Something Real

Summary:

Maddy needs someone right now.

Work Text:

Maddy stumbled through the door to the outside, drink still in hand.

The party is too fucking loud.

Everything. Is too fucking loud.

But the pounding music fades to the back of her mind as she sits down on the step with Rue.

“Hey, Maddy, you, uh, enjoying the party?” She slurs. Rue seems sad. She’s always a little..sad, and Maddy knows this well.

“No. It’s too fucking loud.” Maddy huffs.

The cloud of smoke from Rue’s cigarette drifts over to her, so Maddy offers up her hand for her to hand it over.

Rue does so wordlessly, and Maddy hands it back after a long drag.

“I get that.” Rue replies after a while. “Did your date leave, too?”

The glitter from her eyeshadow smudges as she absently rubs over one eye.

“Yeah, he’s gone.” Maddy responds. “Yours?”

“She’s..yeah, she’s gone. She’s not coming back.” Rue gazes off to the woods behind the house.

“That really sucks.”

This is as close as Maddy lets herself get to any ‘I’m sorry’s’. It just is the way things are.

“Yeah..” Rue glances across to Maddy, who’s leaned in just a little closer. “So, uh, about..did you believe me..?”

“Rue,” Maddy takes her hand in her own, smiling the best she can- despite the circumstances. “You’re one of my best friends. Of course, I believed you. I know you don’t lie about things like that…I know you would tell me the truth.”

A soft heat rises up to Rue’s face, starting at her nose. Maddy has looked at her for too long like that. Just holding the gaze a bit..too long.

“Hey, Maddy?” Rue gulps nervously. Maddy’s fingers are still interlocking around her own in her lap.

“Yes?”

“Were you..were you trying to kiss me just now?” Rue dares to ask.

Maddy takes another light swig of her drink while she thinks the question over.
“Mm, yeah. Guess I was.”

“You can kiss me if you want to, it’s ok.” Rue responds softly. “I wanted somebody to kiss right now, too.”

Without thinking, Maddy lunges for her. Aggressively- their lips meet as Maddy reaches for Rue’s neck to pull her closer.

Her bottle clinks down the steps, already long forgotten about in the darkness.

“Maddy?” Rue questions, but she reciprocates the kisses as lightly as she can.

“I..I’m sorry. I don’t know what the hell’s gotten into me.” Maddy hisses back. “I just wanted something..real. That’s all I want.”

“I know.” Rue whispers, her back leaning against the edge of the step as Maddy pushes herself closer.

Now, maybe Maddy doesn’t know everything in the world. But she does know one thing deep in her heart.

Rue is not Nate.

And Nate is not Rue.

And everything that Nate likes and dislikes, Rue is not that same way.

This is why Maddy feels safe enough to feel so..passionate about the situation.

She nips and licks relentlessly, savoring Rue’s skin like it’s a last meal.
“You’re so..much different than him.” She accidentally mumbles, but Rue hears.

And Rue knows, so that’s what’s important.

“I know.” Rue smooths both hands up Maddy’s bare forearms as Maddy aims to explore her body.

Not hard, not like Nate- Maddy contours down Rue’s breast and to her side, finding a nice place to hold over her hip.

“You’re just so..real to me.” Maddy’s breath ripples along Rue’s face as she pulls away for only a moment.

Rue isn’t sure how to respond to that. She doesn’t exactly feel real. Nothing does anymore..

The only thing Rue can think to do is dip her head forward to kiss Maddy some more. It’s good for her, she thinks. Maddy needs things like this sometimes.
