They're Her Family Now

Summary:

Leaving on her Pokemon Journey at 18 years old, a pre-transition Trans Woman learns to find love in her Pokemon and learns how to love herself as she tries to become a successful Pokemon Trainer

Notes:

This is different from what I normally write since I prefer to write RWBY stuff
I just came up with this idea and really latched onto it because while writing the kind of rough draft of this fic's concept, I actually started crying

I'm a trans girl myself and I wish I could do something like this so bad, just leave everything behind to go on a journey where I can make friends and learn how to battle with pokemon, and become close with my pokemon themselves!

The idea of having a big loving family, even if it's your own pokemon, is very appealing to me

So sorry for this not being a RWBY fic

Chapter 1: Her Journey Begins

Chapter Text

Her day begins almost normally, with the only exception being the alarm waking her up from her sleep.

She almost doesn't take a shower, nor shave her facial hair, too low energy after a night of worrying and planning. However, she somehow manages to muster up just enough to do so with the knowledge of what's going to be happening today.

She gets dressed in her usual clothing, a dark shirt, a hoodie, and jeans. She stares in the mirror, contemplating whether or not she should do anything with her messy, damp hair, trying to avoid looking at her face the entire time, before she finally leaves the bathroom.

She grabs her bag, full of mostly everything she needs, her phone, a few changes of clothes, some camping supplies, an old Mareep plushie, some snacks, and all of her money saved up from the past five or so years.

She stares at her room, sparse as it is, with a lack of almost any decoration other than a flower pot with a succulent on the windowsill.

She had thought that she would feel something about leaving behind the room that she's lived in for 18 years, but she can't really muster up any kind of emotion.

With a sigh, she slips her backpack over her shoulders, walking softly down the hallway and the steps, avoiding the spots that she knows creak the most.

"Leaving without saying goodbye to us?"

She grimaces and turns to her parents, who seem to have been sitting on the couch and waiting for her.

"Uh...I didn't want to wake either of you up, and I wanted to get started early...it's a long way to Striation City after all..."

She hopes that they believe her excuse, not wanting to ruin a day that's barely just begun with another argument with her parents.

"Are you sure you want to do this? There's that nice school you could go to in Driftveil instead..." Her mother speaks in that same faux concern that she usually does when this topic comes up.

She holds back a sharp retort and instead calmly replies, "I'm very sure. I'm going to get going now since I'm sure that Professor Juniper is waiting for me."

Her father frowns, "Make sure to give us a call every now and then, son. Your mother and I are going to miss you."

"I'll make sure to do that."

Walking to the Professor's Lab, she somehow manages a small smile at the thought of finally being able to leave her hometown and finally getting her own pokemon!

Her parents have pokemon, sure, but they didn't seem to ever really want to be around her, not that she can blame them.

Either way! From everything she's heard, a starter pokemon normally sticks with their trainer for life, at least if they treat them well. And she's going to take care of her new pokemon as best as she can!

She stops walking as she approaches the door to the Lab, realizing that this is the first time in years that she's felt excited!

She's not sure what her choices of starters could be, but hopefully, one of them will like her.

For a moment, her mood nearly dips down again, but she forces that thought away with a few steps forward and the opening of the Lab's door.

Her eyes can't help but track the swishing and bouncing tail in front of her as she stares at her new pokemon walking down the dirt path.

When she had entered the Professor's Lab, she had expected at least one of the typical Unovan starter pokemon to be there, but there was only her, a small, adorable little Eevee.

The Eevee nearly jumped on her the moment that she saw her, so of course, she knew she was going to pick her, but she hadn't thought the Eevee would have to be her only choice.

For the first hour or so, Eevee seemed content to cuddle up in her arms as she walked, but eventually hopped out of her arms to look around the path and do some walking herself.

Eevee suddenly breaks out into a run that makes her panic for a moment until she suddenly stops running. She's thankful that Eevee only seemed to have wanted to look at some fallen tree branches on the road.

"Don't get too far ahead. I don't want to lose you." She internally cringes at the sound of her own voice, something that she doesn't tend to use that often.

Something that she realizes that she's going to have to use a lot more often as a pokemon trainer.

Eevee scrambles back toward her and jumps up into her arms, "EeeE!" The pokemon begins nuzzling against her neck and chest, and it causes a giggle to come out of her mouth.

"What was that for?!" Her own small smile is met with her Eevee's happy little face, which only stares back at her.

When night falls, she struggles to put the tent up while Eevee watches on with confusion. It takes her the better part of half an hour to get it up and stay up, but when she's done, she's able to sit down and take a moment to rest.

Seeing Eevee push open the tent, she explains, "That's where we're going to be sleeping tonight!"

Eevee pokes her head out of the tent.

"Vee?" She points a paw at herself with a tilted head.

She tilts her own head in confusion, "Yeah, you too! Where else would I have you sleep?"

Eevee pads over and places a paw on the pokeball on her belt, staring up at her.

"I'm not going to make you sleep in your pokeball..." She then looks back at her pokemon's cute face, "Unless you want to."

Somewhat surprisingly, Eevee shakes her head and bunts her head against her arm. Such a cute display makes it almost impossible to give the pokemon scratches under her chin.

She smiles once again as she runs her fingers through her pokemon's fur.

It's only really then that she comes to the realization that she should probably give her Eevee a name. She keeps that in her mind as she grabs the small amount of pokefood that the Professor gave to her before she left, only enough to last the trip to the next town over.

She pours it out into a small bowl and watches as Eevee quickly starts gobbling up the food. Too exhausted to make something for herself, she instead grabs a couple of snacks from her bag and eats until she's only just not hungry anymore.

"Would you like me to give you a name?" Her Eevee lifts her head from her nearly empty food bowl and then chirps a happy noise with her puffy tail wagging.

"Alright...What about...Cutiepie?"

She grins as Eevee bats at her with a paw and makes a noise akin to a high-pitched bark.

"You are a little cutie pie, though. Would you prefer me to call you Pretty or Beautiful?"

The reaction this time is much milder, with the pokemon staring at her, nearly stock still with wide eyes.

Slightly unsure, she offers, "I could call you....."

She looks around the small clearing, trying to find any inspiration for a fitting name for her new companion. It's not until she looks up at the night sky that her mind sparks with an idea.

She tilts her head back down to face the expectant look of her pokemon and asks, "Does Venus sound like a good name? It's the name of a planet, but also of an ancient goddess of beauty and love."

"EevEE!"

She's suddenly tackled onto the forest floor by Venus, excitedly licking her face. She tries to tell Venus to stop, but she's also giggling too much to say much of anything.

"I'm going to guess that you really like that name." She jokes, petting the still very happy-looking Eevee.

"Vee!" Venus points a paw at her.

"What about me? My name?"

Venus bobs her head in confirmation and then sits down, staring expectantly at her once again.

Her deadname nearly slips out of her mouth, but she stops herself as she opens it. In its stead, she says the name that she chose for herself years ago.

"My name is Eve."

The name is foreign to hear out loud, but it makes her tear up when she sees Venus light up at her words.

"EEV!"

Eve giggles and smiles at her partner, "Yeah, that's me."
