Work Text:
If you had asked Miles Edgeworth five years ago what he thought of Phoenix, he would probably tell you that he found the defense attorney annoying. Often being late to trials and always shocked by evidence the prosecution provided was annoying enough for Miles, but Phoenix winning most of his cases despite the constant hitches on his part grated against Miles.
Miles had done his best to avoid Phoenix whenever he could, seeming him in trials every so often and on a few billboards scattered about town, but slowly warmed up to Phoenix whenever he stopped by his office to confer on a case or caught each other in the courthouse on the way to trials. Through sheepish grins and late nights at Phoenix’s office with greasy pizza, Miles eventually softened enough that he was not immediately taken aback when Phoenix asked him out, accepting in just a few short moments and even suggesting a restaurant they could go to.
Miles had been dating Phoenix for the last three years and had grown fonder of the man with each passing year together, though he did his best to hide that when they met in trial to varying degrees of success. In that time, Miles had been forced to wear hideous holiday sweaters twice, had loud Thanksgiving dinner debates seven times, and woken up to Phoenix kicking him in the gut too many times to count, but he regretted none of it.
That was why, just two weeks prior, he had gone shopping for an engagement ring.
It was nothing fancy, just a bit of silver with some tiny design to it since Miles did not want to splurge on something that Phoenix might not like, and had been kept on Miles’ person since the purchase for fear Phoenix would see it too early. That fear was heightened when it fell out of his jacket pocket in front of Phoenix’s best friend, Maya Fey, and Miles immediately swore her to secrecy. Maya Fey seemed to have kept her word, Miles could tell by the excited light that appeared in her eyes whenever they looked at each other, which happened quite often on the car ride that day.
It was the end of summer, the August heat finally dying down and allowing some proper time at the beach. Schools were back in session so families were not crowding the beach, making it the perfect time for the attorneys to push off their workload a while and enjoy a small vacation.
Since Phoenix had managed to get Trucy out of school, the day was filled with games of chicken in the ocean and trying to make three separate sand castles: one ravaged by a seagull searching for a sandwich Maya Fey had dropped, the second with its moat leaking back to the ocean, and the third half completed when the group ran off to look at a sea turtle.
Franziska had attempted to surf under Maya Fey’s guidance, leading to both of them plummeting in the water before even leaving the shallows and spluttering water, a scenario Miles was all too sure would happen. Apollo and Klavier had shown up a bit later, claiming to have given Athena their work and hanging around for an hour or two before wandering down the beach to a bar Klavier used to perform at.
Phoenix had taken Miles the opposite way as the sun began to set, Trucy staying behind at Phoenix’s request to help her aunts pack up. It was a beautiful walk, tall grass on their left swaying in the gentle breeze as the last auburn sunrays danced on the ocean waves, stars beginning to poke out amidst the storm clouds forming on the horizon. The two attorneys paused their walk about half a mile away from where they started, Phoenix making a horribly faux cough to slow Miles down.
Miles’ heart began racing as he saw his boyfriend drop to one knee, Phoenix pulling a ring from his pocket and clearing his throat. Before he could even get the first word out, the ring slipped from his fingers and hit the wooden planks they were walking on, and Phoenix immediately let out a yelp before burying his hands in the sand to find the ring.
Thunder rumbled over the water as Miles pulled his phone out and turned on the flashlight to help Phoenix see in the falling darkness. They crawled on their hands and knees for several minutes trying to find the ring, only turning up half a dozen bottle caps and three different wrappers, before the rain started to fall and they had to abandon their search for the safety of the car.
Physically dragging Phoenix back down the beach, Miles heard the man let out a defeated cry, “It’s just my luck to drop the ring when I’m proposing! And the storm is just a slap in my unlucky face!”
“It will be fine, Wright, I will pay to have it replaced.” Miles said, opening his cargo pocket, “In the meantime, you should wear mine.”
Despite the lack of good light, Miles could tell Phoenix’s face lit up from the gasp he let out as the ring slid onto his finger and could only grin when Phoenix crashed a kiss to his lips.
