Chapter Text

Evangeline was only 16 when she decided she wouldn’t be a boy anymore. This was not uncommon at all in 1500 A.D Greece. Along the coastal Mediterranean regions, where the sky was always dazzling and the stars seduced the clouds. Evangeline was a peculiar case, though after her mother, Nyx, was assaulted by Zeus, Nyx fell pregnant with a little Evan. Nyx was then taken in by a close friend named Eclipse. Eclipse quickly fell for Nyx, and Nyx fell for Eclipse, and the way the princess charming swept our protagonist's mother off their feet was astounding, from date nights every Wednesday to paintings dedicated to their eternal love. It was clear that their little boy (eventually girl) would be loved by their parents regardless.

Over nine months, Eclipse supported Nyx with the pregnancy, and soon they had a baby boy named Evan. They raised him in Greece, specifically in Bali, located not far from ancient Astale.

Evan’s childhood was rare; not only was he raised by two married women, but they were raised by the Goddess of the Waterfall and the Goddess of Divine Moonlight. The same ones who had revolutionized queer rights in Uptown Asgard, the very same ones who confronted Zeus about his predatory nature.

As Evan grew, he always felt a deep sense of incompleteness, a rooted melancholy. An itching need that he was incomplete. Being raised by two divine women, Evan always admired and yearned to be like that. The way the women raised the silver-haired child - they made him believe he could be whatever he wanted to be, and eventually he did.

“Mother, I’m going down to the river with Scarlet.” The night-eyed teenager announced to their mothers. As Scarlet was the married woman’s second child, Scarlet was the chill goth daughter - the one that everyone knew would eventually take Nyx’s place within the moon. Scarlet looked exactly like Nyx with grey eyes, stark black hair, and charcoal skin, whereas Evan looked similar to Zeus. His silver hair flowed to his waist, and his eyes dark as the moon. One positive characteristic was that he looked similar to Eclipse- they had the same eyes and the same silver hair.

“Evan, dearest… we need to talk to you.” Nyx led Evan to the living room of their palace. “What’s this about?” Evan mumbled as his long hair slipped under his ear. “Darling, you can’t just sit around all day basking in the moonlight.” Nyx scolded Evan softly, understanding his predicament yet slightly judging his aristocratic lifestyle.

“Evan, sweetheart, we want you to join the royal guard.” Nyx calmly stated, not wanting to scare Evan.
“You’re kicking me out?!’’ The raven-haired teenager exclaimed, partly out of shock and partly out of fear.

“If you do, we’ll give you a golden apple.” Eclipse bargained. Evan’s demeanor shifted into interest and curiosity. “I need help to train in combat at least.” “That could be arranged.” Eclipse chided gently while a smirk played off her face - the type of smirk filled with pride for her child.

Over the course of a few months, Eclipse trained Evan in hand-to-hand combat, perfecting his kicks and dagger skills.

“Mom, do I have to?” Evangeline groaned as they suffered defeat from Scarlet's brutal upercut. Scarlet helped Evangeline up and got into position to spar once again.
“Training is useless without practice, dear child, now again,” Nyx instructed the pair to commence.

Evangeline put their focus on Scarlet. The pair eyeing each other down like tigers. Evangeline led the first strike; their clenched jaw hidden by their left fist as their right fist jabbed Scarlet’s kidney. “Good shot, keep it up,” Nyx encouraged the silver-haired child. Scarlet doubled over briefly before retaliating by tackling Evangeline to the ground, straddling them to pin them and prevent escape. Evangeline soon landed a punch to the nose, opening up a window to escape and stand up. As Scarlet's eyes watered and her vision blurred, Evangeline took the opportunity to put Scarlet in a headlock until she tapped out.

“Holy fucking shit.” Scarlet panted, out of breath and wobbly on her legs. “Sorry about that.” Evangeline apologized to their sister, fixing up her hair. “You did good, don’t apologize,” Scarlet ordered. "You're ready, little one." Nyx cooed to Evangeline. "You must leave before the last train on Friday, but for now, we must celebrate my daughter's achievements," Nyx emphasised the word daughter gently.

Evangeline started hormone therapy through Nyx’s homemade potions and Idun’s golden apples before the celebratory feast. After all, Odin's sons would be there too. As the time eventually arose, Eclipse and Nyx dressed their daughters with loving hands that were meant for holding plump cheeks and whispered comforting words. Nyx wore an ankle-length navy blue ball gown, matching Eclipse's Navy blue suit. Scarlet wore a slim-fit, red wine-colored dress with black and silver embellishments, accompanied by multiple silver rings stacked on her slender fingers. Evangeline wore a similar coloured rococo dress and gold embellishments.

Hours later, the ball commenced. Guests cheered and drank, yet a singular guest was there out of obligation: Loki Odinson. He brooded in the corner, occasionally flirting with noble ladies as the prince normally did. Although his eyes drifted towards Evangeline one time too many.

Chapter Text

As the prince occasionally glanced at Evangeline, Evangeline noticed his slight smirk and his raised eyebrow. She waltzed over her grey orbs pooling into his green eyes. She was there to let him know that she had seen him, that she had seen his façade of nonchalance.

“What do I owe the pleasure of this encounter, Evangeline?” Loki said, the smirk not faltering as he enunciated her name.

“Your eyes bore into mine, perhaps I should ask the same, your highness,” Evangeline replied with the same condescending tone. “Joining the royal guard, are you? Are you sure you're up for the challenge, dearest? It would be your job to protect the royal family.” Loki challenged her, as evidenced by the way her stance fidgeted and the way her eyes darted from him to her reflection in the ceiling mirror; the god of lies and mischief well understood the tell-tale signs of deceit. There was undoubtedly something about her that he hadn't recognized in other women in his life.

“Your highness, you are quite a popular one, aren't you ?” Evangeline announced to the silver-tongued god. “I am most known for my skills, but I assure you I am well-trained to defend myself in the face of danger, dear.” The sly fox of a god exaggerated his hand gestures, almost as if he were animated. His fingers swirled, and a glow of green dust like spectacles emerged from seemingly within. A dagger of green and gold materialized in his silky palm. A double-edged dagger intricately carved, made for royalty - clearly for him especially.

Thor eyes his brother chatting with the host’s daughter. Thor raised an eyebrow and tilted his head the way a golden retriever would. Thor was the type who wouldn’t splash a fish, the type who’d support a person within reason… sometimes even without cause. Although when his brother came around, reason sometimes flew out the window. “BROTHER. ARE YOU BOTHERING THE MAIDENS?” Thor boomed as per usual. “Honestly, how do you keep your food down?” Loki found himself struggling with the urge to stab his brother in the throat… an urge that has become quite common, yet still a strong urge.

Nyx’s ears perked up at Thor’s loud voice. She proceeds towards the three, her eyes piercing at anyone who dared stand between them. “Is everything towards your satisfaction, your highnesses?” She said with the slightest shiver of coldness. She towered over the men before kindly touching the cheek of her daughter. “Yes, ma’am.” Thor quivered, suddenly flustered after being met with such a powerful woman. “Evangeline and I were just talking about the royal guard; perhaps Thor should join. It’s good for a young man to learn such valuable lessons.” Loki snarked, intending to throw Thor under the bus.

“Good, see to it that you, too, will join and watch over them,” Nyx ordered the Prince. “Madam, that’s unace-” Loki tried to rebut. “Of course, Miss Nyx, it is certainly well training for a person of our regard.” Thor now had his chance to laugh as the tables turned on Loki. “It shall be an honour to have you work beside my daughter.” Nyx glanced over to the now flustered mess that was shaped like Evangeline. "Mother, maybe this isn't the best idea..." Evangeline mumbled, attempting to convince her mother to let her out into the world alone. "Hush now, my sweet. Being in the company of Odin's sons is a high priority." Nyx commanded gently yet firmly. Loki felt the smirk slightly reappear on his face. "High priority, hm?" Loki snickered until Thor slapped the back of his head. "We will see to it, Miss Nyx." Thor gleamed. "It's Missus." Eclipse crept her hand around Nyx's waist, as she quoted in a possessive tone.

Chapter 3: Perfect Timing

Chapter Text

“MoOom,” Evangeline whined. “Why would you embarrass me like that. In front of the princes!” Evangeline flopped into the lounge couch like the little angsty teenager she was.

“My love, we only want what’s best for you,” Nyx reassured the little minx. Eclipse gracefully kneeled before the girl, cupping her cheek in her palm. “Besides, having the Princes both with you at training could earn you a good status, they are highly pined over y’know.” Eclipse raised her eyebrows twice as a smirk slowly graced her lips.

Nyx hit the shoulder of Eclipse with a playful snarl. “Leave the poor girl alone.” Eclipse rolled over dramatically, clutching her shoulder as if shot with a missile. “You wound me, you hypocrite!” Eclipse stands up and dusts her shoulder of nonexistent debris. Nyx saunters closer and kisses the nape of Eclipse, sending shivers down the silver-haired god's spine.

“Redemption is possible, I suppose…” Eclipse skimmed her long fingers over the chiffon of Nyx’s dress, scratching Nyx with her nails on her back. “What am I witnessing?” Evangeline mused aloud, somewhat surprised but happy to see that her mother was still in a happy marriage.

Eclipse turned her head to the confused teenager before sticking her tongue out and carrying Nyx to their bedroom, leaving the youngling alone in their living room.

Meanwhile, the servants ushered the guests to their carriages. All except for one, the infamous trickster- Loki. He decided to snoop a little, figure out why the most powerful goddesses in the realm not only chose to reside on earth but did so without offerings to the Allfather.

Loki would not expect to find his answer so soon though. He made his way to the garden to find Evangeline in the stream, lying amongst the rocks. Evangeline lay there solemnly and read over her diary. The water cascaded over the edge near her. She found a place to comfortably sit right on the little edge. Evangeline was surrounded by algae and a few lily flowers here and there.

At first, Loki was confused. He thought Evangeline might be hurt and possibly drowning, but as his legs pushed him closer, he saw Evangeline’s eyes skimming the diary, her cheeks flushed and lips pursed.

Evangeline sat more upright as she heard the rushing footsteps. The water swished at her sudden jolt, and a toad even jumped up. Her head tilted as she recognised his face. Most guests have already left for the night.

Loki himself wasn’t quite sure why he was here, sure he wanted to snoop, but why did he rush over to see if she was okay? It’s not like he knew her well enough to be concerned if she lived or died. Heimdal knows he’s looked the other way at worse atrocities.
“Loki?” Evangeline called out to him as she made her way out of the shallow stream. “Why are you here?”

“I have a better question.” Loki pointed up and down her, then vaguely gestured to the pond/waterfall.

“I asked first,” Evangeline stated after, wanting the raven-haired god to answer. “It’s rude to sneak up on maidens,” Evangeline grunted as she wrung out her hair.

“You’re in a bog of water… sitting next to toads and algae and your biggest concern is propriety and etiquette ?” Loki looked amused, and a small chuckle escaped his throat. “Do you need help with your dress?” He asked once more, his hand extending towards the soaked woman.

“You still haven’t answered.” Evangeline tilted her nose in the air as she shook her head at his extended arm.

“I’m here because I have nothing better to do, I… I thought you fell into the water and needed help.” Loki’s outer shell of superiority was revealed for what it was- a shell.

“Thank you.” Evangeline lowered her gaze slightly, a sign that she was no longer seeing him as a threat to be bested. “I like lying in water when I journal, my mother being Goddess of waterflow and all.”

“Ah.” Loki could feel the awkward silence filling the unsavoury gap between them. He was certain Evangeline could feel the bridge, too. “You should go inside before it gets too cold.”

“Silver tongue turned to lead brother?!” Thor's booming voice once again interrupted them for the second time that night. “I figured you might still be here if Heimdall didn’t see you on Asgard.”

“Impecable timing, you oaf.” Loki turned to Thor with his hands clenched.

Chapter Text

“Thor, what a surprise,” Evangeline said in a monotone, flat voice. Her fallen expression clearly expressed the inner disdain for Thor and his loudness.

“Evangeline! You’re supposed to be resting, but you are still coming to Asgard tomorrow, right? The whole joining the royal guard stuff?” Thor’s brow furrowed, questioning if Evangeline would make do on her promise.

“I made a deal with my mothers, if I joined the guard, then I could have an apple of Idun. Mother Nyx was meant to hand it to me earlier, but she and Mama Eclipse got… romanticle and gross and stuff.” Evangeline scrunched her upper lip at the thought of her mothers getting it on.

“Why don’t we all stay here in Astale for the night? It’s late, and Heimdal will have our heads if we wake him to open the Bifrost.” Thor nervously chuckled, his shoulders bobbed up and down as he sighed heavily.

“Astale is three kilometers west, dumbass,” Loki muttered as the big, broad man got the name of the city wrong.

“Where are we then?” Thor suddenly questioned his existence.

“Bali, Crete.” Evangeline’s face was deadpan. Her hair had begun to frizz up from the water and the harsh, cold climate.

“Why are you wet?” Thor asked once more, his questions almost like a bottomless pit of curiosity.

“I was in the water having a good time before you two showed up- Y’know what it’s pointless arguing with you two.” Evangeline, exasperated, all she wanted was Idun's apple. Now she has to deal with a big baby of a man and the reincarnation of Crowley from Good Omens.

“Well fuck me for being concerned.” Loki was then promptly hit in the back of the head.

“Loser.” Thor puffed his chest.

“Himbo.” Loki pulled out a dagger

“Wanna go, little guy.” Thor summons Mjolnir with the outstretched palm of his hand.

“Can you take it, you oaf?” Loki threw his dagger in the air and flipped it.

“CAN BOTH OF YOU SHUT THE FUCK UP.” Scarlet appeared from her window on the ground floor. She trudged the long walk from the fortress, her long nightgown getting muddy while her short hair stood up in all directions.

Loki silently put away his dagger, and Mjolnir went back into the clouds. The trio stood in shame as the younger entity marched towards them. Loki and Thor had their heads bowed down and feet together neatly.
“Y’know, I chose the ground floor so I could be close to nature, so that I can hear the birds sing in the mornings. I chose the ground floor for peace. THIS IS NOT PEACE.” Scarlet’s tan skin was visibly flushing up, as her voice loudened.

“You chose the ground floor because you are afraid of heights.” Evangeline still had a deadpan face. Her eyes sunken in and eyebrows perched. The silver-haired woman simply needed her rest. Rest did not include two rowdy men and a younger sister.

“Shut up. Oh, and Mama Nyx is calling- the apple awaits, I’ll deal with the boys, yeah?” Scarlet threw air punches at Thor, imitating punishment.

“You’re a godsend.” Evangeline thanked her sister before making the journey inside. A servant waited with a towel, indicating that the nightly cold plunge was a common occurrence.

“Evangeline- wait!” Loki stepped towards the white haired maiden, his hand reached out. He stood still for a moment as Evangeline turned back around.

“Yes?” She said gently, the earlier anger and annoyance had already faded.

“When you leave with us tomorrow, to come to Asgard, may I have the honour to escort you?” Loki’s signature smirk returned- this time without any shame.

“No,” Evangeline said in that same gentle and sweet tone.

“YOU JUST GOT REJECTEDDDD” Thor slapped Loki’s back as he laughed loudly.

“Shhhh,” Scarlet said while rubbing her eyes. “Please be quiet.” Scarlet had almost given up on controlling the two insufferable gods.

“I’ll be off now.” Evangeline walked over to the fortress, her soaked dress slightly getting stuck with leaves and grass as she walked in the garden.

“I’ll show you to the guest rooms.” Scarlet sighed sleepily; meanwhile, Evangeline had already made her way inside- and out of sight.

“BROTHER TOMORROW'S QUEST WILL BE GLORIOUS. WE SHALL JOIN THE ROYAL GUARD AND SLAY ALL-” Thor is silenced when Scarlet had resorted to jumping on his back and putting him in a chokehold.

“SHUT THE FUCK UP. SHUT UP. SHUT. UP.” Scarlet then continued to wrestle the broad god in the middle of the night. In the palace gardens.

“What the actual fu-” Loki attempted to say something, but was then interrupted.

“SHUT UP! SHUT UP! STOP TALKING! YOU’RE NEXT YOU FAG.” (writer's note: I’m gay) Scarlet was foaming at the mouth as Thor slowly passed out.

Loki nodded as Scarlet climbed off Thor, giving the God of Thunder a chance to breathe. Thor dropped to his knees, gasping for oxygen. As Thor gasped, he was sure not to make much noise, or he would feel the wrath of Scarlet once more.

“Now onto the guest rooms.” Scarlet dusted her sheer robe before picking some hair from the feathered trim. She led the two gods to the guests' rooms on the second floor, up the stairs, and to the right.

Opposite the two guest rooms was Evangeline's, but she was not present- and wouldn’t be for at least an hour more.

“Evangeline is with Mama Nyx right now, but please make yourselves at home, and don’t make any noise… or else.” Scarlet threatened with much promise.

“Also, there’s butter chicken in the kitchen if you want.” Scarlet left the two gods and went back to sleep.
