Chapter Text
They were both stranded, deep in the dark underground. Gabriel didn’t know where they were going, as Vittorino said the Basilica moves and makes you go where she wants, not you. The air around them felt damp, he could barely breath. One thing, they couldn’t go back. Ryker, the other priest, had broken the ladder trapping them both. Who he thought was an ally turned out to be a horrible, horrible person.
Gabriel was walking in the front, holding a flashlight, with Vittorino following close behind him. By now they have been walking forward for, maybe an hour? He wasn’t entirely sure. He wasn’t sure of many things. When they just met, Vittorno kept asking if he remembers things, things he never even heard of. Vittorino seemed to know more about him than he did himself. He kept asking do you remember this? Do you remember that? The answer is no. Gabriel didn’t remember anything. Nothing. The last few years were… how to explain.. a blur. One day he just woke up, barely any memories of the past and no idea what was happening. All he remembered was what his job is, and that for some reason he was supposed to go to Rosso Cadere. For the first few days he even forgot his own address.
Patrol the Basilica, that's what the boss told him to do. Go into the abandoned building and make sure there are no squatters. They asked if he needed anyone else, he replied no. Should have though.
The long corridor they were walking through was coming to a cross section. Either left or right. Gabriel paused, flashing his light in both directions. Vittorino ran into him from behind, stumbling backwards about to fall. Quickly Gabriel reached out and grabbed the man’s hand.
“Are you alright?” Gabriel asked, pointing the flashlight onto their feet.
“Why did you stop?” Vittorino tried to look in his general direction.
”There is a cross section here, we can either go left or right.” He rubbed his neck, “I’ve never been here before, do you recognize where we could possibly be?” Gabriel asked awkwardly, still holding onto Vittorino's hand. He wore thick gloves with a bone pattern on them. Something about them seemed familiar, yet he couldn’t remember.
Vittorino stood there for a second, a puzzled expression on his face, probably thinking. His blond hair was all messed up, sticking in every direction. Underneath his eyes were faded trails of blood going all the way down to his chin, probably from when Ryker hurt him.
“I’m…” He paused, “Not sure. But I might have a slight idea. Are there pipes by the walls in any direction?” Vittorino asked, not letting go of Gabriel's hand either.
Gabriel flashed his light in each tunnel. Left first. No pipes there. Now the right tunnel. No pipes there either. He stayed quiet for a second, listening. No sound in either one. None of the tunnels emitted any light, no unique smell. They look the exact same.
“No pipes anywhere. It's the same tunnel both ways.”
“We’re gonna die here Gabriel.” Vittorino said, squishing his hand tighter, reaching with his other to his face, rubbing the dried blood all around it.
“We’re not gonna die, we just need to think about it.” He was panicking just as much as Vittorino was, but maybe just once he had to be the responsible one. He had to calm down the other man, the air quality here was not good enough for him to panic. Slowly, still holding onto his hand, Gabriel led them both to the wall across from where they came in. “Sit, lets think”
Slowly both of them sat down, Gabriel by the left tunnel and Vittorino by the right. They sat in silence for a while, thinking. The flashlight was pointed towards where they came in, lighting up the long tunnel. It looked terrifying, the dark seemed to never end. Gabriel didn’t like looking into the dark, so he stared into his own shoes, quietly fidgeting with his watch. It said 8:11, but the fall must have broken it. the entire time they were here neither of the hands has moved once.
Could this be the end? They didn’t know where either of the tunnels went, and it could take hours to find out. What if it’s a dead end? They would have to turn around and walk all the way back. If Basilica led them to one dead end then she doesn’t want them out. Vittorino wasn’t in shape to walk for that long, to play her games. They had to pick the right one, but how? The tunnels looked identical. There was nothing to tell them apart.
“Do you remember Capri, Gabriel?” Vittorino asked. He was sitting close to Gabriel, closer than strangers would. His knees were tucked in by his arms.
“Capri…” Gabriel thought for a second. Yet another thing he’s supposed to know. But this time he knew something felt off. Just thinking about that name made his head hurt. Capri. Something familiar yet he couldn’t remember.
“Sounds familiar but I can’t put my mind to it.” He replied with a sigh.
Vittorino put his face on top of his knees, gabbing onto his head. “You don’t remember anything… Do you?” He started pulling on his hair. “Do you remember your Grandma’s house? How we used to walk to school together? The beach?” He was slightly shaking. “Do you remember Punta Ventroso? Accardi coming over in the summer? Anything?” Vittorino was tugging on his hair harder now, his face laying on top of his knees.
Gabriel didn’t know how to reply. Yes he didn’t remember. He didn’t know what he was supposed to remember. None of the names reminded him of anything.
“Do you remember?” Gabriel asked. Maybe he could lighten the mood.
"Of course I remember. I could never forget."
“Then tell me,” Gabriel asked, looking at Vittorino, who in return slightly lifted his head and looked in his direction. “Maybe then I could remember.”
Vittorino looked up into the hallway in front of him, staring into nothingness.
”I used to write you letters, you know? Every 2 weeks I would send a new one. I’d tell you everything that was happening, how things were going.” He looked down. “I never got a letter back. Thought maybe the address was wrong or you moved.”
Gabriel didn’t know how to respond. He stared at the blond man, who didn’t return his gaze.
“I still kept writing though. For 3 years.”
He sighed and looked in Gabriel's direction.
“You wanna know about Capri? I’ll tell you everything.”

Chapter Text
It was the last day of school before summer break. Vittorino felt thrilled just thinking of what was to come. Next year on this exact day he and Gabriel will finally graduate. Capri was beautiful, but there should be something past the endless sea. They had a plan, each their own. Gabriel wanted to become a policeman. He wanted to help the people, solve mysteries and bring justice. Vittorino wanted to be a painter. Honestly he didn’t want to leave Capri, the small island was home, all he could ever need. Gabriel though wanted to go, for his police training and Vittorino’s art school, and he was fine with following him. As long as they were together.
They have been friends for what seemed like eternity. Vittorino’s father was the local priest, and Gabriel's Grandma never skipped a single service. They were destined to become friends. And so they did. Every day they would spend together, going to the beach, Gabriel’s house, the main town or just anywhere on the island.
Even though he was probably going to be late, Vittorino walked towards Gabriel’s house instead of the school. Every day they walked to and from school together. The normally long boring journey felt so much better with a friend.
Gabriel’s house was the closest to the beach. It was a nice pastel red 2 bedroom cabin with big glass windows that were always open, letting in the fresh air and sunlight. The house was always well lit, either by the sun or the abundance of lamps. It was cozy, it felt lived in. He could say that was the reason they hung out at Gabriel’s house the most, but that would be lying. Vittorino’s house was always empty. It was cold, distant, unwelcoming, and didn't feel like home. His father was always at the church, which was connected to their house, and his mother… He didn’t know exactly where she was. One day she just packed her bags and left. He hasn’t heard from her since.
Vittorino knocked on the wooden door and waited. His school bag was light from the lack of heavy textbooks. All the exams were taken, all books returned. For the last week they have been watching TV and solving puzzles, nothing to worry about.
Gabriel’s grandma opened the door for him. She had short curly black hair and lots and lots of wrinkles. Ms Giordano always wore a long skirt underneath a flowy shirt,
“Oh Vittorino! Come right in!” She moved out of the way to let him pass. “Gabriel should be finishing breakfast. Come, let me give you some toast!” She grabbed his shoulders and led him into the kitchen.
Gabriel was sitting at the table finishing a piece of toast. He was looking out the window, his round chubby face and blue eyes lit up by early morning sunlight. His reddish blonde hair was messy, going in every direction.
As soon as Gabriel heard them coming his eyes lit up.
“TORI!! You're here!!!” He stood up and ran to hug Vittorino as if they hadn't seen each other for years. Tori was an embarrassing nickname only Gabriel used to him. Vittorino wasn’t a fan of nicknames, preferring his real name, but Gabriel was an exception.
“Come on you two, leave or you’re gonna be late” Gabriel’s grandma told them, hands on her hips. “Vittorino, grab a piece of toast. You’re basically just skin and bone”
He did just as she said, grabbing some toast as Gabriel put on his shoes. Vittorino wasn’t a fan of breakfast, but he wasn’t a fan of saying no to Gabriel’s grandma either.
Instead of grabbing his own bag Gabriel showed a pencil into his back pocket. He was wearing long shorts and a button up, on which he left the top few buttons open. His hair was still sticking in every direction. Vittorino’s blonde hair wasn't behaving well either, it kept curling up at the bottom no matter the length, even if he tried to style it.
Gabriel opened the front door and Vittorino followed close behind. It was around a 20 minute walk to school, but together it felt like a few seconds.
In what seemed like a moment they were already by the school. Together they walked through the familiar hallways into the same old classroom they have been going to for so long. The school was small, with barely 30 kids in each grade level.
Most of the kids were already sitting in their seats. The two walked towards the back of the class and sat in their assigned seats, Vittorino by the window and Gabriel one seat to the right of him. They were always seated together, all the teacher and students knew they were best friends.
As the teacher talked about summer safety and being responsible, Vittorino was staring out the window, lost in thought. Today Accardi, his other best friend, will come from Florence. Each summer Accardi and his father would come and live at Vittorino’s house for a few months. He couldn’t wait, it was like a long sleepover ALL of summer.
He kept staring out the window, not paying any attention to the class. Last summer was so fun, every single day they would go to the beach and hangout, build things, make campfires. The best thing they built, well Gabriel was mostly the one building, was a small tent on the cliffby the beach. It was made out of sticks and a few pieces of old cloth.
They spent most of the summer tending to the tent, defending it from neighborhood boys and fixing the walls after strong winds and storms. Both Vittorino and Gabriel promised Accardi to not work on the tent without him, which was hard. They both were not sure if the tent was even still there. It was pretty close to the beach, and for all he knew it could have been destroyed by a storm or local kids .
Vittorino was doodling on a piece of paper as the bell rang, signaling the end of the school year. Summer is starting! Quickly he put the paper and the pencil into his bag and stood up. Gabriel was already up, rushing him to get up faster.
“Toriiii come on, we are free! It’s summer!!” He was hopping from one foot to another, slowly moving farther away from Vittorino
“Wait up!” He yelled at Gabriel, running after him. Gabriel grabbed Vittorino’s bag as they rushed out of the classroom.
Outside the school kids were everywhere, celebrating, hugging and planning what they are going to do this summer. Instead of talking to anyone else the two walked away together, chit chatting about their summer plans. None of the other kids really hanged out with them, just giving them glances from the side and whispering. Lots of whispering. But they didn’t mind. They were each other's friends, not anyone else’s.
It didn’t take much time to walk back home. They passed the same streets and they did on the way there, hurrying to get to Gabriel’s house as soon as possible.
“Wanna go swimming?” Gabriel asked as he threw Vittorino’s bag on the floor by his bed.
Vittorino didn’t even have to answer, together they left and walked to the beach. He liked the walk and the descent towards the water. Gabriel's house was the closest in the city to the beach, so the walk wasn’t long.
Straight ahead was the staircase down towards the beach and to the left was a small forest. Somewhere in those trees was their tent, the one they were forbidden from seeing. Vittorino climbed down the stairs, following behind Gabriel who went ahead. As he reached the bottom of the staircase he hopped off, skipping a few steps. Gabriel was already standing on the rocky shore, taking off his shoes. Unlike Gabriel, Vittorino wore slippers, so he simply kicked them off and ran towards the light blue water.
He stepped into the icy water. It wasn’t that cold, the hot summer sun heated it up to a nice cool feel. Vittorino went in up to his knees, careful to not get his shorts wet.
Gabriel did the opposite, immediately running into the water, splashing everywhere. He was up to his stomach in a matter of seconds, not bothered by the cold water or the fact his clothes were wet.
He gently splashed some water in Vittorino's direction, the cold droplets landing on his face.
“Come on and get in before I make you!” He yelled in Vittorino’s direction, running up to him. He was awkwardly stumbling through the shallow water. Before he could reach the other boy, Gabriel slipped on the rocky sea floor and fell into the water head first, sending a giant splash onto Vittorino.
Despite the entirety of his front being soaked, Vittorino clenched his stomach in laughter, almost falling in the water himself. Gabriel wasn’t rushing to stand up, instead sitting in the blue water laughing even louder than Vittorino. Without warning he kicked Vittorino’s foot from underneath him, sending him flying onto his butt. He landed with a loud splash, the cold water surrounding him whole.
As soon as he could stand back up he started splashing water onto Gabriel’s face, who returned the favor. The two were giggling as water flew everywhere. They spent what seemed like hours playing in the water, either splashing around or just tramping through the shallow parts of water, enjoying each other’s company.
As the sun was starting to set, now being in the bottom quarter of the sky, the two had just left the water and were now resting along the shore. Vittorino was walking on the big rocks, trying to balance on one foot. Gabriel was laying on his back, letting the sun hit his face. Vittorino watched his friend from afar, the way his bangs fell onto his face, the way his wet shirt hugged his rounder body.
He didn’t want to go home, didn’t want to leave Gabriel’s side, not even for a moment. Maybe if he asked Gabriel would let him stay the night. Then, they could play soccer and Ms. Giordano will make some Risotto. His dad probably wouldn’t mind, it’s not like they had anything planned tonight.
Tonight… was something supposed to happen tonight? As the thought came back Vittorino stumbled on the rock, almost falling into the water.
”Accardi!”

Chapter Text
”Accardi!” He yelled towards Gabriel, who was a a couple rocks away. Gabriel looked at him with a puzzled expression.
”Accardi is coming today! He might already be here! We gotta go!” He spoke as he started running back towards the city. Gabriel was close but still behind, he wasn’t a fast runner.
Excitement came over Vittorino as he ran faster, not too fast so Gabriel could keep up but faster than he usually would. Accardi is coming! Their fathers have been friends since college, and every single summer Accardi and his father would come to Capri and stay with them! During the summer they were a trio, him Accardi and Gabriel. It was the highlight of the year, doing nothing and just hanging out with his two best friends.
Vittorino ran up to the old stone house next to the Church. He pulled at the heavy wooden door, barely opening it, and slipped in. Gabriel followed closely behind.
Despite it being mid-day, the house felt cold and empty. There was barely any light due to the lack of windows. And yet he could hear laughter and chitchat from the kitchen.
“There you are!” Said Vittorino’s father, his smile disappearing as his son walked into the kitchen.
Vittorino didn’t reply, scanning the room for his friend. At the old wooden kitchen table sat Accardi’s dad and his own father, drinking tea and talking. Yet Accardi was nowhere in sight.
“Accardi is in the bedroom” Mr. Florentino said, waving his hand in dismissal “Now go”
Vittorino ran into his bedroom, which was on the opposite side from the kitchen. There, Accardi sat at his desk, reading some sort of magazine. Vittorino ran up to his side, surprising the boy with a hug. Accardi turned towards him and hugged Vittorino back, both laughing. It has been so long since they saw each other!
“What HAPPENED to you?” Asked Gabriel, standing in the doorway and laughing.
Now that Vittorino noticed Accardi did look different, his usually curly purple hair was pin straight and styled to look like a mess, covering the entirety of his right eye. He was wearing mostly black and some dark red, his hands covered in stacks of bracelets.
Accardi rolled his eyes at Gabriel, still in a hug, but Vittorino could notice him giggling at Gabriel’s comment. “Unlike YOU I have SOME fashion sense” Accardi snapped back, though he was smiling. Letting go of Vittorino he walked up to Gabriel and gave him a hug too.
”How was the trip here? How is school? How is EVERYTHING?!” Vittorino asked while sitting down by his bed. Gabriel sat down next to him, and Accardi laid down on his back in front of them.
“Good good. No school talk anymore, it's summer!” He threw his hands up in the air.
”Where were you guys anyway?! I waited here alone for like… 2 hours!” Accardi yelled, rolling onto his stomach. His straightened hair fell out of his face, revealing both of his eyes. He had eyeliner on.
“We were at the beach,” Gabriel answered, moving his fingers through his wet strands of hair.
“Without ME?!” Accardi dropped his head onto the carpeted floors. Vittorino was pretty sure he wasn’t actually mad, just messing with them.
“Sorry sorry” answered Gabriel, petting Accardi’s head. “What time is it? We can probably still watch the sunset!”
Vittorino glanced at the old clock by his bed, 19:30. They still had around an hour until the sun was fully submerged by the sea. “Let’s go!” He yelled at the other boys.
Accardi lifted his head from the carpet, a tired expression on his face. He was being dramatic for no reason other than to make the other two feel bad. Vittorino watched from the doorway as Gabriel stood up and tried to pull Accardi by the foot, who instead pretended to have a tantrum. They weren’t little kids anymore, but together it felt like going back in time.
Gabriel and Accardi weren’t as close to each other as they were to him, but they were still close. Vittorino felt like he could tell everything to Accardi and he would never judge him. Gabriel though, there were some things he could never bring himself to tell.
After some struggling Accardi actually stood up and the three walked out of Vittorino’s room. Back through the same cold stone corridor and past the old kitchen. His and Accardis fathers were still there, still drinking tea and chatting. Accardi looked into the kitchen,
“We’re going to go watch the sunset” he said to his father, who in return waved his hand in dismissal. Accardi took that as a yes.
Together they left Vittorino’s house, and immediately it felt like a stone had been lifted off of his chest. Even with friends his house felt unwelcoming and cold. Gabriel led them though the small streets, using as many shortcuts as possible. They weren’t running, but walking at a speedy paste. Accardi was with Vittorino, and Gabriel was slightly ahead.
“So, how is everything? How is your dad?” Accardi asked, looking ahead.
“Everything is good.” Vittorino paused to think. “Father is also doing good. He’s usually busy so it’s nice seeing him home.”
Father never being home was an understatement. He actually was never home, only coming back late at night to sleep and leaving right after breakfast. They never spent time together, and at this point he couldn’t remember the last time they had a proper conversation.
“How is your life?” Vittorino asked in return.
“I mean now it’s amazing! It’s finally summer! Oh you don’t know how excited I am!!” Accardi answered, throwing his hands up in the air, many bracelets on his hands making pleasant rattling noises.
He put his hands back down. “This year at school was kinda horrible, they changed the uniforms and TRUST ME when I say how ugly they are.” He made an impression of someone throwing up, which Vittorino giggled at.
They were now passing the same street he would usually take to Gabriel’s house. This time instead of going left they kept going straight until the old staircase came into view. The sun was already almost in the water, they didn’t really have much time left.
Gabriel hurried down the stairs, and the others followed. The view was beautiful. The sky was a perfect blend of colors, patches of orange and yellow. He wanted to paint this view one day.
The boys walked closer to the shore towards a patch of rocks. Vittorino sat on one of the bigger rocks next to Gabriel, their legs brushing against each other. Yet Vittorino didn’t want to pull away, he felt in place. Gabriel didn’t pull away either, instead watching as the sun was absorbed by the water.
And just like that the sun was gone. The beautiful splash of warm orange and yellow colors slowly calmed down, turning into a mix of blues and purples.
They sat there in silence for a few more minutes, Accardi on his own rock and the two on theirs. Vittorino felt at peace, with his two best friends by his side. He didn’t want to leave, didn’t want this moment to end. But he was getting tired. He slightly rested his head against Gabriel’s shoulder, who in return put his own head on top of Vittorino’s. Vittorino closed his eyes. The sound of waves, fresh air and a friend nearby was making him feel at peace. He didn’t know how much time passed, time seemed to slow down.
“Ok are you two done? Can we go home now? It’s getting pretty cold out here” Accardi chipped in, breaking the silence.
And yet they didn’t move immediately, some silent agreement to stay close. There was nothing wrong with being close to a friend, right? Accardi was just overreacting. They weren’t ‘doing’ anything.
Gabriel was the first to move, lifting up his head to look at Accardi.
“Come to the cuddle pile”
“No thank you” Accardi replied, walking towards them.
Vittorino still had his eyes closed. He didn’t want to leave, didn’t want to go home. He wanted to stay here, at this beach, next to Gabriel and Accardi. If only he could stay here forever. He always wanted to paint this beach, the sun set and the waves. One day he will. He will bring his paints and canvas here and paint.
Accardi and Gabriel kept speaking about something, but he wasn’t paying attention.
“Also I think Tori is asleep” Gabriel chipped in, his voice in a slight whisper. Since Accardi stood up Gabriel surprisingly didn’t move much. The sun was probably set all the way now, maybe the stars were visible. He liked how the stars looked at Capri. Well he didn’t know how they looked anywhere else, but to be honest probably not as good as here.
“Well wake him up then, we can’t carry him up the stairs.” Accardi was not whispering back.
Gabriel gently poked him on the head and whispered, “Dude, wake up”
Vittorino slowly opened his eyes, pretending to wake up. Just like he predicted it was already dark outside. The stars were shining above the water, dancing on top of the waves.
“Come on guys let’s go.” Accardi rushed them.
Gabriel stood up first, fast and quick. He reached out his hand towards Vittorino, helping him stand. He didn’t need the help, but it felt nice knowing he cared. Accardi was already by the staircase, ready to climb back up. If Vittorino wasn’t practically raised at this same beach he would have struggled on the way up.
At the top of the cliff Gabriel had to turn right, and Vittorino and Accardi were supposed to go straight. Instead Gabriel stuck by their side, saying he’ll walk them half way. Despite it being dark outside, the people outside were not calming down. Local bars were still filled with people drinking. Teenagers were sitting on benches and talking. Summer has started.
Gabriel ended up walking them all the way home, chit chatting about their plans. Accardi’s dad is going to take them to the town center tomorrow, just for fun. Gabriel was supposed to come around 8 am to Vittorino’s house, and from there they will walk together.
“Byee! See you guys tomorrow!” Gabriel said as he hugged Vittorino goodbye. With that he walked away from the old church and soon disappeared out of view.
Accardi and Vittorino entered the building from the back, pushing the heavy door open. Their fathers were nowhere to be found, so they didn’t have to sneak around. Accardi grabbed a slice of bread from the kitchen as Vittorino set up a place for him to sleep in. Years ago when they were little kids Accardi used to sleep in his bed, but now that they are both older, Accardi has been demoted to the floor.
Vittorino threw a couple blankets and a pillow on the floor, arranging it in a bed-like position. He didn’t know where their spare mattress was, and father wasn’t home to ask, so for tonight this should do. He climbed into his own bed and grabbed a notebook from the bedside table. Just then Accardi came back into the bedroom, already in his pajamas. His eyeliner was gone, and his straightened hair started to curl back up at the bottom. He looked more familiar now.
Vittorino doodled in his notebook while Accardi got ready to sleep. He tried to sketch the sunset, and even without colors it looked pretty good. Maybe tomorrow he could sketch it on a bigger piece of paper, or maybe even a canvas if the church had some. That would be really cool.
“Can you turn the light off PLEASE?? I really want to sleep” Accardi complained, covering his eyes with his hands, who didn’t have bracelets anymore.
“Oh sorry, one second”
Vittorino put his notebook and pencil away, he can continue the drawing later. He turned off the small lamp on the table and laid down in bed.
For a while they laid there in silence, both thinking about their own things. Vittorino was excited for tomorrow, a full day of hanging out with his friends, painting, and going to the town center. He never really went there, it was mostly tourists and expensive shops where he could never afford anything.
“I came out to my dad.” Accardi said, staring at the ceiling.
“Wait actually?” He answered, the comment catching his off guard. He didn’t doubt Accardi would do it, but not so soon.
“Yeah.”
“Well how did he react?!” Vittorino asked, now sitting up in his bed, looking down at Accardi, who was giggling to himself.
“He said he always knew.” He quietly laughed, “I think he was lying though.”
Vittorino smiled to himself and laid back down in bed. He could so easily imagine Mr. Florentino and Accardi having the talk and then having a big laugh.
“Are you ever gonna come out?” Accardi asked.
The comment made the smile disappear off Vittorino’s face. “I’m… not sure” He would rather be set on fire than talk about that with his father. It’s not that he wouldn’t accept him,Vittorino knew he would, it’s just… he didn’t want to for some reason. He didn’t want father to be even more disappointed.
“Alright, goodnight!” Said Accardi, probably sensing the awkwardness. He turned to the side away from Vittorino.
“Night…”
He tried to get the thought out of his head, to focus on something else, but he just couldn’t. And only after a few hours and many prayers, long after Accardi fell asleep was he able to rest.
