Chapter 1: A Challenge Is Presented

Chapter Text

Jax had Pomni wrapped in his arms and a gloveless hand was absent mindedly rubbing up and down her back causing the jester to sigh contently and wiggle even closer into him. Their breathing was still coming back down to normal rate after sleeping together and while pleasure was still singing in their veins, a satisfied tiredness was also quickly setting in.

Jax’s brain hadn’t started it’s typical shut off process, however.

When Pomni looked up into his eyes, she gave a soothing, gentle scratch through the soft on his back. “I can hear the cogs turning from here, Jax. What are you thinking about?”

Jax’s pupils made eye contact, shrinking a bit, before returning to their normal width. A violet blush crept high on his cheeks, and Pomni couldn’t help but smile at the adorable expression on his face.

“I just…,” he swallowed and looked away, blush deepening before muttering, “I was just thinking of holidays from real life.”

Pomni could’ve guessed for hours, and she never would have been able to guess that. “Holidays?” She blinked.

“Yeah, like what time of year it’d be out there and if there’d be any holidays to be celebrated. Didn’t you have a favorite?”

She got the impression he was beating around the bush to give himself the confidence to ask what he was really wanting versus just asking her which holiday was her favorite. However, Pomni wouldn’t be surprised if he was just taking advantage of the line of questioning to also gather more information on her. She’d developed the ability to read Jax well since joining the circus and even more so in the last few months of their agreement.

“I did. Well, do” she frowned, “What was yours?”

Jax’s typical grin had settled back on his face, and Pomni was once again struck by how annoying it was that he could be a purple rabbit of all things and she still found him so attractive.

“I asked you first, Pompom.”

Pomni rolled her eyes, “Fine. I really liked thanksgiving. I loved all the food and just the pure laziness that came after the meal.”

Jax’s grin transitioned into a sweeter, softer curve as he envisioned her enjoying the hedonistic tendencies of the holiday. He wasn’t sure which one he had imagined she’d favor, but he hadn’t expected the turkey holiday to take the gold. The more he thought about it, he shouldn’t have been surprised. The girl did talk about foods she missed and loved taking naps.

He continued to stare into her eyes and Pomni raised an eyebrow.

“Well?”

“Well, what?” The smug smile was back.

Red and blue pinwheels rolled up with a sigh barely covering for the smile trying to appear on her face, “what’s your favorite holiday?

Jax pretended to look lost in thought and gave an exaggerated sigh to sell the bit while looking off.

“Hmmmmm, I don’t know Pommy. There’s just so many to choose from. If I had to pick, though…”

His eyes flicked back to her face before a crooked, genuine grin grew blossomed on his face.

Pomni waited for his answer. She assumed it would probably be some holiday with fireworks, given his penchant for explosives and chaos.

“Valentine’s day, probably.”

Again, the jester found herself blinking up at the rabbit, watching the blush once again start to creep up on his face.

“Valentine’s day? Really?”

What? Is that really so surprising?” Jax’s tone sounded close to taking offense at her incredulous tone.

“No, no! I just mean, I thought you’d say like fourth of July or something. With all the fireworks?” her pale hand soothingly rubbed his back again in an unspoken apology.

Six months ago, Pomni genuinely would not have believed the information she was hearing. But now…. now she had new information to extrapolate from.

Jax was a surprisingly tender and giving partner. He was always thinking of her needs in bed first and seemed to value touching and kissing to the same level as the actual sex. He was still mischievous and teasing, but that came more as they adjusted into their agreement. The violet rabbit seemed to get off on her pleasure and took it as some kind of almost challenge.  Pomni had asked him to be a bit more rough some nights after a particularly stressful adventure or two, and Jax had been so attentive to her reactions making sure he didn’t go too far.

Pomni was still pretty sure his intense eye contact was half the reason she came so hard those nights.

All in all, Jax was much more of a romantic than she, or anyone else would ever imagine. He also probably would abstract on the spot if anyone besides her found out. She only knew this information from their mutual agreement to mess around together to relieve stress. At the same time, if this was what he was like in ‘friends with benefits’ situation, she couldn’t help but swallow down some jealousy at the idea what he’d be like with a partner he loved.

Jax rolled his eyes, oblivious to the complex thoughts and feelings blasting through the woman’s head. “Yeah, valentine’s day has been my favorite. There’s just something cute about it. Plus, it’s even more fun to celebrate with someone…” The hand that had been tracing along her spine the whole conversation suddenly dipped lower, playfully squeezing the meat of her cheek.

Pomni giggled. So that’s where this was going. Jax missed the corporate excuse for romance and presumably some sort of theme.

“If only we could celebrate somehow.” She hummed, pleased his gentle kneading of her ass.

He leaned his face down to kiss under her jaw, licking the creamy white skin and sucking gently before moving back, a wet pop as his mouth disconnected. “Well, I might have a slight solution there, sweet stuff.”

“Oh yeah, and what’s that?” Pomni breathed, a hand moving up to smooth down the fur on the back on his head in a way she knew he liked.

The responding rumble in his chest made her smile.

“What if…we pretended it was valentine’s day? Made it like some sort of…challenge.” Jax’s grin was stretching wide in a way that made Pomni’s stomach flip in anticipation at what he had in mind.

“What type of challenge?”

His eyes left hers to glance down at her mouth for a second, warm but hungry, before he moved to place them next to where her ear should’ve been, knowing that even in its absence it was still sensitive especially with what he was about to say.

“A night for you to do whatever you want to me, and a night for me to do whatever I want to you.” he whispered sensually, hot breath and lips brushing her skin forcing a shiver out of the jester.

“Oh,” she breathed out, feeling her body respond to him, “oh.

“You like the idea of that, huh Pomni?” Jax whispered again. He had pulled back to look at her face but now started to resume staring at her mouth.

“I…I’m intrigued.” Pomni found herself staring at Jax’s mouth in return, trying to cover how her pulse was starting to race again the more she entertained his idea.

“Any questions about it?”

“So, like, we just get the opportunity to pick what we do?”

“Mmm, kinda. I had more in mind that if you have some sort of fantasy of something you would want to do to me, you could do that.” Jax’s eyes moved back up to hers to try to explain, “sorta like a selfish thing you want and the other one can either consent to it or choose not to.”

Oh.

Oh, she was really into the idea of that actually.

“Ok, I’m in. I imagine you already have something in mind for yours?” Pomni smirked, trying to seem casual about agreeing.

“No, actually. I have no idea what I’d want to choose yet.” the rabbit replied honestly, shoulder raising an unbothered shrug.

“I actually have a hard time imagining that you of all people can’t think of something.” the jester chuckled.

“That’s not what I said,” he grinned, moving her onto her back and laying himself on her, chin sitting between her breasts. He sighed, pleased as a white hand returned to petting the back of his head. “I said I didn’t know what I’d choose, not that I couldn’t think of something. I just want to do so many things to you that it’s hard to decide.

“Jax.” Pomni’s mouth went dry, unlike between her legs, “you can’t just say something like that.”

She could feel her face heat up and she could only assume she looked like a tomato.

“I’m just telling you the truth, Pompom.” When Pomni looked at him, his pupils were blown wide, nearly covering the yellow entirely.

He was dead serious.

She huffed, completely flustered now. She glanced away and felt him raise his head and start to move up her body until they were face to face.

“I didn’t mean to rile you back up.” He said in a way that didn’t sound apologetic at all. “When one of us lands on what we want to choose, just let the other know and we’ll pick a time.”

“Ok.” Pomni said, making eye contact again, only for her pinwheels to slide back down to his mouth.

It seemed like they were both losing an internal battle to not kiss.

Jax finally broke the tension—or maybe made it worse. Pomni couldn’t decide. He finally pressed his lips to hers and they both sighed at the connection.

They’d continue the conversation later; they had important things to do right now.
