Nathaniel Park Sits Down With Vogue, Speaks On The Price of Being A Superstar

A decade into his successful career, the celebrated Philippine musician talks to Rebecca Valdez about his journey to fame, the pressure of being the most-streamed artist in Asia, and the life he has built for himself.
The journey to his fame starts inside his home. Nathaniel witnessed his mother’s joy and exuberance when she watched her favorite singer on television. The five-year-old Manileño was intrigued and asked his parents to enroll him in music classes. His mother is his rock, the pop star admits. She has enrolled him in piano and guitar lessons, just to name a few. The vocal lessons started when he was seven, and the dance lessons shortly after. Nathaniel worked his way and never skipped a step to get where he is today.
Dubbed as a phenomenal vocalist and incredible dancer, the soloist began his trainee life at fifteen, and debuted at twenty with his hit single Butterfly. It took five years for him to finally show the world what he can do, and the nation was floored by the immense talent as shown in the various awards he bagged in his first year in the industry. The most notable of which is the 2015 Breakthrough Artist of the Year in Awit Awards and Billboard Philippine Music Awards.
Nathaniel released his full album ONLY U the following year and became the most-streamed artist in the country. Music critic Arnold Go wrote, “He is a generational artist. He is the next big thing for our country. Give it a few years, and he will be Asia’s biggest star.”
It is an accurate forecast because four years into his career, Nathaniel sang the Original Soundtrack for the Highest Grossing Film of 2019: Hello, Love Goodbye. His original composition, Kung Hindi Rin Lang Ikaw, achieved the Highest Daily Stream for an Artist in Spotify PH, garnering 2.5 million streams. He's also the first Filipino artist to surpass 15 million monthly listeners on the platform. Nathaniel Park was dubbed Asia’s superstar– the voice that captured the Orient.
The following years saw the rise of Nathaniel Park: 4 full albums, 12 number one hits, all sold-out concerts, and numerous accolades from award-giving bodies in Asia.
His close friends often describe the singer as hardworking and focused. His best friend, actor Jeongwoo Seo, is always proud of him. “Hani worked so hard to be where he is right now. He trained for five years, and it was not always rainbows and butterflies for him. Hindi yan tumigil kahit na hindi nakakapasa sa mga entertainment agencies na pinuntahan niya.” Jeongwoo shares in a phone call with the Vogue team.
Nathaniel just shakes his head when informed of his friend's statement, telling the team he just did what he needed to do, and it eventually worked out for him.
Even in the shoot, the soloist appears shy when the cameras are not on him. You will find him in the corner speaking with his staff and making sure everything is as expected. It’s also notable how Nathaniel transforms when in front of the professional lens. He exudes confidence and grace– commanding the room with his presence, truly a superstar.
“I did not want to say it, but we are so starstruck right now.” Valdez opens up, and Nathaniel shyly laughs, making the entire Vogue team fascinated by the singer’s humility, even with the superstar status and a decade of experience. The photoshoot ran smoothly with little exchange on how the soloist wants to be perceived in the photos. The entire industry already knows, but Vogue would like to chime in and agree with the consensus that Nathaniel Park is so easy to work with, and he radiates humbleness and quiet authority.
The interview shows a new side of Nathaniel. He shares his innermost thoughts, and some truly surprising things. He talks about his past, the things he has experienced, is experiencing, and wants to experience in the near future.
Question: You’ve been singing for a decade now, and some of us want to know if there was ever a time that you regretted your decision to pursue music and superstardom?
Nathaniel: Wow, what a first question. (The singer pauses and thinks for a minute before answering) Yes, there was a time that I regretted it. I can’t tell you the exact reason, but I think if I were given the choice, I would’ve stopped making music.
It’s still something I think about even now, and I hope everyone doesn't take it the wrong way. The choices I made are what made me who I am today, and I will stand by them. I am thankful for what I have right now, but honestly, I also lost the biggest part of me that day. It’s something I never talked about, and it’s the first time I’m saying it.
Question: Your greatest hit is still Kung Hindi Rin Lang Ikaw, and we always thought that it was written for the movie. However, you mentioned in one Instagram Live that it was a personal song. Can you share more about it?
Nathaniel: I am actually so impressed by these questions. First time ko sila marinig at sasagutin lahat. (Pats on the back for Vogue’s research team)
Nakatingin na sa akin ang manager ko. Hello, Ate Sam, I promised to be honest in this interview, and you agreed. Happy ten years, sa atin. We really went through it.
It is a personal song. It’s connected to the first question. (The entire crew actually gasped at the revelation) It’s a song I made when I was at my lowest, and ironically, it’s also the song that catapulted me to fame. It’s so special to me in so many ways. I think my fans have noticed that I rarely sing the song in concerts even though they love it so much. There’s just so much history in there, and most of the time I get lost in it.
I was not supposed to give the song to the movie, but it starred my best friend, and he was the one who pulled me out of the gutter. So thanks, Jeongwoo.
Question: I take it that the song is your answer? Because that is the next question. What’s the most special song in your discography?
Nathaniel: Yes, it is. If I have to choose another, then it’s Pahintulot. Hindi na ako sasagot kung bakit, baka tumabi na sa akin si Ate Sam. (The studio is filled with laughter)
Question: You also mentioned that after your sold-out concert next month, you would take a well-deserved break. What are your plans? Can you tell us what your process is when you decide it’s time to slow down and then go again?
Nathaniel: I have given it my all for the past ten years. I don’t think I’ve allowed myself to rest for more than a week. I genuinely enjoyed every second of it, making music and spending time with my blossoms (Nathaniel’s fandom name), and I have no regrets when it comes to that.
I spent the majority of my youth in front of the world, and on the stage, and so when my 10th anniversary happened, I had the chance to think about what I want to do next. I call it a luxury. Hindi naman lahat nabibigyan ng chance na makapag pahinga. I talked to my family, and the people who have been with me through everything, and I told them that I truly want to rest. Hindi naman ako magreretiro, but I won’t be making or releasing any music. I won’t take long, but there are no promises.
Hindi rin naman ako mawawala. I will still share some aspects of my life and give updates to the fans. I’m just going to enjoy and do things I have not done because I was too busy all the time.
Question: A very valid and understandable decision. I am personally a fan, so I have seen you run and run to chase your dream, and you’re at the clouds right now, so high, and we truly get it when you say you wanted a breather. Speaking of which, your last release just won album of the year in all award-giving bodies in the country, and in your thank you speeches, you always say, ‘To my butterfly, I owe you everything.’
You know, I was supposed to ask if the butterfly is your mom because everyone assumed that, but right now, I want to change the question. Who is the butterfly always mentioned in your speeches?
Nathaniel: I think this interview is going to change my entire career. (The singer laughs) Is this my staff’s way of permitting me to be vulnerable and declare how much of a loser I am? Kaya pala sabi ni Ate Sam, candid ang interview, and I was not given a list.
My butterfly is not my mom. I do owe my life to her. I love you, ma, pero hindi po siya yun. It’s my very first song, and it’s about a butterfly that has always stayed in a person’s garden and never asked for anything else. I will forever be thankful for the quiet love, devotion, and just, despite everything, my butterfly endured so much for me. I will always mention them in my speeches, and I hope one day, I will be able to say their name.
Question: I am absolutely changing the question. I am sure my team will understand. We know you’ll be stepping away from the limelight after your concert. Are you going to chase your butterfly this time?
Nathaniel: I would like to keep that for myself.

Kanina pa nakatitig si Lawrence sa hindi naman nakaandar na TV. It was showing a video of Nathaniel Park answering questions for his upcoming concert, and he got lost in the singer’s face that he had to get his bearings and turn the television off. He does not live under a rock, and his friends are perfectly fine in sending him Nathaniel’s latest magazine interview, so he knows about everything.
Malapit na matapos taguan niyo. Mahuhuli ka na.
Woongki sent that message, and he’s been sitting on it for an hour now. Hindi na siya nagreply kasi wala siyang masagot. With him back in the Philippines, sobrang liit na ulit ng mundong ginagalawan nila. He thinks about his life for the past six years, and he knows why he’s back in the country.
His thoughts are interrupted when the door opens, and he’s a bit surprised when he sees Woongki with what looks to be a bag of food. “Akala ko busy ka?” Tanong niya sa kaibigan.
Woongki just gives him a sigh and his signature pout before sitting beside him on the long sofa. Nilapag ang dalang pagkain sa mesa sa harap nila. “Nacancel yung shoot kasi nag-attitude yung rookie idol. Buong crew ang naabala. Hindi ko na talaga alam anong nangyayari sa industriya ngayon. Miss na miss na kita, bestie. You are my favorite Nepo baby.”
“Kung maka Nepo baby ka naman.” Natatawang sagot niya, but he doesn’t deny it. Lawrence started his career at eighteen, starring in a youth-oriented show sa isang malaking network. It was aired on Sundays after ASAP, and he played the younger brother of the main female lead. Wala siyang kaloveteam doon, and he admits, he was ass at acting back then, but he was cute, and his father is a household name. Not to mention his mother, who’s a beauty queen and a lifestyle influencer.
He received criticism for that, and so he vowed to himself that he would improve, and he did. Ang next niyang big project ay isang fantasy teleserye at support role pa rin ang nakuha niya, but he actually auditioned for it. He worked hard for every scene, at kahit na namatay ang character niyang bampira by the latter half of the show, he left an impact. Dito na nagsunod-sunod ang proyekto niya. He made good money, and he can admit to himself na hindi siya tinulungan ng magulang niya.
“Sus, alam naman ng buong bansa yun. Pero at least hindi ka mayabang, at ikaw ang philippine haponserye sweetheart.” Sabi pa ni Woongki kaya natawa na talaga si Lawrence, hearing his monicker after a very long time.
“Baliw.” Sagot niya because all of those were history now. He’s no longer a celebrity. He left the industry six years ago. He basically ghosted everyone after the end of his most successful teleserye. The nation thought na graduate na siya sa haponseryes, and will now be one of the top-billed actors of the network. Maraming naka line-up na projects for him, but he surprised everyone by ending his contract and basically disappearing from the face of the earth.
Bakit?
“Dada!” Napalingon sila dahil bumukas ang kwarto, and a grumpy five-year-old runs toward him. Bagong gising ito at halatang wala sa mood.
Lawrence immediately opens both of his hands to welcome his kid into his arms. “Gising na ang Elie ko?” Malambing niyang tanong, at tumango lang ang bata na nakasubsob na sa dibdib niya, nakapikit at mukhang gusto pang matulog. The young child scrunches his eyes, and finally notices the new person kaya mas kumapit pa ito kay Lawrence.
“Grabe, Law. Were you in the room when it happened?” Tukso ni Woongki as he stares at Lawrence’s son, na hindi talaga kamukha ng kaibigan niya.
“Gusto kita murahin. Alam mo yun.” Mahinang tugon ni Lawrence while comforting his child na ngayon ay nakasiksik na sa leeg niya. His child is naturally clingy and sweet, and it’s more evident tuwing nagigising itong mag-isa. Hindi rin niya madeny ang sinabi ni Woongki. Iilan lamang ang nakakaalam ng tungkol kay Elie, and almost all of them agree that the only thing that his child got from Lawrence is the clinginess (even that can be questioned), the rest is from his other dad.
Woongki just chuckles, and continues to stare at Elie na ngayon ay mukhang good mood na kaya kumalas na kay Lawrence at tumakbo papunta ng play area niya na nasa gilid ng sala. The kid picks up a book, isa pang hindi ugali ni Lawrence. Ang sabi ng nanay ni Lawrence, he was a kid who liked to play and run around. Ellie, however, likes to read, and is now learning the piano because his school teacher informed them that his child played something by ear while in a music class a few months ago.
“Are you not going back? People still know you, and will definitely like it if you get back to acting.” Woongki asks, and Lawrence just smiles and shakes his head.
His answer has not changed, and he thinks it will never change. He has Elie now, and his son is the most important thing in his life. “My answer will always be no. Hindi na ako tulad ng dati.”
“True.” Woongki agrees, and they both giggle when Elie slowly rolls to the padded mat with his book still in hand. “Anak na anak niya, Lawrence. Hindi mo yan kayang i-deny kapag nahuli ka na.”
“Tangina mo.” Bulong ni Lawrence para di siya marinig ng anak niya na nagbabasa pa rin. Nasa gilid nito ang keyboard na kakabili lang niya dahil gusto talagang matuto ni elie. Narinig na rin niya ang anak na nagsabing gusto nitong matutong mag-gitara so they’re looking into that now na nasa Pilipinas na sila.
Lawrence knows it’s only a matter of time now. Lalo pa at hindi niya masyadong sinikreto ang pag-uwi sa Pilipinas. He’s still discreet about it pero napagod na rin siya. Nasa point na siya ng buhay niya na kung may makakita sa kanya at makilala siya ay hindi siya tatakbo. He’s also so tired of running away, and he knows his decision was right. Lalo na at nakikita niya kung ano na ang nakamit ni Nathaniel ngayon, but as he looks at his son– he feels guilty, pero hindi niya alam kung saan magsisimula, paano aamin.
Kaya kung pwede ang universe na lang ang gumawa ng paraan.
“Dada! Can I also learn how to dance?” His child randomly spouts after finishing his book.
“Anak ka nga ni Nathaniel.” Bulong niya pero rinig na rinig iyon ng kaibigan na tumatawa na naman.

Blind Item: Nepo Baby Back With A Baby?
How true ang balita na ang nagbalik na ang isang Nepo Baby Actor (NB) sa Philippines? The NB was seen discreetly arriving in NAIA Terminal 2 last month with a child about five years old, and it seems like they’re staying for good.
According to our eyewitnesses, the once (and still) popular actor was dressed in all black and had a facemask most of the time, but his face is too recognizable not to notice. Kasama rin daw nito ang ina niyang isang celebrity rin kaya naman napansin talaga siya. “He was holding the kid the whole time. You don’t just hold a kid’s hand if it’s not someone close to you.” The source informs FP.
It is well-known that NP suddenly retired in the industry, right after the success of his first teleserye, streamed in Netflix, and major broadcasting channels all throughout Asia. Akala ng lahat ay magtutuloy na ang pagsikat ng aktor ngunit bigla na lang itong nag-announce na aalis na siya, at hindi na nagpakitang muli.
Apparently, he’s back and with a child! May mga nagsasabing baka anak ito ng kapatid niyang babae since she got married years ago, pero wala siya sa airport kaya the conclusions are very varied. His latest sighting is raising so many questions among netizens, and everyone awaits whether he’s going to return to acting.
May mga nagsasabing nagbabakasyon lamang si NP at babalik rin ito agad sa ibang bansa. Bakit nga ba kasi umalis siya bigla six years ago? May kinalaman ba ito sa batang kasama niya sa airport? Bakit naman sobrang sikreto ng lahat?

Nathaniel’s manager informs him that they will wrap up in thirty minutes. Ang totoo ay pwede naman nang umalis si Nathaniel since he’s done with the concert rehearsals pero nakasanayan na rin niyang hintayin ang lahat para sabay na silang matapos sa work day nila. He values his staff, and so it has become a habit, and truth be told, the habit was formed years ago because he does not want to be alone inside his once shared home.

Nathaniel doesn’t open the link. Pagod pa siya at ayaw pa niyang magreply sa mga kaibigan. The three of them met as teenagers, wide-eyed trainees who thought they were going to debut together. Nathaniel debuted as a solo artist instead. Jeongwoo became an actor, and Steven is a producer for a global group right now.
Jeongwoo is the reason why he met Lawrence.
He remembers being still a trainee at eighteen, and Jeongwoo has debuted as an actor in a youth-oriented show. He’s one of the main characters of the show and was gaining traction for his good looks and good acting. Sobrang proud nila sa kaibigan nila kaya pinapanood talaga nila ang mga bagong episodes when it airs. That was when he first saw Lawrence, awkward Lawrence in his braces, and also awkward acting. Ang sabi ni Jeongwoo ay mabait si Lawrence, anak ng artista kaya may sariling manager at hatid sundo ng van.
Kaya ang first impression niya sa binata ay isang privileged kid na hindi naghirap para makapasok sa industriya. So when they met during Jeongwoo’s birthday, Nathaniel was proven so wrong, his heart started beating erratically when Lawrence sat beside him in a game of truth or dare, and the two of them exchanged numbers as the night ended. Simula noon ay lagi na silang nag-uusap. All his assumptions were proven wrong, and he saw how Lawrence works just as hard as he does. They just have different circumstances.
Their first date happened inside a Butterfly Sanctuary. Wala pa kasing pera sa Nathaniel, and Lawrence has mentioned that he has always loved them. Sobrang awkward nilang dalawa dahil artista na si Lawrence at kinakabahan sila na may makakilala dito. Ni hindi nga nila mahawakan ang kamay ng isa’t isa, pero sobrang na enjoy nilang dalawa ang araw na iyon. Nathaniel still has the polaroid photo they took that day tuck inside his wallet.
Si Lawrence rin ang naging lakas niya para hindi huminto at patuloy na mangarap. His trainee group was disbanded, and his dream of becoming part of a boy group has suddenly ended. His future was uncertain, and he had been training for years. He remembers that night precisely, Nathaniel picked up his very first beer, isang bote lang naman dahil hindi niya alam kung magugustuhan niya ang lasa nito. Ngunit bago pa man niya ito mabuksan ay dumating si Lawrence sa loob ng studio apartment niya.
“Hani ko,” Malambing niyang sabi. Iyon pa lang ang sinasabi ni Lawrence pero umiiyak na siya. Lawrence fully understands his (now) boyfriend, and so he envelops Nathaniel in a hug, the trainee crying at siniksik ang sarili sa leeg ni Lawrence. “Proud na proud ako sa’yo. Kahit anong mangyari.”
Hindi sumagot si Nathaniel dahil naiiyak pa rin talaga siya. His contract with his company has not ended or anything. Actually, sa pitong trainees ay tatlo lang sa kanila ang natira. They were informed that the company plans to debut him in a year, and Nathaniel has always thought that he was going to share the stage with his co-trainees who he sees as real friends now.
They stayed like that for a few more minutes before he realized na baka nangangalay na si Lawrence sa pagiging clingy niya. Kumalas siya sa yakap at inayos ang sarili. Nakangiti lang ang kasintahan sa kanya. Malalim ang mga mata at obvious na walang matinong tulog dahil ongoing ang filming nito for his new series. Nathaniel is really touched by this thought, cradling Lawrence’s face and kissing him on the lips. Medyo nagulat pa si Lawrence, but he closes his eyes and kisses back. Nathaniel likes kissing him, likes reminding Lawrence how the trainee is head over heels with the actor.
“Thank you, Yence ko.” Bulong niya sa kasintahan, ginawaran ng halik ang noo ng artista. “Mahal na mahal kita.”
“Mahal na mahal rin kita.” Sagot ni Lawrence sa kanya. They are each other’s comfort, and the people around them know how much they mean to each other.
Sabay silang nangarap, and they both worked so hard to chase those dreams. Lawrence was watching backstage when Nathaniel performed on his debut showcase a year after that. Si Nathaniel ang kasama ni Lawrence, when the actor received a nomination on the Gawad Urian Awards for Best Supporting Actor, and Nathaniel waited for Lawrence on the night of the Awards Show, a bouquet in hand, regardless of the results.
The two of them celebrated each other quietly, yet their love is so loud when they’re together.
Nathaniel did not even attend the after-party when he won the Breakthrough Artist of the Year. Nagpasalamat lamang siya at nagmadaling umalis ng venue. Napailing na lang rin ang manager niya pero naiintindihan niya ang alaga niya. Nathaniel drove his new car to one destination he longs for– his home, Lawrence.
“Hani?” Gulat na tanong ni Lawrence when he sees his boyfriend opening the door to Lawrence’s apartment. The actor just watched the Music Award show earlier, and he cried as he watched his boyfriend receive his trophy and give his thank-you speech. Nathaniel thanked him, calling him his butterfly, and that only made him cry more.
“I’m home,” Nathaniel tells him, taking a few steps to be in Lawrence’s space, trophy in hand, giving it to Lawrence. “For you.” He whispers, embracing his boyfriend.
Lawrence has the trophy in his hand, but it hardly matters. Nathan is in his arms, hugging him like a lifeline, thanking him for staying, through it all. “Ang galing galing ng Hani ko.” he kisses the singer’s cheek, and then his nose, the side of Nathaniel’s lips.
Naglagpit ang mga mukha nila at dahan-dahang nagtagpo ang kanilang mga labi. They smile as they kiss, Nathaniel’s hand is now caressing Lawrence’s shoulder. Nilagay ng artista ang trophy sa sofa dahil baka masira iyon. Ipinikit ang mga mata para madama pa ang mga halik ni Nathaniel. Their hearts are beating fast, no words said but they both know how their love just keeps growing, and they’re in this for a very long time.
“Pwede bang manghingi ng reward?” Nathaniel asks in between their kisses, and Lawrence giggles, still kissing back. He doesn’t say yes, but his hands around Nathaniel’s neck are a clear indication of his answer. He gasps when Nathaniel kisses his lower lip and then bites them. Napasinghap siya, and the singer takes this as an invitation to deepen their kiss.
Lawrence actually yelps when han cups his thighs and carries him. Napakapit tuloy siya sa mga balikat ng kasintahan. “Nathaniel Park! Kapag ako nahulog, sinasabi ko sayo.”
“I got you, my butterfly,” Nathaniel whispers, kissing his neck, making him sigh. They share another kiss, and Nathaniel knows he’s winning in life right now. Everything is going his way.

I was overwhelmed with nostalgia (NOSTALGIA?) when I saw that article from FP (alam ko, di dapat sinusuportahan pero give niyo sa akin, mga mami), and then may nagsasbi pa na he has a kid na. And, parang gets naman, if the kid is four years old, it means na he had that kid at 26 considering na 30 na siya ngayon. Walang kaso yun, and wala naman siyang responsibilidad na ipaalam sa atin lahat. Private life niya yan so give ko talaga sa kanya yan.
Pero chismosa rin ako, kaya nandito ako sa reddit ngayon, wanting to talk to people. Kasi diba, if you’re old enough, you remember that ONE reddit thread about a Nepo baby and another artista/singer daw na magkarelasyon, but against ang pamilya nila or ang network ba yun???? Alam ko mga 2017 yun eh, and everyone knew na si Lawrence ang Nepo baby pero walang alam kung sino ang isang celebrity rin.
Naalala ko lang siya bigla with that article na nag-imply na may baby na siya. Tingin niyo nagkatuluyan sila nun? Or was it a fling? Sino kaya nakatuluyan niya?

“You have to make a decision, Lawrence.” His mother sits beside him in his bed as Lawrence stares at the envelope sent by his manager earlier. It included a lot of things, and he knows he needs to make the biggest decision of his life. “I intercepted that document and gave it to you first. I know how much your relationship with Nathaniel means to you.”
Hindi siya nagsalita at binuksan ang envelope. Ang pinakaunang nakita niya ang mga larawan nila ni Nathaniel. It was taken on numerous occasions. All taken in secret, invading their privacy. There is a written document addressing his network and Nathaniel’s entertainment agency. They were ‘informing’ them that they knew about their relationship and would publish an article in the next 48 hours. Naiiyak si Lawrence dahil alam niya ang epekto nito sa kanilang dalawa ni Nathaniel, lalo na sa nobyo niya. The singer has a clause in his contract regarding dating, stating that he is not allowed to be in a relationship while under their management. Lahat ng lakad at pagkikita nila ay takas. Nathaniel has his manager, ate Sam, helping him, and Lawrence has his own set of people he trusts. They thought they had mastered the art of dating away from the public, but clearly, they slipped.
“Si Hani, ma.” Garalgal niyang sabi, at niyakap siya ng ina. Lawrence knows that this will breach his contract, and he doesn’t want that to happen to his Hani. He’s just starting to enjoy the fruits of his labor, and kahit nga sobrang successful na ni Nathaniel ay nakakulong pa rin ito sa kontrata niya. If this gets out, Nathaniel has to pay a fine for breaching the contract, and his mother told him that they can help, but Lawrence also knows that Nathaniel will not accept anything from Lawrence’s parents.
“We can help him. You know that. I love that child like my own.” Sambit ng ina ni Lawrence, and it only makes him cry harder.
He knows that the right thing to do is tell Nathaniel and make a decision together. Pero alam ni Lawrence na kung gaano niya kamahal si Nathaniel, ay ganoon rin ang binata sa kanya. He knows for a fact that the singer would take the fall, choose an option where Lawrence will come out unscathed if he can. He does not want that. He wants Nathaniel to still have his career, his dreams, which he has been chasing and working hard for years. Lawrence will not allow anything to happen to his boyfriend’s life, even at his expense.
Lawrence chose Nathaniel that night– selfishly, with all the love in his heart.

“Hani ko!” Nakangiting bati niya nang dumating siya sa studio at nakita ang kasintahan na abalang gumagawa ng kanta kasama si Steven.
Mabilis na lumingon si Nathaniel at malapad ring ngumiti, tumayo upang salubungin siya ng yakap.
“Okay. Clock out nako. Bye, lovebirds.” Tayo rin ni Steven at nagpaalam sa kanila. Sila na lang ang natira sa studio kaya naman hinila siya ni Nathaniel sa sofa at umupo silang dalawa doon.
Agad na niyakap ni Nathaniel ang nobyo. “Maaga kayo natapos?” Malambing na tanong niya dahil ang alam niya ay ngayon ang huling filming day ni Lawrence para sa teleserye nito. Post-production na lang ang kulang and it will start airing within the month too.
Tumango si Lawrence. Nakangiti ngunit ang totoo ay ang bigat ng puso niya. “I basically am free. May media conference akong gagawin bukas pero after that, need pa mag air ang teleserye bago ako maging busy ulit.” Sagot niya, and he notices that Nathaniel is making a new song. Alam niya iyon dahil nakalabas ang notebook nito na ginagamit lang ng singer kapag gumagawa ng kanta.
“May movie si Jeongwoo, and they asked if I can create an original soundtrack for them.” Masayang sabi ni Nathaniel, and Lawrence looks at his happy boyfriend, knowing that he made the right choice.
“Are you having a hard time?” He pries, and Nathaniel sighs, clinging to Lawrence, like he’s about to recharge.
“We have the melody, but the lyrics are not coming along. They want it to be bittersweet, and I am not satisfied with what I have done.” Nathaniel explains, and Lawrence encourages him.
“I believe in you.” He utters, and it’s enough for Nathaniel to feel better. “Tuloy pala yung bakasyon namin ni mommy, Hani.” Lawrence lies, and it breaks him, but he knows he needs to do it.
Nagpaalam na siya kay Nathaniel, and his boyfriend is even so happy for him kasi matagal na ring hindi nakakapagbakasyon si Lawrence. It’s so cruel, and he knows he’s going to leave Nathaniel in so much pain, but he made the decision a month ago, and he can no longer take it back.
Hindi na nakaabot sa kampo ni Nathaniel ang mga dokomento. The article was shut down before it even happened. Lawrence’s team had a meeting with Nathaniel’s entertainment company, and they agreed not to sue the singer, continue his contract as is, if Lawrence breaks up, and stays away from him. It’s a long and gruelling discussion before they have agreed, and Lawrence cried alone in his car when it was done. His guilt is eating him up, but he also knows that ultimately, he made the right decision.
“Ah, I hope I can squeeze it in my schedule.” Nathaniel says innocently, and hindi na napigilan ni Lawrence ang umiyak. Nagpanic ang singer nang makitang umiiyak ang nobyo at agad itong niyakap ng mahigpit. “Yence? May problema ba?”
Umiling lang si Lawrence at patuloy na umiyak. He’s been so depressed, and his impending departure is making his heart ache so much. It’s not even his career. He hardly thinks about that anymore. It’s the thought of leaving the love that he only knows, and will probably be the only love he will ever experience in his lifetime. He’s already grieving for losing Nathaniel, and it hurts so much more that the singer doesn’t know. Lawrence is cruel. He knows that, knows that Nathaniel will probably hate him once he realizes that Lawrence is never coming back.
“Mahal na mahal kita.” Hagulgol niya sa mga bisig ni Nathaniel. “Mahal na mahal kita, Hani.” Pag-uulit pa niya kaya mas lalo lang hinigpitan ni Nathaniel ang pagyakap sa kanya. He can’t even tell his boyfriend the truth, and he knows it will forever stay with him.
“Yence, tell me what’s wrong. Hmm?” Nathan gently coaxes, and he shakes his head, holding Nathaniel’s face.
“Nothing. I just had a very heavy scene earlier, and it stayed with me.” He lies through his teeth, and it only makes the tears fall some more.
Lawrence is such a good actor, and so there’s only a hint of hesitation in Nathaniel’s eyes before the singer nods and believes him. “I love you too.”
They both lean in for a kiss, and Lawrence promises to love no one else but Nathaniel.

I have always wondered why some of his songs, especially the ones made after kung hindi lang rin ikaw are so bittersweet and sad. Finally reading his interview, and then this, it makes you realize that he has been through so much. He’s a phenomenal vocalist and an amazing songwriter, and him finally being free and honest makes me so proud of him. Albeit, really sad that he has to experience all of the things he can’t speak about.
We will always be here for you, Nathaniel. Your blossoms will continue to stay in your garden. And we hope that the butterfly you love can come to your garden and make you happy again.

Nathaniel looks at the time, and knows that ten pm is late for what he wants to do, pero alam rin niya na kailangan niyang gawin iyon dahil ayaw na niyang magsayang ng oras. He sees another notification from Jeongwoo asking if he already clicked the link he sent earlier, and Nathan doesn’t reply. Sa totoo lang ay hindi pa niya ito binubuksan. He has a vague idea of what’s in it, anyways. Alam niyang nasa Pilipinas na si Lawrence. Alam na niya ang impormasyon na iyon nung nakaraang buwan pa.
Sumandal siya sa upuan ng kotse niya. Pumikit at inalala ang buhay niya matapos mawala si Lawrence sa piling niya. He won’t pretend that it did not almost kill him. Nathaniel was in a very dark place, and it took his best friend and his mother crying in front of him, begging him to continue living, for him to wake up from his stupor and be the superstar that the world expects him to be. But even after that, Nathaniel is never the same again.
He went through the motion, only focusing on making music and keeping his career afloat. Nagbungga naman lahat ng iyon. He became an Asian superstar, started touring the globe, always in demand wherever he goes– his career has never been more successful, but he’s a shell of himself. Ang tagal niyang naghanap ng sagot kung bakit siya iniwan ni Lawrence nang hindi man lang nagpapaalam. He clung to alcohol and only stopped when he realized he was not only destroying his life but also the lives of the people who depended on him for a living.
Nathaniel gave himself a new purpose. Get out of his entertainment company and be free from the shackles of their cruel management. Kaya, noong nagtapos ang kontrata on 2021, he did not have any intention to renew. His refusal to sign resulted in the company being hard on him and his team. May mga lawsuits na bigla na lang hinahain, and Nathaniel spent years fighting and clearing everything up, while still maintaining his career. Lahat ng iyon ay nagawa niya dahil may kakayahan na siya. He admits that he’s able to fight his previous company because he has built a career for himself, and he has the finances now.
Tumunog na naman ang cellphone niya. This time, it’s the message he has been waiting for all night.
Nasabihan ko na siyang lumabas kasi may dadating. Good luck, anak. I am always rooting for you.
Gustong maiyak ni Nathaniel sa message. It’s from Lawrence’s mother. They have been in contact for a year now, sparingly, but it’s better than nothing. Isang taon na rin kasi mula ng manahimik ang buhay niya mula sa dating kompanya niya. It’s also the time that he learned about what happened in 2019.
Nathaniel cried the whole night when he finally discovered all the details of that night. He felt angry and betrayed– devastated that Lawrence had chosen to leave to save him and his dreams. Hindi niya alam ang gagawin, and he let himself cry for the first time in a very long time. Pero lahat ng galit at poot niya ay napalitan ng labis na pangungulila. There is not a day that he does not miss Lawrence, but he has also accepted that they probably won’t see each other again. Pero ngayon na alam na niya ang katotohanan, at meron na siyang kalayaan, biglang umusbong ang pag-asa sa puso ni Nathaniel.
Baka pwede pa. Baka pwede na.
So he finds a way to speak to Lawrence’s mother, and the very first time they met, she embraced him and told Nathaniel that it’s not his fault. It was no one’s fault but the people and the system that failed them.
And now, they’re here. He’s in front of the Gaspar’s residence at ten in the evening, waiting for Lawrence to come out. Ni hindi alam ni Nathaniel ang gagawin niya, kung ano ang sasabihin kapag nakita na niya si Lawrence, ang tanging minahal nya sa loob ng labindalawang taon. He gets out of the car before he chickens out. Wala naman sigurong tao sa paligid kaya walang makakakita sa kanya.
He stops breathing when he sees the small gate opening.
“Ma, ano ba kasi ang darating at kailangan pa ako ang kumuha? Tulog na si—“
Lawrence gasps when he sees Nathaniel in front of him.
‘Good night, anak. Be happy.’ The phone call ended, and the two of them stood there, finally seeing each other.
Six Years.
“Hani—“
Hindi na natuloy ni Lawrence ang sasabihin dahil naglalakad na papalapit sa kanya si Nathaniel at niyakap siya ng mahigpit. The world just stopped existing, and Lawrence can feel Nathaniel crying on his shoulders. The tears in his eyes started falling too. Ilang minuto rin nilang hawak ang isa’t isa. No words were uttered, just the pure need to hold each other again.
“Hani, let’s get inside.” He whispers after a while, knows they need to have a conversation, and Lawrence would rather have it inside so they can talk properly— maybe he can finally introduce Elie.
Tumango lang si Nathaniel at sabay silang pumasok sa loob ng bahay. Lawrence realizes that his mother planned this. Kaya pala nagpaalam ang mga magulang na may pupuntahan overnight. Nakasunod lang si Nathaniel sa kanya, at umiikot na ang sikmura niya dahil kitang kita sa sala ang play area ni Elie, and he does not know how to begin, but he can’t back away now.
He stops walking, and Nathaniel stops as well. Nakaharap na ulit sila sa isa’t isa, and they realize they still look at each other the same way.
“I need to tell you something.” Kinakabahang sabi niya at nakatingin pa rin si Nathaniel sa kanya. Lawrence wants to cry pero alam niyang hindi na siya makakapagsalita kung maiiyak na siya. “I’m sorry.” Nakayuko niyang sabi, at tumutulo na naman ang mga luha niya. The guilt inside him has continued to foster through the years, and now that Nathaniel is so close to the truth, he can’t help but think that he’s a cruel person, hurting Nathaniel when all he did was love him sincerely.
Naramdaman niya ang kamay ni Nathaniel sa mukha niya, touching his chin, lifting it so they can look at each other again. “Me too.” He tells Lawrence. His lips quiver at the words, and Lawrence leans in so he can feel Nathaniel’s touch.
“Iniwanan kita.” Nangingig niyang sabi, and he doesn’t know how to begin, but Nathaniel just continues to touch him, now cupping his cheeks.
“I know.” Nathan starts tearing up too. “I hated you for that, and then I realized I really can’t because I love you so much, so I started waiting, but you never came back.” The words make him sob, and Nathaniel cradles his face, pressing their foreheads together. “Alam ko kung bakit ka umalis. It took me some time to find out, but I know what you did for me.”
“I’m sorry,” Lawrence utters through his tears because he is, and he knows that it’ll take a lifetime for him not to feel guilty for what he did. Because while he knows that he will still make the same decision if he goes back in time, he also knows that he left Nathaniel broken, and all the love songs he made are evidence of how he shattered the singer’s world.
“I forgive you, Yence. I forgave you a long time ago. I can’t stay angry because you’re the only one I love. Hindi kita kayang kalimutan. Ayaw kitang kalimutan.” Nathaniel steps forward, and Lawrence feels the door on his back. “Laman ka ng bawat kantang sinulat ko. Ikaw lang ang gusto ko. Despite everything. Pagod na akong magalit, Yence. I just want to be with you, only you. I know why you made your decision. Hindi ako sang-ayon, but I know you did for me, because you loved me.” Nathaniel chokes up, and Lawrence holds the singer’s wrists, steadying his hold as they both cry.
“Love.” He corrects Nathaniel. “Hindi huminto ang pagmamahal ko sayo. Hani.” Lawrence confesses, and no words were said after that.
Nathaniel leans in for a kiss. Lawrence feels like his heart is going to explode. He has always thought that he would never have this again– Nathaniel kissing him like he’s the most important thing in the universe, but here they are. Their lips meet in a slow, deliberate motion, hungry yet still gentle, pouring all their feelings. Nathaniel continues to cradle his face, and Lawrence’s hands are now on the singer’s chest, clasping his shirt as the kiss gets deeper. Lawrence feels the doorknob digging into his back, but he kisses back with the same intensity, and when their lips finally part, he sighs and pants as they stare at each other, clearly wanting more.
Lawrence heads clear when he remembers what’s inside his house.
“Hani,” He whispers, releasing a sigh because Nathaniel is showering him with butterfly kisses. “I– I need to tell you something.” He starts, and Nathaniel just hums, still kissing him. Napapikit na si Lawrence dahil naglalakbay na ang mga labi nito sa leeg niya. He really needs to say it before he finds out another way.
“Kapag di ka tumigil baka maging kuya na si Elie.”
Now, that is not how he wanted to say that.
Napatigil ng halik si Nathaniel, napatayo ng maayos, and stares at Lawrence wide-eyed and confused. “Elie?” Naguguluhan niyang sambit sa narinig na pangalan.
“Elias Nathaniel Park.” Bulong ni Lawrence, but Nathaniel has heard him loud and clear. Parang sasabog ang puso niya ng pangalawang beses sa gabing iyon. He feels like he can no longer breathe. His heart is even beating more erratically. “I found out a month after I left.”
“W-what?” Nathaniel is still processing everything. He just got the love of his life back. What do you mean, he has a child?
Lawrence holds his hand tightly. “I’m sorry.” He says the words again, and Nathan just nods. He’s not angry, just really shell-shocked right now. “Do you want to meet him? He’s probably asleep right now, but I can take you to his room.”
Marahang tumango si Nathaniel. He doesn’t feel like himself. The reality is just dawning on him. “I have a son.” He states, not for anyone else but for him.
“You do,” Lawrence confirms. “He looks and acts just like you.” He adds, and he finally twists the doorknob so they can enter.
Pareho silang nagulat nang makitang gising pa si Elie at naa paly area niya, nakaupo habang nagbabasa ng libro. Natigilan tuloy silang dalawa sa may pintuan. Tumingala naman ang bata ng maramdaman na may ibang tao na sa paligid.
“Dada!” He exclaims, but he does not leave his seat. “I woke up because I wanted milk, but wala ka sa room mo, so I waited here.” The child explains, and then he finally notices the man beside his dada. He tilts his head, trying to remember where he’s seen the man.
“Elie, halika dito may ipapakilala ako.” Nanginginig ang boses ni Lawrence. They’re still holding hands, and he knows Nathaniel is trying his best not to cry right now.
And Lawrence is right, Nathaniel is trying not to run to Elie and break down in front of his child. He waits for the kid instead, walking towards them as Lawrence guides them to the big sofa in the middle of the living area. Lawrence asks him to sit, and so he does, just in time for Elie to arrive and stand in front of him.
Ilang segundo rin silang nagtitigan, and Nathaniel has never seen a tiny human that looks like him until now. He bets that if he pulls out a childhood picture now, he will prove his point, but that can wait. Elie is still looking at him, analyzing his face.
“Elie, baby–”
Sumilay ang napakalaking ngiti sa mukha ni Elie kaya natigil ang pagsasalita ni Lawrence. “Daddy!” He screams as he jumps into Nathaniel’s arms, hugging his father, who’s clearly taken aback. Pero agad rin itong tumalima at niyakap pabalik si Elie, and before anyone can say anything, Nathaniel finally lets out a sob, then fully cries as he hugs his Elie.
Naiyak na rin si Lawrence, and Elie pulls away to look at Nathaniel’s crying face, confused. “Bakit umiiyak ka, daddy?”
Agad namang pinunasan ni Nathaniel ang mga luha niya. “I’m just so happy to finally see and hold you.” Elie giggles at this, parang sasabog na rin ang puso ni Lawrence.
“Are you done with work? Dito ka na stay sa amin?” He innocently asks, and Nathaniel nods.
“Yes, dito na ako sa inyo.” Pagsang-ayon niya. He pulls Lawrence with his free hand too, so he can join the family embrace. Lawrence is thankful that he has introduced Nathaniel to Elie through pictures. Kapag nagtatanong rin ito ay kinikwento niya ang mga alaala niya kasama si Nathaniel. In retrospect, it shows that he wants them to meet. Lawrence longed for a complete family, and telling their child about Nathaniel was one way to cope.
Nathaniel wants to keep on hugging his family, but Elie has another plan. Umalis ito sa pagkakayakap at tumakbo papuntang play area.
“I’ll play you a song!” He exclaims, and Nathaniel looks like he wants to cry again.
“Daddy knows how to play.” Sambit naman ni Lawrence na marahang tinapik si Nathaniel para puntahan ang anak nila na namamanghang naghihintay sa kanya. He does, of course, and the two of them sit down in front of a small keyboard.
This time, si Lawrence na naman ang lumuluha.
“You like playing?” Nathaniel asks gently. Elie is now in his lap as he plays a nursery rhyme. Mabilis na tumango si Elie, and the child starts telling him about his lessons. Nathaniel promised to teach him, and Elie kissed his dad’s cheek.
Lawrence wipes the tears in his face, at patuloy na pinagmasadan ang mag-ama niya. He knows Elie needs to sleep pero di niya kayang patigilin ito. Lalo na at nakikita niya kung gaano sila kasaya. They’ll just deal with the consequences later.
“Dada! Marunong si daddy mag guitar. He can teach me.” Their child exclaims, and he chuckles, nodding and listening to their conversation. Nathaniel is already planning and telling Elie he’s also going to buy him instruments.
“Yence, come here, please.” Tawag sa kanya ni Nathaniel. He looks overwhelmed, and at this point, lahat sila overwhelmed na talaga. He makes his way to them and sits beside Nathaniel, and they watch Elie play another children's song for them. Nagtagpo ang mga mata nila ni Nathaniel at oinagdikit ang kanilang mga balikat.
“Thank you, Hani. I love you.” Lawrence whispers, and Nathan leans in to kiss his shoulder.
“I love you.” He whispers back, and they have so much to talk about, but right now, their son’s rendition of Itsy Bitsy Spider.

Okay, so si Nathaniel Park and Jay Lawrence Gaspar. How do we even begin to discuss this? First of all, wala pang official statement from either side pero sobrang obvious ng photos na pinost sa X. May pictures rin na magkayakap sila at picture na pumasok si Nate sa bahay ni Law.
If that’s not an indication of a relationship, then baka super friends sila? Hahahahha Pero it all makes sense if you think about it. Nathaniel has recently opened up about his only love, and he has hinted that he’s going to pursue him during his well-deserved break. And the timing??? Bumalik din sa Pilipinas si Lawrence (with his alleged son), and grabe namang coincidence yarn.
Tapos you also realize na kaya pala close friends si Jeongwoo at Lawrence dahil ang common denominator nila ay si Nathaniel. Na-issue pa nga sila dati kasi lagi silang magkasama. Hahahahha Ang ending nandoon pala lahat si Nathaniel no? The realizations, mgs marites.
Noon ding 2017, sinabi din sa thread na ang longterm boyfriend ni nepo baby (si Lawrence) ay hindi artista kung hindi singer….they’ve been telling us all along. Hindi lang talaga natin na connect ang dots.
Alam mo ba ang biggest realization ko as a retired everlawsting? Sobrang hilig ni Lawrence sa butterflies. May interview siya dati na ang sabi niya ang ideal date daw niya ay sa isang butterfly conservatory. Meron ring video somewhere sa youtube kung saan pinakita niya ang kwarto niya at may butterfly corner siya dun….

Lawrence has read the things shared on social media. It doesn’t help that his friends keep sending him screenshots of things they find funny. Siguro kung nangyari ito six years ago ay nagpanic na siya at hindi alam ang gagawin, but the circumstances are different now. It does not bother him too much, and Nathaniel has assured him that they’re going to talk about what to do after he returns from his rehearsals.
Nalaman rin niya na sobrang offline ni Nathaniel dahil nalaman lang nito ang post sa X at ang reddit threads nung pinakita ito lahat ni Lawrence. The singer tells him that he knew about it because his manager, ate Sam, told him. They know the news outlets have picked it up, but everything is still afloat, kasi nga, wala pa silang sinasabi. Ang tanging sinigurado lang nila ay ang safety ni Elie. Their son is attending daycare and music lessons, so they just have to talk to the academy, and they were promised confidentiality.
Bumukas ang pinto at nakita niya ang pagod na mukha ni Nathaniel. “Tulog na si Elie?” Tanong nito at agad na umupo at niyakap si Lawrence. He reciprocates and they stay like that for a while.
The last few days were very hectic. Lawrence found himself moving all their things into Nathaniel’s house. They have settled in, and Elie is very happy with his own bedroom and his own music room too. Hindi niya alam paano ginawa ni Nathaniel, but in just two days, ay nakalipat na sila at nasa iisang bahay na.
“Oo, napagod kakapractice ng gitara.” He tells the singer na ngayon ay nakasiksik na sa leeg niya. May pinagmanahan talaga si Elie. Lawrence wants to tell Nathaniel to slow down with the purchases for their son’s hobby, but he doesn’t because he knows the singer is trying to make up for lost time.
“Pagkatapos talaga ng concert ko next month, mas marami na akong time magturo sa kanya.” Bulong ni Nathaniel na nagsisimula ng humalik sa leeg ni Lawrence. Kinurot tuloy niya ito. “Kiss lang eh.” Reklamo nito.
Ngumuso naman si Lawrence dahil kiss lang yan tapos hindi na yan kiss in a few minutes. “Kilala kita, Hani.” He says, but he doesn’t really stop Nathaniel, who’s now kissing his jaw. “We have to talk about the thing.”
He hears Nathaniel sigh, clearly not wanting to stop. “Do you want an announcement?” He asks Lawrence.
Umiling si Lawrence. He’s a private citizen now, so as much as possible, he does not want to appear in public. Don’t get him wrong, he loved it years ago, and he thrived in being in the spotlight. Pero iba na ngayon. He’s a different person now, and all he wants is a quiet life with his lover and son, but he also acknowledges that Nathaniel is still a public figure.
“You have to, though. For your fans, at least.” He states, and Nathaniel agrees. Ang dami pa niyang plano sa totoo lang. Kakadating lang ng singsing pinabili pa niya sa manager niya, and he plans to propose after the concert. He doesn’t want to waste time anymore. He also knows that he needs to inform his fans too.
It’s a really good thing that they have already informed the public about his hiatus after the concert, and the introduction of his feelings through that interview. It makes things easier, and it’s only possible because they planned ahead. He has always known that he would pursue Lawrence again. Bonus talaga yung may anak pala sila.
“Can I make it after the concert? I would like to begin my rest with that.” Nathaniel informs him, and he’s truly okay with that. “They can discuss all they want, and it hardly matters because you two are here with me, and that’s what’s most important for me.”
“Hani ko.” Bigkas niya kaya naman napatingala si Nathaniel at nagtagpo ang mga mata nila. “Thank you so much. You don’t know how much this means to me, to still have your love.”
Nathaniel sits up so he can properly lean in and give Lawrence a full kiss. He melts into the kiss and sighs when they part, forehead pressed together. “You will always have me, and I know I’ll always have you too.”
“Mahal kita, Hani.” Lawrence gives the singer a peck. Nathaniel kisses him again.
“Mahal rin kita, Yence.” Tugon ni Nathaniel. Isang halik pa sa labi. “Tulog na ba talaga si Elie?”
Natawa si Lawrence sa tanong pero tumango pa rin siya. “Oo nga.”
May sasabihin pa sana siya pero hinahalikan na naman siya ni Nathaniel.
