Melt her Mask Away

Summary:

This work has been discontinued and then restarted/expanded as Melting Masks.

Sayo tries her best to be who people expect her to be. The perfect friend. The perfect shrine maiden. The perfect granddaughter. The perfect magical girl.

It is what she must do.
But sometimes she wonders what it would be like to just... let go.

This is a Sayo-centric fic, following along her perspective starting from chapter 3 of the manga, but with a twist: Sayo is a trans girl.

Chapter Text

“We can finally go home! Thank god things were peaceful today.”

Sayo can see Haruka stretch in the corner of her eye as she goes about mechanically tidying her own school supplies. Kaoruko is of course the first of them to get her supplies in order, and is already sliding between Sayo and Haruka as their pink haired friend focuses on tidying her own desk. Sayo sees a head of purple hair passing behind them before turning to her friends. “Do you two wanna stop somewhere on the way home?”

With her school supplies safely placed in her own bag, Sayo finally looks up at her friends. “I’m sorry, but I’ll need to help out at home today.”

Her friends are far too used to her shrine maiden duties to be surprised, so they simply wish her goodbye as Sayo does the same before stepping out of their classroom.

As soon as Sayo turns into the corridor she can see Utena, shoulders drawn in further and back even more hunched than usual, moving halfway down the corridor. Sayo barely has to quicken her stride to catch up to her classmate.

“Hiiragi.”

Utena’s surprise at being called out is evident in the way she startled before turning around to face Sayo. “O-Oh, uhm, M-Minakami. Did… you need something?” Utena is always withdrawn, but she’s looked particularly troubled the past couple days: always lost in thought and daydreaming even more than usual. And that is evident in her demeanour now, even accounting for her getting called out earlier in class.

“Are you okay?”

“H-Huh?”

“You just looked troubled. I’m always willing to lend an ear if you need it.”

“Oh. I’m okay… but… thank you.”

Utena still looks nervous so Sayo gives her her best smile before stepping away. “If you’re sure. I’ll see you tomorrow then.” She gives her classmate a small wave that is shyly returned before continuing on her way.

“Grandmother, I’m home!”

Sayo’s grandmother was in her early 60s, wrinkles and greying dark blue hair evidence of her age, but she was still the same spry, kind woman Sayo had known all her life.

Her grandmother turns away from the shopping list she had been scribbling on, the burgundy eyes Sayo inherited from her softening with a smile.

“Ah, you’re early, Sayo. Always such a diligent girl.”

“I came home straight away after class.”

“Can you get started on cleaning the shrine? I’ll need to step away for a couple hours for some shopping.”

“Yes, grandmother.”

-

When Sayo had first come to live with her grandma she’d instantly started to help with anything she could around both the house and shrine, though she’d only started working as a shrine maiden proper years later. ‘ Sweeping around the precinct is so relaxing. I wish days like these could last forever… ’

The spark of dark magic blooming into awareness in the back of her mind and the tingle travelling down her spine had become intimately familiar to Sayo in the couple of years she had been a magical girl. This one’s intensity was new however, and something Sayo had only felt twice before.

It seems it wasn’t meant to be after all.

Sayo checked that the shrine was clear of any visitors besides her unwanted guest, before manifesting her Heart in her grasp. She placed the broom in her hands against one of the nearby statues, then let her transformation take hold with a muttered ‘Trans Magia’.

Azul advanced, wand in hand, towards the back of the shrine where she could feel the dark magical signature, wary of any traps like in the previous fight, but once she turned the corner she found the new Enormeeta villainess simply lounging around seemingly flustered. That she was here meant she was planning something, however.

“What are you doing here, defiling holy ground?”

The sound of her voice made the villain whip around to face her. “Magia Azul!”

“This time I’ll be preparing your funeral rites!” Giving the villainess time to create any monsters would just put her at a disadvantage, so Azul focused her magic into forming her trademark ice sword before lunging at the villainess. “Prepare yourself!”

The girl unfortunately managed to dodge the initial swipe of her sword, starting to move away towards the front of the shrine grounds, keeping space between herself and Azul in a desperate effort to dodge her attacks as the magical girl chased her relentlessly, eventually cornering the villain between herself and a stand of kitsune masks.

“Stop right there!” Azul was starting to fear the villainess would escape when the whipping sound of the villain’s crop served as Azul’s only warning before her world suddenly plunged into darkness.

“What did you do?!” Azul brought her free hand to grip at her face, finding instead the familiar smooth wooden surface of the masks sold by the shrine, held in place by what felt like belts. “Get this off me!”

I can’t get it off! I can’t see her, either, or feel her magic at all! ’ No matter how hard she tried to pull on it, the mask would not budge, leaving her defenseless. With no idea of where her enemy was, her hearing was her only option. “Where are you?!”

“I’m right here…” Azul didn't really expect a response, so at the whispered words she reflexively swung her sword in the direction of the voice; only to feel it pass through empty air. ‘ I missed?!

“Now, now, what were you hoping to hit with that?” This time, the words came accompanied by the fleeting feeling of something pointy pushing up her chin, but gone just as quickly as it had come when Azul raised her sword to strike through air once again.

This is useless, I can’t- where are you?! Where are you coming from next?! ’ Azul spun around, hoping to somehow get a single hit on the other girl as the villainess ran circles around her, drawing out futile attacks with whispered taunts and light, brief touches of her riding crop. Each failed swing slowly sapped Azul’s strength, her breathing growing laboured and panicked as she realised more and more how completely at the other girl’s mercy she was…

…until finally, Azul’s sword was slapped out of her hands, leaving her unarmed and scared. She tried to step back, to get as far away from the villain as possible, but she tripped on one of the flagstones.

Instead of falling to the floor like she expected, Azul felt an arm wrap around her back at the waist, before she was pulled flush against the villainess. “Why run around like that, Azul…”, the words were punctuated with a laugh from the villainess as Azul felt a hand slowly trailing up one of her arms, nails lightly scraping at her neck in a way that made her shiver before cupping her chin, ”...when you could never escape from me?”

The nails running over her spine made Azul’s skin break out in goosebumps as the heroine tried to pull away from the touch, only to push herself further into the other girl's embrace. That prompted a satisfied growl from the villainess, her fingers slowly running through Azul’s silky, long hair.

“W-What are you doing? Don’t-”

Azul’s words were cut short by the other girl's hand fisting through her hair and forcefully tilting her head to the side. Not forcefully enough to hurt, but just enough to get the point across. A sharp intake of breath was followed by air blowing on the exposed skin of her neck, drawing a gasp from Azul before the villainess pulled them both to the floor.

Azul barely had time to collect herself before an unbidden whine was pulled from her throat by a kiss planted on her neck, the warmth of it practically spreading down her body and pooling in her nethers… she could feel her little secret growing stiff in a way she had felt only a handful of times before. ‘ Oh God, not now. Please, not now…

The shame was enough for Azul to struggle again for a moment, but she was exhausted, her breathing laboured, so a single pull on her waist was enough for her to fall back down on top of the villain. Azul felt the other girl bury her face in the crook of her neck to plant another kiss in the same spot, a hum of pleasure making it past her lips and spreading through what felt like her whole body.

Azul felt the arm holding her waist withdraw, traveling down her body and under her skirt to squeeze her ass. The new, confusing sensation mixed with the fear that her secret would be discovered and that there was nothing she could do to stop it. “N-No… stop…”

If anything, her pleading only made the villainess grow bolder, peppering Azul’s neck with kisses as her hands roamed all over her body, squeezing and rubbing her breasts, grasping and kneading her ass, drawing gasps from her throat. The Magia’s thoughts grew fuzzier alongside the building warmth all over body, until she was only dimly aware of the hand leaving her ass, too lost in the sensations to do more than gasp as that same hand rubbed and coaxed her thighs into drawing apart.

Azul felt like someone had poured an ice bath on her, the hazy mist lifting from her thoughts just enough as she felt what had to be the villain’s knee make contact with one of her thighs, not stopping there as it drew closer and closer to- “W-Wait!”

Her pleading was answered only with a chuckle as the villain closed the gap, what Azul now knew for sure was a knee making contact with the stiffness in her underwear.

Azul felt the other girl freeze beneath her.

She knows. ’ Azul’s body started trembling as all her shame boiled over, a sob threatening to escape from her throat. She’d been found out. The villain would tell everyone. They’d look at her and only see a disgusting failure. They would all give up on her and she would be all alone and abandoned again .

The villainess was still silent beneath her, frozen to the point where Azul wasn’t sure she was even breathing. She felt the tears starting to build up in her eyes as a sob broke free from her throat. She tried to pull away from her, to run, to go anywhere other than here…

…but as soon as tried to do so, the other girl broke free from whatever stupor she had been under, grabbing Azul and flipping her over onto her back. She sat down on top of her and pinned Azul’s wrists beside the magical girl’s head as she chuckled.

“P-Please… let me go…”

The laughter just made Azul feel worse, a tear finally escaping from the mask's confines and leaving a trail down her cheek- a trail unexpectedly wiped away by the villain’s thumb as she cupped the side of Azul’s head. “So, so adorable .”

Azul breathed in sharply, a note of confusion breaking through her shame and self-loathing. That was not the reaction she’d been expecting. Then the hand cupping her cheek was gone, interlacing fingers with Azul’s own before wrenching both of her arms above her head as the villainess leaned down, flush against her once more, hot breaths caressing Azul’s ear in a way that made her feel warm and fuzzy.

“Such a pretty little thing…” The sudden fanged bite on her ear made Azul squeak. “...all for me.” The villainess freed one of her hands while keeping Azul’s wrists trapped with the other, using it to explore the magical girl’s body once more while peppering her neck with kisses and small bites.

Azul lost herself in the sensations, heat pooling in her belly, as every inch of her that the girl on top of her could reach was explored, kneaded, pinched, every touch blending into the next until Azul could barely distinguish between the heat of girl on top of her and her own, between the caresses of her uniform’s fabric and the villain’s touches. She barely even registered when a knee started grinding into her crotch again, barely aware of the noises she could no longer keep down.

Finally, after what could have been days, the villainess pulled away. Azul let out an involuntary whine at the sudden cold feeling that permeated her whole body, the villain’s words barely reaching her through the fog clouding her thoughts. “I think we’ll leave it here for today. Let’s have even more fun next time, Azul~.”

Azul did not know how long she lay there, face flushed, breathing ragged, heart racing in her chest, barely noticing her transformation coming undone as she grew too tired to sustain it, barely even registering as Magenta and Sulfur arrived and fussed over her, their words only half heard in between the villain’s parting words playing in her mind, over, and over, and over again.

It had taken a while for Haruka and Kaoruko to get Sayo aware enough to tell them she’d fought the new villain and pull her back on her feet. She’d tried to insist she could walk on her own, but Kaoruko had taken one look at her wobbling legs and started berating her for being stubborn, while Haruka looked at her in concern.

They’d brought her home after, her legs thankfully growing less wobbly as her breathing slowed back down and heart settled with time. Kaoruko led Sayo to her room while Haruka fetched a glass of water for her. Her pink haired friend knelt down in front of her while Kaoruko stood a couple steps back.

“Are you okay, Sayo? I’m sorry we didn’t arrive on time.”

“Don’t worry Haruka, I’m fine-”

“Fine? Ya were out of it and wobblin’ like a newborn fawn when we got here. The hell happened with that freak?”

Sayo swallowed as a flush grew on her cheeks. She opened her mouth, the words sticking in her throat for a moment before she forced them out. “I’m sorry, she… she knows.”

The girls took a moment to process her vague statement before Kaoruko’s widened. “Ya weren’t transformed! Fuck, she knows who ya are?!”

Sayo saw the panic rise in Haruka’s face before she realised the misunderstanding and cut in before her friends grew even more concerned. “No, no! That's not what I meant!”

That got her friends to calm down enough, even if Kaoruko still looked on edge, for Sayo to explain, so she took a deep breath before forcing the words out. “She… she found out my secret… that I'm trans.”

Sayo watched the realisation dawn on their faces before Haruka pulled her into a hug, Kaoruko stepping forward a moment later to lay a hand on her shoulder. “Did she do anything bad to you? Did she hurt you?”

Her oldest friend stared at her with concern while Kaoruko did the same to the side. Sayo thought of how the girl had reacted while trying and failing to ignore everything else she had done to her, a blush spreading across her face as the villain’s parting words came to mind unbidden. ‘ Let’s have more fun next time? What does she even mean, “fun”? What is she planning to do to me?!

“Sayo? Are you sure you’re okay? Did you actually get hurt?”

Haruka’s words startled Sayo from her thoughts. She shook her head as if that could dislodge the memories in her head. “I-It’s nothing! She didn’t really say anything about it…”

Kaoruko opened her mouth as if getting ready to dispute Sayo’s words when she was interrupted by the familiar voice of Sayo’s grandmother. “Sayo? Are you there?”

“The shrine! I didn’t finish cleaning!” The return of her grandma pulled Sayo’s thoughts back to her activities before the villain’s appearance had interrupted her, making her grow panicked as her friends attempted to calm her down as her grandma entered the room.

“Ah, there you are. Haruka and Kaoruko too! I didn’t know you girls would be visiting.”

The older woman was giving them a questioning look, so Haruka spoke up. “We were just planning on stopping by for a bit, Ms. Minakami, but Sayo wasn’t feeling well so we brought her inside.”

“But I’m feeling better now, so I’ll go back to cleaning!”

“Don’t worry Sayo, if you aren’t feeling well, you can finish tomorrow.”

“B-But-”

Sayo received only a smile before her grandmother turned to her friends. “Can you girls keep my granddaughter company for a bit while I get started on dinner? I have enough for 4 if you want.”

“We appreciate it, but we’re already set to eat at home.”

“But thank ya for the offer anyways.”

Her grandma finally left after that, leaving Sayo alone with Kaoruko and Haruka. Due to her grandma being home, neither of her friends pressed her on more details from the fight before they left just a short while later, leaving Sayo to help her grandmother finish making dinner once she felt better.

She withdrew to her room after her meal, trying not to think of what had happened earlier at the shrine as she got ready for a bath, but now free of any distractions, she could not stop the thoughts from creeping back in as she stared at herself in the mirror. It was usually something she’d avoid doing for too long, but this time there was something else to draw her attention.

Just above her collarbone was a small mark left behind when the villain had bitten at her skin particularly hard. It was barely visible by itself, and thankfully, hidden by her clothes. If her grandmother had noticed… she shivered at thought.

She ran her fingers over the mark, the skin just tender enough to be more sensible than its surroundings. ‘ I… thought she would have been disgusted and told everyone. But she called me adorable. Why? And why do those… things?

Sayo shook her head, trying not to get lost untangling that mess of emotions. Her face in her reflection was flushed, a look that was unfamiliar to her. Splashing cold water on her face dealt with some of the warmth before Sayo went to bed and tried to sleep.

Her thoughts kept her awake for a while.
