Chapter Text
Being an idol.
Being in the spotlight.
All eyes focused on you.
Popularity.
Hatsune Miku was sure that was the dream of almost all of the lit up eyes and excited voices that came watch her perform. Since she had started singing, it was certain she would go far. And she did.
But sometimes, she wondered if she had got too far.
Being a celebrity was great, sure.
But, sometimes…
Lights were too bright. Almost all the time, they hurt her eyes.
Her fans, as much as she loved their adimiration, were very loud. So loud her head hurt. If she wasn’t performing, she was sure she would drop dead any moment.
The clothes they would tell her to use made her skin itch like hundreds of ants were biting her.
She didn't even had time for herself or do the things she liked to do anymore.
She wouldn't go where she wanted now. She had to be watched, monitored, like a child.
A photoshoot here, an interview there.
Always having to look good for whoever was watching.
Always smiling for the camera.
Always picture perfect.
It hurt.
Her fame rose up, while she was falling down.
But she needed to do this, didn’t she?
“Ms. Hatsune. Get ready. The show starts in 10 minutes.”
Sighing, she sat up and grabbed her brush, combing her hair one last time. The movement was quite soothing to her. She didn’t know why, but it was.
Except it wasn’t as soothing as when someone did it.
Oh, how she just wanted to run away to her girlfriend’s arms and eat the leek-baguette sandwich they would make when they had a bad day…
As her guards led her to the backstage, she found two familiar faces there, that could bring her some comfort.
Kagamine Rin and Len, her fellow vocaloids and long-time friends. She had known them since she started her career. Len was looking in a mirror, adjusting his hair using a small brush, while Rin was looking away, probably zoning off, until she noticed Miku, quickly adjusting her bow and clothes and waving at her.
“Miku! Hi!” She excitedly said.
“Hey Rin. How are you?” The teal haired girl approached her friend slowly. “Nervous for the show?”
“Oh, a little! With all those people and stuff, you know…” She trailed off a little, appearing nervous. “But… I know I can do it. What about you? “
“Me? Uh…Of course not! Why would I be? ” Miku blurted out. She knew that Rin looked up to her a lot, so she didn’t wanna look like a mess in front of her.
Looking at her, blue eyes shining and cheeks going pink, Rin said: “Woah, Miku… It's amazing how you can be so calm with this huge amount of people watching and all of those bright lights! Meanwhile I need some minutes to calm down just to face the audience! "
Miku looked away.
Yeah. Right.
“Hey, Len, won't you get out of your DAMN phone and talk to-”
Before Rin could finish, a loud voice, startling Miku, spoke from the loudspeakers.
“AND NOW, THE MOMENT YOU'VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR SO LONG… “
Her time had come.
“Ms.Hatsune. No time for talking. The show is about to start. “
Taking a deep breath, she forced a smile to Rin, waving her goodbye and wishing her good luck, as she stepped into the stage.
Immediately, she was hit with a thousand bright lights, flashing phone cameras, screams of admiration and happiness every second, and the same voice from before, now somehow even louder, releasing a throbbing pain from her ears to her head:
“MEET HER, THE ONE AND ONLY, HATSUNE MIKU! “
The once circulating colorful lights were now focused on her.
The puffy blue and white with black details dress she had to wear had started to itch like the world was ending.
2 and a half hours of this.
Her body and brain were already screaming, begging for her to run away from this hellhole, and her eyes were already producing tears.
The teal-haired girl used every remaining energy in her body to force all of that down and bring up that cheerful and carefree attitude that she needed for this type of thing.
It was gonna be a long show.
It was simple.
Put the pan in the stove. Light it up. Wait until the soup is done. Turn it off. Take it to the table.
Yet, Teto couldn't do it.
She had to wander off, check her sleeping cat, look out the window in case her girlfriend was coming to stay over, or see the rain.
Why was she this way? Why couldn't she not get distracted?
Sighing, she (tried) to remember all the things her girlfriend taught her that day.
“Ugh!”
“Relax, Tets. Getting distracted is normal. Just don’t wander away from it, sweetie.”
“But sometimes, I feel like I can’t do it, Mimi…”
“... Look, I know how hard it’s to focus, Baguetto. So, let me tell you something I do: I wander off physically, but the object is always there, in my mind, y’know?”
“...I…Think I got it?”
“Another tip: Think about what will happen if you leave it out for too long. Then, your mind will always remind you of it, and soooo… Got it?"
"Mhm."
"Good. Now, c'mon, that soup won't make itself, will it?"
"Honestly, I wish it did."
As she looked down on the pan, she noticed it was already good to go. Huh. Maybe the soup actually could make itself.
Finally, her dinner was done. Meat, potato, eggs, carrots and some leek. Just enough to last for, at least, 2 or 3 days.
She grabbed a plate and poured down some, the smell soothing her senses. Putting it down, she got a spoon and a piece of baguette to eat with it.
The rain started to slowly thicken up. “I hope the power doesn’t go out because of it.” Teto mumbled. Suddenly, her cat, Baguette, stirred up and stretched. “Hehe. Finally woke up, eh, sleepyhead? “ The cat’s green eyes diverged to her, seeming to wonder why she was laughing to herself - and also standing randomly in between the kitchen and the living room.
Great. She’d done it again.
Suddenly, her phone, on the counter, rang. The alarm she set up for Miku’s show.
“Hm. I’m not living with my mom anymore…” She started down at the plate, and then at the little table near the couch in the living room. “Welp! Might as well!” Taking her plate, spoon and bread to the couch, Baguette following her, Teto had a slight hop in her step.
Seeing her girlfriend perform was always amazing. Sure, she did want her inside her place instead of seeing her on the stage, but whatever.
Turning the TV on, putting on the channel that would broadcast the show, with Baguette by her side, Teto got comfy.
She smiled as Miku appeared on the stage, blue and white puffy dress with details, waving at the audience, smiling.
But something was wrong with that smile. She couldn’t put a finger on it, but something certainly was off.
Notes:
1.187 words.
Not so bad for the first chapter, eh?
I really, REALLY struggled with Miku. I don't know why, but she's the reason this took 4 and half days to publish. And her segment was the one I edited the most, having a total of 5 edits and 2 'start from scratch' moments.
Teto, meanwhile, did give a hard time, but not as much as Miku. I struggled a lot writing the start of her segment and the flashback, but the rest went smooth as a newly installed window! The end part was my favorite!

Chapter Text
When the lights went out and the crowd seemed to quiet down, Miku released a shaky breath. Finally, it was over.
The hours and even days she was able to do whatever she wanted, without any responsibilities have always been gratifying to her, ever since she was a teenager.
With her career, they only became more precious to her. Those were the moments where she would be free to take a breath, stim,do things like she used to.
And if the time was enough, she would go to local parks and admire nature, buy things at the little stores she saw, and even watch groups of her fans interact (something was soothing about that).
But her favorite thing to do was going to her girlfriend’s two store small-yet-comfortable house, seeing her cat Baguette, help her around, and even try to convince their friend Neru to hang out with then.
She couldn't wait to go there.
“Miku! Get your ass over here! We gotta prepare for the meet and greet! Remember? “
Oh.
Oh no.
All her plans for her ‘free time’ were immediately squashed like ants who happened to pass by some feisty children on their way to their hill.
Meet and greet means people. People means LOTS of people. A crowd.
Crowd means hundred of noises. Hundred of noises means loud. Loud means overwhelming. Overwhelming means her worst fear would come true.
The tears she swore that weren't gonna appear anymore were already making their way to her eyes and her legs were already weak, almost as if they were mocking her.
Fuck!
“Coming, Len! No need to be so pushy! “
Her face hurt from how much force she was putting in her ‘smile’. She tried to swallow her tears, as they tried to rise even more.
Making her way to where the yellow haired boy was, her fingers started pressing hard on her skin, and lightly scratch it. Miku started at them like they just caused the death of her loved ones.
She wanted to go deeper.
But she couldn't. For the sake of her fame. For the sake of her friends.
For the sake of her girlfriend.
“Hey!... “ Trying to brush it off, the disturbed girl waved.
Rin was talking excitedly to Len about something, and he was nodding his head in response, sometimes talking back almost as excitedly. Near them stood a girl, almost as old as Miku, with pink, long straight hair, and eyes almost as blue as hers. Megurine Luka.
Their attention almost completely immediately shifted to Miku.
“Hey Miku! “ Rin ran up to her, something shining in her eyes. “You did amazing! It's like you had known the lyrics of each song and every move since you were born! Like… You were the goddess of music. “ She looked away on that last phrase, biting her lip and blushing lightly pink.
Len, for some reason, smirked at that.
“Yeah, you were so good Mi!” Luka chimed in, almost as affectionate as Rin was.
‘Mi’.
Something shifted in her when that nickname came out of her mouth. Like it sounded wrong. Like another person was meant to say that.
“Miku? Is everything alright? “ Luka said, concern within her voice.
“Yeah, yeah! Just zoned out! I'm okay! “ Miku responded as normal as she could. That seemed to calm down Luka. All those hours practicing in front of the mirror finally were showing effects.
“Anyways, do you… Maybe wanna sit next to me at the meet and greet? “ Like Rin, Luka looked away and blushed. “Not forcing you, of course… “
“... Okay! I don't see why not! “ Miku responded. Why were they behaving so weird?
Luka seemed happier than she showed.
A cough was heard from behind them. Len was with his arms crossed, looking annoyed. “Are we going or what? “
“I don't know why you’re so keen on going, Len, considering how your fans are… “ Rin snickered.
And so, the group went.
The screaming and chattering of people could be heard outside. She was not even close to where they were, and she already wanted to turn back and race to Teto's house, eat the food she would make with Teto, play with Teto's cat, sleep in Teto's bed, and rest on Teto's short yet comfortable arms.
She was pathetic and selfish, wasn't she? Many fans were excited to see her in person, her friends were loving having her around, and all she was thinking about was running away and never returning.
So, she kept on, even though she didn't want to.
Arriving at the place, she saw the other members of her group, Kaito and Meiko. The brown haired was laughing hard at something the deep blue haired man said, which in exchange was smiling and blushing.
That reminded her of when Teto would make bad jokes sometimes to calm her down.
She was seeing Teto everywhere now. Oh, what love does to someone.
She felt a hand pushing her arm and making her sit on a chair near a table. She looked, and it was Luka.
Oh yeah, she promised to sit with her. She shot a small smile at her, receiving one back.
At Luka’s left, Rin was zoning off, and looked at Miku, but quickly looked away. She looked mad.
Miku looked at the items on the table. A water bottle, some shirts, blue balloons, plushies, and even backpacks and pencil cases. All with her face and name on them. The only normal thing was a black pen placed in front of her, most probably to autograph whatever her fans presented to her.
A kind of metal gate spread before her, painted in blue.
She grabbed the pen, and spun it around, as she counted seconds on the clock on the wall on her left.
Counting how many seconds she had left.
Suddenly, the gates opened up. Miku, distracted, got hit on the face with the light. Millions of lit up eyes looked excitedly at her and the other vocaloids, holding out various things. A huge line of people stood before her.
There was some sort of barrier to prevent the fans from coming too close. She thanked whoever came up with that idea.
She sighed, and it started. She, like an actor puts on makeup to hide their face marks, put on that ‘second personality’. Cheerful, outgoing, always kind and sometimes sassy.
“Hello there! “ She screamed out to stick to her ‘mask’.
Squeals, more screams, chatter, and even music. The desire to cover her ears with her hands was massive. She tapped her feet underneath the table, hoping no one would hear her.
Suddenly, she felt something being glued on her arm. She looked, and it was a pink sticky note. With two handwritings on it.
Miku, you seem… off today. Is everything alright?
-Luka
Miku, you ok? We barely talked, I'm worried :(
-Rin.
Ah, great. People worrying about her. Just what she needed right now.
She looked at both and shot them a smile. The most cheerful-looking one she could make.
That took so much of her she was sure she needed at least 2 days to recover.
But her attention had to quickly shift to her fans. She just had to do some small talk, sign some things and maybe take some photos.
It was that simple. At least, it seemed to be.
The first thing she signed was a poster, handed by a 15 year old-looking girl, that reminded her of when she was at that exact same age. Oh, to go back.
Her fans were in between girls like that and some middle aged people. There was even a large dude who asked her to sign a plushie.
Everything was fine, except for the noise. She could handle it.
Or so she thought.
Out of nowhere, a men who seemed to be in their late twenties approached her. All dressed from feet to head with her merch like some kind of armour. It was okay, nothing new.
Until he came way too close to Miku. Je smiled at her (his teeth were so yellow she thought if there was a toothbrush of her to give to him) and started talking out stuff about ‘true love’, ‘soulmates’ and how ‘she was meant to be his’.
She wasn't listening. She felt like couldn't. And she didn't want to, either.
He only got closer to her every time he spoke. And he spoke louder, with a love-sick tone. But it was not the kind that would make your heart flutter. It was dripping with poison.
She felt very, very uncomfortable.
Where were her guards when she needed them?
“So, my damsel, will you leave your group “ He said it as if were a disease he prayed not to catch. “And come with me to live your happy ending? “
Miku was almost sure she'd have a meltdown right there. Her worst fear was steps away from becoming true.
“Uhm… Sir, I'm not sure I understand… You are making me uncomfortable… Can you leave? “ She said, like she was trying to climb up a mountain while an avalanche was happening. “Please.” She said that bit almost in tears.
He looked at her for what felt like an eternity.
She was shaking, mumbling desperate pleas under her breath.
And he laughed.
“Oh, you, don't play hard to get. “ He grabbed her arm. Hard.
Her heart was beating like she had run as far as a continent. Two times.
Her whole body was trembling.
Her eyes were producing tear after tear, and they wouldn't stop soon.
The crowd started making more noise, rushing to the scene.
Her ears hurt like a thousand wasps were inside it, stinging and buzzing.
That was the last straw.
She needed to get away.
Not even thinking first, Miku ran. Like she had never before. The other vocaloids called her (at least she thought they did) but she, for sure this time, wasn't turning back.
Fuck the show. Fuck the meet and greet. Fuck her reputation. Fuck her career.
She ran to her dressing room, almost knocking down the door with her name written in shiny blue lines and a photo of her with that ‘million dollar smile’.
On the hanger, sat a small bag of hers, brown with golden embroidery, good to go out in public with. She grabbed it, and quickly stuffed her phone, her headphones and a cat plush with a red heart embroidered on it she often brought as a comfort object.
She then went to her closet, as stable as she could, and grabbed a gray hoodie big enough to cover most of her body.
Before leaving through the ‘private door’ (a door that took them through an out-of-view route outside), she quickly typed two messages to her girlfriend:
“Teto”
“I'm comin over”
Teto felt like the world was ending in explosions and acid rain outside.
Her TV had broadcasted it all. From the first note Miku had sung, from her meltdown.
The red-haired short woman just stood there, with her mouth open, spoon in hand and soup stains in her face, shocked. Even Baguette, who was sleeping in her lap, now was wide awake, as if he also knew what was happening.
The rain outside slowly started developing into a storm. Just like Teto herself.
She wanted to punch that guy until she saw his bones. She wanted to go there and comfort Miku. She wanted to scream.
But a “Oh fuck. “ Was all she could say.
To add more into the pile, her phone vibrated with 2 notifications.
She checked and…
“Teto”
“I'm comin over. “
From Miku.
Teto stood up like it was a life or death situation, and started to pace desperately.
“FUCK! “ She screamed. Baguette ran across the room, startled from his owner's lashing out. “What do I do? What do I do? Baguette, help me out here! “ She asked the cream colored cat, like he would magically start talking and fix all of this.
He wouldn't.
And the responsibility was on her hands. Ever since she was small, she hated that. She felt like it was a huge boulder, pressed against her back, crushing her.
But she knew she had to act.
“Okay, did Miku say anything about her meltdowns? “ She started to chew on her nails. “I… I think she did… “
She then looked around nervously, trying to find something that reminded her of that.
From the couch, to the kitchen counter, to the stairs… She then saw a white shirt hanging on the handrail.
Miku was wearing that shirt once.
She then remembered.
“Yeah, and sometimes it gets so bad I can't do anything. “
“Oh, Mimi… I wish I could just- Go into your head and make them go away… Is there something I can do to help? “
“... There is. Usually, to calm myself down, I like to use some objects to ground myself… Like a stress ball. “
Stress balls! Where did she put her stress balls? She used them recently…
She saw her blue one on the living room table, near the used plate. That had to do.
Okay, what else…
“I also like soft objects, like blankets, pillows… You… “
“... Is that an offense or a compliment? “
“Consider what you want. I personally would think it's a compliment. “
In her room, she had lots of those. Miku will stay in her room until she calms down. She put the blue stress ball in her bed, and saw the red one sitting on her desk. She grabbed it and put it next to the blue one.
“I also like to be alone sometimes. “
… Oh.
That was the rough part. Teto was sometimes, very, very clingy.
But anything for Miku, right?
Her cat was climbing up the stairs, and seeing her tidying up her bed, thought it was bedtime, and jumped out on one of the pillows.
“Baguette! “ She reprimanded her, but the cream colored cat didn't seem to care. “That's not for you! That's for-”
The doorbell rang. Two times, one right after the other, with urgency.
In that moment, Teto knew Miku had arrived.
Notes:
Phew! 2.350 words!
This one was a bit of a struggle, especially because it had 'the big moment', but luckily Melanie Martinez made the K-12 album, including Show and Tell and Nurse's Office, which fo some reason helped me lock tf in and start writing like the devil was chasing me.
And it's also one of the things I enjoyed writing the most! Teto is soooooo fun and easy to write! And Miku's POV was also relatively easier in this chapter!
