Chapter 1: sibling therapy sessions are not for the weak
Chapter Text
Regulus Black thought he was smart. He usually could anticipate most people's responses before they spoke. That was why he was so good at this whole sibling therapy thing. But this? This was a surprise.
“I think that you both would really benefit from a shared environment. Sirius, you mentioned the lake house that your friend owns? Maybe Regulus could spend part of the summer with you.”
Maybe when hell freezes over, Regulus thought to himself, because there was no universe where his brother would willingly spend over a week with him-much less a therapist issued one.
“I mean I would have to ask James, but yeah that could happen.” Sirius said, far too casual for a man who had once threatened to throw Regulus into moving traffic.
As you can probably tell by now, they didn’t have the most amazing sibling bond. I mean, Regulus would probably take a knife for him, and vice versa. But they didn’t really like talking to each other anymore, not since Sirius had run away when he was 16 and left Regulus all alone with their parents. Luckily, three years later he had gotten out and started fresh. Now a year later Regulus had built a life for himself that he was proud of, sometimes. The other times had lead to his friends Evan and Barty convincing him while they were all drunk to get a therapist.
He still remembers showing up to the first session, with mismatched socks and a hangover. It had gotten slightly better from there. Linda, the sweet, sweet soul, had recommended reaching out to Sirius, and had gotten him started with Minerva McGonagall, a tall woman with a slight resemblance to a cat. Sirius had shown up to their first session, the first time they had seen eachother in months, and had refused to make eye contact with him the whole time.
Linda had to hear a lot about that.
Now, things were considerably better, I mean as well as you could hope for from two emotionally suppressed brothers. Well, until now.
Being trapped-no spending the summer (see, he was working on positive thinking!) with Sirius and presumably his friends sounded like a nightmare straight from hell.
Belatedly, Regulus realized that Mineva and Sirius had been staring at him, waiting for an answer.
“I mean, I think I would be a bit overwhelmed by all those people.” He said, really hoping that the desperation wasn’t leaking into his tone. Really, what did they expect from him? Dancing and skipping around the room?
Sirius scoffed. “Are you kidding me, your just looking for an excuse to back out of this! I know damn well you don’t want to go, so you're making up some bullshit excuse, as always.” Damn it.
Honestly, he doesn't hate his brother. He could see right through him sometimes, like now, and it was really fucking annoying, to say the least.
And you know what? Regulus is feeling extremely generous, so he decides not to tell him exactly where he can shove is opinions. Instead, he listens to the planning that Minerva and Sirius start doing, and he limits his eye rolls by quite a bit. "I can bring my friends too." Regulus says, because he refuses to be stuck with Sirius's little quartet of chaos for the summer. For some odd reason, his brother agrees. To say Regulus is confused would be an understatement. Who is this docile, freshly sedated thing that has replaced his rebel of a brother?
The session ends with Sirius telling him he would "Text him the details,". Mind you, the last text Regulus sent he had left him on read!
He wasn't one to look a gift horse in the mouth. so he walked out of the room and got straight on the subway. While putting his earbuds in, he noticed his roomate Pandora Rosier getting on with a very pale person, her gesturing rather angrily, and him giving a serene smile in return. Interesting.
By the time Regulus had walked over to investigate, they had seemed to enter a silent staredown. The closer he got, he realized how odd Pandora's opponent was. They had very loose airy clothing on, but an abundance of bracelets on both arms, and ears full of piercings.
"New friend?" Regulus said, once a fly had buzzed between the two, and causing them to blink and turn to him.
Pandora stared at him for a few seconds, giving him a look that very much said, "What do you think, dumbass?", before her face broke into a grin, her smiley piercing peeking through.
"I'm Xeno."
"He works with me. I was just telling him that when you work in a library, the front desk is supposed to help with main questions, not point them in the general direction and tell them to find me if they need help." Pandora said, batting away Xeno's extended arm with a huff.
"Well, it's nice to meet you Xeno. I can't say I agree with you on library policy though." Regulus said, slightly confused, but also extremely entertained by whatever library feud was happening between them. He let Pandora and Xeno continue arguing, while he opted for his earbuds. He let The Smiths' Back to the Old House wash over him, relaxing his shoulders as the familiar guitar sound started to play.
I would rather not go,
Back to the old house.
He had always liked the song, it reminded him of growing up in his own home. It hadn't always been that bad, at least in the beginning. Walburga, his mother might have been slightly removed from them, and his father Orion may have been a but rude, but really it was alright. Then, when Regulus had been five, Sirius had gone out of the house before dinner, and decided to play outside with the gardeners, getting his clothes rather dirty in the process.
It was like a flip had switched in his parents.
~~~
Regulus peeked through the door of the study where Maman had taken his brother after dinner. From where he was standing, he could see all the knots in Siri's hair. Was that a leaf? He shook his head to clear the thought. Regulus was here to see what Maman was going to say, not look at leaves and knots.
"Your clothes are ruined! Stupid boy, don't you know not to run around with those lesser than you." Regulus really didn't know why maman was so mad. Maybe it was because Siri didn't take him outside to play? And his clothes didn't look all bright anymore. They were the color of the outside floor, and it looked funky with the white.
SLAP.
"That is your punishment for disobeying by orders." Maman had said, looking very mad. Her face had turned very red, and it had gotten all wrinkly, and Siri was crying and holding his cheek. Regulus didn't like the sound that, it made his head feel all funny.
His mother started moving towards the door, and Regulus knew it was time to go back upstairs before he was found out.
~~~
Eventually, Xeno got off at his stop, and decided to blow a raspberry at Pandora before leaving. Odd. A couple stops later, it was Pandora and Regulus's turn to get off. They walked in companionable silence towards the apartment that they shared along with Barty, Dorcas, and Evan.
Regulus thinks that living with his friends is the second best idea he's ever had in his life. Apart from when he has to hear Dorcas having sex through the walls, or when Pandora sometimes forgot to put the butterfly skeletons she liked to collect back in her room. And lets not forget Barty and Evan, who had enough sexual tension between them to last through the year.
This is one of the times where he doesn't really like living with them. As the two of them walked into the hall, and Regulus turned the key to enter, he was faced with the image of glass all over the kitchen floor, a very sheepish looking Barty, Evan looking flushed, and a very angry Dorcas.
Oh God.
Regulus Black was so fed up of them.

Chapter Text
Evan rosier was a lot of things. Quiet, funny, tall, and other great amazing personality traits. Inconspicuous about his big fat crush was not one of them.
He had first met Barty back when they were kids, put in the same preschool by the same type of neglectful father. Barty had bitten a kid that had made fun of Evan’s skin color and afterwards offered him a rock, and they had been best friends ever since.
Once Evan had turned 14 and hit puberty, he had begun noticing things about Barty. How his legs looked in his P.E. uniform. How his eyes darkened when he was up to no good (which was always), and especially how good his hair looked windswept.
Now, it had evolved to, oh my gosh those low-slung jeans are doing things to me, wondering what kissing someone with a tongue piercing would feel like, and not being able to speak whenever Barty changed the color of his hair (which was very often).
The whole being gay thing hadn’t really been a shock to Evan. I mean, he hadn’t really realized he was “supposed to” be into girls until he turned ten. He had just been drawing out his future wedding-to a man of course- when some other kid had asked why his wife didn’t have long hair. Evan remembered blinking at that kid, and wondering why he would get married to a girl when people like Heath Ledger existed (Yes, Evan had had a Brokeback Mountain phase later on ).
Being attracted to Barty though, that had been a shock. Evan still remembered the moment it had hit him. It was summertime, the summer before freshman year at Hogwarts, and they had gone out to the stream nearby his house for the day.
~~~
Your dad’s a bitch.” Barty had said, laying back in the grassy bank and closing his eyes, basking in the sun. His skin had started to turn slightly pinkish after hours of being outside. Evan wondered if they could go out and buy cream for the sunburn that was bound to worsen later.
“I know. So’s yours” He said back, mirroring Barty’s actions.
He looked over at Barty, really looked at him. Took in his dark, messy hair. His brown eyes, that if you really looked, had flecks of green in them. Took in the little scar by his chin from when he had fallen off his bike. Took in how straight his eyelashes were. Took in his lips, and the light shade of pink they were, and wondered what it would be like to kiss them.
Wait what.
Evan blinked. Why was he thinking about kissing his best friend? I mean sure, Barty was good looking, but Evan didn’t like him like that…right?
Shit.
He liked Barty Crouch Jr. Maybe even more than liked him.
His stomach dropped. He knew he liked boys, but Barty? That couldn’t happen. Barty was his only friend, and his stupid feelings were going to ruin this whole friendship.
He was startled from his thoughts as his twin sister, Pandora came running over to them.
“Barty, Evan! Come with me across the street, there’s a new kid our age who just moved in. He told me his name is Regulus Black! He also has a brother, but he’s a year older and got sent to some school. Hurry!” She said, practically vibrating with excitement.
~~~
After he realized that he was in love with Barty, Pandora had introduced them to Regulus, and the four had been a pair ever since. Once Dorcas had transferred to their boarding school the next year, the group had been completed.
Barty had pretty much attached himself to Regulus once they had met. It had hurt slightly, but Evan had just told himself that it was natural, and it had been. Until Barty had said that he might like guys. Specifically, he might like Regulus.
And that? That had hurt a lot. Eventually Barty’s crush had died down, but not before Evan had gotten all crazy depressed about it.
I mean, who wouldn’t. The guy he was in love with also liked guys, but didn’t like him.
It stayed like that for another six years, but in the past year something had changed. The casual flirting they engaged in had turned into eye contact that felt a bit too homosexual to be platonic.
Like now, for example.
Him, Dorcas, and Barty were all in the kitchen, Barty was putting away dishes and Dorcas was on the counter. Evan was making food for the night. He was making pasta, Barty’s favorite food (No, he will not be commenting on that).
“Anyways, I told her that asking your friends to have sex with you while you're drunk could probably mean that she isn’t straight, and she totally flipped out on me, and basically all I said was that it was okay to not be straight. Personally, I think it’s some sort of internalized shit, but I’m not even going to try to tell her that. ” Dorcas said, sipping on her daily glass of lemon water with the elegance of someone who knew exactly how good she looked.
It was a shame, if Evan was into girls, he would most definitely be in love with Dorcas Meadows.
“I mean I get it though, you can totally make out with the same gender in just a platonic way. It’s the whole rubbing up against girls at bars and taking them to the bathroom thing that makes me go, huh?” She continued.
She was talking about one of her friends, he was pretty sure her name was Lily or something like that. Apparently she dated only guys, but whenever she was drunk would get with girls. Evan didn’t really care about her that much, I mean she was free to do whatever she wanted.
“I don’t know man, I think that's got to be something for her to figure out by herself, the whole natural discovery of maybe not being straight is a lot better than being told by her friends.” Barty said, setting a plate in the cabinet.
“I agree. But at least you told her that not being straight was an option.” Evan said.
“I wish someone had told that to me when I was like ten. That would have saved me a lot of confusion. Like, I was staring at Julia Stiles in 10 Things I Hate About You a bit too much to be considered normal.” Dorcas said, smiling a bit.
“You know who my bi awakening was? Evan.” Barty said, laughing.
Sorry, what the actual fuck?
“Wait really?” He said, really hoping that he hadn't turned too red.
“Um, yeah. What can I say, you’ve always looked good in swim shorts.” Barty said, winking then looking away.
There was a slightly awkward pause as Evan tried to figure out how to respond to the person he was in love with telling him that he had been his bi awakening.
“Oh, uh awesome.” He said, mentally facepalming, because What idiot says awesome when their crush says they like how they look in a swimsuit.
“I mean, you don’t look too bad in those green boxers of yours, if I do say so myself.” Evan corrected himself, really hoping he wasn’t being too obvious.
Crash!
“Fuck.” Barty said, staring at what used to be Dorcas’s favorite mug.
Just then, the apartment door opened, and Pandora stepped through with Regulus trailing behind. It was almost comical really, the way that the two of them took in the mess on the floor.
Pandora let out a little huff as her mouth dropped open. Regulus just looked resigned.
And Dorcas? she looked mad. she stared at Barty with an expression very similar to a predator who had just lost it's prey.
Evan? He just leaned back on the counter and prepared for the chaos that was about to come.
