Where Our Daughter Sleeps

Summary:

Toge Inumaki is a trans man married to Yuta Okkotsu, and their life together has always been quiet, loving, and steady.

When Toge unexpectedly becomes pregnant, both of them are surprised, but Yuta never hesitates.

The story follows their journey from those first uncertain moments through pregnancy, birth, recovery, and the early months of raising their daughter Mira. Through doctor appointments, late night worries, quiet intimacy, and learning how to navigate Toge’s complicated relationship with his changing body, Yuta remains unwaveringly devoted.

And through it all, their daughter becomes the center of the quiet life they built together.

Chapter Text

Morning arrives quietly in their apartment.

Soft light pushes through the thin curtains in the bedroom, pale gold against the walls. The city outside is only beginning to wake. Somewhere down the street a delivery truck rumbles past, followed by the distant sound of a subway train. The world feels slow and sleepy.

Toge wakes before the alarm.

At first he does not understand why.

Then the nausea hits.

It rolls through his stomach in a sudden wave that makes him sit upright in bed, pressing a hand over his mouth as his head spins. He breathes slowly through his nose, waiting for the feeling to pass.

Beside him, Yuta sleeps on his stomach, one arm stretched across the mattress toward Toge’s side of the bed. His dark hair is messy, his face soft in sleep. He always sleeps deeply until the alarm goes off.

Usually.

Toge carefully slips out of bed so he does not wake him.

The floor is cool beneath his feet as he walks toward the bathroom. The nausea lingers, not strong enough to make him sick but heavy enough that it leaves him uneasy. He turns on the bathroom light and squints against the brightness.

His reflection in the mirror looks tired.

There are faint shadows beneath his eyes and his hair sticks up in several directions from sleep. He runs a hand through it absentmindedly before looking down at the counter.

The small white box is still sitting there.

The pregnancy test.

He bought it yesterday afternoon after work. At the time he told himself it was just to calm his nerves. Just to rule out the possibility that had quietly started growing in the back of his mind.

His cycle had been late.

His body felt strange.

He had tried not to think about it.

Now the box sits on the counter waiting.

Toge stares at it for a long moment.

Then he exhales slowly and opens it.

The test itself is simple. Plastic. Small. The instructions are straightforward enough that he barely needs to read them.

A few minutes later he sets it carefully on the bathroom counter.

And waits.

He tells himself not to stare at it.

He lasts about ten seconds.

His hands are shaking a little as he rests them on the edge of the counter. His stomach twists again, though this time it is hard to tell if it is nausea or nerves.

He watches the small window on the test.

One line appears.

Then another.

Two pink lines.

For a long moment his brain refuses to process it.

He blinks.

Leans closer.

Still two lines.

His breath leaves his lungs in a shaky exhale.

The room suddenly feels very quiet.

Toge slowly lowers himself down until he is sitting on the bathroom floor, his back resting against the cabinet beneath the sink. The pregnancy test is still clutched in his hand.

Pregnant.

The word echoes inside his head.

He and Yuta had talked about kids before. Late night conversations when they were curled together under blankets. Soft discussions about what their future might look like.

Someday.

That was always the word.

Someday.

Not now.

Not this morning.

His chest tightens as his thoughts spiral.

How far along would he even be?

Would he be able to handle pregnancy?

What would it feel like as his body changed?

A quiet knock on the bathroom door breaks through his thoughts.

“Toge?”

Yuta’s voice sounds groggy with sleep.

The door opens a moment later.

Yuta stands in the doorway wearing a loose t shirt and sweatpants, hair sticking up in every direction. His eyes are still half closed, but the moment he sees Toge sitting on the floor his expression sharpens.

“Toge? Hey, what’s wrong?”

He steps forward immediately.

Toge does not answer right away. Instead he lifts the test slowly so Yuta can see it.

Yuta leans closer.

His eyes move to the small window.

Two pink lines.

For a second his entire body goes still.

The silence stretches between them.

Toge raises one hand and begins signing slowly.

-I think I’m pregnant.-

Yuta blinks once.

Then he kneels down in front of him without hesitation.

The bathroom floor is cold but he does not seem to notice. His attention is entirely focused on Toge.

“Toge,” he says softly.

He reaches forward and cups Toge’s face gently in both hands, thumbs brushing lightly along his cheeks.

“Toge. Hey. Look at me.”

Toge does.

Yuta’s expression is not what he expected.

There is surprise there, yes. Shock even. But beneath it is something softer. Something warm.

Yuta takes a slow breath.

“We’ll figure it out together.”

The words are simple, but they settle into Toge’s chest like something solid and steady.

Toge watches him carefully before signing again.

-You’re not upset?-

Yuta shakes his head immediately.

“No. No, not at all.”

He huffs out a quiet breath and runs a hand through his messy hair, clearly trying to process everything.

“I mean, okay. I’m definitely surprised.”

His mouth curves into a small, nervous smile.

“But if that test is right, then that means we’re having a baby.”

He looks back at Toge.

“And I love you. So I’m already kind of on board with anything that involves you.”

Toge stares at him.

The tightness in his chest loosens slightly.

Yuta reaches forward and gently takes the pregnancy test from his hand, setting it on the counter beside them.

Then he leans in and presses a soft kiss against Toge’s lips.

The kiss is warm and reassuring.

When he pulls back he bumps their foreheads together lightly.

“Okay, love?” he asks quietly.

Toge nods slowly.

His hands lift again.

-I’m scared.-

Yuta’s expression softens even further.

“Yeah,” he says.

“Me too.”

Then he pulls Toge into a hug.

Toge melts against him immediately, arms wrapping around Yuta’s shoulders as he buries his face into the side of his neck. Yuta holds him tightly, one hand resting at the back of his head.

They stay like that for a long moment.

Eventually Yuta speaks again, his voice gentle but warm with quiet excitement.

“You know what the craziest part is?”

Toge pulls back slightly, watching him.

Yuta smiles.

“I think we might actually be good at this.”

Toge raises an eyebrow.

His fingers move.

-You think we will be good parents?-

Yuta nods firmly.

“I do.”

Then he leans forward and presses another soft kiss to Toge’s forehead.

“Especially you.”

Toge huffs a silent laugh.

Yuta stands and offers him a hand.

“Come on,” he says.

“Let’s go sit down before my brain explodes.”

Toge takes his hand and lets him pull him to his feet.

As they leave the bathroom, Yuta keeps their fingers intertwined.

Neither of them say much as they walk toward the living room.

But the quiet between them feels different now.

Heavier.

Full of possibility.

And somewhere deep inside Toge’s chest, beneath the fear and uncertainty, something warm begins to grow.
