“Mom!”
She opens her eyes. She didn’t realize they closed. The little pill she swore her friend had just been hyping up is kicking in.
Jasper’s face is a mix of disappointment and resignation as she surveys the scene and figures out her role. The cards fanned out in her hand are disorganized and sideways.
“Whose turn is it?”
“Nobody’s. I won. I’m out.”
His tone is a heart-stabbing reminder of the long day that led to this quiet moment. Her eyes and heart are heavy as she puts her cards down.
“I’m going to bed.”
Jasper nods tensely. “Night.”
