I was walking in the building in less than 15 minutes.
“Wheels up in 15.” Hotch’s voice called out, and I rushed to Penelope’s office.
“I’m ready to go!”
“That’s great!! Okay, we’re taking the jet, so-”
“The jet?”
“Yeah, duh! C’mon, get excited!”
“I am!” I wasn’t. I mean, I should’ve been, but the idea of spending hours on a tiny jet with Spencer made me incredibly anxious.
When I got on the jet, the lights were dimmed and everyone was half asleep. I couldn’t help but smile at Spencer laid in the corner, with a book resting open-faced on his chest. God, I’d messed up, but self-sabotage is my specialty after all. I sat in the only spot left between Spencer and JJ, who was asleep and had a little pink sleeping mask on. I sighed and tried to shut my eyes, drifting off immediately.
I woke up to rough turbulence rocking the interior back and forth. My heart leapt out of my chest, and I tried to grab onto the nearest thing, Spencer’s hand. Shit, he hates touching hands, especially mine. I expected him to pull away, but he held on tighter. I squeezed his fingers and exhaled softly when the turbulence resided. I apologized sheepishly and released his hand.
“Don’t..worry about it.”
“I know you don’t like being touched.”
“It’s okay.”
“No seriously, I never would’ve-”
“Don’t worry about it, Maisie.” Maisie. It was the first time in months that he’d called me Maisie and not Margaret or even Ms. Winters on the worst of days. I smiled at him, but he didn’t react, just went back to reading his book. I sighed and looked out at the clouds, knowing we’d be landing soon.
