Chapter 1: “This Is It, Isn’t It?”

Chapter Text

“Kirsten! If I see you carrying one more box, I’ll banish you to Morag and Gordon’s for the day!” Amy huffed , exasperated by the love of her life. “Or even better, I’ll send you to your parents!” She had been charging down the stairs with the rug from their bedroom when she’d spotted Kirsten trying to lug yet another box to the van outside.

“Come on! You know we’ll get this done so much faster if you let me help” Kirsten argued back, a small smile gracing her lip as she watched Amy fight her frustration, a cardboard box in hand. “And this box barely weighs a thing!”

“I don’t care if it’s empty, levitating or is carrying the Crown Jewels, it’s all under control! We’ve paid a removal company to purposely avoid this particular argument.” Amy retorted as she exited the flat to offload the goods. “And, just in case you’ve not noticed, you’re eight months pregnant” she shouted behind her.

Not noticed? How could she not notice?’ Kirsten thought. She felt like the size of a bus, couldn’t do her own shoe laces up anymore and needed to pee every five minutes. It definitely hadn’t slipped her mind!

Having taken a moment to cool down outside, Amy came back in and strode over to the redhead in the kitchen. She took hold of Kirsten’s hands and pulled her chin up a little so they were eye-to-eye. “Look, I know this isn’t easy, my love” she spoke calmly “I know you want to get stuck in and help out, but your most important job right now is our son.” Amy kissed Kirsten’s cheek delicately. “And, don’t you worry, you’ll be needed to help unpack at the other end… I promise!”

After getting back together, once Amy had escaped her time on Vigil, their relationship had sped along. Within weeks they’d set up a custody agreement with Morag and Gordon. They agreed that Poppy was to live with them full-time and would get regular sleepovers with her grandparents. Then, a short time after that, Kirsten had moved into Amy’s flat permanently and even went on to sell her own flat.

Poppy had instantly warmed to Kirsten and couldn’t understand why she only stopped over from time to time. In truth, the three of them had bonded together as a family unit faster than anyone could have guessed. It felt like this had always been their shared life. Amy wanted to wake up each morning to Kirsten beside her, and Poppy was more than keen to be tucked into bed and read to by her new Scottish parent most evenings.

“Okay, fine!” Pouted Kirsten, a mock frown adorning her forehead. “You win!”

She let Amy pull her into a tight hug, a little to the side. The kind of hug that always made her feel like everything would be okay if they could just stay in that moment. Kirsten wrapped her arms round Amy’s waist and held her close too. She rested her head on Amy’s chest and together they took in the final moments in the flat together, a place that had been so good to all three of them.
