize for their actions.

"I don't control what they do, nor are we good friends. Only association I particularly have with them is because they're friends with Flutter, and she's my flyer.." Shelly paused for a moment. "NOT that I'm trying to devolve myself and justify it! I meant as in I didn't know.  ...So.. Thank you... For telling me."

Vee's digital brow returned back to it's usual place.

"I see. For the record, this doesn't change how I feel about you." Vee said, with slight spite.

"I wasn't expecting it to. This doesn't change how I feel about you either. You're clearly very protective over Boxten, in which I can respect of course! He's my friend too."

Vee almost looked insulted at the comment.

Brightney then looked at her phone, (which had nothing on it she just wanted an excuse to leave)

"Sorry guys! I have to go now, have a good day!" Brightney said she got up from the table and walked towards one of the doors in the cafeteria.

"Bye Brightney." Vee replied.

"Bye! See you later!" Shelly said in addition.

There was a deafening silence that filled the large room, with the occasional squeaks from Looey due to him being a balloon. It was then interrupted with a sign from Shelly.

"Since we got out of the way, do you mind answering the question this time?" Shelly softly asked.

"...Yes." Vee hesitated.

"The reason why I'm asking was because I could've sworn I heard Sabrina Carpenter play from your computer while you were fighting with Dandy. But the mic might've picked it up wro-"

"No." Vee cut off the shell.

"No, it's fine really if you do." Shelly said while taking out her phone, quickly unlocking it and scrolling through the screen.

Shelly then held the phone up to Vee's face, revealing a playlist on her Spotify account.

(i know it wouldn't look like this on mobile, but i made it on pc so you can see it better)

"It seems a little basic, I KNOW. But, I really do like pop music."

Shelly then began scrolling, revealing more songs from many more artists.

Vee scanned the playlist as she was going through, seeing songs the robot recognized herself.

"Would've Could've Should've - Taylor Swift

Don't Smile - Sabrina Carpenter

brutal - Olivia Rodrigo

ballad of a homeschooled girl - Olivia Rodrigo

this is me trying - Taylor Swift"

Vee reluctantly decided to show her playlist on her screen.

Shelly let out an excited gasp, before cutting herself off.

"I didn't expect you to be a Swiftie!" Shelly said, almost ecstatically.

"...I just like the dark storytelling."

"You don't have to excuse it, I'm totally fine with it."

"I'm not excusing it." Vee said after glitching her digitalized face back onto her screen.

"Whatever you say. But honestly. Those songs fit you."

"Elaborate?"

"Like, the mood is so dark and broody. Kinda like you."

"Ouch."

"I didn't mean that in a bad way! I meant that it makes sense you like her darker songs, especially Mastermind. Considering how your so "cryptic and Machiavellian. Nonetheless, those are really good songs. Especially The Last Time. I was honestly insulted when Billboard 100 said the song was easily forgettable and that's why it didn't do well."

The gameshow host took a moment to debate on what she should reply with. Her and Shelly weren't exactly on good terms. So letting her agonizingly monotone and jaded wall, preventing any Toon from even getting close to her barrier down, all to talk about music with the Ammonite who's personality is DEFINITELY a fake? Because nobody is that nice. Right.?

Luckily, she can compute these thoughts in almost an instant so there wasn't any long and uncomfortable silence that creeped in on the two. However, this genuinely was a hard decision. Taylor Swift and her fans are hated on plenty in general, which is why she's so hesitant to share it because she has a reputation to uphold. Shelly is an outgoing character, someone who does what she can without the fear of judgement. That's what Vee thinks at least. She would have no idea about the countless insecurities the fossil has piled up.

The whole thing was conflicting the robot. "Why so quick to share your interest and hobbies? Aren't' we supposed to hate each other? I still don't like you." she thought.

Vee then finally decided on what she was going to do next. Her reasoning became weirdly philosophical.

The reason why Humanity can never come to a full agreement is because we refuse to accept each other for our differences. People are so quick to judge and come to harsh assumptions about others who are doing nothing but minding their own business. Besides, what type of role model would that make Vee? If she becomes valedictorian, in which she will, what would that say about her?

Someone who can't even talk to people she dislikes out of pettiness and ignorance, and when given the opportunity, shoves it away with her excruciating unamused tone.

Yeah that can't happen.

Vee then became a little concerned with how much she was thinking into this.

"I agree." Vee said.

Luckily all her thoughts were just 6 seconds in real time.

"The Last Time is a beautiful and captivating song. It brings light to endless cycles that happen in relationships, where one is trying to desperately to hold on. I find the song very pleasing. Swift demonstrates it beautifully. The constant back and forth, the false promises, hell, even the instrumental choice! Especially the guitar part at the second verse." Vee then cuts herself off to play "The Last Time (feat. Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol) Taylor's Version" at 1:31.

"You find yourself at my door / Just like all those times before / You wear your best apology / But I was there to watch you leave / And all the times I let you in / Just for you to go again / Disappear when you come back / Everything is better"

"...Sorry." Vee suddenly became quieter, almost embarassed.

"I think we have a lot more in common then you refuse to admit." Shelly suddenly blurted.

Vee then displayed a "?" on her screen.

"I mean.. That's a beautiful way to analyze that song. I honestly feel the same way with Forever Winter. It's just so.... perfectly constructed. You know?"

"Mhm." Vee hummed.

"Like, honestly. I get it. The song is so good you start even admiring and praising the instrumental choice. As if it wouldn't be what it is without the adlibs, the drums, the guitar, and more."

"Speaking of which, I haven't listened to Forever Winter. I've seen it on The Vault Tracks but I haven't taken the time to listen."

"NO WAY?? REALLY?" Shelly looked betrayed and flabbergasted. "WE HAVE TO LISTEN TO IT. Look. Here." Shelly took out her wired headphones.

"I usually use my AirPods, or my wireless headphones, but I forgot to charge them last night. So we can listen with these."

"...Ok.." Vee hesitated as she got up from her side of the table to sit next to Shelly.

Not too close, but not too far.

Shelly then gave Vee the wired headphones. The robot then proceed to plug the aux into the side of her head.

However there was one big problem.

The headphones were short.

A little too short.

This caused Shelly to continue slightly shifting towards Vee, getting closer, bit by bit.

The headphones finally reached, but at a detrimental cost.

The two were touching shoulders.

This is so unbelievably awkward.

Curse you wired headphones. Shit barely works have the time without you playing with the plug for like 90 minutes anyways.

Shelly didn't dare to look at Vee's face.

Vee didn't have the audacity to move either.

The only thing the pair was thinking at the moment was "Thank god nobody is here." because how awkward would that be? Vee and Shelly sitting dangerously close, after months of being each others second biggest hater. (With Shrimpo being the first.)

"Forever Winter, right?" Vee said, still looking straight forward.

"...Yeah." Shelly replied, with nervousness in her voice.

Vee then played the song through her system, leaving the volume just below 50 so they could hear anyone coming in.

"He says he doesn't believe anything much he hears these days. / He says, "Why fall in love, just so you can watch it go away?"

Vee was an analyst. A perfect one at that. She had a tendency to overthink and speculate people's intentions. Did she pick this song on purpose? She knows nothing about Vee, so how could she pick a song so.... accurate?

'"He spends most of his nights wishing it was how it used to be / He spends most of his flights getting pulled down by gravity."

Ouch. For a robot, the song was. Hurting. Curse you Taylor Swift for always reading our minds.

"I call just checking up on him / He's up 3 a.m.., pacing / He says, "It's not just a phase I'm in" / My voice comes out begging / All this time I didn't know / You were breaking down / I'd fall to pieces on the floor / If you weren't around / Too young to know it gets better / I'll be summer sun for you forever / Forever winter if you go."

Vee displayed a ". . ." symbol on her face. This song cut a little too deep.

"He seems fine most of the time, forcing smiles and never minds / His laugh is a symphony, when the lights go out, it's hard to breathe / I pull at every thread, trying to solve the puzzles in his head / Live my life scared to death, he'll decide to leave instead."

Shelly slightly glanced at Vee, only to be notice that her nonchalant demeanor seemed to be breaking. The gameshow host looked shaken up.

"I call just checking upon him. He's up, 5 a.m., wasted / Long gone, not even listening / My voice comes out screaming."

Wow, Taylor Swift does wonders.

"All this time I didn't know / You were breaking down / I'd fall to pieces on the floor / If you weren't around / Too young to know it gets better / I'll be summer sun for you forever / Forever winter if you go, uh-uh, oh"

The room became empty, as they didn't even notice Looey left a long time ago.

"If I was standing there in your apartment / I'd take that bomb in your head and disarm it/ I'd say "I love you" even at your darkest and / Please don't go, uh-oh."

The song progressed all the way to its end, with no interruptions. Hitting harder than some.

Vee was in a dormant state for a moment.

Forcing Shelly to play her hand.

Shelly then leaned over to the other side of Vee's head, unplugging the aux after the song had ended.

The sudden gesture made Vee a little flustered because she just got taken out of her thoughts.

Shelly didn't think much of it though.

"So what'd you think?" Shelly broke the temporary silence.

"..It was really good." Vee replied.

"I'm glad to hear that!" Shelly softly smiled.

Gosh, why did this feel so complicated? That song felt like it was throwing Vee under a bus. Like it was reading her like a book. Every lyric becoming more accurate than the next. CURSE YOU TAYLOR SWIFT!!

But that's not even the biggest elephant in the room.

What was that?

The shoulder touching, the silence, the glancing? Shelly's funny if she thought Vee didn't notice.

Nonetheless, the entire thing was... conflicting.

The two didn't dislike the interaction.. but what does this mean for their relationship now?

Are the acquaintances? Friends?? Ugh.. Gosh no..

Shelly didn't feel much different then Vee did.

This scenario was quite complicated. The only different view Shelly had was becoming more optimistic on their relationship.

She doesn't want  Vee to hate her, but she didn't care if she did anyways.

Nonetheless, hopefully there's no more awkward tension in the future..

Right..?

Chapter Text

HELLO.

OK, this might not get many  comments byut i hope it does caus this is actually fairly important for readers n whatnot BUT DONT WORRY IM ALMOST DONE WITH THE CHAPTER

1. would you like the story to be genuinely realistic to teenage behavior other than just brainrot?

the reason why i ask this because if i make it accurate to how people act, i'd have to incorporate drug use (weed & vaping) alcohol use, dangerous parties, and etc. the reason why i feel adding these types of features is because i think everyone can agree this is very common behavior especially from students who are currently in highschool. i can also vouch for this because im 16 and i see this behavior all the time, good school or not. but i do wanna know your guys thoughts on this!

i'm not a fan of drug use at all, in fact i actually get quite bothered when i see people draw my fav toons high but thats just a me thing. i have no problem putting this into the story to make it as accurate as possible to teenage behavior, the ONLY thing i wont put is underage sex. YES I KNOW THAT HAPPENS but i honestly refuse to write stuff like that. ONLY hope of me even implying that the toons have had ANY intimacy like that is if we somehow ever get to the amount of chapters where they turn 18 . STILL i wanna know your guys thoughts so plaese let me know or i'll die or something idk

2. what type of ships would you guys like to see more of? and should i make chapters focused on subplots like that in the future?

this is a shellvision fic (sorry to anyone who thought it wasnt) with its own funny plot i have in store. i honestly like any other ship and dont mind putting more in the fic if you guys want it!! reflectivedetective, glitterhugs, hauntedlibrary, ghostcapsule, ragebait, shrimptea, berryfunny, fruitcake, midnightragedy, popmusic, flowerpop, moonflower, moonberry, christmascookies, strawberrycookie, cleantea, jewlerybox, glitterhugs, angryhugs, teacase, IDK THOSE ARE ALL THE ONES I CAN THINK OF ON THE SPOT BUT LET ME KNOW WHAT U WANT.. RAREPAIR OR NOT

3. how are we feeling with the current progression in the story

is it awesomesauce  is it bunz idk

4. any other features you’d like to see in the future like honestly anything that’s NORMAL and i like i’ll put it in the fic… stuff like shrimpo being the captain of the football team or something IDK

5. i couldn’t think of another question

Chapter Text

The air was awkward.

It was just them in the cafeteria, all the chefs had already pulled out the food they had on display, meaning breakfast was over.

There was no reason for anyone to be here.

So why were the two still here?

"I still don't like you." Vee blurted out.

"You've made that painfully clear. I don't like you either. Just makes listening to this song harder, now that I've stupidly shared it with you." Shelly paused, almost as if she was ready to spew out hateful things.

Vee then put her barrier back up, moving farther away from the fossil. Letting it down in the first place was a mistake.

"Nobody told you to come over to talk to me." Vee replied back.

Shelly was progressively getting angrier at the gameshow host's replies. Why must you be so difficult to get along with?

"You have a serious problem, you know that?" Shelly said with painful attitude. "You reserve yourself for absolutely no reason. Being so rude and blunt to ANYONE who even dares to decide to show a little affection towards you. Because, how DARE I try to go out of my way to understand you when you barely even understand yourself. So much knowledge and code in your head for no reason. Because what ACTUALLY makes you human, if you don't even have the balls to show complexity?."

Shelly then quickly got up from her seat. She then looked at the gameshow host in the eye, who was staring right back at her with her typical unamused look.

"Leavin' like a father, running like water. Sounds like she wrote that song about you." Shelly said, voice full of spite.

"Don't pretend like you know me." Vee shot back.

"Forget this. Forget you."

Shelly then grabbed her phone that was still on the table, snatching the wired earphones out of Vee's aux port, and sped walked out of the cafeteria, bumping into Rodger who was just walking in.

For the first time in Vee's life.

Being alone didn't feel good.

Vee then got up from her chair, and started walking towards the entrance Rodger just came out of.

"Do you wanna talk abou-?"

"Shut up." Vee said while walking right past him.

Vee's footsteps became heavier as she walked back into her room and it wasn't because of her mechanical body.

It wasn't because of their argument.

It was because she was right.

As much as she would hate to admit, Vee self sabotages a lot.

Never letting anyone in, and if they get close, smite them with lightning.

Vee internally started playing "The Tortured Poets Department" by Taylor Swift.

Except the song wasn't targeted towards someone.

It was towards herself.

The robot constantly replayed the last two verses.

"Who's gonna hold you? (Who's gonna hold you?) / Who's gonna hold you? (Who's gonna hold you?) / Who's gonna hold you? (Who's gonna hold you?) / Who's gonna hold you, gonna know you, gonna troll you?"

Vee sucked back robotic tears. Who was gonna hold her? She had plenty of friends, it's not like she was lonely. Just alone.

"You left your typewriter at my apartment / Straight from the Tortured Poets Department / Who else decodes you?"

Fuck.

Why does Vee care so much about it?

It doesn't take long for her to just, "/CMD DELETE PAST 30 MIN" in her console to completely forget about it and feel ten times as better.

But then again. "What makes YOU human?"

Her point didn't make sense at the time, neither of them were humans. They're Toons.

Until she remembered they're supposed to act human. They're supposed to act like people, in order to get the government to certify them.

Vee finally reached her room. She hesitantly opens the door, she can't help but feel that somebody's watching her. Whatever. Doesn't matter.

She twists the handle and walks back into her room and turns off the lights. She had nothing better to do, other than probably go to that party later. Might ditch it at this point.

Shelly was slightly eavesdropping from the corner of a hallway. Where she can see Vee but Vee can't see her. She can't believe she was really playing "The Tortured Poets Department" as a result.

A wave of guilt suddenly washed over the shell. Was that really necessary?

Shelly was projecting in that short lived argument.

She may not be as reserved as the robot but she definitely doesn't let anyone in.

She constantly thinks of herself as a burden, someone who constantly plasters herself in gold just to be looked at.
Always feeling that she's not good enough in someway.

Staring at the sun but never in the mirror.

Always feeling her body isn't slim enough, or she's too muscular for a woman.

She sees the comments people give each other on social media.

Not to mention her personality. God she can be annoying.

Her constant rambles about dinosaurs, always being overwhelmingly positive and encouraging. It's not like she's faking it like how Vee claims she is. She just wants to be seen.

It's not like she can blame anyone for that though, she puts herself in that position.

At least she has Astro.

Astro's great and all. They're dating! He sees her.. Kind of?

Shelly likes him, and he likes her. She likes to ignore the fact that Astro seems to enjoy spending more time with Dandy then her, but who could blame him?! They're childhood friends!

This really isn’t helping her case.

Nonetheless she still has that party she was invited to.

Well it’s not really a party, more of a hangout.

And of course, Vee will be there.

Shelly moved away from the corner of the hallway and walked down the hallway of the dorms.

The dorms were pretty big, luckily.

How nice for Arthur and Delilah to drop so much money for this project.

Well, to be fair, they’ve almost made it all back.

Shelly had finally arrived at her dorm which is unfortunately right next to Vee’s due to their names.

She took out her key that had a dinosaur keychain on it, inserted the lock, turned it right, then twisted the handle and walked right in.

Shelly sluggishly walked and fell onto her bed, not knowing what else to do.

In all honesty, she was feeling a bit burnt out.

All the pressure of their first showing. The one that counts. It really has her in a knot.

”Maybe I should text Astro about it!” She innocently thought.

”Sorry, I’m busy.”

Wow, that was short lived.

No biggie, everyone has their own work to tend to. He isn’t expected to drop everything he can for her at the ready.

So what to do now? She could probably call up Tisha and they could hang out at each others dorm.

Yeah, that seems like a good idea.

Shelly re-picked up her phone that she had placed face down on the bed after see Astro’s message.

She then went to her messages, pressed on Tisha’s contact and called her.

It ran for about 5 seconds.

”Hiiiiiiii!” Tisha said, excitedly.

”Hi Tisha! Are you busy?”

”Nope, nothing to do right now. I actually just finished cleaning.”

”Oooo, what were you cleaning?”

”Oh just the bakers kitchen.” Tisha suddenly said with spite.

”Hehe! Soooo, since you’re not busy.. I was wondering if you wanted to come to my dorm and we could like, watch a movie! Or something.”

“Alrighty! I’ll be there in ten.”

”Okay, see you soon!”

Shelly was happy Tisha needed ten minutes to get here. Because she now noticed she had a bit of clutter around her room that she needed to pick up.

Multiple items of clothes on the floor, some things aren’t put away, the cabinets still open, etcetera.

She’s not usually this dirty. Just not feeling motivated or willing to take care of her room that’s all.

She’s also ignoring herself as a variable in this expression.

Shelly has difficulty taking care of herself. Forgetting to brush her teeth, clean clothes, and even showering sometimes.

The only real reason why her routine is kept up is because of school, it’s why weekends are a double edged sword for her.

Obviously, she never let this slip.

Luckily once they pull off the show, she could loosen up a bit.

Time quickly passed by, and before she knew it, Tisha was already knocking.

Shelly didn’t care too much about her appearance when she was with her, they’re best friends after all.

Shelly then walked up to the door and let Tisha in.

”Hi, Shells!” Tisha said while pulling Shelly into an embrace.

”Hi Tish!” Shelly said while returning the gesture as well.

Shelly then let go of Tisha to close and lock the door.

”Have you decided what movie we’re gonna watch?” Tisha asked.

”Honestly, no. Not really.”

”Haha! Well that’s bad because I haven’t thought of one either.”

Shelly walked up to her dresser that was in front of her bed, with her Television right on top of it

”I gotta see what’s on the Tee Vee-.” Shelly paused. “TV first.”

“Speaking of TV’s. I saw her today, and I could’ve sworn she was staring at us.”

Shelly then grabbed the remote from the dresser and went ahead and laid down on the bed, with Tisha following.

”Mhm.. Did I tell you what happened today?” Shelly asked.

”No… What happened?” Tisha replied.

”I was stupid enough to think I could try to be her friend. We got into an argument, then I left.”

”REALLY?? MORE DETAILS PLEASE?”

”It’s kind of embarassin-“

”I. DON’T CARE.”

”Okay, okay! Her and Brightney were talking about music tastes. I could’ve sworn I heard Sabrina Carpenter play in her room when she got into her fight with Dandy. So, when I heard them talking about it I walked up to their table. We had a short argument where she told me about Connie and Gigi teasing Boxten. And then when I kept asking about her music taste, she refused to tell me what or who she listened to. So I showed her my playlist to prove there’s nothing to be embarrassed about.”

“Ugh, she’s so complicated for no reason!”

”Worst part is, that’s not even the end.”

”Huh??”

”She then showed me hers and we like some of the same stuff. I then recommended her “Forever Winter, in which she listened together. We like— sat next to each other, with my headphones.” Shelly hesitated to continue, but then reluctantly decided to start talking again. “It wasn’t bad. The moment was nice and all. Until she said some stupid shit like “I still don’t like you.”

“After all that?? I mean you could’ve just let the moment play out WITHOUT saying it out loud. Gosh she’s so annoying.”

”Yeah… I exploded on her right after though..”

”You? Getting mad?? What could you have possibility said?”

”I said some pretty fucked up things, to be honest. I said that “you’re so rude for no reason and you barely understand yourself!!! You also cannot possibly act human if you refuse to show complexity!!” Something like that.”

”You clocked her. Period.”

Shelly slightly giggled at Tisha’s comment.

”Still, I feel bad about it. She seemed genuinely upset after I said all of that.”

”Whatever, who cares! She needed the reality check sooner or later. I think you did her a favor. Maybe this time she won’t be so fuckin' mean to everyone.”

”I guess you’re right.”

Shelly isn't a bad person.

Bad people don't wonder if they're bad people.

So why does this feel so incriminating?

Maybe Tisha is right. Permanently burning the non existent bridge that they haven't even gotten the blueprint to, was a favor.

Whatever! Whatever! No more dwelling on Vee VERSION One.

The pair decided to watch a few episodes of "You" from Netflix.

They almost finished the entirety of season 3, and before they knew it it was 3PM.

"Man fuck that guy." Tisha abruptly said.

"Seriously! That's screwed up." Shelly added.

"Literally. What should we do now? Or do you want to be by yourself for a little. I know how you like your personal space."

"You know me so well Tisha. But, No, thank you I'm okay.. Hm... Wanna go to the library?"

"Kinda odd."

"What do you mean?" Shelly questioned.

"You never go to the library."

"Oh no I do. Just very late at night when I'm cramming." Shelly defeatedly said.

"Shelly..." Tisha said with her voice exaggerating in anger.

"Yessss?" Shelly replied as if she was just caught for grand theft.

"What'd we say about all nighters?"

Shelly sighed in disappointment.

"...Sorry. Just feeling a little stressed lately."

"Oh honey.." Tisha said while getting up from her laid down position into sitting cris-crossed on the bed, with Shelly following her into the same position.

"Do you wanna talk about it? I'm always here you know."

"Yeah, I'd like to talk about it."

"Of course, go ahead."

"Lately, I've been feeling a bit pressured. Just accidentally made this line of expectations in my head."

"Is it about cheer?"

"Partially. Well, like half of it."

"Mmm.."

"Since our showcase is in public, I feel very pressured. Like I know if it doesn't go well everything will be alright, but if it does go well the school can get more funding. Ginger could get her medical teacher and maybe we could get an actual coach for the team." Shelly put her palm on her head while sighing once more. "Not to mention, getting valedictorian. My grades are fine but I feel like they're not perfect enough. Not like V-- Dandy's."

Tisha raised a brow to the slight mention of Vee.

"Shelly, you are the most talented and not to mention the most kindest and hardworking person I know. I can get why you feel like you're under all this pressure, but all I can tell you is that everything will be fine and everything will work out." Tisha shifted a bit closer to the bed and put an arm around Shelly. "You have AMAZING grades, and if it helps you feel any better you don't need to have perfect grades like Dandy. Besides, I mean c'mon. LOOK at you girl. You're the reason why the Cheer Team feels so motivated. Poppy has told me on multiple occasions on how fun Cheer is because of you. So don't even worry about it."

Shelly softly smiled. Maybe there wasn't much to worry about. She was happy she decided to confide in Tisha about this, it made her feel a lot better about the whole thing.

"Thanks, Tisha. It means a lot." Shelly said while pulling Tisha into an embrace.

"Ah, just know I've got your back, alright?"

"Heh, of course..! And I've got you!"

"Flamingo pink, sunrise boulevard. / Clink, clink, being this young is art. "

Vee was half laying down on her bed. Pondering. Calculating. Computing. Many more adjectives for a computer making up something.

The gameshow host's antennas continually twitched. She wanted to delete the memory so bad.

But it's alright. Luckily she's a robot. She can easily put on her facade once more, long enough until it doesn't hurt anymore. "You gotta fake it till you make it" right..?

Vee didn't know what to do for the moment.

She then quickly finished calculating her thoughts and decided all this moping over a Shell who threw definitely not true insults at her was a waste of time.

She took a peak at her phone, seeing 13 notifications. Brightney sent 2, Boxten sent 4, Rodger sent 5, and Sprout sent 3.

Brightney asked to make plans, Boxten was asking when they could spend some time and gave a few suggestions, Rodger was being nosy, and Sprout was checking up on her.

How did Rodger even get her number? Whatever.

She decided to text everyone except Rodger back, leaving the magnifying glass on read.

She decided to hang out with Boxten once more today, to pass the time.

They decided to meet in the library.

Vee decided to put on a long black wool coat along with a light gray layered over a white collared shirt along with slightly baggy coffee jeans and black normal dress shoes.

They were probably going to hang out for a while like last time, so might as well wear something fashionable and comfortable.

Vee met Boxten in the library about 7 minutes after the plan was made.

Vee had entered the library with utmost confidence and sass.

She'd never admit it, but she felt very pretty at the moment.

Boxten was sitting at a table, already immerged in a book he had gotten from one of the many bookshelves.

He almost immediately waved at Vee and smiled.

The box was wearing some desaturated blue jeans, a gray shirt along with a black jacket. They were kind of matching by accident.

Vee smiled and returned the wave towards him.

She walked up to him and pulled out a chair from the brown table he was sitting at.

"Hey." Vee said, already starting conversation.

"Hi, Vee. Could you help me with some calculus questions?"

"It'd be my pleasure."

"You're the best."

Boxten was excellent at math. He didn't know he had a knack for it until he was assigned Algebra 1 and realized the entire mathematical concept was actually really enjoyable.

So he decided to be completely ahead of the class by studying multiple math classes and units ahead of time.

Before he knew it, he was already on calculus.

He had already put in a request for a transfer into a more advanced class, but he has yet to be heard back on that.

"This was the question I was stuck on." Boxten said while turning the paper around and passing it towards her.

Vee took a quick moment to look at the page. She then looked up at him and displayed the solution on her screen.

"Note that d/dx( x f) = x f' + 1*f. So when you read the second line it says d/dx(x*f) =d/dx(x^4 - x), meaning x*f = x^4 - x + C for some C. This implies that f = x^3 - 1 + C/x. Now note that f'(x_ = x^3 - 1 + 8/x. Which is why we now read it off as f(-1) = -1 - 1 -8/1 = -10."

Boxten was nothing short of impressed and in awe.

"Wow! Vee, you're so smart. I'm glad I can count on you when it comes to stuff like this."

Boxten then took back the paper, and starting writing on it. He then started suspiciously giggling which sparked curiosity in the gameshow host.

"I don't remember calculus being this funny."

"Haha, no.. I'm just making sure you're getting your credit due."

Boxten then lifts the paper and puts it infront of Vee, showing what he doodled.

And if pigs flying wasn't crazy enough, Vee let out an actual laugh.

Not synthetic, not sarcastic, no agonizing monotone, a laugh.

Shelly and Tisha just so happened to walk into the library at that exact moment, just in time to witness Vee being more than an egotistical robot.

Shelly was wearing a beige skirt with tan leg warmers and ankle height black boots, accompanied with a brown sweater with a "THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT logo embroidered on the left chest with a white stripe on sleeve cuffs and neckline. Meanwhile Tisha was wearing high waisted light blue jeans with black and white converse shoes as well as a solid color dark blue hoodie. She also had a beige tote bag hoisted on her shoulders.

Tisha scoffed at the sight and directed Shelly towards the opposite end of the room.

The two found an identical table and pulled out the chairs and sat down.

"Ugh. Of course she's here." Tisha whispered, voice filled with spite.

"..Yeah.." Shelly replied, almost unsure.

Meanwhile Vee and Boxten were having casual conversation, until Vee suddenly slightly peeked over Boxten's shoulder and looked into a distant mirror.

The mirror was displaying Shelly and Tisha's reflection, making Vee aware of all of the glances Tisha kept giving her.

"Hey, Box, in a few seconds, peek over my shoulder and look at Tisha. She's gonna give me an other glance." Vee said with an annoying smug smile on her face.

"Okay..?" Boxten complied.

He looked over Vee's shoulder, and like clockwork, Tisha glanced at her once more.

"Wow! You were right!"

"I know, I always am!" Vee gave a winning smile. "I honestly don't know what her problem is with me. Last time I asked she said "I have my reasons, Vee." When I pushed for a little more description, she said "UGH! Forget it-!" and stormed off.

Boxten had a puzzling look on his face, also trying to figure out Tisha's reasoning.

"Maybe her cleaning?" Boxten suggested.

Vee tilted her head in confusion.

"Cleaning? Please elaborate."

"Well, have you noticed how much our Janitors have been slacking off lately?"

"Hm.. Sometimes, yes. I don't really question it though."

"Yeah.. It's because she's doing all of the work."

"Really?"

"Mhm.. Sometimes, when I'm studying late I see her cleaning. For hours sometimes. She seems stressed and overworked." Boxten burrowed his eyebrows in sympathy. "Maybeee that's why?? I'm not sure. But just to be safe, maybe try.. I don't know.. like.."

"C'mon Boxten.."

"S-sorry! I meant as in like. Try complimenting or acknowledging her work sometimes..?"

Vee crossed her arms and laid a little back in the chair she was sitting in. Her antenna's twitched which was usually a tell that she was deep in thought.

Vee's rudeness isn't intention. She played back some memories to try and distinguish where and when exactly she could've sparked this tension.

She finally found some footage. The robot was a little baffled that such a short and quick moment could initiate such a relationship between them.

It only lasted a few seconds.

Tisha was quietly mopping the floor, until Vee stepped right on top of the damp puddle, smudging it with her shoes. Tisha had called out her rude behavior, but Vee ignored her.

For a reason you may unexpect.

At that time, she was disassociating. Deep in thought. So submerged in her code she was unaware of her surroundings.

She walked straight past Tisha, with the most blank look on her face. Barely even illuminating her digital face as she treaded the hallway.

She decided to cut this thought off, not wanting to indulge in it further.

Vee's antenna's twitched again, symbolizing she had gotten out of her calculating thought.

"I see.. I hadn't realized my mistake." Vee paused. "...Perhaps I should.. A- BZZT- acknowledge her work. More."

"Someone sounds a little out of tune!" Connie suddenly appeared, almost as if she was always there.

"Tch, it was just for a moment." Vee scoffed.

"Eh, pretty sure you make that noise a couple times throughout the week!" Connie teased.

"What, are you counting the times???"

"Nah, I just take notice of things! Many things! I'm just a good observer."

"Haha.. I suppose you are Connie.." Boxten nervously said. "S-speaking of which.. Do you think you could stop scaring me around corners?"

"I'll think about it."

"..."

"..."

"And-?"

"I've decided I'll keep doing it! You're too easy of a scare!"

Boxten started fidgeting with the zipper of his jacket, almost trying to distract himself from the fact that Connie just outright denied his request to stop harassing him.

Vee then gave Connie a sharp look.

"Non negotiable." Vee said with her usual mechanical calm, except this time it felt like the line was laced with spite.

"Jeez." Connie sucked her teeth as she floated and phased away.

Boxten then looked down, guilty that Vee had to stand up for him again.

"Sorry..." Boxten silently blurted out.

"For what?" Vee questioned.

"For.. uh.. Having you stand up for me... again.."

"What? Of course, it's no big deal."

"W-well I know! I just think I should.. learn a little independency.. So I feel a little bad that I c-can't stand up for myself and you and Poppy are... really the only ones who do.. so.."

"Boxten, it's seriously not a big deal. I think you're great the way you are."

"Thanks.. That means a lot coming from you."

"Haha, thanks. By the way, is there somewhere you want to go next? Or would you like to just call it a day for now?"

"Hm... Wanna walk outside?"

"Sure. Sounds nice."

The two got up and picked up their things and promptly left the library. Before they headed to the courtyard, Boxten made a quick pitstop to his dorm to drop off the paper and pencil so he isn't carrying it around the entire time.

Once they finished the small chore they headed outside and started following the sidewalk trial that wrapped around campus.

Tisha let out an annoyed sigh.

"For some reason, everywhere we go, she just SPAWNS there." Tisha said.

"I guess.. Anyways! I was thinking about doing a bit of studying on some more sauropods before I get back to some AP World studying." Shelly then stretched her arms out in a yawn. "Dr. Mclaughlin is giving ANOTHER unit test. I seriously hate this teacher sometimes.."

Tisha softly smiled as she watched Shelly get up and scroll through the large selection of bookshelves.

"I'm surprised you can even keep up with it. If I was in this situation, BEST believe I'd beg for a schedule change so I can bed rot all day to be honest."

"Hehe, thanks Tisha. I'm just working really hard now so when sophomore year comes around, I can relax a bit. Eeeeexcept.. I still have to take a bunch of APs so I can get valedictorian.. and get good scores.." Shelly dropped her head and shoulders in defeat. "When's winter break again..?"

"Like three more months."

"Auuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh."

"No worries though, probably after November or mid December, the teachers start getting a little more lenient. Especially Thanksgiving break, can't forget that either."

Shelly softly smiled at the remembrance of Thanksgiving break.

"Right.. Thanks Tisha."

"Oooo! Have you heard? Goob and Glisten are together!! They're kinda cutee!!"

"Really? Goob and Glisten? Honestly they're nice for each other. I've seen them together sometimes, Goob is so sweet."

"He's so nice. One time, I was cleaning late and I was trying to dust this one vent, then Goob suddenly grabbed me and lifted me! Such a sweetheart. " Tisha paused. "Unlike someone..." Tisha muffled.

"People don't give Goob enough credit sometimes. He's very smart. "

Tisha then felt her phone vibrate from getting a text message.

It was from Teagan, the text read:

"Teagan: hiii, was wondering if you're free? me, cosmo, goob, and poppy are gonna go outside n have a tea party? was wondering if you wanted to join us? shelly is invited too ofc 💝"

Tisha's face lit up.

"Shelly, Teagan invited us to a tea party at the usual spot outside, wanna come?" Tisha asked.

"Sure! Sounds fun!"

After Shelly finished gathering a small stack of fairly thick books, she went up to the librarian to check them out.

"Hey, I got the books. You ready to go?" Shelly said, walking up to Tisha who was still sitting down, scrolling on her phone.

"Yup! Lets go."

Tisha offered to carry Shelly's books in her tote bag, in which she gratefully accepted. She then got up from the table and pushed the chair back in and then walked out the library with Shelly.

The two promptly headed outside the building, almost immediately spotting Teagan's party sitting on a blanket that was light yellow with a white square net pattern.

"Hey!!!" Shelly and Tisha excitedly waved.

The group waved back and said their own version of "hi".

Teagan was wearing flared jeans with black and white Nike dunks, a black crop top with two gold necklaces with one that has an initial that can't be read from a far. As well a denim jacket that was only worn on her sleeves, with the rest of it draping off her shoulders. Goob was wearing a tan short sleeved hoodie with baggy jeans and white high top AirForce ones. Poppy was wearing low waisted jeans with converse sneakers that had many permanent doodles on the toe vamp of the shoe, a gray zip-up hoodie with a Spiderman design on the back as well as a white t-shirt under it.

"Hi Shelly! How are you?" Goob excitedly said while pulling her in for a hug.

"Hi Goob! I'm doing good! How are you?" Shelly responded, slightly muffled in Goob's fur.

"I'm doing great! Thanks for asking Shelly! Also I love your outfit! You know, I think you'd really get along with Glisten! He loves that kind of stuff."

"Aww! Thanks, Goob! And I think I will! By the way, how are you guys?"

"Haha, well you know, he's very nice. Spending time with him makes me very happy. Plus, we get to do makeovers all the time! Until I keep finding glitter in my fur a few days later.. ALSOOOO-!!"

Goob ran up to Tisha and picked her up in a hug while twirling around.

"HII TISHA!!"

"G-Goob!! Hi!!" Tisha nervously said while being twirled. "PLEASE let me go.."

"Sorry! I got excited! How are you Tisha? You're always so busy!"

"Well I wouldn't be as busy without everyone causing a mess!"

"Good thing I don't!"

"Goob, you shed."

"I WHAT?!"

"Uh, nevermind! I didn't say anything- Haha..."

Tisha then patted down her arms and legs, confirming her comment even more that Goob's fur may have even gotten on her.

"I got your favorites." Teagan said while patting down on a blanket, signifying Shelly and Tisha to sit down.

Teagan then poured coffee with an almost concerning amount of caffeine into a fancy teacup that nobody knows how she always has.

She went ahead and handed the cup to Tisha. She then poured a cup of Strawberry-Kiwi Arizona Iced Tea and handed it to Shelly.

We don't question where or how she gets the drinks, and how she always has a party sized tea set. Everyone just made the conclusion that she just has hammer space. (whatever its a dandys world fic im writing i can do what i want 😭💔💔)

"So, how are you Shelly, really?" Teagan softly asked.

"Ah! Doing good.. well sorta-ish!"

"Sorta-ish? What's wrong?"

"I've been very stressed lately- just a lot on my mind at the moment."

"You wanna talk about it?"

"It's okay! I'm dealing with it better now."

Shelly then sat down, crossed legged, onto the blanket. Teagan than playfully rubbed Shelly's knees.

"I'm always here for you if you need it."

"Thanks Teagan. That means a lot."

The group made nice conversation for about 30 minutes or so, until an unexpected rainfall poured vigorously onto the five.

"Shit- We gotta go!" Poppy said, with panic.

"Wait- where'd you guys go?" Goob shouted.

The fog that formed from the mist of the rain as well as the gray clouds shielding the sun, quickly covered everyone. The only thing anyone could see was the silhouette of their friends.

"Shelly! Where are you?" Tisha shouted. "I'm gonna help Teagan pick up, I'll see you inside, okay?!"

"Okay!" Shelly responded.

While Shelly was about to run back into the building, she heard a familiar "-Zzst- -BZT-" faintly in the background.

The Ammonite stopped in her tracks, she then decided to turn around to investigate the sound.  Almost absolutely certain to know where the sound is originating from.

After about a minute of searching, her suspicions were immediately proven correct.

Vee.

Vee was sitting under a small roof, knees up and arms huddled around them.

Shelly then emerged from the fog, right in front of the robot. She stared at Vee for a moment, concerned but still bothered.

Vee then broke the uncomfortable silence.

"..You're drenched." Vee said.

"I'm drenched, but I'll live."

Vee wasn't sure if Shelly said that in a way that if any more water gotten into Vee's circuitry she would die, unlike her. However, she wasn't bothered enough to ask.

Shelly then slowly lifted a foot, almost about to turn heel to not offer the gameshow host more pity. Shelly hasn't forgotten their conversation from this morning. In fact, it had been bothering her all day. But, she has more self respect then to constantly sell herself to someone she knows doesn't like her.

As she was about to abandon Vee in the rain, a comment from the lime robot had stopped her.

"You were -BZZTT- right." Vee quietly said.

Shelly halted and turned to look at her, raising an eyebrow. She knows what Vee is implying, but wants her to say it herself.

However Vee caught onto this act. Vee was in the middle of a balancing scale, wondering if she should maintain her pride, or try a knack at being.. vulnerable.

"I don't. Intentionally do it."

The rain seemingly got louder.

"I'm very.. limited.. when it comes to emotional tasks like these. So, I apologize for my words earlier."

Shelly then let out a sigh as she then sat next to Vee.

"I meant what I said."

"I know."

"But.. I think I was projecting a little."

Vee then turned to Shelly in confusion.

"Just the pushing people away part.. that's all."

The stormy clouds continued to cover the sun, dense enough to initiate a soft glow from Vee's screen.

The ambience felt dark and strong. As if this moment was meant to happen.

As if it was staged..

Connie and Gigi laughed in the background knowing they stole Boxten's umbrella and convinced Teagan to have a tea party as soon as they spotted Vee outside with Boxten.

The only thing the mischievous duo was betting on was the usual inaccuracy of the weather report. In which, betting on all black played off!

"LOOK, GIGI. I TOLD YOU.. ITS... WORKING.." Connie excitedly said while watching from a second floor window.

"MWEHEHEHEHE. Connie you genius! At least I have this nice umbrella I can add to my collection now.."

"H-hey!" Boxten nervously shouted.

Connie and Gigi snapped their heads to the slightly drenched nervous Box in front of them.

"I'm not gonna question why you have my umbrella.. BUT. Can I please have it back?? Vee is still outside with the rain, and I have to get it to her before she short circuits..!"

Connie then looked at Gigi. They know that if Boxten runs away now, he'll just get another umbrella and possibly thwart the plan. So the next best course of action was to delay him as much as possible.

"Hm.. Nice offer.. Let me sleep on it though." Connie responded. "WAITTT- But.. Hmm.. Gigi what do you think?"

"I'd have to get back to you in four to five business days. Have you tried turning it off and on again?" Gigi questioned.

"WHAT ARE YOU EVEN TALKING ABOUT??" Boxten shouted, very much confused.

"Look, Box, I'm just sayin'.. Have you tried the new waterproof method?"

"What method???"

"THE method."

"Wait, you don't know the waterproof method Boxten?" Connie questioned.

"I have NO idea what you're talking about."

As Connie and Gigi were distracting Boxten, Shelly and Vee continued their waterlogged conversation.

Shelly then took out a pair of the same wired earphones from this morning. Shelly then took her phone, struggling to use it from large amount of water droplets resting on the screen. She then smudged the water off and plugged the earphones in.

"I can't entirely blame your behavior, because in a way, we are one of the same. I guess." Shelly softly said.

"I-"

"I still don't like you? Was that what you were going to say?" Shelly cut Vee off.

"No. I was going to say that I don't want to be hard to love. So I'll -ZZT- give it a try." Vee's voice glitched.

Vee said while putting her hand out to be given the earphone aux. Shelly then unplugged it from her phone and handed her the aux for her to plug into under her head.

"The Archer, please." Shelly said.

Vee nodded as they played "The Archer" by Taylor Swift.

The lyrics stabbed through the doomed pair like knives, twisting it omni-directionally.

As the song neared its end. Vee's voice tore through the loud rushing of the rain.

"Does this mean we're friends?"

"Well. We shared The Archer. So that means we're something worse."

"I see."

Chapter Text

What the moment felt like hours, only lasted a realistic twenty two minutes.

Vee's pride felt jagged and week.  She subconsciously kept ignoring the anti-virus software alerts that were burning up her circuitry. In fact, the current viruses that were infiltrating her systems had an unique name.

"Anxiety"

"Longing"

"Envy"

"Vulnerability"

The concept of emotions that fall under these umbrella terms were such a foreign concept to the robot, that her systems were unknowingly flagging it as a virus. For the fifteen years that she had been enabled to be, she was repressing them. Flagging them as threats. Yet, due to the administrative commands her creators put in place she isn't allowed to neutralize said threats.

If these "threats" were so dangerous to her system, why did it feel so good to allow it? That's like textbook dictionary definition of addiction.

Nonetheless, there were more pressing matters at hand. It was only a matter of time before the moisture and mist started seeping through the joints of her mechanical body. Eventually frying her.

Vee would rather not experience an untimely death, however, one nervous purple box in a drenched black hoodie with a plastic bag decided to prevent this conclusion.

After being distracted for a grand total of eighteen minutes by Gigi and Connie, he was able to finally retrieve his umbrella.

"Oh my god, Vee! I'm so sorry! When I went to get my umbrella Gigi and Connie were talking about some waterproof method thing and then they were saying some stuff about business days??? I don't know it took me a while to get it back. " Boxten frantically said while approaching the two Toons with an open umbrella.

"It's okay. Where are the two now?" Vee solemnly said.

"I don't know, they left after whispering to each other about something. Probably to go get high or something."

Vee digitalized a more disgusting look of her face at the possibility.

"Annyways.. Let me take you to your room it's the least I could do."

"Thanks."

Boxten then crouched down to where Vee was sitting and placed the umbrella in her hand.  He then reached into the plastic bag he was wearing, revealing an oversized unzipped jacket. Vee placed her hand out, signaling assistance for Boxten to help her up, in which he did.

As she held the umbrella, the box placed the draped the dry jacket over her shoulders.

Shelly watched, closely.

She's never observed something more carefully in her entire life. Suddenly, everything seemed slow.

She watched Boxten slowly wrap his arm around her neck, imagining after-images as he pulled her closer into the umbrella.

Why did this not feel good? Her heart dropped, but why? Watching him plant his arm around her. It was inducive. It hurt so bad for no reason.

But she has a boyfriend.

They're not even together.

She's just lonely. Right..

Time shortly resumed back to it's original state once Shelly had been snapped out of the crushing reality she just spaced herself out to.

"What are you waiting for? C'mon." Vee suddenly said.

"What? You're asking me?" Shelly questioned.

The gesture was unfathomable, really. Offering an umbrella that very much is the only reason why Vee is standing right before her. Shelly watched her in almost total dismay as her screen flickered with her monotonous facial features. Boxten softly dropped the arm he had around Vee shortly after. Implying further that he had no problem in offering  help.

Suddenly, the sounds of the raindrops collaborated to make the crashing of droplets landing on the ground more deafening, almost numbing.

"..Yes I'm talking to you."

"I-"

"I mean, we can't just leave you here Shelly. It's pouring. You'll get sick." Boxten added.

"I guess." Shelly said, barely louder than the squeak of a mouse.

The purple box then came from under the umbrella, and offered a hand to the shell in front of him.

Shelly cautiously pushed her hand out, taking his.

He promptly lifted her off the ground. Vee immediately walked towards Shelly, trying to get the two of them under the umbrella at the same time.

"Thank you." Shelly whispered.

It was hard to fit three people under one umbrella.

Boxten was in the back while Shelly and Vee were together in the front, shoulder-to-shoulder.

Despite being almost completely drenched, Shelly felt warm. She didn't know why. Probably Vee's heating functions.

But Vee didn't have her heater on?

Shelly and Vee treaded carefully. The fossil even subconsciously tried synchronizing her walking cycle with the robot next to her. Almost in fear that if she steps a second faster, Vee will short circuit and fry right in front of her.

Their hands constantly brushed against each other. Not long enough for Vee to deem it with any significance, but long enough for Shelly to painfully notice.

Long enough for Shelly to note every single detail in her mind.

Vee's hands were moderate sized. Each joint were being separated with visible robotic sections, in which she usually covers with black gloves. Except for some reason she didn't wear them today. Her hands weren't wet, but moist.

Her fingers twitched every so often, due to some unknown reason. These mysterious twitches didn't help this situation though.

The upper joints of her middle and ring fingers twitched towards Shelly's knuckles. If Shelly didn't know any better, she would've thought Vee was trying to hold her hand.

But she has a boyfriend.

They silently made way to the closest entrance of campus, Boxten going ahead to hold the door open for the two.

They finally entered the campuses building.

Vee slid the umbrella's mechanism down towards the handle, unfurling the umbrella.

However, the gameshow host's facial interface suddenly began flickering even more.

"-BZZT- ZZTT-" Vee suddenly blurt.

"Hey you oka-" Boxten said, putting a hand on her shoulder to turn her towards him.

Vee's interface went completely offline. A blank slate. Nothing but Boxten and Shelly's reflection being the only visible image on the matte black screen.

The lime robot started tilting towards the ground but before she had fallen over, Boxten braced her.

"Wh- Vee?! What's going on? Are you alright?" Boxten said in a quite but panicked manner. "What's going on? Talk to me!"

The purple box looked and checked the robot's head, even allowing himself to take off her wool coat that she had on.

Some of the water had sneaked through her clothes, even seeping through one of her component joins. Specifically by back base of her neck as well as barely noticeable droplets on her screen.

"Fuck.. Shelly, could you help me bring her?" Boxten said nervous but still trying to stay focused.

"Of course, I got you."

Shelly went ahead and pulled Vee from Boxten. Impressively hauling her into a piggy back.

Boxten placed Vee's arms around Shelly's neck, trying to give her extra support as to make sure she doesn't fall.

Boxten then directed Shelly as she carried the gameshow host to the same room she saw Boxten and Vee at the other day.

This must be some sort of hang out room for them.

Boxten then took out a group of keys, flipping through each one, before finding the right key which unlocked the door.

The room was the size of a small classroom.

It almost looked like a game room.

"P-please place her on the couch." Boxten said while hurrying over to the retro computer and started inputting commands.

Shelly then placed Vee on the couch, sitting her upright. The fossil had then withdrawn from the lime robot to observe the room more closely.

The room was white and had black, gray, and white tiles. There was a gray couch with two noticeable pillows, one purple and one green while the other pillows were white and gray. It also had a soft and beige heated blanket that rested neatly folded on the arm rest. This was the couch Shelly saw the two sitting on.

The couch had a coffee table as well as black TV table top dresser in front of it which of course, held the TV. There were many contents inside of the of the dresser, such as just about every console ever. A GameCube, Nintendo 3Ds, a WiiU, a Wii, Nintendo Switch, a Nintendo Switch 2, an Xbox360, an Xbox Series X, a PlayStation Five, and a Steam Deck. The only visible consoles were the ones most recently used, which were the PlayStation Five and the Nintendo Switch 2.

Two PlayStation Five controllers also accompanied the coffee table, one green and one purple. The green one looked much fancier than its companion. It had intricate designs that referenced Vee's Gameshow, such as a joycon cover had an icon of a green TV head with only a visible smirk and its iconic antennas. The designs on the controller seemed to be hand painted. The designs were all references to Vee of course, with her microphone tail, her antennas, "correct" emoji symbols, and even a hand painted green bowtie in the middle of the controller. Meanwhile the purple controller just had The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild joycon cover patterns, with the rest of the controller being a light purple.

Under the coffee table, there were a wide selection of games that had their unique colors symbolizing which console it was compatible to, all color coded.

In the corner of the room, there's an old fashion computer that sits on a brown desk, hooked up to a seemingly high end server shelf right behind it. Boxten was currently typing on it's keyboard as lines of green code filled its screen.

More closer to the door there's a long counter with white cabinets and a gray top that wrapped around the wall with as well as another square counter in the middle, serving as some sort of dinner table, judging by the two chairs right in front of it. The counter that wrapped around the wall had many kitchen amenities on it. A mini fridge, a microwave, a blender, a portable burner, a coffee machine, and a metal solid green cup that had a piece of paper taped to it reading "COOLANT CUP, don't drink you'll die"

There were most likely even more things in the cabinets but Shelly didn't want to intrude on their privacy any more than she feels she already has.

The fossil then turned around, wanting to see if there were any updates on Vee's condition.

"Wh-WHAT-" Shelly yelled.

Boxten was crouched infront of Vee, hands under her shirt, trying to reach into her back.

"UHM-! WAIT-" Boxten yelled in fear back, almost as if he was caught doing something sinful. "IT'S NOT WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE."

"I mean..! Uhm! It's okay- I don't judg-"

"STOP. THIS IS ALREADY EMBARASSING."

"BOXTEN."

"SHELLY. PLEASE."

"WHAT COULD YOU POSSIBLY BE DOING."

"JUST GIVE ME A SECOND."

"WHAT THE HELLY."

Boxten, still extremely flustered, then took his hands out of her shirt and grabbed a cord. He titled Vee forward until he snapped back to reality.

"UHM. S-Shelly." Boxten said while coming up from his crouch and walking up to Shelly, putting his hands into a clasped prayer gesture. "Please. PLEASE. What I'm about to do is going to look so bad on my part, one MENTION of this would have me dead, gone, buried, probably doxed on twitter, AND BEING GLORIFIED BY TRUE CRIME PODCASTS WHERE THEY QUOTE ON QUOTE USE FAMILY FRIENDLY TERMS SUCH AS "unaliving!" TO BYPASS THE FILTER TO SPREAD. MY. STORY."

"OKAY! Okay! Just wh- what are you even trying to do??!"

"Look. I think the water accidentally might have seeped into Vee's cognitive functions, nothing irreversible, but-"

"But???"

"BUT. In order for me to make sure theres no permanent damage, I have to input this plug which connects to the computer which gives me a diagnostic. Whoever designed her created her in such a sophisticated and complex manner that in case for this to happen, they essentially made a safe spot in her exoskeleton to where you can run a proper diagnostic without the total risk of killing her."

"And..?"

"....the plug is in the middle of her back. which means I have to... uhm..

"Oh."

"...I'm gonna kill myself..."

"So why were you feeling her up earlier??"

"I WAS TRYING TO PUT IN THE PLUG WITHOUT.. TAKING HER SHIRT OFF. I- I'M MUCH MORE CONSIDERATE THAN THAT."

"Ohhhhhh.. Well, to be honest, as long as your intentions aren't bad I'm sure she wouldn't care."

"Still.. It just doesn't feel right. I was already exploding inside when I grabbed the plug and looked at her."

"Boxten.. Be honest. Do you have a crush on her?"

Boxten immediately locked in.

"What? No."

The lack of hesitation and the way the color faded back into Boxten's face was probably the funniest and most gobsmacking thing Shelly has faced in her entire life.

"Huh?? REALLY..?"

"What makes you think that?"

"I mean.. The way you defend her, wrapping your arm around her.. always hanging out with herrr..."

"Well.. To be honest. I don't really have many people I can talk to. I have a few people sure, but.." Boxten then put started playing with the strings of his zip up. "I- guess she's very.. accepting when it comes to my weird hobbies. That's why I'm quick to defend her because I know she can be a bit dismissive but she genuinely listens to what I have to say." Boxten then walks over to her and rubs her shoulder. "It's nice having someone who genuinely listens to what you say. Besides I have a crush on somebody else."

"I see.. I guess that's understandable. I'd like someone to actually listen to me. Well, Tisha does. So I'm grateful for her. Wait you have a wh-"

"Nothing! I said nothing!" Boxten said while bolting up from the couch and walking towards the cabinet.

"You have a crush on somebody elseeee?"

"N-NOTHING." Boxten nervously opened one of the counter cabinets and took out a cup of instant noodles. "A-Anyway, if you could do me this big favor. All you have to do is put the plug in her back for me.. Okay..?"

"Hmm.. Sure. But on one condition."

"W-what is it?"

"You tell me who you have a crush on."

Boxten squeezed the cup of instant noodles that he had just filled with water in fear.

"I- Well... UHM!"

"I guess you're gonna have to do it then.." Shelly dramatically shrugs and sighs.

"Okay! Okay! I will.." He said while putting the cup of noodles in the microwave, setting it for three minutes.

"Alrighty! Look away."

Boxten then stiffly turned his back, front facing the microwave.

Shelly then went over to Vee and gazed at her for a moment. She took a deep breath before feeling her shoulders a bit before slipping her hands under her shirt. "Okay.."

She then carefully but swiftly took her shirt off, revealing just a normal black bra. Shelly honestly wasn't bothered by the sight, they both change in the locker rooms and they're both girls. So it didn't really matter to her. She'd actually much rather prefer she would do it as opposed to Boxten.

"Where's the plug?"

"The black o-one on the floor."

"Okay."

Shelly then reached over to the floor right next to her, hand still on Vee's shoulder, and grabbed the plug.

She then placed the plug onto the couch. Shelly then peeked over Vee's back to see where exactly the plug would be, luckily just below the bra clasp, so she's not actually taking it off.

The Ammonite then inserted the plug into her back, initiating a loud whirl from the retro computer in the corner, signifying the connection was made.

Shelly then grabbed one of the blankets on the other side of the couch, laid Vee on her side, then placed the shirt over her chest, then the jacket, and then the blanket.

"Okay it's done."

Vee laid soundly on her side, with the thick black cord peaking through her back.

Boxten then nervously turns around, lets out a sigh of relief, and walks over back to the retro computer.

He then types in " perfmon/ report " into the console.

[VEE VERSION 1 INCAPICITATION DETECTED.]

[INITIATING FILL IN PROTOCAL]

[RELEASING MINI VEE ONE]

"...what." Boxten whispers.

Suddenly a miniature version of Vee emerges from under the couch. They look exactly like Vee but more cartoony. A lot more cartoony.

"Boxten, I'm either having a really bad acid trip or am I looking at a mini Vee."

"I.. I'm so confused.

The minature Vee stood at a high 3'5.

height chart for reference because i love being ultra specific( height chart because i love being ultra specific idk why)

"Uhm. So what are you?" Boxten nervously crouched down.

"[𝚜𝚑𝚞𝚝 𝚞𝚙]"

"Hah. She's just like her." Shelly softly blurts.

" Sorry Vee... "

" [ 𝚜𝚘𝚛𝚛𝚢 𝚅𝚎𝚎 ] "

" You guys are like siblings fighting in front of your mother." Shelly giggled.

The paleontologist then crouched down, and then pet Mini Vee One but carefully avoiding her antennas.

"You're very cute Mini Vee One. I'm sure you'll do great with your first day on the job."

" [ . . . ] "

" [ 𝚂𝙷𝚄𝚃 𝚄𝙿. 𝚋𝚞𝚝 𝚝𝚑𝚊𝚗𝚔 𝚢𝚘𝚞.. 𝙱𝚄𝚃 𝚂𝙷𝚄𝚃 𝚄-]

"Yeah yeah an adorable one at that."

Boxten squinted his eyes as he stood up while watching Shelly's teasing at Mini Vee One.

"Wouldn't this mean she technically finds Vee cute because this is literally her but shorter??" Boxten thought.

He then looked at Shelly and gave her a "I know what you are" look. He then quickly neutralized the thought because:

"But she has a boyfriend."

 !!!!! GARDENVIEW HIGH SPECIAL !!!!!!

FUN FACTS

Vee Version 1: Has subconsciously broadcasted her daydreams on her screen, completely unaware. She only found out when Boxten asked her why she was dreaming of being in a bubble bath filled with plastic ducks.

Shelly Fossilian: She is a terrible liar. She could sound convincing through voice, but she has many tells. Her tail twitches a certain way, a very specific tug at her necklace, and fiddling with her hands!

Dandicus Dancifer: Dandy is one of those guys who say "heh my music taste is really niche and underground" and listen to Alex G and Lana Del Rey.

Astro Novalite: Astro hates clothes that are slightly revealing, due to the possibility that his body looks like the cosmos.

Sprout Seedly: Sprout spams this image.

Boxten the Music Box: Boxten loves to consume media, specifically fictional media. He extremely enjoys watching anime, playing video games, and collecting figurines/ manga. His current favorite anime's are Mob Psycho 100 and A Silent Voice.

Tisha the Tissue Box: Despite popular belief, Tisha's dream job isn't to be some type of maid. She would love to pursue in the medical field as a nurse or surgeon. Not only because of how clean they have to keep their workspace, she finds the amount of precision, expertise, and human body fascinating as a whole. She would be combining her two favorite things in the whole world in one job: Helping people, and aiding in keeping things tidy.

Goob the Fluffy Craft: One of Goob's favorite hobbies is playing the "Operation" game board. He says it helps him better control his hands and doesn't punish him so hard whenever he makes a mistake because of it.

Teagan the Teacup: Teagan's favorite fashion trend is 2000s clothing. She also enjoys 2000s media in general. Her favorite movie is Jennifer's Body. For the reason of "I don't think her motive was wrong!"

Shrimpo the Shrimp: Shrimpo is the captain of the football team, despite his grades being completely mediocre the only reason why they keep him on the team is because he has been carrying their past four games.

Connie the Ghost: Connie knows all the tea and gossip around Gardenview High. She loves to play matchmaker with the other toons on purpose. She locked Dandy and Astro in a closet, and they suspiciously came back closer than before. She has also pushed Cosmo off the stairs at such a perfect trajectory, he landed straight into Sprout's hand. She also have took things from Sprout and Astro's room that correlated to each other, forcing them to talk and try it find it together.

Gigi the Gachapon: Gigi also has comical hammerspace. If she wants to cause chaos, sometimes she'll take out a jackhammer from her head, plug it in, and let it run wild.

Poppy the Bubble: Her head sometimes changes color based on the liquid she has drunk. Brown from when she drinks coke, white from when she drinks milk, and etc.. She also loves consuming glitter because the light reflects off her bubble and makes her a portable disco ball!

Chapter Text

Shelly and Boxten had finally gotten a handler, specifically Veronica and Devan.

The two were educated on Vee's mechanics and coding. Veronica much more than Devan, however, Devan followed Veronica to discuss something in the room while the green handler issued repairs. Vee didn't trust anyone except her to make any physical adjustments.

As the two handlers entered the room, they immediately gazed upon the gameshow host's seemingly lifeless body and Mini Vee One.

"Uh, what's this?" Devan questioned, almost with attitude.

"Oh! Uhm. This is Mini Vee One, she deploys whenever Vee is "incapacitated" to fill in.." Boxten answered sheepishly.

"Ah, well. She'll go back to wherever she came from in a moment. Veronica will have her up and running in no time. Right? "

Veronica slightly flinched at the sudden change of demeanor from Devan, almost nervous at the fact that he put such emphasis on the sentence. That his request isn't encouragement, but more of a demand.

"Y-yeah! Of course." The green handler mumbled as she got straight to work on the console.

"Speaking of which, I just remembered I have to talk to Veronica personally." Devan suddenly blurted.

"Huh? OH! Yeah o-of course! We'll be on our way.." Boxten said while grabbing Mini Vee One from under the shoulders and nodding to Shelly.

" [𝙷𝙴𝚈! 𝚐𝚎𝚝 𝚢𝚘𝚞𝚛 𝚑𝚊𝚗𝚍𝚜 𝙾𝙵𝙵 𝙾𝙵 𝙼-] " The mini robot said while being forcibly exited out of the room.

The door softly shut, thanks to the door stopper.

Veronica then propped Vee up on the couch, inspecting the plug on her back.

"Hey uhm, Deva-"

"Veronica. What is the malfunction count?"

"...Fourth."

"Four times you say? And how far are we into the school year?"

"Three months in."

"Yeah."

"Look- I'm sure I could-!"

"You do understand that these were only "FIXABLE" malfunctions right? That they were mostly display functions?"

"....Yes."

"What happens if her coding corrupts, huh? That her personality does a complete one-eighty?"

"Devan, that can't happen. Her priorities and protocols-"

"I don't give a fuck about her priorities and protocols, she's completely outdated. You can't even make her water proof?? How much money did Arthur and Delilah spend on her again?"

"It's not just that-"

"Not to mention her durability. God, Veronica. If I had the say, this is probably your worse work. Ever."

"...."

"Look, did you get the plans I sent you?"

"I did. I can't approve them."

"It's just an upgrade. She'd be brand new, a NEW Vee Version Two."

"..You'd be wiping her flat. I can't approve of that."

"Oh for fucks sake Veronica, LOOK AT HER."

"Devan, please."

"You do realize the only "impressive" feat about her is the fact that she's AI right? She's not like Sprout, who is overprotective and kind and always looks out for others. She isn't like Astro who dedicates his time making sure all the Toons have good dreams. She isn't like Shelly who specializes in encouragement and friendliness. She isn't like Dandy, who's the perfect all rounder. If you think she's special because of her entertainment factor, then you're completely wrong. All the other mains are completely fine on their own."

"That's not true-"

"Oh? It's not? Want me to elaborate on her physical capabilities too?"

"No I'd prefer if you didn't-"

"Sprout could run for DAYS. He has impeccable stamina, the ability to do thousands of things at once without getting tired. Astro is stealthy and soft. He may sneak up on people by accident, but his presence alone would make the kids feel at ease. Shelly is powerful, her genuine strength can't be outmatched by any Toon here. She uses ALL of her strength to help out her peers, WHILE PROMOTING GOOD VALUES. And Dandy? Do I even have to talk about Dandy? Because he could do it all."

Veronica's eyes swelled up as she typed into the console.

"What can Vee do? You act like her knowledge isn't just a google search away. That she's not just a stuck-up version of ChatGPT."

".. I fixed her facial interface, I put a timer that she'll be online in about thirty minutes or so.

"We'll continue this in my office. Let's go."

Devan and Veronica shorty left the room after.

Silence creeped in. The uncomfortable kind, the kind Vee hated so much.

Her facial interface immediately went online as soon as they left.

[ERROR]

[LOOK AT ME]

[LOOK AT ME]

[LOOK AT ME]

Vee's screen glitched profusely to the words.

At the moment, all she could do was grip onto the sides of her shoulders and shake.

"Not again. I can't."

One month ago.

It was fairly late, seven thirty to be exact.

Vee had just finished on some mechanical upgrades on herself. An upgrade that stabilizes her joints better, it took a while but it was worth it.

As she walked down the hall she heard talking. Not much talking, more yelling.

This piqued the interest of the robot. Who was yelling? At this hour more specifically.

Vee dialed up her hearing sensitivity to try and eavesdrop on the conversation.

"Look! Arthur and Delilah want to upgrade her, I'll be sending the plans for it in a few weeks time."

Upgrade? No. That can't be.

"But the trivia games? The prizes! She's almost as recognizable as Dandy!"

"That doesn't matter. If she is going to have constant malfunctions like this, she's more good to us as scrap. Just think about it. "Vee Version Two." She'll be better, and more efficient!"

That's all it took.

Just those words.

"Vee Version Two."

They echoed in her mind.

Over and over.

Vee back peddled from the door she heard the conversation from, almost terrified. Her antennas continuously twitched as it felt like her ram was being overloaded.

"-BZZT-"

Vee then walked the dark halls of Gardenview High, unaware of everything around her. All she kept thinking about was:

"I'm more than my code."

"Why me?"

"No other Toon goes through this."

"What will change?"

"Are they wiping me?"

"You can't do that."

"What about my friends?"

"What will happen next?"

Vee nervously made way back to her room, but she didn't notice the attempted confrontation of the Tissue box she had just waltz right past.

"Hey, I just cleaned that! What are you doing? Are you even listening?"

But it didn't matter, nothing mattered in this moment.

"..Asshole." Tisha mumbled as she watched Vee stomp right on the puddle and even making slight sludges from her shoes onto the floor.

But that didn't matter, did it?

Who cares about a slight mess on the floor, would it all matter if she was going to be upgraded? Would it all matter if she was about to get completely wiped?

Her work? Her grades? Her status? Her friends?

Oh..

Her gameshow.

Her beloved gameshow.

Who was she without it?

The prizes, the trivia, that stupid smug smile she wore whenever someone got a question wrong. The way the audience showered the room with excitement, and it was only a few months into her debut and she's already gained so much traction to the real world!

Imagine how much recognition she would get when Arthur and Delilah take her into Gardenview and give her real funding.

Just imagine!

A real stage!

An actual film crew!

Better quality...

Everything would be so much-

Yet that all quickly became a pipe dream.

She wouldn't be able to enjoy it, because she'd be wiped.

A more obedient AI.

Vee Version Two.

Vee silently sat at the couch as she slowly slipped her shirt back on.

What now?

She has been trying. Really trying.

She didn't mean to malfunction, she just wanted to give Boxten some company.

It's not like it mattered now, the plans were set.

Vee Version Two was confirmed.

Unless she could figure something out, to give herself some type of mechanical and software update. The plans were in motion.

The gameshow host erupted from the couch. The party.

She could maybe show off her updates there! The staff will be there.

She has to upgrade as quick as possible. Her structure can wait, she just needs better software.

Boxten, Shelly, and Mini Vee One roamed the hallways.

Halfway through their walk Boxten considered if the tiny robot was uncomfortable. He then switched from holding her under the shoulders, to even cradling her like a baby.

As much as she didn't want to admit, Mini Vee One liked being babied.

The silence wasn't so much as uncomfortable, almost waiting for someone to invite themselves into the conversation.

"What do you think happens next?" Shelly suddenly questioned.

"I'm not sure. Before we left I heard them say she was going to be online in about thirty minutes or so.  That's good news at least."

"Yeah.. I got a little worried."

"Hm? Why?"

"That she might never wake up, I don't know."

"No offense, but since when did you care? I thought you guys had beef or something."

"...Just because I may not like her doesn't mean I still don't care for her wellbeing."

"So, does that mean you guys are friends now? I mean, I saw you two sitting together in the rain. What happened anyways?"

"We had an argument this morning, a pretty bad one at that. I saw her sitting there in the a rain, alone, and almost ignored her. But then she suddenly called out to me, so I let myself stay."

"What do you mean called out?"

"I said some really mean things to her. She told me I was right."

"Huh.. She must like you then."

"HUH- WHAT..?-"

"What? As a friend?"

"Yeah! Of course-!"

"I meant that it's rare for her to express stuff like that y'know? I think you guys should get to know each other more."

"I do! She just pushes me away."

"When all this blows over, I'll ask her okay?"

"I'd love that. Thank you so much, Boxten."

"Of course."

"Also, don't think I forgot. So who is it? Who's the lucky lady?"

"I-?!?! UHM!"

"C'mon! You told me you'd tell me!"

"...Tisha."

"I'm sorry, what was that?"

"YOU HEARD ME."

"NOO I DIDN'T!!"

"YES YOU DID."

"I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT!!"

Boxten covers his face with his hands in embarrassment.

"..I just think she's very pretty, okay..?" Boxten mumbles even more. "I also like her attention to detail to everything. She's always so precise with her work, no stone left unturned type of thing."

"AWWW YOU GUYS WOULD BE SUCH A CUTE COUPLE!! I'd love to set you guys up one day!

"STOP THIS IS ALREADY EMBARASSING ENOUGH."

"IT'S NOT!! I'M ENJOYING EVERY SECOND OF THIS."

Suddenly as the two were talking they heard another conversation from the corner

Boxten then turned to Shelly whispering "Is that Sprout and Astro?"

"I think so! Let's go talk to th-"

"Sprout, I'm not sure if it's working out."

Shelly had never stopped in her tracks faster.

"Astro, you never make up your mind. I thought you two were good?"

"We are. It's just- I don't know. I think it's me."

"How so?"

"I mean. Shelly's nice. She's encouraging, soft spoken and smart. I just don't really.. like her how I used to."

Boxten then turned to look at Shelly, who seemed to be in a trance. Her eyes were already flooding up with tears, turning red the longer she listens in on this conversation.

"C'mon, Shelly let's go-" Boxten whispered before cutting himself off before hearing one last thing.

"Then just break up with her, dude."

"I know, but I feel bad. Really bad. She deserves a lot more than I could give her. All because I'm stupid and I can't figure this stuff out."

"Hey, it's not your fault. If you ever need help figuring it out, I'm always here okay?"

"Thanks Sprout. That means a lot."

"Anytime."

The two finally turned the corner to see the three standing there.

"Oh! Hey, guys! I didn't-" Sprout said before getting cut off.

"..I-I need to use the bathroom. I'll catch you later, Boxten." Shelly said before scurrying right past Astro and Sprout.

"..Wait! Shelly can we tal-" Astro tried to get a word in, but then quickly realized Shelly wasn't listening as she turned the corner they just came out of.

The silence felt unbearable. A wave of guilt washed over Astro knowing he's delaying the news even further now.

A part of him wants to catch up to her, but then again.

He doesn't. He just watches as she sped walked away.

The half moon then looked at Sprout, wondering if she heard their conversation and that was why she left so abruptly. It was out of character for her to leave like that, but he couldn't think of any reason as to why.

She was always so excited to see him, she would've never left like that if nothing was wrong.

Luckily, Sprout distracted the conversation with a very valid concern.

"Was Vee always this short? And childlike?"

Mini Vee One's screen suddenly flashed online with the most disgusted and offended look on her face that anyone could possibly imagine. She acted as if Sprout just insulted her mother. Which in a way, he did.

"Ah- Well! How do I explain this-" Boxten tried explaining.

" [ 𝙵𝙸𝚁𝚂𝚃 𝚘𝚏 𝚊𝚕𝚕 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚌𝚞𝚗𝚝, 𝙸'𝚖 𝙼𝚒𝚗𝚒 𝚅𝚎𝚎 𝙾𝙽𝙴. 𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝚊𝚌𝚝𝚞𝚊𝚕 𝚅𝚎𝚎 𝚒𝚜 𝚋𝚊𝚌𝚔 𝚊𝚝 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚌𝚕𝚞𝚋𝚛𝚘𝚘𝚖. ] "

"Okay? Rude. So why are you here?"

"She's a fill in! Vee had to turn off for a bit because of water damage and it was unprecedented for when she'd return so- Mini Vee One here was expected to be here longer but I heard the handlers repaired her already.."

" [ 𝚢𝚎𝚊𝚑 𝚐𝚎𝚝 𝚕𝚘𝚜𝚝 𝚋𝚎𝚛𝚛𝚢-𝚋𝚘𝚢 ] "

"You're still calling me that?!"

"OKAY-! I just realized I should probably get her back now! Uh.. See you at the party, Sprout?"

" Sure, Boxten, Sure."

Boxten waltz straight past the duo, turning the opposite corner of Shelly to try and loop around the hallways back to the clubroom without seeming conspicuous.

It was hard keeping it together.

It wasn't just hard, it was impossible.

Her heart beat fast, faster than before.

Thoughts kept rushing into her mind. Shelly had a gut feeling.

She didn't want to be right. She's never wanted to be more wrong her entire life.

Why so soon? Everything was perfect?

Was it the way she talked, the way she laughed? How about her fashion taste? Maybe her interests?

Shelly begged for an answer. Anything. She just wanted to know what was wrong with her, so that maybe. Just maybe. She could fix it.

Maybe he could like her again.

Maybe it was her weight? Maybe she's not pretty enough?

Well to be fair, Shelly has been slacking a little bit. Putting a little less effort into appearance as the days go by... But they're barely even noticeable!

Maybe she didn't notice how bad she let it get?

The day isn't even over yet. It's still barely six.

Shelly trembled to her room, fidgeting and even dropping the keys to her room right in front of the lock.

The fossil finally entered her room, but the atmosphere didn't feel as peaceful as it did before.

It felt entrapping. Like the walls were closing in on her. Like every object in her room had eyes, and they were all just staring at her.

Shelly wrapped her arms around her, she felt her body shivering.

She glanced at the full body mirror in her room and could barely even look at herself.

The paleontologist softly walked over to it, turning it around, facing the wall.

Every mirror in her room was turned around. No reflections were allowed at this time.

What else could she do?

Shelly went into the bathroom with the lights off, not wanting to stare at her body any longer for when she changed back into her pajamas.

She then tragically flopped onto her bed, with no intention of getting up from it for a while.

The Ammonite suddenly remembered that she has to text Tisha back! She's probably worried, she hasn't seen her since the rain!

Shelly then grabbed her phone, and as it automatically turned on, it displayed the notifications she missed.

" 2 - Astro 💞 "

" 5 - tisha probably 😭🙏"

" 2 - Teagan "

" 1 - 111-???-??? "

Her iPhone gave Shelly a preview of Astro's message.

All it let her read was "I need to talk to you about something. It's about.." then it cuts off from there. Curse you Apple.

Shelly decided to reply to everyone except Astro, further delaying the inevitable.

She presses on Tisha's notification's first.

"shellyyy where'd you go??"

"i heard boxten got robbed by gigi"

"i think outdated tech is in the rain"

"u ok?"

"text me when you can"

Shelly couldn't help but feel warmhearted by how much Tisha cares. She's always glad to know she has her on her side.

"SO SORRY TISHA SO MUCH HAPPENED."

Tisha INSTANTLY replied.

"OMG?? LIKE WHAT?"

"OK. so i was walking back to the door entrance right and then i heard like glitching"

"uh huh? ima just wait for you to type the full paragraph"

"okok so basically i heard glitching in the rain right and then i was like brah it cant be and yes it infact CAN BE. i saw vee sitting by herself under some small corner just barely shielding her from the rain and when i walked over i i thought ya im not doin allat im gonnna go until she said. "you were right." and i was like WHAT? ME?? SHELLY FOSSILIAN?? and when i asked her what she meant she like apologized n stuff and gave me like slight insight to everything.. and so i sat down next to her and we shared headphones AGAIN. TISHA. WE LISTENED TO THE ARCHER. TOGETHER. IM SPIRALING."

It took Tisha a good minute to read everything.

"WHAT THE HELLLY?? so WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?? WHAT HAPPENED NEXT WHY WERE U IGNORING ME...??"

" I WASNT TRYING TO IGNORE YOU. AND THERES MORE."

"THERES MORE??"

"YES."

"WHAT COULDVE POSSIBLY HAPPENED"

"so basically. we sat there for a bit and then boxten comes up with an umbrella telling me how gigi and connie lowkey robbed him"

"HELP ME"

"and then him and vee went under the umbrella right and then SUDDENLY. vee turns around and looks at me and asks me if i want to go with her."

"did you just unlock a new vee dialogue. one thats not insensitive and fawking rude"

"HELPPP ME STOP."

"AM I WRONG??"

"NO.. NOT NECESSAIRLY."

"OKAY?? WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?"

"and so im like okay.. i'll go with you and then when we finally get inside, vee fucking dies"

"HUH??"

"HELP ME IM JOKING"

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN??"

"vee turned off because some of the water got into her 😭😭"

"HELP ME"

"me and boxten then took her to their clubhouse and MIND YOU THEIR CLUBHOUSE IS SO FANCY and nerdy ITS LIKE A WHOLE ASS GAMEROOM"

"TS PMO WDYM GAMEROOM??"

"they had these expensive ass consoles, A WHOLE TV, and more."

"what the hell"

"they probably got it from requests I DIDNT KNOW YOU COULD ASK FOR THAT MUCH. lowkey might do this next for us"

"AWW SHELLYYY ILYSMMM"

"ILYT QUEEN"

Shelly then placed her phone face down.

It was a lot to process at the moment.

Shelly laid curled up in her blanket, cold.

Every mirror that could possibly reflect the fabrications of her personality that she puts out there.

Every positive attitude she wants to keep up, she feels failing.

Except she missed one mirror.

A small lime green mirror on the counter?
