In The Mountains of Hokkaido

Summary:

The best day of his life had been a vision in his mind for years. Surrounded by love and laughter. He had always wanted to be under a clear and open sky when he got married, and where they had picked was even better. In the mountains of Hokkaido with trees full of red, tangerine, and saffron. His mother had made his suit, the invites were sent out a hear in advance, and loved ones from all around would be in the crowd to see Katsuki shed a tear or two.

It would have been the perfect day.

It should have been the perfect day.

Or; hero work gets in the way of their wedding 36 times.

Notes:

I worked really hard on this, and I feel like I’ve grown a lot since my first fic! I can’t wait to see what you all think!

Work Text:

The best day of his life had been a vision in his mind for years. Surrounded by love and laughter. He had always wanted to be under a clear and open sky when he got married, and where they had picked was even better. In the mountains of Hokkaido with trees full of red, tangerine, and saffron.

The colors were so vibrant, it would be hard to believe they existed if you weren’t seeing them in person. It was a beautiful venue they had discovered by accident when they crashed a wedding while hiking. There was a nice view of a lake behind the alter as well, which he loved.

His mother had made him a white suit with a top that flared out at the bottom, a satin belt that was the width of his waist, and a shoulder cape. There was also lace sewn into the bottom and trailing up on everything. It was her most prized creation, for she had spent weeks making it one of a kind by hand. She also ensured to make the gloves that also contained the lace pattern fire proof because she knew her son couldn’t control it when he was happy. His palms made little sparks whenever he got too emotional, but Eijirou surly didn’t mind. He just smiled and kissed Katsuki’s palms.

The invites were beautiful and were sent out a year prior to the event, which allowed for most of their friends to come. People he had grown up with, gone to war with, and had watched his and Eijirou’s love bloom would be sitting in the crowds cheering them on. Izuku would be his best man, and Kaminari would’ve been Ei’s. They had spent weeks trying to figure out if he or Mina would’ve been a better match, but they made her the flower woman with Eri.

In the crowd would be his parents and Eijirou’s moms would be crying as they watched them exchange their vows. They would say their speeches about how anazing Eijirou is, and how happy they are that he had met Katsuki. They would talk about how unexpected, yet perfect their love was for hours. He would pretend that he didn’t care, but he’s sure he’d tear up.

They would have kissed, truly, in front of everyone for the first time. Because Katsuki would be ok showing his love. Because this was their moment. They would dance, eat, cut cake, cheer, and kiss some more. He had been dreaming about this down to the last detail ever since that ring went on his finger.

He was Katsuki-fucking-Bakugou and he didn’t half ass anything, especially not his marriage to the love if his life.

It would have been the perfect day.

It should have been the perfect day.

However, he and Eijirou both couldn’t take off, so his what-would-have-been-husband was off saving the city. It was utter bullshit. He couldn’t believe he was sitting on the couch of their hotel suite alone with dying flowers in a vase on the coffee table. There were roses trailing from the entrance to the bedroom from the night before, and the kitchen still smelled of cookies.

They were both so excited to finally be tied to each other. Smiling until their faces hurt. Eijirou kissing Katsuki’s cheeks, his nose, the corner of his mouth. Katsuki feeding him dough and swatting his hand away when he tried to steal more. Every small moment had been a small release of the overwhelming anticipation of finally, finally, being married.

Katsuki pouts and pulls out his phone. His clicks Eijirou’s contact and presses call. It rings about two times before Eijirou answers.

“Hey, baby,” Eijirou’s voice is laces with a deep level of exhaustion that took days of rest to fully get rid of. “I’m sorry this is taking so long. We have to do one last sweep of the rumble to make sure we got everyone.”

“When will you be back? The wedding was set for ten minutes ago.” Katsuki huffs into the phone. He’s not mad at Eijirou, and the other knew that. He was just frustrated at the circumstances.

There is a pause on the other end of the line. He can hear the crashing of rubble against concrete and the movement of machinery and heros.

“I-I don’t know, Kats,” He sighs and Katsuki can hear his tired rumble through the phone. “More bodies keep getting discovered and I have to help clear the rubble.”

Katsuki was a hero. He wanted to save people more than anything, so it’s not the victims he mad at either. He’s upset that he can’t just marry the love of his life.

“The venue said we could move it to tomorrow since they don’t get a lot of business in the fall,” Katsuki muttered begrudgingly. He didn’t truly want to move the date, but the love of his life was out saving people. He was doing what he was passionate about, and he couldn’t be mad about that.

“Really? Baby, you know we don’t have to do that. I told everyone to just wait until we told them. I can hurry up here and-“

“No, Ei. Don’t rush shit like that. They need you. People’s lives rely on you, and that’s more important than this wedding. I don’t mind. It just gives us more time to prepare. The only difficult thing to change is the honeymoon.”

“Yeah..I was looking forward to Bali, but I don’t think they’ll mind if we’re a tad late,” Katsuki can practically hear the proud smirk of the other through the phone as he says the next part. “Besides, I had a feeling this would happen, so I paid for a few extra nights. Even if things we out way, we could’ve relaxed a bit longer.

Katsuki’s heart melts as his husband expresses his thoughtfulness. Things tended to go wrong, so they had learned to be prepared for every circumstance. Hell, Katsuki had gauze in his bag for when Eijirou accidentally slices one of their lips.

“I’ll text everyone and tell them we moved it to tomorrow. Just..come home soon, Sap.” He murmurs.

“I love you, Kats.”

“I love you too, idiot.”

He hangs up the phone and wipes a stray tear that was rolling down his cheek. He gets up from the couch and walks to the kitchen to begin the ruthless cycle of stress baking. He picked up the hobby after his heart injury. He needed to find ways to calm himself down that didn’t put as much of a strain on his body.

By the time Eijirou got home, the tables and counters were lined with pastries of all sorts. Madeleines, strawberry rose cream tarts, caramel hazelnut crunch tarts, macaroons, and easy stuff like cookies from when Katsuki had finally calmed down to just needing to move his hands.

Eijirou walks over and takes one of the macaroons. He takes a bite and moans at the explosion of flavor. He loved Katsuki’s cooking and baking. He would eat whatever his fiancé made without question. “Fuckkk” Be groans in appreciation as he eats a few more.

His gaze then turns to where Katsuki was passed out on the couch. He sighs with caring eyes. He walks over, careful not to stomp as to not wake his fiancé up. He bends down to give him a gentle kiss on the forehead.

“I’m home,” He murmurs softly, lowering himself to take a knee by the edge of the couch.

Katsuki stirs with a small whine. Eijirou smiles softly at the sight of the absolute power house of a man acting like a kitten. He reaches up and pokes the other in the cheek with a toothy grin.

“Let’s get you to bed, hm?” He gently scoops the other up and carries him to their lush bed.

Katsuki wakes up with steady arms wrapped around him. It’s nice and warm. The warmth he had gotten used to after eight years.

He turns around in his arms and looks up at Eijirou. The man’s long hair frames his face as he peacefully sleeps with his lips slightly open. He can see a little point of one of his teeth through the gap, and he can’t help but smile.

He leans up and places a gentle kiss on his chin, then his cheek, then his nose, and then his forehead. All of the movement caused a small, tired groan from the larger man.

“Good mornin’, baby,” Eijirou whispers into their bubble of buzzing, seraphic love. His eyes flutter open and peach meets a violent crimson.

“Are you ready?” Katsuki sits up and stretches enough to pop his back. They had so much to do, so he had been antsy all night. His bones were still practically vibrating as he thought up a mental list.

Eijirou sits up behind him and places his head on the other’s shoulder. He slides his strong arms around Katsuki’s waist and pulls him close.

Mhm.” He hums and places a kiss on Katsuki’s shoulder. “We’re about to have to get up and such.”

“Come on, idiot. He have a lot to do other than laying in bed all day. Get up!” Katsuki crawls out of bed and strides to their bathroom.

There was a shower big enough for the two of them in their suite, which was nice. Katsuki was the first one in with Ei following close behind. When they’re both in, Eijirou pulls Katsuki close under the warm water. They stand there for a bit under the warm water before Katsuki turns around. They takes turns washing eachother’s hair and massaging the soap into their tired skin. Katsuki especially took his time with Eijirou because he knew how much he had strained his body the day prior.

After their shower, they put on temporary outfits. Katsuki makes breakfast for them and watches happily as Eijirou chows down. He loves watching as the other fills himself up because it meant he was well taken care of. It was relaxing to bask in the smell of fresh pancakes and eggs before a day Katsuki knew would be stressful.

They make their way to the venue where they meet with their main people to get ready. Izuku, Ochako, his mother, and Tsunagu would be helping Katsuki get ready, while TetsuTetsu, Kaminari, Sero, and Mina would help Eijirou.

Katsuki’s outfit took more work to put together. There were intricate details that could be messed up if not added properly, so his mother and Jeanist made sure to perfect everything. Izuku was there to keep him from crying so he didn’t ruin his make up, and Ochako did his make up. It wasn’t too much. Just eyeliner and beautiful, glittering shades of pearl on his eyelids. Despite it’s surface level simplicity, it still added a level of regalness to the Bakugou name.

It was easier for Eijirou to get ready. Or, it would’ve been. Instead, he was crying about how amazing the man he was going to marry and how he’d dreamt of this day since Kamino. Mina and Kaminari were making fun of him, while TetsuTetsu and Sero were trying to get him to just put his damn suit on. After a while, they finally got him ready.

Standing in front if the mirror, Eijirou couldn’t help but beam. Today was the day.

Katsuki couldn’t help but do the same as his mother rubbed his shoulder and tried to pretend like she wasn’t about to cry. He was trying not to either, as it would trigger half of the people in the room to follow.

They were so close to when they would finally tie the knot. Katsuki was taking his position, Eijirou was shaking off his nerves, and the crowd of close friends had silenced.

The clock ticked down slowly. Too slow. They were so close. Katsuki’s hands popped little sparks as he struggled to contain his adrenaline.

The ceremony is just about to start when…

Half of the heros get alerts that there is a high threat villian in the area. Of course, being trained to and having made and oath, they spring into duty. Of these heros, Eijirou and Izuku had to go as well. This left Katsuki alone once more as another villain interferes with the best day of his live. His expression grows grim, for he was not mad…just upset.

It would’ve been better if he was called to the scene as well, but his quirk wouldn’t be useful against a villian like this. Yes, he could’ve absolutely taken the crook down, but it would result in a lot of damage. So, once more, he was by himself at his wedding ceremony.

This cycle of getting called to pursue villians continues. They have to reschedule the ceremony 36 times before Katsuki decides that he can’t take it anymore.

A couple weeks later, when they both called out to a simple mission that doesn’t require much work, Katsuki grabs him and all but drags him to the middle of the crowd where an officiant was standing. This was one of the few times where he was able to get ready and was prepared before having to cancel, so he was in no mood to push their union back more.

They stand infront of the chaos and say their vows. They tell stories of when they first fell in love, and they tell of the hardship that the thought of the other had helped them get through. It was beautiful, and half of their guests were crying and/or recording for those who couldn’t make it. No one would’ve expected for Katsuki to find this type of love. Something so unconditional and comforting. Someone who gave his love with no walls, yet understood how to see past Katsuki’s.

While their official marriage happened in the middle of chaos, they were able to try again the next year.

They do everything perfectly this time, or as perfect as they can do.

The vision in his mind came true for the most part, but the imperfections made it even better. Surrounded by love and laughter. They were under the clear and open sky as they vowed to stay by on another until death decided to separate them. However, no one is sure even death could stop them as they showed overwhelming amounts of love in front of the world unconditionally. In the mountains of Hokkaido with trees full of red, tangerine, and saffron. The vibrant colors lit up the two, shades of orange and red dancing across their skin to create a scene no one would be able to forget.

It was the best day of his life.
