Chapter 1: The Calm Before The Storm

Chapter Text

The ground was moist, the air was humid, and nature was still. Today wasn't a special day, or at least the duo thought it wasn't.

Banana sat up in his bed with a mumble, the yellow covers bunching up at his waist. Bread looked over to him, blinking softly at the large blob of yellow his eyes didn't have enough energy to focus on. Bread glanced up to what he figured was Banana's face- or at least, hoped. He would look kinda stupid if it wasn't. Banana rolled his head over to face Bread, and smiled.

"You look like shit." He spoke, his voice raspier and deeper than normal. He always sounded like this in the morning. "One, I just woke up. Two," Bread weakly lifted up his hand and draped it over his face, "I'm coming down with a cold." He sighed, letting his hand run down the side of his head and land on the pillow propping him up.

Bread further backed his claim with a loud sneeze, making Banana giggle a bit. "I sure can tell." Banana fell back down into his bed, his eyes tracing the intents in the ceiling. "Slow morning, yeah?" Banana turned over to Bread, who replied with a simple nod. "Thats alright, we can take our time." Banana closed his eyes and let his head sink into the pillow. "Are you about to fall asleep?" Bread asked with a quirked eyebrow. He was met with a sleepy groan.

Bread simpered with a huff of amusement. He accepted that they were gonna sleep in for who knows how long, and he rolled over to fall back into his slumber.

---

Banana was the first to wake up. He pushed himself up and out of the comfort of his blanket. He wanted more than anything to crawl back into the warmth of his mattress but knew he needed to actually do things today. Bread was still sleeping soundly, his light snores rhythmically lining up with the creaks of the floorboards. Banana felt like it was a breach of privacy to keep looking at the way his chest rose and fell, so he broke away. He didn't have the heart to wake him up, so Banana kept his pace down to the hallway of their base.

He paused in front of a furnace, leaning over the top and refueling the slot with coal. He groggily blinked and slumped forward with a sigh. "Your still tired, love." He heard a voice from behind. Banana whipped his head around with wide eyes, staring at the smug looking Bread infront of him. Bread narrowed his eyes and let his mouth fall open with a stiffled giggle. "Did I scare you?" He smiles. "I- Uh. Hrm. No-" Banana lied incoherently behind his hand. Bread rolled his eyes and walked over to the other set of counters.

"I'll make you coffee. I know how you like it." Bread began pulling out various ingredients from the top cabinets. Banana stared at him from across the kitchen, watching how his eyes fluttered open the more awake his body became, how carefully and controlled his every movement was, how his arms tensed and relaxed when he was holding something heavy.

This was normal, right? It was normal for friends to admire eachother. It was normal for Banana to appreciate his friend's smile. It was normal for Banana to wanna fall into his friend's arms and drift asleep. It was normal for Banana to- No. This is not normal. Hes being weird. He turns around and splashes his face with some cold water, trying to push out the odd thoughts he garnered from his drowsy state. "I'll be checking on the farms. Shout my name when your done." He spoke bluntly, ignoring the ideas he had only a minute ago. "Wouldnt be the first time I've shouted your name." Bread spoke in that low, suggestive tone he used when he was trying to piss off Banana. He wanted to tell Bread to shut up, but nothing came out.

Bread held out a matte yellow mug, one that looked like it had taken a beating. And it had. This was one of their oldest mugs, one that was only a couple months older than a plain red mug. This was one of the many things that Bread got Banana for his birthday. Among many holidays, Bread loved getting Banana things for his birthday. It was one his favorite things to do! He liked shopping for his best friend, and he liked seeing the look on Banana's face whenever he saw whatever bullshit Bread got him. No matter how much money was spent, he never felt upset at the end of the day.

This mug was special though, This was hand made. And although it's been dropped a couple of times, Banana did his all to keep it together. He once found Banana on the floor in tears cause he couldn't glue it all back together by himself. Banana had apologized at least 18 times that week and still goes out of his way to remind Bread that he's sorry. His determination to never let this block of clay rest peacefully is kind of endearing. On Bread's birthday Banana got him a matching red mug to go along with his yellow one. They've kept them around since.

Bread poured coffee into the mug, a swirl of steam rising up and fading out with a puff of warm air. Bread dropped a small sugar cube into the mug and gently stirred around with a small golden spoon. "Him and his stupid..black coffee..." He fake gagged and dropped the spoon into the coffee. Bread leaned out the doorway and yelled out for Banana, ultimately deciding it was time for him to make his own coffee.

Bread grabbed the red mug, rolling it around in his hands before setting it down on the counter. It wasn't as wrecked as the yellow mug because Bread had decided to be more careful with it. He won't ever admit it, but Bread knows how bad Banana feels for dropping his hand made creation, while Bread hasn't even dropped this thing once. This was also a hand made gift. One that Banana spent a whole month learning how to make pottery so he could repay Bread with a shoddily put together mug that looked like it was on its death bed. Bread didn't care though, he was encapsulated by each dent and ridge on the sides. Banana was ashamed, but Bread was enamored.

Bread poured in the coffee before he could dwell on the fact that he was admiring a mug that looked like it was made in 6 minutes. One that, wasn't piquing his interest due to how good it looked, but rather because it was made by the dedication of his best friend. Bread poured in vanilla and stirred it around untill the murky brown water lightened up to a bland cream. He shouldn't feel this way over a mug, right?

He drowned out his thoughts with a sip of coffee, sticking his tongue out at the taste. He added too much vanilla.

Banana walked into the doorway, sliding over to grab the yellow cup and lifting it up to his mouth. He took a long sip, closing his eyes and holding the bottom of the mug. "Tastes like shit, doesnt it?" Bread asked, leaning against the counter and taking another gulp of his too-sweet caffeine. "You just don't know ball." Banana sneered. "The ball in question being straight drain water? Your right, I'm not a sewer dweller." Bread rolled his eyes and shoved the mug across the counter. Banana set his cup next to Bread's, the bright yellow and red fitting each other perfectly. "I think Im done anyways." Banana sighed, "Same." Bread shuffled out the door.

Banana watched him leave his presence. He turned around and dumped out the mugs, deciding it wasn't the best idea to leave them there, half drank. Banana's hand lingered on the mugs for a couple seconds longer than he should've. He was reminiscing.

It wasn't for a second, it wasn't for 10, not even 30. A whole 2 minutes he sat there staring at the mugs, remembering.

Banana felt like he was in debt to Bread after he got him the mug for his birthday, so he spent a whole month learning pottery just to spit out a sad looking attempt at a cup. He was so embarrassed to give it to him, expecting a mocking laugh and an insult, but he never got one. Bread looked at the mug in his hands, then up to the nervous Banana, and pulled him in for an embrace. A hug that shouldn't have lasted as long as it did. A hug that shouldn't have been so easy to get comfortable in. Banana can still remember what Bread told him that day. A whisper at best, a secret between just the two of them. "Your effort is all that matters."

Banana hated how bad it looked compared to the creation Bread made. But what he hated the most is how careless he was with it. Little cracks sprawled along the mug like a spiderweb, and you could see where Banana put glue on it. He shoved them into the sink and walked off to go join Bread in whatever he was doing.

He found Bread pacing back and fourth on the top of their watch tower, knotting his eyebrows while looking at a map taut in his grip. Bread noticed Banana walking over to him, and relaxed his composure. "Alright, heres what I'm thinkin'." Bread let his arm fall on Banana's shoulders, pulling him close to look at the map in his hands. "Theres a Trial Chamber not very far from here, and I think it would be sick as hell to get a mace... Maybe even two." He dragged his finger from where they were- all the way to the Trial Chamber. "Thats only a thousand blocks!" Banana looked over at him with a grin, Bread smiled and nodded.

"We could also get great loot. And you love to bully me with wind charges.." Bread muttered under his breath, hoping he was quiet enough for Banana not to hear. "Hh..? Hey!? It's not bullying, it's merely teasing." Banana crossed his arms and pouted. Bread huffed out a laugh, a grin pulling at the corners of his mouth. He let his head fall onto Banana's shoulder, wedged next to his neck.

"So, thats what we're doing today?" Banana asked, still looking at the map. Bread looked up to meet his eyes, blinking slowly at Banana while resting on his collarbone. "Pretty pwease?" Bread begged, his lips pursed up and his eyes shimmering. "It was already a yes before you did the pleading thing." Banana smiled fondly at the man. Bread nuzzled closer under him and put the map away, "Sweet."

Banana pulled away from him to search through a chest, shoving his hand inside and pulling out a book. He flipped open the pages to a blank one that followed a couple with messy handwriting. He dipped a quill that tied loosely around the book into a small dish of ink, and began writing. "B & B smp...Episkeletal-" Bread interrupted him with a snort. "Couldnt think of anything else?" He asked, looking over his shoulder and staring at the scribbly letters, "Shut it. Episkeletal... 15, yeah?" Banana continued reading his notes out loud, turning over to Bread every time he had a question. Bread simply nodded his head. "Alright."

Banana kept pressing the quill into the roughed up paper, the dye fading out as the thick sheet absorbed the ink. "We just raiding the Trail Chamber today?" Banana shifted his head over to look at Bread. He replied with a shrug and a groan. "Whus thinking we could also look for a mansion." Bread adds. "For totems? Like we even need em.. We'll probably fuck around so much we waste them all and still die." Banana raises his eyebrow, and he feels Bread chuckle into the back of his neck. "Could be useful, could be fun." Bread mumbles, still close to Banana. He taps the feather of the quill on his chin and decides it doesn't hurt to write it down.

Banana's messy handwriting wrote; B & B smp, Episkeletal 15.

-Raid the nearest Trail Chamber

-Loot a Woodland Mansion.

It wasn't a lot, considering how much they normally do on the smp, but was some decently difficult missions, so it made sense. Plus, today felt like a slow day, they wanted some time to relax a bit. Maybe after the cameras shut off they can have some alone time, they really need it anyways... The two of them have some problems to sort out with each other.

Bread walks over to the other side of the watch tower, looking over the horizon at all of the progress they've made over the course of 14 episodes. It was a.... horrible sight actually. "..We completely ruined this poor plains biome." Bread said with a sheepish grin. Banana looked over to where Bread was, and...he was right. There was multiple farms, not bad looking farms...per say.. but all of them clumped together in the same 5 chunks with no theming.. It looked like a disaster.

"Hey, your not wrong.. But you know what would look even worse?" Banana stepped over to Bread and wrapped his arms around his neck, pulling him closer. Bread hummed in response, "2 giant statues of us. One dumb looking Banana...and a terribly sexy looking Bread." Banana whispered, his hands gripping Bread's shoulders. Bread looked out to the grass and thought about two statues of them, overlooking all of the builds they made, together. "We have to do that now." Bread leaned back into Banana, their torsos colliding. "Your being domestic again, Bread." Banana spoke with a snicker, letting him go, so he could lean over the railing. "Your the one who did it first." He smiles and nudges Banana's hip with his own.

Bread admires the way the wind pushes back Banana's loose hanging tie. He backs away and crawls down the watch tower before Banana realized he might've been staring at his chest. Bread shuffled down the stairs and walked into their room, grabbing his weaponry. Bread mostly specialized with melee combat, so he didn't bother with bringing too many arrows to load in his crossbow. Banana was the ranged combat genius. Although they both had a pretty even skill-rate when it came to Minecraft, they both agreed that Banana should be the main person manning the bows.

Banana soon joined him, grabbing all the gear they could possibly need. "Dont forget the map here or I will death reset you to go grab it." Banana warned, resting back on the cold deepslate tiles that made up the walls. "Dont get your panties in a twist, I have it right here." Bread patted at the satchel he had around his waist. Bread placed his hands on Banana's shoulders and shook him around a bit. "Dont sweat it. We lock in, raid the Trail Chamber, and run away scott-free." Bread squeezes his hands, pulling at the fabric of Banana's suit. He lets his head fall down with a disgruntled exhale. "Okay."
