Lines We Cross

Summary:

she was always the black sheep—the one who dropped out, who chose any path over the life her family mapped out. han-byeol’s eldest sister became a celebrated ceo, but byeol chose art, and art never paid the bills. to keep up appearances, she juggled odd jobs, drifting from one paycheck to the next—until a bad decision tied her to a loan shark and left her family with no choice but to cast her out.

just when she thought things couldn’t spiral lower, there was him. detective hwang jun-ho—the cop who always caught her at the wrong time, warning her how thin the line was between freedom and ruin. he never arrested her, never truly let her go either. pity, curiosity, maybe something else—it lingered, turning every encounter into a push and pull of mistrust and something they could never name.

then came the offer. a chance to erase her debt, to start again. but the price was her life on the line inside the games, where survival was the only currency. and when she came face to face with a familiar figure inside those walls, byeol realized her fight for freedom might cost more than she could ever pay.

mature content ahead.

she gave it a try. she closed her eyes.
she didn't know how it'd feel

before we dive into the main story, i want to give a proper heads-up. to make sure the pacing feels natural and the emotional beats land the way they should, this fic is going to start with a prelude section. this part of the story will take its time exploring the backstory between kim han-byeol and hwang jun-ho — how they met, the connection they built, and all the messy, complicated, beautiful, and sometimes painful layers that exist between them.

this prequel is here for a reason. it's meant to make the story feel grounded before everything starts to unravel later on. by taking the time to build who they are and what they mean to each other, the moments that come after will hit harder, feel deeper, and carry more weight. it's not just filler — it's the foundation.

if you've read my other fic, you already know i'm a huge fan of slow burns. i love giving characters room to breathe, to make mistakes, to grow, and to fall apart before they ever get close to putting themselves back together. this story will follow that same approach — it's going to take its time, it's going to ache, and it's going to feel real.

if you came across this fic because of in other words, or if you just happened to stumble on it by chance — thank you. thank you so much for choosing to read it, for giving it a shot, and for being here. whether you've been following my writing for a while or you're brand new, i hope you stick around for the full ride. it genuinely means the world to me that you're here.

that said, i do want to be transparent about what to expect content-wise. this fic will explore dark themes and mature subject matter, including moments of gore and violence. certain chapters will contain heavy or potentially triggering scenes, and all of those will be clearly tagged and labeled beforehand so you know exactly what you're walking into.

still, please consider this your general warning — this story will get dark at times. it's not constant, but it's there.

reader discretion is strongly advised.
