Work Text:
On a random rooftop somewhere in Gotham, Tim was sitting, deep in thought, about something that had started a couple of weeks ago. He had been going out a couple of nights a week to continue his investigation into Batman and Robin. He’s certain of their identities by now. But the habit is hard to kick. Besides, there's no better way to gather information on them and others. And maybe one day... he could help too.
Still, while he was taking some notes and pictures, this building was a great vantage point, he heard something from behind. At first, he thought that it was just the wind or one of the cats that seemed to follow him some nights... but it felt different. After a while of getting a feeling of his surroundings, making sure he was alone, he went back to what he was doing, observing the night and petting the kitten that found him.
Some couple of nights later, he found himself hearing the same sound, something almost noiseless, like the cat that descended on him in the back alley he was in just a couple of minutes ago. He didn’t feel like it was a threat, and, after using a mirror to check the rooftops and the rest of the alley without moving his head in a way that would make his vigilance obvious, he didn’t see anything different in the shadows. But it was better to be safe than sorry, so he decided to change locations.
Tim was going to attend a concert today, one of the local orchestras was performing The Nutcracker for a charity at the concert hall, and many socialites were going to be there. He was going to use the opportunity to get more intel on the movements of Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson, besides looking into some suspicions he had on some of the other attendees.
After the event, which was fine, the most interesting things that happened were a couple of jabs between some of the politicians and their wives, Tim was deciding if he could go and stalk Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson but, suddenly, he got the feeling of being watched. It was the same feeling he got on the rooftop the other night. He was pretty sure about who it was by now, thanks to the list of attendees in his head. What he didn’t know was her reasons for following him ... Why was she curious about him? What had he done to get the attention?
He should have been more alert. He was watching some drug dealers talking about a new drug, and he wanted to get all the details he could. He was on a rooftop over them and decided on a whim to get to the alley behind them. Maybe he was more tired than normal, maybe he didn’t have to get so close to them for him to be able to hear their conversation, but here he was, running like his life depended on it, because it probably was. He was trying to train a little bit on the side, but it wasn’t enough, and it is showing right now. Normally he would have a couple of routes preplanned for something like this. That’s when he felt it. That curious gaze from before. Within seconds he heard a thud, the thud of a body being slammed to the ground. He decided not to look back, he wouldn’t look at a horse gift in the mouth after all.
So tonight, after all that has happened, Tim has decided he needs to know why. Why was SHE following him? He has his theories, but he just can’t seem to get to the bottom of it all by himself. Besides, after the last time, he’s pretty sure she wouldn’t hurt him... right?
So, deciding on being bold, he whispers onto the night, “I know you are there, show yourself”.
After a beat or two, steps sounded behind him until they reached him.
