Chapter 1: An Unexpected Malfunction
Notes:
Hello, everyone! Welcome to this, yet another old project I have decided to bring back from the dead. I was looking through some files, and I found this old thing, and I figured with the release of Chapters 3 and 4 of Deltarune, plus the lore drop from the Spamton Sweepstakes, now was a good time to reboot and revamp this old thing.
Now, before we start, something I'd like to say. As I plan on bringing multiple Frisks, Charas, Krises, and other characters, I have decided that pronouns for the human characters will be determined as I see fit. However, the mainline versions of the three humans will use they/them/their pronouns, the other versions will be as I determine them. I can tell you right now that Storyshift Chara, when she shows up, is gonna be female and use she/her pronouns, everyone else is to be determined.
Well, that's actually all I wanted to cover. Let's begin this experiment!

Chapter One
An Unexpected Malfunction
The Underground-Snowdin-Sans' Workshop
Sans, a short skeleton wearing a blue hoodie, black shorts, and pink fluffy slippers, was working diligently an a machine of some sort, an uncharacteristically determined look on his face.
Nearby, a creature that resembled a talking yellow flower not dissimilar to the sort one would find in a children's cartoon watched on with an annoyed expression on his face. In another life, this creature would have been Asriel Dreemurr, scion of the Royal Family of the Underground, and heir to the throne, until a dark turn of events resulted in his death and subsequental rebirth as the creature he was now. Now, he was Flowey the Flower, and he was nothing short of a living nightmare, to put it lightly.
Laying under a blanket nearby was a teenage human with tanned skin and shoulder-length brown hair wearing a blue and purple long-sleeved shirt, black jeans, and black boots. Hovering above the human was a red, empty heart-shaped object. This was Frisk, and under normal circumstances, their Determination-trait soul would have allowed him to have total control over the timeline, able to RESET, SAVE, and CONTINUE, as well as granting him a variety of other combat abilities. Now, however, their Determination had been extracted from their soul, rendering him weak and powerless.
To better understand how this situation came about, one must first look back to the beginning. For thirty long years, Frisk had been resetting the timeline after achieving the same "happy" ending for their adventure time and time again, and getting increasingly bored with it all the while, even enabling Hard Mode in the hopes of shaking things up. In the end, however, it was a fruitless endeavor, and ultimately, Frisk decided to just up and kill everyone and commit genocide, as though all the friends they had made were nothing more than toys.
Ultimately, at the end, Frisk had to face Sans in a fight to the death, and was killed multiple times for their trouble, though their Determination and ability to SAVE his progress allowed them to return from the grave time and time again to challenge Sans, before the horrendous guilt finally ate away at them enough that Frisk decided to abandon their murder spree and RESET the timeline.
However, what Frisk had failed to realize was that as they continued their "Genocide Run," they were unwittingly calling back someone known as Chara, whom many monsters in the Underground had mistaken Frisk for, and was apparently the first child who fell into the Underground after the Barrier that seperated monsters from humanity was created. They had then been adopted by the Royal Family, and raised alongside Asriel. The more lives Frisk took, the more they lost themselves and became Chara, who was decidedly not human anymore, but rather a demon.
When Frisk attempted to RESET the timeline and abandon his Genocide Run, Chara assumed complete control of their body and would have killed Sans had Frisk not broken free, sacrificed themselves and given Sans his soul, allowing the skeleton to finish off Chara and RESET the timeline, undoing Frisk's crimes and bringing back those lost because of them.
Unfortunately, though those who had died had been brought back, the damage done to the timeline itself was irreparable. Thirty years worth of resets, Hard Mode, and an aborted Genocide Run were the perfect ingrediants for causing things that no one wanted to have happen to occur. In all honesty, Sans was surprised the demented puppet master that was his Error counterpart, or someone from the same universe, wasn't trying to purge their timeline, it was so glitched up and distorted.
And sure enough, just as Sans had thought, something bad that no one wanted to have happen ended up happening, in the form of Chara Dreemurr, now a full-fledged demon, returning, their new existence fueled by pure Determination taken from the Amalgamates buried within the depths of the True Lab. To make matters worse, despite the combined efforts of Sans and Flowey, Chara managed to use Doctor W. D. Gaster's Determination Extractor to siphon Frisk's Determination and absorb it, giving them complete control over the timeline.
With their backs against the wall, Sans and Flowey retreated to Snowdin with the weakened and powerless Frisk in tow. Upon arriving at Sans' workshop, the skeleton immediately got to work on his pet project, the very machine he and Flowey were working on right now.
Groaning, Frisk lifted their head up and looked to see what the flower and skeleton were up to. Feeling Frisk's eyes on them, Sans and Flowey turned towards the young human.
"Hey… feelin' better?" Sans asked gently.
"Not really…" admitted Frisk. "What are you guys working on?" they asked.
"I'm tryna fix something here at the moment," said Sans, before turning his attention to Flowey. "Hey, Flowey, could you pass me the wrench from over there?" the skeleton asked, pointing in the direction the aforementioned wrench was in.
"Do I look like your stupid assistant?" snapped Flowey. "Get it yourself."
Sans' left eye glowed a bright blue while his right looked as though its socket was completely empty. "Please," the skeleton said, his voice a clear indication that it was not a wise idea to test him after the day they'd been having.
Heaving an irritated sigh, Flowey slinked over to where the wrench was. "Yeah, sure, whatever," the demonic flower grumbled as he picked up the wrench. "Take your stupid wrench!" Flowey said as he chucked the wrench at Sans, who effortlessly caught it.
"Thank you," Sans said as he continued working on the machine.
As Sans continued tinkering with the machine, Flowey took a glance at Frisk, who had climbed out of bed to get a better look at what Sans and Flowey were up to. Or more specifically, the flower took a glance at the human's empty soul that floated above their head.
After a few moments, Sans stopped working on his machine. "Alright, it's done," he said as he stood up and grabbed a nearby remote. "Let's hope it works this time…"
That caught Flowey's attention. "Wait… 'hope?' 'This time?'" he asked Sans, confused.
"How many times have you tried this before?" Frisk asked Sans.
"Eh, just a couple hundred times," Sans said with a shrug as he pressed the button on the remote. "But… if that demon child Chara managed to get back on their own… then I'm pretty sure I can bring him back…"
"'Him?'" asked Frisk, confused as the machine began to emit light that steadily began to grow brighter and brighter.
"You'll see in a moment. But, uh… you should probably shield your eyes a bit," said Sans.
Frisk and Flowey both shielded their eyes as the light coming from the machine began to glow brighter than their eyes could handle. Finally, with the brightest flash of light of all and a whooshing sound, Frisk and Flowey opened their eyes to find a smokey mist billowing out of the machine as a figure began to emerge from the mist.
It was another skeleton monster, tall like Papyrus, slender with what appeared to be two cracks in his head, one running up from his right eye, the other running downwards from his left eye. Both of his hands had a circular hole in them, as though a piece of them had been cut out. He wore a black coat with a dark gray turtleneck underneath, dark gray slacks, and black dress shoes.
"Heya," said Sans.
"Heya," said Doctor W. D. Gaster, Sans' father, creator of the CORE, and the original Royal Scientist, before cracking a smile. "Did you… mist me?" he asked Sans, who chuckled.
"Let's 'a-void' the jokes for now…" said Sans, a soft smile on his face. "We got a huge problem at the moment. Chara Dreemur's back, and they’ve taken control of the timeline from Frisk. Needless to say, your help will come in handy," explained Sans.
Flowey groaned and rolled his eyes at the two skeletons. "Your jokes are disgusting…" he grumbled, before something caught his attention. "Hey, Smiley Trashbag! Do we need to worry about that?" Flowey asked, pointing at the machine Gaster had just emerged from.
"Huh? Worry about what?" asked Sans before seeing what had caught Flowey's attention.
The machine Sans had just used to bring back his father was going nuts, shaking side to side like a leaf in the wind as electricity sparked around it, even throwing off bolts of lightning around the room.
"This isn't good… get down!" said Gaster as he called upon one of his hand-shaped weapons, this one with a green core, and used it to form a protective shield around himself, Frisk, Sans, and Flowey just in the nick of time as the machine exploded, pieces of it flying in every direction.
However, parts of the machine weren't the only things flying from it. Four decidedly humanoid-shaped entities were sent flying into the far wall, the biggest, most brute-like of them actually leaving a crater shaped like them in the wall before falling out of said crater and onto the ground.
As the room settled down after the explosion, Gaster dropped his shield so he and the others, except for Flowey, could get a better look at what, or who, had just come flying out of the now-destroyed machine and into their midst, and see if they needed medical attention.
Needless to say, they were quite surprised to find that it had been three monsters and a human, all unconscious, that had been flung out of the machine that was now lying in ruins.
One of the monsters was a female humanoid reindeer with flowing blonde hair wearing a red and green checkered sweater with a grey romper underneath. Firmly fixed onto her finger was a ring made out of what looked like metal thorns, reeked of powerful magic, and seemed quite painful to remove and put on.
The second of the monsters was female as well, and was clearly a brute, plain and simple. She had purple skin, shoulder-length black hair, a dark purple shirt with a white undershirt, tattered blue jeans, and purple and white sneakers. This monster honestly made Frisk a little nervous, as she looked as though she could bite one's face clean off.
The third monster of the group was admittedly something of a surprise. Although Frisk and the others thought he was a girl as well, closer examination revealed that not only was he a boy, but that he was a dead ringer for the late Prince of the Underground, Asriel Dreemurr, wearing green-rimmed glasses, a green robe with a pink scarf wrapped around his neck, and lying nearby was a matching green hat that seemed much too big for him.
I miss being fluffy, lamented Flowey as he looked at the doppelganger of the monster he used to be. I am so, so sick of being a flower… so sick of being numb… I just want to be Asriel Dreemurr again… more than anything…
The goat monster's resemblance to the late Prince aside, out of all four of these new arrivals, the human of the new arrivals really threw them all for a loop. They looked exactly like Chara Dreemurr back when he had been a human. They were even wearing the same green and yellow long-sleeved shirt, brown pants, and black shoes as Chara. However, the shaggy black hair that almost covered their eyes, and the tanned skin reeked of Frisk as well.
Speaking of Frisk, he couldn't help but feel as though this new human was familiar, like they were a long-lost family member that they had once been joined at the hip with. As for Sans, he felt as though he had "befriended" the human's mother, if one were to understand the meaning.
"We should take them inside your house, Sans, and examine them for injuries while we wait for them to wake up," said Gaster. "And personally, I would like to not only know why exactly the young goat resembles the late Prince Asriel, but why the human looks so much like both Chara and our young friend here," the doctor added, gesturing to Frisk as he spoke.
Flowey rolled his eyes in annoyance. "Ugh, seriously? We're gonna play doctor for four kids hailing from scenic who-knows-where while Chara has complete control over the timeline, and is poised to erase this world and everything and everyone in it at any moment? We don't have time for this!" he said.
"Eh, it's not a problem," said Sans with a shrug. "The only way Chara could possibly amass the power needed to erase this world and the timeline is if they were to slaughter literally every monster in the Underground, and considering that his existence his entirely fueled by Determination they leeched off those Amalgamates down in the True Lab, something tells me they won't be trying that. That demon child would need to find another way, and something tells me they would need the aid of an outside force to do it. We should be fine for now."
On that note Sans used his psychokinetic powers to haul the three monsters and the new human inside his house to receive care for any injuries they might have sustained. Following closely behind them, Doctor Gaster's mind raced at a thousand miles an hour as he dwelt on these four new arrivals.
He had a funny feeling that things were about to get very, very, interesting…

Chapter 2: The Fun Gang
Notes:
Hello, everyone! Jack of Knaves here, and welcome back to Interlopers! You know, given everyone's reaction to that first chapter, this may shape up to become my finest work yet! Truly, this is my chance to be a big shot!
Now then, a few things to go over. First off, yes, the Fun Gang is fresh off a not-so-fun Snowgrave Route, which means that Noelle is responsible for turning several innocent Darkners, as well as Berdly, into ice sculptures. While the guilt of this weighs quite heavily on Noelle's mind, Kris, although he's got his own feelings of guilt, writes off Berdly's fate as an accident, or self-defense at worst, as he told Berdly to let him and Noelle proceed, as in, he told Berdly to get out of the way, but Berdly took it the wrong way and attacked the both of them, Naturally, the guilt that Kris, the Soul, and Noelle feel about their roles in Berdly's demise will play a part in this fic at some point, but where that is exactly is yet to be determined. Most likely when Frisk vows to kill Betty and his LV hits 19, but I'm not certain yet, as I'm developing this on the fly.
Also, while I am indeed aware that Darkners need the Fountain of Darkness in their world in order to avoid being turned to stone, I would also like to point out that Ralsei seems to be exempt from this rule, as he seems to be able to run around the Cyber's World without becoming a decidedly not-so-fluffy paperweight just fine, so following that logic, Ralsei should be just fine running around the Underground and/or the Surface in this fic.
Furthermore, Kris, Noelle, and Susie's abilities have been altered due to the means of dimensional travel used, i.e. being yanked from their universe by a glitch with Sans' machine. One such ability is being able to switch from their normal appearance to their "Delta Forms" (aka their Dark World appearances) at will, as well as these forms now providing a variety of augmentations to Kris, Noelle, and Susie.
Also, due to being both Chara AND Frisk from an alternate world, Kris has both of their skills and abilities, as well as a few unique ones of his own, such as X-Slash, and is just as powerful as them.
Speaking of romance, I feel I should mention that, while Kris, thanks to the Soul’s influence, has developed normal romantic feelings for Noelle, Noelle still has the hots for Susie, but has also been influenced by the Soul into developing feelings for Kris because of Snowgrave, also, Susie doesn't see Noelle in that light, plus she harbors feelings for Lancer. What I'm trying to accomplish here is a natural shift of Noelle's affections from Susie to Kris, rather than being cheap and forcing the Kriselle ship into existence when clearly Noelle has feelings for someone else throughout Chapter Two, and this is set after that on the Deltarune front. In short, the Soul has laid the groundwork for Kris and Noelle to have a healthy romantic relationship, but Kris and Noelle need to build off of it.
Now then, I think that covers all I wanted to go over, so without further ado, let's get this show on the road!

Chapter Two
The Fun Gang
The Underground-Snowdin-Sans' And Papyrus' House
Susie groaned as consciousness returned to her. Her vision was fuzzy, but she could see a wood ceiling. She was lying on something cold and hard. It only took her a moment to realize that she was lying on the floor in somebody else's house.
Sitting bolt upright and quickly looking around, Susie was partially relieved to find that her friends, the human Kris Dreemurr, the bipedal reindeer Noelle Holiday, and the Prince from the Dark World, Ralsei, were lying nearby. However, that still begged the question of where the hell they all were, and more importantly, why were she, Kris, and Noelle back in their Light World clothes?
Susie reached over to Kris and started shaking them awake. "Kris, Kris, wake up!" she growled.
"No, wasn't me, didn't eat the pie this time, not guilty, I plead the fifth…" the human muttered as they returned to the realm of waking, and quickly came to realize that not only was Susie the one who woke them up, but that the place where they currently found themselves was not the last place they remembered being. "Uh… Susie? Where the hell are we? We're not in our Dark World outfits, so this isn't the Dark World… but, this place obviously is not the Computer Lab, let alone the Public Library…"
"First off, that's my line," said Susie. "Secondly, I have no idea where the hell we are, and third, we're not the only ones who made the trip here to scenic who-knows-where," she said, jerking her head towards where Ralsei and Noelle were currently lying unconscious.
Kris breathed a sigh of relief when they saw their good, fluffy friend and the reindeer monster that they had been neighbours with for as long as they could remember, were okay from the looks of things.
Kris frowned as a cold feeling of dread passed through them… Noelle might look okay on the outside… but was she okay on the inside? She had mentioned that she wasn't feeling well after that… presence… within themselves that they had been feeling for the past few days had gotten them to pressure Noelle into using that Snowgrave spell… a spell that Noelle didn't even know until she had used it to freeze Berdly in a block of ice. The fact that this strange presence that Kris felt within themselves knew about a spell that not even Noelle herself knew until it, through them, pressured her into using it… made Kris feel uneasy on a number of levels.
Okay, I'll be honest, I feel as guilty as you do about what we made Noelle do to Berdly, the fact that it gave that living meme Spamton the chance he needed to rise to power and that we more than likely tainted Noelle's pure soul notwithstanding... Damn salesman nearly killed us both before I called out to Noelle for help, a small voice that Kris associated with the presence, whispered in the back of their head. But, be honest, Kris, was Berdly REALLY trying to protect Noelle from you? Last time I checked, he thought himself superior to you, and was trying to get a seat on the throne of a new world order. That idiot could have destroyed us both had I not had Noelle use Snowgrave, and that would have ruined everything.
The presence made a thoughtful hum. You know, now that I think about it, considering the fact that birdbrain was attacking you, a case COULD be made that what happened to him was Noelle trying to protect you. I mean, it's not like anyone would believe I had anything to do with it the presence reasoned before heaving a sigh. Look, I won't tell you what to tell her, but you need to talk to her about what happened, and get that Thorn Ring away from her. We need Noelle to be in the right mindset, and she needs to be in possession of all her marbles, especially if we are where I think we are… and if that's the case, then which version is it…? Don't think it's Errortale or Underfell, thank god… and is the kid doing a Pacifist, Neutral, or, god forbid, a Genocide run? Either way, we should be okay for now.
Kris was pulled out of the presence's musings by the sound of Noelle and Ralsei waking up from their slumber. Pulling themselves up off the ground, Kris and Susie made their way over to Noelle and Ralsei, concern evident on their faces as they came to their friends' aid.
"Hey, there, you guys all right?" asked Kris as they knelt beside Noelle and helped her up, while Susie helped Ralsei up.
"Y-yeah, I'm fine, Kris…" Noelle said as her consciousness slowly started to return to her before she realized the place she found herself wasn't the last place she remembered being. "Um, Kris…? Where exactly are we? This doesn't look like the Computer Lab…"
"If I had to guess, I'd say we're in somebody's house… but the real mystery is how we got here." Ralsei said thoughtfully.
"Well, I think it's a safe bet we're not in the Dark World anymore, considering Susie, Noelle, and I are back in our Light Word clothes…" Kris said thoughtfully as they reached into their pocket and pulled out a mechanical pencil. "Dammit! Our weapons have turned back into useless Light World items…"
"Whoa, now, what's this about a Light World?" a familiar voice from nearby.
Kris, Susie, Noelle, and Ralsei turned to see a familiar-looking skeleton with a perpetual grin wearing a blue hoodie, black shorts, and fluffy pink slippers. Deciding to put on a friendly face, Kris smiled at the familiar skeleton.
"Nice to see you again, Sans… is this your house?" the human asked the skeleton.
"Nice to see you too, kid… even though we've never met before," the skeleton, Sans, said before blinking a couple times. "Whoa… gettin' a touch of the old deja vu… like you and me have had this conversation before… weird… anyways, yeah, this is mine and my brother's place, and I got some friends over who've got some questions for you guys…"
Sans then poked his head out the door and hollered "Hey, guys! Our guests are awake now! Get up here!"
A few moments later, a very unusual group of characters appeared in the room. What seemed to be a talking flower emerged from the ground, a stern glare on its face indicating that it didn't exactly trust the new arrivals, while entering through the door into the room was a rather tall skeleton similar to Sans with two fractures on his skull, one leading up from his right eye, while the second led downward from his left eye. His head looked a bit like an egg, and he had a pair of holes in his hands and wore a black long coat with a dark grey turtleneck underneath, brown pants, and black dress shoes. Accompanying the skeleton was what was unmistakably another human around the same age as Kris with tan skin and shoulder-length black hair wearing a blue and indigo sweater, brown pants, and black shoes.
Upon seeing this human, Susie leaned over to Kris and muttered, "Long-lost relative of yours, Kris?"
"Not that I'm aware of…" Kris replied. However, despite this, Kris couldn't help but feel some sort of connection to the other human, like they knew this other human intimately, despite the fact that this was the first time Kris had met them.
“So, where are we?” Susie asked, pulling Kris out of their thoughts.
“My house,” Sans replied with a confused look and a shrug.
“Yeah, we kinda figured that out but… how did we get here?” Susie pressed.
“It’s a long story. But, the short of it is, you arrived through my machine. It’s supposed to pull people from the Void, like I did with Gaster.” he gestured to the taller skeleton nearby. “I’m not sure how you got here, but it made some weird popping noises and you four tumbled out. Are you from the Void?” asked Sans. The confused looks on their faces clearly said no. “Well then, where are you from?”
“We come from Hometown. You know, here. I've seen your house before, and we've even talked once before,” Kris said.
Sans shrugged. “Only humans we've ever seen down here, at least, the only notable humans, are Frisk and Chara, but we don't talk about Chara for… certain reasons,” he said as he gestured to the other human.
“Down here?” Susie’s eyebrows knitted together as she crossed her arms and frowned “Where is ‘down here’?”
“The Underground. More specifically, Snowdin," Sans said nonchalantly.
Kris raced to the window, with Susie, Noelle and Ralsei in pursuit. They looked out and saw a snowy trail meandering by the house, with a snowy forest beyond. Further down the trail was a town, and several different monsters walking around. In fact, unless their eyes were playing tricks on them, a very strong possibility all things considered, Kris thought they saw another Susie hanging out with a clam girl that neither they nor Susie had ever seen before in their lives.
Kris stepped back, their mind racing about a thousand miles an hour. "I don't understand… We've seen this house before. In Hometown, it was autumn there, not winter! I’m not crazy, right?” Kris said as they looked at Noelle and Susie for support. They nodded.
Sans shrugged again. “This is my house, and as far as I'm aware it’s the only one of its kind.”
The taller skeleton, Gaster, stepped forward. “Perhaps where they’re from, there is another of this house, and another version of you, Sans. Perhaps they’re not from the Void, but perhaps, they’re from… another dimension.”
Sans crossed his arms. “Do they exist? Other dimensions, I mean?” he asked, sounding skeptical.
"Other timelines within our own dimension exist, do they not? I wouldn't say it is too far of a stretch for other dimensions to exist aside from our own," reasoned Gaster. "As a matter of fact, the Void could very well be considered another dimension itself. Perhaps the reason for our young friends' arrival in our dimension lies hidden in that theory…" he said before letting out a small chuckle. "Apologies, I just realized… We have neglected to introduce ourselves. I am Doctor W. D. Gaster, the, ah… former Royal Scientist who has been away for quite a lengthy period of time. Pleased to make your acquaintances."
Sans nodded, his smile as wide and beaming as ever. "I'm Sans. Sans the Skeleton. But, then you knew that already," he said.
"I'm Frisk. Just Frisk," the human, Frisk, said with a smile.
"Howdy! I'm Flowey! Flowey the Flower!" the small yellow flower said, a bright and friendly smile on his face.
Kris frowned at Flowey and stared at him for a moment. The teenage human didn't know why exactly, but they felt like they knew this flower from somewhere… and that they had been very close with it, but, Kris was pretty sure that they'd remember being best friends with a talking flower… assuming their father didn't try to either put it on display at his flower shop or scream about demon flowers and try to kill it with fire.
The presence within Kris chuckled. Oh, you are going to be so surprised when you find out who he really is… it said within Kris' mind.
"Nice to meet you guys," Kris said with a smile. "I'm Kris Dreemurr, and these are my friends, Susie, Ralsei, and Noelle," Kris said, gesturing to each of their friends in turn. Flowey, Frisk and Sans’ eyes widened as Kris said their last name.
“Dreemurr?” Frisk spoke softly. “But… that’s…”
“The royal surname,” Flowey finished.
"Well, well, well!" Susie said with a smirk. "Congratulations on your ascension, your Highness," she said as she took a bow before Kris, her smirk growing ever more devious. "You know… now that you're a certified Prince and all, you and Ralsei can finally hook up! Heh heh heh!"
The results were instantaneous. Ralsei turned beet red and suddenly started looking anxious while Noelle struggled to contain her laughter and an embarrassed look crossed Kris' face.
"Oh, come on, Susie! We've talked about this! While I admit that Ralsei is indeed a very cute and fluffy boy, you know I don't swing that way!" the teenage human said, embarrassment in their voice. "Moving on," Kris said, clearly eager to change the conversation. “I had a question.”
“Shoot.” Frisk said with a nod.
“You mentioned Chara. Who’s Chara?” asked Kris.
Frisk’s face clouded. “Chara… was a friend of mine. Sort of. But they’ve become some kind of demon. They took my Determination,” Frisk held up his hollow soul, eliciting a gasp from Kris. “And now they’re trying to do… something. We don’t know.”
Kris blinked as the presence within them spoke up again. Yep, that settles it, we're in the Glitchtale AU… but, then that means… oh, crap… we gotta deal with HER, don't we?
“Chara… took your determination?" Kris said aloud, tuning out the presence. "Jeez. How?”
“A machine. A determination extractor," explained Frisk, while a guilty look crossed Gaster's face for a moment.
“So what do we do?” Ralsei cut in. “How do we stop them?”
"Something tells me pacification is off the table…" Kris muttered.
"And I'm not certain my ice magic can do much to a demon…" Noelle muttered, causing an alarmed look to cross Kris' face as a particular memory crossed their mind.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold on a minute," Susie interrupted, a serious look on her face. "Kris, Noelle, Ralsei, can we talk in private for a moment?” Susie led the rest of her friends into a corner.
“What did you want to talk about?” Kris asked.
“Why are you guys worrying about them? We’re in another dimension, for Angel's sake! We need to figure out how to get home!” said Susie.
“Susie, these people are in danger!” Ralsei cut in. “We can't leave!”
“They seem capable, I'm sure they could do it by themselves. And besides, what if we get embroiled in this and never get home? What if another fountain is created in our world and we aren’t there to seal it?”
“Wait, what?” Noelle asked as she looked between her friends in confusion. “What are you talking about?”
“Nothing that concerns you right now, Noelle. Can you go talk to Frisk? You and I will talk in a little bit,” said Kris.
Noelle looked a bit sad about being left out. Kris turned back to the group, a guilty look on their face as they heaved a sigh.
“I feel we should stay. We don’t even know how to leave, and besides, something about Frisk and that flower… maybe we can learn something here that can help us in the future, especially if we go up against that Knight guy that's been mentioned a couple times in our adventures. And besides… no one, not even that prophecy, said our jobs as legendary heroes stopped at the borders of our dimension,” Kris said firmly.
Susie looked down pensively. “You’re probably right. I just don’t like that we’re so far away from home," she said gruffly.
Ralsei went to put his hand on Susie’s shoulder, but as he was too short, he put his hand on her arm instead.
“I’m nervous too, Susie. But we can’t dwell on it. We need to focus on something we can do, which is to help these people. Maybe when Frisk regains control over the timeline we can go back," Ralsei reasoned.
Kris nodded in agreement. "Yeah… hopefully…" they muttered as they and their friends returned to Noelle and the others.
"All right, the others and I were talking things over, and we've decided to help you guys stop Chara," Kris said. "But, before we head out, we need two things, the first being that Susie, Noelle, Ralsei, and I need weapons to defend ourselves with," said Kris. “Susie likes axes, Ralsei uses… scarfs… Noelle uses rings and I like swords.”
"Not to worry, I'm sure I can whip something up," Gaster said.
"Thank you, doctor. The second thing, however, is something I need to talk to Noelle about, in private," Kris said, an expression on their face that showed that they would not entertain an argument on this matter.
A spark of nervousness ran through Noelle, caused by the look on Kris' face. "O-okay," she said before following Kris outside. With a single look at each other, Frisk, Sans, Flowey, and Susie made a beeline over to the window, all of them intent on eavesdropping on Kris and Noelle, while Ralsei heaved a sigh, pressing his hand against his forehead, while Gaster chuckled and shook his head before walking to begin work on the new arrivals' new weapons.
Outside The House…
"A-all right, Kris, what did you want to talk to me about?" asked Noelle, although a suspicion was lurking in the back of her mind.
Kris sighed. "I wanted to talk about… what happened to Berdly.... you know what happened in the Dark World wasn't a dream, right? I mean, how could it possibly be a dream, considering we've been sent to, of all things, an alternate universe?"
Noelle gasped, her suspicions confirmed, as a horrified look on her face appeared, tears starting to form in her eyes. "Th-then... what I did to Berdly... that was... oh my Angel, what have I done?!" she cried, sobbing into her hands.
"Hey, hey, none of that," Kris said, grabbing Noelle's hands and rubbing their thumbs across them in comforting circles. "Look at me, Noelle," Kris said, the utmost seriousness in their voice.
Slowly, Noelle's tear-soaked eyes rose to meet Kris' crimson ones. "Look, Noelle… what happened to Berdly... it was an accident, okay?" Kris said firmly. "I pressured you into using a spell you didn’t know. All the guilt of what happened lies with me and me alone. If nothing else, you were just trying to protect me. Remember, Berdly was trying to get a seat on the throne of Queen's new world order with all that smartopia crap. If he truly wanted to protect you, he wouldn't have been trying to kiss up to Queen, he would have protected you from her too. But, instead, he threw in his lot with the bad guys. Not to mention he rammed you off the roller coster. What kind of friend does that? What if you got hurt, or worse, because of that?" Kris reasoned as Noelle sniffled.
"I'll be honest, I feel as terrible as you do about what happened to Berdly… but, at the end of the day, what happened to him was an accident caused by my own hand. You have nothing to blame yourself for. Do you understand?" Kris said firmly, to which Noelle nodded, pulling her hands out of Kris' and wiping away her tears.
"Y-yeah… I understand, Kris… it was an accident," Noelle sniffled sadly.
"Good…" Kris said with a nod. "Now, with that being said, we can't take the risk of that happening again. So, I'm gonna need that Thorn Ring back. It was only after Spamton sold us that thing that you were able to use Snowgrave after all, right?" Kris said, a serious look on their face.
"Y-yeah, sure. G-guess this is why you asked Doctor Gaster if he could make me a new weapon too, huh?" Noelle said as she grabbed ahold of the Thorn Ring and, with a decent amount of effort and pain that was clearly etched on her face, pulled it off her finger, although there was a decent cut on her finger from where the Thorn Ring had been, with some blood leaking from it onto the ground, and handed it to Kris.
"All right, now let's head back inside, and get that finger of yours taken care of," said Kris as they put the ring in their pocket and turned to walk back into the house.
Noelle nodded. "Okay," she said, before following Kris back into the house, doing her best to ignore the dull throbbing on her ring finger from where the Thorn Ring had been.
As well as the feeling of her sins crawling on her back that Noelle knew, in her heart of hearts, still existed, even with Kris' reassurances...

Chapter Three
The Real Monsters
The fact that Doctor Gaster was able to create weapons for Kris, Susie, Ralsei, and Noelle in such a short time would have been impressive… except, from what the Fun Gang could tell, what Gaster had created was decidedly not any form of weaponry the four interdimensional travellers had seen before. They were black boxes, seemingly made of fabric, and they looked about as combat capable as Alphys.
"What the Hell is this?" asked Susie as she picked up one of the objects. Almost instantly, the object transformed into a very impressive looking axe, while her attire transformed into a black and magenta vest with a black tank top underneath, magenta pants with a black belt that had a golden heart shaped buckle, spiked bracelets and armlets on both arms, and black boots.
"Hey, Susie! You're in your Dark World clothes! But, how'd that happen?" asked Noelle in surprise. Kris, meanwhile, reached over and picked up their own version of the object Susie had picked up, only for the object to morph into an impressive sword and shield, and their skin suddenly turned a pale blue color while their clothes morphed into a form fitting black bodysuit with steel boots, steel gauntlets, a steel breastplate, and a cape with the exact same blue and indigo pattern that Frisk's sweater had draped over their shoulder.
Gaster chuckled. "So vulgar, Miss Susie… in any case, I call those devices 'Every Weapons,' able to transform into the perfect weapon or weapons for whomever touches it, and it only works for whomever touches it first. As for your costume changes… perhaps the way your abilities function have been altered due to your abrupt interdimensional displacement," theorized Gaster. "Regardless, everything about you four requires further research and study."
“Ok,” Ralsei said as went and picked up his Every Weapon, and it instantly morphed into a minigun. Ralsei dropped it and backpedalled. “Umm, there’s something wrong with that one!” the young goat cried out.
Susie made a choking noise, causing Ralsei to look over and see Susie had a hand over her mouth, attempting and failing to stifle her laughter.
“What are you talking about? It’s the perfect weapon for you!” Kris commented, obviously holding back their own laughter, their comment causing Susie to collapse into helpless laughter.
Gaster smiled and chuckled. "Apparently a minigun is the perfect weapon for Ralsei," he said.
Ralsei glared at the doctor as he picked up the minigun, which immediately morphed into a very stylish-looking scarf. "Real funny, doctor," he grumbled. Gaster chuckled again, and Susie, pulling herself up off the ground, subsided to sniggers.
Frisk walked in with a grin on their face. “What’s going on here?” they asked. “I heard-” they stopped, staring at Kris. or more accurately, the cape on their shoulder. Kris looked at Frisk, then the cape, then Frisk’s turtleneck sweater, the pieces coming together in their mind, not that they made much sense to them in the long run.
Frisk shook his head, their confusion increasing the longer they spent around the four interdimensional travellers. “First they show up in their outfit, now they’re wearing a cape that looks like my sweater…” they muttered. Frisk looked Kris dead in the eye, a serious look on their face. “Kris, we need to talk.”
“Okay…” Kris said as Frisk led them to the hall outside the room and turned to them.
“Kris… I need to tell you something. The outfit you were wearing when you fell out of the machine looks just like Chara’s, and that cape… well…” Frisk gestured to their shirt.
Kris nodded. "Yeah, I know… I'm admittedly trying to figure that one out. To be honest, when I first saw you, it felt like I knew you, like really well, even though this is the first time we've ever met…" they said before a thought crossed their mind. "You know… my adoptive older brother and I used to read comic books that involved dimension-hopping sometimes, and the hero sometimes met and even fought against alternate versions of themselves… Maybe this is a similar situation?" suggested Kris.
Frisk frowned, thinking Kris' theory over. "I don't know… it could be… my area of expertise with quantum physics is more in line with continuing, saving, loading, and resetting the current timeline rather than interdimensional travel… that kinda thing seems more like Doctor Gaster's area of expertise…" they said.
"Yeah, you're right…" Kris said, rubbing the back of their neck.
A small plop noise sounded from nearby, causing Frisk and Kris to turn to see that Flowey had popped up nearby.
"Hey, are you kids done gearing up and… apparently playing dress-up," Flowey said, sounding confused as he looked at Kris and his altered clothes. "Smiley trashbag says there's somewhere we need to go and something we need to pick up first before we head out to fight Chara."
“His name is Sans,” Frisk grumbled, “but, okay."
"Yeah, yeah, whatever," grumbled Flowey before he plopped back into the ground.
Frisk heaved a sigh before turning to Kris. "Sorry about Flowey… he's kinda a jerk, but it's not really his fault… he was just a normal flower before he was injected with Determination. But, without a soul, he's incapable of feeling… well, anything," they explained.
You would know what that feels like… the presence in Kris’s mind chuckled.
Kris forced it down and nodded. “Ok. let’s go," they said.
The Barrier-A Short Time Later
The group arrived at the chamber where the six souls were stored. Sitting in the middle of the room, they glowed in their containers, still alive after all these years. Sans counted Justice, Bravery, Kindness, Integrity, Patience and Perseverance. They were all here. The middle container was empty. Frisk touched their own chest, knowing whose soul was intended for that jar.
“Ok, here goes.” Sans crooked his fingers. At his command, the souls burst free of their containers. They floated up to him, and Sans looked at them for a second before flicking his hand sideways, sending them towards Flowey.
Flowey’s eyes went wide in surprise. “Wh-what?” he stammered. “Why me?”
“You’ll be more useful this way," explained Sans.
Flowey scowled.“I still hate you," he grumbled.
“Sure, why not?” Sans said nonchalantly as he smirked at Flowey.
“Six souls? Jeez,” Susie whispered to Kris. “That's a lot of power for a flower.”
“Flower power!” Noelle, now clad in a white dress with brown sandals that gave her the appearance of an angel, with a very beautiful diamond ring on the now-healed finger that once held the Thorn Ring, giggled, a smile on her face as she did so.
Frisk, Gaster, Sans, Kris, Susie, and Ralsei chuckled at Noelle's joke while Flowey rolled his eyes before taking the souls. A moment later, a flash of white light blinded the entire group.
The True Lab-Later That Day...
Chara Dreemurr, a demonic looking teenager with a knife for one of their arms and brown hair wearing a green and yellow sweater, brown pants, and black boots, was walking toward the barrier when they heard a thump, followed by another, and then another.
A slow smile spread across Chara's face. “So… predictable,” they muttered as they glitched out, and glitched back in at the barrier, before returning to where the True Lab as a fourth thump reverberated across the area, making Chara’s teeth rattle. They gazed out, and saw the sight they were expecting to see.
A giant monster, armed with huge claws, no legs and a giant tv for a head towered over Chara, staring defiantly down at them. On its right, Gaster stood next to Sans and Frisk. And on the left side…
Chara’s eyes narrowed as they gazed upon the four who stood on Omega Flowey's left side. Who were they?
A purple dino girl in a tank top with a heart locket buckle and an axe. Behind her was a bipedal deer, or was it a reindeer…? In all honesty, Chara never could tell the difference between the two, but whatever she was, she was wearing a white dress that made her look like an angel from heaven and a very pretty ring on her finger. Standing nearby was, much to Chara's dismay, another human that looked alarmingly similar to themselves in their usual form as a human, with blue skin and armor with a cape that looked like Frisk’s sweater over their shoulder.
In all honesty, Chara felt odd looking at this human, as though they should recognize them, even though this was clearly the first time they'd ever met… then all thoughts of the new human disappeared as they saw the fourth new arrival.
Chara stepped back, eyes wide. “Asriel…?” they muttered.
Ralsei stared back in confusion. “Uh… hi? What did you call me?” he asked kindly.
This goat, why does he look so much like Asriel? Chara thought before they shook their head. No, he can’t be… Asriel’s right there, Chara thought, looking over at Omega Flowey. It must be a coincidence.
“Jeez Kris," Susie said, shooting a fang-filled smirk at her human companion. “Maybe it was a good thing I didn't bite your face off when we went to go get Ms. Alphys the chalk... if you had that under your face, that'd haunt me in my nightmares.”
“That is if my spirit didn’t haunt you. After all, there's Officer Napstablook, who's to say I couldn't become a ghost if I kicked the bucket,” Kris joked back.
And that's if I didn’t try to get revenge first! The presence spoke up. I'm pretty sure I could've convinced the doctor to let me construct another Goner Vessel.
Kris pushed the presence away again. They were unnerved enough by how much Chara looked like them, they didn’t need the presence spouting nonsense as well.
“When did you try to bite Kris’s face off?” Noelle asked, looking at Susie nervously.
“Uh… not important," Susie said, quickly changing the subject. “Why is Chara staring at Ralsei like that?”
“Chara would prefer not to be spoken about like they are not in the room,” Chara interrupted, “And to answer your question, it’s nothing that concerns you,” they said as their face stretched into a demonic smile, eyes glowing red. “But, in all honesty, isn’t this hilarious?” they said as they let out a short, evil laugh.
Gaster opened his hand, and seven more appeared above him. Sans stood on a Gaster Blaster as five more blazed into existence. Omega Flowey raised its arms, preparing an attack. Noelle raised an arm, a glimmer of frost tingling at her fingertips. Susie hefted her axe, Ralsei spun his scarf and Kris pointed their sword at Chara.
“This is your army? A traitorous television-faced abomination, a forgotten scientist, a comedian, a pathetic human who can’t even fight, a goat with a scarf, a deer with ice magic, a purple dinosaur with an axe, and another human with a sword…" Chara taunted before focusing their gaze upon Kris. “You know, now that I think about it, I sense something about you… the same thing coming from Frisk. Your sins are crawling up your backs, the both of you… I know full well what Frisk did, but you… other human…”
“My name is Kris,” Kris said defiantly, tightening their grip on their sword.
“Kris, then… you did something just as bad… or perhaps worse... something to do with the deer, if I'm not mistaken…” Chara said, pointing at Noelle, who looked down, unable to meet Chara’s demonic red gaze. “Ah, yes… I see now... a pure and innocent soul, corrupted and driven to the brink of insanity by your authority… or perhaps, you were merely the puppet of the one truly responsible… even so, that does not excuse you of your sins…"
As Chara spoke, Kris felt their grip on their sword tightening as what felt like both their own anger and the anger of someone else began to inch ever closer to the danger zone, while Ralsei and Susie looked at Kris in confusion, unaware of what Chara was talking about.
Chara laughed, an unholy and demonic sound as it rang out across the True Lab. "I may be a genocidal megalomaniac thanks to Frisk going on their little genocide run, but I can say this much… the real monsters out of everyone in this room… are the three of us humans!" Chara said before laughing again.
"SHUT UP!!!” Kris yelled, their anger finally reaching the breaking point. Much to Kris' surprise, they heard the presence’s voice shouting along with them. They brought up their sword and slammed it into the ground. Red energy spread across the floor, lighting it up like Christmas.
Chara’s eyes widened as they recognized their own attack, Special Hell. Meanwhile, Omega Flowey grabbed everyone else and moved them away, just as the floor erupted in a massive burst of power.
When it subsided, Kris was standing opposite Chara, sword planted in the ground, sweating profusely.
"Well… that's new…" Kris said, giving a small chuckle as they spoke.
Chara, meanwhile, stumbled, having been disoriented by having their own attack used against them. Kris pulled their sword back out of the ground and stumbled back, exhaustion clear on their face as Ralsei came to their aid and restored their power.
Chara quickly regained their composure and spoke again. “Well now, that was interesting. Very much so...” they said, their grin growing even wider. “I… have a small surprise too…” they held up six balls of power, glowing brightly in each of the colors of the human soul, aside from Determination. “You never got to use the Determination extracted in the past…” they brought the orbs to their chest. “I’m excited to see how long you’ll survive.”
The orbs disappeared, and coated Chara in white light. When it disappeared, they was holding their knife, which was flashing different colors in the air. They leveled it at Kris, and spoke again. “Come,” they said.
Kris charged with Susie at their back while Ralsei and Noelle hung back to provide support and long-range attacks via IceShock. Chara brought their knife back, and it extended in a flash of blue light. Kris just had time to raise their shield before the enlarged knife slammed down. Chara whistled, causing Kris and the Fun Gang to look up to find the demonic teenager with a green force field in front of them. Omega Flowey hurled what looked like atomic bombs at Chara. The bombs slammed into Chara’s shield but failed to put a dent in it.
“Keep that button blocked, Gaster, and keep the kid safe!” Sans said, indicating Frisk and Chara's very conveniently placed Save File.
Gaster nodded, and a green force field appeared around him and Frisk. Sans flew forward on a Gaster Blaster, his eyes narrowed with laser precision. Chara swung their knife out, sending a purple slash of energy flying at Sans. Sans fired his Gaster Blaster, intercepting the attack. They collided in an explosion, however Chara's attack cut clean through the Gaster Blaster's beam and kept going.
Sans’s eyes widened and he teleported out of the way just as the slash pulverized his Gaster Blaster, rematerializing behind Chara and before launching bones at them. Chara teleported up, and swung their knife down only to be intercepted by a green forcefield. Gaster summoned another hand, this one red, and fired a black energy blast at Chara, only for Chara to teleport out of the way again, unwittingly allowing Noelle to catch them by surprise with her IceShock attack, freezing Chara's legs in place, if only for a moment.
"Now then, let's see how you deal with my X-Slash!" Kris said as they swung their sword in a X shape, and two red energy slashes in the shape of an X flew at Chara. Chara blocked with another forcefield, but the shield cracked. Chara then pried themselves free from Noelle's ice trap and teleported again, their knife pointed at Kris, and fired a Justice Shot at them. Susie sliced it out of the air, and, acting on instinct, flung her arm out.
A giant beam of red energy flew at Chara at high speed. Chara tried to block with their forcefield, but Susie's attack broke through the barrier and sent them flying backwards before they were smacked to the ground by Omega Flowey, who opened his hand and shot vines at Chara, only for them to slice them away, only to find their path blocked by Gaster. Susie, meanwhile, looked at her hand with a surprised expression on her face.
"Whoa… didn't know I could do that…" the purple dino girl muttered to herself.
"Focus on the fight, Susie!" hollered Ralsei.
Meanwhile, Frisk’s force field disappeared as Gaster summoned six red hands, and fired a combined blast at Chara, who felt themselves get pulled into the blast by Sans’s telekinesis before being yanked down toward several bones with a Gaster Blaster pointed at them. Acting quickly, Chara fired a Justice Shot at the Gaster Blaster, and sliced the bones away. As they landed safely on the ground, Chara heard the crackling of freshly-materialized ice as their arm suddenly felt extremely cold. They looked down, and noticed their knife arm was coated in ice. Looking up, Chara saw Noelle, ice curling around her fingers. Chara set off a Bravery Bomb in the ice, shattering it at the cost of damaging their arm before sending a blast at Gaster. Gaster quickly dodged the attack, only for the blast to change direction, shooting toward Frisk instead.
Sans teleported into the oncoming blast's path in an attempt to block it, only for Gaster to intercept the full brunt of the blast. The doctor stumbled, seriously hurt from the force of the hit.
Sans’s eyes darkened with anger. He had just gotten his father back after decades of being imprisoned in the Void after saving his life, and there was no way in hell that he was going to lose him again.
As Ralsei and Noelle ran to Gaster's aid to heal him, Sans teleported into the air, and laughed. “I don’t like to use my real special attack… I get bone tired after that, but…” he said as he closed his eyes. When he reopened them, a blaze of blue and yellow energy shot out of the left one. Hundreds of Gaster Blasters appeared on each side of him. “You deserve it,” Sans snarled as he pointed his hand and, as one, all the blasters fired.
Chara tried to summon a shield, but it shattered almost instantly, resulting in Chara being enveloped in a massive explosion. Kris felt their jaw drop in shock at the display of raw power they had just witnessed. There was no way in Hell Chara could have remained in one piece after that attack, let alone survived.
Not dead, look out! the presence called in their head. Kris saw a red slash fly out of the smoke, straight at Omega Flowey. They went to stop the attack, but Susie was faster. She pointed her axe at it, and a giant burst of red energy annihilated the attack. The dust cleared, and they all saw Chara’s soul, now blacker than obsidian, cracked in half. As they watched, the soul snapped back together and Chara reappeared, half their body now covered in a black substance that reminded Susie and Kris of that one movie with the alien symbiote.
“I have a question for you, Asriel, Kris…” Chara said, looking at Omega Flowey and Kris as they spoke. "Do you know what trait black is?"
Kris stepped back in shock at what they'd just heard Chara call Flowey. They remembered the comment the presence had made when Flowey had introduced himself.
Oh, you’re gonna be so surprised when you find out who he really is…
Could it be…? Was Flowey actually... Asriel? No, no way. That wasn't possible!
Chara spoke again, pulling Kris out of his thoughts. “It’s HATE,” they said, an evil grin on his face. “And I have a LOT of it to share!” they cried as they held up their knife, conjuring a giant ball of black energy before hurling it at the group. Omega Flowey stepped forward to meet the oncoming attack, and Kris saw the six souls spinning in front of him before they fired a giant white beam, pushing the black ball away.
When the beam faded, Flowey was lying on the ground, just a little flower again, completely and utterly powerless. The small flower tried to lift his head, but failed. The human souls were completely out of power, looking as though they were nothing more than heart-shaped rocks. Looking around, Kris saw that Susie, Noelle, Ralsei, Gaster, and Sans were all looking exhausted and out of energy, and Kris themselves wasn't feeling that much better.
“HELP!” a nearby voice screamed. Kris looked over, and saw Frisk, eyes wide, mouth open, a look of sheer terror on their face.
Chara laughed, slow and dark. “But nobody came,” they laughed. They pointed their knife at Flowey, and fired. Kris watched in horror as Frisk ran forward, placing themselves in between Chara and Flowey.
But, before they could do anything to save Frisk from certain death, Kris saw the red shell that was Frisk’s soul fill up, gleaming the brightest red Kris had ever seen. A red shield appeared in front of Frisk, blocking the shot.
Frisk grinned. “Guess what, Chara? I got my Determination back. Now, to give it to the one person here who needs it most!” they said as the souls suddenly regained their colors. Frisk threw their soul at Flowey, and the other six followed. Flowey’s eyes widened, the seven souls surrounding him before entering his body, before he glowed a bright white, blinding everyone.
...
Kris opened their eyes. They were floating in a grey area. They looked around. On their right, they saw Chara, staring at something else. Kris followed Chara’s gaze, and saw something that made their heart stop.
It was Asriel Dreemurr. Clad in a blue and white robe with the Deltarune crest on it and black marks on his face, emanating an aura of sheer, absolute power. While this Asriel was certainly in the same age range, that was the only resemblance that Kris saw with this doppelganger and the Asriel Kris knew, who had once been dating Noelle’s sister, December "Dess" Holiday, before her disappearance, and who was currently enrolled in college, and was expected to return to Hometown next week.
“Finally," said Asriel, his hands clenched into fists and his eyes shut tightly. "I was so, so sick of being a flower…" Asriel said before opening his eyes and giving Chara a warm smile. "Hey Chara,” he said, meeting Chara’s gaze. “It’s me… your best friend.”

Chapter Four
Dreemurrs
"Sans…" a voice said from the edge of the Sans' subconscious as he slowly returned to the waking world. As his consciousness slowly returned to him, he realized that his body was wrapped in something akin to a blanket. His eyelids slowly blinking open, Sans found Papyrus, clad in his Battle Body, minus the cape, standing over him, and that the blanket-like something was Papyrus' cape.
Upon seeing Sans awake, Papyrus smiled. "Sans! Are you okay?" he asked his brother.
"Uh, yeah," said Sans, rubbing the back of his head. "Just… bone tired at the moment…"
"WE WERE SO WORRIED!" cried Papyrus. "UNDYNE AND I HEARD A LOUD BANG, AND I COULDN'T FIND YOU ANYWHERE! THEN WE GOT HERE AND YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS LOOKED LIKE THEY GOT HURT! WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME YOU NEEDED MY HELP WITH SOMETHING?! AS YOUR BROTHER IT IS MY DUTY TO HELP AND PROTECT YOU-"
"Whoa, hey, calm down," said Sans, his usual grin looking more sheepish than usual. "I'm okay, really…"
Papyrus gave Sans a warm smile. "Well, if you say so, brother…" he said before heaving a sigh. "I'm glad you're okay… by the way… who are they?" Papyrus asked, pointing at Susie, Ralsei, and Noelle. "The dinosaur girl that looks like Clam Girl's friend Suzy and the deer called Undyne 'Officer,' and seems to think she's something called the 'Chief of Please.' Also, what is that huge ball over there? Asgore tried to break it with his weapon, but… it didn't even leave a scratch." Papyrus asked, pointing at the ball of which he spoke.
Sans sighed as he rubbed the back of his neck. "Right… you might want to bring everyone over here… this is going to take some explaining…" he said.
Inside The Bubble...
Silence lay heavy in the air. Nothing moved, no one spoke. Three figures stood in the center of the giant gray bubble they were imprisoned in, staring at one another. Kris, Asriel, Chara. All powerful warriors. All connected. All silent.
Asriel broke the silence. “Chara, please, we can-” he started to say only for Chara to interrupt him.
“Shut up, Asriel,” Chara snapped.
“Hey, that’s rude, buster!” Kris taunted, pointing their sword at Chara with a smirk on their face. “Telling people to shut up isn’t nice!”
Chara gave Kris a look that would stop a train in its tracks before giving an amused, sad chuckle. “You two are idiots, you especially, Kris," they said as a grin spread across their face. “You don’t know what Frisk did, do you? Tell them, Asriel. You saw everything, after all," they laughed.
Asriel looked down, his fists clenched and a hurt look on his face as he growled in reluctance.
"Very well… if you don't tell Kris, I will," Chara said as they faced Kris, their demonic red eyes causing shivers to run down the blue-skinned human’s spine. “After countless pacifist runs, where Frisk befriended everybody and saved the underground, they eventually got bored with getting the same 'happy' ending. So, they decided to change things. Every monster they met, they killed. Toriel was the first to die.”
Kris stepped back at the mention of their mother’s name. They knew that she not only existed in this dimension and was the Queen of the Underground from previous conversations with everyone, or maybe she was the former Queen if her relationship with Asgore was anything like their parents' back in his dimension. Either way, Toriel having been Queen meant that Asgore was likely the King, which made Asriel a certified Prince. But… what Chara had just said… Frisk had killed her? The best mother anyone could have asked for, who made wonderful butterscotch pies that Kris just couldn't get enough of, and she was murdered in cold blood? All because Frisk was bored with getting a happy ending over and over again?
"After mommy dearest, Papyrus was the next victim. Then Frisk had themselves a battle against a true hero, Undyne the Undying, who grew too determined for her own good and started to melt before turning to dust. Nobody could stop them. They grew stronger, and stronger," Chara continued. "And in the end, they faced Sans, But, they couldn’t win. Sans killed them over… and over… and over. They lost their courage, and tried to reset the timeline. That was when I intervened. All I'm trying to do is finish what that little genocidal maniac started.” Chara concluded.
"Don’t you see, you two?” Chara said as he spread his hands diplomatically. “I’m not the bad guy here. Frisk is. Everyone paints them as a kind and innocent little flirt of a pacifist who wouldn't hurt a fly… except they’re not. It makes me sick that they think they’re above consequences, that they can just toy around with everyone and get away with whatever they want…"
As Chara spoke, Kris could have sworn they heard the presence make a noise that sounded as though they had been wounded. Looking over to Asriel, Kris thought they saw Frisk standing behind Asriel, tears running down their face. Memories began to flash into Kris' mind… the trail of frozen bodies they and Noelle had left in their wake as that presence, through them, resorted to gaslighting and coercion to bend Noelle to their will, making her their puppet and murder weapon... it was the same thing that Frisk had done, but in Kris' case, it was worse, so much worse, because the presence, through them, had corrupted Noelle's pure and innocent soul, driving her to the brink of insanity, and forced her to turn so many innocent Darkners, and even Noelle's good friend Berdly, however much of a headache he had been for Kris, into ice sculptures, rather than having the stones to do it themselves… whatever crimes Frisk may have committed in another timeline, they were guilty of far worse sins... the presence may have influenced them into making those choices, but Kris still did them anyway, despite how uncomfortable they felt with them…
"Now then, Asriel, tell me something… Frisk gave you their soul when they were still alive, didn’t they?” Chara asked, pulling Kris out of their thoughts.
Asriel nodded. “What does that have to do with anything?” he asked.
“I assume you want to break the barrier at some point," said Chara. “But if you use Frisk’s soul to do that, they’ll actually die. And never be able to go back to their body.”
The presence inside Kris' head let out an uncomfortable hiss. Oh, crap… That's not good. If Frisk dies permanently… I don’t know what will happen to the timeline… or to any of us, it said.
“So what do you want, Chara?” Kris said aloud, their hand tightening around their sword. “Power? Control over the timeline?”
“No,” Chara answered. “Something very different. You see, I finally have enough Determination to create this…” Chara raised their hand, and a ball of red energy flashed into existence. It flew forward, and with a flash it transformed into a button with the word, big and red, ERASE.
Oh god… the presence gasped, horror in its voice. Oh, that’s bad. If Asriel presses that… poof. Everything and everyone is gone, you, me, Susie, Ralsei, and Noelle included… and I don't know what effect our erasure will have on our own timeline!
Dread settled over Kris as they realized just how much danger everyone in both this and their own timeline were in by proxy from that button's mere existence, especially considering the presence was terrified of what could happen.
“This is the only way to stop this, Asriel.” Chara said, pointing at the button. “If we don’t erase this timeline, Frisk will use your friends as toys forever. However, I can’t press it, someone else needs to.”
“Wait…” Asriel said. “You said Frisk got us the same happy ending multiple times...”
“And near the end, you asked for forgiveness, didn't you, Asriel?” Kris said, looking at their older brother's counterpart. In all honesty, Kris didn’t know how they knew that, the knowledge just popped into their head. In their mind, Kris saw Asriel, looking no older than themselves and a dead ringer for Ralsei, minus the glasses, enough tears to fill a small swimming pool running down his face as he begged Frisk for forgiveness. A moment later, Kris saw Frisk give Asriel a hug, their own tears of sympathy running down their face. “And Frisk forgave you, didn't they?"
Asriel nodded, a solemn look on his face. “Yeah... and just like me, Frisk deserves a second chance," he said as he raised one arm, and an exclamation mark appeared underneath the ERASE button, before a rainbow-colored bolt of lightning descended from the heavens, smashing the button into pieces, which quickly dissolved into nothingness.
"I'm sorry, Chara, but erasing this timeline was never an option, especially when we have guests from another timeline here!" Asriel said firmly. "I won't accept your offer, Chara! I forgive them!"
"Well said!" Kris said with a proud smile as they entered a starting stance with their sword and shield. "Now, let's finish this once and for all!"
"Agreed!" said Asriel as he started to hover in the air, preparing his attacks.
Chara growled in anger. “Fine!” Chara snarled. “If you want it this way… so be it.”
With that, Chara pointed their knife at Asriel, and it flashed the colors of the rainbow. Asriel raised one arm and lightning bolts struck the ground around Chara, who barely dodged the attack.
Each impact from the lightning bolts shook the ground, causing Kris’s ears to ring as they watched on. This version of Asriel was the most powerful thing they had ever seen, and they and their friends had faced some powerful foes in the form of Jevil, who claimed that he could do anything and was capable of the most powerful attacks that they and the others had seen at that point, not to mention that Jevil always went for Ralsei, and Spamton NEO, who had nearly defeated Kris in one on one combat before the presence that had taken residence within them called out to Noelle for help, resulting in Spamton getting frozen solid. This version of Kris's big brother was seemingly capable of tremendous feats of power that bordered on godlike.
Chara fired several slashes of energy at Asriel, causing Kris to leap into action and slice them out of the air with their sword. Chara snarled in annoyance before lashing out with two more energy slashes. Kris went to stop them, only to realize they weren’t moving. With a demonic grin, Chara glitched out of existence and reformed behind Asriel. Asriel turned to attack Chara, and as soon as he turned the energy slashes launched themselves, bypassing Kris entirely and slamming into Asriel's back, causing him to growl in pain and giving Chara an opening to strike him with what Kris somehow recognized as a Big Shot, sending Asriel flying backwards.
Yelling in rage, Kris leapt at Chara, sword aimed at their opponent’s heart. Chara met their thrust with a tilted knife and Kris, expecting resistance, slid to the side, only to realize too late that Chara was feinting. Chara swiped at Kris, breaking through their armor and opening a red gash on their side, putting them out of commission for the time being.
Asriel yelled in anger and summoned a white gun looking object, pointing it at Chara. The weapon fired a series of rapid-fire energy bullets at Chara. The projectiles slammed into the demonic teenager and knocked them away from Kris before they could even move to finish them off, before a bigger blast from Asriel's weapon sent them sprawling to the ground.
Pulling themselves up, Chara gave a demonic snarl as more of the black substance began to creep over more of their body, before they lunged at Asriel, who summoned a pair of white blades and parried the attack, initiating a sword-to-knife fight between the two siblings. Chara rapidly teleported around Asriel, swinging at him with a series of different strikes, which Asriel parried with ease.
Finally, Chara let out a snarl of frustration and teleported high into the air before summoning a black ball of energy and hurling it at Asriel, who summoned a weird looking skull in the shape of a goat, which opened its mouth and absorbed the ball. Chara then conjured darkness that coalesced into their knife, making it blaze with black fire.
“Welcome to my very Special Hell,” they cackled before they brought the knife down and a slash of red energy tore toward Asriel at high speed, however, Asriel merely raised his hand, conjuring a single bolt of lightning that blocked it.
By the Angel's Light, Kris thought as they watched the two siblings continue to clash. If Asriel attacked with an intent to kill, just how quickly would Chara die?
Then Kris noticed something strange. There was now only one spot on Chara's body that wasn't covered in the black substance. And it was traveling up their collar. As Kris watched, a gold heart shaped locket emerged from Chara’s shirt. Kris looked over and saw an identical one on Asriel’s chest. Friendship markers, perhaps…
Asriel took a deep breath. “Kris… I can’t kill Chara,” he sighed. “But I can try to change their mind.”
“What…?” Kris asked, confused.
“Not all of Chara is gone, or they would have thrown the locket away," Asriel explained.
Chara stared at the locket in their hand, and Kris could have sworn they saw something… different in Chara’s eyes. A sadness. A longing. Then they grinned and the moment was gone.
“What makes you think I care about such a silly thing?” Chara asked, before they tossed the locket in the air, and destroyed it with a single slash. Asriel clapped his hands to his mouth in horror at the sight while Kris’s eyes grew sad.
“See?” Chara laughed evilly. “You really are a-” Chara suddenly stopped short. Kris gasped as they realized something was dripping down Chara’s cheeks: tears. Asriel grinned.
“We’ll take the hate out of them!” he declared. “It’s feeding off of their Determination, so we need to get rid of that first!”
“But how?” Kris asked.
“I got that covered.” Frisk said as they materialized next to Asriel. “Hey,” they called out, “little help here?”
“I-I don’t need anyone now! You hear me?! No one!” Chara snarled as they lashed out with a powerful strike.
Asriel raised his hand to block, but it wasn't necessary as a green shield appeared in front of him, absorbing the strike, as the green essence of what looked like a chef appeared from thin air.
“Order up!” the chef said before forming into a green sphere and forming around Asriel’s hand, imbuing him with the power of Kindness.
Chara teleported behind Asriel and attempted to slash him from behind, only for Asriel to dodge out of the way and tag Chara with the green essence wrapped around his hand, weakening the demonic teenager greatly as the essence of purplish figure appeared and gathered around Asriel’s other hand, imbuing him with the power of Perseverance, which he launched at Chara, who seemed to be too distracted by something, perhaps lost in their memories, to notice the essence heading their way, as it struck them in the back.
Finally pulling themselves out of their memories, Chara snarled in anger. “STOP IT!” they screeched as they sent a crimson slash at Asriel, only for the yellow essence of a cowboy to appear and fire a single shot that destroyed the slash.
“Ah don’t think so pardner,” the essence said. “Ah didn’t willingly give up my Soul to set all monsterkind free just ta let you erase it all!”
The essence then formed into a sphere that gathered around Asriel’s hand, imbuing him with the power of Justice, before Asriel tagged Chara with the essence, causing them to become lost in another memory of them and Asriel, causing them to glitch away to get some distance as an orange, blue, and light blue essence appeared.
“Once more into the ring!” the orange essence, the essence of Bravery, declared.
“All these years, waiting for this! It is time to strike fast and true!” the Light Blue essence, the essence of Patience, cried.
“...I’ll make you proud, Mom…” the Blue essence, the essence of Integrity said quietly, before they and the other two essences formed into spheres that Asriel launched at Chara. The Patience essence was a direct hit, but the Integrity essence missed, allowing Chara to try to get a strike in on it, only to be blocked by the Bravery essence, allowing them to strike Chara before the Bravery essence struck Chara themselves.
“That just leaves one left!” said Frisk as a crimson essence formed on Asriel’s hand, filling him with Determination before Asriel launched that essence at Chara, bringing them to their knees as Asriel changed from his older-looking self to that of a child no older than twelve, maybe thirteen.
“Chara, please…” said Asriel, desperation in his voice. “I know you’re in there.”
“Wha-what are you talking about?” Chara asked, their black exterior beginning to shatter and their voice cracking as they spoke and tried desperately to hold back their tears. “This is me! This is who I am! I’m here to make sure that the timeline gets erased, as it was supposed to be!”
“You’re wrong…” said Kris as they pulled themselves to their feet, still clutching their injured side to glare at Chara dead in the eye.
“HA!” snarled Chara, turning to glare at Kris. “How would you know anything about m-”
“I know quite a bit about you, actually,” said Kris, looking down at the ground. “Humanity… hurt you. No matter where you went, you were reviled, scorned, feared, treated like an outcast for being different in some way from everyone else. You hated humanity, with every fiber of your being, you couldn’t stand to look at so much as a drawing of another human in a book. And then you found the monsters. And everything changed. Finally, you found a place where you belonged. The Dreemurrs took you in and raised you as their own, right alongside their pride and joy, Asriel. You made so many friends, friends that in retrospect, you probably should have done a better job staying close with. They didn’t see you as creepy or something sinister, they saw you as a kid who was in dire need of love and a family,” Kris said, as both they and Chara were getting close to tears, the latter’s dark exterior continuing to shatter. “The monsters had more human decency in them than all of humanity combined.”
“On a more personal note,” said Asriel as he and Kris approached Chara slowly and carefully. “You like chocolate… and drawing… and playing with toys and Mom’s butterscotch pie… and certainly… you wanted to save monsters.”
“Get away from me…” cried Chara in anguish.
“You wanted to free everyone, because you care about them all,” said Kris.
“No!” snarled Chara in agony.
“STOP PRETENDING LIKE YOU DON’T CARE!” yelled Asriel, coming to a stop right before Chara. “I know you, Chara… because… I care about you more than anybody else.”
Chara froze for a moment. Then their knife turned pitch black before they made to stab Asriel with it, only to stop dead in their tracks as, tears flowing from his eyes, Asriel wrapped his sibling in a hug.
“We’re best friends after all, aren’t we?” sobbed Asriel.
Chara froze in place, until suddenly, the entirety of their dark exterior shattered, revealing Chara in their entirely human form, as they embraced Asriel, tears of their own running down their face.
“I’m sorry, Asriel…” sobbed Chara.
“It’s okay, Chara…” said Asriel as he rubbed Chara’s back. “Everything will be okay now… I’ll never leave you again, okay? We’ll be together forever.”
Chara, their eyes still full of tears, smiled sadly. “I’d love that Asriel…” they said.
Suddenly, Chara’s eyes went wide as a white crack appeared on their leg. Oh no… they thought as Asriel continued speaking.
“I don’t care if the barrier is broken… as long as I can be by your side.”
“Asriel…” said Chara as the shattering of their body started to become louder, and more noticeable. “I wish we could have spent more time together…”
Asriel looked at his sibling with confusion. “Chara… what do you mean…?” he asked.
“The only thing keeping me in this world was my Determination…” explained Chara.
“But, now it's running out, isn’t it?” said Kris, a terrible feeling of realization dawning on them. “And without Determination, you’ll…”
As if to confirm Kris’ suspicions, Chara glitched out of existence. “Chara!” cried Asriel.
“Though…” said Chara’s voice. “I’ll be able to give you something before I leave…”
“Chara, don’t leave!” cried Asriel.
Chara, however, did not appear to hear him as their body continued to shatter. “You gathered different traits throughout our battle, didn’t you? But, you don’t have a vessel for them.”
“Chara, no! Don’t disappear!” begged Asriel as he darted towards Chara, as the aforementioned traits flew out of him and towards Chara.
“...and what’s left of my soul is the perfect vessel for you…” continued Chara, still seemingly unable to hear Asriel as they held up the empty shell of their Soul, even as their body continued to shatter.
“TAKE ME WITH YOU!” howled Asriel. “DON’T LEAVE, PLEASE!” he cried.
“Heh…” said Chara with a sad, wistful smile. “You always were a crybaby…” They then turned towards Kris as their body began to shatter in earnest. “...take care of him for me, will you?”
And with that, Chara Dreemurr, shining with a brilliant white light, shattered into nothingness as the traits flew into the shell of their Soul, which hovered in place, waiting for Asriel to take it.
“Frisk… Kris… thank you both… for everything…” said Asriel. “I won’t need your soul to break the barrier now, Frisk. You’ll be able to go back to your body, and regain control over the timeline, as well as your save files and menus.”
“Now then… let’s do this!”
The Surface - Later That Day…
What happened after the barrier was destroyed was a whirlwind of emotions for everyone present. First, there was the emotional reunion between Asriel and the local versions of his and Kris’ parents, Toriel and Asgore.
And then there was the declaration that, until such a time as they were able to return to their own dimension, Kris, Noelle, Susie, and Ralsei would enter into Toriel and Asgore’s care, not that any of them minded in the slightest, of course.
And then, as the freed monsters stood before the exit to the Underground, overlooking the forest and the nearby city in the distance, Sans looked over at Frisk, a clear look of concern on his face, before he pulled Frisk aside to talk.
“So, uh… I’ll get straight to the point,” said Sans. “Because of one of these ‘errors,’ I can remember everything from these past timelines… even the one where you killed everyone… right now, though… we have yet another ‘good ending.’ Admittedly, one that is… quite unique, but uh… be honest with me kid, when are you gonna reset?”
Frisk looked incredulously at Sans, shocked that he would even suggest such a thing. “Sans, I promise, I won’t-” Frisk started to say, before Sans cut them off.
“I said be honest,” Sans said threateningly. “Look, if you got bored enough to do... that... then… I don’t really have any guarantees that you won’t reset this time, do I? Just, do me a favor and let me know when, ‘kay-”
Before Sans could even finish speaking, the sound of something shattering could be heard, drawing everyone’s attention, as Frisk brought their fist down on the Reset button, shattering it to pieces.
“There,” Frisk said as they turned towards Sans. “That enough of a guarantee for you, Sans? No more resets, no more do-overs… from now on, I will only continue onward. I just hope this doesn’t come back to bite me later…”
Sans nodded. “You made the right call, kid, and for more than one reason,” he said before sighing. “Look, kid, I’ll be honest with you. The timeline is in worse shape than I thought. The walls between it and other timelines are razor thin, and if that Kris kid and his little Fun Gang could get here by accident from their dimension, then… who can say what else can get here, be it by accident… or on purpose.”
Woods-Later That Night…
A glitching rift appeared deep in the woods a short ways above the ground, and falling through it before it closed was what looked like a teenage human girl covered in blood and cuts wearing a green zip-up hoodie with a white t-shirt underneath, black jeans, red sneakers, red leather gloves, and a rainbow colored scarf.
Groaning as she sat up and looked around, Chara Dreemurr, the Royal Judge who served under the benevolence of King Sans, was going toe-to-toe with that bastard, that dirty brother killer. She’d thought her Determination, her desire to avenge her brother, Asriel, would be enough to see her to victory… but, it hadn’t been enough. Though, if she were honest, there was a part of Chara that wanted to lose that fight, wanted to let Frisk kill her so she could reunite with her loved ones, Azzy most of all, in the afterlife. Perhaps that had something to do with it?
Regardless, before Frisk could land his killing blow, everything around her glitched and disappeared, and then, she found herself here… wherever here was.
Her left eye turned black and crimson, as a red trail of energy drifted off of it. Yeah, there was something seriously wrong with this timeline. The wall between it and other timelines had become razor thin, even crumbled in some places, perhaps even this timeline’s walls between realities were eroding, which might explain how she got here. More importantly, her powers felt different here. Stronger. More potent. She felt as though the power of her Soul could crush Mount Ebott into dust beneath her heel…
Chara pulled herself up off the ground and tried to take a step forward, only to growl in anger and agony as her legs gave out. No… she wouldn’t let it end here! What would Azzy say if she just gave up and died in this place?
Her Soul flaring with Determination, Chara rose once more to her feet, and limped forward. She would make it. She had to make it. She would find her way back home, and she would kill that dirty brother killer, the demon she’d been fool enough to think was the one in the world… someone she’d thought she loved, a pretty mirror in every sense of the phrase, someone she wouldn't have minded starting a human family with one day. Until he turned out to be a dark reflection and took everything from her. But, until then, until she could get back home and finally destroy Frisk, she had to keep going... she had to carry on… she had to.
For Azzy…
Notes:
And thus concludes the chapter! Indeed, from what I’ve been able to gather, there is a decent length of time between Seasons 1 and 2 of Glitchtale, as Undyne became a cop (interesting coinkydink, don’t you think?) and Toriel became a teacher, and all that takes time, so I figured it’d be fun to have a new arc involving Storyshift Chara and a few other variants from across the multiverse woven in to bridge the gap.
Now then, about Storyshift Chara. I assume it's been mutually agreed that she’s a teenage female, as that’s what most fan art I’ve seen of her indicates. As you might have guessed, this Storyshift Chara is from a Genocide Run, and had actually developed feelings for Male Storyshift Frisk, only for it to turn out that he was in fact a dirty brother killer, which needless to say, pisses off Chara almost as much as it breaks her heart, ie very. Of course since Kris looks like Frisk… uh-oh.
Now, that being said, as I already had these four chapters at least partway primed and ready to go, I was able to do daily updates. Not so much for this point forward. In other words, Chapter Five will take considerably more time to complete and publish, so please, be paitent.
In any case, if you liked what you saw here, then be sure to kudos, bookmark, comment, subscribe, and I’ll see you guys next time as Asriel and Kris have a little chat about Kris' brother and Hometown!
Chapter 5: A Human's Pain
Notes:
Hello, everybody! Jack of Knaves here coming at you with another exciting chapter of Interlopers! Now, I have heard everybody's complaints about how thus far the story has been basically Glitchtale with the Fun Gang. I KNOW, all right? And that's why we're not jumping into Glitchtale Season 2 right away. No, instead, we're doing a sort of Interlude arc that shows how things got to be where they were in Glitchtale Season Two. After all, Toriel, in this dimension/timeline still needs to undergo proper training to become a caretaker of young children, and Undyne still needs to complete Police training before she can become a cop like in Glitchtale. DA RULES BEND FOR NO MONSTER NOR MAN!!!!
Additionally, I have just been informed about Kris' Deltarune Wiki Page, and I will say this. While their gender is open to interpretation, I don't think that gender need necessairly equal pronouns. So, for the record, in this story, in regards to what's in their pants, the canon versions of Frisk, Chara, and Kris are all male, but they use they/them pronouns. As for the various versions of KFC from all across the Undertale Multiverse, I think I can play a bit more fast and loose with them. After all, in the grand scheme of the multiverse, anthying can hadplen, and anything is possible.
So, to reiterate, Glitchtale Season 2 is a ways out yet. In the meantime, please, enjoy what I've got planned for you until then. Let us begin!
(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)
Chapter Text
Chapter Five
A Human's Pain
Determino - Newer Home - Asriel's Room
Asriel frowned in thought. It had been a few days since the monsters had made their triumphant return to the surface, and while most of the panic and fear had died down, the humans here were still wary of the monsters. Asriel sighed. He hoped that their fear would die down in time.
In one of his rare moments of brilliance, As-no, he was Asriel again, not Flowey, so he was Dad now. In any case, in one of his rare moments of brilliance, Asriel's father had proposed that they prove their value to the humans of Determino by attaining employment alongside the humans. While most everyone was still looking, Toriel had taken to the idea of teaching a preschool or kindergarten like a duck took to water, and Undyne had become interested in becoming a police officer, which Asriel understood to be something akin to the Royal Guard for a specific town, and that there were other such forces that acted as the keepers of the peace on a larger scale.
Doctor Gaster and Alphys, meanwhile, simply continued doing that which their lives had already been devoted to, that of course being science. They had to, especially if they were to get Kris, Ralsei, Susie, and Noelle back home to their dimension, and keep tabs on the ever-deteriorating fabric between their dimension, and their timeline, lest they get some unwelcome visitors with evil intentions, or something worse happened to their timeline and dimension.
Speaking of Kris... there was something about them that felt... weirdly familiar. Something that felt like being around both Frisk and Chara at the same time.. and then there was their reaction to Chara telling them about Toriel's murder. They had looked absolutely devastated about her death in the other timeline, like it had been their own mother who had been murdered, which would make sense as they had said their last name was in fact Dreemurr. And then there was the way Kris looked at him... like they knew him, like personally, intimately, knew him, like Chara did... it made him wonder... if there were other dimensions in addition to other timelines... and if Kris was a Dreemurr himself... did that mean there was... another Asriel Dreemurr where Kris came from, one whose parents had taken Kris in as their own, who became Kris' brother and best friend forever, like he had been with Chara.
It honestly flooded the young goat's mind with questions that terrified him as much as it excited him. Was this other Asriel still alive? Was he well and truly dead? Was he still stuck as Flowey? Did this other Asriel even exist? What could his life have been had it not been for the war between Monsters and Humans that his forefathers waged so long ago, or if they had managed to actually win said war?
On top of that, the only thing he knew about this Hometown place was that it was apparently "Autumn" there, which Asriel now knew to mean that the leaves had turned beautiful colors, and fallen off the trees in preparation for winter, and that there was apparently another version of Sans and his house there.
Asriel sighed. There was only one way he was going to get his answers, and that was directly from Kris' mouth.
The goat boy got up and made his way into the kitchen, checked the time on the wall clock and saw that it was past noon. With a smile, Asriel opened up the fridge and grabbed a can of Mountain Dew (that in Asriel's opinion, tasted nothing like mountain dew, and had given him enough energy he thought he was gonna destroy all of Determino a tremendous blast of power if he stayed still for too long, only to eventually feel completely drained of energy and as a result, passed out on the floor. His mother had apparently described what he'd experienced as a sugar rush and a sugar crash) and a bottle of fruit punch, before making his way over to Kris' room and knocking on the door.
"Yes, what is it?" came Kris' voice.
"It's me, Flow-erm, Asriel," said Asriel. "I was hoping you had time to talk about something."
"Sure, come in," said Kris.
Asriel opened the door and let himself into Kris' room, which was... oddly uncomfortable to be in, with its barren walls, a single dresser, a lamp, a bed with stone gray bedspread and sheets.
It... almost feels like a prison cell... thought Asriel before shaking his head and entering Kris' room and sitting down next to them, handing them the can of soda before turning the cap on his own bottle of fruit punch.
"So... what'd you want to talk about?" asked Kris.
Asriel cleared his threat. "I've... been thinking about how your surname is Dreemurr, like me, Mom, and Dad's... your parents... are they...?"
Kris chuckled. "I suppose I should have seen this coming up sooner or later," they said. "Yes, my mom and dad are the Toriel and Asgore of my dimension."
"Are they still...?" Asriel asked nervously.
"Honestly, comparing the four of them? Your parents' relationship runs circles around mine. Your Mom and Dad are trying to mend fences, if at least for your sake. My Dad's a complete trainwreck living off of jarred pickles, desperate to get back with Mom. Mom, meanwhile... can't stand the very mention of Dad," Kris said, bitterness in their voice.
"I... see..." said Asriel. "And was there a...?"
Kris took a swig of his pop. "Yeah, there's a version of you there. Everyone in Hometown loves Asriel. I can't walk downtown without people asking me about him, how he's doing, when he's coming back, memories people had of him and me, mostly him-"
"Wait, coming back? He's not there anymore?" Asriel said, a note of worry in his voice.
And do I detect a hint of jealousy, young Dreemurr? the Presence asked before Kris shoved it down again.
"Well, he's not dead or anything, he's just off at Mount Ebott University," explained Kris.
Asriel tilted his head in confusion. "Mount Ebott Uni-what now?"
"You know, college," said Kris.
Asriel's face lit up in understanding. "Oh, you mean cool leg. Or was it colleg... did he get a skolarships?" he said.
Kris looked at Asriel, a baffled expression on their face. "Cool what?" they said, baffled.
Asriel shrugged. "That's what the Temmies called it," he said.
"Yeah, that checks out," said Kris before a dark scowl formed on their face. "And yes, he did get a scholarship. But, you wanna know something? He only became the golden boy he is now because of what happened to Dess."
"Who's Dess?" asked Asriel as he took a drink of his fruit punch.
"Noelle's sister," said Kris before a mischievous smirk formed on their face. "And my Asriel's girlfriend."
As it turned out, Asriel picked a bad time to take a drink. Entering a coughing fit as Kris whacked him on the back to clear his wind pipe.
"He-he has a- I-I have a-" Asriel spluttered, unable to wrap his mind around the idea of him having a girlfriend. Who in their right mind, aside from his parents, could possibly love someone like him?!
Ah, but he technically wasn't you, was he? a nasty voice that sounded suspiciously like Flowey's whispered in the back of Asriel's mind. That Asriel didn't have a body count, now did he?
Asriel ignored the voice and stammered out. "Wha-what happened to her?"
Ooh, do I smell a lore drop? the Presence within Kris said.
Kris could almost see the Presence rubbing its non-existent hands in excitement as they pushed it away and looked away from Asriel. "She... went missing one night while she, my Asriel, and I were exploring an old bunker on the outskirts of town. I... don't really remember much of what happened, but... I do know it was the start of everything going wrong. My Dad was chief of police at the time, and in charge of the investigation into her disappearance. He either found something and kept it quiet or was too incompetent, because rumors started swirling around about Dess being a poor deer caught in his truck's headlights. 'The Chief's Chariot Cannot Be Stopped!' everybody said. Load of crap if you ask me. But, either way, those rumors did cause the Dreemurrs and the Holidays to become far more distant, and they were responsible for my parents' relationship issues."
"Asriel, meanwhile, threw himself into his studies and schoolwork. We actually have an overdue library book that my Asriel hasn't returned in years because Dess wanted to learn how to draw like him. He started racking up trophy after trophy, medal after medal, prize after prize... and yet, it didn't make him remotely as happy as he was spending time with Dess."
"I, meanwhile... probably because of what happened and how young I was... got sent to a hospital to get therapy because of the trauma I experienced that night... imagine... imagine my shock when I came back home to find my parents divorced, and that my brother had gotten a free ride to college, and I was all but left alone without my best friend forever. No letters, no phone call, no nothing to tell me what happened while I was away..." said Kris as their fists clenched and they struggled to hold back their emotions, prompting Asriel to throw his arms around Kris and wrap them in a tight hug. A moment later, Kris' room door opened and Susie, Ralsei, Frisk, and Noelle entered, likely having heard Kris and Asriel's talk, and likewise wrapped Kris in a hug as the dam finally broke.
...
The Presence inside Kris was almost brought to tears from Kris' story. It knew that the other Asriel made what time he could for Kris while he was still around, but... it sounded like after Kris got sent off to therapy, Asriel up and ditched them without so much as a goodbye, or at least a "have a nice life," all because of some hochi mama, as a certain salesman would have put it, that he lost because of his and her own recklessness.
What an asshole!
And then there was Toriel and Asgore... did it not occur to them, in the slightest, to let their other child know what was going on between them?! It was their responsibility, hell, it was mandatory, that they, as parents, kept their child in the loop about such things.
The Presence sighed. If it ever got its custom-made Vessel back, it was going to have words with the Dreemurrs, and make sure they knew just how badly they screwed up in their relationship with their son and brother. In the meantime though... Kris was hurting something terrible. Considering the Presence was piloting them like a mech suit, the least it could do was make sure they got at least some happiness out of life. However, there was only one way it could think of to help make sure that happened.
If it had a face, the Presence would be grimacing. It swore to itself that it wouldn't do this, that it wouldn't pull her strings again after what happened with the bird nerd, but... this time... it was for a good cause. Maybe it was a bit unethical, sure, but all it would be was a little nudge. If all went as planned, everything would progress naturally.
This needed to be done, because Goddammit, Angeldammit, whatever-other-deities-existed-in-this-multiverse-dammit, after everything the kid's been through, Kris Dreemurr deserved some happiness in the shitshow that was their personal life.
And so... it pulled a certain set of strings and made them ring.
Don't let them be alone with their pain. Help them heal from it, and in turn, I've no doubt they will help you heal from yours, the Presence commanded. Please... give them a chance to be happy... and in turn, they will give you that same chance.
Now... proceed!
