Surely Heaven Waits For You

Summary:

In order to save Daniel, Margaret made a deal with the devil. Now Buck needs to complete his mission, or usher in the end of the world.

***

Inspired by the "She thinks I'm Satan" line. Buck may not be Satan, but Bobby certainly is.

Notes:

This fic takes Biblical mythos and twists it for my purposes. Title of the fic comes from the song Carry on my Wayward Son by Kansas.

This fic will be canon complaint when I want it to be, but will ultimately be it's own thing.

Also I know the tags say Athena is a witch, but that's not all she is. Stay tuned to find out.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter Text

He looked nothing like she expected him to. He looked just like a normal middle aged man.

“What is it you desire?” He asked.

Margaret swallowed. She could feel the tears behind her eyes, but she couldn’t let them out just yet, “My son is dying. The doctors say there is nothing they can do to save him. Please. I cannot lose my boy.”

“And what are you willing to do in exchange?” He asked.

“Anything.”

He smiled at that, “I will save your boy. And in exchange, you will bring my own son into this world. You will raise him as his own and when the time is right, I will come into his life and make sure he is on the right path.”

The tears started to come now. She knew what this would mean, but she had to think of Daniel. A mother was never supposed to bury her child.

“I’ll do it,” She said.

He smirked, “Good.”

And then he was gone.

Margaret waited a couple days and then took a pregnancy test. She told her family, but did not tell them about the deal- did not tell Philip the child was not his.

Daniel was upset at first, thinking his family was replacing him, but Margaret assured him that was not the case. And when Evan was born and they were told he was a match for Daniel, the excitement of having a brother took over.

There were many procedures, but by the end of it, Daniel was healthy and alive . He went through remission and on the night he was officially declared cancer free, Margaret went back to the crossroads and whispered her thanks to the being who saved her son: to Satan himself.

Evan grew up with a loving father, sister and brother. And with a mother who was… distant to put it kindly. It was clear she loved Maddie- her only daughter. And she doted on Daniel. But when she was around Buck felt like he was just… there.

She never went to his games. He always got Daniel’s hand me downs even though they could afford to get Evan his own things. Philip tried to say that it was just because they had been so close to losing Daniel. But that didn’t make sense to Evan. Philip and Maddie also almost lost Daniel and they both are able to show their love.

Maddie becomes a nurse and gets married. Daniel becomes a doctor. And Evan? Well, it seemed like he could never do anything right. School had never been his strong suit, so after trying a semester of community college, he decided to take the money he would have spent on college and find someplace where he fit.

Philip understood, but Margaret couldn’t even look at him. He knew he likely wasn’t going to go back to Hershey.

He talked to Daniel and Maddie before he left. Both Daniel and he tried to convince Maddie to leave Doug and go with him, but she wouldn’t listen.

“Look out for her,” Evan said.

“I always do,” Daniel sighed, “It’s why I got a job at this hospital- I want Daniel to know I’m watching him.”

Evan nodded. It was hard to leave, but easier knowing Maddie still had someone in her corner. But it also felt like his family didn’t need him.

“You’ll call us, yeah?” Daniel asked, “Send us post cards? Let us know if you're okay?”

“Yeah, of course.”

Daniel held out his pinky and Evan smiled- it was something the three siblings did when they were making an unbreakable promise.

And so he was off and at each place he settled for a bit, he sent a postcard to both his siblings- but never to his parents.

But no matter where he went, he never really felt settled. But once he was invited to go to LA, he felt the closest to home he had ever been. And joining the 118 he knew he had finally found the place where he belonged.

“That’s the kid?” Hen asked, “The one who keeps stealing the fire trucks?”

“If I had done that you would have sent me right back to hell,” Chimney joked.

“He’s just coming into his abilities and will need some guidance controlling his urges,” Bobby shrugged.

“So you fire him instead of telling him about his true nature?” Hen asked.

Hen and Chimney were two souls that had gone to hell too soon, so Bobby decided to give them a second chance on earth, but they were bound to him while they were there.

Hen stepped away from the scene to take a phone call and when she returned, she was fighting a smile, “Well, your boy is about to meet Athena, so good luck with that fall out.”

Buck was riding the high of saving the little girl when the officer he assisted walked over to him.

“Why are you in civics?” She asked.

It was the same officer from the baby in the pipe call from earlier that day and he hadn’t left a great impression.

“I was fired,” Buck explained, “But that was good for you because it meant I was available to help.”

“Well, I guess you aren’t as much of a dumbass as I thought you were. Still are one, just not as much.”

“I’ll take what I can get.”

She patted him on the shoulder and he barely noticed that one of her fingers was above his shirt collar- wouldn’t have noticed it at all if she hadn’t frozen.

“You- you’re-”

“Athena?” Buck asked, “What is it? Are you okay?”

She steeled her expression quickly, “Bobby Nash has a lot of explaining to do.”

He returned the truck to the station where Bobby told him he had his job back. But then Athena came marching in not too long afterwards.

“What the hell were you thinking?” Athena asked him, “Do you have any idea how dangerous this is?”

“I’m well aware,” Bobby said.

“How old is he?” Athena asked.

“Twenty-six.”

“Wait, are you two talking about me?” Buck asked.

“And he doesn’t know?” Athena asked, “He’s had his abilities for a year, and he doesn’t even know.”

“He’s not at full power yet,” Bobby tried to reason.

“Seven years,” Athena said, “He only has seven years to get it right or we’re all going to die!”

“He’ll get it right,” Bobby said.

“I’m holding you to that,” Athena said, “And you better hope that he’s able to stay hidden. You know what will happen if Heaven finds out.”

She stormed out just as fiercely as she stormed in.

“Um, what was she talking about?” Buck asked.

“Have you noticed anything change over the last year?” Bobby asked.

Buck tried to think back, but he was coming up empty. After the silence dragged on for too long, Bobby started throwing out suggestions.

“Increased libido? An ability to persuade people? Faster than normal healing? Maybe even some voices in your head? Have you moved any objects with your mind or wished for something and it was suddenly there?”

“Okay that is… specific,” Buck was very confused as to where all of this was headed, "Definitely the libido. Um, people have seemed to listen to me more? But I don’t know if that’s me being persuasive. And there haven’t really been voices, but my mind tends to wander and I’ll get these thoughts that don’t feel like my own?”

Bobby nodded, “Your progression is slow, but that’s probably because you didn’t know what was happening and haven’t worked to master any of it.”

“What’s going on, Bobby?” Buck asked.

“As soon as you know, it will make it easier for them to find you,” Bobby said, “The more you use your abilities the more detectable you are.”

“To who? Athena said something about Heaven?”

“There are some things you should know about me,” Bobby said, “The first is that I’m your father-”

“Philip Buckley is my father,” Buck said. Philip had loved him his entire life. Cared for him. Raised him right. If Buck were someone else’s son he would have acted just like Margaret did.

Unless she knew and never told him. Was that why she was so distant?

“Your mother made a deal in order to save Daniel.”

Buck hadn’t told anyone about his siblings. No names- no family history. He didn’t even put any of them down as his emergency contact.

“She made a deal with me- with the devil.”

“This is some elaborate prank, right?” Buck asked, “Haze the probie. Is that it?”

“This isn’t hazing,” Bobby said, “Margaret was desperate to save her boy and in exchange she agreed to bring my own into the world.”

“Why?” Buck asked, “Why does the devil need to have a kid? Also, you haven’t really shown me any proof that what you’re saying is real.”

Bobby disappeared and then Buck heard a voice behind him, “Is this real enough for you?”

He grabbed Buck’s shoulder and suddenly the firehouse was gone and they were in the middle of a dark palace.

“Welcome to Hell.”

“Hell?” Buck asked.

“What? Not enough fire and brimstone for you?” Bobby laughed, “Heaven tried fear tactics to keep the humans in line, but really Hell is just a kingdom on a different plane of existence. I have some demons who work for me, but mostly it’s populated by the souls sent here. It’s a mundane life for most, but for those who truly deserve it we do have the Fires of Hell or the rack… Some demons have more creative methods for the worst of the worst. And every century or so there are a few souls who I feel deserve a second chance. Right now Hen and Chimney are getting their second chance at life by serving me on Earth. They will help me keep you on the right path.”

Hell faded and they were standing in the firehouse again.

“And what’s the right path?” Buck asked, “What happens if I’m not on the right path in seven years?”

“When Jesus was thirty three he completed his mission by conquering death.”

“And what is it I need to conquer?” Buck asked.

“Love.”

Chapter 2

Notes:

This chapter is a season 2 rewrite. After this I'll probably fast forward and/or move to Tommy's POV and get his back story going.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Buck didn’t know what conquering love meant until he got a phone call. He had been the hook up guy- he had always been the hook up guy. But Abby was different.

She was so cool and kind and she saved his life! Loving her and supporting her was as natural as breathing. Which was why when he dropped her off at the airport he knew she was going to come back.

Life was good and he was not going to end up destroying the entire world. Win-win!

“That is a beautiful man,” Chimney said one morning.

“Where’s the lie?” Hen asked, “And I like girls.”

Buck glared at the guy in the locker room. Up until this point, they had been able to talk openingly about all their natures. But this guy wasn’t one of his dad’s demons or spirits. This was a regular human who had no idea what was going on.

Buck spent most of the shift just staring down the guy and trying to get him to leave, but it wasn’t working.

“What is your problem, man?” Eddie asked when they were all working out.

“You’re my problem!” Buck yelled, “You just walk in here like you belong.”

“Look, I know your girlfriend broke up with you and I’m sorry about that, but-”

“What? Who told you that?”

The station was starting to shake.

“Buck! Take a walk,” Bobby yelled from the loft.

Buck took a deep breath and went outside to take a few laps around the station.

“Was that an earthquake?” Eddie asked.

“No that was… something else,” Hen said, “Come on. Let me kick your ass in pinball.”

“Buck,” Bobby said when he joined Buck outside.

“I know, Bobby. I know,” Buck sighed.

“What’s going on with you?” Bobby asked, “You haven’t been acting like yourself.”

“She’s not coming back, is she?” Buck asked.

Bobby shook his head, “No. I don’t think she is.”

“I thought my mission was complete,” Buck said, “I thought in finding Abby I saved the world.”

“Love isn’t that easy, son.”

Bobby wrapped a comforting arm around him.

“And then Eddie comes in here and I can’t freely talk around him like I could before,” Buck continued, “The station isn’t a space for me to just be me anymore.”

“You think everyone working here is in the know?” Bobby asked with a laugh, “I use my abilities to make the humans think we’re having a completely different conversation when anything abnormal comes up. You’re safe around Eddie.”

People from B shift were starting to pull up.

“Go home a little early,” Bobby said, “Use your day off to get your head on straight, and then come back and make up with Eddie. You don’t have to be best friends or anything- but I can’t have that kind of tension on my team.”

“Thanks, Bobby. And I’m sorry for today.”

Buck went home and heard the shower running. Could it be they had all been wrong? Did Abby actually come back?

He pulled off his shirt and walked towards the bathroom. He was only distracted from his goal when he heard someone say, “Ew! I did not need to see my brother’s sex face!”

“Daniella?” Buck asked.

Since the time he had seen his sisters, Daniella had come out as trans and transitioned. She was the one he kept in touch with more as Maddie never replied to his post cards. But Daniella had a strong social media presence and would always initiate a conversation if Buck dropped off the map for too long.

“It’s Maddie in the shower, not whatever woman decorated this place,” Daniella said.

“Abby,” Buck said, “But she’s eat, pray, loving her way through Europe and I just came to terms with what that meant today.”

He joined his sister on the couch, but then what she said registered in his brain.

“Wait, Maddie’s in the shower?” Buck asked, “And Doug?”

“Doug is still in Boston as far as we know,” Daniella said, “She finally left him, but she won’t talk about any of it.”

Buck nodded, “As long as she’s safe.”

Maddie soon joined them and he had a fun night with the two of them. He changed the sheets on the bed and the two of them slept on the bed while Buck took the couch.

From there, Eddie and Buck actually became friends after taking a grenade out of a guy’s leg. And Buck got an apartment with his sisters and finally moved out of Abby’s place. It was time to move on.

Maddie got a job at dispatch and Daniella got a job as a trauma surgeon at a nearby hospital.

The one thing Buck wished he could change was being honest with his sisters. They didn’t know about his dad or his mission and he just wanted so badly to talk to them about it all.

But then Maddie was taken and the only thing on Buck’s mind was finding her. He and Daniella broke every rule to try and find her and thankfully Athena took them with her to go after Maddie and Doug.

They found her, but Doug looked like he was about to kill Maddie. Both of them were bloody and Doug was on top of her.

Buck saw red and he tackled Doug to the ground. He had Doug’s hands restrained in one hand and the other was on the man’s face. And then something happened that Buck had never seen before- Doug’s skin started to burn. He screamed as he disintegrated in Buck’s arms.

Daniella had caught up to him, “What the hell?”

Maddie was too out of it to realize what was happening.

Athena joined them and Buck gave her a panicked look, “We have to get out of here. They’ll know I’m here.”

“Who will know?” Daniella asked.

“Help me with Maddie,” Athena instructed Daniella. They got in the cruiser and Athena drove them to the hospital, “Get her inside.”

Daniella took Maddie and Athena turned to Buck, “I’m going to put a sigle on you that will help hide you, but each time you use your abilities it will weaken it. Once it’s gone, I will not be able to protect you again.”

Buck nodded and she took his arm and added it. It looked like any other tattoo, but he knew how powerful Athen was.

She wasn’t just any witch, but she was the first witch- Lilith was what she used to be known as, but she changed her name with the times. If anyone knew about hiding from heaven, it was Athena.

“Thank you,” Buck said.

“If you hadn’t done it, I would have done it myself,” Athena admitted, “Not get in there and check on your sister.”

Buck joined Daniella in the waiting room.

“What was that?” She asked.

Buck looked around, but with this being a rural hospital in the off season, there wasn’t anyone around. So he told her everything.

“You know you sound insane, right?” Daniella asked.

“But you saw it,” Buck said, “I wouldn’t have been able to do that if it wasn’t true.”

“Have you done anything like that before?”

“No. And I don’t want to do that ever again.”

Maddie was stable enough to be transported back to LA and she got a recovery room right next to Chimney. He hoped the two of them wouldn’t let this get in their way- they were good together.

Through all of this, he was also focused on his mission. A year had gone by and he wasn’t any closer to achieving it. Taylor was a bust even though they had great chemistry, so he decided to go with the safer option of Ali. She couldn’t leave him if traveling was part of her job anyway.

Months passed calmly and Buck, Maddie, and Daniella decided to find a new apartment- one not tainted by Doug. Ali was actually a good help with that.

And then packages with bombs were being sent around the city. And then Buck was under a fire engine.

He knew he could get himself out of it. He could heal his body with no problems. But that would burn through Athena’s sigle, heaven would find him, and he’d be dead anyway.

So he waited for the scene to be safe enough for the first responders to get to him. The hardest part was staying conscious enough not to use his abilities out of instinct.

Finally he was on his way to the hospital. And then he was able to go home. And then Ali left him. For the second time in a year, he had failed his mission and he was inching ever closer to destroying the world.

Chapter 3

Notes:

I ended up in a groove, so have a second chapter. Finally some Tommy!

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Humanity had always intrigued Tommy. He’d watched over them for a long time and had wanted to live amongst them. However, that was forbidden by his father ever since the nephilim came to be.

But Tommy had no interest in procreating with humans, so he disguised himself and started to really live for the first time. A man named Salvatore took him in and showed him what it meant to be human. And one night, they shared a kiss.

It had just been the one kiss, but Tommy’s brothers and sisters showed up and tore his wings from his body. He was no longer welcomed in heaven. He felt it like a gaping hole in his chest, but he didn’t think he would have chosen differently if he went back.

The only downside was that he still was not fully human. As a fallen angel, he did not age. Salvatore grew old and died, but Tommy was still there.

He saw humanity shift and change and grow- sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse. And Tommy was there for all of it- right in the heart of the pain trying to heal it.

He learned how to fly human contraptions as soon as they were invented just to regain that feeling. It wasn’t the same, but Tommy felt the most himself when he was in the air.

He had been working for LAFD Air Ops for about two years when he felt a shift. Something very powerful was in the world and Tommy’s instincts were telling him to find the being. But he had no idea if it was someone friendly or not. Maybe it was the other angels trying to lure him out to torture him some more.

No. He wouldn’t go looking for whatever caused his heart to race and filled his veins with adrenalin. He would stay in his little life he had made for himself there.

There was a tsunami and as he was flying- looking for survivors- he saw and felt a flash of something, but it was gone just as quickly. As if the person sending the magical flair had done it by instinct. It made Tommy wonder under what circumstances someone stuck in a tsunami would prioritize hiding their abilities.

There were a couple other times he felt it that day. It felt as if the person was looking for something- or someone. Only daring to use their powers to try and help others, and only briefly. It intrigued him and he wondered who was on the other side of that beacon.

He did multiple trips to various hospitals that day, but one of his favorites to drop off with was always Doctor Buckley at Cedars. She was a badass and after a few meetings over the years when handing off patients, he invited her to kareoke trivia.

“You’re not my type,” She said.

“You aren’t mine, either,” Tommy had responded, “But it’s at a great gay bar and we could be each other’s wingmen.”

It was the first time he really made a friend in the community. Of course there was Hen, but he hadn’t come out to her when they worked together- something that quietly haunted him to this day. Having Daniella at his side at the bar always made him feel more comfortable.

However, the tsunami was not a day for any socializing between the two- just a quick nod, reciting the medical knowledge they had about the patient, and then back to the sky while they get the patient into treatment.

After that, life passes pretty much the same for a few years. He has some short term boyfriends thanks to Daniella’s wingman skills, but ultimately none of them work out. They all say he’s holding something back, and that’s true. How can he tell anyone about his past? How can he go through what he did with Salvatore again?

Lucy became his partner at work and as soon as he meets her, he knew she would be perfect for Daniella. He invited Lucy to karaoke trivia and sees the two women hit it off. He called it an early night and let the two just enjoy the time together.

And then Lucy was out of town visiting family when he got a call from an old friend.

Chimney showed up at harbor with two men he’d never met before, but one of them looked somewhat familiar.

“This is Eddie,” Chimney introduced the unfamiliar man. Tommy shook Eddie’s hand, “And this is-”

“Evan,” The familiar man said, taking Tommy’s hand, “I’m Evan.”

And Tommy’s world turned upsidedown. There was something powerful and alluring in Evan’s eyes and his touch. Tommy didn’t want to part with him, but they had to if they were going to save Bobby and Athena.

He knew who Bobby and Athena were- he knew as soon as he met them. But they kind of had a shared history. They were all rejected by heaven for one reason for another. And while Tommy hadn’t really gotten close to them, he didn’t want them to die, either.

Although, he was pretty certain the two of them could get out of whatever scrape they were in. But if it was a cruise ship in danger, that meant hundreds of people who needed help. So he’d listen to his former co-workers and fly into a freaking hurricane to get the truth.

Surprisingly, the rescue mission was a success and seeing Bobby and Athena reunite made something in his heart ache. He wanted that- someone he could be fully honest with- someone he wouldn’t have to worry about losing just as soon as they found each other.

And then Evan was touching him again and Tommy didn’t want to let go. But Evan went to join the rest of his team and Tommy was left admiring him from a distance- he was always kept at a distance.

However, after that day he spent more time with Chimney and Eddie. It was nice widening his social circle.

He got coffee with Hen and came out to her and she was just as supportive as he knew she would be. And he found out why Evan seemed so familiar.

“You flew my brother into a hurricane?” Daniella asked as she stormed into his house one day.

“Hello to you, too.”

“Why did you do that?” She yelled.

“Chimney asked me to,” He said as if that were the logical answer.

Daniella rolled her eyes, “You know- ever since that day, Buck hasn’t been able to stop talking about you.”

“Buck?” Tommy asked.

“My brother?”

“He introduced himself as Evan.”

“He-” Daniella paused as she processed that, “He never does that.”

Tommy shrugged. He wasn’t sure what she wanted from this interaction. He could see the cogs turning in her brain.

“I’m bringing him to karaoke trivia,” She finally concluded, “He knows a lot about random things and I think he could help. I also think his version of Eye of the Tiger could get us bonus points if Alfonso is hosting.”

Now he was curious about what that rendition would look like. Alfonso usually gave bonus points if the guy was hot and did a little strip tease.

Daniella clocked his response, “Yeah… I’ll see you on Thursday!”

Tommy found himself anxiously awaiting Thursday. He had invited Eddie to come as well because he wanted a buffer to whatever Daniella was planning. He could see himself falling hard and fast for Evan and he didn’t want the pain that would come from that.

The three of them were ther when Tommy walked in. Eddie was sitting in a booth next to Daniella and Evan was sitting across from them, glaring at Eddie. Which was strange because he thought they were good friends.

“Hey, you guys ready to win?” Tommy asked.

Evan turned to him and his face shifted to a big grin, “Tonight’s going to be great.”

Eddie wasn’t really much help, but Daniella was right that Evan was the secret sauce for their team to win. And the shirtless push ups in the middle of Eye of the Tiger were enlightening.

At the end of the night, Daniella put on an overly concerned look, “Buck, I don’t think you should be driving.”

“I had two beers,” Buck said.

“No, you shouldn’t drive and you have an early morning,” she insisted, “Tommy, could you give Buck a ride home?”

“Don’t you two live together?” Tommy asked.

He remembered her saying she lived with her siblings before and mentioning when her sister moved out, but as far as he knew Daniella and Evan were still roommates.

“I’m spending the night with Lucy,” she said, “And Eddie lives on the other side of town. So could you help out?”

“I guess?” Tommy agreed. But he also thought Evan was good to drive himself. But he figured Daniella knew him better and he wouldn’t want to misjudge the situation and send someone impaired on the road. He’d been to too many drunk driver calls to let that happen.

Evan rolled his eyes, but didn’t put up any arguments. The drive started off in silence with just the radio keeping them company.

“I’m sorry my sister’s being so weird,” Evan said, “I don’t know what’s gotten into her lately.”

“I’m used to her antics by now,” Tommy said, “She normally only gets this pushy when she’s trying to wingman for me.”

But that couldn’t be what was happening here, right?

“Oh?” Evan asked. And it was dark, but he could swear there was a tinge of pink on Evan’s cheeks.

“Yeah,” they pulled up in front of Evan’s building. And then Tommy decided to take a chance and he kissed him.

It was a quick, soft peck. But when he pulled away he saw Evan staring at him with an awed expression.

“Was that okay?”

“It was better than fake mouth static,” Evan laughed.

God. Evan was going to ruin him all over again. But in that moment, he couldn’t bring himself to care- he just wanted to be with Evan as long as he could have him.

Ah! What's going to happen when they find out about what the other is?

I didn't think it would be over so soon, but I already started working on the next chapter and it is clearly the last. I hope y'all enjoy!

Chapter Text

The only time Buck used his powers after killing Doug was trying to find Chris during the tsunami. It wasn’t even on purpose, but just instinct reaching out for the boy.

“The sigal is fading,” Athena said when she checked him over afterwards, “They probably can tell what region of the world you’re in at the very least.”

“I’m trying to be more careful,” Buck assured her, “But it was Christopher .”

“I know,” Athena said, “That’s love.”

Buck thought about it. He had familial love with Maddie, Daniella, and Bobby. He had the love of friendship from Hen, Chimney, Athena, Eddie, and Christopher. The only thing he didn’t have and understand was romantic love. With Ali leaving he was even more lost.

Maddie was pregnant and Philip and Margaret came to visit. They saw Bobby and everything went to… well… hell. Margaret left and vowed to never return. Philip didn’t know what to do with the fact that the man he thought was his son actually belonged to the devil himself. If it wasn’t for his friends and family in LA, he probably would have destroyed the world after that encounter.

Buck doubled his efforts to conquer love after that. He tried to study it, but came up at a loss. He tried with Taylor again, but that got him nowhere but back in his sister’s apartment.

With a little over a year left to go, he decided to try and help his friends realize paternal and maternal love. If he couldn’t have that himself, maybe conquering love meant stepping back and letting others have it.

Connor and Kameron just found out they were having a boy.

Philip and Margaret who were visiting Jee found out and they started freaking out again.

Buck was struck by lightning.

He had a weird dream while he was in the coma and he was still trying to make sense of all of it. But more importantly, when he woke up he found out Kameron had a miscarriage.

“We’re lucky that’s all heaven did,” Bobby said as he was playing cards with Buck in the hospital, “A continued line from the anti-christ has never happened before. You could have been struck dead for doing that.”

“I almost was,” Buck pointed out, “Heaven found me and tried to kill me.”

Bobby nodded. It was clear he wanted to say more- remind Buck of the deadline as if it wasn’t haunting his every waking and sleeping moment. But thankfully he kept silent and they continued to play their game.

Flying into a hurricane when God wanted you dead probably wasn’t the best idea, but Buck couldn’t leave his father and pseudo mother out there to die. And if it meant watching the super competent pilot fly then so be it.

Afterwards he couldn’t shut up about Tommy. There was just something about him.

And it turned out Daniella had known him for years and never introduced them. How could he have one friend, one almost brother-in-law, and one sister, all knowing the same cool guy and none of them thinking Buck may want to get to know that guy.

Which was why it had been such a surprise when Daniella invited him to trivia.

It was a weird karaoke thing, but he didn’t mind. He could feel Tommy’s eyes on him when it was his turn to sing. And if that made him perform even harder… well that was his own little secret.

Buck hadn’t expected the kiss in the car, but he wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Their relationship was so fun, sexy, and romantic. It was more than he could have dreamed of. He stopped worrying about the deadline because it didn’t matter anymore- he had conquered love with Tommy Kinard.

“Move in with me,” Buck found himself asking one night.

The smile left Tommy’s face and he started fidgeting, “I’m your first, not your last.”

And what did that even mean?

More words were said, but Buck wasn’t processing them. And then Tommy was gone, leaving a big black hole where he used to be.

Three months. That was how much time was left before Buck’s thirty-third birthday. And at any point during that year the world could end.

He hadn’t conquered love- he couldn’t even really understand it. And if he couldn’t have it with Tommy of all people, then it wasn’t possible.

Buck kept looking at his phone waiting for a call or text- wanting to be the one to reach out.

“He’s too good for me,” Buck eventually sighed, “He’s just so cool and confident and… and…”

He couldn’t quite finish the word he wanted, so Chimney stepped in, “Angelic?”

“Yeah!” Buck exclaimed, because that encompassed everything he had ever thought about Tommy, “Wait, what?”

“You mean you didn’t know?” Hen asked, “Tommy is a fallen angel.”

“What?” Buck asked.

“Bobby knows the full story, but since we’re technically spirits we could sense it right away,” Hen explained.

“He’s an angel,” Buck said, “Do you think he learned what I am and that’s why he broke up with me? How is the anti-christ ever supposed to get an angel to fall in love with him?”

Fallen angel,” Chimney unhelpfully pointed out.

The sirens rang and they loaded up in the engine. Ironically they were called out to a church. Buck climbed up a ladder to try and help a woman who- in her confusion- climbed on top of a cross and couldn’t get down.

“Get behind me Satan!” She yelled at Buck.

Buck sighed and got on the radio. Bobby needed to hear this, “Cap. She thinks I’m Satan.”

“Well, tell her you’re not,” Bobby was trying not to laugh.

“Ma’am, I’m not Satan,” Buck tried to reassure her, but it didn’t work.

Eventually they got her down and they all had a good laugh about it afterwards.

“Trying to come for my throne?” Bobby asked.

“Nah, you can have Hell,” Buck said, “I’m still trying to keep Earth in one piece.”

After that shift, Buck thought about going home, but somehow he ended up at Tommy’s house instead. He sat in his jeep in front of the house until the porchlight came on and his phone buzzed.

“You can come in, you know.”

Always with the perfect punctuation and sentence structure. He didn’t know if it was a generational thing, or just who Tommy was.

Buck took a deep breath and left the safety of his jeep.

“Hi.”

“Hi.”

Tommy let Buck inside and he stood awkwardly in the entryway. He wasn’t sure what to do or really why he was there.

“Did you know?” Buck asked.

“Know what?”

“Is it why you left?” Buck continued, “Am I really that unlovable?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Baby.”

The term of endearment made his swirling thoughts stop, “Why did you call me that?”

“Call you what?”

“You called me Baby.”

Tommy just shrugged noncommittally.

“And what if… What if I called you Angel?”

Tommy’s eyes shot up to his in horror, “Don’t-”

“But it’s true- you’re an angel,” Buck insisted.

Was ! And how did you even know that?”

“I know that because I’m something that could never live up to how amazing you are.”

“I’m not amazing,” Tommy started pulling off his shirt.

It was then that Buck realized he had never really seen the man’s back before. There were what looked like tattoos of broken wings covering his entire back.

“These tattoos are a manifestation of my true form,” Tommy continued, “I was punished and shunned from heaven. I am no angel.”

Buck reverently touched the wings, “You are to me.”

And then Buck could feel the power flowing out of him again without his consent. There was a flash of light. And then everything went black.

Chapter Text

Tommy wasn’t sure what had just happened. Evan had revealed he knew Tommy used to be an angel, but didn’t seem to know that was in the past. He had been touching the remains of Tommy’s wings when there was a flash of light and his muscles started to ache. And then he was surrounded by jet black feathers.

Tommy’s wings used to be pure white like all of his brother’s and sister’s were. But these new wings looked even more magnificent. Not that Tommy had that much time to admire them as Evan started falling to the ground, unconscious.

Tommy caught him and carried him to the couch, his wings acting as a blanket to keep the young man warm and comfortable.

Evan woke up and smiled when he saw Tommy. Then he noticed the wings and his eyes grew wide, “Did I do that?”

“I’m not sure how, but I think so.”

Evan looked at his arm in a panic and that was when Tommy noticed a tattoo was missing.

“They can find me,” Evan said, “Shit!”

“Who can find you?”

“Heaven. They’re going to find me and kill me.”

“I won’t let that happen,” He had no idea why his family would be after Evan, but he wouldn’t let them put a single hand on the man he loved. They could rip out his wings again for all he cared, but they were not getting Evan.

“But I failed,” Evan wasn’t making any sense, “They have to intervene!”

“What are you talking about?”

Evan kept babbling about nonsense Tommy couldn’t make sense of, so he did the only thing he could think of. He kissed Evan and it made him stop talking. And when Tommy pulled away, he could tell Evan was finally stopping to think before speaking.

“You kissed me.”

“Yes.”

“But I thought you hated me.”

Tommy was confused all over again, “How could I ever hate you?”

“Because I’m going to destroy the world.”

“What?” Tommy couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Evan was the kindest, gentlest soul he had ever met.

“I’m the anti-christ.”

It took a minute, but then it clicked along with the long forgotten memories of prophecies from his father, “I don’t think you have to worry about that.”

“Why not?” Evan asked, “My birthday is two days away. I failed my mission.”

Tommy shook his head, “No. You didn’t.”

Tommy shook his new wings to draw Evan’s attention to them.

“Where did those come from?” Evan asked.

“You made them with your love,” Tommy said, “You are fueled by your love for others. You came after me because you loved me. You gave me my wings back just to prove it- and you weren’t even trying. You have conquered love because you are love.”

He could see the gears turning in Evan’s head as he likely was reevaluating his entire life.

“Oh,” was what he finally said.

“Yeah, oh.”

And then Tommy was kissing him again.

They had a lot to talk about and work through- mostly their communication skills- but Tommy had never been so certain about anything before that Evan Buckley was the greatest thing to happen to the planet and to him.

A few weeks later, Evan came home with a confused look on his face.

“What’s wrong?” Tommy asked.

“I met God today.”

Now Tommy was panicking. He knew God and the anti-christ weren’t supposed to get along. He’d struck Tommy’s boyfriend with lightning for trying to help out some friends! What happened and how was Even still alive?

“He was the pizza man.”

Now Tommy’s panic was lessening, but the confusion was setting in, “I’m sorry, what?”

“Yeah. He was a pizza man who wasn’t supposed to be driving,” Evan said, “Anyway, he apologized for the lighting but thanked me for getting your wings back.”

“God is on Earth?” Tommy finally asked.

“Yeah. He wanted to see what it was like,” Evan said, “Suffice it to say it is not really working out well for him. Which is why he admires you so much.”

“God… admires me.”

“Yeah. You’ve had a hard life, but made it work,” Evan continued, “You made Earth your home and have thrived here while all he could amount to was a sucky pizza man. He said he might try his hand at being an author next.”

“God wants to write a book.”

“More like a series,” Buck shrugged, “He tried to get into the plot with me, but then his car fell on Athena’s cruiser. She was not happy.”

Tommy wondered how an encounter between God and Lilith would go after all these millenia- especially if Evan’s version of events leading up to their reunion was to be believed. It was a miracle that didn’t bring about the apocalypse.

“So he didn’t smite you or say you were going to doom us all?” Tommy asked, wanting to be sure everything was truly alright.

“No smiting, no doom and gloom,” Evan assured him, “He was even chill with Bobby.”

Oh god, Tommy hadn’t even thought about that part of things.

“But I think we’re all okay,” Evan smiled and got cozy cuddled up to Tommy on the couch with one of Tommy’s wings wrapped around him.

Evan’s thirty-fourth birthday came and went with a huge celebration- proof that he had conquered love. But Tommy hadn’t doubted that for a second since Evan gave him new wings.

He knew Evan thought of his powers as dark, but Tommy knew differently. The beacon he had seen and felt from the man before even meeting him was nothing but light. It was the embodiment of hope and love and Tommy considered himself lucky to have been chosen by such a man.

The years passed and this time, his partner was not growing old. This time, his love was able to spend eternity with him without ever having to say goodbye.

Notes:

I couldn't resist using Chuck as God. He's just *right there*!

Comments and kudos please!

Also to clarify, Eddie never learns the truth. He's just out here hanging out with Satan and the anti-christ and is none the wiser.

Comments and kudos please! Can't wait to write and share more of this fic. Maybe I'll actually introduce Tommy soon :p
