A flame that would never retire

Summary:

Regulations and protocols are written in blood. The Jorvik Rangers - Mistfall Station Wildfire Protocol is no different.

SSOtober day 12: Alternate Universe

Notes:

Guess who finally wrote this, weeks late. Work and uni got busy and I'm tired all the time now but I got it written! It's incredibly short as well, I know, but I guess it just worked out that way. Oh well - if I ever continue this past the ghost origins, I'm sure we'll see plenty more of Zoe!

Jorvik Rangers – Mistfall Station

Wildfire Protocol

  • When a wildfire is detected, a mission leader will be instated. You are required to check in with this mission leader before entering the affected area, and after the fire is extinguished.

It was, quite frankly, chaos. The fire had sparked in the middle of the night near the end of wildfire season, when the amount of rangers put on-call for wildfires had already been reduced, and had started to move towards the station itself. A young, black-haired ranger called out loudly, charging to the right with one of their teammates. It had been only their second year on the wildfire team, and this was the biggest fire they had ever seen.

  • Go out in duos, and do not separate unless there is no other option.

In the darkness and chaos, it was easy to get separated. Their teammate had gone forward, but the ranger had heard a noise that didn’t sound like an animal, and had stayed behind a bit. Following the noise, they rode their bay horse towards it, ending up on one of the elevated areas near the lake. But the noise was gone, and the fire burned higher around them.

  • Always keep an eye on where the fire is moving, and do not go to areas where you could get surrounded.

The fire started to surround the ranger and their horse. From what they had seen, it shouldn’t have been able to… and yet it did. There was no way out now, and then they heard a noise again. Different, this time. Chuckling. Trying to look across the fire, they could only just make out a human face, though no details were visible. They threw something into the fire, and it burned even higher and faster.

And it started to close in on them.

And it got closer.

And closer… And closer… And closer…

Until it couldn’t get closer anymore.

  • If you or a civilian see a black-haired, darkskinned ranger in an old uniform on a bay Jorvik Wild Horse, report this to the station immediately. Unlike common superstition in Mistfall, the Jorvik Rangers do not believe that that this being is the cause of the fires, but they are still a reliable warning of where it will strike next.
