Work Text:
Valentine's day never held much importance to Kiryu. To him it was just another day. Sure, he did receive plenty of chocolate from girls, but beyond that, the day held no significance. Well… not until he met someone he wanted to share the day with, that is.
The weight of the bento felt heavy in his hands. He had always tried to properly express his gratitude for all the chocolates he received, but he never acknowledged the courage it must’ve taken to offer them to him.
“Kiryu-san, did you make these yourself?!” Nirei beamed, leaning over to peer into the bento.
“Ah, yes! I wanted to try something.” He held up the box towards Nirei and his classmates. It wasn’t anything fancy, really, he probably didn’t even need to make it, but a piercing gaze boring into the side of his head reminded him why he did.
“Are these pancakes?” Nirei asked, a notebook in hand and curious eyes focused on his face. “They’re so tiny!”
“Mhm,” Kiryu nodded, “red velvet mini pancakes! It’s a Valentine’s Day special treat!”
He had to admit he was quite proud of how they turned out, sitting in little stacks around cute skewers, topped with berries and syrup.
The goal wasn’t to brag about his cooking skills, though it did seem that way to his classmates. Kiryu’s impossible secret mission was to get a certain someone to have a bite.
“They’re quite impressive, Kiryu-kun.” The boy in question complemented, causing soft fluttering in Kiryu’s chest.
‘Eat it then!’ is what Kiryu wanted to scream, but he settled for a ‘thank you’ instead. In some rare private moments, he had seen Suo have a bite or two of food, here and there, but never something he made himself. He wasn’t sure where their relationship stood at the moment, but he was sure there was something brewing that they were both aware of. So, can he be blamed for wishing to see Suo taste something he made for him? Not like he was straight up asking him to be his valentine…
With his heart still uncooperative, he picked up a skewer and swallowed one of the mini pancakes in the stack of three.
“Whoa, that one looks like Suo!” Tsuge exclaimed, causing Kiryu to nearly choke.
Curiously, he brought the skewer away from his lips to look at the middle pancake with a golden stain on it. It was the one he had accidentally poured a bit of edible glitter on while he was contemplating whether or not they needed extra shine.
It was laughable how, when trying so hard to not think of Suo, he ended up invading his thoughts.
“Suo-chan, looks like this one is meant for you~” he drawled, having no real hope that Suo would be remotely interested in it.
“Is that so?” Suo tilted his head teasingly, “thank you for the food~”
Nothing, absolutely nothing, could have prepared him for when Suo leaned over and swallowed the remaining two pancakes on the stack, from the same skewer Kiryu ate off, while it was still in his hand.
Kiryu couldn’t even fake nonchalance. His mouth hung open. He didn’t have to see himself to know he looked like a fool at the moment. With words still stuck in his throat and face aflame, he could only gape at Suo in shock.
Seriously?!
“Did he really just eat it?!” someone exclaimed.
A cacophony of shocked screams and excited shouts shook the classroom as everyone raced closer to the scene, desks and chairs shoved aside carelessly so they could crowd around Suo and Kiryu.
“No way!”
“Dude, for real?! Suo never eats though?!”
“Kiryu must be a pretty good cook if even Suo eats it!” Tsuge suggested cheerfully, clueless to the implications everyone else was reaching for in this situation.
“I bet he only ate it because Kiryu made it,” Kakiuchi teased with a sly little smile as he nudged the vice captain with his elbow.
“Wait, you mean they finally got together? Are you guys dating?!” Kurita addressed the pair, causing another round of excited shouts and overlapping questions about their relationship. Questions which, of course, went ignored due to Kiryu’s own inability to address the situation and Suo’s apparent lack of desire to address it.
“Are they though?” Takanashi commented, pointing toward the pink-haired boy whose face was easily rivaling the shade of his own hair. “Kiryu looks like he’s about to combust!” And sure enough, Kiryu was looking unusually scrambled.
Anzai cackled. “Dude, you broke him!” he exclaimed with a heavy smack to Suo’s back. His chaotic laughter only encouraged the others to join him, even more-so when Kiryu’s face grew even redder at the attention. “Who knew all it took was an indirect kiss!” At that mention, a strangled noise came from the crowd, and Anzai turned his attention to their class captain, whose blush seemed to be competing with Kiryu’s. Anzai broke out into another fit of laughter, even doubling over as he hooked an arm around Sakura’s shoulders, pulling him into a bit of a headlock. “Why are you even blushing, Sakura? You’re not the one that shared a skewer with him!”
“Sh-shut up!” Sakura squawked, embarrassed and annoyed. He knew something had been going on between Suo and Kiryu, but seeing it first-hand was something he hadn’t been prepared for, okay?!
Another round of laughter bounced off the walls, and teasing remarks were tossed around, especially targeting Kiryu and Suo, although the latter seemed mostly unfazed. If anything, he almost seemed to be enjoying this, if his ever-present little smile said anything. But that didn’t stop the guys from making jokes nor nudging him and wiggling their eyebrows suggestively. Kiryu also, at some point, seemed to recover from his initial shock and began whining in response to their teasing. He seemed a bit reluctant to engage, his attention constantly shifting back to Suo as if he’d had something to say, but the chaos of the classroom left little chance for them to actually speak properly. The guys were constantly bombarding them both, and the other vice captain was no better.
Nirei was quite literally vibrating with excitement as he hovered between the pair, notebook and pen in hand, eyes shifting back and forth for any sort of verbal confirmation from the two of them that they had indeed started officially dating. Nirei, being their close friend, had known about their feelings for one another, or at least had assumed that there was something there given how often their captain would complain when those two were together. But now this had happened, and he couldn’t just ignore this! Kiryu baking those cute little pancakes resembling Suo, and for Valentine’s Day?! Then Suo eating those pancakes with no hesitation, and doing it so brazenly right off of Kiryu’s skewer?! Nirei wanted to know everything.
But as rambunctious as everyone was, the details of the Kiryu-Suo relationship never seemed to be explained as the two somehow managed to keep evading the questions tossed their way.
Suo was delighted.
The outburst from his classmates was just as entertaining as expected, though the disregard for personal space after the fact was something he could have gone without.
Suo could feel eyes boring into the back of his head no matter where he went, occasionally catching a glimpse of his classmates sneaking around as if he didn’t know they were there. He hummed and rolled his eye, continuing his stroll down the near-empty hallway. It was a break period, so most everyone should be outside or in one of the common areas.
Everyone but him and his entourage, of course.
Suo truly didn’t mind. They could follow him all they wanted, not that it would get them anywhere.
The moment he spotted that familiar bubblegum pink, though, he hesitated. Not enough to give either of them away, but enough to formulate a plan of action.
Kiryu looked to be heading to the roof. No one trailing after him, funny enough. Suo must be the only one with that privilege. He continued on his path, passing the stairs to the roof and turning the corner just beyond them.
“Where did he go?!”
“Shh! He must’ve noticed we were onto him, maybe he started running! Go!”
Ah, how gullible his classmates were.
Suo breathed out a soft laugh as he stepped out from an empty classroom once the footsteps faded, backtracking towards the rooftop staircase.
The door to the rooftop creaked as he pushed it open, blinking to adjust to the bright sunlight before his gaze landed on the boy in question. Kiryu was facing him, standing tall and proud, but the anxiety in his eyes betrayed him.
“Hi.”
Suo couldn’t help his fond smile, pressing the door closed again behind him.
“Hi.”
If you were to ask Suo what he expected when he came up to the roof to meet Kiryu, he would most likely laugh and avoid the question entirely. If he did answer, though, he would say perhaps a mutual confession. A simple, sweet moment where the two of them finally acknowledged what had gone unspoken for so long.
He would not have expected to be attacked.
Suo sidestepped easily as Kiryu rushed at him, raising an eyebrow and recalibrating. He didn’t speak as the other boy made a few more attempts to land a hit, all easily parried or dodged.
“Kiryu-kun, what are you doing?” He eventually hummed, catching Kiryu’s wrist and searching his eyes.
Kiryu panted shakily as he stared back up at Suo, the expression on his face unreadable.
“You ate out of my hand.”
Suo paused.
“I did.”
“In front of the whole class. You’ve never eaten in front of them ever, and you ate out of my hand,” Kiryu continued quickly, Suo allowing him to take back his wrist when he tugged for it.
“That would be correct, yes.”
Suo himself wasn’t entirely sure why he did it. To get a reaction from his classmates? From Kiryu? He wasn’t hungry, didn’t have any reason to break his diet, yet he took the sugary, unnaturally red pancake offered to him.
Of course, the response he received was better than he could have ever hoped, but that wasn’t truly his goal. Deep down, he knew it wasn’t.
Kiryu’s arms were wrapped around his middle before he even acknowledged that the other boy had moved. Suo was quiet for a beat, letting his arms relax and loop around Kiryu in return.
“Suo-chan–”
“I like you.”
The wind whooshing around them filled in the sudden quiet after Suo spoke.
Kiryu’s cheeks tinted pink as he processed the sudden confession, barely able to open his mouth again to respond before Suo continued.
“Perhaps it’s the spirit of the holiday affecting me, Kiryu-kun. I can’t seem to stop myself from thinking about you.”
A hand was gently placed over Suo’s mouth, effectively silencing him for a moment.
“Those pancakes must have scrambled your mind,” Kiryu stammered, making Suo smile behind his hand.
“It must have missed the side that holds my feelings for you.”
“Ah- jeez, Suo-chan!”
