Chapter 6: collision of worlds

Chapter Text

Even if deep down she wanted to, Indigo never believed on soulmates. Even if she was constantly surrounded by the likes, her moth- Rosalie and Emmett, Alice and Jasper, Esme and Carlisle. They were all the epitome of soulmates. The way they looked at each other like there was nothing on earth but them, it was that feeling that Indigo craved.

She thought she found it— many times, but they all showed her wrong. They weren't her soulmates, not Nikolai, not Alec nor Edward. The way she felt with them was nothing compared to the pull she felt now.

That warm, homely and secure feeling she felt, it was the best thing ever. Indigo didn't complain at all for all those years on solitude, they were meaningless. Now, every second in that cabin felt like heaven with him.

Nathaniel Swan, she had learned was his name, he preferred to be called Nate. Like sister like brother, she guessed. The name suited him, perfectly. Indigo had met people whose name did not match their face, something awkward about it. But him? It was just perfect.

After the initial shock, Alice had pushed her to sit- right across from him. It had been like she knew something she wasn't willing to tell, the redhead identified it by the little smirk that laid on Alice's lips.

The only sign of words were Alice, presenting Indie to Nate, and the other way around. After it, no one had uttered a word.

Indigo hadn't been able to open her mouth, too scared of saying the wrong thing. She just looked out the window, she could feel his stare every so often, examining her. But she couldn't dare to look at him.

She grounded herself by hearing his slow breaths and his quick heart beating.

He was human. Destiny had a funny way of laughing at her. She had searched love in every corner, she just forgot to see humans as ones too.

The plane had taken off a while ago. Bella had gone to sleep by Alice's command, and the vampire herself was looking through different magazines trying to busy herself.

For a moment, Indie really forgot about the real reason she was one the plane. She forgot everything else. On her mind, she examined every detail Nate had the first time. Just on her own mind though, the mere thought of looking back at him made her feel like a kid.

Yes, she was scared. Utterly terrified.

This was the one thing she had been searching on her life, some one to share her eternal suffering. it turned out, there wasn't an eternity to spend. Not when his breaths pumped in her superhearing ears.

It wasn't just about how he looked, though he was handsome in a quiet, understated way. It wasn't even about how the room seemed to shift when he was near, though that was undeniable. It was something deeper—something that made her feel at once terrified and alive.

His voice surprised her. She hadn't expected him to talk. "So, you're also a Cullen, or...?" Nate's voice was low and smooth, with a quiet intensity that made every word feel deliberate. If she hadn't been a vampire, she could've easily ignored it. There was a warmth to it, though it stayed hidden behind his guarded nature. When he spoke, it felt like he was choosing his words carefully, yet when he relaxed, his tone carried a subtle charm.

Indigo finally turned to look at him. She tried to contain herself as she let out a little chuckle. "Ye could say that. Though, i'm the newest on the family." Her accent made it sound almost comforting, like the words were meant for him alone. She shrugged lightly, looking down at her hands, her fingers fiddling with the edge of her sleeve.

Nate couldn't help himself, his words flying before he could think. "How long have you been, you know, doing... this?" He gestured vaguely, not wanting to say the word vampire out loud. The last thing he needed was another reminder that everything around him was surreal.

Her lips twitched in amusement, as if she knew exactly what he meant. "Doin' this," she echoed, another chuckle escaping her. "Oh, far too long for my taste. Around fifty years."

She said it so casually, as if being a vampire wasn't the least bit strange. For a moment, Nate just blinked, then sighed, rubbing his temples. "This is insane," he muttered under his breath, before glancing at her. "But you—" He stopped himself, unsure of how to finish the sentence.

"Me?" she asked, tilting her head in his direction, her green eyes catching the dim light. "What about me?" Her features moved into a frown.

"You're different," Nate said, his voice low, almost as if he were talking to himself. He didn't mean it in a way that was offensive, more like an observation he couldn't ignore. "Your eyes." He pointed to his own. "They're not golden."

Indigo paused, her expression unreadable for a moment. She let out a soft sigh, her fingers now still in her lap. "Yeah, contacts. We use them sometimes when we're surrounded by humans. Green was my eyes colour before the transition." She lifted one of her legs on the chair and hugged it.

Nate nodded again, but didn't ask anything else. Indie had expected more questions, but nothing just silence.

He turned his head towards the window.

Indigo frowned, wanting to hear more about him, but deciding against it.

In Nate's mind, it was all a mess. He didn't know how he had been composed enough to talk to her, he had surprised himself when the sound of his voice came out. He didn't even know why he felt like this, he wasn't like this around girls.

Nate couldn't lie to himself and say she was ugly, far from it. She was probably the most beautiful person he had ever laid his eyes on. It wasn't the kind of beauty you would find in a magazine, that was the type his friends searched for. Indigo had a unique type of beauty, this beauty you couldn't find anywhere It was soft and silent, something so gentle you didn't realize you were drawn to until you couldn't look away.

He had never felt his heart beat so fast than when he first saw her. For a while, he thought this was all a drug induced dream or a fucking illusion. He wasn't like this, he wasn't a little teenage girl who giggled when a boy looked at her and blushed when he spoke to her. But right now, he felt exactly like it.

Was that her... gift?

Alice had explained that part of being a vampire too, their powers. Only some of them had them. Edward could read mind ( that just assured Nate he was a weirdo. He wasn't here for him, but to make sure Bella wouldn't die ), Alice could see the future and Jasper could feel and manipulate others emotions. So, keeping that in mind, did Indigo have some power that made everyone attracted to her? Like a siren? That would explain why he felt like this.

Nate surprised himself when his mouth moved and sound came out. "I'm probably going mad." He chuckled and rubbed his eyes.

Indigo frowned and turned to look at him, he hadn't taken his gaze out of the window. "Why'd ye say that?"

The boy sighed and finally looked at her again. It had been around a hour since their last conversation ( could you even call it that? ). "I dunno." He shrugged his shoulders. Green and brown crashed. A stupid thought ran his mind, he wanted to see her eyes under those green contacts. "I feel like this is just a dream or sum shit, probably a vivid dream too."

The redhead hummed silently and tried to hide her smile. She loved the sound of his voice. "Ye should sleep." Even if it was this of a mundane situation, Indigo would squeeze every bit of their interaction and hide it in her heart for the rest of her existence.

"Do I look that bad?" The boy laughed, though a weak one.

Indigo shook her head fast. "No- I mean..." She thought of her answer for a bit, debating her next words. "You look like someone told you vampires were real."

He let out a short breath—half laugh, half disbelief. "Yeah, well..." Nate's words got quieter. He didn't know how to keep the conversation up, he liked speaking with her. Her voice was like nothing he had heard before ( like everything else about her ). "I guess I should sleep." His words were soft.

Indigo smiled— a true smile, and took a book out of her bag. Nate gave her a last look before starting to accommodate himself to sleep.

The last thing he heard before fell into a dream was the sound of the pages changing and Indigo dropping her bag to the floor.

FLORENCE, ITALY, 2006

"How far is it from Florence to Volterra?"

"That depends on how fast you drive...Guys?"

"Yes?

"How strongly are you opposed to grand theft auto?"

"Hey! I know that game!... Ow! Bella?!"

Indigo had been left as a babysitter as Alice ran around the airport to find a car for them. Bella was taking little anxious jumps and Nate just looked bored.

Indigo was gonna shit her pants. She didn't like this whole thing one bit, like- at all. Edward better had a better excuse for wanting to kill himself than Bella being dead, Indigo swore to herself if he didn't, the Volturi wouldn't be the biggest of his problems. Though, deep down, she hoped they would have time to save him. According to Alice, they all had till noon. That was when the sun was overhead.

The redhead was wearing a cap ( It was Nate's, he had offered to her before leaving the plane after he saw the sun shining outside ) and the biggest sunglasses she had ever owned over her eyes. Her clothes were covering every other part of her body, making sure she wouldn't shine in the sun.

A bright yellow Porsche screamed to a stop a few feet where the trio stood. Everyone in the sidewalk of the airport stared intensely. Indigo wanted to crawl under the floor from embarrassment.

Through the open passenger window a shout was heard. "Hurry!"Alice screamed.

Indigo was the first one to move, first to the passenger seat, but she decided against it and walked to the backseat and slammed the door open. She turned to look at the two siblings who weren't moving. "Yer are moving in donkey years. C'mon!"

And that's when they moved. Bella towards the passenger seat and threw herself in and Nate towards the back. He waited for indigo to sit before entering himself. The boy didn't have time to buckle himself up when he felt the car speeding. His back hit the seat and he let out a groan.

As soon as she sat down and the car sped off towards Volterra, Indigo took her glasses off and sighed. They were one step closer to Edward.

The fourth of them were silent for a while, all inside of their anxiety ( minus Nate ). Bella was holding on the dashboard, trying not to move too much by the speed Alice was going. Nate was just looking out the window, enjoying the view.

"Indie?" Alice muttered towards the redhead.

Indigo stopped fidgeting with her sleeves and looked up, to the rearview mirror. Their eyes met. "What's the craic?"

The other vampire sighed and looked back at the road, Indigo didn't take her eyes off Alice though. "Can you reach him?"

Indigo knew exactly what she meant by it. "Yeah." She sighed and closed her eyes, her mind overworking trying to find Edwards mind. She tried muffuling every other sound, her hands over her ears.

Bella looked at Alice, a frown in her face. "What is she..?"

The brunette vampire looked at Bella, then at Nate, who also looked curious on what was Indigo doing. "She is searching his mind, Edward's." That only made the two humans more confused.

Bella never knew about Indigo's power, Edward had talked about it very vaguely. Well, that was usually how he spoke about anything having to do with Indigo overall. It was something having to do with the mind, it wasn't the same he had, but similar.

"Indigo can make connections between minds. She can project her toughs or memories thought it. Before it was only through her touch, now she can do it without."

After a few second of silence, Indigo groaned and opened her eyes. "I can't, he's too far." She looked over at Nate, who looked shocked. The girl tilted her head. "Jeysus fella, stop staring, will ya?"

He twisted his head towards the window.

Bella turned to Alice again, worried. "Do you see anything?"

"There's something going on." The vampire muttered. "Some kind of festival. The streets are full of people and red flags. What's the date today?"

"The nineteenth." Nate said from the backseat.

Indigo let out a laugh.

Alice sighed. "Well, that's ironic. it's Saint Marcus Day."

"Which means?"

The redhead beat Alice to it. "That we gonna have a shite more of work."

Alice chuckled. "The city holds a celebration every year. As the legend goes, a Christian missionary, a Father Marcus—Marcus of the Volturi, in fact—drove all the vampires from Volterra fifteen hundred years ago. The story claims he was martyred in Romania, still trying to drive away the vampire scourge. Of course that's nonsense—he's never left the city. But that's where some of the superstitions about things like crosses and garlic come from. Father Marcus used them so successfully. And vampires don't trouble Volterra, so they must work. It's become more of a celebration of the city, and recognition for the police force—after all, Volterra is an amazingly safe city. The police get the credit."

It was Nate's turn to laugh. "Funny."

VOLTERRA 2006

Alice had driven right across the fence with a sign that said 'only pedestrians from here'. She had also completely ignored the guard that had started running behind the car, although he gave up pretty quickly when Alice sped up even more. They were inside Volterra at least.

The seriousness of the situation hit Indigo. Edward waa trying to kill himself, and this wasn't one of their little suicidal jokes, this was very real. Indigo didn't want to think about it, even less about the boy sitting next to her. She had too many thing in her mind, and too little time to digest them.

At the fourth time Alice almost ran over a human, Indigo shouted. "Alice?! What are ye doin'?!"

The vampire didn't respond she just honked the car again. The only thing that was heard was Nate's chuckle.

Bella's anxiety was almost dripping out of her. "We have five minutes." She muttered, hands in her hair.

"I know, Bella, Just breathe."

From the backseat Nate took his hand and put it on Bella's shoulder. "Everything will be fine." He tried to reassure.

The car came to a sudden stop, and Nate almost hit his head on the passenger seat. "Fuck." He muttered to himself.

There were now more guards, and these weren't going tp let them pass. Bella jumped out the car. Nate and Indigo we're on the movements of doing so too, but Alice stopped them. "Wait."

Bella looked back at Alice. "Alice." She begged when she saw that no one else was leaving the car.

"Bella, you're the only one he can't see coming. If we go, he'll read out thoughts. He'll think we're lying. He'll rush into it."

"What?"

Bella ignored Indigo. "Where do I go?"

"He'll be under the clock tower. Go!"

Before Nate could register what was happening, Bella had slammed the door and run out. "Wait!" He screamed and tried to open the car door, he couldn't. Alice had blocked the doors.

She turned toward the backseat. "Did you hear anything i just said?"

"I don't care!" He shouted, still trying to force the door open. "I'm not letting her go alone! She's my sister!"

Indigo had begun questioning why she had come here.

Alice sighed at put the car back on."Let's find a parking spot." She ignored Nate trying to tear the door open and his shouting.

Indigo was sure, if she had been human, she would've vomited. This didn't feel right. Not at all. She wasn't the seer and she still knew nothing was going to end up well. She didn't move from her seat, her eyes glued to the back of Alice's seat.

Once the car stopped again, Alice turned to look at the duo on the back. "You're not going to like this, but you two can't go."

That was when Indigo snapped from her thoughts and looked at Alice. "What?!" Her voice had been mixed with Nate's voice.

"You can't. Nate, you are human, if what I've seen is true, you wont end up well." She turned to the redhead. "Indie... He can't be here alone. You know it better than all of us. If you want Edward and Bella to come back in one piece you are going to trust me."

"Fuck no!" Nate quickly said, the doors were still locked.

Indigo knew exactly what Alice was talking about, and at the same time, she had no fucking clue. "Alice..." She pleaded with a soft voice.

The brunette vampire only took her sunglasses and put them on. "Seriously guys. You have to say in the car." She took the keys and gave them to Indigo. "Please."

Indigo was speechless, she only nodded and took the keys. Soon enough, Alice was gone. Nate shrunk in his seat. "This is bullshit."

"Indeed it is." She murmured back.
