Love Always Ends in Tragedy

Summary:

Doctor Xiao Zhan, a well respected surgeon with many medical awards and the admiration of the surgical world is in the public Eye after an affair that turned sour and left his rival dead.

Chapter 1: Too Much love Kills

Accidents are like death. Waiting for us everywhere. Inevitable. Unavoidable. Plan as we might. They defy our planning.

 

 

“Dr. Xiao Zhan, you are under arrest for the murder of Wang Liying Née Zhao- “getting arrested at Liying’s funeral Infront of the attendees was not something Xiao Zhan anticipated, most importantly not Infront of Yibo. As his hands are being handcuffed, his eyes search worriedly for said man.

 

As his eyes find him, Yibo is staring back at Xiao with those piercing eyes and a rigid stance, bawling his hands into a fist so tight that his knuckles are turning white.

 

Xiao Zhan can already see the accusing in his eyes, shaking his head towards Yibo. He yells to him, “Yibo I can explain please! I didn’t want any of this to happen I swear. I never meant to hurt her you have to believe me.” As the detective takes him away, He keeps his gaze towards Yibo as he’s being led to the police car, he looks for some sort of sign or body language from Yibo that tells him that he at least listened to his pleas but he saw nothing in return… no expression… no signal… no mouthed words…. Not even a blink.

 

In the contrary all he sees is Yibo turning away and hugging his mother as he starts to sob, Xiao Zhan can tell as Yibo’s shoulders begin to shake violently in his mother’s comforting arms as she cries with him.

 

As the police car begins to drive away from the cemetery, Xiao Zhan cries as he sees the cemetery disappear from his view.

 

3 Hours Later

 

“Dr. Xiao this will move a long much faster if you tell us why you killed Mrs. Wang Liying.” Says the chief detective as he leans towards Xiao Zhan over the cold metal table.

 

Sighing in desperation Xiao Zhan looks down towards his hands that are cuffed to the cold metal table, as tears began to form again. How did he get here?  he was not a bad person; He was not a Murderer! His only crime was falling in love with a married man

A Year Ago

 

After a long shift at the hospital all Xiao Zhan wants to do is make tea and go to bed, as he gets off the elevator towards his apartment, he sees a bunch of boxes lined up next door. As he gets closer, he sees a beautiful petite woman come out of the apartment next door, feeling his presence, she looks up from a box she was about to pick up.

 

Smiling she waves at him and says, “Hello! Sorry for the mess, I hope it’s not an issue? My husband and I just moved in. I’m Wang Liying.” Extending her petite hand to Xiao Zhan.

 

“Oh no it’s not an issue, welcome to the building. I’m Xiao Zhan, do you need help?” says Xiao Zhan as he looks at all the boxes on the floor.

 

Chuckling Liying shakes her head. “It’s ok Xiao Zhan, my husband and I got it covered but thank you. That’s very kind.” Turning her head towards the entrance of her new apartment she yells out, “Yibo… Love come here please, I want to introduce you to somebody.”

 

A few moments pass by when the sound of footsteps came closer, A tall lean figure walks out of the threshold.

 

Xiao Zhan’s breath hitches.

 

Out walks the most handsome man he’s ever seen in his life. Gulping Xiao couldn’t help to feel a little intimidated by him but at the same time enamored.

 

As Xiao gets a better view of the man, he couldn’t help to get flustered as Yibo (he assumes is his name) eyes Xiao up and down. Like he was examining every inch of his body.

 

“Love, this is our new neighbor Xiao Zhan. Xiao Zhan this is my husband Wang Yibo.” Says Liying as she proudly wraps her hand around Yibo’s bicep.

 

Coming out of his thoughts Xiao Zhan clears his throat and extends his hand out towards Yibo. “Nice to meet you Yibo.”

 

Taking a quick second to look at Xiao Zhan’s hand Yibo eventually takes hold and shakes it.

 

Feeling a sudden electric rush go through him, he gets goosebumps. Removing his hand from Yibo’s grip, he Coughs nonchalantly as he extends his earlier offer to Yibo but of course he rejects his offer but thanking him as well.

 

After a courtesy conversation between the couple and him, he bids them farewell after agreeing to meet up again after they are completely settled in.

 

As Xiao Zhan goes into his apartment and away from Yibo’s constant gaze like a cheetah eying a baby gazelle, he lets out a breath he didn’t know he was holding in. Leaning against his door Xiao Zhan is ashamed to admit that something tingled inside him as he gaze fell on Yibo.

 

Xiao Zhan is not blind, he sees how attractive Yibo is, anyone with eyes can see it. Sighing in disappointment knowing Yibo is a married man…. A forbidden fruit. The apple that he can’t eat as eve already took her claim on it.

PRESENT DAY

 

Frustrated by Xiao Zhan’s silence the detective decided to take it one step further and get under Xiao Zhan’s skin as last efforts to get him to confess. “Look Dr. Xiao we both know that you and Mr. Wang were having an affair.” With a mocking smirk he leans himself over the table a bit to have direct eye to eye contact with Xiao Zhan. “And Don’t try to deny it, we have evidence to support this.” Snaps his finger to his partner signaling him to give him the folder he had in his hands, as his partner complies the detective opens the beige folder and takes out photographs and lays them down in front of Xiao Zhan.

 

Leaning over to look at the “Evidence” Xiao Zhan freezes, Infront of him are photographs of him and Yibo kissing, holding hands, hugging affectionately outside a restaurant they frequent that is miles from their apartment due to the possible risk of getting caught by anyone they know. But they don't look like regular photos that were taken from a camera or a phone, they are a bit grainy and in black and white with weird angles so they must be CCTV pictures.

 

Seeing Xiao Zhan’s reaction, the smug detective leans back on his chair. “So just tell us you did it out of anger towards Mrs. Wang, she got to be the wife while you were just the other women who kept his bed warm.” Says the detective with a mocking smirk.

 

Tearing his gaze away from the pictures that were laid out in front of him, Xiao Zhan’s head snaps up so fast by the detective's accusation that he almost risked whiplash, looking at the detective in disbelief. “NEVER! That’s not true, we loved each other, and we wanted to be together but I knew what was at stake here, so I  had ended our relationship 3 weeks ago.”

 

3 Weeks Ago

 

Today was not Xiao Zhan’s day, he had little sleep constantly feeling sick and on top of that the constant dreams…well nightmares about Liying crying on her knees to Xiao Zhan begging as tears of blood fall from her eyes. This is the second week he dreams the same dream, the first night he woke up throwing up all over his comforter.

 But deep down he knows why… the guilt… the secrecy… its eating him alive. For his own peace of mind, he knows what he has to do and as much as it pains him, he has to do the right thing.

“Doctor Xiao?” snapping out of his thoughts as the nurse comes to him, he clears his throat and nods for her to continue.

” We have a patient here who refuses to be seen by our Trauma doctor that’s on duty tonight, he says he only wants to be treated by you.” Hands Xiao Zhan the man’s chart.

seeing the name on the chart made his blood run cold. “Yibo!”

Chapter 2: Love is Selfless

True Love is Selfless; it’s loving with an unselfish heart. Even when you know it won’t be your Happy Ending.

 

“Yibo!!! is he ok?” Asked Xiao Zhan in panicked voice as he begins to frantically read the notes on the chart hoping for some sort of update on his condition.

 

“Yes, he came in with a mild concussion and he needs stitches on his right temple. He had a motorcycle accident Dr.” explains the nurse.

 

Nodding Xiao Zhan lets out a breath well that’s some comfort... he’s not in a coma or worse. DEAD. But he needs to go see him. Thanking the nurse he rushes towards Yibo’s room.

 

As he tries to compose himself, so he doesn’t seem worried Infront of Yibo, he pauses at the door and puts his poker face on. Opening the door, he sees Yibo lying on the bed with a bloody towel in his hand pressing on his wound with blood streaming down the side of his face.

Seeing Yibo alive and breathing sends a great relief but now knowing how difficult he was being giving the doctor a hard time sends a wave of annoyance, why must he act like a child sometimes. Wanting to let his presence & annoyance be known Xiao Zhan slams the medical chart a little too hard on the side table.

 

Sitting up in a fright Yibo turns towards the noise, seeing Xiao Zhan there sends a great relief through him. “Finally! You’re a hard doctor to request.” Chuckles Yibo not noticing the stern look that is being thrown his way.

 

“Yibo I’m not in charge of the ER, I’m a surgeon. Why are you giving them a hard time. Let them do their job please!” Sighing Xiao goes to the phone to order a CT scan for Yibo. Hanging up he turns sharply towards him, “Now they are going to come up in a few minutes to take you for a CT scan to check for any brain injury so please behave and let them do their jobs I beg you. Or I will not be here when you get back.” Warns Xiao Zhan as he begins to look through the cabinets to get all the supplies, he needs to stitch Yibo up after his CT scan.

 

35 Minutes Later

 

Finishing up stitching Yibo’s wound Xiao Zhan gets up from his chair and begins to dispose of the scraps and bloody towels.

 

“All done! Yibo, I beg of you please behave next time, let the doctors here do their jobs I can guarantee you that they are good at what they do. Also, please be careful on that death trap, how many times have I told you to stop speeding, life is not a racetrack.”

 

Chuckling Yibo grabs Xiao Zhan’s hand pulling him close. “I’m sorry my gege I was distracted, it won’t happen again.” Pulls Xiao Zhan’s down to eye level and leans in.

 

Kissing Yibo was wrong he knows it, but he can’t help it, what he feels for Yibo is bigger than any of his principles or morals. He’s known Yibo and Liying for a year now and they’ve gotten really close, when his schedule allows it, he joins them for dinner, or he cooks them some delicious Ma Po Tofu he learned from his mother. And in 2 months of knowing the couple Yibo and Xiao Zhan begin their affair.

10 months Ago

  

Xiao Zhan didn’t know how it happened one minute they are preparing dinner together and the next Xiao Zhan is being lifted up on the kitchen counter while being devoured by Yibo’s kisses and groping. Liying wasn’t able to join Yibo for dinner tonight, so he decided to bring everything he was going to cook for Liying over to Xiao Zhan’s.

 

And as they get further and further deep into their conversation, they somehow end up right next to each other practically shoulder to shoulder, as they reach for the same knife their fingers touch and it makes them both stop in their tracks as electricity ran through them both, you would think this would only happen in romantic movies, but it happened to them.

 

That’s when Xiao Zhan is being kissed by Yibo, as the kiss gets deeper and deeper Xiao Zhan is not having time to process everything and so his logic is being locked away deep into his mind.

 

They made love that night… right on the kitchen counter. And the affair began and continued for the next 10 months.

In that moment his plan to do the right thing is pushing and prodding his memory but he keeps holding that door closed, the boundaries that divided them blurred, and a subtle shift in the atmosphere hinted at an explored connection. Their gaze held a promise of something uncharted, a magnetic force pulling them together So as he’s kissing Yibo the door that he tried so desperately to keep closed blows wide open and a sudden image of Liying crying tears of blood pops up in his head and he suddenly pushes Yibo away.

 

“Yibo! Stop! I can't do this anymore.” Looks at Yibo with a panicked.

"Zhan-ge what do you mean? what's wrong?" asks Yibo confused on Xiao Zhan's sudden outburst.

Sighing Xiao Zhan wiggles out of Yibo's hold and walks away stopping at the window. " This is wrong! I can't do this anymore Yibo, the guilt is tearing me apart, it's driving me crazy. Liying doesn't deserve what we are doing to her. She has been nothing but a good friend to me and a wonderful wife to you... don't you think it's time we return the favor?" Says Xiao Zhan as his gaze is focused on the building across the street, making it his focal point as he tries so hard to keep his composure, he knows if he turns around to look at Yibo, he knows he'll break and let out all the emotion's he's feeling. 

“ Zhan-ge, you can’t be serious? You really want to end what we have, I can’t do that. I love you… I need you. Yes, I admit I don’t like lying to Liying any more than you do, but I can’t hide what I feel for you either. I’ll leave her if that’s what it takes for us to continue our love.” Yibo desperately pleads to Xiao Zhan.

 

Shaking his head Xiao Zhan turns towards Yibo, bitting his inner cheek to keep him from sobbing. As he puts his hands behind his back gripping them real tight, he looks Yibo dead in the eyes.

 

“ I do love you Yibo but I’ve made up my mind, I want to live a peaceful life and that can’t happen if I have to constantly be in the shadow of your wife, this whatever we had is done, I’m done. I hope you can respect my decision.. Now, They’re going to keep you over night for observation, please take your medication when you get home and rest as much as possible, you should have your stitches taken out in about a week, depending how the healing process goes. Liying was notified 30 minutes ago so she should be here soon… I expect you to act like an adult about this. Now, I have to go check on a patient before his surgery. Take care Yibo“ bowing his head to Yibo just to hide his tears Xiao Xhan whips around and leaves the room.

 

As he closes the door behind him he feels like his whole world just crumbled around him, leaning against the door for support as his legs became jello,covering his mouth with his hand as a sob breaks through.

 

Afraid that Liying will appear at any moment he nudges himself off the the door and with wobbly legs he slowly walks away, as he gets closer to the elevator he suddenly feels like his head is getting fussy trying his best not to let his legs give way he holds on to a rail by the elevator’s, trying to get his eyes to focus he hears the elevator ding. As it opens his vision blurs and he can’t hold on to consciousness anymore, before he blacks  out he see’s a silhouette of someone running to him.

 

Chapter 3: Love & Death

Summary:

The name of this chapter is actually the name of the movie of the real case.

Nothing lasts forever, That’s the tragedy and the miracle of existence- that’s the hope, if with every tear shed waters the seed within, then so be it.

 

“ Xiao Zhan! Xiao Zhan! Can you hear me? If you can hear me please nod your head.” 

Sighing Xiao Zhan’s colleague Dr. Yubin gets up from his spot and crouches down infront of Xiao Zhan, grabs his hand giving it a comforting squeeze . “ Xiao Zhan I know this is a lot to take in and due to your reaction I can tell you were not planning this but we did the test 3 times and your HCG levels are high which does indicate the presence of a fetus. I say you’re about 3 weeks along.”

 

3 weeks? That was around the time Yibo and Liying invited him over for dinner, Liying ran late so while she showered him and Yibo had a quicky on their couch. They didn’t have time to get a condom so they didn’t use protection, he had to stay with Yibo’s cum inside of him until Liying got out of the bathroom.

 

“ So… let’s address the elephant in the room shall we, we’ve been friends for a long time and I’ve never seen or or heard you discuss anything regarding a potential partner in your life. So Xiao Zhan look me in the eyes, and as my friend I need you to tell me the truth, we owe it to each other to be honest  after years of friendship throughout medical school and the start of our careers. So tell me…  is  Wang Yibo the father of your child? “

 

Feeling like someone had punched him in the gut, Xiao Zhan gives Yubin a Stunned look.

 

That’s all Yubin needed to know… sighing in disappointment Yubin lets his head hang low. “ Xiao Zhan how could you let this happen, he’s a married man.”

 

Letting out a sob Xiao Zhan shakes his head in despair, “ You think I don’t know that? I fell for him, what do you want me to say Yubin? Since the first time I saw him I felt something for him. I know he’s a married man and I shouldn’t have let this affair go on for so long but I wasn’t strong enough to ignore what I felt. I let myself be controlled by love and passion. But you know what the funny thing is? I just ended my relationship with him not long before I fainted.“ says Xiao Zhan as he lets out a  painful laugh as tears fall down his cheeks.

 

Nodding in comprehension Yubin gives Xiao Zhan a comforting hug, as he rubs his back he tells him, “ I understand you don’t have to  explain yourself to me, I know your heart and I know you didn’t deliberately try to betray your friendship with his wife, you did the right thing on ending the relationship.” Pulling away and he looks at Xiao Zhan dead in the eyes again. “But you are not alone in this you hear me, I’ll be here to help you every step of the way. It’s up to you if you want to let Yibo know about your pregnancy. “

 

In absolute fear Xiao Zhan shakes his head  as his eyes wide at the thought of Yibo finding out about his pregnancy. He doesn’t even want to imagine what would happen if Yibo finds out, he’ll for sure leave Liying and Xiao Zhan won’t be able to live with that. Yibo cannot know about the existence of this baby.

 

“ No! Yubin he cannot know, if he finds out he’ll leave his wife for sure and that can’t happen. This baby is only mine, I have 5 months to find a new place to live. Before I start showing, I’ll be gone before then.” Finding relieve in his  own explanation, Xiao Zhan sniffling wipes his tears away as he gets up from the chair. “ I have to go Yubin, I have a lot to figure out, I need to clear my head.”

 

Heads to the door, he stops  infront of the door just before he opens it’s and turns to Yubin, giving him a weak smile he thanks him, “ Thank you for being such a good friend, I know my baby will be loved.” Gives Yubin one last nod before opening the door and leaving.

Tragedy strikes us all at one point in our life. People make mistakes, and some are lucky enough to walk away without lasting marks, while others live a lifetime with the choice they made. 

 

 

As Xiao Zhan enters his apartment, he walks sluggishly to his couch. As he plops down on, he began to rub his temples as a headache begins to set in. 

God!!! A baby… he’s having Yibo’s secret love child. Funny.. in this point in his life he never imagined getting pregnant, I mean if it was the case he figured he would be married. But nope life is paying him back for his wrong doings… now he is on his own to raise a child, because he doesn’t see Yibo as an option in his life anymore.

 

As his mind continues to race his hand subconsciously moves to his stomach. As soon as he feels that weight on his midsection he is snapped back to reality. Picking his head up a little to look at his stomach, he begins to imagine how his baby is developing right now, how big it is right now. Call it what you want a “ love child”… “ Bastard Child.”

 

It’s his child… and he already loves it and will protect it against anything and anyone.

 

As he dives deeper and deeper in thoughts, he almost doesn’t hear his doorbell.

 

Whipping his head to the door he quickly wipes away his tears. Getting up from his spot on the couch, he walks aimlessly to the door.

 

Opening it his breath hitched.

Chapter 4: Adulterous Husband

Sometimes, Life hits you and you can do is put in a brave face, push through the pain, suppress the tears, and pretend everything is fine.

 

 

Liying.

 

The last thing Xiao Zhan expected was seeing Liying here, he figured she would be with Yibo at the hospital.

 

“ Liying is something wrong? Did something happen with Yibo?” Xiao Zhan couldn’t help but to worry maybe his condition took a turn for the worse all of a sudden, after all head injuries are very unpredictable.

 

“ Oh ummm no don’t worry he’s fine, I just came to get some overnight necessities we needed but I actually wanted to come check on you and ask for a favor? Can you come help me find something’s I need to take back for Yibo. He said something about it you knowing where he placed his paperwork.” Says Liying with a forced smile.

 

Confused on what she means but follows her out of his apartment towards her apartment anyways, as they go in she asks him to close the door behind him, nodding as response even though he knows she can’t see him, he closes the door behind him he follows her into the living room. “Me? Why me?” Asks Xiao Zhan.

 

“ Well I’m not sure but I also wanted to take the opportunity to see how you were because when I was going to Yibo’s room at the hospital I was getting out of the elevator and I saw you collapse on the floor so I ran to get some help after I checked that you were breathing .” Oh god  it was her! He vaguely remembers a silhouette of a person coming to him, he  couldn’t even make out gender just a black mass coming towards him before he passed out. But of course life is punishing him with having his lovers wife helping him, making him feel more worse than ever now knowing he has her husband’s baby growing inside him.

 

Avoiding eye contact Xiao Zhan nervously bows his head to her as a thank you.

 

“ Are you ok? Did they tell you what was the cause of you fainting?” Asks Liying with a worried tone.

 

“ Oh, yeah nothing to worry about Liying it was just stress related. I haven’t gotten much sleep and long hours at the hospital caught up to me I guess but nothing to worry about.” Giving her a fake smile Xiao Zhan hopes it’s enough  to show her that he’s ok so she can drop the subject

 

Nodding along to what Xiao Zhan is saying, Liying leans closer to him and puts her hand over his as a comfort or a gesture to let him know that she feels for him and understands.  “ The great Doctor Xiao Zhan has to give that big brain of his a break and relax, I’ll go make us some tea ok, stay here.” Giving his hand a gentle squeeze Liying gets up and goes to the kitchen.

 

As soon as she’s out of sight Xiao Zhan lets out a nervous breath, god life is really paying him back isn’t it, having her here worried about him instead of being with Yibo at the hospital just makes this whole situation so fucked up. He just wants her out to his apartment so he properly breath and relax.

 

Coming back with two cups of tea Liying sets them on the coffee table, “ Here you go, nice and hot.” Hands Xiao Zhan his cup and she picks up her own cup, as she begins to blow on it gentle she speaks up. “ Now, I think it’s time to discuss your situation.”

 

As he was about to sip his tea he freezes in his tracks, “ Huh? What do you mean?” Confused on what she’s talking about, Xiao Zhan gives her a questioning look.

 

“ I’m talking about you having my adulterous husband’s baby.”

Chapter 5: Wishing it’s just a Dream

Summary:

Liying POV

The saddest thing about betrayal is that it never comes from your enemies: it comes from those you trust the most.

 

Getting that call that my husband was in a car accident was the most scariest thing I’ve had to go through, that drive to the hospital was a blur I was driving on autopilot, I probably ran through 2 red lights but at this point all I cared about was seeing my husband. I barely even had stopped my car in the parking spot before I flew out and ran to the entrance.

 

Looking around frantically for a sign to lead me to the emergency room the receptionist called me over. “ Hi yes I’m Wang Liying, my husband Wang Yibo was brought in… he was in a car accident.”

 

Looking for the name the receptionist director her on where she should go. Thanking her Liying went into an elevator to the floor Yibo was in. Waiting those few seconds for her was excruciatingly long like the path to Yibo was getting longer and longer but as the elevator doors open she stops dead in her tracks, taking a  moment to process what lies ahead of her (Literally). There on the ground lies Xiao Zhan.

 

Snapping back to reality she sprints in his direction and kneels down. “ Xiao Zhan! Zhan? Can you hear me.” Checks his pulse, sighing in relief as she feels that strong pulse. Frantically looking around the corridor in both directions she frustratedly yells for help. Soon nurses started appearing and helped Xiao Zhan, as another fire for a stretcher she reassures Liying that he’s in good hands, as they place him onto a stretcher. Liying nods and watches them wheel Xiao Zhan off.

 

Standing there for a few seconds trying to recollect herself, as she presses her hand over her heart she takes in a few breathes. Suddenly realizes what she was there for in the first place she turns and walks towards Yibo’s room.

 

Opening the door she sees him laying in his bed watching TV, noticing  his head bandaged and an IV drip on his arm, she couldn’t help to feel a little dread for him being in this situation in the first place, there’s no worse feeling in the world than hopelessness seeing a loved one hurt and not being able to do anything about it but all that matters is that he’s alright and breathing and in no life danger.

 

Noticing his wife at the door, he gives her a weak smile, “ Hey Liying, what took you long? I thought you wouldn’t come.”

 

Closing the door behind her she heads to his direction, “ I know I know it’s just the craziest thing happened, when I got off the elevator I see Xiao Zhan on the floor passed out.” Explains Liying.

 

Going rigid Yibo suddenly sits up from his bed, feeling a sharp pain in his head he hisses a bit but is not deterred, worried for Xiao Zhan. “What? Is he ok? What happened?” Trying to get out of bed.

 

Rushing to Yibo Liying stops him from ripping out his IV, “ Yibo are you crazy? Stop! You can’t leave the bed. Look I know you’re concerned about your best friend but you can’t make things worse ok. Now, stay in bed and I’ll go find out about his condition and let you know ok, is that ok? “

 

Grunting as Liying helps him back into bed Yibo listens to her and asked her to please go check on Xiao Zhan.

 

Nodding Liying goes and searches for Xiao Zhan, asking a nurse she finds out that he’s awake and alert and with another Doctor in his office getting his test results, asking the nurse what office she thanks her and goes looking for Xiao Zhan.

 

Seeing the office door that reads “ Doctor Yubin” which was the doctor Xiao Zhan was treated by which is odd since at the bottom of his name it says “ Gynecologists”… weird? Why would Xiao Zhan need to be seen by a gynecologist. As She was about to knock on the door she hears a loud voice at the other side of the door… Xiao Zhan? as she presses her ear to the door she clearly hears his voice and as she stays quiet she hears what he is saying.

 

“ Is Wang Yibo the father?” …. “ He’s a married man.”….. “ affair.”

 

God! Every word is like one stab after another in Liyings stomach, this can’t be true her mind must be playing tricks on her but yet a sudden rush of nausea hits her making her cover her mouth with her hand at the same time she’s holding in a sob scared if she opens her mouth she might vomit.

 

Yibo and Zhan were having an affair…. Zhan is pregnant with Yibo’s baby…. Oh god! She can’t breathe. Bolting to the nearest bathroom Liying barely has time to vomit into one of the toilets. Dry heaving as she collapse on the floor by the toilet leaning against a stall she cries. How can they do this to her? How can the two people she most cares and love betray her that way. This has to be a nightmare that she’s gonna wake up any minute from… any minute now…. Come on Liying wake up… closing her eyes tight she begins to smack herself, “ Wake up! Liying wake up NOW!!!” After a few moments of silence waiting for something to happen, for her to jolt awake in bed next to Yibo but nothing… she’s still on the damn floor in the hospital bathroom lamenting herself and the betrayal that just ruined her life.

 

As the minutes go by her thoughts are  moving at the speed of light… God why couldn’t you just have killed me on the way over here, I would have preferred that a millions times than knowing the man I love betrayed me. What should I do now? Do I go barge into that office and demand an explanation from Xiao Zhan? Do I go to Yibo and yell at him for hurting me like this? I can’t think straight my heart… my head hurts.

 

Letting minutes go by as she begins to calm down, it dawned on her that she needs to approach this carefully not what she was thinking of doing. As she gets up from the bathroom stall she goes to the sink and washes her face, as she dries herself she looks at her reflection. Seeing her own pain and anger reflect back at her she knows what she needs to do now.

Hearing his room door open Yibo sees Liying entering, looking at her with so much concern in his eyes, it hurts her to know now why so much concern for Xiao Zhan.

 

“Well? What happened? Is he ok? Did you see him?”

 

Giving Yibo a forced smile Liying is trying so hard not to blow up on him, “ No I didn’t get to see him because he was in a doctors office waiting for results but he’s awake and responsive.”

 

Letting out a breath Yibo relaxes at hearing that Xiao Zhan is ok.

 

Noticing his demeanor change, it infuriates her knowing the meaning behind it. Clearing her throat she goes to sit next to her husband’s bed. “ Don’t worry love I’m sure he was probably dehydrated or he probably was running on little sleep.  So now you  worry about yourself ok.”

 

Later

 

After eating dinner Liying decided to go get some necessities that they will need before they close all the doors after visiting hours. Promising him she’ll be back soon, she leaves him to finish up his dinner.

“ I’m talking about you having my adulterous husband’s baby.”

 

Frozen Xiao Zhan goes rigid, dropping his tea cup causing the porcelain cup to break into pieces causing the liquid to spray him and everything around him. Trying to regain his composure Xiao Zhan gets up and sprints to the kitchen away from Liying piercing glare not caring that he almost slips on the wet floor.

 

Putting her cup down Liying gets up and follows Xiao Zhan to the kitchen, grabbing his arm she yanks him back almost causing him to crash right into her. “ How could you? I thought we were friends, I thought you cared for me.” Says Liying as tears began to form in her eyes, looking at him with so much pain and anger it makes Xiao Zhan shiver, it takes him back to those dreams of her begging and crying  tears of blood. Maybe that was a sign that this moment was bound to happen, that everything was gonna come to light. He has to let her know how sorry he is, it wasn’t his intention.

 

Shaking his head in desperation he grabs her arms in a Pleading manner as he tries to catch her gaze as a last attempt for forgiveness, “ I’m so sorry Liying, I really am my intention was to never betray you or your friendship. I care for you so much but I never expected to fall in love with Yibo either, I tried to set that boundary, I tried to always think about you and your feelings but I guess my love for Yibo was too great to ignore.”

 

Ripping her arms from his grip, she looks him up and down her eyes stopping at his midsection , looking at his stomach with so much anger and disgust. Those few seconds of a silence were torture for Xiao Zhan being looked at with so much disgust and scrutiny he opens his mouth to say something but before the words can leave his mouth his head jerks to the side as a painful sting radiates from his right cheek.

 

“ Damn you Xiao Zhan, I damn you and that abomination that you carry in your womb, you knew that Yibo and I were going to start trying but no… you couldn’t sit by and let that happen right, I HATE YOU!!!” Lunging forwards she began to hit his chest repeatedly with so much force that it makes Xiao Zhan back up against the kitchen sink.

 

“ You need to get rid of that thing before Yibo finds out, you want redemption right? Well this is a way to show me that you are sorry, get rid of that thing and leave… leave forever and don’t contact us again.” Looks at Xiao Zhan with such a crazed look in her eyes that it made Xiao Zhan gulp in fear.

Present Day

 

“ So she found out about the affair and that now you’re expecting her husband’s child. Am I getting that correctly?” Asks the detective as he continues to interrogate Xiao Zhan.

 

Nodding numbly Xiao Zhan continues to tell the Detective his side of the story. “ Yes Sir, she somehow found out, she never really told me how she found out, but I’m assuming at the hospital because where else… I didn’t  speak about it outside those walls, so I assume she overheard my conversation with my colleague who diagnosed me.” That’s the only way she would have known, Yubin doesn’t know her personally to tell her anything, no other doctor or nurse was present at the time in the office so that was Xiao Zhan’s guess.

 

Letting out a breath the detective shakes his head in disappointment, “ Wow what a predicament you’re in Doctor… and here I thought doctors were smart people.” Letting out a sarcastic chuckle at Xiao Zhan’s direction.

Xiao Zhan can’t believe what he’s hearing, Liying isn’t thinking straight, he knows she’s just blinded by the pain and anger. “ Look Liying you have ever right to be mad at me, go ahead hit me again if it makes you feel better but I will not comply with your request, this is my child and regardless of the mistakes I made it has no right to pay for it, so I’m sorry but I can’t do that I love this baby. “

 

Letting out a shriek Liying forcefully pushes Xiao Zhan against the kitchen sink again.

 

Everything else that follows happens in slow motion to Xiao Zhan, his eyes and mind couldn’t process Liying next move in time. As a sharp agonizing pain shoots up and down his left arm Xiao Zhan fight or flight mode kicks in and in a panic he shoves Liying away, as she’s falls to the floor she drops the bloody knife that she had just grazed Xiao Zhan’s arm with.

 

Panting Xiao Zhan grabs his wounded arm and looks down at Liying with so much fear.

 

“ WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING LIYING!! YOUR’RE NOT THINKING STRAIGHT, YOU COULD HAVE KILLED ME!!” Yells out Xiao Zhan with so much anger he’s shaking.

 

Still on the floor Liying turns her head towards him, “ YOU CAN’T HAVE HIM.” Spewing out the words with so much hatred as she sits up.

 

“ Look!  Liying you have every right to be upset and angry but this is not the solution, think about it what a you are doing… think about how this is going to end for you, you won’t get to have Yibo because you’ll be in jail.” Trying to ration with her, he fails to see that she’s picked up the knife again and was holding it behind her back.

 

Shaking her head Liying refuses to hear reason, she’s blinded by the anger and sadness her reasoning is completely blocked by the hurt and all she wants at that moment is for them to hurt like she is hurting.  “ FINE YOU DON’T WANT TO GET RID OF THAT THING GROWING INSIDE YOU THEN I’LL JUST HAVE TO CUT IT OUT OF YOU.”

 

Getting up from the floor in a swift motion Liying takes her hand out of from behind her back and the knife is visible again.

 

Closing his eyes Xiao Zhan prepares himself for what’s to come.

Chapter 7: Insanity Blurs Sanity

Inside Every sane Person there’s  a madman struggling to get out… No one goes mad quicker than a totally sane person.

 

 

Getting up from the floor in a swift motion Liying takes her hand out of from behind her back and the knife is visible again.

 

Closing his eyes Xiao Zhan prepares himself for what’s to come.

As he was about to accept his fate, he suddenly comes back to his senses…. No! he can’t let this happen he has a child to protect… his child, he has a responsibility… to protect the life inside him at all cost... Like any parent would do. His eyes open just in time to see Liying rushing to him with the knife, finally his body decided to cooperate and let him move again, he rushes at her, as they meet half way he grabs her arm and starts pushing her arm away from him.

 

“ Let go Liying! think about what you are doing! If you kill me Yibo will never forgive you and you’ll go to jail for murder.”  Trying desperately to make her see reason after a few minutes he realizes his attempt is received  with no avail, she has such a crazed look in her eyes that anyone who didn’t know her would say she was unhinged.

 

Rustling with her trying so hard to take the knife away from her grip turned out to be a challenge, somehow she’s s got super strength making it hard for Xiao Zhan to take the knife. As blood continues to ooze out of his wound with the strain of the struggle he began to feel his arm weakening with the pain.

Present Day

 

“ We didnt find traces of your blood or her blood on the knife so I assume you cleaned it and put it back where it belonged didn’t you Doctor.” Says the detective, nodding in shame Xiao Zhan closes his eyes.

”She fought like hell didn’t she.” States the detective.

 

“ That wasn’t Liying , we turned her that way… the funny thing is I can’t even hate her because at the end she didn’t start all of this… we did… Yibo and I.” Shaking his head in disappointment Xiao Zhan knows if theirs anyone to blame is himself and Yibo. Liying had a heart of gold… she was school teacher for crying out loud, she would often talk about her students and how they meant the world to her, but on that day she was just a woman scorned.

As his left arm continues to bleed, his strength keeps on diminishing, his muscle started to contract with every surge of pain in his arm . He knew that it’s only a matter of minutes before he looses complete strength.

 

As their bodies jerk side to side with their hands still gripping the knife, Xiao Zhan jerks them both to the right but in the process trips over her feet and they tumble to the floor with Liying ontop of him.

 

As they both try to recover from the fall Liying takes advantage of the fact that she’s on top of him and tries to gain completely control. Pushing the knife with all her strength towards his chest she grinds her teeth and murmurs “ Die Already!!”

 

Trying to fight against her strength once more, Xiao Zhan pushes the knife away from his chest, getting a good grip he begins to turn the knife away from himself.

 

as the knife keeps turning in their hold, the blade is now pointing up towards the ceiling. Xiao Zhan takes this as advantage point now that the blade is away from him and he tries to push himself up from the ground.

 

Moment of Impact….

 

In a swift motion Xiao Zhan sits up with Liying still on top,  suddenly Liying lets out a gasp and freezes, eyes widening she begins to gape for air…  like a fish out of water.

 

slowly she looks down to her stomach .

 

Confused  on her sudden change of behavior Xiao Zhan follows her gaze and lets out a shriek.

 

There it is… the knife… lodged in her stomach. Paralyzed with terror Xiao Zhan can’t breathe… he felt trapped in his own body and the only thing he could feel was the thundering of his heart in his ears and the rush of blood to his head as he was trying to fully understand what was was happening…. This is another   Nightmare… he’ll wake up soon…. Right?…

 

Releasing his grip on the knife Xiao Zhan lifts Liying off of himself and lays her on her back so he can assist the situation.

 

Gasping Liying looks at him, “T-this is what you wanted right? A-are you happy now.” Says Liying huskily as her throat begins to feel like sandpaper.

 

How can she say that, of course not! He didn’t want anyone to get hurt.  At the end he was already seeing her as a sister but again no one does this to a sibling. “ No don’t say that Liying you’re going to be fine, I’m going to go get so supplies and I’ll call an ambulance you’re going to be fine.” Says Xiao Zhan trying to sound like he has his emotions all together and not scared shitless.. but he’s a doctor for crying out loud, he can fix this.

 

“ Liar!!! I-I don’t believe anything you say, I’m going to tell the police you tried to kill me out of J-jealousy that you wanted me out of the picture to stay with my husband… you’re the one going to jail and once you do I-I’ll take your baby.” Liying starts laughing but due to her injury comes out more like a cough type laugh. Which makes it even more bone chilling.

 

No she can’t do that… if she does his life is over and his baby will be taken from him. What is he gonna do? Will Yibo believe him that it was an accident. No, he won’t he wouldn’t even believe it himself… what is he gonna do? As panic sets in he begins to hyperventilate… his life and of his baby’s  will not stand a chance. He’ll go to jail and they will take his baby and he’ll probably never seen the baby again.

 

As images of himself crying and begging for his baby and Yibo with accusing hatred filled eyes staring at him. His logical and sanity is being distorted now… with every millisecond of panic that sets in, he can no longer think or feel.

 

Xiao Zhan suddenly lunges at her, yanking the knife from her stomach. He raises it over his head and looks at her with so much hatred. He has not right to hate her but at this moment he can’t see it.

Sighing in disappointment the detective gives Xiao Zhan a pity look“ After hearing your side of the story Mr. Xiao, I have to be quite frank with you, it’s  not looking good. You and Mr.Wang should have done things differently… the right way, holding off your relationship until Mr. Wang and Ms. Liying had gotten a divorce. I usually know or have a hunch on how the trial will go but with your case  it hard to say what the judge will decided, you’re looking at 3 charges voluntary manslaughter, assault with a deadly weapon, and abuse of a corpse… you stabbed her 30 times way after she was dead. The only silver lining you have is self defense, but even then you better hope the judge will take that in consideration for your sake.“

He can’t let her do this, no one will believe the stabbing was accidental not after they find out him and Yibo were having an affair, they’re going to think he hurt her to remove her from the picture. She’ll get what she wants and he’ll go to jail. His baby will be taken away from him and most likely given to Yibo and her…. Fear was one more thing added to the turmoil in his head.

** Warning Strong Scene**

 

Panic sets in he lets out a shriek as he plunges the knife right into her chest, as he feels the blade slice into her heart,  he shoves the knife deeper into her chest cavity, as he feels a heart artery he began twisting the knife knowing it will break the vain and her chest will begin to fill with blood with every pump the heart makes. After a few seconds he pulls the knife out.

 

Breathing in heavily as the adrenaline high rushes through him, he looks at Liying he sees her gasping for air, but  even in the brink of death Liying gives Xiao Zhan a mocking smile l. “ W-who’s the murder n-now? Y-you are n-no better T-than me. I Damn Y-you and that T-thing, I-I hope I-It’s born D-dead.”  Says Liying with difficulty as blood begins to pool inside her chest cavity, making it harder to breathe or speak.

 

Xiao Zhan knew with those words she was gonna get what she wanted….  For him to loose control again and at that moment he didn’t care, those words cut deep into him (No pun intended.). Shaking he suddenly closes his eyes and  raised the knife over his head and plunges it into her body over and over and over again until all the anger, pain, hurt has left his body.  As he calms down he’s scared to see what awaits before him but he finally has the courage to l opens his eyes. Seeing Liying in a pool of her own blood with her lifeless eyes wide open he begins to sob, this isn’t what was suppose to happen, he didn’t want this as he looks down  at his red stained hands guilt sets in and he lies down in a fetal position hugging his legs next to liyings body not caring if he’s laying in her blood that’s the least of his worries right now, all he can do is cry and say over and over again “I’m sorry “.

 

After what seems like an eternity, the realization that he can’t be here sets in, what if Yibo sends someone to look for her? They can’t find him here. Panicking he gets up from the floor and grabs the knife and cleans it with a paper towel and shoves the towel into his pocket but as he does so he sees all the blood covering him from head to toe, he can’t walk out like that his shoes will leave a print he has to undress here.

 

Getting an idea he quickly bends down to take off his shoes and socks and reaches for paper towels and placing some on the bottom of his feet, moving around Liyings body trying to erase his bloody shoes prints. He finally slides away from the kitchen which allows him to get off the bloody paper towels and as he places the rest of the paper towels on the floor he tiptoes to Liying and Yibo’s bedroom.

 

Going into the bathroom takes off his clothes leaving them ontop of a bath towel that was on the floor making sure his clothes don’t stain the floor, he  turns towards the shower and turns on the water. Stepping in the shower he feels the cold water cascading down his body creating a river of red water all around him, as he it washes away the blood he knows it can’t wash away his sin, the numbness begins to set in and he just stands still staring into a void.

 

God what have I done? How did I get here?

Chapter 9: No love like no other

A mother’s love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no bounds, no pity, it dares all things, and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path.

Closing his eyes in shame Xiao Zhan’s body began to tremble. “ She threatened me, we both knew the first stab was an accident, but she was going to tell everyone that I was trying to kill her in order to take her place as Yibo’s partner, I was left helpless, who was gonna believe me? Especially after finding out him and I were in a relationship. I was alone in this, what would have happened to my baby if I go to jail? All I was thinking about was my baby and how all this would wrongfully tear my baby out of my arms, I felt scared…alone…helpless. But I’ve digged my own grave the minute I let Wang Yibo Kiss me. I just want eveyone to know how sorry I am.” Letting out another sob Xiao Zhan covered his face and cried in his hands once more. He really wanted to regret meeting Yibo and the love that grew between them but how can he? He got something out of it, a beautiful soul growing inside of him. A fruit of their love. He’ll never be sorry for that.

 

All the detective could think of is how bad he feels for this man as he watches Xiao Zhan cry. For over 20 years he’s seen criminals sit in these chairs with no remorse in their eyes but sitting right infront of him was a desperate man who did  what he thought he had to do in order to protect his child, he felt like their was no one way out of this without one of them dying, At the end we are all humans even the Respectful Dr. Xiao Zhan bets surgeon in the city is allowed to make mistakes. Deep down he’s rooting for him and he hopes the judge would take everything in consideration.

 

Sighing in sympathy he leans towards Xiao Zhan and pats his hand in a comforting way. “ Hang tight Mr.Xiao I just need to get the paper work so you can sign and then we proceed from there.”

 

As he was about to continue explaining to him the next step he was interrupted by a loud knock on the door.  Excusing himself he got up and opened it, he advised that there’s someone here insisting to talk to Zhan and not wanting to leave until they do. Nodding the detective follows the officer out into the hall closing the door behind him.

 

Confused Xiao Zhan begins to ponder on  who would come to see him.. his parents… his best friend… Yibo? No that’s absurd Yibo would not want to see him right now… or ever again. He doesn’t blame him though not after everything. The  image of Yibo’s face when he was being handcuffed is forever ingrained in his memory.

 

Xiao Zhan was brought out of his thought as the door creaks open.

 

As the door opens all the way, Xiao Zhan waits silently for the person to come into view. As his eyes meet the other person’s he freezes.

As Xiao Zhan leaves the tub he dries himself with one of the towels that he assumes is Yibo’s since he has a habit of leaving his towels on the floor after showering. As he’s putting his clothes back on  he stops as his reflection comes into view in the mirror, shuttering he takes it in, the bloody shirt almost all red, the red puffy eyes… this is not him… he’s not this murderer… he’s a doctor for crying out loud! He’s vowed to save lives not take it away but as his hand traveled to his stomach he suddenly realizes why he did what he did… it wasn’t for himself…. It wasn’t for Yibo… it was for his child.

 

For his child he would do anything and everything… he would kill if it was necessary… and it was.

Chapter 10: Loss and Sorrow

 Standing rigidly near the door Yibo stares holes into Xiao Zhan, saying nothing but he didn’t have to, his eyes do all the talking.

 

Shaking his head in despair Xiao Zhan pleads to him. “ Yibo… please… I didn’t mean for anything to happen. You know me, I wouldn’t intentionally hurt anyone especially Liying.”  Getting up from his spot on the table he tries to walk to Yibo but Yibo puts his hand out infront of him signaling him to stop.

 

“ Don’t… I’m not staying long, the reason I’m here is because I want the truth… I’m not waiting for the court trial, I want you to tell me face to face why… Why did you kill Liying?” Says Yibo in a tone of voice foreign to Xiao Zhan, never has he heard such distain in his voice especially aimed towards him, he doesn’t even bothering getting closer to Xiao Zhan, avoiding him like the plague... ironic since for the past year they were by each others side almost 24/7.

 Having been done with his dinner 3 hours ago Yibo has been Looking at the clock watching the time go by with no sign of Liying anywhere. His phone in his hand with 6 unanswered calls to  Liying, he’s getting worried she was just going to go pack a few necessities for them. She was supposed to be back before they’d closed the doors after visiting hours, hopefully they didn’t give her trouble and turned her away. What could be holding her up this long? He was this close in calling Xiao Zhan to see if he’s heard from her and if he could go check on her but that would be cruel on his part, especially after their conversation, plus he’s probably resting after the incident earlier, he doesn’t want to risk waking him.

 

An hour later

It’s been 4 hours and still no communication with her, he can’t wait any longer, he picks up his phone again and dials a colleague of his that lived near by and ask if he can go check on her. After hanging up he’s still left with this worry. As he waits for news his eyes start to feel heavy, as sleep was setting in he hears his door open, turning his head towards the door he suddenly see 2 police officers entering his room. Sitting briskly he looks at them with a questioning look in his eyes.

 

As they walk in one of the police officers close the door, “ Mr. Wang Yibo?” Asks one of the police officers confirming Yibo’s identity.

 

“ Yes?… Can I help you?” Yibo is so confused now, what’s going on? Why are they here? Why hasn’t his colleague called him with news of Liyings whereabouts? Where’s Liying?

 

Stepping closer to his bed the officers introduce themselves.

 

Still confused but he still nods at them.

 

“ Mr. Wang I know you are in recovery and we won’t beat around the bush here… I’m sorry to say this but your wife Mrs. Wang was found dead in your apartment this evening… I’m so sorry for your loss.” Bowing his head to Yibo the police officer offered his condolences.

 

Dead? What is he talking about? Liying is not dead, they’ve got it all wrong.

 

Shuttering Yibo begins to shake his head, his brain can’t comprehend those words so foreign to him, Liying dead.. not breathing. That’s the most ridiculous thing he’s ever heard.

 

Finding his voice he clears his throat that all of a sudden feels dry and scratchy. “ N-no I think you’ve made a mistake officer, my wife should be on her way here she’s probably stuck in traffic. She’s not dead, you’ve got it all wrong.” Yibo looks frantically between both officers trying to make them see reason because theirs no way Liying is dead, she was just here eating  dinner with him.

 

Sighing the police officer has seen this case many times before… denial… he hates giving news like this to people but it’s part of the job. “ I know it’s hard to assimilate but we assure you sir that your wife has passed and it all indicates foul play.”

 

“ No! NO! That’s not true.” As panic sets in his breath becomes erratic,  sitting up on his bed Yibo whips the blanket of himself and starts to get up, as he was about to cross the room a pair of hands stop him in his tracks. Trying to squirm his way out of the persons grip only made the hold tighter, turning his head to see who’s holding him in place makes him stop. “ Xiao Zhan.” Looking into Xiao Zhan’s eyes he sees all he needs to know, those red puffy eyes reflects Sadness, empathy, and something else Yibo can’t put his finger on. “ No… Zhan… no please tell me they got it all wrong… tell me that Liying is just stuck in traffic.” Pleading for answers he wants to hear, Yibo grips Xiao Zhan’s shirt in desperation but Xiao Zhan’s face says it all, the pity, the sadness is all the confirmation he needed.

 

Liying is gone… forever.

 

Letting out a pain filled yell,  Yibo falls to the floor bringing down Xiao Zhan with him. Clutching Xiao Zhan’s shirt, he cries.

 

As Xiao Zhan tried his best to comfort Yibo he rocks them back and forth. Crying with him he notices the police officers that was at their apartment complex earlier. Getting nervous he looks down quickly to Yibo and focuses on comforting the man.

 

Noticing Xiao Zhan one of the police officers remembers questioning him earlier, since he lived next door. He claimed to not have heard or seen anything since he had taken medication that was given to him by his doctor after having a health scare earlier that day.He doesn’t know why but something is not sitting right with him. Watching Xiao Zhan comforting Yibo so intimately throws the offers off. Something is happening here and they will figure it out.

“ Zhan… if you ever cared about me or Liying, please tell me the truth. Don’t you think I deserve that? After what you did.” Pleads Yibo as he looks at Xiao Zhan in the eyes for the first time since his arrest.

 

Closing his eyes Xiao Zhan stays silent.

 

“ ANSWER ME YOU COWARD!! ” Enraged with Xiao Zhan’s Silence, Yibo can’t contain his anger or composure any longer. After another painful silence Yibo grunts and turns to leave but 2 words made him stop in his tracks.

 

“ I’m Pregnant.”

Chapter 11: Wake Up!

When you wake up from a nightmare, the reality comforts you. When you wake up from the best dream, reality is a burden, a slap-in-the-face reminder that you could have this, but you don't and you  won't."

He didn't want Yibo to find out like this but he was desperate, he didn't want him to leave, Seeing Yibo's back go rigid and his hand gripping the door knob so tight that his knuckles began turning white makes Xiao Zhan more nervous, gulping he finally fusses up the courage to speak again. " Yibo?"

Closing his eyes Yibo lets out the breath he didn’t even know he was holding, he promised himself he was only here to get the truth of Liying’s death but something inside is stopping him from leaving... pregnant?  No that can’t be true he’s lying to keep him here, he’s a murder he can’t trust a word he says. “Liar!” was the only thing Yibo was able to spew out, sounding more painful than angry.

 

“I’m not lying Yibo I swear, please don’t go… let’s talk. I can explain everything to you, that’s why you came here right? For the truth, so please sit down and I will answer everything you want answered… Please.” Begs Xiao Zhan with hopefulness in his voice.

 

After a few seconds of silence Yibo lets his hand fall limp on his side, as he slowly turns around, he sees Xiao Zhan tear-stained face pleading him to stay, reminds him of a child whose candy was taken away. Without a word he strides to the other side of the table and sits down on the empty chair across from Xiao Zhan. After a couple more seconds of silence, he gets impatient and motions for Xiao Zhan to start explaining.

 

Nodding Xiao Zhan nervously clears his throat and does what always do when he’s nervous… he starts playing with his fingers, something he picked up during medical school when he had to do presentations or big exams. A coping mechanism if you will.

 

“Dammit Xiao Zhan stop wasting my time and get on with it… Tell me! Why did you kill Liying? And What do you mean You’re pregnant?” He can’t take anymore of Xiao Zhan’s silence; he has no patience.

 

Nodding again Xiao Zhan swallows the lump in his throat, trying to force away the nervousness that has been triggered by the sheer thought of Yibo changing his mind and walking out on him before he’s got the chance to explain himself. “Ok… Ok, the day that Liying died, was the same day I found out about my pregnancy. I fainted that day, Liying found me and got help.”

 

Nodding to his words Yibo remembers being worried sick about Xiao Zhan when Liying told him what had happened, thinking back now he shouldn’t have sent Liying to look for Xiao Zhan, that was cruel on his part but he wasn’t thinking he was worried for Xiao Zhan maybe if he didn’t maybe she would have still been alive.

 

“Yes, I know she had told me what happened on her way to see me, I was worried about you so I told her to go check on you.”

 

Of course, he did, he couldn’t leave things alone.  “That explains everything.” Mutters Xiao Zhan under his breath.

 

“Explains what?” exclaims Yibo in frustration he’s so confused more than ever, Xiao Zhan is just talking in riddles and it’s pissing him off.

 

“Liying knew of my pregnancy, I guess she overheard my colleague tell me my results, that’s the only explanation. I mean no one else knew, I needed time to process everything so I went straight home to rest and clear my head. Then a couple of hours later, Liying came knocking at my door asking me to help her find some necessities that you need, little did I know it was just part of her plan to confront me.” Running his hand through his hair as that crushing feeling in his chest resurfaces again.

 

“She confessed about knowing about my pregnancy and that my baby was yours. She started ranting to me about getting an abortion and never seeing you again…  I couldn’t Yibo this is my baby and I love it so much, I told her no and that’s when everything went to hell. She grabbed a knife and threatened to cut it out of me.” Reliving those moments in his head Xiao Zhan instinctively puts a protective hand over his stomach like a reflex, which doesn’t go unnoticed by Yibo.

 

“I didn’t think she was serious, I thought it was just the pain and anger talking. That wasn’t the Liying we knew, she had a crazed look in her eyes that  scared me but still I had hope she was just bluffing but then she grazed my arm with the knife, you can say my maternal instincts kicked in before my brain could process everything I went into survival mode, I tried taking the knife from her, we struggled and we somehow ended up on the floor with her on top of me but when I was trying to get up the knife was still in between us without realizing it, it had stabbed her in the stomach.” Closing his eyes Xiao Zhan refuses to look at Yibo at this moment, he doesn’t want to see the look of hatred that he would Surely through his way.

 

 Once again, he looks down to his fingers and continues the story, “I tried helping her, of course I did but then she started spewing accusations at me and threatening to tell everyone I did it on purpose to get her out of the picture, I didn’t know what else to do all I could think about in that moment was my baby. She told me that I would go to jail and she would keep my baby and raise it with you. Yibo I was desperate no one would have believed me… not even you.” She was right look at how Yibo came to confront him about killing liying… there’s no doubt that Yibo would have believed Liying’s story, today just proves everything he was fearing would happen if he let Liying live.

 

“I wasn’t thinking in that moment, my mind was blocked and I did what I did. I’m sorry, I hate myself and I hate the pain I caused but most of all I’m sorry for taking a life, trust me I hate myself for what I did but I had no other option. Her life or mine, but I never meant to cause you so much pain please forgive me.” Says Xiao Zhan in a teary desperation, he grabs Yibo’s hands and brings them to his forehead in a plea for forgiveness.

 

By the end of the story Yibo is a trembling crying mess but something inside tells him to believe Xiao Zhan… to forgive. He was just trying to protect his baby... their baby. As his cries subdue, he manages to mutter out “I believe you.” Red puffy eyes is what Xiao Zhan sees as he looks up at Yibo with a surprised look. He forgives him?... he believes him?

 

Yibo nods at him as a confirmation, squeezing Xiao Zhan’s hands in comfort.

Letting out a happy sob Xiao Zhan thanks him over and over again like a prayer.

 

“Yibo… what’s going to happen to me? I’m so scared, the detective says it doesn’t look good for me. I don’t want to go to prison for the rest of my life. What about our baby? “Xiao Zhan wants to wake up so bad… he wants to wake up and find Yibo sleeping next to him. He wants to wake up with his pager going off for an emergency surgery, he wants to wake up and find Liying coming back from her early morning jog wishing him a good day with a warm smile that warms his heart. He wants wake up and find his baby sleeping in their crib next to his bed… he wants to wake up and not be a murder.

 

“Don’t worry Zhan-ge I will be here the whole time; I’ll talk to my lawyers they can help you. We’re in this together, nothing bad will happen to you and our baby.” Gets up from his chair and engulfs Xiao Zhan in a comforting embrace as the man continues to cry.

Watching from behind the glass the detective sighs in sadness, never has he felt an obligation to help a murder suspect. After watching Mr. Xiao and Mr. Wang confirms to him everything that needs to be done by his part.

Chapter 12: Courage is…

Summary:

Day 1 of the trial

* don’t know how the judicial system works in china so I’m throwing in the American one since I’ve seen I’ve been in a real murder trial during my jury duty days.

Us against the world is said o so often but when the world blindsides you, corners you and makes you feel like it’s you against the world again.

“ Dr. Xiao may we see the wound that was inflicted upon you by Mrs. Wang?” Asks one of the attorneys assigned to the case.

 

Today was the first day of the Court Trial and Xiao Zhan barely slept a wink last night,  all that was running through his head is that his fate will be discussed for who knows how long. His freedom hangs in the balance, his rights to his child is in limbo. It’s only natural that sleeping was not an option.

 

Getting inside the court house was a nightmare, so much press outside so many cameras felt more like a celebrity trial…

 

“ Renowned Doctor’s love affair turns deadly”

 

Is the headlines right now, this case has gotten so much attention that it has even been covered in Japan ( According to Yubin who’s cousin had seen him on TV in Japan).

 

 

Now sitting in the witness stand looking around the court room Xiao Zhan sees all those awaiting faces dying to see his wound. He feels like a clown in a circus being told to dance infront of eager spectators. But then he turns his head to the left and sees Yibo sitting next to his mother in the first row and he’s giving him an encouraging side grin. Somehow that small gesture of courage gives him that boost he needed to face everyone.

 

Clearing his throat Xiao Zhan leans forward to release his injured arm from his coat socket, fumbling with his sleeve due to the nerves it takes him a bit longer to undo his cuffs but when he finally does he begins to fold his sleeve up. It’s still a bit tender, he needed about 10 stitches but it’s healing nicely.

 

“ Thank you Dr. Xiao, so you were saying that she was the one who attacked you first? Is that right?” Xiao Zhan really wants to slap this guy, with his stupid mocking grin and his cocky attitude.

 

“ Yes… that’s right. We were standing in the kitchen and she got upset with me.” Responds Xiao Zhan the best he could, he was so nervous.

 

“ and why was that Dr. Xiao? People don’t go ballistic for no reason.” Says the attorney.

 

Looking down shamefully Xiao Zhan closes his eyes as he speaks up. “ She found out that I-I’m pregnant… with Yibo’s baby.”

 

“ And who’s Yibo Doctor?”

 

Gulping Xiao Zhan looks around again scared to say who he is, once they know the truth he knows the accusations and theories that will start forming in their minds.. not one in his favor. “ …Her husband”

 

Gasps breakout in the courtroom with accusing whispers flowing through the room suffocating Xiao Zhan. Ashamed he looks down at his fingers.

 

“ You were having an affair with her husband Doctor…. Earlier you said she was your friend? As far as I know a friend doesn’t do that to another friend” The arrogant man throws Zhan a smug smile knowing he’s getting under Xiao Zhan’s skin.

 

Letting his tears fall, Xiao Zhan answers back “ Have you ever been in love Mr. Yáng? If you have you should know It’s not up to me who my heart chooses to love.”

 

“ Dr. Xiao I completely understand we can’t choose who we love but we do have the choice to do things in a proper manner, you could have waited for Mr. Wang to divorce Miss Liying but yet you chose that path. Which led to this tragedy. “

 

“ I know and I’m acknowledging that I made a huge mistake with the choices I’ve made but I do not regret my love or this child.” Says Xiao Zhan more sure and confident than ever, thinking about the child that grows in his womb gave him the courage to stand up for himself and wanting to make sure everyone in this courtroom knows exactly how he feels.

 

Sighing Mr.Yáng walks closer to Xiao Zhan looking at him dead in the eye. “ Loud and clear Doctor but the truth of the matter is an innocent person is dead because of these choices. And you are responsible for that death do you understand .”

 

“ Yes Mr. Yáng I am aware believe me, but when the first incident happened I tried helping her I truly did but then she began blackmailing me and threatening me I got scared. Who was gonna believe me? Especially after finding out the truth, judging by the looks being thrown my way now. Nothing was in my favor.” Wiping his tears away Xiao Zhan throws a sad look towards Yibo’s direction.

 

Seeing the shame reflect of Yibo’s eyes knowing he too did not believe him, Xiao Zhan continues to shed tears.

 

“ So you said the first stab happened when she was on top of you and you both were struggling trying to get the upper hand on the knife. Is that correct?”

 

Clearing his throat Xiao Zhan answers “ Thats correct, she had the knife pointed towards my upper left chest, if stabbed I would have had a left pneuthorax which basically means I would have had restricted air way due to a collapsed lung caused by a puncture wound. My only instinct was to get the blade away from me so I twisted our hands in a way that made the blade point away from me.

 

“ So instead of  maneuvering the blade  away from both of you, you decided to have it so it would be pointed towards her. Was that the intent Doctor? “ God he would love to wipe the smugness of that man’s face right about now. His accusations are not suppose to get to Xiao Zhan, that’s what he wants to make him crack under pressure and say something incriminating against himself. But he’s not going to give him that satisfaction.

 

“ No sir, the intent was to get that blade away from me. There was no time to think logically… not when my fight or flight mode was set off my only concern was protect myself and my child. She had threatened to cut my child out of me, who knows what would have happened if she got the upper hand and stabbed me in the chest… maybe while I was unconscious she would have done it but I wasn’t going to find that out. I sat up in a panic like any other person would have done.” As he’s talking he’s making sure he looks at everyone in the courtroom just so they know he means every word.

 

Tilting his head to the side Mr. Yáng gives Xiao Zhan a questioning look. “ Ok I get that Doctor any parent I would do anything for a child but why keep stabbing? Some say you got a certain rush from it and others say you were frustrated and was releasing your emotions… what was it Doctor?” Crossing his arms in satisfaction as Xiao Zhan shrinks in his seat shamefully, not expecting a response from Xiao Zhan, the lawyer walks back to his desk and grabs a control remote. “ Let’s look at the autopsy done on Mrs. Wang shall we?”

 

Snapping his head up in a panic Xiao Zhan’s stomach begins to churn, he was not prepared for this, he doesn’t want to see her dead body. Standing up Xiao Zhan begs the lawyer to not show the pictures, “ No Mr. Yáng… I beg you I don’t want to see her like that… Please!!!”

 

His pleas falling on deaf ears the Lawyer clicks on a button and as clear as day the autopsy picture of Liying’s dead body is being displayed in the overhead projector.

 

Betrayed by his own body, his eyes drifted up forcing him to look at the picture, feeling his legs turn into jello Xiao Zhan holds onto the podium wall as a clutch, seeing Liying lying there on a silver table covered only by a white tunic, her pale skin almost matching the tunic and her stab wounds looking more prominent against her pale white skin. Unable to stomach that  image forever ingrained in his mind Xiao Zhan bends over to his side and vomits all over the podium wall .
