campus kisses

Summary:

The music is loud, and it’s mostly just a sea of sweat and a crush of bodies on the dance floor. The people there look at Mingyu like they want him, the lingering stares, the open admiration. And it’s starting to piss Minghao off.

He wants to march over, grab Mingyu, and pull him away from everyone, but he can’t. Because they aren't exclusive. They aren't even official. He has no claim to the man. He puts the barely touched bottle of beer down on the kitchen counter, finding that jealousy is a lot bitter than the drink, anyway.

Chapter 1: let me

Notes:

A deep, low murmur rumbles from behind him. "Let me."

His breath hitches as Mingyu's tall frame reaches up and easily plucks the book from the high shelf. He turns around to thank Mingyu, but the words die in his throat.

Chapter Text

SECOND YEAR, FIRST SEMESTER

Minghao walks into the aisle with the expectation that Mingyu is close behind. His footsteps are far too loud in the silenced space. He stops in front of a shelf filled with leather-bound books. His eyes land on one at the very top, the one out of his reach. He tiptoes, but his fingertips barely graze the bottom of the spine.

A deep, low murmur rumbles from behind him. "Let me."

His breath hitches as Mingyu's tall frame reaches up and easily plucks the book from the high shelf. He turns around to thank Mingyu, but the words die in his throat.

The book thuds to the ground, its pages fanning out like a bird's wings. At that point, he doesn't even recall the book’s title or why he needs it. A reference of some sort, maybe? Honestly, he doesn’t care at the moment. Not when Mingyu cups Minghao's face in his hand. His thumbs gently strokes the apple of his cheeks. Minghao feels his eyes flutter close as Mingyu leans down.

Minghao hums into the kiss. His blood runs hot, a needy want pulses in his veins. He drags a hand through Mingyu’s hair, pulling him closer. He relishes in the groan he elicits from Mingyu in return.

He faintly registers that they should be careful. He doesn’t want to get banned from the library, but all coherent thought fades from his mind as soon as Mingyu's tongue slips into his mouth. There’s a thin thread of spit connecting their lips when they pull apart. They’re breathing heavily in the quiet space between them before Mingyu has had enough of not touching and leans in again, ready to take his breath once more.

The second kiss is just as hungry as the first. Minghao’s hands slide down Mingyu's chest, bunching the fabric of his shirt as he pulls him flush against his body, but the slam of a door from the front of the library startles them apart. They freeze, their chests heaving. They peer down the long aisle, half-expecting an angry librarian to appear.

Mingyu reaches down and picks up the fallen book. He places it in Minghao's waiting hands. Their fingers brush. The simple touch feels electric after what just happened. "Let's get out of here," he whispers, his thumb stroking Minghao's knuckles.

Chapter 2: fuck... yes...

Notes:

He finds Mingyu leaning against a locker, dressed in a soft, grey hoodie and dark track pants. Mingyu runs a towel through his damp hair. When he looks up, his eyes widen in surprise before they crinkle into a soft smile.

"Hey," Mingyu says. "You didn't have to wait."

THIRD YEAR, FIRST SEMESTER

He’s been waiting outside the locker room for what felt like forever. One by one, Mingyu’s teammates trickle out. Minghao offers them all a polite smile as they pass by.

When Seungcheol, he shakes his head with a knowing look. "He's taking his time. Just go on in, he won't mind."

Minghao hesitates for a moment before pushing the door open and stepping into the locker room. The smell of chlorine and sweat hangs heavy in the air. He follows the sound of soft humming, making sure to keep his steps quiet against the tiled floor. Minghao feels like a teenager sneaking around.

Minghao just rolls his eyes. His gaze drops to Mingyu’s lips, then back to his eyes, before he moves. He attacks the exposed neck in front of him, nipping and lapping and placing open-mouthed desperate kisses on the long column. He quickly turns Mingyu into a whining whimpering puddle of need. He kisses Mingyu’s collarbone, scraping teeth. He reaches down to palm Mingyu’s hard length. Instinctively, he pushes himself up into that warm hand.

“Fuck… Yes…”

Mingyu gives in and lifts Minghao, who wraps his long, lean legs around his waist. Then he turns, pinning Minghao against the wall of lockers. He threads his slender fingers into damp hair, down his back and clutches Mingyu tight. Minghao pulls back to breathe, but Mingyu chases his lips.

“That was a good game,” murmurs Minghao.

“W-what?”

Minghao chuckles. "You played well. I'm proud of you."

His quiet laugh gets swallowed down when Mingyu connects their lips again.

Chapter 3: i got you

Notes:

Mingyu steps into the small shed, shaking the rain from his umbrella. His hair is damp. Raindrops cling to his eyelashes. Even soaked in the rain, he’s gorgeous. A silver lining in Minghao’s miserable day.

Chapter Text

THIRD YEAR, SECOND SEMESTER

It’s been a long day and the universe is intent on making it worse by having a curtain of water hammer down the pavement. Minghao is caught completely unprepared in the sudden downpour. Without an umbrella, he runs to the nearest waiting shed. Trapped, he slumps into the bench. It's a momentary cover, but it's not going to be enough when the rain gets stronger. Tears threaten to spill out of frustration.

He just wants to go home.

Minghao squints as the figure draws closer, moving fast towards him. A shining silhouette broke through the dark. With every hurried step, his pristine white shoes splash into the puddles. He doesn’t seem to care. The wind whipping at his umbrella. The shield is futile against the strong force of the rain.

Mingyu steps into the small shed, shaking the rain from his umbrella. His hair is damp. Raindrops cling to his eyelashes. Even soaked in the rain, he’s gorgeous. A silver lining in Minghao’s miserable day.

Minghao bolts out of the seat to meet him. “Are you crazy? Why would you run through this rain?” Mingyu just shrugs. "How did you even know I was here?"

He flashes Minghao a smile, unperturbed by the rain. “I have my ways.”

A loud clap of thunder booms overhead. Minghao jumps and stumbles back in surprise, but Mingyu's arm shoots out, catching him and pulling him close. He feels safe, sheltered.  At home.

“I got you.”

"Thank you," Minghao shouts over the sound of the thunderstorm. He is so lucky to have him.

"Anything for you," Mingyu shouts back.

He places a gentle kiss on Minghao's forehead. Minghao leans into it and feels the small smile pressed against his skin. Mingyu's lips then move to the top of Minghao’s head, where he leaves another soft kiss on his damp hair. The tender touch warms the chill of his skin. The world outside the shed fades into the background.

Chapter Text

FIRST YEAR, FIRST SEMESTER

Mingyu volunteers to grab a few archival DVDs for their group project from the AVR. Minghao follows him, mostly to make sure he doesn’t get lost. Rows of shelves are filled with old cassette tapes, film reels, CDs, and, presumably, the DVDs Mingyu is looking for.

"What's taking so long?"

"They're not labeled," Mingyu groans from a few aisles over. . "It's just… a bunch of tiny handwriting on these little stickers.

"Let me see," Minghao joins him on the hunt. For the next five minutes, they work in comfortable silence. Their fingers brush as they reach for the same DVD case, their heads bump together as they lean in to read the tiny script.

Suddenly, the lights flicker and die.

"What the...?" Mingyu says in a shaky whisper as his heart begins to hammer loudly. He can’t stand the dark. He hates not being able to see anything, but he knows Minghao is right there. He reaches out, and his hand finds Minghao’s waist. He pulls Minghao in close until his forehead rests against his chest.

“You’re such a baby,” Minghao giggles.

"Hey! Don’t laugh. There could be, I don’t know, monsters?”

“Monsters aren’t real.” He raises his head to look at Mingyu. He can make out the sharp outline of his jaw and the soft downturn of his lips. They are so close he could feel Mingyu’s warm breath on his face.

The fear of the dark is replaced by something else, an electric tension — an anticipation —  that hums between them.

Mingyu feels himself leaning in, drawn by an invisible current. His lips are just inches from Minghao's. Minghao felt himself leaning in, too, the air charged with an electric anticipation.

"Sorry, guys!” A student's voice chirps from the doorway.

Minghao and Mingyu jumped apart, their faces flushed. Mingyu’s arm fell from his waist.

“The main breaker tripped. You okay?"

Mingyu clears his throat, "Yeah, we're good. Just… looking for a DVD."

Chapter 5: got you your tea

Summary:

When Minghao still doesn’t say anything, Mingyu adds, “It’s sugar-free. I know that’s how you like it.”

"But your class is across campus in ten minutes," Minghao points out.

“It’s fine. I can afford to be a few minutes late.”

Chapter Text

FOURTH YEAR, FIRST SEMESTER

“Good morning,” Mingyu says, voice low in the early morning. “Got you your tea.” He presses the warm cup into Minghao’s hands and leans in to press a kiss against his cheek.

Minghao blinks down at the cup, brain still going a little slow. His boyfriend doesn’t have time to get him this  beverage before class. His own lecture room is 10 minutes away, in the opposite direction.

“You told me you were tired,” Mingyu explains. “I figured you’d want something.”

He notices Mingyu doesn’t have a coffee — his own go-to drink for an all-nighter — for himself. The thought that Mingyu went so far out of his way to get his preferred green tea comforts him more than the steaming paper cup in his hands.

When Minghao still doesn’t say anything, Mingyu adds, “It’s sugar-free. I know that’s how you like it.”

"But your class is across campus in ten minutes," Minghao points out.

“It’s fine. I can afford to be a few minutes late.”

Minghao hooks two fingers under the silver chain around Mingyu's neck and gives a gentle tug. With barely any force, Mingyu sways into his personal space, leaving him no other option but to come closer.

Mingyu presses their lips together. It’s a chaste press of sealed lips. Minghao answers by parting his lips slightly. The kiss deepens.

It's the sound of Mingyu's soft moan — low, breathless hum of contentment — that snaps Minghao back to the present. It breaks through the spell that they’re under. Minghao's eyes flutter open, his mind foggy with the sweetness of the kiss.

“We’re going to be late,” he tells Mingyu, who still has both of his hands curled around Minghao’s waist.

“I’ll see you at lunch,” Mingyu tells him, eyes hazy. Minghao eyes catch on the way Mingyu’s tongue licks over his bottom lip. “Enjoy your tea.” He ducks down again with another quick kiss against his cheek.

He heads for his own lecture, leaving Minghao in the hallway, grinning to himself.

Chapter 6: such as

Summary:

"I'm learning all kinds of things about you right now."

Mingyu's eyes darken with a mix of want and affection. "Such as?"

“That you taste a little bit of the strawberry jam you didn't finish from breakfast."

Chapter Text

SECOND YEAR, SECOND SEMESTER

By some miracle, they end up alone on the bed in Minghao’s dorm room that he shares with older cousin. Jun is nowhere to be found, likely on his own romantic rendezvous.

Minghao is straddling Mingyu’s lap, playing with the ends of his hair. Mingyu is half-hard underneath him and the feeling sends a sweet thrill down his spine. He just can’t help the way he grinds down. Mingyu tightens his grip on his thighs when he does.

“We should be studying,” Mingyu says, breathless.

Ignoring the half-hearted suggestion, Minghao guides Mingyu’s head to the side to mouth his jaw and press kisses along his throat. He traces kisses up until he can press his mouth against Mingyu’s waiting lips. He wastes no time and swipes his tongue along Minghao’s lips. They’re working up to an intensity that suggests… more, but there is no pressure. No rush.

They’re kissing for the sake of kissing.

His hands glide from Mingyu’s hair, trailing down his neck to rest on his shoulders. Mingyu’s own hands roam, leaving a trail of fire on Minghao’s skin.

Minghao pulls back just enough to look at him, their foreheads still touching. His lips are still tingling and he makes the mistake of glancing down at Mingyu’s. His lips are red and swollen. "I'm learning all kinds of things about you right now."

Mingyu's eyes darken with a mix of want and affection. "Such as?"

“That you taste a little bit of the strawberry jam you didn't finish from breakfast."

"Is that so?" Mingyu laughs. “Well, then…” He peppers Minghao with a series of quick, playful kisses — on his forehead, his nose, his cheeks, and finally, his lips.

Minghao vaguely registers the lock turning, but he can’t bring himself to care about anything that is not Mingyu’s mouth or hands.

Chapter 7: talk to me

Summary:

"Hey, what's wrong?" Mingyu asks again. When Minghao still says nothing, Mingyu begins to worry. "Talk to me," he urges. "Did something happen?"

"Nothing happened," he says. He turns to face Mingyu, his voice dropping to a low, raw whisper. "That's the problem. Nothing ever does."

Chapter Text

FIRST YEAR, SECOND SEMESTER

The party is fine.

It’s mostly just a sea of sweat and a crush of bodies dancing to loud music. The people there look at Mingyu like they want him. The lingering stares and open admiration follow him as he moves through the crowd.

It’s starting to piss Minghao off. He wants to march over, grab Mingyu, and pull him away from everyone, but he can’t. Because they weren't exclusive. They weren't even official . He has no claim to the man. He puts the barely touched bottle of beer down on the kitchen counter, finding that jealousy is a lot bitter than the drink, anyway.

Instead, he turns and heads out the back door, needing a breath of cool air. But not even a minute later, the screen door creaks open and then shuts.

"You okay?" Mingyu asks, his voice soft, so unlike the thumping music from inside.

Minghao doesn't reply.

"Is that what you want? For something to happen?" Only after he says this does Mingyu bridge the small distance between them. Minghao snakes a hand up Mingyu’s chest, along his neck, and settles in his hair. For a moment, neither of them moves, not until he nudges his nose against Minghao’s.

The party goes on inside, but Minghao can’t hear the music over the sound of his heart.

He isn’t sure who closes the gap in the end, but the next thing he knows, he has two soft lips pressed against his. It starts slow and soft, but Mingyu leans in a bit more and deepens it. He resists the urge to shiver when Mingyu’s hand traces down his ribs and settles at his hip, fingers digging into his flesh a little. A low hum of pleasure vibrated under his skin, fizzing in his veins like carbonation. His fingers tighten in his hair as he swallows down the desperate sound that bursts out of Mingyu’s throat.

Minghao thinks he could get drunk off this alone.

Chapter 8: we did it

Summary:

He rises onto the tips of his toes. His hands find Mingyu's shoulders to steady himself, as he brings their lips together. It's a kiss of triumph, of relief, of a future stretching out bright and uncertain before them. He could kiss him all night, into the next day, for years and years. Minghao knows then and there that he’d never want to stop kissing Mingyu. He pulls back and opens his eyes to see Mingyu still has his eyes closed and his lips puckered.

“Again,” Mingyu whispers.

Chapter Text

FOURTH YEAR, SECOND SEMESTER

Minghao navigates through well-wishers and congratulating classmates. He sees Wonwoo, arm slung around Jun’s shoulders. They’re smiling softly at each other. Jun sees Minghao first and gives him a wave, which he returns with a nod.

He spots Mingyu near the stage. His heart leaps. They push through the last few feet of space, and for a moment, they just stand there, diplomas clutched in their hands, taking each other in.

Mingyu is the first to move. A wide grin spreads across his face as he lifts Minghao into a tight hug, spinning him around. As they turn, the lopsided cap flies from Mingyu’s head. Minghao’s laughter rings out, clinging to Mingyu’s shoulders. "Put me down!”

Mingyu gently sets him down, but doesn't let go. His fingers gently touch Minghao's cheek. "You did it," his voice thick with emotion.

"We did it," Minghao corrects, a tear escaping the corner of his eye. “"I'm so incredibly proud of you”

"I couldn't have done it without you," Mingyu’s thumb brushes it away. "I love you," he says, the words clear and true amidst the joyous chaos.

Minghao's heart swells, a feeling so vast it threatens to burst. "I love you too," he whispers back.

Minghao smiles sweetly at him before their lips touch once more.
