Owen threw him a bundle of wrappings, “Fix your own damn neck for all I care.”
Avid took them gratefully, sitting to be better steadied. His hands still shook as he wrapped his neck, wincing in pain as the cloth brushed the scratches. Three. That was more than he’d had the first time. He’d just had the one.
“Why did you help me?” Avid asked quietly, fidgeting with his collar, the pain was rapidly becoming background noise in his mind. It still hurt, it never stopped hurting.
“You’re the one person here.”
“That doesn’t answer it, Owen.”

Avid hated looking at the scar upon his skin.
It ran along his neck and shoulders, festering with blood and infection, the edges jagged and uneven: clearly meant to be a quick, fatal blow with horrifying sharp claws- the insides pulsed with moving shoulder muscle underneath- visible in all of its agony, slowly leaking that same dark substance he had coughed up previously.
It never healed properly like a wound should. To him? It was vile and disgusting and inhuman. Like some sort of monster. It made him want to puke, to know he’s lived like this for so long.
He knew he was dying. That was a fact.
He felt it every day deep within his very core. The way he felt adrenaline and fear pump through him at the slightest noise, the constant anxiety over the worst to come, the way his once perfectly fitting clothes sagged on his limbs, and the way he felt his heartbeat get slower everyday.
It had gotten to a point where sometimes Avid couldn’t even feel his own pulse on certain days.
And it horrified him.
