Augustine's Error

Summary:

Saint Augustine once said that “He who is jealous is not in love," but is that statement really true? The moment Reo sees the chocolates Nagi was gifted for Valentine's Day, it feels as if his heart turned to ice. He should be happy for Nagi, so why does he feel this way?

Work Text:

“Nagi! Sorry for being late!” Reo yells, swinging open the door to Hakuho roof.

Reo is meeting up for lunch with Nagi, but was a little delayed due to it being Valentine’s Day today. On his way there,  he was mobbed by girls giving him chocolate, each desperate to get a piece of the school prince's affection. He just barely managed to get them off his back so he could get up here.

“Nagi? Are you sleeping up there?” Reo calls out to the top of the roof, the place where Nagi most likes to game and nap.

When he gets no response, Reo shakes his head affectionately and begins climbing up the ladder to wake his lazy treasure. However, once he’s up there, he still doesn’t spot Nagi. Maybe when I didn’t show up, he left? Reo thinks. Just as he is about to make his way down the ladder, he hears the door open below and sees a white haired figure stroll onto the rooftop.

“Nagi! There you are! Come up here, I have some good-looking chocolates I want to feed you,” Reo beckons as Nagi climbs the ladder to meet him. Nagi takes a seat right next to Reo, close enough to where their shoulders brush against each other.

“Where were you?” Reo smiles, nudging Nagi’s side with his elbow. “Did you fall asleep in class again?”

“No, I was getting this.” Nagi pulls out a small heart-shaped box from his bag, presumably filled with chocolates.

“Huh?” Reo gawks. Normally, expressing shock over someone receiving chocolates is considered rude. Luckily, Nagi is not one for social convention.

“Yeah, some girl gave it to me,” Nagi sighs. “What a hassle. Does this mean I have to give something back?”

“No!” Reo yells out without even thinking.

“No?” Nagi tilts his head in confusion. “Okay, I won’t give anything. I just thought you were supposed to do that.” Nagi pulls out the croissant he brought for lunch from his bag and begins to eat it, content with Reo’s answer.

Why did I say no? Reo thinks, confused by his own actions. He was right, you are supposed to give something back. He doesn’t know much about etiquette or girls, though. He’d listen to anything I tell him. The thought makes him feel quite guilty.

I guess I should give him a proper answer. But the thought of Nagi giving someone chocolates is… ugh! The idea makes Reo anxious and he doesn’t know why. Obviously, he is not jealous that Nagi got chocolate from a girl. Reo’s gotten over fifty so far today. What could it be then?  Is it because if he has a girlfriend, he will be too busy to practice soccer? Yeah… Yeah! That's probably it! Still, even if I am worried about that, I can’t give him bad advice. I’m his friend.

“Sorry, what I meant to say was, what you give back depends on how you feel about her,” Reo says. “For me, I am just going to give each of the girls who gave me something small in return, to show my appreciation for their hard work, but nothing too big to imply I’m interested.”

“I’ll just do the same thing then,” Nagi decides.

“Come on! You’re not even going to consider it a bit?” Reo teases. “How cold-hearted.” Behind this teasing is immense relief Reo hopes Nagi doesn’t notice. Him giving small thank you chocolates wouldn’t be too bad.

“Hmm… She's in my class, so I remember her from there. Other than that, I don’t really know anything about her,” Nagi says. “I guess if I know nothing about her, it means she isn't really a huge pain, though.”

Wait. Is Nagi actually considering it because I called him cold-hearted? And what’s with “she isn’t really a huge pain”? “Not a pain” is the praise you said about me! Reo thinks, gritting his teeth.

“Do you think she’s cute?” Reo asks. This is perfect! Nagi has never taken an interest in girls before. He’ll say no, and I’ll be a good friend for helping him with his troubles.

“I mean, I guess she is what guys typically find cute? She has big boobs, and I know a lot of guys like that,” Nagi remarks indifferently. “It’s cool she gave me chocolates, I guess?”

Cool? Cool is also what Nagi calls me! Now he’s calling some random girl he just met! What the hell! What’s next? First, he says she’s not really a pain, then he says she’s cool, then she’ll be taking Nagi from me.

“Maybe you should give it a shot with her, then,” Reo says icily. He hurriedly gathers his stuff together and gets up to leave.

“Huh? Are you leaving, Reo?” Nagi asks, confused. “We haven't had lunch yet.”

“I’m not hungry,” Reo mumbles, making his way towards the ladder.

“Didn’t you want to feed me chocolate?” Nagi pouts, doing his best puppy dog eyes at Reo. This move backfires, as Reo begins imagining a future where Nagi makes that needy face at someone other than him.

“Have your girlfriend feed them to you,” Reo retorts, swiftly making his way off the ladder and out the door.

Nagi is not the best at social cues, but even he can tell something is wrong. Reo’s typically sunny and fierce personality has been replaced with a cold and brisk one. Not only have his passes and goals been brutal today, they are not connecting as naturally as they normally do, and the frown on Reo’s face has been present throughout all of practice.

“Are you okay, Reo?” Nagi asks once they’re alone for their one-on-one practice.

“I’m fine,” Reo quickly responds. He sets the ball down on the field to practice free kicks. He walks ten feet away before running towards the ball. “Maybe it’s just the sugar from all those chocolates!” Reo hisses, kicking the ball full force and sending it violently into the goal.

He definitely doesn’t look fine, Nagi thinks. From what he can tell, Reo looks like he is on the edge of beating someone up or bursting into tears, and he doesn’t know which is more likely. Is Valentine's Day that stressful for Reo? He guesses being the school prince isn’t as easy as Reo typically makes it out to be. Nagi knows he wouldn’t be able to handle the task on any day, Valentine’s Day or otherwise. Maybe he just needs to go home and relax.

“I’m tired, Reooooo.” Nagi plops down on the ground dramatically and holds his arms out to Reo. “Let’s go hoooome.”

“Ok, I’m going to stay here and practice a bit more. Baaya will pick you up and drop you off at your place.” Without any nagging to stay longer, Reo walks over to the bench to grab his phone.

“Wait, Reo, are you sure you’re okay with me leaving?” Nagi asks. Is Reo really going to let me go without arguing for me to shoot a couple more goals?

“Go get changed. I already texted her. She’ll be here in 15.” Reo glumly adds, “ You should enjoy your Valentine's Day.”

With that, Nagi heads off to the locker room. I guess Reo just needs some time alone, he thinks while changing.

Throughout the car ride, Nagi’s mind is stuck on how Reo acted throughout the day. He was so upset, he idly thinks while looking out the window. Nagi goes to take out his phone, hoping to distract himself from Reo. However, as he searches his pockets and bag, he realizes that his phone is missing. Hmmm… the last place I saw it was...

“Baaya, I left my phone in the locker room. Can you drive me back?” Nagi asks. Baaya nods, turning the car around and heading back towards Hakuho.

As he walks past the soccer field towards the locker room, he notices it is empty. I guess Reo is done practicing, too, Nagi thinks. Maybe if he feels better, he can drop off his bags of chocolates with Baaya and we can go home on his bike together. That’d be nice, Nagi thinks.

He enters the locker room and hears the sound of running water coming from the showers. He’s about to announce that he left his phone and ask Reo if he wants to go home together, but is stopped when he hears the sound of crying.

Specifically, he hears Reo crying, a sound he knows from many emotional movie nights together. Nagi knows the tears Reo is crying now are likely not from a sappy movie, though. Nagi forgets about his phone and walks right toward the source of the noise.

“Reo?” Nagi asks, eyes widening at the sight of a naked prince sitting under a running shower with his head down and his knees brought to his chest.

“Nagi?” Reo sniffles, looking up, shocked at the new visitor in the locker room. "What are you doing here? Weren’t you picked up?”

“I left my phone,” Nagi explains. “I came back for it, but then I heard you. What’s wrong, Reo?”

“None of your business. Leave,” Reo says between sobs. Nagi walks away, and Reo lowers his head once more to continue crying. He doesn’t look back up until he hears footsteps pitter-patter closer to him in the shower.

“Nagi?” Reo says, shocked by the naked Nagi Seishiro standing in front of him. “I told you to leave. Why are you naked?”

“You’re naked,” Nagi retorts, getting on his knees so he is on Reo’s level. Warm water rains down on both of them from above.

“I was showering,” Reo huffs. He tries to wipe away his tears and look back down, hoping to avoid looking at Nagi.

“It looked like you were crying, so I am comforting you,” Nagi explains. He grabs Reo’s face and moves it up to meet his gaze.

“I don’t need comforting.” Reo pushes Nagi’s hand away from his face and tries to get up, but is stopped by Nagi placing a hand on either side of the wall next to Reo, preventing him from getting away.

“I can tell you’re upset,” Nagi says.

“Ugh… Go comfort your girlfriend instead,” Reo snips. Nowhere to go, Reo sits there, arms crossed, with a frustrated look on his face.

“Huh? My girlfriend? You said that earlier, too. Are you talking about the girl who gave me chocolates?” Nagi questions. “She’s not my girlfriend. Why would I comfort her? I don’t even know her.”

“But you said you were going to give something back to her,” Reo frowns. Wait… Is this what Reo is upset about? Why?

”Yeah, I wasn’t going to give her love chocolates though. It would be the same appreciation chocolates you give girls,” Nagi explains. “I am not interested in her.”

This explanation falls flat with Reo, who looks back at Nagi with a grumpy face similar to a spoiled child who doesn’t get what they want. He’s kind of cute like this, Nagi thinks. Regardless of not knowing Reo’s reasoning, with a face like that, Nagi would give in to whatever Reo wanted.

“I was just going to give her chocolate because I remembered you told me to appreciate our fans and worry about our reputation for when we are soccer stars,” Nagi reassures. “I don’t care about my reputation though. I don’t have to give her anything at all.”

“Really?” Reo asks. His face is angled down and he flashes big, pleading eyes at Nagi with a cute, small pout.

Nagi’s throat goes dry from the sight. All he can manage is a nod in response.

Reo shakes his head.“Ugh… No, you probably should give something small back,” He groans. He brings his hand to his forehead, as if in anguish. “I wish you hadn’t accepted them in the first place.”

“I’m sorry. Do you want me to give them back? I can give them back to her tomorrow,” Nagi proposes.

“No, no. That’s even crueler than not giving her back chocolates. It’s just…” Reo trails off dejectedly. He bites his lip and knits his eyebrows, as if he’s nervous about what he wants to say.

“It’s just what?” Nagi asks. At this point, he has fallen deep within Reo’s spell. Whatever Reo wants to say, he’ll listen.

“You’re my treasure and I don’t want to share.”

“Huh?” Nagi’s brain short-circuits from Reo’s words, and his face begins to overheat. The reason Reo is upset is that he wants me all to himself?

“I guess there is nothing I can do,” Reo says with a heavy heart. “More and more people are going to be enamored by you as we pursue our World Cup dream. I can’t be a selfish king and hoard my treasure for myself.”

What is Reo talking about? Nagi thinks. Other people taking his place? I’m the one who told him I want to be spoiled for the rest of my life. Who did he think that statement was about?

Nagi moves his hands to gently grab either side of Reo’s face, making sure their eyes are locked. “They can desire me all they want, but you’re the only one who can have me, Reo,” Nagi says earnestly. “I’m yours.”

“N-Nagi!” Reo stammers, face heating up in Nagi’s hand. “Don’t say things like that! You’re making me blush!” Even though Reo tells Nagi to stop, he has a big smile plastered on his bright red face.

Nagi, too, is blushing from his statement. Saying something like that is really embarrassing, he thinks. If Reo is smiling again, though, I don’t care too much about being embarrassed. Unable to control his relief, Nagi lunges forward and wraps his arms around Reo.

“Nagi, we’re naked!” Reo squeaks. He tries to push Nagi away, but he will not relent.

“I have Reo deficiency,” Nagi grumbles. “You ignored me half the day and were busy the other half getting chocolates. Valentine’s Day is rough for me, too.”

“Fine,” Reo relents. He hugs Nagi back with one hand and cards his hand through Nagi’s hair with the other.

“Is Reo all min,e too?” Nagi asks with his head buried in Reo’s neck. The vibrations of his voice send a pleasurable shiver down Reo’s spine.

Nagi feels Reo nod against him in their embrace, too embarrassed to answer outright.

Nagi’s heart soars from Reo’s shy answer, driving him to pounce on Reo. He pins Reo’s hands on either side of his head and hovers over Reo, with his legs situated between his partners. He looks down at Reo with eyes full of desire.

Uh oh, Reo thinks. Now he has a whole new problem. It’s not that he doesn’t want to do anything, but today has already been a rollercoaster of newfound emotions. He doesn’t know if he can handle any ‘new experiences’ that Nagi looks very ready to try. “N-Nagi! You—”

”Seishiro-sama, are you alright?  Have you found your phone?” Baaya calls out from outside the locker room. Nagi’s grip loosens a bit and looks up in the direction of Baaya’s voice.

“He found it! We’ll be out sec!” Reo yells, slipping out of Nagi’s grasp while he is distracted.

“Reooooo, no fair!” Nagi pouts at his partner, who is now grabbing his towel and wrapping it modestly around his waist.

“Come on, let’s get dressed. If you come over to my house, I’ll feed you the chocolates I picked out for you earlier.” Reo beckons, holding a towel out to Nagi.

“Fiiiiiine,” Nagi sighs, taking the towel in his hand and heading to the locker room to change back into their clothes.

“Should we watch a movie too?” Reo asks. “We have a lot of chocolates to try.”

“Eternal sunshine of a spotless mind?” Nagi suggests.

“Are you trying to make me cry again today? Geez!” Reo jokes. “How about we watch The Truman Show?”

“Your favorite?” Nagi replies.

“Yeah, we've seen it a bunch before, so we don’t have to focus on the movie too much!” Reo says.

“So then we can focus on where we left off?” Nagi says, arms encircling Reo from the back. They are clothed now, but Reo can’t help but still be flustered.

“No, you perv!” Reo lightly pushes off Nagi. “I meant we had a taxing day and may not want to fit any new information into our brains! Not so you can pounce on me!”

“Truman Show it is,” Nagi says, ignoring Reo's last statement.

“Just so we can relax, right?” Reo tries to confirm.

Nagi purposely focuses on a game on his phone to avoid Reo's question. "Let's get out of here, Reo," he says, exiting the door.

"Hey, don’t ignore me!” Reo huffs, grabbing his school bag and his huge bag of chocolates, chasing Nagi out the door.

Notes:

Nagi: Ah, Reo just called me cold-hearted for not considering the girl who gave me chocolates. I guess I should not be a complete jerk, so he isn't angry. I’ll say whatever nice things I can come up with about her to make him happy.

Reo: He called her not a pain… and said her giving him chocolates was cool. He likes her!!!! He wants to be with her!!!! She’s stealing him from me! What the hell?!?

...

I know jealous Reo isn't popular with the fanbase, mostly because some writers like to turn Reo into an awful monster when writing him jealous. However, I think I struck a nice balance between jealous and adorable. Reo was so cute in this piece, and I really like how it turned out.

I love writing jealous characters, especially when they have nothing to be worried about because the other person absolutely adores them. Originally, this was for white day, but I wanted to wait for the dust to settle on the Nagi centered chapters of Blue Lock before I finished the fic, hence why it is coming out so late!
