Helping Hand

Summary:

It meant something that out of all of the alphas Kakashi knew he had come to Iruka for help.

Work Text:

Iruka was grading student papers when the trapped floorboard outside his apartment squeaked. It was a normal sound in an apartment building this old and overlooked by visitors. Iruka's trap worked better than a doorbell. It gave him enough time to put down the paper in his hands before Naruto barged in. He was the only person who ever visited this late.

Iruka frowned when Naruto didn't appear. He stood up to open the door and peek outside.

"Hello, Iruka-sensei," Kakashi greeted him with a subdued wink.

Iruka reflexively inhaled as he suppressed the urge to shout and got a nose full of a scent he wouldn't have expected from the jounin. But it would explain why he was at Iruka's door in the middle of the night.

"Come in," Iruka urged in a low voice. The hallway was not the place for this conversation.

Iruka waited for Kakashi to step into the apartment and closed the door behind him. He quickly activated a few seals that would keep anyone from overhearing. His apartment complex was a mix of civilian and shinobi renters. It was better to be safe than sorry.

"Iruka-sensei?" Kakashi asked with mild curiosity. He looked at the seals on the walls and raised an eyebrow.

Iruka blushed and scrubbed his hand across his nose. His actions could have been alarming. He was an alpha activating a bundle of privacy seals after an omega had stepped into his territory. Kakashi wasn't a normal omega though. In a contest of strength between him and Iruka, he would win every time.

"I know you aren't hiding your scent but that doesn't mean you want everyone to know," Iruka explained.

Kakashi blinked in surprise and then laughed softly. He laughed as he sunk down to sit on the floor and laughed as he touched his forehead to his knees.

"Kakashi?" Iruka asked in alarm. He crouched down next to Kakashi and reached out to touch his shoulder.

"You can smell it already," Kakashi muttered into his knees.

"It's faint," Iruka offered tentatively. Someone who was less familiar with the scent might not know what it meant. The only reason Iruka knew was because he worked with young children and met with parents frequently. "It must be early."

"It's about five weeks. I think. It could be six," Kakashi revealed while raising his head to look at Iruka.

"That's very early," Iruka observed.

"I do want it. Her. Them," Kakashi blurted. He grabbed Iruka's hand and pressed it harder into his own shoulder. "I never thought I could get pregnant."

Iruka wondered why. There had to be a story behind that. He taught children about Konoha's history every day and historically Hatake omegas tended to have large families. It was only the Great Shinobi Wars that had whittled the clan down to one.

"Then I'm happy for you," Iruka congratulated. "Did you need help putting in your leave? I know the paperwork is annoying."

Kakashi shuddered and clutched Iruka's hand tighter. "I can't. Not yet. They'd want to know who knocked me up."

It finally dawned on Iruka why Kakashi was at his house this late at night. He needed an alpha from Konoha to claim his baby. If he'd gotten pregnant on a mission, the baby could be whisked away for security reasons.

"Move in with me," Iruka blurted.

Kakashi looked up at him in surprise.

"That's why you're here, right? You need an alpha to claim the baby as theirs. I will." It was not a hard decision. Before tonight Iruka would have claimed their relationship was friendly but not close. It meant something that out of all of the alphas Kakashi knew he had come to him for help.

"We could say it was a one-night stand," Kakashi volunteered cautiously.

"Is that what you want?" Iruka probed. "It would be more believable if you moved in with me. And an attentive alpha is harder to dismiss if someone wanted to separate you and the baby. I can be there to take care of them if you need to run missions." Iruka paused. He might be getting ahead of himself. Maybe it wasn't a mission baby. Maybe the other parent was someone in the village who wanted to claim the baby but couldn't for political reasons. "Unless the other parent would object."

"He's not a factor," Kakashi snorted. Contempt shined in his face as he turned his head to glare at the wall. "Don't worry about another parent."

"Then I won't," Iruka agreed. Whoever the other parent was, they had effectively abandoned Kakashi and his unborn baby. They didn't deserve another thought.

"You would really let me move in with you? I'm a terrible roommate," Kakashi warned.

"It will take some getting used to," Iruka admitted. "I've lived alone for a long time. I have habits that will probably annoy you too. But I would like to live together."

Iruka could argue that it would be easier if Kakashi moved in. Their scents would mingle and help disguise Kakashi's pregnancy. Kakashi wouldn't have to hide his condition inside Iruka's apartment. A longer association would provide a more romantic story for the shinobi rumor mill.

The truth was much simpler. Iruka wanted him to. He had always been attracted to Kakashi but their respective statuses had kept him from trying for more. He would not have expected Kakashi to come to him for help. Iruka hoped that meant Kakashi saw him as trustworthy and reliable and he wanted to prove it.

"I'll want to have my ninken around," Kakashi insisted.

"That's fine as long as they don't chew up any of my student's papers," Iruka reassured him. It made sense that he would want to keep his summons close. As the pregnancy progressed more of his chakra would be diverted to the baby. Iruka couldn't be there all the time. A pack of ninken would be comforting.

"I'll want to be kissed," Kakashi added quickly.

"What?" Iruka asked in surprise.

Kakashi looked away but the tips of his ears were red and he hadn't let go of Iruka's hand. He probably had said what Iruka thought he did.

"Kakashi," Iruka coaxed him to turn his head back. "That won't be a problem."

Kakashi looked at Iruka in disbelief but slowly tugged his mask down to bare a clean-shaven chin. "Prove it."

Iruka didn't need to be asked twice. He kissed Kakashi's lips sweetly and felt intoxicated by the way Kakashi's scent bloomed around him. The budding scent of a pregnant omega was drowned out by eager lust. Iruka could have kissed Kakashi all day.

"Will you move in with me?" Iruka asked when they paused to take a breath.

"Of course," Kakashi smiled with kiss-swollen lips. "Where else would I live but with the father of my baby?"
