Chapter 1: The Beginning

Chapter Text

Mary Bell Township. A middle-of-nowhere town in New Jersey, with a population that was barely 4 digits. But the whole population doesn't matter, as this story focuses on 4 people. Neil O'Connor, the pastor for the local church, his wife Stella, God—yes, the holy father—and a skeleton. Sans the skeleton, to be specific.

It was a particularly chilly Autumn afternoon the day he moved into the small town. At first, Stella was a little unnerved, as she’d never seen a skeleton in person, but Neil was mostly unbothered.

Mostly.

After a few weeks, Stella would eventually warm up to the stocky skeleton, often inviting him over to their house to simply chat, or bake something. Neil was, of course, not fond of his WIFE spending most of her time with another man, but he brushed it off. “It’s nothing”, he told himself. “Just a friend, nothing more”. Despite his self-reassurances, the Reverend simply couldn't shake the odd feeling he felt when the bag of bones was around.

Was it rage? Jealousy? He didn't know. And when he didn't know what to do, he turned to God.

Late one night, Neil quietly crept out of his bed, making his way to the church. Kneeling at his altar, he prayed to God for guidance, for help, for ANYTHING.

…And to his shock, or perhaps delight, he got an answer.

A direct answer.

The heavens cast a light down upon him, and down from the heavens descended God Himself, standing before the reverend in all His holiness. Neil, upon opening his eyes, jumped back. His lord and savior was standing right before him!

“You requested help, O’Connor?” Asked the Father, His voice seeming to echo throughout the church. “I-I…” Neil could barely speak. “I…I did, yes, my lord…” God sat before him as Neil stayed in his kneeling position. “Tell me, my dear, what exactly are you asking for help with?” He asked softly, looking down at Neil curiously.

“W-Well, I…There’s…There's this…guy. Well, I wouldn't say GUY, he's a–" "A skeleton?” God interrupted, already knowing what Neil was talking about. He was omniscient, after all. “Y-Yeah…” God nodded, smiling softly. “I see. My dear, have you considered that you may love him?” Neil sputtered, bright red. HIM? In love with the SKELETON?! The very idea was absurd at the very least! The Reverend Neil O'Connor was a completely heterosexual man! No ifs or buts! ….But, he really couldn't deny that odd feeling he felt when Sans glanced over at him.

It reminded him of when he met Stella for the first time.
