Finn takes a deep breath. Holds it. One, two, three...
If he focuses hard enough, the sound of the crowd — loud despite the distance between the top of the slope and the stands — disappears. Instead, he's back on the hill at home with Poe, the snow still new to both of them.
Finn is wearing Poe's snow jacket. Poe must be freezing in just his fleece, and every time Finn relives this memory he regrets not offering the jacket back.
"I'm not sure about this," Finn says, looking down the hill. The distance feels insurmountable.
Poe looks up at him from where he's just finished strapping the snowboard to Finn's feet. "I know you can do it," he says, "I got the hang of it right away."
Finn furrows his brow. Part of him wants to argue with Poe and just go home, out of the cold. A bigger part wants to impress the boy who's gone out of his way to bring Finn up this hill, loaning him his jacket and snowboard with a careless kindness Finn has never before encountered.
"Okay," Finn says, unable to keep the doubt from tinging his voice. "Just — show me again?"
In the real world, out of the memory, Finn adopts the same stance Poe showed him years ago. With one gloved hand, he fumbles with his MP3 player until he reaches the right song.
Finn breathes out, and begins his flight downhill.
