Notes:

Hello everyone! This is my first ever RWBY story and I'm all in for it! The characters, the emotional stages, the action, so much of what this fantastically strange yet strong world has brought and I've never been more attached to a show like this in a while!

So enjoy this pilot chapter of a story you may or may not have known of but with a few eyes that weren't seen before.

Also check out the show if you haven't seen it yet. You'll probably fall for it as I did.

Chapter 1: Volume 1, Episode 1: First Trials

Summary:

A young dreamer leads a small team of misfits as they train and rise to become something more than students.

Chapter Text

"Let me tell you a story. A story so inspiring and unexpected that no one had ever seen before in the ancient times. One of a power that shaped and forged the world of wonder, magic, and knowledge. A world called... Remnant."

The sun rises over a mountain formation and shines down on a valley. Birds fly over in the clouds, grass brushing from the winds, and trees shining from the rays of light

Beyond the valley, two unknown beings appear from the horizon, walking together

"Once there were two brothers, one who was born of light and the youngest being born of darkness. They have traveled from an unknown world to create anything that they choose to wish."

A man with a yellow glow touches the ground and trees slowly grow and vines and flowers soon join

The oldest chose to create life, where nature and living beings can prosper without hesitation. Where they can never filled out or control linger in their mind."

Another man with a dark blue body is shown and swipes his hand to see the plants die out

"But the young brother chose to oppose the elder by destroying anything that life touches. To decimate, to kill."

The brothers suddenly argue, no sound was heard

"Feeling tired of what the god of light was conflicting, the god of darkness created something that was more than malicious. Beings that were made of no souls. Creatures called... The Grimm."

Multiple variations of the Grimm suddenly attack without hesitation

"The action of the youngest made the oldest consider ending the feud with a creation that they both wish to leave behind. A masterpiece that was nothing unlike anything they've made before. They created humanity. Living souls that choose for themselves and actions that are their own."

What started from one human turned into dozens then turned hundreds and ever growing until the world became sentient with life. Grimm suddenly are shown charging and killing anything that lived until a few welded weapons and clashed with the beasts

"Sensing and considering action to face the grimm, humanity came together to become warriors of remnant, huntsmen and huntresses. Using scientific magics and auras from their birth, these warriors had been trained and sent to fight whatever darkness the Grimm gave and to keep the peace rested."

A glowing light shows and four orbs appear

"In that time however, 4 mysterious relics were born with the power of destruction, creation, knowledge, and choice. The huntsmen and huntresses of the past had a worried sense that these relics, if fallen into the wrong hands, would cause destruction and despair upon our world. Their choice was to separate these artifacts and the power of it's guardians, the maidens of Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter, to safeguard until the time comes for their use. This story may have a short but better ending to some people, it's history is indeed inspiring."

A book then closes and the story ends there as we then slowly appear in a small bedroom with wooden pillars and wallpapers filled with heroes of multiple types, one with a longsword and others with plasma based rifles. A desk sat on the right side of the room with tools and small vials of dust sitting in the table corner. On the wall of the desk were blueprints of a pair of boots with the layout of the same dust being stored and used near the heels.

The bedroom door opens for a young male figure wearing a black shirt with blue striping on the sleeves, grey long johns with a logo for Signal Academy, and a pair of light white sneakers with decorated lightning bolts on the front. His hair was a medium brown as it shown on the morning sun while his tanned skin felt it's warmth. He sets a box full of miscellaneous scrap he found on his bed and looks up with a smile on his face. He looks out the window to enjoy his ordinary sight of the field next to his family farmhouse in the outskirts of Patch. From when he was first born, he never truly heard about the stories of the warriors until he found himself being trained in the school he went to that showed him the ropes. From auras that generate as a life force for the being to having a semblance that gives you your boost in combat. He still struggles in trying to find his semblance since he never did have the proper elder figure or anyone like him that has the same problem. But what he lacks in that was made up by the boots he was constructing since he was 10. He calls the pair "Sacred Warmth", the first hand made footwear that uses the power of dust for travel or combat. The first time he had the idea on making them was from his mother who passed away from an unknown event when he was around 3 years old. They were walking down the shopping district in Patch until he saw a rare edition of shoes that looked like they could fly in a window sill at a market.

The boy since had an idea of weaponizing them and using them for effective ways and after many failed errors like almost setting the house on fire to freezing the stables by an ice blast from the heel, he was ready to test them again for an important task: Hoeing the field and planting the seeds to grow the crops. He slipped the boots on his feet and tightened the belt to a comfortable latch and he walked downstairs to meet with his uncle and father. His father was Burrow Scab, a team leader with his mother and uncle Adrian when they were his age but when it came the time to hang the coat, he found a new chapter by raising and supporting his enthusiastic son who had a concerned yet sympathetic look of curiosity.

Burrow: "I see you've slipped on your boots once again."

Merlin: "Yep! And I'm sure that I have 100% got down the errors. So that means I have no doubt they will be able to work this time."

Adrian: "You sure? The last time you used them, we had to call ourselves the emergency department just to put out that fire."

Merlin: "Uhhh yea... But at least it didn't burn down the forest that's for sure."

Burrow: "Just in case, you have your protective gear?"

Merlin: (Holds out and puts on his helmet, knee pads, and elbow pads) "Check."

Burrow: "Good. You know on how you're gonna test them?"

Merlin: "By carefully digging and planting the crops. Hopefully without any setbacks to cause catastrophe."

Burrow: "Alright. And if you can't control the heels in case of emergency-"

Merlin: "You and Uncle Adrian have the fire extinguishers or even just any emergency tools to make sure they're put out. And a pad to help stop myself and comfortably land on."

Burrow: (Huffs a chuckle and smiles) "Go."

Merlin: (Gives his dad a reassuring smile and heads outside from the front door, leaving the two adults alone in the kitchen)

Adrian: (Speaks to Burrow) "You sure he'll be okay? I don't want to see him feel like he failed all over again just because of those boots giving him a hard time."

Burrow: "I have hopes that he'll do just fine. He reminds me too much of Ariana in a way."

Adrian: (He slowly grows a frown of sadness and speaks) "What do you think he'll think about if he finds out about her passing?"

Burrow: (Closes his eyes and sighs) "To be honest, I'm not sure. I don't think he'll feel too much emotion since he lost her at such a young age. But at the same time I believe he'll want answers on who was responsible for it happening. I'm not worried about him taking care of things in the future, I'm more concerned about where his emotions will lead him. His mother talked so much about him wishing he could be as strong as the huntsmen and it sometimes feels like I failed to not try to give that same supportive enthusiasm that she once gave him. It makes me question that if I'm truly being a good father or not."

Adrian: "I think you'reg not giving enough credit to yourself. A bunch of people will agree with you and saying that being a parent is not often easy and it's hard trying to give your child the best thing they have. The best thing we can do however is making sure that whatever decision he has, especially in his age, we have to support and understand that decision the best way we can. We can't change him from the choices he'll make but we can have ourselves to at least give our sympathies. Cuz if we don't, what does that make us?"

Burrow: "You sure have questions that sound like they make sense."

Adrian: "That's because it is in some sort of manner."

Burrow: "At least it puts me at ease in knowing that Cal will have his back in case we're not there."

Adrian: "Speaking of which, do you think he knows about Merlin and his test today?"

Burrow: "If not and he's going to be in for a treat."

Outside, Merlin tries to adjust his boots and readies for the work while sitting on a hay roll lies his old friend, Cal Librien. The two met when Merlin was around 10 years old and since their combined training at the same school, they've grown to be best friends and even helped one another on achieving their skills. Cal's weapon of choice was a cutlass and a shield that when fused becomes a large bladed battle axe. His semblance allows him to phase into matter without being spotted, like a ghost making silence. He was on his way to visit his friend until when he saw the boots, it was a sight that he couldn't avoid.

Cal: "Remind me again why this is a good idea?"

Merlin: "Because not only does this help me get my job done faster but it also is a great way for me to use the test run. Think of it as killing two grimm with one stone."

Cal: "First of all, it's two birds and one stone. And secondly, there were many times where those boots would sometimes flicker off and you'd get the dirt on your rump or when one of the vials pops out and creates a small explosion. Took me days to clean out fire ash over my armor."

Merlin: "Sorry about that by the way and I promise you that I fixed the bugs in the tech which means that there shouldn't be any other faulty errors. Now, hand me the hoe please."

Cal: (Hands Merlin the hoe tool and sits back on the hay)

Merlin stands in front of the crop field and readies himself to focus and channels his aura just in case. He takes a slow breath in and out as he clicks the heels on and shoots himself forward with gravity dust and he claws the hoe on the ground to dig the divots in a straight line and he aims the boots the other way to slow down and lands safely on the ground. His astonishment and glee soon spike as the first part of the test ran perfectly as he predicted and sees that Cal also had the same expression (His father seeing from inside and calls his brother to see). He repeated the same trick on the other side and managed to give the same results. His optimism grows more with every positive effect and it gives him the confidence to try and use these skills in public (Without any reprimand to hear hopefully).

Merlin: "They work... They work! I can't believe it!"

Cal: "That has to be pure luck! Every time you and I worked on these things it often ended up with making such a mess."

Merlin: "I don't take that to heart because it's true but I still can't believe that they finally work! Almost 3 years of working on these things had brought me to this moment." (He then makes a heroic stance) "From this day forth, I Merlin Scab, shall use these handmade powers for the greater good! I will become one of the greatest huntsman that Remnant has ever seen and it will be glorious."

Cal: (Gives an unamused look) "Says the guy who landed face first into a bystander's pie in the festival last year."

Merlin: "Hey! ... That was an accident."

Cal: "It's still true though."

Merlin: "You're not fun sometimes y'know that?" (Sees Cal stick out his tongue jokingly) "But still. I want to fulfill my dreams on joining the greatest. It's... honestly want my mom would want for me."

Cal: (Senses his friend's dejection and walks over to comfort him) "You and I go way back. I remember the first day we met when you and the rest of us were having recess. I was practicing on trying to grab pine cones from atop the trees and then later I saw you sitting on the bench by yourself."

Merlin: "I remember. You came over to make sure that I was okay and wanted to share a pinecone with me. Although I never understood why you sometimes used to eat them."

Cal: (Laughs awkwardly about that fact but brushes it off to speak) "I also wanted you to not feel alone. No matter what happened. And since then, we've become good friends and practicing on unlocking our semblances. I know you're still trying to find yours."

Merlin: "I'm sure I'll find it. Eventually."

Cal: "At least you've got Sacred Warmth to work. That's something I think is an achievement. All you have to do now is make sure you find a way to continue practicing unlocking your semblance."

Merlin gives a comforted smile to realize Librien was right and that he shouldn't let one small problem get in the way. Feeling satisfied on the test, he and Cal continue to plant the seeds to grow the crops. They managed to fill most of the holes until Merlin heard a snap in the distance and looks into the forest for whatever made the sound but couldn't see to find anything even with the small rays from the leaves shining through. The first thing that came to his mind was a herd of Beowolf Grimm stalking the woods on occasions or it could be just a deer that got spooked by the snapping and ran off. Whatever it was, it had vanished and Merlin resumed his post and planted the last of the seed pouch. He and Cal grabbed the tools and were proceeding to return to their homes until there was brushing from behind and looks to see what it was that made his eyes grow wide with shock. His father and uncle see the boys standing on the field and wonder what the commotion was until they see the boys slowly back up and the adults get a good view on the sight being a few Ursa Grimm approaching. Sensing the danger, Burrow and Adrian rush out of the kitchen to acquire their weapons (Burrow's Bow/Bladed Staff Nunchaku and Adrian's Duel Pistols) and run outside to help the boy's escape.

Burrow: "Merlin, Cal, run!"

The two hear his command and rush past them to enter the house while the brothers handled the creatures. One of the ursas tries to right swipe at Adrian but he dodges to the left and fires a few rounds on it's hide and it stumbles down. Burrow jumps atop of one and wraps the bow around it's neck to try and choke it but instead switches to his secondary and cleaves the head right of the neck. Another Ursai was charging at him and he managed to move just in time before the beast crashed into a tree. The brothers saw that there was a couple more Ursa coming and held their ground against them. One Ursa tried to swipe at Burrow but he jumped onto it's arm and fires arrows into it's hide until another slammed him into the ground and grunts on impact, causing his aura to flicker. Adrian sees this and fires rounds on the beast to give his brother a catch of breath. After a few moments, Burrow stands back up but his arm started to ache from the hit. It caused him to be slow on his draw and his melee which gave the grimm an opportunity. Merlin and Cal witness the events unfold from inside the house and the first thought that ran in his mind was how both his father and uncle would perish in the hands of darkness and there was nothing he could prevent. Merlin closes his eyes and pictures the memories of his life in the past including one with his mother where she and the boys sat up on top of the farmhouse roof and enjoyed the warmth of the summer and the wind that brushed in the trees and grass. He remembers the stories that his parents used to tell him of how they were a huntsmen and huntress from Beacon and how they first met. He then remembered about when he first found the idea of the boots and drew a picture of what he wanted, his mom saw the spark in his eyes and said these words to him:

"I think they'll look great on you. Maybe in the future, you and I can work on them together. So you can take them and show everyone what Merlin Scab can do. Because a huntress or huntsmen never gives up. No matter what people will judge or say about the things they see. And I believe we can make it happen."

Merlin opens to reveal the fire in his eyes as he looks up and sees his father holding his ground. He pulls out a dust vial and clicks his boots on.

Merlin: "Not this time." (He rushes outside despite hearing Cal telling him to come back)

Burrow and Adrian were almost surrounded by the bear grimm, trying to reluctantly hold their form and their aura almost depleted from the force they've felt. Burrow thinks to himself on how he was glad to know that he made his last stand to protect his son and will hopefully find themselves a better side to be on when it was over. Before one of the Ursai could strike, a scream was heard and a high ringed hit was made and he looks to see his son planting his foot on the side of the creature's head, amazed yet shocked that he decided to go against his word and left the house. He was about to scold him until Merlin held his hand out and turned.

Merlin: "I know you want to make sure that I'm okay and that you didn't want me to have any problems but how can I know what to do if I don't find out about what problems I'm going against. I made these boots as a way to find those answers on my own and I hope and forgive the fact that you may or may not understand. I have questions and I want to find the answers."

Burrow: "...I know you do. Which is why I'm not holding back anymore. You've more than proof that you can try and use those boots to achieve something great. Your mom saw that, you saw that, and now I'm willing to see it too." (He smiles genuinely and sees his son give the same energy) "Now, character show your old man and what those boots are made of?"

Merlin: "With pleasure. Cal?"

The same beast stood up and yet despite that it's arm was just sliced off by an axe that landed on the ground. Cal charges and slides underneath to retrieve his axe and it returns to it's shield/sword configuration as he bashed against it's head. The four boys then hold their position as they see four more Ursai approaching yet they didn't care as Merlin gave an amusing smile. They begin their attacks and drive their attention on how to keep them from striking.

Adrian: "Pop quiz: what do you boys know about Ursa Grimm?"

Merlin: "They are a large type of grim that are slow in combat but their strength out measures most. Their hides are almost non-impenetrable except by a high measure of sharp weaponry."

Cal: "Like my axe and your dad's arrows?"

Merlin: "Precisely. Or if we wanna try the hard way, we can use the Ursa's strength against them."

Burrow: "And since none of us possess the means to make that happen, the first option will remain as our required."

Merlin: "And I think I know how we can do that. Me and Uncle Adrian will try to draw their attention on us, giving you and Kyle a chance to try and finish them off. It's a risky chance but one that we may have to consider at this time."

Adrian: "I hate to agree on the subject but Merlin's right. My rounds weren't strong enough to penetrate it's hide. We may need to give you guys some room to slice and dice."

Burrow: "Alright. But make sure you steer away from the claws. They're not only powerful but they're also very sharp. Be careful."

Merlin: "With only the 4 of us against two of them? We've got nothing to worry about." (He jokes until he sees his father's concern and lays it down) "But I'll make sure I'll be safe."

Burrow nods his head and let's his son and brother do whatever first comes to mind to try and draw the Ursai from them. Merlin used Sacred Warmth to blast a fleet of ice into a small spot and crashes down with fire to create a blinding smokescreen trick. The Ursai try to locate their prey but couldn't see through the mist until a blade is felt impaling it's back and it lays down motionless. The sword was shown to be Burrow using one end of his bow-chaku to strike the beast down and keep it paralyzed. Cal takes his sword and swiftly thrusts his sword through the Ursa's skull, ending the first of the last. The last Ursa had managed to find it's way through the mist and tries to swipe at Burrow but Merlin had a trick up his sleeve he never tried before.

Merlin: "Dad, as soon as it opens it's mouth, shoot an arrow between the teeth!"

Burrow: "What?!"

Merlin: "Trust me!"

Burrow: (Takes a few seconds to acknowledge his request and waits for an opening)

Merlin charges at the Grimm and sees that it was about to slam him with both paws but he aimed it's arms in different directions, giving his dad the opening to shoot one of the arrows. With the arrow trapping it's jaws tight, the Ursa was completely vulnerable for Merlin to slide a vial of dust from his boots and toss it into the creature's mouth, swallowing it.

Merlin: "We might wanna take a few steps back."

The Grimm had no mercy as the vial cracked open and the results were that it's entire body was encased and deceased in a cocoon of ice and shadow. Everyone draws their weapons in and takes a moment to relax. Merlin certainly needed it since this was technically his first Grimm battle and one that he and the family won.

Merlin: "Man. Talk about heavy stuff. Is this what happens occasionally or daily for a huntsman or huntress?"

Burrow: "Yes and it's required for everyone else. That's why they have these schools to train with."

Merlin: "I know dad. I was joking."

Burrow: "Oh! Sorry I misunderstood didn't I?"

Merlin: "Yep. Hahahaha!"

His father then joins in the laughing party, one that they needed after some time. They've been handling things on their ends and haven't known of each other in the emotional stage more than Merlin and his mom. Burrow would be one of the people to talk with whenever there's something going in their mind but never to the point on how it would effect them. Adrian looks over to see the two finally being open with one another and it's a task that he no longer has to worry about.

**Later that evening**

The boys were finished in having dinner and we're only just sitting at the table just to talk and enjoy their company. They've often been having their own normal nights where they would enjoy food and discuss certain topics and afterwards, they would go their separate ways and enjoy the rest of the night. Tonight however was different as it felt like the air that was heavy and difficult to breathe had became more clean and easier.

Burrow: "And that's how your uncle got his feet caught by one of my arrows on training. It was the most funniest thing I have seen that day."

Adrian: (Not lifting his head out of embarrassment) "Yes we get it. You try to practice a bow and arrow and it suddenly goes wrong when you try to catch it with your foot."

Merlin: "Did it need stitches after that?"

Burrow: "Luckily and surprisingly, it only grazed between his toes near the tip so no injuries were conducted."

Merlin: (Sits in silence for a moment then speaks up) "Dad, how did you, mom, and uncle adrian learn from your experience in Beacon Academy?"

Burrow: "What do you mean?"

Merlin: "Do you remember when I attended the combat school in Patch? When you and mom would take me to see if I had what it takes to join with the higher ranks?" (He sees his father patiently sitting as it was his knowledge to continue) "I've always felt... burdened. Like I couldn't match what skills and semblances that the other kids had. From lifting stone with their bare hands and feeling no pain to shooting fire from your arms and being incredibly smart. I've tried to train myself into finding my semblance but no matter what easy method I try, it always ends with me not feeling confident. One day when I was in class, I was at my locker and putting away my notes until a kid from the first time class came near me and muttered me being a 'no power' or 'weakling'." (He rubs the soles of his heels) "When I found a way to make up for my lack in power, it slowly gave me a chance to share the world on what I was made off. But my errors would often make me feel defeated."

Burrow: "Son... I had no idea. I'm so sorry if I never asked about your well-being."

Merlin: "It's not your fault, Dad. I guess you could say it's my cursed often feel that life doesn't want to give me the best earnings by chance."

Burrow: "Now you take those words back because you are so much more than just a person with a semblance or dust powered boots. Even when there were some failings here and there, as well as trying to make sure that the boots worked properly, you always found another way and never gave up on them. Not just because they matter to you from your mother, but because they give you the strength that you felt like you needed for so long. I want you to know that whatever you feel, whenever you have thoughts of giving up, remember these words: 'Giving up means to stop trying. Keep trying on not giving up and show the world your strength'. A lot of people reminded me that I'm never alone when it comes to fighting my inner demons. Remember those words son and you'll never feel like quitting again.

Merlin: (Tears slowly well up in his eyes) "Wow. Thanks Dad. I needed to hear that."

Burrow: "You're welcome."

The two then share a warm embrace and Merlin silently cries in his father's arms. All he ever truly needed to hear was that he never was a failure despite the many he encountered. He thought he was never relied on having to let himself go but talking with his father helped him realize that he's always had people around him that lived and cared for him just as he was, semblance or not. After a few moments, Merlin lets go of the hug and wipes his eyes.

Burrow: "There's actually something that I wanted to give you for a long time. It was a gift from your mother before she passed but before she did, she wanted you to wear something on your travels."

Merlin: "Travels? What kind?"

Burrow pulls out a small box and opens it up to hand Merlin a sliver pin that had a boot with a glyph in the frame. In the box read a not that said:

Dear, Merlin

I'm sorry if I'm not there to hand this to you but I wanted you to make sure that whatever kind of adventure you would have, wear this to remember that your family will always be there. No matter the troubles. Whenever you feel alone. I will always love you, my little dreamer.

Love, Mom

Merlin was almost about to tear up again but his ducts were already opened and his flood was done. He took the pin and clipped it onto the top right spot on his shirt and it shimmered in the light.

Merlin: "Dad, thank you. I don't know what to say."

Burrow: "Dig deeper."

Merlin gave a confused expression as he looked into the box and what he saw was a badge from Beacon that needed to be filled but it had his name on it. His joy grew as it brightened an idea that popped into his mind and he looked to see his father giving a smile that confirmed his theory.

Merlin: "To Beacon Academy? How long?"

Burrow: "Your mom and I made preparations for if you decide to join the semester there. There's an airship that leaves for Beacon tomorrow. If you want, I can accompany you there until you take your leave."

Merlin: "I... I'll get my stuff ready."

He then excuses himself from the table and heads upstairs to begin not only packing for his new school but for an adventure that he never expected. He always dreamed on joining the finest in Beacon and now he has the chance thanks to both the parents that made it happen.

**The next day**

The sun was shining down on the small city of Patch as the airship depot was filled with citizens or academy attendants boarding the vessel. Many people who were in their younger teen years while there were elders and peers as well. One of the passengers was a ecstatic young man who was more than excited to attend Beacon.

Merlin: "Come on! The ship will take off any minute!"

Burrow: "Woah! Calm down, young man. It won't be the end of the world just yet."

Merlin: "I wanna make sure that we have plenty of time together before I leave. I don't want to make it seem like that I would rather care about being at the school than with you guys."

Adrian: "You would never. Besides, it'll be good to have you out of the house so you can be more sociable and energetic to more people."

Merlin: "That's not funny..."

Adrian: (Sticks out his tongue playfully)

Burrow: "Either way, I'm sure that the airship wouldn't take off without keeping track of any of the attendees."

Merlin: "True. Sorry if I seem too much into this. It'll be my first time away from home and I guess I'm just...nervous?"

Burrow: "And that's a perfectly normal thing. It means that when you have yourself to push the fears aside, it'll slowly seem like a memory over time because you've already experienced what you've wanted to do."

Merlin: "Like fulfilling my dreams on being a huntsman." (He slightly dips his head down in a small look of sadness) "I wish you could come with me as watchers."

Burrow: "Honestly there's nothing more I'd want than to keep an eye on you in case of any trouble. But this is a task that only you can fulfill. Having us in the way would seem like you never made the effort on your own. And besides I don't want you both to have any problems while you're gone."

Merlin: "Both?"

Cal: "Hello!" (He comes out with a suitcase and luggage carrier in hands)

Merlin: "Wait, you're coming too?"

Cal: "I've already applied a few months ago and I've been waiting on the results. When I heard that you got accepted into Beacon, I knew that I had to jump at the chance to join you."

Merlin: "A piece of home and family with me. I'm already gonna cry."

Cal: "Save the tears of joy for when we arrive. Oh! Speaking of which." (Carries his bags onboard)

Merlin: (Walks up the ramp until he stops part way) "Are you sure I can do this? I mean, what if I mess up on the first day of school or what if I have myself to be so embarrassed that I'd wish I'd regret on coming there?"

Burrow: "Remember what I said. Fear is only but a subtle thought in the mind. It only becomes real if you let that doubt and fear take a hold of you. And that pin on your shirt says the same thing."

Merlin: (Looks down and sees the silver trinket)

Burrow: "Family will always be there whenever we aren't in person. It means that even though Cal will be with you, we will always have you take a piece of us as well."

Merlin reflects on his father's words and understands as he turns around and drops his bag to give his father and uncle one last hug before take off. The three boys hold together in a warm embrace to signify that even though they won't be with each other for a time being, their family love is stronger than any aura they've known. Merlin let's go of the embrace as he picks up his bag and continues his ascent on the ramp and inside the airship that'll take him to Beacon. He and Cal wave goodbye to their loved ones before the vessel left the dock and into the air.

Adrian: "And now that you've let him be himself, how do you feel now?"

Merlin and Cal both walk towards the railing and hold on while making their travel.

Burrow: (Speaks in background) "Like I gave my boy the chance of a lifetime."

Merlin smiles as he looks down at the pin and then to his boots as affirmation took control of his nerves as his father's words were played back into his mind. How no distance and no doubt in the world will ever change him from the adventures he will have, the people he will meet, and the dream that he'll make happen...
