A Blue Year

Summary:

With only an hour left until the new year, things are looking up. Tom and Daisy started to work out their problems. Gatsby finally got over the idea of Daisy and recognized her as a friend. Nick found a place to belong and maybe someone to belong with.

As champagne is popped and the two find themselves together, maybe, just maybe, they'll add the final piece to the next year.

Chapter Text

Music echoed loudly throughout the party as drunken guests cheered amongst themselves. The new year being only around an hour away, Nick would claim to stay away from the alcohol at the party, but hadn’t found himself hesitating at an offer of champagne from Gatsby.

As the night drew closer to its midpoint, Jordan could be found somewhere in the mansion where she had dragged Daisy away, talking about one of her recent matches. A drunken Tom could be found crying in one of the bathrooms, not over anything serious, though, as he only found himself upset at his favorite football team losing, he’d never admit it to anyone, but he can be a sad drunk at times. The final two of the group could be found sitting side by side at the end of the docs.

The night was darker out by the docs, with the vocal point of the night sitting across the waves. No longer a green shine that had infatuated Gatsby for years, but now a rich blue that shone across the night. Daisy had replaced the light two months ago after the green one had broken in the rain.

The two laughed like schoolboys, both slightly drunk off the champagne Gatsby served, neither quite realised how cold it was. Nick finished off the last bit of his glass and set it down next to himself. He turned to look out toward the sky. The sudden silence caused questions from Gatsby.

“Are you okay, Old sport?”

A smile curled upon Nick's lips as he looked toward Gatsby, his mind finding a myriad of ways to describe the way Gatsby's face enthralls him, pushing away those thoughts for a minute, replying.

“ Never better, Gatsby.”

Turning his gaze back toward the night sky, Nick finds himself laughing a little. Gatsby gave him a curious look before Nick elaborated.

“I used to spend hours back home looking at the stars; never would I imagine I’d find myself somewhere where they’re so dim.”

“Do you miss them?”

Gatsby asked, his eyes looking down at his glass, still a tiny bit of liquid left that swirled as his hand moved. Maybe it’s just the champagne, but for some reason, he can’t help but feel sad at the idea of Nick’s regret of moving to New York.

Still the same smile adorning his face, Nick turned to Gatsby, a sweet voice whispering out.

“Sometimes, but I guess I traded those stars for another, and I’d never undo it.”

Notes:

If anything is off, in my defense, this was fanfiction I wrote during history; I changed some details to better match historical accuracy. Also, I like the idea of al;l of them being friends, Tom needs therapy though, who am I kidding, they all need therapy, except maybe Jordan, she drives them there.
