Work Text:

Conan gritted his teeth as confetti rained down on him. “Want to explain what you’re doing here, Kid?”

The white clad thief stepped into view with an infuriating smirk on his face. “I don’t need a reason, Meitantei-kun. A phantom thief appears where he wills.”

Conan could feel the tick mark developing on his forehead. He took a deep breath to calm down and said, “You can lose the ‘uniform’. Subaru-san is out of town, so I’m the only one here.”

Kid’s posture relaxed a bit, as he asked, “And the scary little lady living across the street won’t be dropping by?”

Conan shook his head. “I have the day to myself today. Ran-neechan is at a tournament, and Professor Agasa took everyone out camping.”

“Well in that case,” there was a poof of pink smoke. When it dissipated, Kaito was standing in the middle of the room and somehow all of the confetti had disappeared.

He had his hands out in a silent ‘ta-dah’ gesture, but Conan just chirped, “Thanks for cleaning up after yourself Kaito-niichan!”

“Oh, enough of that,” Kaito cajoled, “If I’m out of uniform, then you should put down your mask.”

The cheerful look instantly dropped off Conan’s face as he heaved a sigh, “What are you doing here, you idiot? Shouldn’t you be scoping out a heist location or something?”

“Oh, I scoped the museum out weeks ago! I’m all ready for next week! Can’t I visit my favorite cousin without getting interrogated?”

Shinichi raised a skeptical brow, before turning on his heel and walking to his room.

Kaito squawked. “Hey! Don’t just ignore me! I came all this way to see you and you’re just gonna go take a nap?”

“It’s my day off!” Shinichi called over his shoulder.

“But I have something for you!”

Shinichi turned back to his cousin, arms crossed and a supremely unimpressed look on his face.

Kaito bit his lip. “I really don’t think you should be alone today, anniversary of your older form going missing and all, so I thought I’d come over. Just… here.”

With a little poof, a mystery novel and a plateful of lemon pie appeared in Kaito’s hands. Shinichi zeroed in on the novel.

“Is that?”

“Yup, I even got it signed.”

It was the newest installment of the Detective Samonji series. Despite being a fan of the series herself, Ran had banned it from the apartment as the more recent installments got what she called ‘inappropriate for young minds’. What she thought she was saving ‘little Conan-kun’ from considering everything that happened around them, but he couldn’t really argue. As such, he hadn’t gotten to read the latest installment.

Shinichi held out a hand for the book, but Kaito just grinned and gave him a plate of lemon pie. “Eat that first, then we can start reading.”

“We?” Shinichi asked as he started eating. This was really good lemon pie. He’d have to ask his cousin where he got it from.

“Of course! I brought a book for me to read too!”

With that, another book seemingly poofed into existence. It was, surprise surprise, about a phantom thief. Shinichi was a bit surprised when he realized that it was written by the current writer of the Detective Samonji series.

“Kaori-san started writing a phantom thief series too?”

Kaito hummed. “I guess she felt inspired.”

Shinichi vaguely wondered if she’d gotten a visit from a certain thief in white, but decided not to think about it. Instead he finished off the last of the lemon pie and led the way to the library. That book wasn’t gonna read itself after all.
