Playing Possum

Summary:

“Niall, Bambi,” Ruben’s tone is a soft, sweet lure hooked into Nialls flesh, “If you’re asleep, I’ll fucking kill you,” but so long as he doesn’t twitch, the angler has no way to know he's on the line.

Work Text:

Niaaallllllllll,” Ruben’s voice is deep, more drawl than slur but the lisp is still there. He hears his clumsy entrance rather then sees it- he shifted onto his side facing away from the window as soon as he heard the trellis start to creak. Niall keeps his eyes closed, knowing sleep will only allude him further if the older boy catches him awake.

“Niall, Bambi,” Ruben’s tone is a soft, sweet lure hooked into Niall’s flesh, “If you’re asleep, I’ll fucking kill you,” but so long as he doesn’t twitch, the angler has no way to know he's on the line. Theres only one set of shuffling steps on their wood floor and he thanks whatever gods that Ruben hasn’t brought a girl home. The relief is short lived when he feels the tell tale dip of the mattress behind him.

Cloying heat stretches over his side, against his lower back curving up his hip and he can feel Ruben’s eyes fixed on his face. Feel his lungs expand and contract with heavy breaths above him. Feel the shifting of muscles as a hand is planted into the mattress on either side of his head, and he is acting for his life now, doing everything in his power to give nothing away to the boy braced over him. Hoping the alcohol in Ruben’s blood will smooth over any twitches he fails to suppress.

It’s quiet. Rare for a Ruben that is still awake after a night out. Niall focuses on counting his breaths and the subtle shifting above him, the moment stretching on and on in its stillness.

Then there is more movement, the warmth of Ruben’s chest against his shoulder before wet press of lips to the space just under his jaw, over his galloping pulse. Niall barely keeps himself from flinching, playing dead with the jaws of the beast at his neck, and Ruben inhales, long and hard through his nose, pressed against Niall’s skin over a slightly parted mouth.

Heat creeps down his spine and Niall prays and prays that it stops, but instead Ruben’s lips move, dragging up and back over warming skin until they press again, firmly to the sensitive skin behind his ear. The weight above him shifts and a hand presses against his chest, smoothing upwards, dragging the fabric of his shirt with it before landing below his neck, two fingers hooked in the collar of his tee. Ruben’s nose is buried in his hair, nuzzling almost, a kinder encore of their first night together. Another deep inhale, so quiet and soft he can hardly hear it over the thudding of his heart in his ears.

“Night, Bambi.” Another soft press of lips and Ruben is gone, cool night air from the open window replacing the warmth of him all at once, and Niall can practically feel the goosebumps rising on his skin as he’s left with only the burning in his own body. There is more shuffling and the familiar creak of a bed before the room is quiet again, more full as the other boy falls off into his booze induced sleep.

Niall finally pries his eyes open to the dark of the wall. Heat suffuses itself with his skin and he wishes desperately he could kick the duvet off him, but its not an option. His breath shakes and he brings a hand up to cover his mouth, the other trailing down his body to where he is hard and wanting, and does his best to muffle his shame again.

Notes:

So what do you think- Can Ruben tell Niall is awake? Is he stealing a moment of comfort from his sleeping brother or subtly laying the groundwork to sink his fangs further into him?

A very small part of a larger overall concept I've been drowning in for 2 weeks. I cannot for the life of me bring it all together, so you get my favorite part. Maybe I will post more pieces in the future.

Thank you for reading!
