Crossed Fates

Summary:

After what happened at the bank, Iridescence didn't think he would see Truth again, nor that man.

Notes:

I wrote this a few days ago but I was too lazy to post

Work Text:

A tall figure dressed in a blue coat stood in a small alley. It was day time but one wouldn't notice him in the darkness unless they got awfully close. One of his hands held his side while the other caressed the white cat on his shoulder. His eyes were stuck on a building in the opposite street, a detective agency. He had visited secretly a few times already but he didn't expect the day where he would officially be tasked to be here would come.

Something about monitoring the girl it seemed, though he didn't know why it had to be him. Did the family lack manpower these days? Orders are orders. He yawned through his mask and looked back once again, even from this distance he could faintly see the inside, a blurry vision of the shelves and a desk, and a white silhouette...

His eyes widened as his back straightened. His brain replayed the scene in loop, he tried analyzing how and why but no answer would come to him and before he knew it, he had crossed the road and was standing in front of the door of the agency. It can't be. He couldn't believe it, he was sure it was impossible and yet he couldn't move. He had to make sure. His hand reached for the doorknob but it escaped his grip when the door was pulled from the inside.

"Good morning, are you a customer?"

It's him.

"Ah... I'm..."

"Oh, it's you Mr. Iridescence!"

A blond head popped up above the white haired man's shoulder. He flinched, reminded of his initial mission. He quickly thought on how to proceed so as not to blow up his cover, putting aside the endless questions he had.

"Hello, Mrs. Truth. I apologize for coming without an appointment."

"Don't worry about it, how about coming inside for some tea!"

"I'll take you up on the offer."

Iridescence followed after her, passing in front of the other man who stayed silent. They went to a room which looked like a living space and an office at the same time. Truth put away some files from the sofa and motioned to him to sit down.

"Sorry, we were in the middle of cleaning..."

"Maybe I should come back another day if it bothers you?"

"Of course not! Just wait a bit, I'll go heat up the water-!"

The girl ran out and the two men were now left alone. Iridescence would feel awkward if he was the only one sitting down, so he turned to the man behind him, eager to inquire more.

"Have we met before?"

He stole the words from his mouth. A white cloth covered his eyes but Iridescence could feel a sharp gaze staring at him beneath.

"I don't think so."

It was too early to say more. The man seemed surprised but his expression quickly turned into a gentle smile.

"Really? Sorry, I actually lost my memories and you felt somewhat familiar, but I guess I'm wrong..."

"I would remember someone as eye-catching as you."

"Oh- my clothes? I feel more comfortable with them but Lady Truth and Mr. Inference insist on me wearing something more casual when we need to go out. By the way- I forgot to introduce myself, my name is White. I heard Lady Truth call you Mr. Iridescence...?"

"That's right."

White smiled while Iridescence kept his usual stiff demeanor. A heavy silence filled the room as none of them knew what to add to make a conversation, or at least the white-haired didn't. Iridescence was lost in his thoughts, he had entered without thinking, simply following his instinct, but now that he saw the other man with his own eyes, his mind felt more at ease for the first time in a while.

"I'm sorry, Mr. White, I think I'll have to leave now. Please convey my apologies to Mrs. Truth."

"Already- I'm sure she will be back in an instant, didn't you want to ask her something?"

"I can always do it another time. Well then..."

Iridescence hurried outside before White could say another word. Even if he wanted to stay longer, he knew it wasn't safe for either of them to be seen together, there are eyes everywhere. This short encounter was enough for him.

However, he couldn't anticipate that he had only awakened a dormant fire within the deepest parts of White's mind, which would lead him to find Iridescence once again.
