Chapter 1: The cracks of dawn
Chapter Text
Sleep came easily to Lloyd after hearing Morro’s promise (more like a deal) to run away together.
It was a dreamless sleep, thankfully, so no unwanted nightmares woke him up this time. A first in a long time, really.
What did wake him up, however, was the somewhat gentle nudge near the shoulder, before a harder nudge was felt after a moment or two causing him to flinch. Lloyd eventually opened his eyes a little to see who woke him up, rudely at that.
And upon doing so, he saw the face of Morro staring back at him. Typical of him, apparently, leave it to him to wake people up rudely.
“Wake up, greenie. Time to go before the others notice you’re gone.” He warned, albeit quietly knowing damn well some of the other ninja here were light sleepers. He seemed to have just woken up earlier, judging by the fact he was already prepared to leave.
“It’s already time...?” Lloyd asked as he slowly sat up, stretching a bit to get rid of the sleepiness still in him. Morro nodded in response, answering as the blonde rubbed his eyes. “Yeah, it's almost 5:30, greenie. Better leave before Zane wakes up. He does wake up at 6, no?”
Not gonna lie, he had a point. If they needed to go, right now would definitely be the best time too if they don’t want to get caught and questioned by anyone. And fast.
Despite feeling utterly tired, Lloyd immediately got up (though had to stabilize himself to prevent himself from getting light-headed/dizzy) and started to prepare himself. From getting dressed to prepping some bags filled with a variety of items. Mainly food and water (that he somehow managed to take without detection), a couple sets of clothes, all his life savings, and some Starfarer comics along with a pack of cards (for... Some reason?) for when he gets bored.
Morro, meanwhile, decided to head outside first, sitting on the roof as he waited for Lloyd and watched the sun slowly but surely rise from the horizon. The colors fading from a deep-ish periwinkle blue of the night to a brilliant shade of pastel yellows and pinks. One of the many perks of living in the mountains, apparently. And also one of the few times Morro would appreciate life, despite having seen the sunrise many times by now.
By the time Lloyd climbed up onto the roof, small bag of supplies slumped over his shoulder wearing his usual green hoodie and jeans, it was already almost 6 am. “You sure took your time, didn’t you?” Morro teased as the blonde walked over to stand by the ghost who looked smug as hell. “Oh, shut it, Morro, you didn’t even help at all!” Lloyd shot back, rolling his eyes with a small pout before turning to face the sunset.
They both fall silent as they take this small moment to watch the sunrise together, their earlier bickering fading into the air. “The sunrise is really pretty, isn’t it?” Lloyd asked eventually, voice quiet with awe, like a child seeing the snow fall for the first time. Morro couldn’t help but look at the way the light shines on the blonde’s features.
It suited him, the morning light. Made his eyes and hair stand out like jewels (emerald to be exact) encased in gold. He looked perfect, but Morro’d never admit it.
Instead, all he could say was just a simple “Yeah, it does.” with the same awe, just this time... It sounded like a lovestruck fool silently admitting it to themself. Lloyd never catched on though, simply gazing back with a bright smile on his face as if he was free from burdens. Again, that suited him, very nicely in fact, that even Morro smiled back.
Maybe they both fell for each other harder at this moment, who knows?
“Lloyd, we should get going.” Morro said after he realized just how long they’ve been staring at each other. Lloyd immediately nodded, and if it weren’t for the cold of the morning, the blush on his face would’ve been obvious. “Y-yeah... We should” The blonde agreed, a bit too quickly, but it didn't really matter.
Suddenly, though, Lloyd gets a small idea. Since he was unable to use his vehicle (to avoid getting tracked by Pixal or anyone, really), why not use his elemental dragon as a way to race Morro? Yes, that felt like the perfect plan to do, after he asks one little thing of the ghost first. And so, he turned to face Morro with a face full of mischief as he asked a question in his most convincing and sweetest voice he could muster up.
“Say, Morro, just how good are you at using your powers?” This caused Morro to immediately look back at Lloyd, with a raise of a brow questioning why he was asking him this. “... I’d say I'm pretty good. Why?” He had a feeling that whatever the blonde was planning, it definitely had something to do with him using his wind-
“Is it alright if you could carry me with your wind as well?” With how close Lloyd was, it made Morro honestly more shocked than the question itself. “Please, Morro???” Morro could feel the tips of his ears start to burn the more Lloyd continued to act the way he was right now. It was just so damn adorable.
Eventually, the ghost sighed as he let his blush die down and finally answered with faux annoyance. “Alright, alright, I’ll carry you. Just hold on a moment, ‘kay?” And hearing that made the blonde jump with excitement and glee. Morro just chuckled and rolled his eyes as he steadied himself, letting the wind envelope and surround him whilst picking up speed until he was able to start floating.
A great perk that comes with being the master of wind, and Lloyd very much knew that.
The rest was like a routine, given how many times they've done this before, with the ghost extending his hand to silently invite Lloyd to take and the blonde letting himself get picked up by Morro. But what he didn't expect was to get picked up bridal style. Not that he wasn’t used to it, it’s just that considering what happened earlier, it made him feel a bit more... Shy? In a way? Oh, whatever, it was Morro so it should be fine. Not that he was thinking about just how close he was to him, no definitely not!
“Comfy?” Morro asked after a moment, breaking Lloyd out of his thoughts as he nodded. “Huh- Oh, yeah. I-i am, don’t worry.” He quickly answered, which made the ghost smirk as he started to fly away from the monastery before anyone noticed Lloyd wasn’t in his room anymore). “Flustered are we?” He mused with a teasing grin, causing the blonde to pout in response.
But Lloyd will admit, to himself at least, it did feel nice being in Morro’s arms again. Made him feel safe and almost... Loved, in more ways than expected. But he quickly pushed that thought aside for now, it was definitely not the time for a panic over this.
They both fell silent as Lloyd looked over Morro’s shoulder, the Monastery growing farther and farther by the second and it made him feel two things: doubt and relief. Doubt, as he wondered if this was the right decision. And relief, for he at least wouldn’t be babied or neglected by those he surrounds himself by on a daily basis. And Morro, knowing the blonde so well at this point, noticed. “Are your nerves kicking in now?” His tone was quieter this time, in empathy. He felt the same way when he left Wu, before his time came to an end.
“... I’m surprised it took this long, but yeah.” Lloyd responded after a bit, admitting his thoughts to the only person who was not only carrying him but also willing to listen when needed. The ghost only nodded. “We can go back, whenever you’re ready. Don’t think too much of it for now.” He quietly reassured, which was all the blonde needed to hear as he closed his eyes and rested his head against Morro’s chest. Letting the soft thumps of their heartbeat and breath soothe him.
His little plan can wait for a bit. Right now, he just wants to rest and relax. So he did just that.
Morro simply looked down at Lloyd, who thankfully still had the bag of supplies on him, and smiled gently. Silently noted how pretty how relaxed Lloyd looked and to find a way to cheer him up when it was time to take a break. Which shouldn’t be too hard, knowing what he does in his free time and his fascination with candy (especially pillow mint, which he had on his person, usually to bribe Lloyd. Much to his denial of “not being bribable” like he’d usually claim).
But for now, Morro had one destination in mind before truly running away: Ninjago City. Mainly to surprise Lloyd, but to also probably get a vehicle to travel easier in the future. Maybe a motorcycle or something like that, he’ll have to ask Lloyd when they get there.
Oh, the places they’ll go, but at least they have each other. No matter what, that’s what they swore to one another after all.
Chapter 2: When they're gone, we fall
Summary:
Kai felt guilt.
Guilt for causing a huge argument between him and Lloyd last night, that is.
But he also felt some twisted sense of pride from it. And he didn't know why.
The bond between the two, though better than it was when he and the others found out Lloyd was the green ninja, was still strained in some way or another. And he's trying his hardest to fix that. Starting with figuring out how to apologize to him for last night.
Though, of course things don't go the way he wishes, when it turns out Lloyd is gone.
Notes:
Y'know how I said it'll be bi-weekly updates? Yeah, so uhh... I changed my mind, lmao-
But yeah, it's now the ninja's POV! Enjoy the chapter, which was of course written during school (im am that bold to literally write it during school hours lmao-)
Chapter Text
Kai woke up around 7:14, almost 5 minutes after his alarm went off.
Was sleep alright? Pretty much, if you asked him. Just a simple dreamless sleep through the entire night, though there was one thing that nearly kept him up.
The argument with Lloyd.
It weighed him down, all the things he shouldn’t have said but did, only because his anger got the better of him. He regretted it, of course, but he has yet to apologize. Leaving Lloyd standing there with a shocked expression with words caught in his throat.
Kai recognized that expression all too well.
It was the kind of expression that lets you know you’ve fucked up, badly. Hurt mixed in with utter shock. Kai didn’t want to see that face again.
But what made things even worse was that a part of him wished to see it again. It was very unsettling when that feeling came up. Always was. Because who in their right mind would like to see someone, who’s basically considered your little brother, broken down like that and experience pride knowing you’d done that?
No one, right?
But Kai did, and now he wasn’t sure how to feel.
With a sigh, Kai got up to get ready for the day, dressing in his usual crimson shirt and some ripped jeans with a black sweater around his waist. Styling his hair with the iconic look (which he’s very much proud of), and simply walked out of his room. Making a mental note to apologize to Lloyd when he sees him, whilst pushing the conflicting thoughts away.
As he walked down the hallway, he simply whistled a little tune, before noticing that everyone’s bedroom door except for Lloyd’s was at least somewhat open. “Huh, that’s odd...” He thought to himself, “Lloyd’s usually up before me.” Kai stood there for a moment before shrugging and continued walking towards the dining area. He was hoping that maybe Lloyd didn’t get a good night’s rest and is probably sleeping in. Humming once more as he got closer to his destination, the smell of toast and eggs were getting stronger (making him more hungry) meaning that the others were indeed awake and about.
The moment Kai stepped in, he was immediately greeted with an energetic greeting by a certain lightning master who noticed him first.
“Oh, Morning Kai! Took you long enough, Cole was gonna eat your portion if you came out later!” Jay exclaimed with a smile, earning a glare from the earth master who was grabbing seconds. “I wasn’t, Jay! You were the one who was going to take Kai’s!” they shot back, while Kai simply shook his head and went over to grab his food. Listening to the bickering between Jay and Cole as Zane walks over to him.
“Morning, Kai. Slept well?” the nindroid asks as he places down a plate of food, presumably for Lloyd. Kai simply hummed back with a small but tired smile. “Yeah, you can say that.” Was all he said, but Zane frowned. He could tell Kai was hiding something. “... You know you’re a terrible liar, right?” He asked, with an unamused yet concerned tone lacing his voice in a way that made Kai feel a bit uneasy.
Of course he’d catch on, he was a literal nindroid for goodness sake.
So, with a sigh, he quietly admits what’s on his mind, for once in his life. “Just-... I’m just feeling guilty, for what happened last night. Y’know?” He was in the middle of grabbing some eggs and putting them on the toast. He didn’t feel that hungry this morning. Zane simply nodded, sympathy on his face as he replied back. “I figured... It’ll be alright, I’m sure Lloyd will forgive you if you apologize to him. He can’t stay mad for long, after all.”
Those words of reassurance made Kai doubt it. After all, even though Lloyd had a heart of gold and will find it in him to forgive those who’ve wronged in some way, he cannot help but feel like the blonde wouldn’t want to hear it from him anyways. Still, the fire master simply nodded. “Yeah, I’ll-... I’ll apologize, when I see him later on today.”
That made Zane smile softly, with a small chuckle. “Alright, I wish you all the best then, Kai.” He said before grabbing his plate of food and making his way towards the table, taking his spot next to Cole. Kai soon followed suit, sitting between Jay and his little sister, Nya, who looked awfully tired.
“Looks like someone’s in a tough state~” Kai took the opportunity to tease his little sister, which earned a glare and nudge from the water elemental. “Shut it.” Was all she said, and he immediately nodded. He may be a tease, but he knew when to not overstep boundaries. And soon, the morning was as is like every other day. Everyone was chatting, telling jokes, Jay sharing his weird dreams that no one asked for (but Kai listened to his rambles anyway), and eating food that Zane cooked because it was like heaven.
The only thing is, Lloyd wasn’t up yet. Which was weird, mainly because he surely would’ve been up by now. Speaking of which, everyone noticed that Lloyd wasn’t up by the time everyone finished their share of food.
“Hey, has anyone seen Lloyd? Should’ve been up by now.” Cole asked as he helped Zane with the dishes. The nindroid answered first, “No, I have yet to see him. When I woke up, it appeared he was still sleeping.” Everyone else agreed soon after. Lloyd wasn’t up, and someone had to wake him up.
Moments later, Jay was seen walking towards the hallway to the energy master’s room, despite Kai asking to go first. Which made sense, since there was a chance Lloyd probably wouldn’t want to see Kai at the moment. And once the lightning master entered the room, he was greeted with... Well, no one. Lloyd’s bed wasn’t made, which meant he was awake, and some of his favorite Starfarer comics were missing.
At first, he thought Lloyd was probably taking a morning shower, but he didn’t even hear the sound of water being used in the bathroom so that was a no go. Until he noticed a couple other items were missing. Namely his favorite sets of clothing, and all his life savings. “... Where did Lloyd even go? Did he wake up before us?” Jay thought to himself as he closed the door to Lloyd’s bedroom and quickly made his way to the others to deliver the news.
The first to notice Jay’s clear concern was Kai, who was near the couch at the time. “... He’s not here, is he?” the fire master asked, knowing what kind of news the lightning master would bring as he walked over to him. Jay simply nodded, “Yeah, he isn’t. His savings, comics, and some of his clothes aren’t even there.” Jay told Kai, nervousness was clear in his expression and tone, and everyone else grew silent as Jay announced it.
“Wait, Jay, are you saying that Lloyd is gone?” Cole spoke up first, shock on his face as Nya and Zane immediately went to the garage, where their vehicles and Bounty were kept. Mainly to see if Lloyd even decided to take his bike without the others knowing. Meanwhile, back at the main room, Jay nodded his head to confirm Cole’s assumption. Kai only stayed silent, a million thoughts raced in his mind with various scenarios. He felt so much guilt and panic settling in his mind but tried his hardest to appear calm.
There were so many possibilities that could’ve happened, some far more concerning than others, and everyone in the room didn’t really know what to say while waiting for Zane and Nya to come back
Eventually, the 2 did return, but judging by the looks on their faces... The news they have definitely isn’t a pleasant one. In fact, everyone had a very clear idea on what they’ll say. Zane spoke up, taking his spot next to Cole, and confirmed what they were all thinking. “... Lloyd’s bike is still in the garage. Nothing indicated it was used recently, at least to my knowledge.” His tone was simply deadpan, hidden behind it was slight panic and worry.
Almost everything went silent after that. Everyone looked at each other as they all thought about the many reasons why Lloyd wasn’t here. Nobody didn’t feel like speaking up, at least not yet anyways.
But Kai eventually spoke up, his tone masking the worry he (and clearly everyone else) currently has. “Well, maybe he probably just... decided to take a different approach to leaving the Monastery...?” He suggested with a nervous chuckle. It was more like he was trying to convince himself, than convince the others, but Nya shook her head. “If he did leave without taking his bike, I’m sure Pixal would’ve detected any movement if we asked her to check the cameras.” She simply stated in a quiet manner.
Jay then spoke up, voice wavering as he looked at Nya and Kai. “Well, why couldn't we just check that instead?!” In typical Jay fashion, it was clear he was starting to freak out. Zane eventually spoke up, voice remaining as calm as ever. “I believe now isn't the time to be freaking out. I’m positive Lloyd couldn't be that far, if he did leave on his own without warning and not taking his bike.”
Now everyone turned to face Cole on what his thoughts were. Which caused him to become a little defensive given they were all looking at him as if he did or said something to the green ninja. “Hey- Don't look at me! I had no clue about Lloyd’s plan. All I know is that there's a chance Zane is right.”
With a sigh, everyone eventually just stood there in silence, stuck in their own thoughts as they all tried thinking of something.
And wherever Lloyd was, they’ll find him. Someway, somehow. Even if there might be some... Complications.
