Chapter 1: The Pit

Chapter Text

Avid thought he died. Scratch that he DID die, twice in fact. But as he lies at the bottomless pit of the crypt, he can’t help but feel…happy. El was alive. Different, like him, but alive. And in truth, that’s the best he could ask for. Wherever his mind sent him is where he must be, because no matter what it takes, he must get back to her. She was his home after all.

“What is happening…,” he can’t help but whine, his body aches with what can only be called divine intervention. The scars from the stake still burn, like it is internally bleeding. The wound isn’t there though, only the torn clothes (thanks Pyro and Owen…) left in its wake. It is bizarre. No, it is otherworldly.

Avid looks up, the brief light from the sun floods the entrance of the pit, which he was nowhere near. Why did he believe Owen? He knew Owen hated his guts, but literally killing someone who’s on your side with a stake? Wait- the stake..it’s still in his…oh god.

He looks to the piece of wood plunged into him, deep enough to kill both a human and vampire. But Avid was neither anymore. He was…different. It was almost like a pacemaker, in a weird, non-medical way. The stake itself didn’t hurt, it didn’t even make him bleed. It was just…in there. If he could get his arms to work, Avid could probably pull it out, like a splinter. The ache in his body is so painful. Avid could feel his non-beating heart, bobble in his chest. ‘It didn’t belong there’, he thought, trying to wake his burning bones.

He’s gotta wake up. His body has to wake up. He needs to go. He needs to find El, to find Shelby and Drift and-

….

He needs to find Scott.

He wants to scream, to cry or yell, but all he can do is whine because in the end, crying is what brought him into this world, and it was also what took him out of it. No. No more crying until you find them. No crying until you’re safe. Pure pain surges through his bones as his fingers twitch. Progress, that’s good. He can feel his fingers move back and forth as his body wakes up. He grits his teeth (which have gotten sharper) the pain creating tremors of torture in his body. It was odd how his heart feels so numb compared to the rest of him. Well, he doesn’t really need it anymore he supposed.

Gradually, his body wakes up, albeit painfully, but awake. He looks to his hands, and when he looks down he sees it. The mark of the demon. It’s corrupted, black pattern finally appearing. El looked so consumed by these marks, it must happen slowly. Meaning that Avid must also have been trapped in this town for too long. All the more reason to leave. He sits up, his body weighing him down.

“Like a splinter..”, Avid mumbles, his vocal cords strained due to his previous screams from the stake. He shakily grabs the stake, his hands twitchy and nervous. Avid wonders how big the hole in his chest would be.
Would it be all the way through? Will he feel it? With how numb his heart feels, Avid doubts it. Through gritted teeth he tightens his grip on the piece of wood, eyes shut. He will not meet El with a stake in his heart.

Avid opens his eyes, the stake in his hand.

However, so was his heart.

He must’ve yanked it out. Avid didn’t even feel it leave his body but seeing it punctured on the end of the stake? It’s insane. The veins and arteries connected are pulled with it, becoming tangled. Oh god he’s going to have to pull them off isn’t he? Like tangled vines the arteries twist as his heart stays on the stake. Without a choice, Avid pulls. Hard. One by one parts of the circulatory system snaps apart like ropes. The action happens smooth and quick, since his heart seemed to be stagnant. It didn’t hurt, his heart wasn’t exactly needed in his new body, his demon body.

Avid throws the stake away, his heart along with it. No blood, no excruciating suffering that was to follow. His body once human now nothing human at all, he was something that only existed in a world of fire. The hole doesn’t seem to close like the other marks did, leaving a cavern in his chest. This body was puzzling and soon enough, Avid is going to figure it out.

Avid stands with a new strength to him, something unholy guiding his instincts. He wants many things. To find Scott, to find the people he loves and to kill Pyro and Owen. And Avid chose the latter to deal with first. The pit is large, much bigger than him, but his new body makes him feel…powerful. With ease, Avid climbs up the pit’s walls, with his newfound strength guiding him. Avid was a demon now, a monstrous being. He is supposed to be a heinous creature that everyone should fear. And maybe in a weird, twisted pleasure, that is what he wants.

The top of the pit was bright, sun falling onto the limestone. It almost hurt his eyes. It was beautiful. As a vampire, Avid had missed the sun, it reminded him of the good in the world, that happiness was always circling. It feels so good on his skin. It feels so tender and warm. Avid’s mind goes to one person in his haze; Scott. Scott, for a vampire was always so warm. He was- no IS warm, he’s still here. And as Avid stares at the sun, he can’t help but wonder, if Scott knew he was dead.
