Work Text:
Morgan can pride herself on many things. Raising her kids with a great support system, working as a kickass consulate for the police department, and a fashion sense that rivals Cher. One of those things she couldn't take in pride in was taking care of herself. Was it because she was so use to taking care of herself with little help? Probably. But, she should at least try to do better and accept help. She even knew that if she didn't, her mind would metaphorically exploded.
The warning signs were there as the normal chaos started her day. Smells being stronger than normal. Lights being piercing. Spots blurring her vision. However, she pushed them as aside to focus on the kids and the case.
She even pulled back on her Morgan powers which was the biggest red flag. It wasn't until the entire team minus Karadec was gone for various tasks that the first wave hit. The pain almost caused her tip over. That is when she had to acknowledge the truth.
After two weeks of chaos (including almost dying with Karadec; she even had to do cpr on him) and working sixty hours both of them, Morgan's mind was heading there.
Migraine station and the next stop was pain.
She was going to be utterly sick and usual. Out of all the days to forget her migraine kit; well, time for plan b. She began to head to the soft room. Thankful that her partner was also distracted for the moment, she made her way into the room.
Her next mistake was letting the door close too loud. It sent her to the floor. Fuck this wasn't good.
Using the last little bit of strength she had, Morgan crawled onto the couch, texted Lodo the situation and putting a pillow on her head.
The room was quiet and if that wasn't a warning bell Adam didn't know what was. Especially since his Morgan became a wonderful wreaking ball into his life, noise came with it.
He had to go find her before she accidently caused some chaos. He went to the soft room first and found her on the couch. That was disappointing and little funny though, he never tell her that.
"Oh Morgan," he groaned, "this is not time for a nap." He stopped over to her and pulled the pillow off her head. Then she did something that he never wanted to hear again.
She whimpered. The kind of whimper that someone is steps away from crying.
Oh crud, radio static; he had to do something. Then, he did a dumb decision. He threw the pillow back at her head. She of course caught it but, only after it bounced off her face.
"Ow."
She is pain and he just was the asshole that made it worse.
"What's going on? Did someone do this to you? Do we need an ambulance," he quietly asked in rapid fire.
"Migraine, just myself so down boy, and big no. What I need is my migraine bag that is in the living room of my house."
"Then, I am taking you home."
"Karadec, you -"
"In addition to want and will be, I have to because you are my partner and I have failed in making sure you were okay. So, please let me do this especially since we are 0-2 with you saving my life. I know it isn't the same but, I know you take care of yourself last so let me take the reins, okay?"
"Okay."
"Good. Now, slip your one arm around my shoulder so, I can help you up."
She does as he requests and they are able to get up right. She ends up finding success in shielding the light away by hiding her head in Adam's shoulder.
"Karadec, I need this-" Soto said as she entered the room. She took in the situation and the detective clearly panicking before him.
He sent her a simple text before shoving his phone back in his back into his pocket.
"I'm taking her home."
Soto looked at her before looking back at him. She gave him a thumbs up. That was all he needed before all but carrying his partner out of there.
Adam did everything in his power to make the ride home comfortable. No talking or gps. Windows were up. He even let her wear his sunglasses. But, there is only so much you can do against a migraine.
Thankfully, he got them to her house quickly along with inside with little exposure to the outside elements.
"Where are the kids," he asked.
"They are with Lodo tonight. Thank the lord; I love them, but they can be loud."
She doesn't see it but his simile softens.
Anyway, unromantically, she leads her through the mess that is her house to her bedroom. She had never been more proud of herself for deep cleaning her bedroom. She laid down on the bed.
"Which item would you like first," Karadec asked.
She looked at him shocked. When did he managed to grab it?
"You said where it was so, I grabbed on the way over," he explained simply.
Touched, "The meds first please."
He does what she asks until they go through everything in the bag. She was in the eye of the hurricane right now. He didn't need to see the other side until she was better.
"Do you need anything else?"
She whispers no; she would've shook her head but, that would've made it worst.
"Okay, I will leave you be."
Morgan couldn't respond. He quietly shut the door leaving her in silence. Unfortunately, the pain didn't take the memo and stayed. After a million years, she passed out into thankful bliss.
The next time Morgan opened her eyes, the room was completely pitch black. Glancing at her phone, it told her to be midnight. Deciding that she should at least try to eat something, she shuffled into the kitchen. The brightness from the fridge let started the entire pain cycle again so no dice on food. Morgan glanced into the living room as she left the kitchen. She was surprised at what she saw, though she should've assumed.
He was still here; on her couch.
The human part of her caused her to go towards Karadec. He must of heard her because he turned his head towards her and put his phone away. She took a seat on the couch.
"How are you feeling," he asked gently quiet.
" Better. This one is a nicer one."
"Nicer one?"
"Oh yes, there have been a few that have caused me to puke."
Seeing Adam's face turn a shade of green, she quickly explained, "Don't worry, I already know how to take care of myself when they get that bad."
A beat, "Morgan, look at me."
She does. What she sees are two earnest eyes looking back at her. Two eyes that she couldn't open up to; there was something about them she knew the walls could for.
"Morgan, this isn't a one time deal. Anytime you need anything I will have your back."
"Even if it is the most disgusting of puke?"
"Even if it is the most disgusting of puke. I will always help you. I know you would do the same for me. It is what partners do."
"Right partners."
He paused for a second but instead looked at his hands. It broke her heart to see him nervous about anything in regards to their friendship. If she was feeling a little better and more courageous, she would launch into this long speech about how he was the best part this year. How made her want to be better. How sexy he was. Instead, she gave him something that she had only given a few.
"Thank you."
"What was that?"
"Thank you."
"Right, I just never thought I hear you say the words "thank you" come out of your mouth before."
Rolling her eyes, she began to get up off the couch. He gently took hold of her arm, " Wait, I am sorry. I really appreciate you saying that and accept them."
As time began to tick away, she fought to get comfortable; laying her head a number of different ways. Nothing was working; the only option left was laying her head on Karadec's shoulder. She couldn't ask him however, she could give him puppy eyes and see if that works. She looked over to him and gave it a shot.
He sighed, "Go ahead."
"I have no idea what you are talking about."
"I know that you want to lay your head on my shoulder. I am giving you one free pass since you are still sick. If you breath one word about this to anyone, I will tell people that you drool in your sleep. Do I make myself clear?"
God, that last sentence was hot, she thought. Hoping she didn't give away what she thought internally, she did a zipper motion.
"Our little secret," she near giggled. If Karadec had a soft grin too, neither would say anything.
She laid her head on his shoulder. His body provided a beautiful comfortable heat; it was kind that made it impossible not to fall asleep to. Less than a minute after Morgan laid her head down, she was out for the count.
Adam however stayed awake; not creepily keeping on a eye on his partner. It was getting really late and he really should leave. If it had been the start of their partnership, he would do one of two things. The first being waking her up and leaving. The second would be gently moving her so she was laying on the couch with a blanket over her. Heck even a few weeks ago, he would've picked her up and placed her in her bedroom then exited out of the house.
However, right in this moment,..
He couldn't.
Why?
Shit, he had fallen for her. Not in a soft way either. A this is going to hurt and cause tears way. The way that you know in your heart that there is no possible way for either of you to be together.
A small part of him, the romantic, wanted to fight for her. Be the person who gave her all the happiness, protection, and romantic love that she deserved.
That is a dangerous combo to have in his heart and mind.
It honestly made him worried about tomorrow and the what if's that came with it. He did know one thing though.
No matter what happened between them, he would always protect her.
