Work Text:
The first time it happened, Jinu almost snapped a guitar string.
He looks at the wall clock behind him. Shit. 1:15 AM. He's been trying to find a good melody for a song he's been writing (or trying to write) for almost 10 hours now. He only had an apple and bag of chips for dinner, and the weight of the guitar on his lap is starting to hurt his thighs.
"Jagiya, can we please go home now?"
Like a big dog asking for tummy rubs, Abby rolls over on the floor, oblivious to Jinu's inner turmoil. Jinu tries not to show the bemused look on his face. Did Abby just refer to him as jagiya?
Jinu ignores the fluttering feeling on his chest.
"What the hell are you doing on the floor?"
"I have been trying to get your attention for the past 2 hours, hyung. You haven't eaten a proper meal. Also, I needed some floor time. Maybe I'll finally find the bridge to this stupid song on the carpet." Abby then stretched out his arm to Jinu so he can stand up. Jinu rolled his eyes before taking his hand.
"Sorry about that, I was just--"
"In your 'producer' mode, I know, hyung. Come on. We need to go home. We can still work on the song later. We have practice in 6 hours, and Romance will have your head if you fuck up the choreo."
Jinu lets out a loud sigh. He knows Abby is right, but he's too tired to move. Now that he's broken out of his "producer mode", he suddenly feels sleepy and exhausted.
Abby pokes him on his cheek. "Jagiya~"
Now Jinu knows Abby's just fucking with him. He pushes Abby's hand away, then moves to return the guitar back to its stand and organize his notebooks and puts it on his backpack.
His stupid heart didn't get the memo, though. Jagiya. Jesus Christ, where did that even come from?
Still, he ignores that tiny fluttering feeling again, because he's tired and he wants to sleep before Romance kicks his ass during dance practice for being too slow to follow the choreo.
"Shut up. I know. Help me clean up and we'll go home."
Abby smirks, but he helps Jinu throw out the empty water battles and crumpled papers on the floor without a word.
Jinu tries not to fixate on the whole jagiya thing, because he knows Abby's always been a (terrible) flirt, and he probably calls other people that too, just to get their attention. Not that he cares, anyway.
Abby is Jinu's co-worker, his roommate, but most importantly, just a friend.
--
The second time it happened, Jinu barely even heard it. Didn't care for it that much either, because again, he's tired. After 3 hours of dance practice, Jinu was ready to flop into his bed and sleep for 13 hours straight.
Thankfully, Romance gave them a 20 minute break to catch their breath. The choreographer of the group was running them like the military, even though they still have weeks to prepare before their comeback.
Jinu was leaning against the wall while sitting down on the floor when Abby came up to him.
"Jagiya, are you alright? Drink this." Abby offers him a water bottle, the cap already opened and ready for him to drink. He's too tired to even lift his hands, so he pursed his lips instead and moved his head closer to the bottle in Abby's hand. Luckily, Abby quickly noticed what Jinu was trying to do, and helped him drink from the water bottle. When Jinu was done drinking, he was met with three of the other Saja Boys staring at them like they're animals at the zoo.
"What?"
"Is there something you're not telling us?" Baby asked, an amused look on his face. He then looked at Abby too, but Abby just raised an eyebrow and drank from the same water bottle Jinu had drank from.
Jinu tries to fight the heat rising in his cheeks.
"Whatever you're thinking, B, the answer is no." Jinu tells him, attempting to keep his face neutral. Why Abby keeps calling him jagiya, he absolutely has no idea. But he's pretty sure he's just teasing him again like he always does, so he doesn't get why the other members are reacting differently this time.
"Hmmm...alright. Keep your secrets. I will eventually know anyway." Baby tells him, clearly unconvinced.
"What, no! No secrets! Abby's just teasing!" Jinu laughs awkwardly, attempting look casual about the whole thing.
"Aww, and here I thought Abs finally had the balls to--"
"Shouldn't we resume practice, hyung? Twenty minutes are up! Positions, everyone!" Abby finally cuts Baby off, flinging his arm around his shoulder and walks him away from Jinu. Abby furiously starts whispering something to Baby, but he couldn't hear them. Mystery just seemed confused, but he keeps quiet. Romance was just as clueless as the others, but he follows Abby and instructs the back-up dancers to go back to their positions.
Surely the other members don't think he and Abby have something going on, right? Abby is clearly unserious about it. And what did Baby mean when he said Abby finally had the balls to-- to do what, exactly?
With a sigh, Jinu gets up from the floor too, ignoring the weird tension in the room. As the music started playing, Jinu pushed those thoughts to the back of his mind, focusing instead on the dance he has yet to memorize.
--
The other members don't bring it up again after the dance practice debacle. Abby still calls him jagiya even when they're around, but they don't react like they did the first time. The other dancers and staff have probably gossiped about it, but he knows most of them shrugged it off and thinks it's just one of Abby's antics, so Jinu doesn't really care about it. He doesn't call Abby out on it either because he's a relentless tease anyway, so he doesn't bother.
But truthfully, Jinu got used to it. The way the word rolls off of Abby's tongue just makes him feel... nice, for the lack of a better word. It sounds natural and fond and-- well. He doesn't know how to explain it. But friends jokingly call each other babe or honey all the time, so it's not a big deal. Sometimes friends just do that, and it's a thing that happens.
When someone else called Abby jagiya though....
For the record, Jinu didn't overreact. He was surprised, is all.
Funnily enough, it was during one of the rare days they have some time-off when it happened. Technically, Jinu wasn't even there. He opted to stay at home and do nothing all day but watch the TV shows he missed out on, while Abby went to the studio to finish the song he and Jinu were writing a few days ago.
More often than not, Abby goes live when he's alone in the studio. He says hi to the fans, asks them how they're doing, tells them that he's working on a song. So, as soon as the notification pops up on his phone, he clicks on it and watches Abby's live. Just to monitor Abby's progress, of course. Besides, it's his song too.
Jinu doesn't make his presence known immediately to the fans, and just casually watched Abby saying hi to the screen while clicking stuff on his computer.
He has to admit, Abby really looks handsome in his livestream. He’s only wearing his usual casual outfit today (hoodie and a sweatpants combo and a cap worn backwards to cover up his messy hair), but he looks good. Really good. Like Jinu, Abby gets really focused when he's in his “producer mode”, except he sometimes hums the melody of the song he's writing, or makes random noises that end up in their songs every once in a while. The fans swoon every time, and he will probably find another “abby little noises” compilation video or fan-made edit later. Jinu finds it endearing. Not like he'll ever admit it, though.
Jinu was eating his bowl of instant ramyeon while watching on his phone when he heard the sound of a door opening in Abby's live. A few seconds later, Jinu sees Baby on the screen heading towards Abby, followed by Romance who closed the door behind him.
“Oh, what are you guys doing he–”
“Jagiya, are you on live? Hi everyone!” Baby waves to the screen, smiling. Jinu almost choked on his ramyeon.
Then, Baby sits on Abby’s lap. The comments from the fans went wild.
abbys_wife0417 did baby just call abby jagiya????
ilybaby excuse me JAGIYA???

Jinu huffs. Baby is really a menace. Why would he say that, knowing Abby's on live? Their Manager would have their head again if rumors start to spread about their supposed love lives. And sitting on his lap, really? He saw Abby almost fall over from his seat when Baby immediately sat on him without warning.
Like a man possessed, Jinu reached for his phone and called Abby.
“Oh, I think Jinu-hyung is calling…” Baby says, looking at Abby's phone. Before Baby could grab it, Abby immediately swiped it off his desk and answered the call.
“He–”
“Jagiya, are you still at the studio?” Jinu asks, like he didn’t know the answer to that already.
Abby looked dazed for a second, until Baby playfully hit him in the arm. He then stood up from Abby's lap, then mouthed something to him that Jinu couldn't decipher. What could he possibly–?
Oh. Shit. He just called him jagiya, did he?
Well… in Jinu's defense, it just slipped out.
Jinu heard Abby clear his throat before he could overthink what he just said. “Yeah. I'm– I'm still here. With Romance and Baby. They just visited the studio.”
“Oh, Hi Baby, Romance. What are you guys doing there?”
“Just visiting Abby-hyung! I was just about to invite him for dinner since I'm done for the day.”
“Ah, I see. Romance, you're not coming?”
“Nope, I ate already. I was gonna stop by to say goodbye to Abs then go home.”
“Aww, so it's just the two of us then, jagi--"
“Actually, can I join you guys?”
Jinu doesn't know what came over him. But what he does know is that he does not like it when their maknae calls Abby jagiya.
He can practically hear Baby smirking over the phone, the bastard. He doesn't need to watch the live to confirm it.
“Of course, hyung. Are you okay? Do you want me to come get you?” It was Abby. How his roommate could sense his mood just from a phone call was beyond him. He inhaled slowly, trying to steady himself.
“Yes please, and I'm fine, just craving some kimchi-jjigae. There's no food left in the fridge.”
Abby chuckles. “We just ate kimchi-jjigae yesterday, jagi.”
“And? What's your point?”
“Nothing, jagi. I'll see you soon.”
“Mhm. Bye Abby.” Jinu ends the call. When he looks back at his phone, the livestream is still on.
“Damn, am I gonna be a third wheel? Is that what's gonna happen here? Chat, please save me.” Abby teases. Jinu reads some of the comments, and immediately feels embarrassed.

“Goodbye for now, little lions. Sorry to cut this short.” Abby waves goodbye to the camera, and behind him, Baby and Romance do the same. A few seconds later, his phone screen goes black.
Maybe—just maybe—Jinu has a tiny, inconvenient crush on his roommate. Who also happens to be his co-worker. And, as if things weren’t complicated enough, is also a famous idol. Just like him.
He lets out a slow breath, staring at the ceiling of their shared apartment.
Jinu is so, so fucked.
–
Thankfully, dinner wasn't as awkward as Jinu expected. Baby is still a menace though, giving him and Abby these looks, like he knows something that they don't. But Abby only had eyes for Jinu, updating him that the song is already done and that he can listen to it tomorrow after work.
“What kind of song is it anyway? Is it another one like Your Idol?” Baby asks before eating his final piece of gimbap.
“No, it's more like soda pop? Upbeat but a little bit mellow than soda pop, I think. Abby wrote most of it, actually,” Jinu replied. “I only helped with the melodies. It's cute.”
“Cute, huh? Abby-hyung, can I see the lyrics?”
“Sure,” Abby said, his tone casual.
Baby took it eagerly, his eyes scanning the screen. As he read a few lines, his face lit up with amusement. Then, without warning, he burst into uncontrollable laughter—sharp, wild, and echoing through the restaurant like a hyena.
Heads turned. A few customers paused mid-bite, startled by the sudden outburst. Abby just shook his head, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips.
“What do I do with you? I look at you but I think of you even more, you’re my only one, what do I do?” Baby reads. “You sound so down bad, hyung. Wow.”
“Nothing wrong with that, B. It's a fun song. Just wait until you hear it.”
“I know, Jinu-hyung,” Baby said, his voice low and thoughtful. “I just think Abby-hyung should finally confe—AHH!”
His sentence was cut short by a sudden cry of pain. Baby clutched his foot, wincing.
Jinu turned to him immediately, concern etched across his face. “B, are you okay? What happened?”
Baby grimaced, rubbing his foot while glaring at Abby. “It’s nothing, just… cramps, I think.”
Across the table, Abby tried—unsuccessfully—not to laugh. Serves him right, he thought, biting his lip to stifle a grin.
“I think we should head home,” Abby said, then helped Baby stand up.
“I’ll just go ahead and pay—” Jinu started, but Abby stopped him.
“No need,” Abby interrupted gently. “I already took care of it. Let’s go.”
–
Coming to terms with the fact the Jinu has a crush on his roommate-slash-bestfriend-slash co-idol was not easy.
He thought he already got used to Abby always calling him jagiya. Thankfully, he still calls him hyung more often especially when they're at work, but at their shared apartment, it's a different thing altogether.
It's how gentle Abby says it, he thinks. Jagiya, you should go to bed, we have a schedule tomorrow. Jagi, I made kimchi-jjigae, let's eat.
It's embarrassing how much he likes it. He rarely calls Abby jagiya, but when he does, Abby smiles so fondly, and Jinu has to look away before he says something cheesy like I really wish this all real.
It's all so domestic, and Jinu’s heart can't take it anymore.
So, he has decided to seek advice from the one person who could help him out with his dilemma.
–
Despite the quiet end to their relationship, Jinu couldn’t help but feel grateful that he and Rumi had remained friends. Their bond had shifted, yes—but not broken. In the glittering world of idols, genuine friendships were rare, and Jinu knew that all too well.
Even now, walking through the park with Rumi, their caps pulled low over their eyes, he felt the weight of invisible eyes. Fans, reporters, gossip bloggers—always watching, always waiting.
It wasn’t fair. He could be grabbing coffee with a friend, laughing at a joke, and by morning, headlines would twist it into something incriminating. That’s why Rumi mattered. She understood the chaos, the pressure, the loneliness behind the spotlight. And even after everything, she stayed.
Rumi is a good friend, yes, but maybe not the type of friend who you ask for advice about…crushes. Ugh. Jinu feels like a teenager again.
After venting to Rumi about his tangled feelings for Abby, she laughed at his face for a good ten minutes before a wiping a stray tear from her face and asked, “So, what are you gonna do about it?”
Jinu blinked. “Shouldn’t I be the one asking you that? It's why I told you the whole thing!”
“Then just tell him how you feel! The worst thing he can say is no.”
“Solid advice, Rumi. Also, that is simply not true. He could definitely say worse, like ‘no Jinu, I'm not gay like that, I actually just call you jagiya as a joke, or worse, I'm sorry Jinu, this isn't gonna work, I think I'm gonna have to move out–”
“Woah, woah, Jinu, just stop, stop right there,” Rumi held up both hands like she was trying to calm a wild animal. “Breathe. Please.”
Jinu exhaled shakily. Rumi sighs. “Now, are you done?”
“Yes.” God, Jinu sounded so ridiculous.
“Okay, first of all, you seriously don’t think Abby’s gonna tell you that, right?”
“I don't know..”
“Jinu..”
“Yes. Maybe? I don't know.”
Rumi leaned into his side, her voice softening. “Look, Jinu, even if Abby rejects your feelings, I doubt he's gonna say that to you. Do you not see how he cares about you? How he looks at you?”
Jinu frowned in confusion. “And how does he look at me?”
“Like you hung the moon.”
“Pshh. You're just saying that.”
“I'm not kidding! Plus, you guys have been roommates for years. Even before you debuted as an idol. Abby's been by your side through everything. He cares about you a lot, Jinu. Those doubts you're having, they're just the demons in your head. Stop listening to them.”
Jinu stared at the floor. She's right, of course, but he still can't shake the feeling that maybe he’s just assuming things. “I really, really wish I could, Rumi.”
Rumi takes Jinu’s hand, her voice warm and steady. “Look, just think about it, Jinu. Really think. The signs are all there. Either you’re ignoring them on purpose, or you’re just oblivious as hell. And honestly? I’m betting on the latter.”
Jinu scoffed. “Please. Like you’re any better. It took you, what—three years and a relationship with me before you realized Mira and Zoey liked you romantically?”
Rumi grinned, unbothered. “And I thank you for your service, Jinu. Truly. But unlike you, I actually confessed my feelings. And now? I have two girlfriends.”
Jinu groaned, burying his face in his hands. “You’re insufferable.”
“And you’re in love,” Rumi said, gently nudging his shoulder. “So do something about it.”
–
When Jinu got home, the apartment was quiet except for the sound of the TV in the living room. He spots Abby curled up on the couch, eyes locked on his phone, his brows furrowed.
Weird. Abby often greets him at the sound of the door opening, before he could even say “I'm home.”
“Hey, Abby.” Jinu asked cautiously, walking towards his roommate. “Is something wrong?”
Abby looked up, startled, as if he didn't hear Jinu come in. “Oh hey ja- hyung. Um. Where did you go?”
“Just got back from the park, hung out with Rumi for a bit. Is everything okay?”
Abby hesitated, then let out a breath that sounded heavier than it should’ve. “Ah, I see. So it's confirmed then…”
“What? What's confirmed?”
“Nothing!” Abby said quickly, but his voice betrayed him. “It’s just….I think some fans followed you and Rumi at the park. A few photos have been posted today.” Abby then handed Jinu his phone, showing him the pictures. Even with their caps and hoodies on, it’s still obvious that it was him and Rumi. There are photos of them in several angles, one of which was Rumi patting his arm, and another holding his hand. His friend was only comforting him at that time, but he can see why other people can misinterpret it.
“Oh, shit. We should’ve been more careful..”
Abby nodded, his expression unreadable. “So you really…I mean, yeah, hyung. You really should have. Good luck with Gwi-ma though. He might call soon.” His roommate stood abruptly, grabbing his coat and shoes. “I'm gonna head out.”
“Wait, Abby—where are you going?”
“Just gonna go out for a walk,” Abby said, already halfway through the door. “Don't worry about me. Call Gwi-ma!”
And before Jinu could say another word, Abby was gone.
–
Dance practice was awful the next day.
Thankfully, Manager Gwi-ma didn't really reprimand him about the photos with Rumi yesterday. Apparently, Huntrix's Manager already had it handled, so they didn't need to put out a statement. Gwi-ma just told him to be careful next time, then let him go back to the dance practice.
Although Jinu had already memorized the choreography, his energy was noticeably lacking. He’d barely slept the night before, anxiously waiting for Abby to come home. As the clock ticked past 1 AM with no sign of his roommate, worry began to creep in—until a text message from him finally arrived. Don't wait up for me, it said. Abby didn't explain why, but he assured that he was fine and would still make it to dance practice.
But it's not just that. As soon as Abby entered the room, Jinu marched towards him. His roommate was still obviously tired, his eyebags heavy and hair covered by his yellow beanie. He's also still wearing his clothes from the night before.
“Where were you last night? I was worried sick!”
“Hyung, I thought I told you to not wait up for me?”
Hyung?
“Yes, but you didn't….you didn't say where you were.”
“Sorry, hyung,” Abby said, rubbing the back of his neck. “I was at the studio. An idea hit me while I was out walking, and I just… went straight there. Stayed up all night working on a song. I didn’t even realize I hadn’t messaged you until I was done.”
Jinu raised an eyebrow. “So you slept in the studio? Why didn’t you just tell me?”
Abby hesitated. “Because I– because I didn't want you to come to the studio just to pick me up, hyung. Like I said, it was late.” Abby then walked past him, put his bag on the floor and started stretching.
Jinu knew when Abby was lying. He has a specific tell – one that he picked up after years of living with the man. He scrunches up his nose when he's not telling the truth.
And Abby had just done it.
Jinu doesn't know what to make of it. Why would Abby lie about something so small? He could believe that Abby was at the studio, sure, but he's picked up Abby and the other saja members from wherever they are countless times before, no matter the hour. It had never been a problem for him, and Abby knew that. So why pretend it would be now?
Also….hyung?
Maybe he's overthinking this. They're at work after all, and Abby sometimes calls him hyung especially when other people other than the Saja Boys are around.
It just feels weird, now. When the first word he usually hears from the man the first thing in the morning is jagiya and not hyung.
The questions swirled in his mind, but he didn’t press. Not yet.
“Everything okay, Jinu?” Romance asked, his voice low but concerned. Jinu simply nodded, then went back into formation. The music cued up, and they began running through the choreography for their comeback.
Jinu moved with precision. It was obvious that he wasn't giving it his all, but no one said a word.
–
As soon as practice ended, Jinu didn’t waste a second—he followed Abby out of the room, his steps quiet but deliberate.
“Abby, wait– where are you going?” Jinu asked, his voice calm but firm.
Abby glanced over his shoulder, startled. “Uh… home?”
“Great,” Jinu said, falling into step beside him. “Let's go home, then.”
Abby froze mid-step. There was a beat of hesitation before he turned away, gaze shifting toward the hallway that led back to the studio.
“Actually,” he said, voice a little too casual, “I might stay at the studio for a bit, hyung. I think I should finish the song—”
“Abby.”
The name alone stopped him. Abby looked at Jinu, his eyes flickering nervously.
“Can we talk?” Jinu asked, softer this time.
Abby didn’t answer right away. He just gave a small nod, then silently turned and followed Jinu back down the hall, toward the studio.
–
When they arrived at the studio, they were both silent.
Jinu knew that he should bring it up. The tension in the practice room, Abby lying about why he slept in the studio, Abby calling him hyung instead of jagiya.
But he couldn't. He feels so stupid all of a sudden. The words caught in his throat, tangled in doubt. Suddenly, he felt foolish—like a teenager second-guessing a crush he’d been so sure about just days ago. With Rumi's assurance, it felt mutual, undeniable. Now, that certainty was slipping through his fingers, replaced by a quiet, gnawing insecurity he couldn’t explain.
Maybe it wasn't true after all…
Abby's expression is unreadable. He turns on his computer and checks the equipment in the studio, but he says nothing.
No, Jinu tells himself.
Rumi’s words rang through his head. He cares about you a lot, Jinu. Those doubts you're having, they're just the demons in your head. Stop listening to them.
“Hey, Abby…”
“Look, I'm sorry.” Abby turns to him, his expression serious.
“For– for what?” Jinu asks.
“For being so weird, I guess…I just have a lot in my head lately. But I'm gonna get through this. Don't worry about it, hyung.”
That…is not what Jinu wanted him to say. He knows there's more to it, but for some reason, Abby is hiding it from him. “No.”
“Huh?”
“No, whatever it is…please just tell me, alright? Was it something I said? or did I do something wrong?”
“No, it's not about you hyung, I promise--"
“Then why are you calling me hyung?” Jinu snapped, like that word alone personally offended him.
Abby looks confused. Jinu feels awkward asking him about it, but he needs to know.
“You always call me jagiya, or jagi. But today, you kept calling me hyung.”
Abby lets out a nervous laugh. “But hyung–”
“No. The truth, Abby. Please.”
A beat. Then—
“Because I wrote a song about you.” Abby tells him. Now it's Jinu's turn to be confused.
“What?”
“Because I wrote a song about you. You were driving me crazy because I can't have you, and I stopped calling you jagiya– like you're mine, because I can’t keep pretending that you are.”
Oh.
Oh.
Like a dam breaking, Abby continues.
“Do you remember the first time I called you jagiya?”
“Yes. It happened here, too. When we were writing your song.”
Abby blushes, then looks away from Jinu. He starts fiddling with the strings of his hoodie, then exhales. “Yes, that's right. That moment, it never left my mind. You didn’t tell me to stop calling you jagiya back then, and you never did after. So I never stopped, too. I got addicted to it, the feeling of calling you mine. I knew you thought I was just teasing you, but it never was, not for me.”
“Abby…”
“I know, I'm sorry, it's stupid. I shouldn't have done that. Now that you're back with Rumi again, I felt like I should stop calling you that, so I–”
“Jagiya, look at me.” Abby looked stunned, but he looked back at Jinu.
“Rumi and I are not back together. Those pictures of us together, we really were just hanging out that day.” Jinu affirmed.
“And I never stopped you from calling me jagiya because…well. I liked it.” Jinu blushed, but he was determined. He needed Abby to understand what he was trying to say without saying it.
Abby smirks. “Jagiya, please tell me it means what I think it means.”
Jinu hates how attractive and smug his best friend looks right now.
“Well, what do you think?”
“Oh for the love of– jagiya, can I kiss you?”
“Only if you keep calling me jagiya.”
“Deal.”
In one swift movement, Abby pulls him onto his lap and presses his lips to Jinu's, impatient. It catches Jinu by surprise, but it feels like home.
Jinu melts into the kiss, just letting himself feel it. They're both in an awkward position, considering they're two men trying to fit in a rolling plush chair, but they don't mind.
Jinu doesn't mind, because Abby's hold on the back of his neck is warm, and he keeps on kissing him like nothing else mattered.
The urgency fades, replaced by something slower, deeper—like they’re rediscovering each other in the quiet between heartbeats.
Abby pulls back just enough to rest his forehead against Jinu’s, breath mingling in the space between them. “I’ve wanted to do that for so long,” he murmurs, voice barely above a whisper.
Jinu smiles, eyes soft. “Me too.”
The silence that follows is warm, filled with the sound of their breathing and the gentle thrum of something new beginning. Jinu brushes a thumb across Abby’s cheek, his touch slow and tender. “Jagiya.”
“Hmm?” Abby whispers, fond.
“I'm your jagiya now, alright?”
Abby laughs softly, but he nods. “My only one.”
