Chapter Text
It was Valentine’s Day and normally everyone she knows would be ecstatic to give lovers or friends gifts but ever since WotFI 2021, this day always makes Melony sad. Because even though she can spend it with her friends, she never really wants to because her mind always thinks about a certain axolotl anime artist who had to leave this world too soon.
Her arms wrap around a plushie that looks like Axol. She keeps thinking about how his love confession was in manga form because of course it was. And how she had added to it, saying okay because she liked him too. But she was only able to tell Axol that moments before she had to kill him. Her friends always kept telling her about how there was no other choice to save the world and that he died a hero and she knew it was true but it always, always hurt. Especially on Valentine’s Day.
“I wish you were still here Axol,” she whispered to herself, getting up from her bed and walking over to her desk that had the current manga and other drawings she was working on. And in the corner of her desk was the picture she drew herself and had framed after the whole thing with SMG0 and Niles. It was a little chibi drawing of her and Axol holding hands and she smiled at the memory of when Axol saw the drawing.
Melony suddenly woke up in what looked to be a sort of galactic dimension. The last thing she remembered was fighting Eldritch Zero before she got… eaten? She seemed to be on a blue bridge that was at a slight angle but she still had no idea where she was but that there was what looked to be a bright blue-ish white ball, galaxy thing in front of her and behind her was a void looking place. She turned back around and was surprised to see a familiar figure now in front of her.
“Axol!?” she exclaimed, eyes widening. She then remembered her dream sort of thing which made her hesitantly ask, “Wait… is it actually you?” Her drawing then started glowing and was lifted up by some force before it floated over to Axol’s clawed hands and he gently grabbed it and looked at it.
Melony was a bit worried that he would rip it in half again like in her dream sort of thing but then she realized that she didn’t need to worry because Axol said, genuinely impressed, “Woah… Melony, did you draw this? You’ve gotten so good.”
The watermelon turned human started tearing up and she exclaimed, her voice starting to fill with bittersweet happiness, “It is you! I’ve missed you so much!” She ran over to Axol and gave him a hug as she began to cry and she could feel him reciprocate the hug. “There’s so much I’ve wanted to say since I… Wait… where are we?”
“I think… you know where this is… Oh, don’t worry though, you’re not like… me yet… You can still choose to go back if you want,” he explained, quickly adding those last two parts after he must’ve seen her scared and worried expression.
“But if I do… I’ll lose you again…” Melony replied, tears still falling down the side of her face.
“Well… yeah…” Axol responded sadly. He then looked at her before saying, “But if you do stay… you won’t be able to help our friends. Like I said… It’s your choice.” Melony started sobbing a little as she thought about this because she knew her friends were in danger but she also wanted to stay with Axol. She then noticed the drawing float out of Axol’s hand and back to her.
She held the drawing closer to her before closing her eyes with a bittersweet smile, tears still running down her face as she says, her decision having been made, “I’ll see you again sometime Axol.” The bridge then started moving them apart.
As they split apart, Axol says, “I’ll be right here waiting for you Melony.” He then starts waving while he exclaims, “And bring me another drawing next time!” As they continue to get further apart, Melony smiles a little more as she nods before she feels her body begin to wake up…
When the memory ended, she finally started to notice that she had begun crying at some point. She wiped away the tears but they just kept coming so she began to ignore them as she picked up the drawing of her and Axol holding hands after setting the plush of Axol on the desk. She hugged it to her chest as the tears began to fall harder.
“I miss you so much Axol. I hope that you’re happy wherever you are,” she whispered with a slight sob. She once again grabbed the Axol plush before walking back to her bed. The half deity girl paused though when her eyes landed on a certain manga that she had finished for Axol since he obviously never got the chance to. After looking at it for a few seconds, she grabbed it and brought it with her to her bed. When she sat down on her bed she flipped the manga open to her favorite two pages as she began reading it, tears still streaming down her cheeks.
The first panel was of Axol and Melony sitting next to each other, watching the fireworks.
“So pretty!” Melony was saying while Axol was looking at her a bit nervously.
“Uh… Uhm…” Axol had mumbled, clearly wanting to say something but seemed he couldn’t find the words.
Melony gave him a confused look as she asked, “Axol?” It made the manga artist get a little more flustered.
In response to Melony saying his name, Axol said, two of his clawed fingers pressed against each other, “S-Say Melony… I’ve uh… I’ve been meaning to say…” He then put his hands down as he hunched in on himself before saying, “...I like you. WILL YOU BE MY GIRLFRIEND?!” He had a few tears in his eyes because he was so nervous and he looked away from Melony while she looked at him in shock with a blush on her face.
“...” Silence stretched between them as Axol looked down and Melony looked at him.
“OK!!” Melony cheerfully accepted, giving Axol a hug with a big smile on both of their faces.
Melony smiled at these two pages as she read them a couple more times. It always made her happy because honestly, before this love confession, she had started liking Axol the same way as well so she was very happy to learn that they both liked each other. Her smile became a little sadder and smaller as she thought about how they never got the chance to spend time together as boyfriend and girlfriend.
Suddenly her phone chimed so she pulled it out to see that it was a text from Meggy.
SquidGirl: Hey! Since you probably don’t have anything going on today, do you want to hang out with me, Tari, and Saiko for today?
Melony’s smile became a happy one again as she read this text.
MelonGirl: Yeah! Where can I meet up with you guys?
SquidGirl: Right now we’re at the showgrounds but don’t worry, we’ll stay here until you arrive! :3
MelonGirl: Okay! I’ll see you guys in a bit! :D
SquidGirl: :D
Melony then put her phone away with a smile as she got off of her bed and set down her drawing, manga, and Axol plushie. She looked at them for a couple of seconds after wiping her tears away before turning around and heading for the door so she could go and meet up with the rest of the girls that were a part of SMG4’s friend group.
