To Bloom in the Heart

Summary:

A hotel is possibly the worst place she could have ended up. For a borrower living in the world of pokemon that's a big statement. After all, these magical creatures could take her out in many ways. But forced out of her original home, she has no choice. Maybe it won't be so bad.

...that human is 10 feet tall.

----------

An Alternate Universe where everything is the same, except borrowers exist. Story begins just prior to the beginning of Legends Z-A but will follow the continuity with some spins on the timeline for storytelling reasons. Enjoy ~

Notes:

Welcome to a g/t Pokemon Legends Z-A-centric story that focuses on a new guest staying at Hotel Z.

This is your spoiler warning! This fic will hint at later-game content from Legends Z-A, so please be aware of that as you read.

The first 8 chapters will be available right away due to being cross posted, but updates will arrive on a fairly sporadic basis as I'm trying to stay 4 chapters ahead of the most recent. (Mostly to keep a certain curse at bay lol) This is also my first time posting on ao3, so any feedback on tagging/ readability is very appreciated.

Alright with that out of the way, let's drop into a much smaller world of Pokemon, shall we? :D

Chapter 1: Up and Gone

Chapter Text

“Bean, I can and will throw you off of this bed so help me Arceus.” There was a moment of blessed silence before the warbling noise started up again and blankets were quickly launched, the suddenness causing a startled trill from the previously sleeping Flabebe laying in her moss bed nearby.

The instigator quickly warbled what could only be construed as an apology to the tiny fairy-type before turning back to its original task.

Green eyes drifted between the green squishy pokemon and the yawning Flabebe in mock annoyance that soon gave way to tired acceptance. “Fine, you win. I’ll get up.”

Bean bounced around on their tail before flopping down and happily trailing out of the bedroom and towards the rest of the tiny home.

After shaking her head in exasperation, her gaze fell on the glass she had managed to make into a mirror with some aluminum foil and tape. Staring back was a disheveled 20 year old with tired green eyes and jagged-layered dirty blonde hair. At least that’s what she heard humans call the color, she would have said it looked kinda like sand.

“Bé?” She glanced over and smiled softly at her pokemon partner, walking over and gently carding her fingers through the incredibly fine lilac and white fur that covered the tiny pokemon’s body. “Fla…”

“Morning Flora.” She greeted softly, pulling her hand away. “Let’s get breakfast before Bean decides to raid the pantry.”

The ‘again’ was silent.

Flora giggled softly before nodding, holding her arms out.

With some effort Flora was hoisted up on her shoulder, arms holding steady on the top of her friend’s head.

“Maybe we’ll finally find a spot away from all of these humans and you can finally find a flower you like.” They made their way to the kitchen, her friend groaning as she heard rustling. “I’m going to kick them out, I swear.”

Flora giggled again.

As they entered the kitchen, she froze. Flora tensed under her touch as well.

She felt her heart drop as she stared at the light filtering into the space. Not through her carefully crafted windows, but the boards above her home.

One was missing entirely.

Fuck.”

There was a flurry of movement as Bean quickly darted towards her and noise erupted behind them.

What in the world?!” Came an older woman’s voice, almost booming. “It looked like a pokemon darling! Come take a look!

Her heart stopped beating. The old lady of the house had found them, and where she was… the old man usually wasn’t far behind.

She turned and bolted, frantically grabbing her bags and whatever she could reach quickly before strapping Flora into her carrying bag and picking up Bean, thanking whatever Legends were listening that the green pokemon was super light.

The sound of more floorboards being ripped up met her ears and panic flooded her veins as she darted frantically towards an exit- any exit.

“Bebe!” Her head snapped to the path Flora had pointed out and she exited the crawlspace into the room above without thinking.

Only to end up face to back with the youngest human of the house, a 19 year old girl named Harmony. Thankfully the girl had never had a desire to become a trainer, and her parents didn’t own any pokemon either. It had been the safest house a borrower like her could have ever dreamed of.

And now she had to leave.

She flinched as Bean started wriggling in her arms, and before they could start making noise and give the group away, she dropped them. Preoccupied with keeping an eye on the human in the room, she barely noticed them heading towards the bag laying on the floor. And, of course, that’s when Harmony began to turn around.

Without another thought, she dove into the bag as well.

A confused warble startled her and she turned to see Bean staring at her curiously. She scowled as she twisted her bag around so Flora was more comfortable. “You have some nerve asking me why I’m here.” She grumbled. “Was I just supposed to leave you for dead?”

Bean blinked at her before looking up. It was all the warning they got as the bag was suddenly lifted and they were sent tumbling deeper into it. Again, by the grace of one of the Legends, they collectively dropped into a shallow pocket that seemed to store some lint and…

She stared at the train tickets in growing horror.

Lumiose City was the human’s destination.

She felt her eyes burn as the panic from earlier crept back up her spine. Anistar City was fairly large for a place borrowers usually settled, but it was fairly remote and quiet.

Lumiose City was the exact opposite in all things but size. Loud, populated, tons of wild pokemon, and trainers…

It was often called ‘the city of light’ by humans.

Her kind called it ‘the Distortion World for borrowers’.

“Fla…?” She rubbed at her face and took a deep breath. She could make this work, if not for her own sake but for both Flora and Bean too.

“It’s okay, just… a little shaken up.” She admitted softly, gently patting her two companions in a hopeless bid to calm her frazzled nerves. “Lumiose City… sure.”
