“I’ll bet you half my fortune you’ll fall in love with me before I die.” Tony winced as another tremor ran through his weakening body. He reached for the clicker on the IV line that was dispensing the pain reducing drugs, but Natasha’s hand got there first.
“There are so many things wrong with that,” she said as she clicked the button for him.
He arched a brow.
“First, I get half your fortune even if I don’t love you. It’s literally in the contract …”
“No,” Tony interrupted. “The contract says it goes to SHIELD.” He paused. “I guess that’s close enough.”
“And second, I keep telling you I’m not going to let you die.”
“I’m pretty sure I’m dying. It’s why I’m in this fancy suit and you’re in that fancy dress.”
“SHIELD will come through,” Natasha said. “They’ll find a cure.”
Tony forced a smile. “You sound like you’re really trying to believe that.”
She rolled her eyes as the door behind them opened. They both looked over to see Bruce, dressed in a black suit and bowtie. Bruce’s face was sad.
“See? He thinks I’m dying,” Tony told Natasha. “I’m getting worse by the minute,” he told Bruce.
Natasha grabbed his hand. “We’re ready,” she said.
Bruce cleared his throat. “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today …”
--
Tony came close to the brink, as he called it. He said he could see into the other side. He was ready to head there the day SHIELD came through with the cure. It took months for him to truly recover, but he was finally declared perfectly healthy.
Natasha cuddled into his arms that night.
“You’re still here,” Tony whispered. “I told you that you’d fall for me.”
She smiled into his neck. There was no reason to contradict him.
