Summary
She makes it all the way to the water line, her feet splashing lightly as she turns back and forth and searches some more. She wonders if she should call out Colin’s name, to make her efforts to find her friend here on the dark beach more obvious. She doesn’t, though. Something inside her is begging her to keep quiet, and she’s too unsettled to speak.
Penelope waits for what must only be a handful of seconds but it feels much longer. There’s something in this sprawling Cretan shoreline that just doesn't make sense to her. It’s the height of summer, yes, but it’s nighttime and therefore the temperature should be cool and comfortable. Why does the air feel so heavy? Why does everything feel suddenly darker and more intense? Why does it feel like something is decidedly, mysteriously wrong with this scene before her?

Or, the one where Colin becomes a sea monster every full moon with an irrepressible need to breed his best friend.
