Chapter 1: Laura Lee

Chapter Text

(Lottie Matthews)

*Author’s Note: Hello! I hope everyone enjoys this new fanfic inspired by Yellowjackets and just know that the characters won’t be 100% accurate but I’ll try my best to make the experience fun for everyone.

 *September 5th, 1995*

*Wiskayok, New Jersey*

Who is Lottie Matthews? Most people at Wiskayok High School know her as the daughter of the prestigious Malcolm and Emilia Matthews. But do people truly know her…

The classroom was lively, filled with students talking, playing jokes, and just filled with energy.

Lottie entered the classroom, and once she did so, she scanned the classroom to look for her seat, and once she did, she began to walk to her seat.

During this, a boy named Andrew began to speak to his friends about Lottie, placing his feet on an empty desk.

“The so-called queen bee herself has arrived. I mean, Lottie really thinks she’s all of that because she’s rich, talk about stuck up or what?” Andrew spoke to his friends annoyedly while they laughed in agreement.

“Yeah, that’s why nobody hangs out with her outside of mandatory shit. Who wants to be around someone like her?” One of Andrew’s friends responded in agreement as he chuckled.

Despite the noise in the classroom, Lottie heard those comments, which made her frown as she rested her head on the desk.

“I’m not stuck up at all, they don’t even know me. If they only just talked to me..” Lottie thought to herself in disappointment as she sighed, staring out the window.

Lottie continued to stare out of the class window, finding peace in her ritual until it was interrupted by the sound of her teacher announcing his presence.

“Alright, butts in the seats. Class is in session, folks.” The teacher greeted the class in a formal voice as he entered the classroom, placing his clipboard on the desk.

The teacher’s name was Mr Wilson, and he was a man in his thirties who appeared to be balding but still good-looking.

Lottie’s attention turned towards the teacher as she prepared herself for attendance, and she didn’t like it much for this class.

She had to get up and announce her presence, which encouraged more people to whisper lies about her.

“Alright, let’s start attendance, y’all know the drill. Stand up and announce yourself when your name is called.” Mr Wilson instructed the class as he grabbed his clipboard to begin attendance.

And so names were called, each one inching closer to Lottie's name, and she knew her moment was arriving.

“Laura Lee.” Mr Wilson called out while he looked at his clipboard before looking up.

At that moment, Lottie, for whatever reason she couldn’t figure out, stood up at the same time as Laura, thinking her name was called, which prompted some classmates to whisper and snicker.

Lottie felt her cheeks growing hot as she quickly sat down in embarrassment, lowering her head down as she heard Mr Wilson silencing the students.

Once the class settled, Mr Wilson resumed taking attendance.

“Alright. Let’s try this again, Laura Lee.” Mr Wilson spoke once more in a stern voice, looking up to see Laura standing.

“Present, Mr Wilson.” Laura spoke formally before sitting back down on her chair.

Lottie felt embarrassed at her mistake, and she wanted to get out of that classroom and pretend she didn’t exist at that moment.

“Why did I stand up? Gosh, I’m such an idiot..” Lottie thought to herself in defeat as she heard more names being called.

Lottie sat in her stupor before her name was finally called by Mr Wilson.

“Charlotte Isobel Matthews.” Mr Wilson called out before looking up to confirm the attendance.

Finally, Lottie stood up, and she quickly spoke.

“P-Present.” Lottie responded before quickly sitting back down, still feeling embarrassed from earlier.

And so the rest of the class went smoothly as the bell rang, indicating it was time for lunch.

Lottie slowly rose up from her seat, packing her supplies on her back as she quickly went towards the door.

“The way that girl looked at me. I hope she didn’t think I was trying to steal her attention or whatever.” Lottie thought to herself as she quickly exited the classroom.

Once Lottie exited the classroom, she took earbuds and a Walkman, gently placing the earbuds in her ears before playing Don’t Forget About Me by Simple Minds.

Once the song started to play, Lottie began walking across the hallways, going past the sea of faces she usually saw throughout the day.

Lottie walked past two girls chatting amongst each other by the lockers, one with long reddish hair and one with short black hair.

Lottie walked across the hallways until she made a pitstop at the ladies' restroom, opening the door to reveal a brightly lit room with four sinks and four toilets, and she walked to the third sink from the door.

The sound of the faucet water running could be heard as Lottie turned it on to splash her face with water, bits of it getting on her long hair.

“Get it together, Lottie. You can get through this day.” Lottie whispered to herself as she stared at her reflection in the mirror.

There was a moment of silence besides the occasional buzzing from the lights as Lottie continued to stare at the mirror; however, this would be interrupted by the sounds of the door opening.

The sudden sound quickly alerted Lottie, making her jump as she stared at whoever was entering the restroom, and it turned out it was Laura Lee.

“O-Oh, sorry if I startled you.” Laura apologized in a formal voice as she looked at Lottie, hoping she would be forgiven.

Seeing Laura made Lottie feel hesitant, mostly due to the ordeal just an hour ago, and with a small voice, she began to speak.

“I-It’s okay, and I’m sorry for earlier. I-I wasn’t trying to mess with you. I was dazed, and I thought my name was called.” Lottie responded with an apology, her expression being sincere, mixed with anxiety.

What followed was brief silence as Lottie waited for a response.

Was it going to be negative or positive? To Lottie’s surprise, Laura smiled, shaking her head as she gently began to reassure Lottie that all was well.

“You’re forgiven, Lottie. It’s important to learn forgiveness, no matter how small or big something is. It’s what the bible teaches us, and besides, I didn’t think you did anything wrong.” Laura responded in a kind voice as she looked up at the taller girl.

Now, Lottie didn’t believe or rather wasn’t interested in religion; however, just hearing someone speaking kindly to her made her smile, as if a spark of color had just entered her rather dull world, as she described it.

“T-Thank you. I’m glad we were able to clear that misunderstanding. I didn’t want you to think I was some mean girl or something because I’m rich or whatever.” Lottie responded with a small smile as a small part of her hoped that Laura wasn’t thinking that; however, she expected the usual.

But to Lottie’s surprise, Laura shook her head in denial as she spoke once more.

“I don’t think you’re mean. I mean, we shouldn’t judge someone without knowing them, and from what I gather..” Laura responded to Lottie in a warm voice as she walked closer to Lottie, her hands behind her back as she did so.

“You seem to be pretty wonderful, Lottie. Do you have any friends?” Laura continued to speak to Lottie as she also asked her about her friendship.

Those words caught Lottie off guard as she stared down at Laura, a small part of her thinking she was messing around; however, she saw that Laura was sincere.

“N-Not really. I-I talk to people, but it doesn't go any deeper than small talk, why?” Lottie responded with a hint of hope in her voice, a small part of her yearning for friendship.

“Well, I was asking and hoping that you’ll be my friend? I would love to get to know you more.” Laura responded with a smile, hoping her offer would be accepted.

This moment made Lottie’s eyes widen as she took time to process the question, feeling a slew of emotions such as surprise and shock, and eventually, she responded.

“Yes. I-I would like to be friends with you, Laura.” Lottie responded with a glimmer of hope as she found herself touching Laura’s hands, prompting her to quickly swipe away.

Laura chuckled at this as she smiled warmly.

“It’s okay, and I’m glad we can become friends. I have a spare table we can sit at, let’s eat there, Lottie.” Laura spoke to Lottie, still smiling at Lottie as she reached her hand out.

Lottie smiled back, accepting her hand as both girls exited the bathroom and made their way to the cafeteria.

Unknown to them, a girl was watching them, and she noticed Lottie and her tall frame.

The girl was short, had curly hair, and wore glasses; her name was Misty Quigley.

“She’s perfect. The team will definitely need someone like her.” Misty spoke gleefully to herself, letting out a smirk.

Lottie’s childhood was hard; she transferred schools many times due to her parents, mostly her father, wanting her to go to prestigious schools; however, Lottie was lucky to go to a normal high school and potentially make friends, just as she always desired.

This interaction would open the doors for new possibilities for Lottie.

(Do You Like Soccer?)

 *September 5th, 1995*

*Wiskayok, New Jersey*

During Lunch time, Misty skipped along the hallway, humming a tune as she quickly made her way outside the doors.

“She’ll be perfect for the team. Her tall frame could serve as an advantage.” Misty thought to herself with a smirk as she continued to skip across the quad.

During this, she could hear small whispers and giggles coming from a group of girls, and it was clear they were talking badly about Misty.

Despite this, Misty ignored this, looking back at the boy’s locker room as she made her way across the locker room to reach a door.

The door belonged to Coach Martinez, who was set to be the head coach of the Yellowjackets team. Misty stared at the door before knocking, waiting for an answer as she stood by the door.

There was silence as Misty continued to wait for an answer, and this silence continued for a few seconds until there was an answer.

“Come in..” Coach Martinez responded from the other side in a stern voice.

Misty opened the door and entered the office, taking a good look at it. Coach Martinez’s office was neither small nor big, but still decently organized.

There were photos and sports equipment set up neatly, and at the front stood his deck with the American and New Jersey flags standing at each side.

“Miss Quigley, what brings you here today? If it’s not important, then don’t bother wasting my time.” Coach Martinez greeted Misty while he looked up at her, watching her as she made her way to the seat.

There was another moment of silence before Misty began to speak.

“Coach, I know someone who can do great for the team. Someone who can help this team once Soccer Season starts.” Misty spoke to Coach Martinez in an upbeat voice, her expression filled with excitement as she waited for a response.

Hearing this made Coach Martinez suspicious as he raised an eyebrow before speaking, his tone still stern.

“I know someone, as in your friend, or I know someone as in you stalking them? Miss Quigley, I know..” Coach Martinez responded in a stern voice; however, he was cut off by Misty, who quickly spoke in defense of herself.

“I wasn’t stalking her. I saw her, that’s all. Her name is Charlotte Matthews, I believe. I think she’ll be great. She’s tall, and she looks like she can be a great defense player for the team.” Misty spoke defensively to Coach Martinez as she stared directly at him, waiting for a response.

Coach Martinez sighed at those words before finally speaking up.

“Who was she with? A girl like her must be with a few friends at the least.” Coach Martinez responded, his voice still being authoritative despite Misty’s defensive words.

Misty’s expression perked up as she began to tell the coach who Lottie was with.

“Well, she was with a blonde-haired girl, I didn’t get a good look at her, but that’s all I know who she was with, but the main point is that Charlotte would be great for your team.” Misty responded, her tone returning to her usual quirky tone.

The description of a blonde girl quickly made Coach Martinez’s expression more stern as he began to speak.

“No. If she’s hanging out with that Natalie girl, then she can’t join the team. I can’t have someone like her sully the reputation of my team. Natalie is a bad influence on her and everyone.” Coach Martinez responded in a stern voice.

Those words quickly made Misty shake her head, her tone growing more defensive as she stood up.

“Natalie is not a bad influence, coach. For your information, I’ve been on a group project with you, and she’s quite helpful if you get to know her. Our conversation is done.” Misty responded to Coach Martinez defensively before turning around to walk out of the office, ending their conversation.

The sound of the door closing could be heard while Coach Martinez sighed to himself, shaking his head before resuming his paperwork.

*Lunch table*

At the lunch table, Lottie and Laura sat at the tables, eating their lunch while Laura began to ask her new friend questions.

“You don’t really have any friends, Charlotte?” Laura asked Lottie in a kind voice as she stared at her new friend, waiting for an answer.

Lottie quickly nodded in confirmation before speaking once more.

“Yes, m-my parents constantly made me switch schools. I never had the chance to form any connections.” Lottie responded in a calm voice while she picked over her food before taking a bite from it.

Laura listened intently, nodding understandably before speaking, her expression and tone being sincere.

“Well, you don’t have to worry about that anymore. I’m your friend now. Also, can I call you Lottie?” Laura responded with a smile as the question made Lottie look up at her.

“Lottie? Sure. I honestly prefer it. It sounds more to my taste than Charlotte.” Lottie responded with a small smile as she looked at her new friend.

Those words made Laura nod enthusiastically as she began to speak.

“Then, Lottie, it is!” Laura responded enthusiastically to Lottie. Lottie stared at Laura before smiling at her, feeling more comfortable but still nervous.

“Thank you for wanting to be my friend. Most people don’t approach me because they think I’m too good for them, or that they want to use me for money. So I appreciate you for genuinely wanting to be my friend.” Lottie thanked Laura with a smile on her face.

Laura smiled at those words as she began to speak.

“Of course, the door is always open if you ever need anything, Lottie.” Laura responded in a welcoming voice that made Lottie feel welcome.

And so the girls continued eating their lunch together, smiling and getting to know each other more as Lottie found herself enjoying her time with Laura.

The bell rang, indicating it was time for their next class as Laura packed up her things.

“I had a great time with you. It was fun getting to know you, and what’s your next class? We can walk to class if we share the same one.” Laura asked Lottie kindly, getting up from the lunch table as she did so.

Lottie got up as well, packing her things as she began to respond to the question.

“I have Biology with Mr Scott. He’s our substitute teacher for the rest of the semester since our last teacher quit because she won the lottery, crazy right?” Lottie responded with a chuckle, finding the event to be amusing, while Laura laughed at this.

“He’s quite nice. I believe he’s the assistant coach to Coach Martinez, so I hope you have fun.” Laura responded kindly as she wrapped her bag around her shoulder, ready to depart for her next class.

Laura turned around to walk away before looking back at Lottie, giving her a smile.

“I’ll be seeing you, bestie. Have a wonderful afternoon.” Laura spoke to Lottie for the final time, waving at her as she began to walk to her next class, humming a song.

Lottie saw Laura walking, and she smiled warmly before picking up her bag to walk to her next class.

“She’s so nice. It sucks I share one class with her..” Lottie thought to herself as she began walking to her biology class.

*Room 23*

Lottie arrived at her class, breathing in the cool air that surrounded the classroom.

Her substitute teacher, Ben Scott, leaned back on his desk, waiting for his students as he turned around to see Lottie.

“Good Afternoon, Charlotte. I did some seating arranging, so you’ll have to sit next to Misty Quigley for the time being.” Ben greeted Lottie as he pointed over at Misty’s desk with his pen.

Lottie nodded as she looked at the desk to see Misty waving enthusiastically at her with a huge smile on her face as she patted the desk next to her, signaling Lottie to sit down.

Lottie turned around to face Ben before advising him to do one simple request.

“Oh, call me Lottie. I think I’ll stick to that name, Mr Scott.” Lottie advised Ben with a small smile on her face before making her way to sit down next to Misty.

Once Lottie sat down, she could hear a few whispers from the other kids, and she knew damn well they were talking about Misty in a bad way.

Lottie knew Misty had a bad reputation for being the so-called weird kid, and to her guilt, she even brought the rumors.

“Hey! Hey!” Misty called out to Lottie in an upbeat voice, gently tapping Lottie’s desk in hopes of gaining her attention.

This snapped Lottie out of her stupor as she looked down at Misty, seeing the huge grin on her face and also smelling her fragrance, which was sweet, too sweet.

“Do you like soccer, Lottie?” Misty asked Lottie in a cheerful voice, waiting for an answer.

What will Lottie respond with?!

Chapter 3: The Equipment Girl

Summary:

Lottie meets Misty whom introduces her to the soccer team that is planned for the school

Chapter Text

(The Equipment Girl)

*September 5th, 1995*

*Wiskayok, New Jersey*

Lottie stared at the enthusiastic look on Misty’s face after hearing her question.

There was a hint of curiosity in Lottie’s expression as she began to respond.

“I do. I used to play soccer when I was a kid, but it wasn’t anything too serious, why?” Lottie responded to Misty as she continued to stare at her enthusiastic face.

Misty cheerfully clapped her hands together, letting out a smirk as she did so.

“Perfect! I want you to join the Yellowjackets soccer team. Tryouts are today, so don’t be late, okay? I’m Misty Quigley, by the way. I’m going to be the equipment manager for the team, so if you need anything, such as advice, special equipment, or anything, then let me know.” Misty introduced herself to Lottie in a cheerful voice as she continued to talk.

Misty continued to talk to Lottie as the words that came out of her mouth were like a flowing river, all while Lottie continued to listen, observing her enthusiastic nature.

“Gosh, she talks a lot, but I guess it can’t be helped. Misty never had a genuine friend.” Lottie thought to herself as she stared down at the talkative Misty.

Once Misty was done talking, she looked up at Lottie, waiting for a response as she smiled.

“So? What do you think? Ready to join try-outs? It’s right after school! I can even walk you there to sign up and all that jazz.” Misty asked Lottie as she gauged her expression, hoping she would say yes.

Lottie looked down at Misty as she thought about the question:

Should she join or decline? Lottie thought heavily on the answer as she began to think about what she had just heard, and perhaps asked Laura to join.

“Joining a soccer team sounds nice. It’s better than being alone for most of the day when I get home. B-But what if they don’t like me? What if they think I’m joining because I’m some diva who wants to steal the thunder?” Lottie thought to herself, anxious as she continued to think about her answer.

Those thoughts continued to persist in Lottie's mind as she felt anxious about what they would think of her; however, she remembered Laura and how accepting she was.

And at that moment, something in Lottie made her speak, her tone becoming confident.

“Yes. I want to join the team, Misty. Sign-ups are after school, right? If so, please show me the way.” Lottie responded eagerly, despite her soft-spoken voice, as she awaited Misty's response.

Lottie’s agreement to join made Misty squeal excitedly as she grabbed Lottie’s hands, making her blush slightly at that moment.

“Perfect! Meet me by the gym after school. We’ll discuss everything from that point. I can’t wait to see you on the field! I can imagine you right now!” Misty responded in a dreamy voice as she imagined Lottie on the field, playing soccer.

Those words caught the attention of two girls, who were eavesdropping on the conversation; their names were Vanessa and Taissa; however, most people call them Van and Tai.

“Be careful, there. Once Misty gets attached to someone then there’s no way of getting rid of her. She’ll follow you to the ends of the Earth.” Tai advised Lottie in a teasing voice while Van snickered as she nodded in agreement with her friend.

“Tai is right, Misty will latch on to you like glue and she’ll never get off your ass, so try to be careful, girl.” Van chimed in on the conversation in support of her friend, resting her chin on her hand while she looked at Lottie.

Lottie stared back at the pair before turning around to see Misty, who glared at them before turning back to face the front.

“I’m sure she’s not that bad. Also, what’s your name? I’m Lottie Matthews.” Lottie introduced herself to Tai, reaching her hand out for a handshake as she hoped it would be accepted.

Tai smiled confidently as she shook Lottie’s hand, preparing to introduce herself as well.

“Whatever you say, but I’m Taissa Turner; however, just call me Tai. I hope we can become great friends or at least great classmates.” Tai introduced herself back to Lottie, shaking her hand firmly, and before looking over at Van.

“And this is Van Palmer, my best friend. I hope you and she also become good friends or at least good classmates.” Tai spoke once more while looking over at Van, who began to introduce herself as well.

Van looked over at Lottie, holding up a peace sign as she introduced herself to Lottie.

“Nice to meet you, Lottie. I’m Van.” Van introduced herself to Lottie in an upbeat voice.

Lottie smiled and nodded at both greetings, feeling more at home, which was something she had never felt for most of her life due to her parents barely being around.

“It’s great meeting you both, and I wish for the same as well, Tai and Van.” Lottie responded with a smile before turning back around to face the board while Van and Tai followed suit.

Almost immediately after, the bell rang, indicating it was time for class, as the last few students quickly entered the class.

Once the last students sat down, Ben Scott grabbed his clipboard and began taking attendance.

“Alright, if your name is called, just say you’re here.” Ben spoke to the class while he looked down at his clipboard.

Lottie listened to the sea of names being called, tapping her desk in boredom until she heard Misty’s name being called.

“Misty Quigley.” Ben called out before looking up to confirm if she was here.

Instantly, Misty stood up, which startled Lottie as the girl enthusiastically began to respond.

“Present, Mr Scott!” Misty responded as she smiled at Ben brightly before sitting back down.

This caused some students to snicker, including Tai and Van, as one of them began to speak to each other.

“I forgot Misty is totally obsessed with Mr Scott. She’s so fucking weird.” Van whispered to Tai with a smirk while Tai chuckled back, smiling in agreement.

“Yeah, tell me about it. I don’t know why Lottie would entertain someone like her..” Tai whispered back while quickly looking over at the pair.

Meanwhile, Ben would raise his hands to silence the class before speaking once more.

And so the rest of the day went normally until it was time for sign-ups.

*3:21pm*

Lottie exited her last class, making her way through the school grounds until reaching the exit gates.

There stood a long black limousine that stood out from the normal cars that were parked at the front, and a single man stood in front.

The driver was a tall man in his seventies, and he waited for Lottie, but this time, there were other plans.

“Good Afternoon, Miss Matthews. Your parents won’t be here for the rest of the evening, so I’ll pick you up.” The driver spoke to Lottie in a frail yet kind voice as he gently opened the door for her.

Lottie shook her head before explaining the soccer situation to him.

“Tell my parents I’ll be trying out for soccer today, but I’ll phone you when I’m done, okay?” Lottie responded with a smile before walking back to the school gates.

The butler saw Lottie walking back to the school grounds before shutting the door and making his way to the front door of the car, preparing to drive away.

 *School Grounds*

Back at the school grounds, Lottie walked across the quad, making her way across the grounds until she saw Misty, who was waving at her enthusiastically, her smile bright.

“Lottie! You made it! I’ll walk you over to Coach Martinez’s office. Let's go.” Misty cheerfully spoke to Lottie before motioning her hand for her to follow her.

Lottie nodded before following Misty to their destination, and she thought about Laura, her new friend.

“I hope Laura is interested in soccer and that she joins the team. I don’t want to be the odd one out..” Lottie thought to herself as she continued walking alongside Misty.

Lottie and Misty entered the boys’ locker room, walking across the lockers until finally approaching the door that led to Coach Martinez’s office.

“We made it. Let’s hope the coach can accept you..” Misty spoke to Lottie in a rather ominous voice, which Lottie found unnecessary.

‘Gee, didn’t have to make me more anxious..” Lottie thought to herself in slight annoyance, preparing herself for the conversation.

Misty opened the door to the office, entering it as she looked over to see Laura talking to the coach, which annoyed her greatly.

During this, Lottie hesitantly entered the office, nervously caressing her hands as she looked up, and once she did that, her expression changed into one of relief and surprise.

“L-Laura?!” Lottie uttered a surprised tone of voice while Laura was also surprised to see her new friend.

Laura smiled and waved at Lottie, her friendly demeanor calming her anxious mood as Lottie waved back.

“Lottie, are you joining the soccer team as well?! I-I’m also joining and I was thinking of you..” Laura asked Lottie in a surprised yet eager voice as she waited for an answer.

At that moment, Lottie felt Laura’s hands gently touching hers as she stared into her kind eyes, feeling warmth behind them.

Lottie’s life was always lonely and filled with isolation; nobody wanted to be her friend; however, everything would change with one simple answer.

“Yes!” Lottie responds joyfully, smiling warmly at Laura.

And thus their friendship officially blooms!

Chapter 4: Team Hunting

Chapter Text

(Team Hunting)

 *September 5th, 1995*

*Wiskayok, New Jersey*

Lottie, Laura, and Misty sat in Coach Martinez’s office, watching him look at the paperwork for the upcoming soccer team, his expression focused.

Each girl had a different position when sitting, Laura’s was attentive and focused, her hands on the desk.

Misty was also attentive; however, she didn’t place her hands on the desk but sat up straight.

Finally, Lottie’s was normal, her hands placed on her knees as she waited for whatever Coach Martinez had to say.

“I know try-outs are today, but I’ll have to cancel due to a personal matter that I’m dealing with; however, I have a task for you three young ladies, think you three can handle it?” Coach Martinez asked the three girls in a professional voice as he quickly straightened his posture.

The three girls looked at each other for a moment before turning around to face him once more.

“A task? May I ask what it could be, Coach? I’m certain we could be up for the task, depending on what it is.” Laura asked Coach Martinez curiously while Lottie thought about the possible task.

“I wonder what he wants us to do. Can’t be anything too major, right?” Lottie thought to herself as she continued to wait for a response.

Coach Martinez formed a number four with his fingers, making the trio more curious as he began to speak.

“The team needs four more members, and since we’re short on time, I want you three to seek out the remaining members, and if you do,

I’ll talk to your teachers and have them give you extra credit. How does that sound?” Coach Martinez requested the girls.

The three girls sat silently for a few moments before Laura spoke up, agreeing to help find the remaining four members.

“Yes, we would love to help. When are the four members expecting? We could get them by Friday if possible.” Laura responded, agreeing to help with the team searching.

As for Lottie, she didn’t know anyone who could be interested in soccer, let alone know anyone at the school, but she still agreed to help.

“I’ll help too. I don’t know anyone in particular, but I can help Laura and Misty find four people for the team.” Lottie spoke to the coach as well, her posture straightening to show interest in helping.

Finally, Misty quickly spoke up, her expression hopeful and excited.

“Natalie. She’ll be perfect. You gotta allow her to play on the team, and if you don’t, I’ll quit being the equipment manager, and trust me, you don’t want that.” Misty spoke to Coach Martinez excitedly; however, there was a clear warning in her threat.

Misty leaned over, her expression turning more serious despite her smirk as she continued to speak.

“I’m also an expert in the medical field, so if anyone gets hurt, then there won’t be anybody to save them since I’m not here, so it’s best to consider my offer, and that makes one less person.” Misty warned Coach Martinez with a smirk on her face, hoping he would consider her offer.

Both Lottie and Laura listened to Misty’s threat as they were surprised to see someone standing up to Coach Martinez.

Lottie wondered why Misty wanted Natalie to join the team so badly.

Could she be good at soccer, or perhaps she wanted Natalie to join the good crowd?

Of course, she always heard the talk on how much of a troublemaker she is, and she grew more curious to see what was up with her.

“I-I think Misty is right. Having her join the team could give her something productive to do. I mean, I don’t judge her for the choices she makes, but I know this means a lot to Misty, so please consider her words.” Lottie spoke in defense of Misty’s claim and Natalie, hoping that the coach would listen.

On the other hand, Laura smiled at what she heard before chiming in on the conversation.

“They’re right, Coach. Also, God teaches us to love thy neighbor, so it’s important for us as well to bring Natalie into a safe haven, free from the sins of drug use, smoking, and other acts.” Laura chimed in on the conversation in an uplifting voice, hoping that Coach Martinez would listen.

Misty rolled her eyes at Laura’s usual religious speeches, deeming them annoying and self-righteous as she looked over to see Lottie looking at Laura.

Misty noticed Lottie wasn’t annoyed or intrigued at Lottie’s words, but had an expression that she didn’t mind Laura’s speech, at least that’s what she thought.

Meanwhile, Coach Martinez sighed, his expression being reluctant as he began to speak, his expression being stern yet concerned.

“That girl is no good; however, I’ll allow her to join the team, that is, if you can convince her to not bring her nonsense to the field. I want my girls to be respectful and show good sportsmanship, not waste their lives.” Coach Martinez responded, reluctantly agreeing to having Natalie on the team.

All three girls smiled at the news, Misty squealing excitedly as they were finally able to convince Coach Martinez to allow Natalie to join the team.

“Thank you so much, we won’t fail you, Coach. We’ll find the remaining members for the team.” Laura thanked Coach Martinez, shaking his head honorably.

Feeling excited, Misty clapped her hands together cheerfully as she began to speak.

“Alright, let’s go! We need to find Natalie and the remaining three members!” Misty commanded Lottie and Laura in a cheerful voice as she got up from the chair.

This prompted Lottie and Laura to get up from the chairs, following Misty as the girls exited the rooms, leaving the coach alone.

 *School Grounds*

The three girls walked across the quad, seeing some of the teenagers hanging out, some smoking weed in the corner, which annoyed Laura.

“Alright, I guess find Natalie first, if she’s even here, but she’s probably already hanging out with her friends in unfamiliar areas..” Laura suggested to the pair before looking at Lottie and Misty to gauge their interest.

Once she did that, she turned her attention to Lottie, asking for her input on the situation.

“Lottie, do you have anyone we could potentially recruit for the team? It could be a classmate, shoot me some names.” Laura asked Lottie for assistance, hoping she would jot some names for the soccer team.

Lottie thought for a moment, not being too familiar with her classmates, until two people came to her mind, Van and Tai.

“Perhaps we could see if Van and Tai could join, and they’re my classmates, so if they’re still here, then we could see if they want to join.” Lottie suggested it to Laura, hoping she’ll take her suggestion into consideration.

This idea made Laura smile as she nodded in support of her friend’s idea.

“That would be great. We should ask them if they haven’t joined. I also talk to Van from time to time, so asking her shouldn’t be an issue, but let’s start searching just in case.” Laura responded with a smile while Lottie was pleased to hear her idea taken into consideration.

Lottie, Laura, and Misty began walking the school grounds in search of Van and Tai while also hoping to find Natalie.

During the walk, Lottie thought about Natalie and what kind of person she was.

Lottie thought about the small times she caught glimpses of Natalie from time to time, such as when she was late to class.

“I hope Natalie joins.” Lottie thought to herself as she looked over at Misty, who was talking Laura’s ear off.

Before long, Lottie spoke to Laura once more, feeling curious about the team members.

“Laura, who’s already on the team? I..um..I’m curious to see who’ll be on our roster.” Lottie asked Laura as she waited for an answer.

Hearing this, Laura and Misty stopped in their tracks as Laura turned around, smiling at Lottie.

That warm smile made Lottie feel more comfortable around her as she gently rubbed her arm.

“Good question, I was chatting with the coach and he told me that we have Shauna, Jackie, Robin, Britt, Akilah, Allie, Gen, Melissa, Rachel, and Kristen.” Laura answered, using her fingers to count the team members while Lottie nodded understandably.

“I see, so we need one more, assuming Van Tai and Natalie join, right?” Lottie spoke once more to Laura while she nodded.

“You’re right, but in that scenario, who would be our next member?” Laura responded to Lottie, feeling the same way.

Suddenly, footsteps could be heard running; it was a girl with black hair.

The girl was running as if she were in a rush to be somewhere.

“Coming through!” The girl cried out in warning as she got closer to the trio, who were in her way.

Unfortunately, the girl tripped and fell, causing her to fall down on the floor as school supplies scattered on the ground.

Immediately, Laura rushed to her aid, her expression filled with worry.

“Are you okay?! You can’t run like that. It’s dangerous.” Laura spoke to the girl in a concerned voice, helping her get up.

Lottie saw this and knelt down, helping her gather her school supplies, all while Misty watched.

It wasn’t long before Misty recognized the girl after taking a good look at her.

The girl slowly rose up, rubbing her head as she began to speak, not noticing Misty.

“Thanks, you should have seen the way I fucking ran across those hallways. My asshole teacher kept us in, isn’t that crazy or what..” The girl spoke to Laura in a relieved tone of voice as she began to introduce herself.

“You can call me Mari. Mari Ibarra.” Mari introduced herself with a confident smile before looking over to see Misty.

At that moment, Mari’s face instantly grew shocked, and the reason would fall into their favor.

“Oh fuck. I missed soccer sign-ups, didn’t I?” Mari uttered in a disappointed voice.

Meanwhile, Misty’s expression perked up excitedly as she balled up her fists in victory.

“Our next member!” Misty thought to herself cheerfully.

Team hunting continues in the next chapter!

(Team Hunting Part 2)

*September 5th, 1995*

*Wiskayok, New Jersey*

*4:34pm*

The girls sat on the benches, discussing the soccer team as Mari was disappointed to hear that the coach had to leave early for a personal matter.

“Damn, I guess I have to wait til tomorrow, right? That fucking sucks.” Mari spoke to the three girls in an annoyed voice while Laura nodded in confirmation.

“We’ll put your name on the list and give it to Coach Martinez first thing in the morning, but it’s great to meet you, Mari. I hope this team treats you well, and remember that God is always watching over you.” Laura reassured Mari in a warm voice while Mari gave her a confused look.

Mari scratched her head at Laura’s words, mostly bringing up God as she eventually spoke up.

“Thanks, and I guess, but I should get going. My mother is waiting for me, and I don’t want to worry her.” Mari responded to Laura as she got up from the bench, looking over at Lottie as she smiled at her.

Mari looked at Lottie before waving at her and speaking to her.

“It’s nice to meet you, Lottie. I hope we can become good friends in the future.” Mari spoke to Lottie in a welcoming voice as she grabbed her bag so she could leave.

However, right before Mari departed from the scene, she turned around to face the trio as she waved them goodbye.

“It was great meeting you three, let’s all try our best tomorrow when practice starts.” Mari spoke to the trio for the final time before finally departing from the scene, her long black hair flowing as she walked.

Once Mari left, Laura took out her small notepad, writing down Mari’s name to keep track of who was joining the team before she closed it.

“Okay, next we need to talk to Van and Tai. I usually see them at the library after school, so I could head there.” Laura spoke to Lottie and Misty.

Both Lottie and Misty nodded understandably as they got up from the benches, ready to find Van and Tai.

“Mari seems cool and nice. I hope we can become friends.” Lottie spoke softly while Misty quickly began to speak up, a smirk on her face.

“Well, she did spread rumors about this girl about Becky, so she does have some fight in her, but she totally deserved it. She always bullies for no reason.” Misty chimed in on the conversation as she chuckled, much to Laura’s dismay.

This, in fact, caused Laura to speak up regarding Mari spreading rumors about Becky, and mostly to never stoop to their level.

“Well, we shouldn’t stoop to their level, Misty. It’s always important to forgive your enemies. It’s what..” Laura attempted to speak to Misty; however, she was cut off by her.

Misty looked at Laura before speaking once more, her tone being annoyed.

“Well, some people don’t deserve forgiveness.” Misty responded in an annoyed voice before grabbing her bag to leave the benches, leaving Lottie and Laure alone.

Of course, Laura knew Misty was indeed correct in this argument; however, she always kept a strong faith in her beliefs, even if some people found it odd.

Laura sighed, shaking her head before looking up at Lottie, who was watching everything.

“Don’t worry about Misty. She’ll come back around. It’s that we seem to disagree on the matter of forgiveness, but let’s not allow that to bother us, ok? Let’s find Van and Tai.” Laura spoke to Lottie in a reassuring voice as she smiled at her.

Lottie nodded in agreement as she picked up her bag, walking alongside Laura to find Van and Tai so they could ask them to join their team.

Both girls began walking towards the library as Laura looked at her friend, preparing to ask her a question.

“Lottie, have you been to church before?” Laura asked Lottie in a kind voice as she waited for a response from her friend.

The question made Lottie think for a moment as she tried to remember the days or even weeks that she and her family attended a church service.

Unfortunately, Lottie wasn’t able to recall a moment when she ever went to church; however, it wasn't a big deal for her.

“I’ve never been to church before, but perhaps when I was a kid, but I’m not sure, Laura, a-and some of the people can be rather judgmental, so I tend to not go to church,” Lottie responded as she looked at her friend, hoping she wouldn't judge her for this personal choice.

Luckily, Laura only gave Lottie a reassuring look, a look that wasn’t judgmental, which brought relief to Lottie’s eyes.

“It’s all good. I understand going to church isn’t for everyone, and I’m still on that path to understanding that; however, please know that my church doors are always open for you, Lottie. No matter what, everyone is welcome, even you.” Laura reassured Lottie in a welcoming voice as she smiled brightly.

Those words and Laura’s smile brought a sense of warmth to Lottie, something she had never felt when talking to someone.

It was when Lottie knew that Laura was the first person in her life to offer her a place where she could feel welcomed.

“Thank you. I-I’m not a church person, but I’ll keep that in mind, and it’s also great hearing those words, I appreciate it.” Lottie thanked Laura with a smile.

Both girls continued to smile until Laura clapped her hands together, feeling even more motivated to find Van and Tai.

“Come on, let’s find Van and Tai, we got a soccer team to form, bestie!” Laura cheerfully spoke to Lottie as she gently grabbed her hand, making Lottie blush as she smiled.

“Of course!” Lottie responded cheerfully, feeling motivated as well.

Both girls eventually arrived at the library, making their way through the area before finding Van and Tai studying together.

*Library*

Van and Tai looked up to see Lottie and Laura together, sparking interest in their eyes as Van began to speak up.

“Oh shit, it’s you guys, come have a seat.” Van whispered as she gently pointed at the two available chairs in front of her and Tai.

Both Laura and Lottie smiled at them before making their way to sit in the chairs that were at their table.

“Good Afternoon, Van and Tai. It’s great seeing you two. We came here to see if you and Tai wanted to join the soccer team. We got someone named Mari joining already, so we need both of you and one last person, and we’re set.” Laura greeted the pair with a smile as she waited for an answer.

The mention of that name sparked Tai’s attention as she began to speak up with a smile on her face.

“Mari Ibarra? I know her, she’s mad cool, a good friend of mine too. And Van was also considered joining since Mari planned on joining, but since she’s joining, it seems right that we join as well.” Tai spoke to Laura in a confident voice while Van nodded in agreement.

Laura and Lottie were pleased to hear those words as they began to speak up, happy to recruit more members.

“That’s wonderful. I’ll let the coach know about this in the morning, and let’s all become a wonderful team, ok?” Laura responded to Van and Tai cheerfully as she took out her notepad, writing down their names to keep track of them.

During this, Tai looked over at Lottie as she began to speak to her, wanting to know her more.

“Lottie, right? What do you like to do for fun? I would love to know more about you, girl, so spill the deets.” Tai asked Lottie in a welcoming voice, her eyes focused on Lottie as she waited for a response.

Lottie thought about the question for a few moments, brainstorming the things she liked to do or at least would like to do, before finally deciding on what to say.

Once Lottie decided what to say, she sat up straight, her expression confident as she began to speak.

“I like dining at the Chinese spot at the mall. I also like writing, drawing, and watching movies. I'm not much of a movie person, but I still find interest in them.” Lottie responded confidently as both Van and Tai quickly became interested in her.

Van was the first one to speak up, clearly showing interest in becoming friends with Lottie.

“Radical. I’m a huge moviegoer as well, so I can show you all the latest and good movies, so don’t be afraid to ask, Lottie.” Van responded while Tai nodded in agreement.

“She’s right, my girl Tai is the movie guru. Also, let’s be friends, Lottie. Since we’re all gonna be teammates, we might as well become friends.” Tai offered Lottie in a welcoming voice as she reached her hand out for a handshake, waiting for Lottie to accept.

Lottie slowly reached her hand out, accepting Tai’s handshake as both girls smiled.

“Thank you, let’s hope for the best, Tai, and you too, Van.” Lottie thanked Tai while also speaking to Van as Laura watched the interaction with a smile on her face.

Eventually, it was time for everyone to head home as the four girls said their goodbyes to each other.

The four girls stood outside the school, ready to head home as they said their farewells.

“It was great meeting you, Lottie. I'll see you tomorrow at try-outs. I hope to see you there.” Van spoke to Lottie as she and Tai waved goodbye to their new friend.

Lottie waved back as she responded, slowly feeling at home.

“Same here, I’ll see you both tomorrow as well!” Lottie responded while waving goodbye as she saw Van walking home alone, while Tai got in her mother’s car.

Once the car drove off and Van was far away from the school, Lottie and Laura were alone.

“Thank you for today. I appreciate it. Meeting new people and trying new things isn’t something I always do, but I’m grateful for those things happening.” Lottie thanked Laura with a smile as she saw her friend smiling back.

Laura felt gratitude at Lottie’s words as she shook her head.

“You don’t have to thank me. You deserve to have a good group of friends, Lottie. I hope that those friendships you have formed today last a lifetime. Laura responded with a smile, making Lottie smile back.

Eventually, a black limousine arrived at the front of the school, which caught Lottie’s attention.

“That's my ride. It was great meeting you today, Laura. I'll see you tomorrow.” Lottie spoke to Laura for the final time as she waved her goodbye.

Laura waved goodbye with a smile as she saw Lottie entering the limousine, closing the door behind her as the limo drove away.

The limo drove off as Lottie stared at the window, watching everything go past her as she sat in silence, not saying a word.

*9:35pm*

Hours later, Lottie sat alone in the dining area of her mansion, looking at the empty chairs as she grabbed the medicine bottle that was next to her, taking it as she drank it down with some water.

Once she was done taking her medicine.

Lottie sat alone, eating her dinner in complete silence and loneliness.

Chapter 6: Natalie Scatorccio

Chapter Text

(Natalie Scatoriccio)

*Author’s Note: The start of the chapter is taken from the pilot episode but once Natalie, Kevyn and Rich start running, everything is back to normal*

*September 6th, 1995*

*Wiskayok, New Jersey*

*3:34pm*

It was the afternoon as three teenagers were drinking at the corner of the liquor store, their names were Natalie, Rich, and Kevyn.

Natalie finished taking a sip of liquor from the bag, her expression being slightly disgusted due to the taste.

“What is that?” Natalie asked her two friends as she handed the bottle to Kevyn.

Kevyn chuckled, taking the bottle from her as he began to speak to Rich, who was also his friend.

“And here I thought jocks were supposed to be able to party.” Kevyn spoke to Rich, seeing his snicker as he began to drink from the bottle.

Once Kevyn started drinking, he could hear Natalie’s cough as he eventually found the liquor to be disgusting, making him wince.

“Oh, Jesus. Dude, this is terrible.” Kevyn spoke in disgust while he handed Natalie the bottle back to her.

During this, Rich began to speak to his friends, his expression being teasing.

“Okay, you know what. You can both go suck a dick.” Rich teased the pair playfully while Natalie snickered at the comment.

Of course, Kevyn teased back as he looked at him with a smirk.

“And just maybe we will.” Kevyn teased back while Natalie continued to snicker at the teasing.

Suddenly, a pager began to beep, quickly alerting Rich as he checked his waist; it was his cousin.

“Oh, shit. It’s my cousin.” Rich alerted his friends in an excited voice as he looked back at Natalie and Kevyn.

Hearing this made Natalie’s expression perk with anticipation as she began to speak to him.

“Did he get us the stuff?” Natalie asked Rich eagerly with a smile, while Rich quickly answered back.

“Yeah, tonight.” Rich responded with a gleeful smile, which pleased Natalie.

Suddenly, a blue car with two men arrived, techno music blaring from inside, as this caught the trio’s attention.

Natalie, Kevyn, and Rich all stared at the vehicle, their expressions quickly becoming serious as one of them began to speak to Natalie.

“Hey! Burnout! Show us your tits!” The man from the passenger seat commanded Natalie as he and his buddy, driving the car, began to laugh obnoxiously.

The two men laughed while Rich and Kevyn remained silent, their faces being annoyed, while the same passenger continued to sexually harass Natalie.

“Oh, come on! Don’t be shy!” The man from the passenger seat begged, hoping Natalie would cave in.

At that moment, Natalie felt disgust as she turned around to face the ongoing traffic.

“Fucking pricks.” Natalie thought to herself as she slowly felt her blood growing hot.

Sensing the change in his friend’s mood, Rich quickly spoke up, mocking them as he came up with a plan.

“I mean, shit, if you really want to see ‘em…”  Rich responded to the gross comments in a smug voice as he lifted his shirt to reveal his bare chest.

Rich wasn’t done there; he faked a moan to further chase off the guys, or at least that’s what he hoped.

Luckily, the two men groaned in annoyance before driving off; however, Natalie, still angry, wasn't done yet.

Natalie angrily took the liquor bottle and walked into the parking lot where the cleaners' store was located.

“Fucking assholes!” Natalie thought to herself, throwing the bottle at the car in anger as the glass impacted the back of the car.

The loud glass could be heard as Rich quickly became concerned about the ambitious act.

“The fuck, Natalie? He’s gonna kick our ass, not yours!” Rich spoke to Natalie in a worried tone of voice; however, this didn’t concern Natalie, and for good reason.

Natalie smiled, breathing heavily after letting out that anger as she began to speak.

“Only if they catch us!” Natalie responded with a smirk as she quickly took off, running as fast as she could.

This was followed by Kevyn and Rich quickly running with her as the blue car that was hit began to chase after them.

The trio ran across the alleyways, hopping through fences before eventually losing the car; all of them were out of breath.

“Shit, these guys would have killed us, well, me and Kevyn.” Rich uttered, catching his breath while Natalie shook her head, not feeling worried.

“At least we got away, right? Also, they’re just assholes, so they’ll all bark and no bite.” Natalie responded to Rich with a relieved smile while Kevyn uttered a curse word, catching their attention.

Kevyn looked at his watch, realizing he was late for work with his dad, which didn’t concern him, but he also didn’t want to hear his mouth.

“Shit, it seems my job is calling upon me, I’ll catch y’all tonight.” Kevyn spoke to his friends before hopping the fence to reach his destination, leaving Natalie and Rich alone.

Following this, Natalie and Rich waved Kevyn goodbye as the pair began walking from the alleyway and into the main downtown street.

“We’re going to be on cloud nine tonight. The shit my cousin is giving us will have you begging for more.” Rich spoke to Natalie while she chuckled at those words, feeling excited for tonight.

“Shit, I need a good trip. My mother has been a pain in the fucking ass lately, so I need anything to take my mind off things.” Natalie responded with her usual smile while Rich nodded in agreement.

Rich was about to say something back; however, his pager beeped, causing him to mutter a curse word as he quickly looked around before turning back to Natalie.

“I gotta go. Important matters for tonight, but I’ll catch you on the flipside, Natalie.” Rich spoke to Natalie for the final time before taking off for the day to take care of important matters.

Of course, Natalie knew the important matters were drug dealing, and that caused Rich to be expelled from Wiskayok High before attending a new high school

Once Rich was out of sight, Natalie pulled out her headphones and cassette player and proceeded to play a Nirvana song as she began walking across downtown.

The seas of faces flew past Natalie as she walked across the downtown block before seeing a bus stop, prompting her to sit down so she could wait for the bus.

Once she sat down, Natalie felt at peace, listening to Nirvana as she waited for her bus; however, this would be interrupted by a voice.

The voice belonged to Becky, the popular, rich girl who always picked fights with those she disliked.

Becky had long brown hair, brown eyes, and she dressed quite fashionably, showing off her wealth.

“Why, if it isn’t Little Miss Burnout, are you on your way to your next dick appointment?” Becky taunted Natalie as she sat next to her, taking the headphones off her ear rather forcefully.

This act caused Natalie to quickly get up, glaring at her as she spoke in a low, pissed voice.

“Don’t fucking touch me, Becky.” Natalie warned Becky as she stared directly at her, hoping she would get the message.

For a moment, Becky’s eyes widened in surprise before she continued to taunt Natalie.

“Or what, gonna hit me, burnout? I’m surprised you’re using that mouth for more than sucking dick.” Becky taunted Natalie with a smug smile on her face, waiting for Natalie’s next move.

Natalie breathed heavily, feeling the urge to punch Becky straight in the face as she balled up her fists.

However, Natalie saw the bus finally approaching and stopping at the stop, which prompted her to shake her head and grab her cassette player.

“Whatever, just leave me the fuck alone, prude little bitch.” Natalie warned Becky once more before entering the bus, not wanting to continue Becky’s game.

This annoyed Becky as she attempted to follow her; however, she felt something gooey land on her shirt, causing her to scream in disgust.

“Ew, what the fuck!! A bird fucking shitted on my outfit!! I paid 200 bucks for this outfit!!” Becky screamed in humiliation and disgust as she looked up to see Natalie giving her the finger, smirking at her.

Natalie continued to taunt Becky back as she laughed, giving her the finger as she began to speak.

“Don’t fuck with the Nat, bitch!” Natalie taunted Becky proudly as she laughed at the karma given to Becky.

Once she had her laughs, Natalie sat back down, taking a breather before kicking back and relaxing for the remainder of her bus ride.

*5:34pm*

Natalie finally arrived at her trailer park home, opening the door to reveal her mother sleeping with the TV on.

Natalie didn’t say anything but gently closed the door, not wanting to hear her mother’s words before entering her room to sit down at her bed.

“What a fucking day.” Natalie whispered to herself as she stared at the many band posters that were hung on her wall.

Natalie lay down, staring at the ceiling as she thought about tonight with Kevyn and Rich.

“Tonight’s gonna be a fucking trip. Anything to take my mind off things for a while.” Natalie whispered to herself as she turned around to fully rest.

*September 7th, 1995*

*Wiskayok High*

The next day, Natalie arrived as Natalie entered the school, walking toward her locker to gather what she needed for her first class.

“Last night was a fucking trip..” Natalie thought to herself as she remembered the insane shit she saw during her trip.

Suddenly, she heard someone calling her name, prompting her to look over. It was Misty.

“Natalie! We’ve been looking for you since yesterday! The coach wants to see you.” Misty greeted Natalie with an eager smile, staring at her as she waited for a response.

The sight of Misty made Natalie feel relieved and welcomed, which she didn’t admit, but the feelings were there.

“It’s you, Misty. What does he want? Perhaps another lecture on why I can’t join the soccer team..” Natalie responded to Misty with a hint of resentment towards Coach Martinez as she waited for an answer.

Misty shook her head before touching Natalie’s hands, smirking at her as she spoke once more.

“Nope! He wants you to join the team, courtesy of yours truly, Misty Quigley.” Misty responded with a smirk, staring at Natalie to see that her expression was surprised.

At that moment, Natalie couldn’t believe that the coach actually wanted her on the team, and she could only mutter a simple word.

“Really..” Natalie uttered in a surprised voice.

The team is finally complete!

Chapter 7: Soccer Tryouts

Chapter Text

(Soccer Tryouts)

 *September 7th, 1995*

*Wiskayok, New Jersey*

*4:24pm*

Lottie and Laura were sitting on the field, waiting for the coach to instruct the team, as they saw Natalie sitting on the field alone.

“Let’s sit with Natalie and make her feel welcomed. I bet she’s feeling nervous being in this familiar environment.” Laura advised Lottie with a smile as she and Lottie slowly got up to sit with Natalie.

The pair walked over towards Natalie, who was sitting alone, and they sat next to her, catching her attention.

During this, Lottie was the first to speak to Natalie, reaching her hand out for a handshake, hoping she would accept.

“Hello, I’m Lottie Matthews. It’s nice to meet you, Natalie. I hope we can become good friends.” Lottie greeted Natalie in a welcoming voice as she waited for a handshake.

Natalie hesitated for a moment before shaking Lottie’s hand, introducing herself as well.

“Name’s Natalie. Don’t expect me to be fucking good at this from the jump. I’m hoping to learn this sport like everyone else.” Natalie greeted Lottie with a smirk while Lottie nodded, understandably.

“No worries, we’re all in this together, but don’t expect me to save your ass.” Lottie responded playfully as the banter impressed Natalie, making her laugh.

Natalie chuckled at this, smirking at Lottie as she found her to be amusing.

“I like you already, Lottie. You know how to banter. I like it, and who’s your friend?” Natalie responded with a smirk while looking at Laura, curious to know who she was.

Laura quickly smiled at Natalie, reaching her hand out to introduce herself.

“I’m Laura Lee. It’s nice to meet you. I wish you the best of luck for this wonderful team we will create. It’s a huge responsibility, but I know we can handle it.” Laura introduced herself to her as she and Natalie shook hands.

Natalie nodded as she spoke once more, continuing to shake Laura’s hand.

“Great meeting you as well, Laura. You and Lottie are like the only two people to actually approach me. Seems like everyone else already got the memo about my reputation.” Natalie responded with a hint of snark in her voice as she looked over to see the other girls talking.

Laura shook her head before speaking to Natalie again, reassuring her.

“It’s best to ignore judgmental people. We’re all aware of what you do; however, this place is an opportunity for you to forge new bonds and friendships.” Laura responded to Natalie’s words in a warm voice while Lottie nodded in agreement.

Natalie chucked at those words, not out of disagreement but rather because she found it ironic considering she had a lecture from Coach Martinez.

“Well, the coach is on my ass, so I guess I can’t ignore those judgmental people forever, it seems, but so far, joining the team ain’t too shabby, so I can’t complain.” Natalie responded with a smirk, while Laura was pleased to hear this.

For a few moments, the girls continued to talk amongst each other until it was interrupted by the sounds of a whistle.

It was Ben Scott, who was the assistant coach to Coach Martinez, and he was taking his place for today.

“Alright, girls. Sit down together. I’ll explain everything in a moment!” Ben commanded the girls in a professional, loud voice as he motioned his hand for the teammates to sit together.

At that moment, all of the girls sat together, waiting for Coach Ben to explain everything to them, some of them whispering about why Coach Martinez was absent on the first day of tryouts.

“What’s going on, Yellowjackets? It’s great seeing so many wonderful new faces for the year!” Ben greeted the girls in an excited voice as he smiled at them.

This was followed by the girls cheering and clapping excitedly, eager to get the soccer season rolling.

“Awesome. First things first, let’s get those legs moving. I want everyone to run some laps around the track, preferably three. Let’s go,” Ben encouraged the girls as he blew the whistle for the girls to begin their warm-up routine.

Once the whistle was blown, the girls got up and began running the track, and the sounds of their footsteps were heard.

Lottie was running at a decent pace while Natalie and Laura were up front, their pacing faster than hers.

“They’re quite fast, especially Natalie.” Lottie thought to herself as she continued jogging alongside the other girls.

During the jogging, a girl named Britt quickly paced herself to jog alongside Lottie, catching her attention.

“Hey! I heard you’ve joined the team, right? The name’s Britt, nice to meet you.” Britt greeted Lottie in between breaths while she waved at Lottie politely.

Lottie continued to jog as she smiled, lifting her head to say hello back to Britt.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, and I’m Lottie Matthews, and I hope we can become good teammates and kick the other team’s asses.” Lottie responded with a smile as she continued to jog at Britt’s pace.

The last name quickly made Britt’s eyes widen as she let out a surprised gasp, making some girls turn back before focusing on their jogging.

“Waiiit?! Like THE Lottie Matthews?! The daughter of Malcolm and Emilia Matthews?! Oh shit, it’s an honor meeting you, and to have you on the team.” Britt responded in a surprised manner while Lottie shook her head.

Now, Lottie didn’t care about using her rich status to become popular or to make friends; she just wanted people to see her for herself, not some rich girl.

“That’s me, and please don’t think I’ve joined the team to flaunt my richness or whatever. I’ve mostly joined because I like soccer and I wanted to form connections.” Lottie responded, hoping that Britt wouldn’t take her words the wrong way.

Luckily, Britt shook her head, easing Lottie’s worries as she chuckled at her.

“It’s all good, Lottie. I sense that you’re a good person, so I won’t think you’re some rich prick like Becky. She’s so annoying.” Britt responded warmly, a hint of annoyance creeping once she brought up Becky.

Lottie sighed with relief as she continued jogging, almost approaching the first lap.

“Thank you, Britt. It means a lot to have people not judge me beforehand. Lottie thanked Britt with a smile while Britt smiled back.

Britt began to jog a little faster, getting ahead of Lottie as she waved goodbye.

“I’ll be finishing my lap, I’ll catch you on the flipside. It was great meeting you.” Britt spoke to Lottie for the final time before running ahead at a steady pace.

Lottie waved goodbye as she continued to jog around the track.

And so, the girls finished their laps as they all rested on the floor, some of them drinking from their water bottles.

Lottie, Laura, and Natalie sat down on the field, catching their breath as they awaited more instructions from Coach Ben.

“That girl over there..” Natalie spoke to Lottie and Laura as she pointed over at the two girls chatting with each other.

Both Laura and Lottie looked at the two girls chatting; their names were Shauna Shipman and Jackie Taylor.

“That Shauna girl is fast. She finished her laps in ten minutes. Those legs might be useful if we want to win this shit.” Natalie continued to speak to the girls as she observed them before turning back to Lottia and Laura.

Laura looked over before responding to Natalie’s words.

“Shauna is quite fast. She might be the fastest in our team, so having her is a huge advantage for us to win those games." Laura responded in agreement.

Meanwhile, Lottie continued to observe Jackie and Shauna speaking until she turned over to Laura, asking more about them.

“I think I’ve seen them at one of my classes. They seem to be good friends and always together.” Lottie asked Laura curiously, while Laura nodded in agreement.

“Indeed, Shauna and Jackie have known each other since kindergarten. They also used to attend the church with me, and we were playmates as kids, but they stopped going once they got older.” Laura explained while Lottie nodded, continuing to observe the girls talking.

Lottie nodded understandably as she continued to talk to Laura and Natalie, and this went on until Ben blew his whistle.

The sound of the whistle quickly alerted the girls to sit together in front of Ben, all of them awaiting his instructions.

Coach Ben wrote in his clipboard, taking notes for Coach Martinez so he could observe the team.

“Alright, girls. Good job. Next, we’re going to practice those kicking skills. It doesn’t need to be perfect, but we gotta have that synergy if we want to kick the other team's asses.” Ben instructed the girls in a confident voice as he began writing on his clipboard.

During this, Misty eagerly stood next to Ben closely, grinning excitedly as she saw the girls chatting amongst themselves.

“Alright, I’m going to separate everyone into pairs, and Misty will be passing out soccer balls for you guys to practice on.” Ben instructed the girls as he began to read names from his clipboard.

The pairings that were announced were Van/Tai, Robin/Britt, Shauna/Yumi, Jackie/Natalie, Lottie/Laura, Mari/Akilah, Gen/Melissa, and Allie/Krystal.

“Alright, let’s get going. Time to move those legs…again.” Ben instructed the girls as he clapped his hands to signal them to get the ball.

The first pair to step up was Shauna and Yumi, both girls walking toward Misty to get their ball.

“Let’s see that spirit today, guys, buzz! buzz! Buzz!” Misty spoke to the girls cheerfully while Yumi glared at her annoyingly, snatching the ball from her.

Yumi didn’t say anything as she and Shauna walked to a separate space in the field.

Yumi Heineken had short hair and was roughly short in height; however, many knew that she could fight like hell.

“God, she’s fucking annoying. Like, there was a time when she reminded the teacher about homework, I never wanted to slap her at that moment.” Yumi complained to Shauna as she kicked the ball around with her legs, which impressed Shauna.

“Good shit, and Misty can be troublesome, but Jackie finds her cool, so I can’t complain about that.” Shauna responded as she did some stretches before looking over at Lottie and Laura getting a ball from Misty.

Yumi noticed this and she began to chuckle, thinking how worse it could have been.

“Damn, could be worse, you could be like that girl and become paired with Laura. She’s gonna get like twenty Jesus is coming back warnings in the spam of ten minutes.” Yumi responded while Shauna shrugged her shoulders.

“I guess so, but let’s start practicing. Don’t want Coach Ben to be on our asses,” Shauna responded as she stretched her arms and legs out.

Meanwhile, Lottie and Laura were ready to begin practicing with the ball as Laura held the ball confidently.

“Are you ready, my good friend?” Laura asked Lottie with a smirk, dropping the ball to the ground, ready to practice.

Lottie smirked back as she cracked her knuckles in anticipation.

“I was born ready, Laura.” Lottie responded with a smirk.

And so practice officially begins!!

The Soccer Practice arc begins.

Chapter 8: Getting the Hang of Things

Chapter Text

(Getting the Hang of Things)

*September 7th, 1995*

*Wiskayok, New Jersey*

*4:34pm*

Lottie and Laura were practicing passing the ball with each other, their movements being coordinated as Laura cheered her friend.

“Nice moves. You’re getting the hang of it, Lottie. I know you’re gonna be a pro once we’re out in the field.” Laura complimented Lottie with a smile, while Lottie was pleased to hear the compliment.

“Thanks, you’re not too bad yourself. I feel like you’re going to be a pro as well. You have precise movements.” Lottie complimented Laura with a smile as she kicked the ball back to Laura.

“Soccer has been a passion of mine since I was a kid. I used to play it with Shauna and Jackie during our play dates.” Laura spoke to Lottie once more as she kicked the ball to her.

Both girls continue to pass the ball with their feet, kicking at each other in a coordinated fashion, as this was noticed by Van and Tai, who were also practicing.

Van had the soccer ball in her hand as she and Tai walked over to chat with Lottie and Laura.

“Holy shit, both of you are practically good at this. We are definitely lucky to have people like you on the team.” Van complimented the girls in a confident voice, while Tai nodded in agreement.

“Believe it or not, our first game is in two weeks. I’ve checked the schedule, and it’s the Wolverines.” Tai chimed in on the conversation in a confident voice as she stood by Van.

The news of this surprised Lottie as she turned her attention to Tai, eager to learn more about the team.

“The Wolverines? How good are they? Seems like we need to start preparing for them.” Lottie asked Tai curiously, her expression being focused and serious on her face.

Tai thought about her answer for a moment until she finally began to answer Lottie’s question.

“They’re pretty good. They’ve never lost a home game for the past five years, so it’s going to be hell beating them on their own turf.” Tai explained to Lottie in a serious voice.

Lottie nodded, understandably, as she smiled confidently, feeling no worry about their first game.

“Well, we just have to kick their asses, Tai. I saw a banner with the saying "We Can Smell Your Fear,” and that saying has been on my mind for the entire day, so let’s show them who’s boss.” Lottie responded, her voice growing more confident while

Tai smirked at this.

“Damn straight.” Tai responded once more with a confident smile while she stretched her arms.

Once Tai was done stretching, she looked at Lottie once more as she spoke to her yet again.

“We should be friends. You seem chill, and I would love to know you more, Lottie.” Tai suggested it to Lottie while Van nodded in agreement.

“I’m with Tai. You also have the confidence that this team needs, and I totally want to get to know you more, too.” Van chimed in on the conversation as she and Tai waited for a response from Lottie.

Hearing those words made Lottie feel appreciated as she looked over to see Laura smiling, encouraging her to make new friends.

And with that, Lottie nodded with acceptance, eager to become friends with Tai and Van.

“I would love that. If we don’t have practice, we could study at my place. My parents are never home, so I’ll need the extra company. Also, w-we don’t have to study. We can watch movies or talk..” Lottie responded to Tai and Van while suggesting ways of getting to know them more.

Both Tai and Van quickly agreed to the proposal without second thought, their faces becoming excited.

“Of course, Lot. We can perhaps study and watch a movie after, and I can bring some movies over from my home. I got Goonies, Back to the Future, Rocky, and so many more awesome movies.” Van reassured Lottie in an excited tone of voice while Laura nodded in support of this idea.

“Lottie, that would be wonderful, and it would be a great way to get to know more of your teammates, but only if you want to, no pressure.” Laura chimed in on the conversation, a hint of anticipation creeping into her voice.

Of course, Lottie quickly nodded, wanting to set plans in motion as she began speaking.

“Yes, we can do that. I’ll write down my address once we’re in the locker room. Thank you so much for coming.” Lottie responded with a smile while Van and Tai smiled back.

This moment would be interpreted by Coach Ben as he whistled at the girls as he placed his hands on his hips.

“Come on, girls, move those legs! Don’t just stand there like a deer in headlights. Let’s get going!” Ben commanded the girls in a stern voice as he clapped his hands to get them moving.

Lottie sighed in annoyance at this before she looked at Tai and Van for the final time.

“It was great chatting with you both. After practice, swing by and I’ll write down the address, ok?” Lottie spoke to the pair before she turned around to practice with Laura.

Both Tai and Van nodded, going back to practicing with each other as well.

“I’ve never been to a mansion before, so this will be exciting.” Van thought to herself in anticipation as she kicked the ball toward Tai, feeling eager to visit Lottie’s place.

Meanwhile, at the bench where Coach Ben was watching the girls, Misty stood by him, eagerly watching the girls practice, among them were Natalie and Jackie.

“Go, Natalie! Go Jackie!!” Misty cheered the girls on excitedly, waving at them as she did so.

The cheering from Misty caught Natalie and Jackie’s attention as both of them waved back confidently before going back to passing the soccer ball around.

“Hey, so. How’s everything going? I bet you didn’t expect to be paired with me, right?” Natalie spoke to Jackie, hoping to at least get to know her.

Jackie kicked the ball back to Natalie as she looked up at her teammate, her expression being friendly.

“I don’t mind at all. I’ve heard everything, but teammates are teammates, and as for me, I’m doing pretty well. I guess. Once this is over, I gotta head to the library or home to study for Miss Wheeler’s test. She teaches literature at Room 27.” Jackie responded in a friendly manner as she looked at Natalie.

Natalie nodded, understandably, as she passed the ball back to Jackie, looking over at Shauna and Yumi passing the ball together.

“I know it sucks not getting paired with Shauna.” Natalie spoke to Jackie once more, chuckling as she saw her passing the ball back to her. Jackie passed the ball back to Natalie as she spoke once more.

“It does. And Shauna is like Bert and Ernie as she’s described it. Pretty fucking inseparable.” Jackie responded with a smile while Natalie smirked back.

“Well, it makes me glad, and also, it’s nice to meet you. Let’s hope to become good teammates.” Natalie spoke to Jackie once more, reaching her hand out for a handshake.

Jackie reached out and accepted the handshake, smiling at Natalie as she did so.

“Nice to meet you as well. Let’s all do our best out on the field.” Jackie spoke back with a smile.

And so tryouts went normally, and one hour later, everyone headed to the locker rooms to get dressed and freshen up. Laura on the other hand had to leave early for a small family matter.

*5:40pm*

Lottie, Van, and Tai were finished getting dressed as the three girls adjusted their hair in the mirror, with Lottie being in the middle.

“So, eight is good with everyone? It gives everyone time to rest up for a few hours or so.” Lottie asked her friends while she continued to adjust her hair to make it presentable.

Both Tai and Van nodded in agreement at the time while Van used a lock of her hair to form a mustache.

“Sounds great to me. Tai’s parents are going to pick me up, so I’ll be riding with them. We should get there by eight.” Van responded, while Lottie was pleased to hear this.

“Awesome. I’ll see you both then. It’s going to be fun. I’ll take care of snacks, so don’t worry about that.” Lottie spoke to Van and Tai as she finished adjusting her air before grabbing her bag to head out for the day.

Van and Tai waved goodbye to Lottie as they saw her reach the door.

“We’ll see you tonight, and I’ll bring a movie or two if you can’t pick any.” Van spoke to Lottie for the final time as she waved goodbye.

Once Lottie reached the door, she waved goodbye to Van and Tai before leaving the bathroom.

Lottie walked across the locker room, making her way outside, feeling the cool breeze running through her.

“I gotta get home and get ready for tonight. I hope they don’t find me too snobbish or whatever..” Lottie thought to herself as she began walking away from the locker room, heading towards the gate.

During this, Lottie looked over to see Natalie standing in front of the vending machine, checking her pockets for any change.

“Natalie..” Lottie thought to herself as she continued to observe her teammate, searching for a dollar bill to get something from the vending machine.

Lottie eventually walked over to where Natalie was, her tall frame towering over Natalie as she took out a dollar bill from her wallet and placed it in the machine.

This caught Natalie’s attention as she turned around to see Lottie, which startled her as she backed against the vending machine.

“Oh shit, you fucking scared me, Lottie.” Natalie spoke to Lottie in a relieved tone of voice as she smiled at her, chuckling while doing so.

“Sorry, Natalie.” Lottie apologized as she continued to speak.

“I saw that you wanted something from the vending machine, and you couldn’t find a dollar, so I figured that I would help you out.” Lottie explained to Natalie while she saw her pick out her candy from the machine.

Once Natalie got her candy, she turned around to face Lottie, leaning over by the vending machine.

“Thanks, I’ll pay you back for the candy, you have my word.” Natalie thanked Lottie as she took a bite from her candy, savoring each bite.

Of course, Lottie shook her hand, raising her hand in objection as she didn’t want to be paid back.

“Please don’t worry about that. You don’t have to do that, Natalie. I have enough money as it is.” Lottie responded as she let out a small laugh, while Natalie joined in the laughter.

“Shit, that’s true. I guess you're quite the spoiled rich girl, aren’t you?” Natalie responded with a smirk, her banter making Lottie blush embarrassingly as she shrugged the comment off with a small laugh.

“Maybe I am spoiled, or perhaps I know what I want and I can take it, whenever I want.” Lottie responded to the banter smugly as she put out a smirk.

Natalie chuckled at this as she began to speak once more, her tone being a little more laid back.

“But real talk, I gotta pay you back. It’s just how I do things, but thanks for spotting me.” Natalie thanked Lottie once more as she walked a few feet away from her.

Once Natalie was at a respectable distance, she took out a cigarette before looking at Lottie.

“Mind if I have a smoke, Princess?” Natalie asked Lottie, a hint of playfulness creeping in her voice as she took out her lighter. Lottie saw this and nodded, not minding about Natalie smoking in the school grounds.

“Go ahead, Loser.” Lottie responded with a smirk. Natalie proceeded to smoke from her cigarette, blowing some of the smoke in the air as she watched the sunset.

Lottie saw Natalie smoking from behind, thinking about how cool it would be to invite her to the upcoming sleepover, and so she mustered the motivation to speak to her.

“Hey, Natalie.” Lottie spoke to Natalie to get her attention.

The sound of her name being called prompted Natalie to turn around, cigarette in hand, as she responded.

“Yeah, whatcha need?” Natalie responded in a soft voice, waiting for Lottie to speak.

Lottie stared at Natalie’s soft expression as she began to speak about the movie night.

“I’m having a movie night with Laura, Van, and Tai. Did you want to come with us?” Lottie asked Natalie, hoping she would accept the invite.

Natalie’s expression was surprised after hearing this as she stared back at Lottie.

Should she go or should she decline, not wanting to scare the others away from Lottie; however, she remembered how accepting the teammates were during tryouts.

“Fuck it, I’m down.” Natalie responded with a smirk, eager to join the others for movie night.

The teammates take a much-needed break from practice.

Chapter 9: Movie Night

Chapter Text

(Movie Night)

 *September 7th, 1995*

*Wiskayok, New Jersey*

*7:34pm*

Lottie waited anxiously for everyone to come over, pacing around back and forth as she checked herself in the mirror, making sure she looked presentable.

Lottie stared at herself in the mirror, taking deep breaths to calm her nerves.

“You got this, Lottie. Just don’t act all mighty. Simply give your friends a good time, that’s all.” Lottie whispered to herself as she waited in her lavish living room, feeling anxious about the event.

During this, the family butler approached Lottie with a plate of appetizers in his hand as he gently placed it on the table.

“I’m assuming the guests shall be arriving shortly, Miss Matthews?” The Butler asked Lottie calmly as he stood there, waiting for his answer. Lottie nodded with a smile on her face, showing gratitude for his service.

“Yes, thank you, and please just call me Lottie. It's short for Charlotte.” Lottie responded kindly as this moment caught the butler off guard, not expecting the name change.

Of course, the butler nodded understandably before speaking once more.

“Very well, Miss Lottie. If that’s your preference, then I shall respect and follow those wishes. I shall leave you be.” The Butler responded in a respectful voice, bowing as he waited to be excused.

Lottie gently nodded her head, signaling him to be excused.

“Thank you, and you may go now.” Lottie spoke to her butler for the final time, allowing him to leave.

The Butler turned around and walked away, proceeding to take care of his other duties.

Once the butler was out of sight, Lottie continued to sit on the couch, waiting for the guests to arrive, until suddenly, the doorbell rang.

The sound of the doorbell made Lottie jump from her couch, a hint of anticipation and anxiety coursing through her body as she walked towards the door.

“J-Just a moment.” Lottie called out as she stood in front of the door, her hand on the knob as she took a few deep breaths.

Lottie wasn’t used to having people at her home, and this caused that feeling of anxiety to run through her.

“Who is it?” Lottie asked as she waited for a response.

The person who was behind the door was Laura, and she responded.

“It’s Laura Lee, I’ve arrived.” Laura responded in her usual warm and welcoming voice.

Lottie felt warmth in her as she quickly opened the door, revealing Laura standing outside.

Laura smiled warmly at Lottie as she greeted her friend.

“Why, Good Evening, Lottie. Thank you so much for inviting me. We’re going to have such a wonderful time.” Laura greeted her friend as she entered the mansion, partaking in the beauty of the foyer.

Laura continued to look around before hearing the door close as she looked over at Lottie.

“You have a wonderful place, and are Natalie, Tai, and Van here yet?” Laura asked Lottie as she was met with Lottie shaking her head.

Lottie walked over to the small table where the butler had set the plate down before turning back to face Laura.

“They’ll be here shortly, but in the meantime, please help yourself with some cookies, Laura.” Lottie answered as she revealed the cookies on the table, the smell of them drawing Laura’s attention.

“Sounds nice, and I’ll treat myself to some cookies, thank you very much.” Laura responded as she walked over to grab one cookie.

Lottie stared at Laura eating the cookies, noticing her expression lighting up after each bite, making her smile.

“I’m glad you liked the cookies. I’ve made them.” Lottie spoke to Laura with a small smile as Laura nodded.

“Those cookies were delicious, and that’s so wonderful. Who taught you how to bake cookies? You’re quite the chief.” Laura complimented as she winked at Lottie with a smile on her face.

Lottie blushed at the compliment as she quickly came back to her senses so she could answer the question.

“My mother taught me how to bake cookies. Whenever she feels stressed out, she’ll always bake cookies. I used to watch her from afar when I was a kid, that is, until she allowed me to help her.” Lottie explained to Laura in a nostalgic voice, feeling warmth at the memory.

Laura smiled at this as she thought about what she heard, happy to know more about Lottie.

“Her mother seems nice…” Laura thought to herself as she continued eating her cookie, feeling more adjusted at the mansion.

Suddenly, the doorbell rang, prompting Lottie to quickly head toward the door, looking at the peephole to see Van, Tai, and Natalie.

The sight of the three made Lottie answer the door enthusiastically as she opened it to greet her friends.

Once the door was opened, Van smiled at Lottie, as she was happy to see her.

“Yo, Lot. Thank you for having us over. I’ve brought two great movies! The Goonies and Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer!” Van greeted Lottie with a smirk as she entered the home, gasping at the lavish surroundings around her.

Following this, Tai and Natalie entered the mansion as they were also mesmerized by how big the mansion was.

“Holy shit. We got Richie Rich here. I didn’t expect your place to be this big and fancy, but jokes aside, it’s nice of you to invite us. “ Tai complimented as she walked around, partaking in the lavish mansion.

Natalie nodded in agreement as she walked around, not used to being in such a big home as opposed to her small trailer park.

“So, where’s your movie room at, Lottie? I bet it’s like the actual theater room, right?” Natalie playfully teased Lottie as she let out a smirk, waiting for a response as she continued to look around.

Unexpectedly, Lottie nodded in confirmation as she began to respond to the question.

“Um..actually. I do. It’s not big, but it’s still pretty cool to see.” Lottie responded with a small smile as this surprised Natlaie and the others greatly, especially Van.

Van quickly walked over to Lottie, her expression lighting up enthusiastically as she spoke.

“Holy shit! You like have an actual theater-like room, you gotta fucking show us!” Van spoke enthusiastically to Lottie while Natalie began to speak as well.

“She’s right, I bet it’s pretty fancy looking, but show us the way, Lottie.” Natalie chimed in on the conversation as Lottie began walking ahead of them, showing them the way.

Lottie smiled as she motioned her hand for everyone to follow her, which they did.

Pretty soon, the pair walked across the long hallway before entering the theater, causing gasps of wonder to erupt from the gang.

The theater room had fancy red recliner seats with a large projector screen on the wall, and on the side was a concession stand that had snacks, including candy, popcorn, and other treats.

“It’s wonderful, Lottie. It’s like we’re actually at a theater. Thank you for inviting us once again.” Laura thanked Lottie in an appreciative voice as she sat down at one of the chairs.

Following this, both Van and Tai sat by each other, eagerly awaiting what was next.

“So, I’ll pop the popcorn and in the meantime, I’ll get the movie started.” Lottie spoke to her friends while she walked over to prepare the popcorn for her friends.

The girls sat as they heard the sounds of the popcorn being prepared, a hint of anticipation creeping through them.

During this, Van looked over at her VHS copies of The Goonies and Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer.

“Fuck it, let’s watch Beautiful Dreamer.” Van announced to her friends as she showed everyone the cover of the movie.

Tai looked over at the Goonies VHS tape before looking over at her friend.

“Hold up. You love Goonies, what changed, friendo?” Tai asked her friend curiously while she waited for her answer.

Van quickly responded as she walked over where the VCR and projector were set up.

“Just a nice change of pace, also I’m in a little animated fantasy mood.” Van responded with a smirk as she waited for Lottie to come over to put in the tape.

Meanwhile, at the concessions stand, the popcorn was finished popping as Lottie placed the popcorn in the bowl before bringing it over to her friends.

“Thank you, Lottie.” Laura thanked her friend with a smile as she took a few pieces of popcorn and placed them in her mouth, savouring the buttery taste.

Laura saw Lottie smiling back and nodding in appreciation before walking over to help Van play the movie.

This prompted Laura to hand the popcorn to Tai, telling her she’ll be helping Lottie and Van out.

“I’ll be back, I’m gonna help Van and Lottie with setting up the movie.” Laura spoke to Tai before getting up to assist her friends in setting up the movie.

Laura noticed a portrait of Lottie and her parents hung up on the wall, prompting her to observe the portrait, mostly looking at Lottie’s mother.

“She’s beautiful.” Laura thought to herself with a smile before walking over to help her friends.

And so, the girls began to watch the movie together as they chatted, laughed, and found themselves enjoying each other’s company.

*9:23pm*

Once the movie was finished, the girls all sat in their chairs, talking amongst themselves.

“That was such a great movie. I had a great time with everyone. We should do more hangouts like this.” Laura spoke to everyone as they nodded in agreement.

“Hell yeah. If we do plan more stuff. We could go bowling together. I know this bowling spot where they have lasertag, so we can try that.” Tai responded enthusiastically while everyone nodded in agreement.

“I’m down for that. Perhaps this upcoming weekend, if everyone is available?” Lottie spoke to Tai and everyone else with a hint of anticipation in her voice, hoping everyone would agree.

To her luck, Tai and the others nodded enthusiastically to the plans, making her smile.

“That would be wonderful. We should also invite Jackie and Shauna. We’re a team, so we need to bond with each other more.” Laura suggested to her friends, while Tai nodded in agreement, supporting the idea.

“Not a bad idea. I share a class with them, so I can talk to them first thing in the morning. Although I hope Jackie doesn’t bring Jeff. I don’t trust him.” Tai responded in support of Laura’s idea while Van nodded in support.

“I’m also not fond of Jeff as well.” Van chimed in on the conversation as she laughed.

Laura found herself agreeing to Van and Tai, finding herself to not trust Jeff as well, mostly because of Jackie’s safety.

“Sounds like a plan. I bet Lottie is a pro-bowler, right?” Laura responded to Tai with a smirk on her face before turning over to face Lottie.

Lottie chuckled at the claims as she let out a confident smile.

“Who knows, maybe I am a pro-bowler, but I guess you’ll have to find out this Saturday.” Lottie responded in a sassy tone of voice, smiling as she saw the girls laugh at the fun banter.

The night ended with more chatter from the girls until it was time to head home. Natalie rode with Van and Tai while Laura waited for her parents.

“I had a good time, Lottie. Next time we should have a sleepover.” Laura spoke softly to Lottie as she gently held her teddy bear tightly, piquing Lottie’s interest.

“I like your teddy bear. I didn’t notice you brought it with you. It’s cute.” Lottie complimented in a soft-spoken voice while Laura smiled back.

“Thank you. I call him Leonard. He’s my most treasured possession. I-I placed him in my small bag so nobody would notice. I know it’s weird for someone my age to still carry a teddy.” Laura responded with a hint of vulnerability in her voice as she looked up at Lottie.

Luckily, Lottie shook her head as she gently petted the teddy, feeling its warmth.

“I don’t think it’s weird. Leonard is something you treasure greatly. You should carry those feelings with confidence, Laura.” Lottie reassured Laura as those words made her smile warmly.

“Thank you, Lottie. It means a lot.” Laura thanked her friend in a warm voice.

Suddenly, the sound of the car honking erupted, indicating that Laura’s parents were here.

“I’ll see you tomorrow, Lottie. I had a great time with you.” Laura spoke to Lottie for the final time, hugging her tightly, which was returned by Lottie.

Both girls hugged for a short while before Laura released herself, waving goodbye to her friend as she walked over to the car, humming a church song along the way.

Once the car drove away from view, Lottie’s smile faded as she closed the door, locking it behind her.

“Alone again..” Lottie muttered softly as she began walking upstairs in silence.

During her walk, she thought about tonight, making her smile once more as she knew that she wasn’t alone tonight.

 *Laura’s parents’ car*

Laura hugged her teddy tightly as she looked over to see the beautiful night sky, making her smile.

“Thank you, God, for bringing Lottie into my life.” Laura whispered softly to herself as she continued to enjoy the car ride.

A nice break from practice; however, tomorrow brings new challenges!

Chapter 10: Let her Join

Chapter Text

(Let her Join)

*February 14th, 1990*

 *Wiskayok, New Jersey*

*10:34am*

A young Misty sat alone in her classroom, watching everyone getting their Valentine's card, their desks filled with cards, while her desk remained empty.

“Not even one card..” Misty thought to herself as she looked down at her knees, fighting the urge not to cry.

Sadly, she was already used to this type of rejection, people not giving her the care in the world, and this always hurt Misty.

“Whatever, it’s not like I care or anything..” Misty whispered to herself, knowing that she was lying to herself.

Soon after, she looked over to see her two fellow classmates talking, one was dressed more traditionally as a boy, while the other was dressed more like a girl, they were Shauna and Jackie.

Suddenly, Misty saw Jackie looking at her, prompting her to quickly look back down to avoid any attention. Jackie walked over to Misty’s desk and gently placed a Valentine’s card on her desk.

“Happy Valentine’s Day, Misty.” Jackie spoke to her classmate in a kind voice as she smiled at her.

At that moment, Misty saw the card on the desk, and she felt something she had barely felt at school: warmth.

It was a warm feeling that made her smile; however, part of her expected a prank or a mean saying on the card.

So, Misty gently opened the card to read the contents inside, and the words made her gasp with surprise.

“You are smart and awesome.” Misty spoke, reading the card as those words made her smile warmly at Jackie.

“Thank you, Jackie. Thank you so much..” Misty thanked Jackie with a smile on her face.

It was a moment that Misty would forever cherish for the rest of her life; that one act of kindness would never be forgotten by her.

*September 8th, 1995*

*Wiskayok, New Jersey*

*6:33am*

In the present day, the alarm clock woke Misty up as she sat up on her bed, gently rubbing her eyes as she reached for her glasses to put them on.

Once she did that, Misty got up from her bed, walked over to where her duck-shaped lamps were located, and turned them on, lighting the room up.

There stood all of the small photos that she had placed on the mirror, and in the center was the same Valentine's card that Jackie had given her five years prior.

Misty gently touched the card, caressing it as she muttered the words repeatedly.

“You are smart and awesome.” Misty muttered to herself in the mirror.

And so, Misty’s day at school went normally as she did her usual stuff, and eventually, it was time to help Coach Ben with equipment.

*4:34pm*

Misty watched everyone practicing on the field with great interest as she watched each girl dribbling the ball around the cones.

“Good Job, everyone!! Keep those legs moving!” Misty cheered for the team as she continued cheering them on.

This act caught the attention of Yumi who gave her the finger, clearly annoyed by her presence.

“Shut the fuck up, weirdo.” Yumi snarled at Misty before quickly going back to her practice routine, not wanting to engage with her any further.

This act annoyed Misty as she went silent, not wanting to annoy her any further; however, she silently continued to cheer everyone on.

Meanwhile, in the field, Shauna was dribbling the soccer ball while Jackie watched her every movement.

“Nice job, Shauna. Your skills are pretty impressive, keep up the good work.” Jackie complimented her friend with a smile before looking over at the bleachers to see Jeff chatting with his friends.

Normally, nobody hangs out at practice when Coach Martinez is present; however, Coach Ben allows some to talk if they’re not disrupting practice.

Jeff looked over at Jackie with a smile on his face as he raised his hand to greet her.

This was followed by Jackie smiling as she waved back at her boyfriend.

Shauna seen this and had a rather suspicious look on her face.

“I don’t get what you see in Jeff. The others kinda don’t like him, It’s already bad enough he’s going bowling with us.” Shauna spoke to Jackie in a confused voice as she continued to dribble the soccer ball around the cones.

“He’s not that bad. He’s nice, and we’ve been together for a couple of months now, but I also know you’re looking out for me, so I appreciate it.” Jackie responded with a small smile while Shauna smiled back.

“Anytime, Jackie.” Shauna responded with a smile as she picked up the ball to pass it over to her friend.

Jackie caught the ball flawlessly as she and Shauna switched positions.

Now it was Jackie dribbling the ball around the cones while Shauna watched her movements, observing them with great interest.

“So, Natalie, Tai, Van, Lottie, and Laura are coming to bowling, right?” Shauna asked Jackie in a curious voice while she nodded in confirmation.

“Yes, but I do want to invite someone else. She’s not a member, but I want her to feel included. You might not like it.” Jackie responded while nudging her head over where Misty was standing.

Seeing this, where Jackie nudged her head at, Shauna looked over at Misty before quickly looking back at Jackie with an unsure look on her face.

“Are you sure? I just find Misty to be kinda unbearable. I don't know, but...” Shauna responded with a hint of uncertainty in her voice as she crossed her arms.

Before Shauna could say anything else, Jackie quickly reassured her friend as she gently placed her hand on her shoulder.

“Hey, it’s okay. Misty is not as weird as people make her out to be. We all have our little quirks or whatever. Also, she’s still a member of the team, even if she’s the equipment girl. So let her join us tomorrow, ok?” Jackie advised Shauna in a gentle but reassuring voice.

The warmth of her friend’s touch and her reassurance made Shauna sigh in defeat before letting out a smile.

“Okay, you can see if Misty wants to join, but you owe me soda and fries once we get to the bowling alley, Jax.” Shauna responded with a smirk while Jackie laughed at this.

“Got it!” Jackie responded with a smirk as she picked up the ball to hand over to Shauna.

Once she did that, Jackie walked over to where Misty was sitting as she began to speak to her regarding the bowling event.

“Hey, Misty. How are you doing today?” Jackie greeted Misty in a friendly voice as she sat down next to her.

This moment made Misty turn around, and her mood instantly went up as she smiled cheerfully.

“I was doing pretty okay, but now I’m doing awesome because of you, Jackie.” Misty responded cheerfully, while Jackie was pleased to hear that answer, smiling back.

“Nicce. I was thinking, Do you want to go bowling with me, Shauna, and the others? We were invited by Tai, and I was thinking of inviting you to join us tomorrow.” Jackie offered Misty as she waited for a response from her.

Misty’s expression lit up excitedly as she let out a squeal of excitement, eagerly accepting the offer without question.

“I accept the offer! Thank you so much for inviting me! I’m going to have so much fun with everyone tomorrow!” Misty responded in acceptance as her expression made Jackie smile.

Jackie’s expression lit with warmth as she clapped her hands together.

“Wonderful! Just write down your address and give it to me, so I’ll have my boyfriend, Jeff, pick you up, and don't worry, Shauna and I are already going to be in the car beforehand.” Jackie responded excitedly while Misty nodded understandably.

“I will, and thank you so much for allowing me to join, Jackie. It means so much to me.” Misty responded, still smiling at Jackie.

Jackie soon got up from the bench, dusting herself off as she looked at Misty one last time.

“Great! I’ll see you tomorrow, Misty. Be ready by Noon, okay?” Jackie advised Misty before running back to practice on the field with Shauna.

Misty smiled as she saw Jackie practicing with Shauna, thinking about finally being included in something outside of school projects; however, this would be interrupted by Yumi’s footsteps approaching.

“Hey, Misty! This soccer ball is flat. Give me another one, now. “ Yumi barked at Misty as she shoved the flat soccer ball to her hands impatiently.

Misty stared back at Yumi for a moment before placing the ball back on the racket and handing her a new soccer ball.

“Here you go, Yumi. Have a nice practice.” Misty spoke to Yumi in a conceding voice as she smiled at her.

Of course, Yumi scoffed as she snatched the ball from Misty before walking back to the field.

And so, practice went on as normally until it was time to head back home.

*6:13pm*

After giving Jackie her address by the locker room, Misty walked across the school parking lot to wait for her parents to pick her up.

“I’m so excited for tomorrow. I’m actually going to hang out with people! But, I’m also nervous.” Misty thought to herself, feeling both eager and nervous for the big day tomorrow.

*11:33pm*

Later that night, Misty sat in her bed, gently holding the Valentine card that Jackie had given her years prior as she held it close to her chest, not letting it go.

“Jackie..” Misty whispered with a smile as she gently held the card to her face before kissing it gently, feeling the warmth of the card.

The two people who showed Misty kindness were Natalie and Jackie, and she’ll always cherish them in her heart, even if some might find it odd; however, it was the thought that counts, since one act of kindness can move mountains.

Next chapter: Bowling!

Chapter 11: Fun at the Bowling Alley

Chapter Text

(Fun at the Bowling Alley)

*September 9th, 1995

*Wiskayok, New Jersey*

*12:33pm*

The sounds of pins being knocked over and cheering filled the room as teenagers and adults alike all enjoyed the fun activity.

“Fuck yeah, strike!!” Van cheered herself on after landing a strike as she walked over to accept a hand-five from Tai.

Once Van was done, she looked over to see Jackie and Jeff sharing French fries together, laughing with each other while Van shook her head in disbelief.

“Seriously, Tai, I don’t see what Jackie sees in Jeff. She deserves someone better.” Van spoke to Tai in a voice that she could only hear while Tai nodded in agreement.

Tai also observed the couple laughing together as she crossed her arms.

“You’re right. I hope for the best for Jackie. Jeff gives me weird vibes.” Tai responded in support of her friend before she leaned down to pick up the medium-sized bowling ball.

Once she picked it up, she walked over to the lane, ready to roll the ball as she looked over at the couple laughing before turning back to face the bowling pins.

Tai assumed position as she finally rolled the bowling ball across the alley, successfully knocking down seven pins, causing her to let out a confident smile while Van clapped for her friend.

“Nice shit, Tai.” Van complimented her friend as she saw Tai strike down two more pins before she walked back to the seats to sit next to her.

Once Tai sat down, she looked up to see Jackie’s name appear on the scoreboard, indicating that it was her turn to bowl.

Of course, Jackie was too distracted talking to Jeff and Shauna, which prompted Tai to get up from her seat to let her know that it was her turn.

Once Tai reached Jackie’s presence, she gently tapped her on the shoulder to get her attention.

This act prompted Jackie to turn around to see Tai standing by her as she heard Tai begin to speak,

“Hey, Jackie. It’s your turn. Let’s see if you can beat my score, Jackie.” Tai spoke to Jackie while pointing over at the scoreboard, a confident smile appearing on her face as she saw Jackie getting up.

“I’ll be back, guys, save those fries for me, ok?” Jackie spoke to her boyfriend and friend before she prepared herself to get up from her seat at the table.

Once Jackie got up, she walked over to the alley, grabbing the small-sized bowling ball, which was noticed by Van, who began to speak up.

“Use a bigger ball, cheater.” Van spoke to Jackie in playful banter while Jackie chuckled at her teammate's words.

“Maybe I will use the bigger ball on my next turn.” Jackie responded in a smug voice before turning around to face the bowling alley, ready to roll the ball.

Jackie made sure she had a good angle, and once she did, she briefly ran before stopping at the line to roll the bowling ball.

The bowling ball rolled across the land before hitting the pins, landing a strike.

This caused Shauna to cheer for her friend.

“Good job, Jax! That was a nice one.” Shauna congratulated Jackie with excitement in her voice as she clapped for her.

The sounds of praise from Shauna made Jackie smile at her for longer than she planned before making her way back to sit between Jeff and Shauna.

Once Jackie sat down, she looked over at Lottie getting up since it was her turn.

Back at the bowling area, Lottie began to roll the bowling ball across the alley.

Unfortunately, the ball landed in the gutter, causing her to let out a curse.

“Fuck.” Lottie cursed in defeat as she waited for the bowling ball to come back to her.

Of course, Laura quickly clapped, cheering on her friend as she gave her words of encouragement.

“You got this, Lottie! Just keep calm and aim for the pins.” Laura encouraged Lottie in an uplifting voice, having full faith that her friend was going to land a strike or at least hit a pin.

Those words made Lottie nod as she took deep breaths, staring at the pin as she took the time to get a good angle.

“Focus, Lottie, focus..”  Lottie whispered to herself before looking over to see Misty cheering for her joyfully.

After a few more seconds, Lottie rolled the bowling ball across the lane as the ball rolled across the lane at a decent pace.

Eventually, the bowling ball managed to knock down all the pins for a strike, causing Misty and Laura to cheer loudly for Lottie.

Even Lottie herself let out a cheerful praise as she skipped back to where Laura was, giving her a high five.

“That was amazing! I knew you could do it, Lottie. I believed in you.” Laura congratulated Lottie with a warm smile as she saw her friend sit next to her.

Lottie felt gratitude at those encouraging words as she smiled back at her friend.

Before Lottie could speak, she noticed Misty sitting next to her, a huge smile on her face as she reached her hand out for a handshake.

“That was so awesome, Lottie! You could be a pro-bowler with that much skill!” Misty cheerfully spoke to her classmate in a joyful voice while Lottie chuckled in an unsure manner.

“I wouldn’t say that, Misty. I think I’m pretty decent at this.” Lottie responded as she felt her cheeks blush, not being used to all of this attention amongst her peers.

Meanwhile, Laura rested her chin on her hand, watching Misty talk Lottie’s ear off with a smile on her face, as she didn’t mind it at all.

“I’m glad you’re having fun, Lottie. Being in that big mansion must be lonely, right? I saw it in your eyes the other day. I hope I can be that change you need, Lottie.” Laura thought to herself as she slowly formed a smile on her face.

Laura continued thinking about Lottie for longer than expected until it was interrupted by someone tapping her shoulder; it was Lottie.

“Hey, we’re about to play laser tag, wanna join us, Laura?” Lottie asked her friend with a confident smirk while pointing over at the laser-tag room by the arcades.

Laura looked over to see the others already waiting by the area, which prompted her to get up, smirking at her friend.

“Of course, my friend. I can’t wait to kick your butt, Lottie.” Laura teased Lottie as she stuck her tongue out playfully before skipping her way to the laser-tag arena, not giving Lottie a chance to come up with a counter.

“Oh, you’ll be sorry when I’m kicking your ass, Laura.” Lottie responded playfully as she followed her friend.

And so, the gang made their way to the laser-tag booth, and they were in for a surprise at who was working there.

The person working at the booth was Yumi Heineken, a fellow member of the Yellowjackets.

“Oh, it’s you guys. I didn’t…” Yumi spoke as she looked over to see Misty and Natalie standing by each other, a look of confusion on her face.

“I didn’t know weirdos and people who can’t even pay a fucker back some money can have friends.” Yumi continued to speak, this time in a more aggressive tone as she glared at Natalie and Misty.

This unexpected moment caused everyone to look confused at the lack of context, while Laura looked over at Natalie and Misty before looking back at Yumi.

“Excuse me? That’s no way to talk to anyone, especially to your teammates, like this. Laura lectured Yumi sternly, but this was met with laughter from her.

“Shut the fuck up, Jesus freak. This is between me, Misty, and Natalie.” Yumi spat in an annoyed voice, glaring at Laura with an annoyed expression on her face; however, Laura did not show fear.

Of course, Laura was hurt by the comment; however, she was used to being mocked for her religion at this point, so she shrugged it off to not show weakness.

“Please tell us the prices for laser tag and let us have fun, Yumi. This conversation is done.” Laura advised Yumi in a serious voice, not leaving any room for further discussion regarding the matter.

Yumi sighed as she began to list the price for the laser tag, not wanting to engage any further.

“Ten bucks, take it or get out.” Yumi spoke once more rather impatiently as she tapped her hand on the counter, waiting for the money.

Everyone paid for their entrance while Lottie paid for Natalie’s entrance despite her protests, and once they entered the room.

Yumi and Natalie exchanged one final look at each other before Natalie entered the room.

Lottie and Natalie entered the laser tag room, the neon lights covering the room as both girls walked across the room.

“Thanks again, Lottie. I swear on my life that I’ll pay you back. Don’t let Yumi think I’m one of those fuckers that doesn’t pay anyone back. Money is just tight.” Natalie thanked Lottie while also reassuring her friend that she’ll pay her back.

Of course, Lottie knew that Natalie was telling the truth as she saw the serious expression on her face.

“You’re welcome, and I know you’re gonna pay me back, and Natalie, but you really don’t have to pay me back. Everything is from the kindness of my heart, but I truly appreciate you for your loyalty and honesty.” Lottie thanked Natalie as she smiled warmly at her.

Natalie smiled back as she covered her mouth, looking down at the floor before looking up to see Lottie.

“Thanks, Lots. Also, I just owe Yumi money for some weed I traded with her. I plan on selling some shit to get the money to pay her back.” Natalie responded, explaining the situation to Lottie.

Lottie’s expression piqued with interest as she began to ask Natalie about Yumi.

“Wait, you know Yumi? Are the two of you friends, perhaps?” Lottie asked Natalie curiously as she picked up the laser tag gun. Natalie walked over to pick up the laser tag gun as she smirked at Lottie.

“Nah, I usually buy weed from some asshole dealer, but I didn’t have any cash, so she went straight to Yumi. I also told her I was going to pay her back, but Yumi can get pretty impatient.” Natalie explained while she placed the vest on her chest, making sure it was placed properly.

Lottie nodded, understandably, as she placed the vest on herself, ready to play laser tag.

“I see, well, I hope you’re able to pay her back soon.” Lottie responded while Natalie smirked.

“You know I will, but anywho, let’s get going, we have asses to kick!” Natalie spoke to Lottie with a confident voice as she quickly entered the laser tag game room.

This was followed by Lottie smiling before entering the room to enjoy the game of laser tag with her friends.

And so, Lottie enjoyed a fun day at the bowling alley with her friends, a much-needed rest before a long week of practice

Chapter 12: Captain Jackie

Chapter Text

(Captain Jackie)

 *September 11th, 1995*

*Wiskayok, New Jersey*

*4:33 pm*

The girls were practicing for their big game on the field as Coach Martinez finally blew his whistle to get the girls’ attention.

“Alright, girls! Come over and sit down, we've got something to discuss.” Coach Martinez commanded the girls in a stern voice as he waited for his team to come over.

The command prompted the girls to walk over to where Coach Martinez was standing, and among them were Yumi and Mari.

“This better be fucking good. I don’t know if I can handle another lecture from him.” Yumi vented to Mari in an annoyed voice while Mari nodded in agreement.

“You’re right. I mean, the coach wasn’t here for a week, and now we gotta play catch-up on the week that we’re meant to play our game.” Mari responded with the same settlements as she sat down.

Following this, Yumi sat down as well, as she looked over at Coach Martinez, who was chatting to Misty about something.

Once Coach Martinez was finished talking to Misty, he saw her walking away before he turned his attention to the girls to begin speaking to them.

“Alright, ladies. First things first, I’m proud of the hard work that I’ve seen all day. I believe this kind of teamwork is crucial to winning our first game. However, this team needs a captain, someone who can lead the team when things get tough.” Coach Martinez spoke to the girls, which prompted the team members to whisper amongst themselves.

The whispers of speculation continued as Coach Martinez continued to speak.

“I’ve already chosen someone to lead this team, and it’s up to you guys to vote for her confirmation. I believe she can lead you guys towards victory with her great leadership skills that she’s shown throughout her time at this school.” Coach Martinez continued speaking to the girls as he was ready to pick the leader.

The moment became tense as Coach Martinez looked around the soccer team, eyeing each girl before he finally settled his sights on Jackie.

Jackie’s eyes looked up to see the coach’s eyes focused on her, and at that moment, she knew she was selected to become the team’s leader.

“Oh, shit. It’s me. I-I’m actually..” Jackie thought to herself as she felt a mixture of anxiety and anticipation, as she heard Shauna’s enthusiastic clapping.

Pretty soon, Jackie slowly rose as she walked toward where Coach Martinez was standing, observing his proud look on his face.

Jackie turned her head to see Misty jumping and cheering for her, her expression filled with enthusiasm.

“Am I really up for this? I mean, I was class president during middle school, and I’m also class president again this time around. I can handle it.” Jackie thought to herself in doubt as she finally stood by Coach Martinez, smiling at the girls; however, it was a forced smile.

Coach Martinez smiled proudly at Jackie before turning his direction to the girls to speak to them once more.

“I’ve chosen Miss Taylor for her great leadership skills. Whenever she showcased her leadership skills amongst her peers during regular gym class. It was always tough and out of love, so that’s why I’m choosing her as the captain of this team. It was her dedication to being a great leader.” Coach Martinez spoke to his team in a proud voice as he began to take out his clipboard to tally the votes.

During this, Jackie continued to think about her role as the team captain and what it could hold for herself and the team.

“They look happy. I can’t possibly fail them.” Jackie thought to herself as she mentally let out a chuckle, still feeling unsure about her role.

Jackie had always been forced to throw herself into leadership roles, mostly not wanting to disappoint her parents.

“But I can’t disappoint my parents, not like this. S-So I’ll have to accept, even if I don’t want to.” Jackie thought to herself as she continued to chuckle mentally.

Like always, Jackie forced a smile and threw herself into a position that met everyone’s standards.

“I accept, Coach Martinez. Thank you for allowing me to be in this position. It’s going to be an honor to be the captain of the YellowJackets.” Jackie accepted as she shook hands with Coach Martinez.

And so, the girls all unanimously voted for Jackie to become team captain, thus officially landing Jackie in the spot.

Not too long after, the girls were thrown back to practice while Jackie gently kicked the ball with her feet, feeling the weight of such a responsibility fall upon her.

“This should be easy, right? Just keep calm and lead everyone into victory, and I should be okay.” Jackie thought to herself as she continued to kick the ball around the field until it was interrupted by her name being called, prompting her to turn around to see Lottie standing by her.

“I want to say congrats. I have a feeling that you’re going to do great, and I wish you the best of luck, Jackie.” Lottie congratulated Jackie in her usual whispery yet soft voice as she stared at her.

Jackie smiled as she thanked Lottie for the encouragement, feeling slightly better despite the ongoing tension.

“Thank you, and if nobody else wasn’t going to be the leader, then I guess I’ll be the one to step up to the plate.” Jackie thanked Lottie with a smile, letting out a chuckle.

“But, anywho, excited for the game on Friday? It’s our first game, so we gotta kick the other team’s asses.” Jackie asked Lottie while kicking the ball with her knees.

Lottie thought of her answer for a moment regarding the upcoming game, and her feelings were excitement, yet a hint of fear.

“I’m feeling excited, although I'm feeling pretty scared. It’s my first game, and I don’t want to mess up for everyone.” Lottie responded with anticipation yet anxiety in her voice, while Jackie nodded in agreement, feeling the same way as Lottie.

“I feel the same, and it’s okay to feel that way. It’s so many expectations thrown at you that you just wanna scream.” Jackie spoke in an anxious tone as she looked up at Lottie.

Jackie’s expression quickly turned relaxed but still anxious as she reassured Lottie about the game.

“Just keep calm, and keep your mind wide open. That’s something I tell myself whenever things get tough, and I want you to do the same, Lottie.” Jackie advised Lottie in a reassuring voice as she nodded, keeping the advice in mind.

“I will, thanks, Jackie.” Lottie thanked Jackie in an appreciative voice before waving her goodbye as she went back to practice with Laura.

Suddenly, a single word came into Jackie’s mind.

Leadership

This was the word that repeatedly entered Jackie’s mind as she saw Lottie and Laura practicing with each other before turning around to see Yumi and Van practicing with each other.

Jackie continued to feel anxious about her new role; however, she pushed it down as she took a few deep breaths to calm herself down.

Jeff.

That was the name that popped into her mind, causing her expression to become filled with disgust; however, she quickly buried it with a smile.

“Oh yeah, I have a date with Jeff on Saturday.” Jackie spoke softly to herself, her tone devoid of any emotion despite her smile as she continued to stare at the ground.

Eventually, Jackie’s stupor would be interrupted by the sound of Shauna’s voice calling out for her, prompting her to look over to see her friend running to her.

The sight of her friend calmed her nerves greatly as she waved at Shauna, happy to see her again.

“Hey, Shauna, ready for practice?” Jackie greeted Shauna in a more upbeat voice, her mood seemingly getting better by the second.

Shauna smiled back as she took the ball from Jackie, ready to practice with her friend, and she kicked it with her legs.

“Of course, O Captain Jax.” Shauna responded in a playful teasing voice as she smirked at her friend before passing the ball to Jackie.

The ball was quickly caught by Jackie as she looked at Shauna with a confident smile on her face.

“Good. We got a team to beat on Friday, and we don’t want to fall behind.” Jackie responded with confidence as she placed the ball on the ground before kicking it towards Shauna.

Both Jackie and Shauna began to kick the ball to each other, focusing on their footwork as the earlier mood that Jackie felt washed away for now.

“This team is now counting on me. I can’t allow them to falter, especially Shauna. Even if it means brushing things aside, I must do it for the team.” Jackie thought to herself as she continued practicing with Shauna.

Practice continued until it was finally time for everyone to head back home

*7:55 pm*

Jackie let out a sigh of relief as she sat in Jeff’s car, looking out the window as she saw him chatting with one of his friends.

“I wish Jeff would hurry up. I still gotta finish up homework for Miss Wheeler’s class.” Jackie whispered to herself in a soft voice as she briefly rested her eyes for a few seconds before opening them.

Once Jackie opened her eyes, something caught her attention as she leaned up from the seat to notice Yumi walking away from the parking lot.

“That’s Yumi. Is nobody picking her up at this time? It’s almost dark.” Jackie whispered once more in disbelief as she suddenly had the urge to get out of the truck to help her.

Eventually, Jackie got out of her boyfriend’s truck to offer Yumi a ride; however, she was already out of sight, which made her frown.

“Damn, she’s out of sight. I really wanted to help her.” Jackie thought to herself in defeat as she crossed her arms, her expression filled with worry.

Despite this, Jackie felt proud for at least trying to help, and for her, that’s what mattered most.

Meanwhile, at the crosswalk, Yumi waited for the red hand sign to turn green for pedestrians as she sighed in relief.

“That was a close one. I didn’t need anyone feeling sorry for me or anything. I can handle myself.” Yumi spoke to herself in relief as she continued to wait.

Unfortunately for her, Yumi saw Jeff’s truck slowly pulling up beside her, causing her to quickly turn around; however, Jackie popped her head from the window.

“Yumi, hop in, quick! We’re taking you home.” Jackie commanded Yumi as she waved at her to get her attention.

Yumi stopped in her tracks, letting out a small curse before turning around and walking towards Jeff’s truck.

“Fine, I’ll hop in.” Yumi spoke in defeat, agreeing to get in the truck despite her protest.

Even though Yumi felt hesitant, a part of her felt grateful for Jackie’s kind gesture.

With that, Jackie smiled to herself as she stared out the window, feeling good about helping her teammates.

Chapter 13: Final Practice

Chapter Text

(Final Practice)

 *September 12th, 1995*

*Wiskayok, New Jersey*

*4:33pm*

It was the final day before their first game as Misty brought out the team uniforms for her fellow teammates as she had an excited look on her face.

Coach Ben saw the cart rolling closer before turning around to explain to the girls what was going on.

“Alright, girls. Today you’ll receive your uniforms, let’s make some noise!” Ben spoke to the girls in an upbeat voice as he began to clap for them.

This was followed by the girls cheering and clapping as they felt excited to finally receive their uniforms.

Amongst the cheering were Lottie and Laura, who seemed excited to finally get their jerseys.

“Are you excited for your first game tomorrow? It’s going to be so fun!” Laura asked Lottie with a smile as she waited for a response.

Lottie felt a mixture of excitement and nervousness for their first game; she knew that her team had to win their first game.

“I’m feeling both, Laura. I mean, just knowing something eventful is happening the next day is quite the feeling. I hope we can win.” Lottie responded in a nervous voice while Laura nodded understandably.

Laura could see Lottie’s nervousness on her face, and this prompted her to gently place her hand on her chest.

“When you're feeling nervous, take deep breaths and count to five, okay?” Laura advised Lottie in a soft voice as she began to guide her friend through the process.

Lottie slowly began to take deep breaths, counting to five as she did so.

With each breath, Lottie slowly felt calmer, her breathing reverting back to a normal pace as she felt more calm and at peace.

“Thank you, I feel better now.” Lottie thanked Laura with a small smile while she nodded.

“Of course, Lottie, anything for my friend.” Laura responded before turning back to face Coach Ben, who was talking to Misty.

Back at the front, Coach Ben was finishing his talk with Misty as he turned around to face the girls once more.

“Alright, I’m going to hand everyone their jersey with their numbers on the back. This represents the position of the field in which you’re playing, so please come over once you hear your name.” Ben explained to the girls before looking down at his clipboard, observing the list of the girls’ names as he began to call the names.

The first person to be called was Van, and once she heard her name being called, she got up to walk over to Misty, who was in charge of handing out the jerseys.

“Congrats, Van!! You’ll kill it as a goalkeeper!” Misty congratulated Van cheerfully as she handed over the shirt to her.

Van smirked after receiving the shirt before turning around to show her jersey to her fellow team members as they cheered for her.

“Way to go, Van! I know you’ll do awesome as a goalkeeper!” Tai congratulated her friend cheerfully as she continued to clap for her friend before giving her a high five once Van sat back next to her.

The next person to be called was Laura, as she got up from the field to get her jersey, and she could hear her fellow teammates.

Laura looked back at Lottie, who was clapping excitedly for her before turning back to walk towards Misty, who was also cheering for her.

“Right Fullback, I heard that’s a great position, congrats, Laura!” Misty congratulated Laura in an upbeat voice while Laura smiled back.

“Thank you, Misty.” Laura thanked Misty with a smile before turning around to walk back to the field.

Once Laura sat next to Lottie, she excitedly grinned as she showed her friend the number two jersey.

“Look at my shirt, bestie! It looks so wonderful! I can’t wait to wear it tomorrow for our first game!” Laura spoke to Lottie proudly, her beaming smile radiating as she continued to show the jersey.

Lottie felt proud of her friend as she smiled back at her

. “I love the jersey, and it’s going to look great on you, truly worthy of a Right Fullbacker.” Lottie responded with a smile while Laura nodded in agreement.

“Thank you, and I can't wait to see your jersey, Lottie.” Laura responded warmly as she looked down to see her jersey.

A few names, such as Gen, Robin, and Melissa, were called and were met with cheers from their fellow teammates.

Finally, Coach Ben looked at his clipboard before looking up to call Lottie’s name.

“Lottie Matthews.” Ben spoke out when he saw Lottie standing up and walking over to where Misty had the jerseys.

Once Lottie reached Misty, she looked down to see her enthusiastic expression as she saw her cheering.

“Right-Center Back! That’s a wonderful position! A tall girl like yourself is suited for such a position, congrats!!” Misty congratulated Lottie as she eagerly handed the number five jersey to her.

Lottie gently took the jersey from Misty as she looked down at it, feeling proud while she heard Laura cheering for her.

“Way to go, Lottie!!” Laura cheered for her friend while Lottie waved back with a smile.

Soon after, Lottie thanked Misty before walking over to sit back down next to Laura as she showed her jersey.

“Look at my jersey, Number five for one of the best players on the team!” Lottie spoke to her friend in a confident voice as she let out a smirk while Laura observed the jersey with wonder in her eyes.

“It looks awesome, Lottie, and I can’t wait to see your right-center back skills in action, bestie. I know you’re going to perform well in one field in that position.” Laura complimented Lottie as both girls shared a smile together.

And so, more names were called to receive their jerseys as everyone’s field positions were now set in stone.

Van #1 Goalkeeper.

Laura Lee. #2. Right Fullback.

Lottie #5  Right Center Back.

Shauna #6 Defensive Midfielder.

Natalie #7 Right Winger.

Taissa #8 Central Midfielder.

Jackie #9 Striker

Mari #10 Attacking Midfielder

Akilah #11 Left Ringer.

Robin #12 Left Back.

Gen #16 Left Center Back.

The positions were officially set with Yumi, Britt, and Melissa being backup players for the team, and with that, the gang threw themselves into practice

 *5:35pm*

An hour later, Lottie and Laura were practicing on the field as they were doing small kicks with the soccer ball around the field.

Amongst this, Yumi walked over towards Misty with a flat ball in her hand, her expression being annoyed.

“Hey, this ball is flat. Fetch me a new one, loser.” Yumi commanded Misty as she shoved the ball in her arms while she tapped her foot impatiently, waiting for the ball to be delivered to her.

Misty would place the flat ball on the rack before giving a new ball to Yumi as she spoke to her, her expression being serious.

“You know, you could have asked nicely, Yumi. I’m a person too, you know.” Misty advised Yumi in a serious voice, but she was met with a scoff from her.

This was followed by Yumi scoffing at those words as she stepped closer to Misty, causing her to back up a little.

“Or what, Misty?” Yumi clapped back as she stared down Misty, daring her to actually try something.

There was silence as Misty was about to speak; however, she saw Laura approaching Yumi, making her eyes widen in surprise.

Laura gently grabbed Yumi’s arm, which prompted Yumi to turn around to face the blonde girl.

“Yumi, leave Misty alone right now. I won’t stand for your bullying.” Laura told Yumi in a stern voice as she continued to stare down the girl.

This action caused Yumi to look at Laura with a scowl as she glared at her.

“Get your fucking hands off me, Laura. I don’t have time for your preachy nonsense.” Yumi barked at Laura; however, Laura remained steadfast in place, showing no fear.

Now, Yumi didn’t expect Laura, out of all people, to actually touch her and tell her to knock it off.

And for the bullying, Yumi never bullied anyone; however, she never liked Misty for reasons like most people had, and that was because Misty was weird in the eyes of some people.

“Or what?” Laura simply responded as she continued to stare down Yumi, continuing to show no fear as she said this.

Now, Yumi thought Laura was fucking stupid for daring to talk back to her; however, she also had a feeling of respect towards her.

“I-I was only trying to get the ball from her, Laura, and besides, she’s just weird, like just plain weird.” Yumi responded in an unexpected soft yet still tough voice as she saw Laura shaking her head.

“Yumi, she’s just as important to the team as anybody else. So please treat her with the same respect and compassion that you would expect.” Laura pleaded with Yumi in a soft voice, letting go of her arm as she waited for a response from her.

Laura sighed as she looked at her teammate, not wanting Yumi to continue in mistreating Misty.

“I know, Misty isn’t perfect, but nobody is, and that’s okay. So please at least try to treat her like a human being, and if you can’t, please ignore her at least.” Laura continued to plead as she stared at her, hoping her words would get to her.

Those words made Yumi sigh as she looked over at Misty, her expression being conflicted, mostly out of pride in not wanting to apologize to Misty out of all people.

However, Yumi eventually swallowed her pride as she began to apologize for her actions.

“I’m sorry, Misty. I-I won’t do that again..” Yumi apologized with a grumble as she sighed, waiting for Misty’s response.

The apology made Misty feel relieved as she accepted Yumi’s apology.

“I accept your apology, Yumi. You don’t have to like me, I don’t care, honestly, but I’m glad you’ve apologized, I-I don’t get that a lot, so it means a lot.” Misty responded in a serious yet appreciative voice as she twiddled her thumbs while looking at Yumi with a small smile.

Yumi found herself smiling back before catching herself as she reverted to her tough demeanor.

“D-Don’t expect me to apologize again. I-I just felt bad..that’s all, and I didn’t mean it..” Yumi quickly responded before going back to the field to practice for the big game.

Of course, Laura smiled as she walked back to the field, knowing that Yumi was lying and that she meant her apology.

Lottie had seen everything, and she curiously began to speak to her friend regarding the confrontation.

“What happened over there? I saw Yumi getting up in Misty’s face. Did she say something to offend her?” Lottie asked Laura as she looked over at Misty before looking over at Yumi, who was practicing.

“Oh, just someone being mean to Misty again. I had to say something, but everything should be good since Yumi apologized to Misty.” Laura responded with a smile, feeling confident in her intuition.

Lottie nodded understatedly as she began to kick the ball over to her friend, feeling glad that the situation didn’t escalate.

“I’m glad, and Yumi doesn’t seem mean. Unlike Becky, her heart is in the right place at least.” Lottie responded while Laura listened intently.

Once Laura caught the ball with her feet, she kicked it over at Lottie as she began to speak once more.

“She still needs work, but I feel like she’ll become much nicer to those who need it, that I believe.” Laura responded before looking over in the distance at Yumi practicing hard for the big game, and this made Laura smile confidently.

And so, the girls were ready for their first game against the Wolverines!

End of Soccer Practice Arc!
