Chapter Text
Shouto’s eyes narrowed at the equation and graphs on his paper, his brain racing for some sort of first step to the answer. He groaned and face planted on his table. His studying companion, Tokoyami eyed him knowingingly and cracked a small smile.
“Do you really want to do economics?” He said, painfully blunt. Shouto sighed and rolled his eyes. He shrugged his shoulders and Tokoyami chuckled lightly. The two usually had these kinds of sessions, quietly completing their economics homework. Shouto quite liked Tokoyami and was truly overjoyed to have found a friend to navigate his very first year of college.
Shouto sat up once more and rubbed the back of his neck while Tokoyami stretched his arms out in front of him. Shouto knew he had to finish this, but his tired eyes and even more tired brain urged him to take a break.
“The library’s closing in 10 minutes, we should probably head out soon.” Tokoyami mentioned, looking at the watch on his wrist. Shouto nodded in agreement and began to pack up his things.
“I might go to Professor’s help session.” Shouto mumbled, just loud enough for Tokoyami to hear and respond with agreement. “I know there’s also the tutor club. I’d be scared to go alone though.” Shouto swung his bag over his shoulder and pushed in his chair as he talked. Tokoyami listened quietly, his usually stoic face softening for his close friend.
“Those will be good indeed. The student tutors are extremely helpful from what I’ve heard, it’d be worth it to give that a shot.” Shouto smiled in agreement. Tired of talking about school, he broke off the conversation into simple small talk and the latest books on the market.
In truth, Shouto spent almost all his time at the library. He enjoyed its peaceful atmosphere, the way sunlight leaked through the windows gently illuminating the dusty, well loved books. The librarians knew him well, despite it only being the second week of the semester. His love for literature and books could only be outmatched by his love for art.
As Tokoyami and Shouto walked outside the library and on the brick path to the dorms, the Assistant to the Dean, Professor Thirteen came running up to them. She was a sweet woman, but rarely interacted with the students themselves, unless it was necessary. “Todoroki!” She called out. Shouto turned around to face her and greeted her with a controlled polite smile.
“Good evening Professor Thirteen.” She composed herself and returned the greeting.
“Good evening Todoroki. And to you too, Tokoyami.” Tokoyami gave a curt nod in response. “Anyway, Todoroki, I assume you were heading back to the dorms. As of tonight, you officially have a roommate. We’ve been meaning to fill your room for a while and it just so happens a transfer student applied for a dorm. I’d like you to come with me and help him get settled.” Shouto blinked a couple times, his mouth agape in surprise. He gripped tighter on the bag strap around his body and clenched his jaw. Meeting someone new was not on his schedule today. He nodded and waved goodbye to Tokoyami. His friend’s face contorted in concern but Shouto turned and followed Professor Thirteen to the dorms.
In the dorms
——————-
Shouto walked into his room, the familiar sight of his bed and desk coming into view. In the same room, he saw the unfamiliarity of cardboard boxes and posters from fandoms he couldn’t quite identify. He didn’t know what he’d expected his roommate to look like, but he didn’t expect he’d be so damn pretty. The boy had green locks, in a messy fluffy array. He donned a navy hoodie and black jeans. Freckles dotted his round cheeks and shimmering green eyes practically gleamed in the sun. Their Dean, Mr. Nezu stood beside the boy with a cordial smile on his face. He was a small mouselike man, with a scar on his left eye. He was perhaps one of the kindest people on UA University's eccentric staff.
“Ah Shouto! It is good to see you. This is your new roommate.” Shouto smiled at the dean’s joyful introduction and awkwardly waved to the boy. He felt like his insides had melted, and his ability to speak was completely lost. The green haired boy smile and he grabbed Shouto’s hand with vigor.
“Hi! I’m Midoriya Izuku. I just transferred here and I’m so excited to get to know you. I know getting a new roommate is tough but I really hope we can get along!” Shouto smiled and nodded in response, unsure of how words worked at the moment.
“Hey. I’m Todoroki Shouto. I’m a business major and I look forward to getting to know you as well.” Midoriya smile brightly but the smile quickly disappeared as he appeared to be thinking for a moment.
“OH MY GOSH!! I’m so sorry,I forgot to tell you my major!! I’m an education major, with a focus on primary and middle school!” Shouto nodded politely, feeling the warmth crawl up his cheeks. Midoriya’s hands were still latched onto his. Shouto slipped his hand out of Midoriya’s grip and smiled at him.
“It’s alright.” Midoriya’s freckled cheeks flushed as he realized that he’d been holding onto Shouto’s hand for almost too long. He rubbed his arms, awkward tension filling the room. Mr. Nezu seemed blissfully unaware and hummed a strange tune to himself as he walked out the door. He paused and turned around with a small smile.
“Oh, Midoriya, your key is on your desk. Do be careful not to lose it as replacements cost quite a bit.” Midoriya nodded enthusiastically and waved Mr. Nezu a goodbye as he continued his humming out the door. Midoriya turned to face Shouto, his eyes shimmering with excitement. Shouto set his bag down on his desk and pulled out his economics homework. Midoriya’s voice seemed to falter in the silence, though being quite chatty earlier. Shouto caught a glimpse of an envelope under his bag, and pulled it out from under the bag.
“Oh yeah, that came in for you Todoroki! I found it at the mailbox when Mr. Nezu was showing me around. I figured I’d grab it so you didn’t have to.” Midoriya smiled warmly, obviously expecting some kind of praise.
“Oh um, thank you.” Shouto flipped the envelope to the front and recognized his mother’s familiar handwriting. Despite having a phone in her facility, she preferred to write to him and his siblings. Shouto smiled warmly and placed the letter on top of his bag. He’d read it later, more privately. “So…um…Midoriya.” Midoriya’s ears seemed to perk up. “How are you liking it so far? UA, I mean.” Midoriya grinned brightly and began talking rapidly, never focusing on any one topic at a time.
“I really like it here, though I do miss my mom. It has a lot of greenery, despite being so close to the city, which was really unexpected! Also it’s crazy that there are tons of good restaurants near the campus, and even the food is pretty good! You know what’s even crazier, I found out one of my childhood friends actually attends UA too! The teachers seem really nice and the classes are super fun.” Midoriya prattled on for what seemed like ages, but Shouto couldn’t help but listen in earnest and smile with him. Something about Midoriya’s voice was so captivating to Shouto. He continued to listen as Midoriya continued to talk, joyfully describing his first day at UA and rightfully complaining about all the work he unfortunately had to make up.
Before they knew it, it was almost 10pm(22:00) and nearly time for bed. Midoriya took a shower first, and changed into pajamas getting ready for the night. It gave time for Shouto to open his letter. He laid down on his bed, the lamp on his nightstand illuminating the room in warm light. He tore open the envelope and read his mother’s swirling handwriting. He read silently, absorbing each word into his memories. In truth, there was nothing out of the ordinary. He was glad to see his mother doing so well, especially compared to his days in middle school and high school. Shouto gripped the paper harder, crinkling it in his hands as he pushed the memories down towards the dark recesses of his mind.
Just as he’d finished reading Midoriya stepped out of the bathroom dressed in pajamas. Somehow the freshly washed look of his hair made him a hundred times prettier. Shouto felt his face flush and averted his eyes. Midoriya stretched his arms above his head and smiled at Shouto.
“I’m going to head to sleep. If you're not too busy, do you want to get lunch tomorrow? We could get to know each other some more?” Shouto looked up at Midoriya, flustered beyond belief. He nodded in agreement and gave Midoriya a wide smile. His brain was racing in stress, but he held his composure well.
“That sounds like a wonderful idea. I’d be glad to.” Midoriya grinned and spun in an excited circle. He thanked Shouto enthusiastically and practically jumped on his bed, curling up in his blankets. “Okay!! Good night Todoroki!!” Shouto responded in kind. Cardboard boxes were still by the window in between their beds, which Shouto had assumed would be unpacked tomorrow.
Shouto placed the letter on his desk and checked his phone. He opened his messages and texted Tokoyami that he would not be free for lunch. Tokoyami responded dryly as ever, but Shouto knew there was warmth in his friend’s rather dry texts. Shouto placed his phone down and took a long, hot shower.
Truthfully he spent much of his time mulling over the events of the day, and most of all his interesting new roommate. He thought Midoriya was like a puppy dog really, but Shouto quickly scolded himself for thinking such things about someone he’d just met. Midoriya really was a pretty boy, blessed with all the right features to shine like the sun. Though that could be more attributed to his even more sunny personality. He couldn’t quite put his finger on what he felt around Midoriya. He merely dubbed it curiosity, rather than anything more.
Noticing the water growing colder, he quickly finished his shower and brushed his bi-colored hair. He changed into cozy pajamas, long fuzzy pants and a T-shirt. He pulled on a black cardigan and laid down on his bed, scrolling on his phone. He decided to finally go to sleep when midnight rolled around. He struggled to close his eyes and relax, continually seeing flashes of his past before him. He sat up and opened the drawer in his nightstand. He pulled out the orange prescription bottle and took one pill, for insomnia. He didn’t like taking pills to fall asleep, but it was better than the exhaustion he faced in the mornings. He settled in and laid down, and the medicine took effect within the hour, his dreams filled with economic charts and mysterious green haired boys.

Chapter Text
Shouto was tickled with the warmth of bluish light as he awoke. He sat up and stretched, his red and white hair tickling his eyes. The early morning was calm and quiet, per usual. He felt around for his phone on the nightstand and the orange prescription bottle clattered to the floor. Shouto winced at the sound. He got out of bed, hearing the whining creaks of the frame and picked up the bottle.
He looked to his left and saw the green haired boy sleeping peacefully. He was snoring softly, his hair ruffled and messy. Shouto put the orange bottle in the drawer and checked his phone for the time. The phone read 5:30 and he sat at his desk, pull his sketchbook out of his bag. It was a simple thing, with a black hardcover and beige cloth binding. The interior however, was filled to the brim with colors and stickers.
Figures in all poses, sizes and shapes were on the pages, practically jumping off it, coming to life. Stickers covered the inside covers, mostly stickers that his sister Fuyumi had given him over the years. Shouto turned to a blank page and fished a pencil out of his bag and began drawing. He didn’t know what, but nonetheless his pencil moved fluidly and with purpose as he etched his soul onto the page.
Shouto’s multicolored eyes never left the page even as the sun rose and peaked through the windows. Even as his new roommate awoke and wandered towards Shouto’s desk.
“Woah you’re an artist? That’s so cool!” Shouto’s heart nearly jumped out of his chest and he spun around. There was a sharp black line where his pencil had been when he was startled. “I am so sorry!! I really didn’t mean to scare you,” Midoriya exclaimed with a worry-filled voice. He gripped onto his long sleeves tightly as his green eyes drifted towards his feet.
“It’s alright, no need to be sorry.” Shouto sighed and closed his sketchbook. He’d have to finish drawing later. Unsure of what to do, Shouto offered an awkward half-smile and looked at Midoriya. “Uh…How did you sleep?”
Midoriya was quiet. Uncharacteristically so. In the very little time Shouto had known him, he had always been a bubbling ray of sunshine. Though, how would Shouto know really? They’d only just met after all.
“Fine.” Midoriya’s voice was near silent. He still held fast onto his sleeves. He seemed…distant. Distracted.
“Midoriya, are you alright?” Shouto stood and put a hand on Midoriya’s shoulder. He flinched at the touch, becoming even more tense than he was before. Shouto silently cursed at himself, and stepped away. “I’m gonna get dressed, maybe you should rest for a bit.”
In a near instant his demeanor changed entirely. “Aw, Todoroki, you’re so sweet for worrying! I’m alright, don’t worry about me hehe!” Midoriya’s smile beamed once more. Shouto could still see the tension in his demeanor. In the way he shrunk himself to near nothing, trying to take up no space at all. Shouto nodded nevertheless.
“Yeah.” Shouto really didn’t know what else to say. His eyes darted from a shimmering smile and a tense body, before he decided to drop it completely. He grabbed clothes from his dresser and threw on black jeans and a white T-shirt. He considered his favorite dark blue hoodie, but ultimately chose a plain black hoodie instead.
Midoriya dressed shortly after Shouto, giving the red and white haired boy some time to work on his homework. He only had one class today, around 8:00am. He didn’t like being up early, but he had such trouble sleeping that being up at ungodly hours was the usual. He checked his phone for the time once more and found it was already 7:00. He packed up his things and waited for Midoriya before he left.
Truthfully he didn’t know why he was waiting. Midoriya wasn’t even in his class but it felt wrong to leave him alone in the dorm.
Eventually Midoriya came out of the bathroom wearing a baggy sage sweater and ripped jeans. He wore black converse and picked up an anime themed tote bag. He swung it on his shoulder and looked up with surprise. A light, gentle blush spread across his freckled cheeks.
“Oh Todoroki, were you waiting for me?” Shouto nodded hesitantly. He didn’t really want to come off creepy. Midoriya smiled warmly, his green eyes practically glowing. “Thank you so much!” Shouto nodded and swung his own backpack over his shoulder. He opened the door and held it open for Midoriya.
“What class do you have this morning?” Shouto asked as Midoriya stepped into the hall. He locked the door and began walking towards the main entrance of the building, Midoriya following close behind.
“Oh I don’t have a class till the evening. I preferred that over morning classes, since I’m a bit of a heavy sleeper.” Midoriya replied with a grin. “So, what class do you have?”
“I have a drawing class. It’s a hobby, but I do want to get better.”
“It’s so cool that you draw. I’m really bad at it, trust me.” Midoriya laughed as Shouto smiled.
“I’m sure you’re great. Maybe we could draw at lunch?” Midoriya smiled and agreed in enthusiasm. Shouto couldn’t remember the last time somebody spoke to him with such enthusiasm. With such warmth.
The walk to Shouto’s class went quickly, almost too quickly. They had chatted happily all the way there. Shouto was also glad to note that the tension that had been eating away at Midoriya seemed to dissipate over the course of their walk. By the end of it, he seemed back to being sunny as usual.
Despite this being his favorite of his classes, Shouto couldn’t help himself but count down the minutes till lunch. He wasn’t excited to see Midoriya at all, he was just hungry. At least that’s what he told himself.

Chapter Text
Izuku’s arms burned. He’d have to patch them up later. He sat in the small cafe near campus and patiently waited for his coffee and his friends, fiddling with the ropes on his sweater. Slow quiet jazz played from the speakers and the occasional bell by the door.
“Oi, dumbass!” Izuku turned and spotted his childhood friend and the blond’s red haired companion. Izuku waved them over with a sunny smile and then sat down across from him.
“Hi Kacchan, Kirishima!” Bakugo grumbled out a hello and leaned back into the cushioned chair, casually placing his arm around Kirishima’s shoulders.
“Yo Deku! How are you doing? Did ya like your dorm?” Kirishima asked, with a wide grin on his face. Izuku nodded with vigor and absolute excitement, his eyes sparkling with joy.
“Yeah! My roommate’s really cool too. He’s kinda quiet, but very kind.” Bakugo looked at Izuku, confusion written on his face.
“I thought you weren’t supposed to get a roommate, Deku. What the hell happened to that?” Izuku shrugged and Bakugo scoffed. “Fucking dumbasses, can’t get anything right.”
“It’s really okay, Kacchan. It’s a nice surprise.” Deku shifted in his seat. He squeezed his hands till his knuckles turned white, eyes staring out the window. How was he going to tell them? They’d be furious. They’d hate him. Anxiety pulled at him, grasping his insides, turning them whatever which way. Tension bubbled in his stomach, making nausea build up. His head was spinning, a thousand thoughts all at once. He could practically hear the scolding, the harsh words, the pain building and building and-
“Midoriya!” The world came back into focus. Kirishima’s eyes narrowed at him with worry. Izuku immediately threw on his usual happy facade, yet Bakugo still saw through the smile. Still saw the way his smile didn’t reach his eyes.
“You’re fucking hiding something from us.” Bakugo paused for a moment and his eyes widened in haunting realization. “Show us your arms.”
“I really-“
“Now.” Izuku reluctantly pulled back his long sleeves and revealed scabbed over cuts on his forearms. Bakugo rubbed the bridge of his nose. Kirishima’s mouth hung slightly open.
“I…I know. I’m sorry.” Izuku's hands balled into fists as Kirishima looked at him with concern. Kirishima gently grabbed Izuku’s clenched fists.
“Midoriya. This isn’t a good way to deal with things. You can talk to us.” Izuku’s eyes watered as Kirishima reassured him. He nodded silently and pulled his arms back, placing them on his lap. Bakugo sighed and rubbed the back of his neck.
“You really don’t have to go through all this shit alone, Deku. Fucking talk to us. We’re here for a reason.” Izuku nodded again, his gaze cast downward. It was silent at their table. Amidst the noise of the cafè, Izuku’s mind stewed in anxiety.
He scolded himself for being such a burden. How could he? Why was he like this? Such a weakling. A disgrace.
His eyes glazed over and his mouth curled into a tight smile, not quite reaching his eyes the way it usually did. The way it should’ve.
“Deku, you’re doing that bullshit again.” Bakugo crossed his arms and studied the green haired boy for a moment before rolling his eyes and letting out an exasperated groan. Kirishima still looked at Izuku with worry.
“I’m okay Kacchan. Really, it was just a mistake. There’s no need to worry about me!” Izuku clapped his hands together and straightened his spine. “Now then, how are things going with you guys?” Kirishima and Bakugo eyed each other knowingly.
Kirishima spoke first and light conversation filled the table. The dark lingered below the surface, eating away at Izuku with every moment. He should’ve just stayed home.
He never should’ve gone to college so far away.
